Abstract:
This research study examines the nature of employee misbehaviour and organisational subcultures within the amusement arcade sector. There is a long academic history of researching misbehaviour at work and this study synthesises perspectives from organisational behaviour, industrial sociology and organisational misbehaviour. Each has strengths and weaknesses in understanding misbehaviour: organisational behaviour is strong on the importance of organisational change but is mostly focused on managing out misbehaviour and fails to engage in detail with the reasons for it. Industrial sociology has provided detailed ethnographic studies of misbehaviour and organisational subcultures but has failed to develop broader theory to understand and explain misbehaviour.r-A" more recent approach, organisational misbehaviour, seeks to provide .. a unified definition of, and approach to, misbehaviour and considers reasons Jor- such behaviour but there are few empirical studies within this perspective. This study, therefore, incorporates aspects of each approach in order to understand the full range of activities that constitute misbehaviour and the formation of workplace subcultures. This study focuses on amusement arcades, a distinctive but previously neglected sector of the tourism/leisure industry. It makes particular reference to the importance of organisational culture and organisational change in understanding misbehaviour and the formation of organisational subcultures. It does this through an ethnographic study of employees at two arcades: one ('Seacade') was a traditional family-run seaside arcade that was undergoing a major organisational change. The second (,Multitain') was a modern Family Entertainment Centre, a relatively young organisation with a stable organisational culture. The analysis starts by developing a profile of employees, noting an internal labour market with clear differentiation between core and peripheral employees. There were differences between the two arcades in terms of employee satisfaction and loyalty to the organisation which was attributed to different organisational cultures. The thesis then goes on to look at the full range of activities that constitute misbehaviour. At Seacade there was widespread misbehaviour and the discussion focussed on the full range of activities involved. This misbehaviour was sufficiently organised to be defined as an organisational subculture. At Multitain there was far less misbehaviour due to a radically' different organisational culture and almost no evidence of group misbehaviour. The analysis seeks to identify the full range of factors that produce misbehaviour and argues that there is strong evidence for misbehaviour being organisationally produced. Particular attention was paid to the organisational subculture at Seacade which demonstrated norms and values that were substantially at odds with the organisation's 'official' culture. At both sites there were also individual factors, external to the organisation that influenced misbehaviour.

The aim is to explore the interrelation between the arcades of Beyoglu and their surrounding urban structure in both of their formation and transformation processes, and to find out the possible contributions of arcades to the transformation and recentralization process of &

stanbul. The individual stories of the arcades as well as the socio-economic and political conditions are studied to find out the formation and transformation processes. Therefore the study is constructed by historical and spatial analysis. The history of arcades gives important clues about the development and transformation processes of the cities. Apart from the changes in surrounding urban structure and functioning, individual attempts in existing socio-economic environment determines the transformation. Therefore, changes in ownership along with changes in building have been taken as the basis for the study. At the end of the study, possible contributions of arcades to the urban space, derived from the tendencies and spatial opportunities were discussed and the role of arcade in redeveloping the central areas was pointed out. And this thesis showed that arcades may be the alternative to the peripheral shopping centers with their spatial possibilities and social facilities.

Abstract:
[eng] In this thesis we will study vertical oscillations in a potential arcade under the approximation of a zero- plasma, when di erent density pro les are considered. On one hand we will focus on the time-dependent problem to analyze the other side of the magnetohydrodynamic oscillations coin which traditionally is given by the normal mode analysis. We are going to study the propagation, energy transformation and damping of the impulsively generated waves as well as its relevant spatial and temporal scales in order to complete the picture. In order to study the wave damping, we examine two physical mechanisms that may be involved in the fast attenuation of the observed vertical coronal loop oscillations, namely wave leakage through wave tunneling and resonant absorption. In this wok whenever is possible, the time-dependent results are going to be compared with known normal mode properties to gain knowledge of how both sides are related as well as to test them. On the other hand, we also will investigate the use of a new technique of obtaining the system normal modes when the standard normal mode analysis is di cult to be carried out. We will apply it to a straight coronal loop model and we will obtain them with the desired degree of accuracy thanks to several criteria based on the convergence of the method.

Por un lado nos vamos a centrar en la evoluci on temporal de este problema para as analizar la otra cara de la moneda de las oscilaciones magnetohidrodin amicas, la cual tradicionalmente se ha estudiado mediante el an alisis de modos normales. Vamos a estudiar la propagaci on, la conversi on energ etica y la atenuaci on de ondas generadas mediante un impulso inicial, as como las escalas espaciales y temporales generadas, para de esta manera obtener una imagen lo m as completa posible. Para el estudio de la atenuaci on, vamos a examinar dos mecanismos f sicos que podr an estar involucrados en la r apida atenuaci on de la oscilaciones verticales observadas en bucles coronales, que son la emisi on de energ a mediante \wave tunneling" y absorci on resonante. En este trabajo, siempre que sea posible, se van a comparar los resultados de las simulaciones temporales con las propiedades conocidas que han de poseer los modos normales. Abstract:
Several major design elements that we often take for granted in early coin-op videogames-including rule automation, real-time button play, and fiction as static theme-originated decades prior as innovations within the pinball industry. These similarities occurred on account of a number of key personnel doing leading work in both industries, convergent evolution around the business model shared by both game forms, and an irreversible trend of coin-op games becoming more differentiated and having better contextualized objectives. Although echoes of these qualities exist in more modern videogames, the relatively pure combination of these traits in early coin-op games resulted in a type of game style unfamiliar, or even off-putting, to players whose gameplay experiences are limited primarily to newer games from the past two decades. Because the coin-op gameplay formula achieved high replay value with little content, and required only minimal instruction, aspects of it have been rediscovered within the modern casual games movement and indie mobile games. Patterns from the historical relationship between pinball and coin-op videogames can serve as a lens for gaining another perspective on more recent issues and trends in the game industry, from the inherent issues with motion control to the rapid industry-changing shift toward social games.

