Abstract:
Alongside their material dimensions, video game arcades were simultaneously metaphysical spaces where participants negotiated social and cultural convention, thus contributing to identity formation and performance within game culture. While physical arcade spaces have receded in number, the metaphysical elements of the arcades persist. We examine the historical conditions around the establishment of so-called arcade culture, taking into account the history of public entertainment spaces, such as pool halls, coin-operated entertainment technologies, video games, and the demographic and economic conditions during the arcade’s peak popularity, which are historically connected to the advent of bachelor subculture. Drawing on these complementary histories, we examine the social and historical movement of arcades and arcade culture, focusing upon the Street Fighter series and the fighting game community (FGC). Through this case study, we argue that moral panics concerning arcades, processes of cultural norm selection, technological shifts, and the demographic peculiarities of arcade culture all contributed to its current decline and discuss how they affect the contemporary FGC.

Abstract:
Arteriolar arcades provide alternate pathways for blood flow after obstruction of arteries or arterioles such as occurs in stroke and coronary and peripheral vascular disease. When obstruction is prolonged, remaining vessels adjust their diameters chronically in response to altered hemodynamic and metabolic conditions. Here, the effectiveness of arcades in maintaining perfusion both immediately following obstruction and after structural adaptation was examined. Morphometric data from a vascular casting of the pig triceps brachii muscle and published data were used to develop a computational model for the hemodynamics and structural adaptation of the arcade network between two feed artery branches, FA1 and FA2. The predicted total flow to capillaries (Q̇TA) in the region initially supplied by FA2 decreased to 26% of the normal value immediately after FA2 obstruction but was restored to 78% of the normal value after adaptation. After obstruction of 1–10 randomly selected arcade segments, Q̇TAwas on average 18% higher in the arcade network than in a corresponding two-tree network without arcades. Structural adaptation increased Q̇TAby an additional 16% in the arcade network but had almost no effect in the two-tree network. These results indicate that arcades can partially maintain blood flow after vascular blockage and that this effect is substantially enhanced by structural adaptation.

Abstract:
What features of the physical environment in video game arcades lead kids to be so engaged? How can analysis of arcade space inform language arts teachers’ decisions about designing classroom environments? This article presents an analysis of physical space in video game arcades and participants’ positions therein to suggest how language arts teachers can explore student-designed learning spaces. Qualitative analysis of the arcade space revealed three learning principles: clustering and collaborating, inverting traditional structures of power, and reconstituting access and ownership. Following a detailed assessment of the existing literacy environment in one 5th-6th grade classroom, the researchers and the classroom teacher applied these principles through physical arrangement changes in the classroom. This study shows that arcades are not only places of fun and games for children, nor are they disruptive of learning. Rather, understanding the physical space in video arcades offers principles of design to advance opportunities for students’ and teachers’ literacy learning and identities.

AbstractWe use a 2.5-dimensional, fully thermodynamically and magnetohydrodynamically compatible model to imitate the formation process of normal polarity prominences on top of initially linear force-free arcades above photospheric neutral lines. In magnetic arcades hosting chromospheric, transition region, and coronal plasma, we perform a series of numerical simulations to do a parameter survey for multi-dimensional evaporation-condensation prominence models. The investigated parameters include the fixed angle of the magnetic arcade, the strength and spatial range of the localized chromospheric heating.

AbstractThe flare images show a compact, nearly cylindrical arcade centered along the filament channel and composed of 4 prominent loops. The loop systems of Fe XII (Te = 1.7 106K) and Fe XIV (Te = 2.3 106K) are smaller than, and lie nested within, the arcades of Fe XVI (Te = 3 106K) and Ca XVII (Te = 5 106K). The loop arcades at different temperatures, as well as different loops within a given arcade, show different expansion rates. These vary from 6 – 8 km s–1 for Fe XIV shortly after flare maximum to 0.5 – 1 km s–1 late in the decay phase. For hotter ions, such as Ca XVII, the velocities are approximately constant at 2 – 3 km s–1 daring the whole of the observations.

This paper is an account of a study of existing arcade environments in London and Cardiff. Seasonal surveys were undertaken in order to understand both the arcades' thermal performance and their contribution to the environmental diversity of the city. Arcades, which are genuine bioclimatic buildings and urban spaces, appear to generate progressive environmental transients that draw on the ability of users to adapt and thus improve their comfort. The surveys were conducted using a portable sensor array. The results are analysed in terms of environmental transients and seasonal performance.