Ce travail porte sur l'etude de l'arcade dentaire chez de jeunes adultes. Il comporte deux parties: la premiere, conventionnelle, situe l'arcade dentaire dans son environnement anatomo-physiologique en rappelant son origine phylogenique, embryologique et les facteurs influencant son developpement. La seconde decrit le protocole experimental et les resultats obtenus. Menee sur 90 etudiants inscrits en deuxieme annee de chirurgie dentaire, elle a porte d'une part, sur la modelisation individualisee de la forme d'arcade, et d'autre part, sur la recherche de correlations de ces formes avec des parametres dento-maxillo-faciaux classiques. A partir d'une empreinte aux alginates de l'arcade inferieure, certains points ont ete choisis afin de reproduire la courbe sur laquelle se positionnent les dents: le bord libre des incisives, la pointe canine, et les cuspides vestibulaires des premolaires et molaires, dents de sagesse exclues. L'enregistrement des coordonnees est realise par ordinateur a partir d'une camera ccd (charge coupled device) et les donnees ainsi recueillies sont ensuite traitees par le logiciel s-plus. Ces donnees permettent de modeliser de facon individualisee l'arcade enregistree. Nous presentons les principales methodes decrites dans la litterature. Il apparait que celles-ci sont sensibles a l'influence des dents en malposition. Nous proposons ensuite des methodes qui semblent etre plus appropriees aux problemes particuliers des orthodontistes: les ajustements robustes. L'analyse statistique de chaque arcade permet de calculer un coefficient caracteristique de forme. Cet indice est compare aux indices classiquement utilises en morphologie dento-faciale

Le thème de l’Arcadie figure dans un grand nombre du jardins au XVIIIe siècle. Le tableau de Poussin Les Bergers d’Arcadie et la formule Et in Arcadia Ego sont indissociables, de nos jours, à la vision du locus Arcadie. Cependant, il n’y a aucune preuve que notre réception actuelle du tableau corresponde aux intentions de Poussin, ni à la vision du locus au XVIIIe siècle. Une appréciation de la réception du thème de l’Et in Arcadia Ego et de ses variantes au XVIIIe siècle s’avère utile, afin de comprendre la reprise de ce thème par les jardiniers de l’époque. Nous proposons d’examiner en détail l’évolution dans le temps de ce thème, dans la peinture, dans la poésie et dans les jardins. Nous mènerons un recensement des membres étrangers de l’Accademia degli Arcadi de Rome et de leurs jardins. Cette académie, à ses origines, était une association de poètes qui se réunissaient dans les jardins ou en plein air à la campagne afin décomposer et de réciter leurs œuvres, souvent liées aux thèmes de la nature. Nous sommes partis de l’hypothèse que cette académie serait l’un des vecteurs possibles de la diffusion du thème arcadien en Europe aux XVIIIe siècle. Les jardins que nous examinerons, tous au thème de l’Et in Arcadia Ego,appartiennent ou furent conçus, en dehors de l’Italie, par un Pastor ou Pastorella d’Arcadia (un membre de l’Accademia degli Arcadi)
The arcadian theme is prevalent in a large number of eighteenth-century gardens. Poussin’s painting TheArcadian Shepherds and the enigmatic ‘Et in Arcadia Ego’ are now indissociable from our vision of thelocus Arcadia. Nevertheless, there is no proof that our actual reception of the image corresponds to Poussin’s intentions, or to the vision of this locus in the eighteenth-century. An appreciation of thereception of the theme of Et in Arcadia Ego and it’s eighteenth-century variants is useful, in order tounderstand the adoption of the theme by the gardeners of the period. We propose to examine in detail it’sevolution over time, in painting, poetry and landscape. We will conduct an identification and census of theforeign (non-Italian) members of the Accademia degli Arcadia of Rome and their gardens. This academy, atit’s origin, was an association of poets who met in gardens and in the surrounding countryside in order tocompose and recite their work, which dealt frequently with themes from nature. We are working under thehypothesis that this academy was a possible vector for the propagation of the arcadian theme in theeighteenth century garden. The gardens which we examine in detail each deal specifically with the theme ofEt in Arcadia Ego and apart from two exceptions are either created by, or in collaboration with, a foreignArcadian Pastor or Pastorella.(designation of a member of the Accademia degli Arcadi)

Walking through the São Paulo galleries is always contemplative and instigating, and the awakened sense to think about the distant past, which traces its origins, was the inspirational tone of the development of this investigative work, comparing that aims to identify such sites in the presence of some featured character reported by Walter Benjamin in work "Das Passagen- Werk". The writings of the german philosopher, which describe actors and scenarios for the end of the nineteenth century, we still provide elements for the historical background that frames the arcades and their proliferation in the western world, the grands magasins, the french influence, the formation of trade and the modernity in the São Paulo city, and the birth of department stores and shopping centers considering the cultural aspects and consumption observed in these typical commercial buildings present in the centre of the state capital, remembering the decades passed until we get the twenty-first century. The theoretical framework seeks support in the texts of various authors, notorious researchers in the proposed duo: culture and consumption, without abdicate the learning of basic fundamental social sciences. In empirical basis for the necessary research, the galleries were chosen from a generalist approach, including its location and the products and services offered to the people, groups and usual tribes. From the analysis of the interviews carried out with the goers and current owners, in addition the answers linked to now, has allowed fetched interconnection with the ancient, aiming to build a tenuous bridge time, material and personal, which almost abstract way, take us to the desired result, lighted by the similarity of both cities
Caminhar pelas galerias paulistanas é sempre contemplativo e instigante, e o sentido desperto de refletir sobre o passado longínquo, remetendo às suas origens, foi o tônus inspirador da consecução deste trabalho investigativo e de comparação que pretende identificar em tais locais a presença de alguns personagens caracterizados nas passagens parisienses por Walter Benjamin na obra Das Passagen-Werk . Tais escritos do filósofo alemão, descritivos de atores e cenários relativos ao final do século XIX, nos fornecem elementos para a trajetória histórica emoldurada nas arcadas e sua proliferação no mundo ocidental, os grands magasins, a influência francesa, a formação do comércio e a modernidade na cidade de São Paulo, além do surgimento das lojas de departamento e shopping centers, considerando-se os aspectos culturais e de consumo observados nestas típicas edificações comerciais presentes no centro da capital paulista, rememorando as décadas passadas até chegarmos ao século XXI. A estruturação teórica busca apoio nos textos de vários autores, notórios pesquisadores do duo proposto: cultura e consumo, sem abdicar da erudição dos teóricos fundamentais das ciências sociais. Em base empírica, para a pesquisa necessária, as galerias foram escolhidas a partir de uma abordagem generalista, englobando sua localização e os produtos e serviços oferecidos às pessoas, grupos e tribos habituais. A análise das entrevistas efetuadas com os frequentadores e proprietários atuais, além das respostas vinculadas ao momento, possibilitou a buscada interligação com o antigo, visando construir uma tênue ponte temporal, material e pessoal, que de forma quase abstrata, nos leve ao resultado pretendido, iluminado pela similaridade das duas metrópoles

La modélisation par la méthode des centres mobiles de DIDAY, aboutit à la représentation graphique d’une charte de cinq formes distinctes. Une définition mathématique de la courbe individuelle est énoncée à l’aide d’une programmation informatique. 3, Les relations des déterminants squelettiques dentaires sur la classification des formes d’arcades par examen de leurs corrélations. Les conclusions soulignent l’intérêt clinique d’une définition mathématique, personnalisée en fonction du schéma squelettique, qui est employée dans la construction d’arcs préformés de haute résilience, serait le garant de la stabilité des résultats de traitement. Le complexe pompéien du Champ de Mars (3,5 ha) comprend le premier théâtre en pierre construit à Rome en 55 a. C. , mais aussi un temple, une curie et le premier jardin public de la Ville. Cette thèse synthétise l’ensemble des sources disponibles sur le sujet, qu’elles soient textuelles, iconographiques ou archéologiques. Ensuite, nous avons insisté sur le contexte de la construction, contexte politique en faisant un bilan sur les problèmes liés à la construction d’un théâtre en dur, contexte urbanistique (choix du secteur et de l’orientation) et contexte architectural. Il s’agit du premier théâtre à arcades et à portique de Rome et nous avons dégagé ses modèles avant d’aborder la question de sa succession. Nous avons ensuite travaillé sur les quatre entités du complexe : le temple et les autres aedes, le théâtre, le portique et enfin la curie. Une sous partie s’est attachée aux techniques mises en œuvre dans le théâtre. Chaque étape est ponctuée par des reconstitutions virtuelles, étayées par nos conclusions, et une visite interactive du complexe au IVe siècle p. C. Est proposée sur un DVD. Le recueil exhaustif de la documentation a permis d’élaborer la première étude complète de cet ensemble. Plusieurs avancées ont été faites : la compréhension et la mise en situation de deux systèmes de velums dont nous avons pu tester l’efficacité, mais également la perception du rideau de scène et des sparsiones. C’est la première reconstitution virtuelle de l’ensemble du complexe fondée sur une étude scientifique avec mise en situation des techniques, afin d’allier la perception du gigantisme architectural à la compréhension de systèmes mécaniques