Two ribbon flares on the sun are sometimes preceded by luminous arcade like structures in the corona with fillament activity. The arcades which are associated with the coronal magnetic field are sometimes without these fillaments when they are found to be relatively long lived. The reasons underlying the stability and instability of these structures may be relevant in understanding the basic mechanism of two ribbon flares. Here we present results on the equilibrium structure of coronal arcades and their hydromagnetic stability taking into account the effects of magnetic field line-tying on the photosphere.

Abstract:
Arcade, a regional architecture style in Taiwan, is gradually replaced by sidewalk with the prevailing global trends of architecture design, thereby bringing greater challenges to pedestrians comfort. Past researches suggest optimal urban wind regime can mitigate heat island effect and enhance pedestrians comfort level. Therefore, the relationship between arcade and pedestrian wind comfort as well as the influence of arcade’s height-to-width ratios (H/W) on urban wind environment are worth a thorough research. This study takes Farglory Kyoto Community as the example. Arcades in three varied sizes are compared: In Case 1, height-to-width ratio (H/W) =1.25; Case 2(H/W=1.54); Case 3(H/W=0.75). In Aug 2016, field measurement was conducted comparable anal++ysis on outdoor environmental comfort. The field measurement result indicates that, wind environment is more stable for arcade than sidewalk, and that air temperature of arcade is 3.9 °C lower than sidewalk, thereby concluding arcade tends to generate more pedestrian wind comfort in summer. The measurement result of Thermo GEAR G100EXD suggests, during the hottest time at noon, the difference between air temperature on sidewalk and on arcade reaches 8 °C. This study also proves that in subtropical climates, arcade is more likely to provide pedestrians with higher comfort level, and that air temperature on arcade is 3.9°C lower than outdoors. The lower the height-to-width ratio is, the more comfortable the environment appears to be.

Abstract:
Travelling across present-day Poland, it is only exceptionally possible to come across a specific type of historic urban and rural houses with a ground-level section open on three sides and supported on columns or posts. Yet still in the first half of the 20th century, in some areas of Europe this type of a house was commonly found, and already a century earlier it had intrigued researchers investigating among other things, its origins of development. Within the current borders of Poland, arcaded houses are found in greater concentration in territories that in the past belonged to different political organisms and thus their research was conducted with the adoption of different optics. It is noteworthy that arcades were easily subjected to various more or less conscious manipulations in order to justify their native character, sometimes understood as belonging to particular peoples, regions, nations or even races. The paper provides hypothesis that arcades are a construction element extremely liable to ideologisation. In order to illustrate this problem, the paper presents methods of interpreting the origin of arcades in former East and West Prussia, Silesia, Lesser Poland and Lublin Province in the period from almost the beginning of the 19th century, when researchers started to be interested in this element, until 1939 when Erich Kulke’s book was published, which was the clearest result of arcades’ ideologisation. These interpretations were divided into a few main groups, which made it possible to compare the narratives and to show how the same arguments could lead to different conclusions. Unique issues, characteristic only of particular regions, were also identified. Ultimately, an attempt was made to answer the question of what influenced the liablity of arcades to ideologisation. Since the authors of the research, often architects, promoted the preservation and use of arcades referring to old patterns in new developments, the question was also asked whether such developments actually occurred.

Abstract:
Spaces are conditioned by social conditions; on the other hand, social structure is affected by spaces. Arcades, the subject of this article, first appeared in Europe in the 18th century as a result of an increase in trading activities. The arcades in Ankara, which were started to be built in the 1950s together with increasing trading activities, contributed to the urban economy with intense activities of shopping, re-determined social and urban relations as essential places of everyday life and became distinctive urban buildings with their original building typologies and the function of maintaining public continuity in the area of private ownership. Aim: This study aims to study the process in which passages emerged and to analyze their spatial features and, in particular, to examine the spatial formation of the distinctive passages in Ankara on the basis of their causation. Method: In the article, spatial features of the passages in the West were mentioned, and the conditions of the period in which the passages in Ankara were built were briefly explained. Spatial analysis of the passages found in the research area were conducted, and the formation of these passages were analyzed together with their reasons. Results: Of the 31 arcades in Ankara, 27 were built between 1950 and 1980 on and around the Atatürk Boulevard in Yenişehir/Kizilay. As of the mid-1950s, new planning decisions which were made one after the other in the built-up area re-shaped the Boulevard and its surrounding as the existing buildings were demolished, allowing to construct new buildings with arcades or stores in their entrances. Their interior designs and connections to the streets are different from the arcades in the West. Conclusion: The present subdivision system and new planning decisions applied in property order shaped the passages which were peculiar to Ankara.