Dissertação apresentada na Universidade de Lisboa - Faculdade de Arquitetura, para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Arquitetura.
O presente trabalho pretende investigar a situação do Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, último grande documento construído do período monárquico português. Aldo Rossi em A Arquitectura da Cidade refere que a cidade evolui a partir de catalisadores. Os elementos primários como o autor os designa incorporam todos os elementos que se destacam da malha urbana e que pela sua carga simbólica e cariz maioritariamente público funcionam como dinamizadores da vida quotidiana. Pela sua Arquitectura, carga simbólica e importância nacional, o Palácio Nacional da Ajuda é certamente um catalisador para a freguesia, no entanto devido às sucessivas interrupções da sua construção e posterior ausência de um plano que lidasse convenientemente com a sua escala e dimensão simbólica, este funciona como uma forma de patologia, amarrando o bairro a uma situação de indefinição. Pensar o Palácio e a sua envolvente é uma oportunidade de reflectir sobre a importância da presença do Passado no tecido da cidade de Lisboa e perceber que os efeitos do Terramoto de 1755 ainda hoje são sentidos na cidade. Sendo um objectivo complexo e de difícil resolução devido à vasta escala do espaço, o simbolismo do Monumento e à delicadeza das permanências históricas que existem em seu redor, sobreviventes do incêndio da real Barraca, este tema torna-se essencial para dar coerência ao lugar resolvendo os espaços devolutos e sem utilidade em seu redor, pretendendo-se criar as bases para a consolidação do tecido urbano da freguesia e dando a possibilidade para a cidade se expandir para um dos seus lugares mais atractivos (quer pela sua exposição solar, vista sobre o Tejo e seguras fundações).
ABSTRACT: The present work aims to investigate Ajuda’s National Palace, last great built document of the late Portuguese monarchy. Aldo Rossi refer’s in his book Architecture of the City (A Arquitectura da Cidade in the Portuguese version) that cities’ evolve from catalyst elements. These primary elements, has the author call’s them, incorporate all the element’s which stick out from the urban tissue and by their symbolism and mostly public character, function has enhancer’s of society life. Because of its Architecture, symbolism and national importance, the Ajuda’s National Palace is certainly a catalyst for the area, but due to successive interruptions to its construction and later absence of a convenient plan to deal with its scale and dimension, it functions more as a pathology, tying the neighborhood to a situation of indefinition. To think the Palace and its outskirts is an opportunity to question and investigate the presence of the Past in the urban tissue of Lisbon and to understand the effects of the 1755 Earthquake that are now-a-days still felt in the city. Although a complex objective with a difficult resolution due to its physical and symbolic scale and due to the delicacy of the historical remains all around it, survivors of the fire in the Royal Shack (Real Barraca in Portuguese), this theme becomes essential to give coherence to the place, creating the bases for its consolidation and allowing the city to expand to one of its most attractive spaces either by solar orientation, view of the river Tagus, solid rock foundations, and proximity to Monsanto wood.

Deux aspects de physiologie orofaciale ont été examinés: A- La perception de la dureté a été étudiée par des méthodes psychophysiques, à partiri de cinq séries d'échantillons aux duretés variées, ont été contrôlées. Les seuils différentiels et l'estimation de la grandeur ont été établis pour dix sujets il n'est pas apparu de différence significative entre la sensibilité au niveau des incisives et des molaires. Le seuil différentiel varie entre 4 et 11% selon la gamme de dureté, et il existe une nette supériorité de l'appareil manducateur par rapport à l'extrémité digitale lors des épreuves de discrimination de la contrainte. B- Une étude de l'égression de la 1ère molaire supérieure privée d'antagoniste a été menée chez les sujets au parodonte sain et chez d'autres atteints de pathologie parodontale. Nos résultats montrent, pendant les premières années suivant l'extraction, que l'égression est principalement due à la croissance parodontale, et c'est seulement plus tard ou en présence de pathologie parodontale que le franchissement du plan d'occlusion est dû principalement à l'éruption active.

O presente documento é resultado de uma pesquisa sobre o tema cidade e comércio, e aborda como objeto de estudo empírico as galerias edificadas em Juiz de Fora após os anos 2000. A área central de Juiz de Fora é marcada por inúmeras galerias comerciais que, em conjunto com os calçadões, formam um “shopping a céu aberto”. Atualmente, a cidade passa por um processo de polinuclearização e expansão, através de novos shoppings centers. Neste mesmo período, após um recesso na construção de novas galerias, a cidade recebe dois exemplares desta tipologia. Há alguns estudos que apontam a importância das galerias para a manutenção da centralidade do Centro de Juiz de Fora, entretanto, essas pesquisas deixam uma lacuna quanto aos agentes responsáveis pela produção dos edifícios de galerias na cidade. O objetivo da pesquisa foi evidenciar, por meio das especificidades dos projetos arquitetônicos, os supostos motivos pelos quais as galerias continuam a ser edificadas em Juiz de Fora e identificar os seus agentes produtores. Seguindo essa premissa, foi colocada a seguinte questão: por que a tipologia de galerias se repete, atualmente, em Juiz de Fora, quais são as demandas do projeto arquitetônico contemporâneo, e, ainda, quais são os agentes responsáveis por sua produção? Deste modo, a dissertação pautou-se em uma metodologia baseada em uma revisão de literatura com o propósito de coletar dados sobre as galerias no mundo e, sobretudo, em Juiz de Fora. Empiricamente, foram analisadas duas galerias, construídas após o ano 2000, através da observação em campo e levantamentos fotográficos e filmográficos. Após a identificação dos agentes participantes nas ações que moveram a construção dessas galerias, utilizou-se o recurso de entrevistas com o intuito de obter dados e informações precisas dos motivos que os levaram a decisão de construí-las. Os resultados desta pesquisa contribuíram para o entendimento da produção das galerias em Juiz de Fora no cenário contemporâneo. Concluiu-se que os edifícios de galerias são produzidos pelo interesse especulativo imobiliário, que se aproveita do seu sucesso como tipologia comercial para aferir lucros. Igualmente, a produção de novas galerias está ligada ao espaço favorável que se encontra na área central da cidade, por se aproveitar dos fluxos da rede estabelecida e, quando pertinente, da ampliação, onde essa tipologia é inexistente.
The present document is the result of a research about the theme city and commerce that approaches as object of empirical study the arcades built in Juiz de Fora after the years 2000. The central area of Juiz de Fora is marked by several arcades that, together with the boardwalks, form an "open shopping mall". Currently, a city undergoes through a process of polynuclearization and distribution of new shopping centers. In this same period, after a recession in the construction of new arcades, the city receives two exemplars of this typology. There are some studies that point out an importance of the arcades for a maintenance of the centrality of the downtown area of Juiz de Fora, however, this research left a gap about the agents responsible for production of the arcades buildings in the city. The objective of the research was evidenced by the specificities of the architectural projects, the supposed reasons by which the arcades continue to be built in Juiz de Fora and identify their producing agents. Following this premise, it was placed this questions: why is the typology of arcades currently repeated in Juiz de Fora, what are the demands of the contemporary architectural project, and also, what are the agents responsible for its production? Thus, the dissertation followed a methodology based on a literature review with the purpose of collecting data on how arcades in the world, especially in Juiz de Fora. Empirically, two galleries constructed after the year 2000 were analyzed through field observation and photographic and filmographic surveys. After identifying the agents participating in the actions that lead the arcades construction, it was used the interviews feature to obtain accurate data and information on the actions that lead to a construction decision. The results of this research contribuited for the understanding of the production of the arcades in Juiz de Fora at the contemporary scenery. It was concluded that arcades buildings are produced by speculative real estate interest, which take advantage of their success as a commercial typology to gauge profits. Likewise, a production of new arcades is linked to the favorable space that is in the central area of the city, by taking advantage of the network flows established and, when pertinent, of the expansion where typology is nonexistent.

Analysing the ancient spaces designed for commerce in the history of civilisation it is possible notice that such places were not just used for the exchange of goods, but were also a place for meeting and for public life of citizens, as was the case of the Arabian bazaar, the Greek ágora and the Paris markets. This use of public space for commerce will undergo great changes after the Industrial Revolution, when products began to be produced in large scale and when population as a whole started to have access to the the places that sold these goods. It is the time of the appearance of big department stores and commercial arcades. Arcades, also called passages, first appeared in Paris, in the end of the 19th century, and spred throughout the world, modifying the relations between public and private in the urban space of cities. Being a private facility, accessible to the public in general, it was possible to browse through it without buying something. Differently from indoor shopping centres these spaces related in a more open way with the city, without visible barriers between public, private or semi-private spaces. In São Paulo commercial arcades appeared in the 20th century, following the Frnech idea of increasing the "profitable" areas of buildings. Most of them exist up to now and are located downtown. With their uses focused on commerce, many of them have specialised in one type of product. They are still used as passages by pedestrians who only wish to cross blocks through their interior. This research aims to analyse some of these places from the point of view of the relation established between public and private spaces taking into consideration the access, internal circulation and other important items in the project of each one of these arcades.
Ao analisar os antigos espaços destinados ao comércio na história da civilização mundial pode-se notar que esses locais não só se destinavam à troca de mercadorias excedentes, mas também funcionavam como lugar do encontro e da vida pública dos cidadãos, como era o caso do bazaar árabe, da ágora grega e dos mercados de Paris. Este uso do espaço público para o comércio irá sofrer grandes modificações com a Revolução Industrial, quando as mercadorias passaram a ser produzidas em grande escala e a população como um todo passou a ter acesso ao local de venda destes produtos. É a época do surgimento das grandes lojas de departamento e das galerias comerciais. As galerias, também chamadas de passagens, surgiram em Paris, no século XIX e se espalharam pelo mundo, modificando as relações entre público e privado no espaço urbano das cidades. Por ser um espaço privado, acessível ao público em geral, pôde-se transitar nele sem que a necessidade de consumir algo. Diferentemente dos centros de compras fechados, estes espaços se relacionavam de forma mais aberta com a cidade, sem barreiras tão definidas entre os espaços públicos e privados ou semi-privados. Em São Paulo as galerias comerciais surgiram no século XX, tendo como base a idéia francesa e com a intenção de aumentar as áreas "rentáveis" dos edifícios. A grande maioria delas existe até hoje e está localizada no Centro Novo da cidade. Com seus usos destinados ao comércio e serviços, muitas delas acabaram por se especializar em algum tipo de produto. São utilizadas também como passagem para os pedestres que querem apenas cruzar as quadras através de seu interior.Esta pesquisa visa a análise de alguns destes lugares, do ponto de vista da relação que estabelecem entre os espaços público e privado, levando em conta os acessos, circulação interna e outros pontos importantes do projeto de cada uma dessas galerias.

”Fashion is the eternal recurrence of the new. Are there nevertheless motifs of redemption precisely in fashion?” This question, left unanswered in Walter Benjamin’s late text “Central Park”, is the point of departure for this thesis. Benjamin is both adamant and explicit in his critique of fashion’s alienating influence on the collective, but despite this he seems at times to ascribe to it some kind of revolutionary potential. The most well-known instance of this is the 14th thesis of “Theses on the Concept of History”. There, Benjamin compares the ”tiger’s leap” of sartorial citation to the historical leap of the Marxist revolution. Employing Benjamin’s philosophy of history as a theoretical framework, this thesis examines the roles ascribed to fashion in The Arcades Project, in order to elaborate on its political potential in Benjamin’s late thinking, as well as to understand this potential in light of Benjamin’s critique of fashion as fetishism and phantasmagoria.

THE BLIND ARCADE is a collection of poems chronicling several of the pressing conditions of contemporary American life: poverty and class, sex, violence, hunger, longing and mourning, and the inverse of the latter, requited love and emotional ecstasy. The poems are set in crowded markets, on trains and in apartment bedrooms, city squares and campus quads, dentist chairs, bridges, riverbanks, and kitchens. This contemporary and familiar backdrop dictates the form of most of these poems to be free verse, although terza rima, ekphrastic, haiku, and prose forms are also utilized. The book presents its poems in three sections. As if a series of decorative arches in a blind arcade, they are not broken down into themes. Rather, they are each utilized and are ordered around the weight of their individual topics to demonstrate the capriciousness of life.