Abstract:
This research study examines the nature of employee misbehaviour and organisational subcultures within the amusement arcade sector. There is a long academic history of researching misbehaviour at work and this study synthesises perspectives from organisational behaviour, industrial sociology and organisational misbehaviour. Each has strengths and weaknesses in understanding misbehaviour: organisational behaviour is strong on the importance of organisational change but is mostly focused on managing out misbehaviour and fails to engage in detail with the reasons for it. Industrial sociology has provided detailed ethnographic studies of misbehaviour and organisational subcultures but has failed to develop broader theory to understand and explain misbehaviour.r-A" more recent approach, organisational misbehaviour, seeks to provide .. a unified definition of, and approach to, misbehaviour and considers reasons Jor- such behaviour but there are few empirical studies within this perspective. This study, therefore, incorporates aspects of each approach in order to understand the full range of activities that constitute misbehaviour and the formation of workplace subcultures. This study focuses on amusement arcades, a distinctive but previously neglected sector of the tourism/leisure industry. It makes particular reference to the importance of organisational culture and organisational change in understanding misbehaviour and the formation of organisational subcultures. It does this through an ethnographic study of employees at two arcades: one ('Seacade') was a traditional family-run seaside arcade that was undergoing a major organisational change. The second (,Multitain') was a modern Family Entertainment Centre, a relatively young organisation with a stable organisational culture. The analysis starts by developing a profile of employees, noting an internal labour market with clear differentiation between core and peripheral employees. There were differences between the two arcades in terms of employee satisfaction and loyalty to the organisation which was attributed to different organisational cultures. The thesis then goes on to look at the full range of activities that constitute misbehaviour. At Seacade there was widespread misbehaviour and the discussion focussed on the full range of activities involved. This misbehaviour was sufficiently organised to be defined as an organisational subculture. At Multitain there was far less misbehaviour due to a radically' different organisational culture and almost no evidence of group misbehaviour. The analysis seeks to identify the full range of factors that produce misbehaviour and argues that there is strong evidence for misbehaviour being organisationally produced. Particular attention was paid to the organisational subculture at Seacade which demonstrated norms and values that were substantially at odds with the organisation's 'official' culture. At both sites there were also individual factors, external to the organisation that influenced misbehaviour.

Abstract:
This thesis is the study of the 19th century arcades in Beyoglu. The aim is to explore the interrelation between the arcades of Beyoglu and their surrounding urban structure in both of their formation and transformation processes, and to find out the possible contributions of arcades to the transformation and recentralization process of &

stanbul. The individual stories of the arcades as well as the socio-economic and political conditions are studied to find out the formation and transformation processes. Therefore the study is constructed by historical and spatial analysis. The history of arcades gives important clues about the development and transformation processes of the cities. Apart from the changes in surrounding urban structure and functioning, individual attempts in existing socio-economic environment determines the transformation. Therefore, changes in ownership along with changes in building have been taken as the basis for the study. At the end of the study, possible contributions of arcades to the urban space, derived from the tendencies and spatial opportunities were discussed and the role of arcade in redeveloping the central areas was pointed out. And this thesis showed that arcades may be the alternative to the peripheral shopping centers with their spatial possibilities and social facilities.

[eng] In this thesis we will study vertical oscillations in a potential arcade under the approximation of a zero- plasma, when di erent density pro les are considered. On one hand we will focus on the time-dependent problem to analyze the other side of the magnetohydrodynamic oscillations coin which traditionally is given by the normal mode analysis. We are going to study the propagation, energy transformation and damping of the impulsively generated waves as well as its relevant spatial and temporal scales in order to complete the picture. In order to study the wave damping, we examine two physical mechanisms that may be involved in the fast attenuation of the observed vertical coronal loop oscillations, namely wave leakage through wave tunneling and resonant absorption. In this wok whenever is possible, the time-dependent results are going to be compared with known normal mode properties to gain knowledge of how both sides are related as well as to test them. On the other hand, we also will investigate the use of a new technique of obtaining the system normal modes when the standard normal mode analysis is di cult to be carried out. We will apply it to a straight coronal loop model and we will obtain them with the desired degree of accuracy thanks to several criteria based on the convergence of the method.

DeLeon, Christopher L. "Arcade-style game design: postwar pinball and the golden age of coin-op videogames." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/44699.