Resumo: A necessidade de identificação para a humanidade tem a sua origem na própria natureza social do homem e nos seus irredutíveis anseios de diferenciar-se dos seus semelhantes. Assim sendo e em virtude das mudanças evolutivas acontecidas nas organizações coletivas que ele integra, não pode surpreender que, nos dias atuais, exista uma notória exigência nesse sentido, dos âmbitos sociais, civis, administrativos, comerciais e penais. Nesse contexto, a determinação do gênero constitui um dos objetivos principais dos peritos médicolegistas e odontolegistas, quando responsáveis pelo exame antropológico de ossadas humanas. No presente estudo, foram utilizados 112 modelos inferiores de gesso ortodôntico tipo 3, correspondentes a igual número de pacientes, 56 do gênero masculino e 56 do feminino, assistidos na Clínica de Ortodontia do IUCEDDU, Instituto Universitario Centro de Estudio y Diagnóstico de las Disgnacias del Uruguay, localizada na cidade de Montevidéu, com idades compreendidas entre 21 e 60 anos, com o objetivo de estabelecer um método confiável para a determinação do gênero, por meio de medidas realizadas nas arcadas dentárias e aplicar as citadas à antropologia forense, como ferramentas de auxílio nos processos de investigação ou identificação. Constatou-se que das medidas e cálculos efetivados (largura mésio-distal e distância gengivo-incisal do 33 e 43; distância intercanina; índice mandibular canino; área do triângulo formado pelos segmentos A, C e B - compreendidos entre os pontos mais proeminentes na união das faces vestibular e distal dos dentes 36 e 46 e o ponto interincisivo, e a distância entre os pontos definidos para as peças 36 e 46-, e altura do mesmo - segmento H, perpendicular a B que passa pelo ponto interincisivo -), só se mostraram significativamente dimórficas a largura mésio-distal e distância gengivo-incisal do 43 e a área do triângulo. Obteve-se um modelo de regressão logística para determinar o gênero, com um grau de confiabilidade de 72,3% e uma árvore de classificação e regressão, com um de 77,7%. Concluiu-se que há possibilidades de aplicar os citados dados à antropologia forense, como ferramentas de auxílio nos processos de investigação ou identificação
Abstract: Human identification requirement has its origin in social nature of man and its irreducible wishes to differentiate itself from its peers.Therefore and in front of social evolutionary changes that happened in collective organizations, it's no wonder that nowadays, there is a noticeable demand in this sense, from social, civil, administrative, commercial and criminal areas. In this context, gender determination is a major goal of forensic medical and odontologic experts, when responsibles for anthropology examination of human remains. In this study, were used 112 inferior dental stone casts, type 3 orthodontic, of 112 patients (56 males, 56 females), assisted in the Clinic of Orthodontics IUCEDDU, Instituto Universitario Centro de Estudios y Diagnóstico de las Disgnacias del Uruguay, located in Montevideo, aged between 21 and 60 years. The aim of this research was to establish a reliable method for gender determination by means of dental arch measurements and to use them in forensic anthropology, simplificating investigation or identification process. Several measurements and calculations were made effective, such as mesiodistal width and gingivo-incisal distance of both mandibular canines (33 and 43), intercanine distance (space between the cusps of the same teeth), mandibular canine index (ratio between mesiodistal width and canine arch width or intercanine distance), area of the triangle bounded by the segments A (from the most proeminent point of the angle formed by the tangents of the buccal and distal faces of the left first molar, to the interincisor point), C (from the most proeminent point of the angle formed by the tangents of the buccal and distal faces of the right first molar, to the interincisor point), and B (the distance between the same points of the first molars), and segment H (height or altitude of the triangle, perpendicular to B, passing through interincisor point). It was observed significant sexual dimorphism only at the mesiodistal width and gingivo-incisal distance of right canine (43), and the area of the triangle. The authors obtained a logit regression model to determine the gender with a degree of reliability of 72,3% and a classification and regression tree with a reliability rate of 77,7%. It was concluded that these data can be applied in forensic anthropology, as auxiliary tools in the investigation or identification process

This thesis is an exaggerated perspective arcade. The exaggerated perspective has a vantage point that is placed across the street from the site and is differentiated from the sidewalk. Therefore, the position at which the arcade is optimally viewed is demarcated. Over its 100 feet in length, the arcade converges and all the elements within the false perspective diminish in size to support the optical illusion. Constructed perspective techniques and anamorphic perspective techniques are utilized to construct this ideal view of the arcade between the two buildings.