Abstract:
Several major design elements that we often take for granted in early coin-op videogames-including rule automation, real-time button play, and fiction as static theme-originated decades prior as innovations within the pinball industry. These similarities occurred on account of a number of key personnel doing leading work in both industries, convergent evolution around the business model shared by both game forms, and an irreversible trend of coin-op games becoming more differentiated and having better contextualized objectives. Although echoes of these qualities exist in more modern videogames, the relatively pure combination of these traits in early coin-op games resulted in a type of game style unfamiliar, or even off-putting, to players whose gameplay experiences are limited primarily to newer games from the past two decades. Because the coin-op gameplay formula achieved high replay value with little content, and required only minimal instruction, aspects of it have been rediscovered within the modern casual games movement and indie mobile games. Patterns from the historical relationship between pinball and coin-op videogames can serve as a lens for gaining another perspective on more recent issues and trends in the game industry, from the inherent issues with motion control to the rapid industry-changing shift toward social games.

Abstract:
The arcadian theme is prevalent in a large number of eighteenth-century gardens. Poussin’s painting TheArcadian Shepherds and the enigmatic ‘Et in Arcadia Ego’ are now indissociable from our vision of thelocus Arcadia. Nevertheless, there is no proof that our actual reception of the image corresponds to Poussin’s intentions, or to the vision of this locus in the eighteenth-century. An appreciation of thereception of the theme of Et in Arcadia Ego and it’s eighteenth-century variants is useful, in order tounderstand the adoption of the theme by the gardeners of the period. We propose to examine in detail it’sevolution over time, in painting, poetry and landscape. We will conduct an identification and census of theforeign (non-Italian) members of the Accademia degli Arcadia of Rome and their gardens. This academy, atit’s origin, was an association of poets who met in gardens and in the surrounding countryside in order tocompose and recite their work, which dealt frequently with themes from nature. We are working under thehypothesis that this academy was a possible vector for the propagation of the arcadian theme in theeighteenth century garden. The gardens which we examine in detail each deal specifically with the theme ofEt in Arcadia Ego and apart from two exceptions are either created by, or in collaboration with, a foreignArcadian Pastor or Pastorella.(designation of a member of the Accademia degli Arcadi)

Abstract:
Nowadays, atrium building is very popular because it can provide extensity and attraction to the users even if they are inside the enclosed environment. Similar to other buildings, fire safety is one of the major concerns especially the atrium are linked to shopping arcades. The major challenge is to control the smoke movement in the case of fire and maintain a stable smoke layer clear height to allow sufficient time for the occupants to evacuate from the building. Therefore, an efficient smoke management system (SMS) is necessary. For the SMS to function properly, the smoke behaviour inside the atrium must be studied. One of the phenomena affecting the operation of the SMS is smoke stratification. That is, due to the vertical temperature gradient inside the atrium, a thermally stratified environment is formed and smoke will not be able to reach the smoke detectors/smoke outlets in the ceiling. In the past decade, various studies were conducted to study the smoke filling process in the atrium. Only a few studies were carried out to study smoke stratification in atrium. This paper attempted to study the factors leading to the development of thermally stratified environment in an atrium and the formation of smoke stratification under the ceiling space of an atrium building using scale model. These factors included the temperature of the smoke plume, the air temperature under the ceiling, the configuration of roof ceiling and the ambient air temperature. Two types of ceiling configurations such as a cuboid and a triangular prism are used. Data concerning the ceiling air temperature, smoke plume temperature, effect of different ceiling configuration and maximum smoke layer height in a thermally stratified environment are collected. Comparisons are conducted with the calculated results from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 92B equations. With all these information, better design criteria of smoke detection system, SMS in an atrium building can be developed. Finally, the experimental results can be used to investigate the discrepancies between the experimental measurement and the calculated results from NFPA 92B equations. Put abstract text here.

Abstract:
Geelong and the Surf Coast are treated here as one entity although there are marked differences between the two communities. Sitting on the home of the Wathaurong Aboriginal group, this G21 region is geographically diverse. Geelong serviced a wool industry on its western plains, while manufacturing and its seaport past has left it as a post-industrial city. The Surf Coast has benefitted from the sea change phenomenon. Both communities have fast growing populations and have benefitted from their proximity to Melbourne. They are deeply integrated with this major urban centre. The early establishment of digital infrastructure proved an advantage to certain sectors. All creative industries are represented well in Geelong while many creatives in Torquay are embedded in the high profile and economically dominant surfing industry. The Geelong community is serviced well by its own creative industries with well-established advertising firms, architects, bookshops, gaming arcades, movie houses, music venues, newspaper headquarters, brand new and iconic performing and visual arts centres, libraries and museums, television and radio all accessible in its refurbished downtown area. Co-working spaces, collective practices and entrepreneurial activity are evident throughout the region.