Abstract:
The modern gaze developed through a network of changes to perception during the nineteenth century. A significant element within these changes is Walter Benjamin's concept of the 'aura'. This research paper examines the social aura contained in the space of a nineteenth century European city, the aural perception of an individual mobile gaze, and the decay of the aura that results from the decline of experience in the contemporary metropolis. I have linked the decline of experience and loss of aura to the arrival of photography in the 1840's. This new technology had the ability to fix a visual image into a permanent record and as recorder of reality, had a large impact on perception. For example, it had the ability to bring the exotic near, and provide close-ups of natural objects not possible with the naked eye. The camera 'sees' in a different way to how the eye 'sees'', yet photographic seeing is accepted as being the normal mode of perception. It is a way to capture an experience, and to relive this at a later date by providing a reference point for memory; the modern gaze looks back, it lacks a lived experience in the now

Dans Arcadia de Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586), les représentations de la nature témoignent de la richesse de l’univers artistique de l’auteur. Le titre de l’œuvre suggère que le socle esthétique sur lequel repose la mimesis sidnéienne est ancré dans l’imitation de la tradition poétique pastorale. L’imitation littéraire est certes au cœur du processus de création sur lequel repose la composition de l’œuvre. Cependant, le texte de Sidney est bien plus qu’une autre Arcadie littéraire inspirée des Bucoliques de Virgile ou de L’Arcadie de Jacopo Sannazaro. Le texte fait s’imbriquer les récits héroïques qui empruntent à l’épopée les repères esthétiques sur lesquels reposent l’évocation du locus terribilis, vision antagoniste du locus amoenus. L’œuvre est donc animée par une passion pour la fiction au point que la littérature et la lecture se substituent à l’intrigue en tant que sujet même de l’œuvre. Cette conception de la création littéraire comme acte réflexif imprègne la représentation de la nature qui devient donc dans certains passages un texte dans le texte, une nature textualisée. Le champ de la réflexivité s’étend à d’autres domaines de la création artistique et notamment aux arts plastiques dont l’esthétique informe à la fois la représentation de la nature et la matière verbale de l’œuvre. L’affinité entre les formes verbales et les formes visuelles est sous-tendue par une esthétique commune que l’on doit replacer dans le contexte du mouvement du maniérisme. Paradoxalement, l’unité de cette œuvre protéiforme réside dans sa fragmentation dont résulte une esthétique du détail. L’énergie créative de l’auteur s’illustre en effet dans la représentation de petites natures dont l’esthétique témoigne de la beauté de son univers artistique

The title of the literary work suggests that the aesthetic foundations on which the Sidneyan mimesis lies are rooted in the imitation of the pastoral poetic tradition. Literary imitation lies at the core of the creative process from which the text proceeds. Yet, Philip Sidney’s work goes beyond the vision of nature as locus amoenus associated with Virgil’s Bucolics or Jacopo Sannazaro’s own Arcadia. The text features embedded narratives recounting heroic tales which draw on the epic literary tradition and lead to the representation of nature as locus terribilis. The passion for fiction with which Arcadia is imbued leads to a shift from the plot to the essence of literature as the main focus of Sidney’s work. This conception of literary creation as a reflexive praxis pervades the representation of nature which, in parts of the text, becomes a text within the text, a textualized nature. The spectrum of the reflexive dynamics encompasses several artistic areas including the plastic arts which inform both the aesthetics of the representation of nature and that of the verbal matter. The correspondences between the visual forms and the verbal ones spring from a common aesthetics which ties to the artistic context of mannerism. Paradoxically, the unity of this multifarious work lies in its fragmented dimension from which derives an aesthetics of the detail. Indeed, the illustration of author’s creative energy resides in the depictions of a small-scale nature and minute details which illustrate the beauty of his artistic environment

This work intends to analyze the role played for the arcades in the constitution of the urbanity of the central area of Juiz de Fora. The case in question if becomes sufficiently significant for perceives that it inside presents as particular of the current Brazilian urban reality - while the majority of average cities of the country tries process of urban decentralization, in that city the process is another one: each time more the center accumulates, it diversifies e, for consequence, it becomes more important before the remain of the city. The research, therefore, intends to analyze the transformations of the downtown urban net understood by the central triangle conformed by the three main avenues of the city. This region was focused at three historical moments: First, the analysis approaches the constitution of the urban nucleus, from the transformation of important roads of the period of the Empire in the main avenues of the area in question. The second part privileges the modifications of the central public mesh with the advent and proliferation of the arcades, over all enters the decades of 1950 and 1990, that they had been consolidated as specific traces of the urbanity of Juiz de Fora. Finally, the study concentrates in the current period, analyzing the aesthetic alterations printed to the net of arcades, which would confer to the center of the city a new appearance.
A disserta??o tem por objetivo analisar o papel desempenhado pelas galerias na constitui??o da urbanidade da ?rea central de Juiz de Fora. O caso em quest?o se torna bastante significativo por percebemos que ele se apresenta como particular dentro da atual realidade urbana brasileira enquanto a maioria de cidades m?dias do pa?s experimenta processo de descentraliza??o urbana, naquela cidade o processo ? outro: cada vez mais o centro se adensa, se diversifica e, por conseq??ncia, se torna mais importante perante o restante do munic?pio. A pesquisa, portanto, teve por objetivo analisar as transforma??es do tra?ado urbano do centro da cidade compreendido pelo tri?ngulo central conformado pelas tr?s principais avenidas da cidade. Giovan Mario Crescimbeni (1663-1728), premier gardien général de l’Arcadie, donne à cette académie une dimension péninsulaire par la création d’implantations locales nommées colonies, fondées par initiatives individuelles d’académiciens dans de nombreux centres urbains italiens, et plus ponctuellement dans d’autres villes d’Europe, et ce dès 1692 à Arezzo. Dedicated to pastoral poetry and critical of the exuberance of the Baroque style of the previous century, the academy of Arcadia was founded in Rome on 5 October 1690 by the initiative of fourteen men of letters who attended the Royal Academy of Christine of Sweden and the Roman academy of the Infecondi. Giovan Mario Crescimbeni (1663-1728), the first General Guardian of the Arcadia, gave this academy a peninsular dimension through the creation of local settlements called colonies, founded by individual initiatives of academics in many Italian urban centres, and more occasionally in other European cities, as early as 1692 in Arezzo. The originality of Arcadia lies in its ability to establish a vast institutional network on the scale of the peninsula and to unite a group of more than 9,600 men and women of letters between 1690 and 1800: how did the Arcadian model adapt to the various local contexts and how did individual initiatives organize the creation and perpetuation of the colonies? How did Arcadia work to build up local intellectual circles by proposing a formalisation of literary groups by the colonies? Abstract:
In this thesis, the work of Walter Benjamin is examined for relationships to developments in internet culture and societies. Beginning with Benjamin's use of allegories in illuminating the growth of bourgeois culture in 19th century Paris, particularly the flaneur, the feuilletonist, and the sandwichboardman, this thesis then moves to discuss the relationship between Benjamin's method and how they can show structures in the formation and attraction of social aggregator websites (also known as social bookmarking) and social networking. The first part of the thesis discusses social aggregators, in particular the websites reddit, Digg, and MetaFilter. This section examines the history and development of these sites, how they work, and what the community response to them has so far been, before moving into a discussion of how these structures affect the individual user. The individual user on these sites is seen as analogous to the flaneur, who in strolling through the crowds served an economic purpose of making their consumption public. In this manner, the user turns "slack" (as the site reddit puts it) into economic work. The transformation of this slack into economic benefit is seen as belonging to an economic cycle first developed by Benjamin to explain the work of the feuilletonist and the decline of the visual aspect of this cycle from the extravagant flaneur to the destitute sandwichboardman. The second part of the thesis explores the history and technology of social networking, in particular the websites LiveJournal, MySpace, and Facebook. Here the sites are discussed in light of Benjamin's elucidation of the development of the bourgeois individual, particularly in the aspects of the bourgeois collector and the evolution of the private interior. In particular, the arcades of 19th century Paris are seen as being instructional as to how to be a modern, urban individual; the social networking site is seen as serving an analogous purpose for training individuals how to be modern, digital citizens. Finally, Benjamin's technique of the allegory, while useful in highlighing certain trends in social networking is seen as being pushed to its limits in addressing the rhetoric of a dominant ideology in digital life, that of technolibertarianism/transhumanism.

Inicialmente tido como um produto audiovisual principalmente televisivo, o videoclipe, nos últimos anos, tem se expandido e ganhado força no ambiente virtual. Abarcando as transformações tecnológicas, principalmente no âmbito da interatividade na web, culmina com a aparição dos videoclipes interativos. Que, por sua vez, combinam aspectos de diversos meios, como, por exemplo, da televisão, do cinema e da arte digital, para criar narrativas nas quais os espectadores podem modificar os resultados através da sua intervenção em um meio digital. Uma das bandas que se destaca nessa vertente é o Arcade Fire, que teve, ao longo de seu trajeto, quatro projetos audiovisuais interativos realizados por dois diretores, Vincent Morisset e Chris Milk e, em alguns casos, em parceria com a Google. Os videoclipes em questão são: Neon Bible (Vincent Morisset, 2007), Sprawl II (Moutains beyond mountains) (Vincent Morisset, 2010), The Wilderness Dowtown (Chris Milk, 2010) e Just a Reflektor (Vincent Morisset, 2013). Através da investigação do que é o videoclipe (inicialmente em seu formato não interativo), do ambiente no qual florescem as experiências interativas desse formato, da sua conexão com as narrativas digitais, bem como do aprofundamento acerca dos elementos envolvidos na produção dos clipes interativos feitos para o Arcade Fire, será produzida uma análise sobre os trabalhos realizados para a banda.
Initially had as an audiovisual product turned primarily to the television, the music video, in recent years, has expanded and gained strength in the virtual environment. Embracing the technological changes, particularly in the context of interactivity on the web, it culminates with the appearance of the interactive video clips. Those, in turn, combine aspects of various media such as television, film and digital art to create narratives in which the viewers can modify the results through their intervention in a digital environment. One of the bands that stands out in this aspect is Arcade Fire, who had, along its path, four interactive audiovisual projects carried out by two directors, Vincent Morisset and Chris Milk and, in some cases, in partnership with Google. Their music videos are: Neon Bible (Vincent Morisset, 2007), Sprawl II (Moutains beyond mountains) (Vincent Morisset, 2010), The Wilderness Dowtown (Chris Milk, 2010) and Just a Reflektor (Vincent Morisset, 2013). We propose an analysis of the interactive music videos produced for Arcade Fire, through the investigation of the music video (initially in its non-interactive format), the environment in which the experience of this interactive format flourished, its connection with the digital narratives, as well as a focus on the elements involved in the production of the band’s interactive videos.

Arcades are blood vessels that form direct connections between two arteries or arterioles. Because they are supplied with blood from two sources, arcades can function as alternative flow pathways following obstruction of arteries or arterioles, as in coronary and peripheral vascular disease and stroke. In response to changes in blood flow or metabolic conditions, vascular networks undergo structural adaptation or remodeling, which includes structural changes of the existing vessels and growth of new vessels. Following obstruction of a blood supply, arcade vessels may adjust their internal diameters chronically to convert the alternative pathways into main blood distribution vessels. The overall goal of this dissertation was to examine structural changes in the internal diameter of a single arcade artery and the arterioles of an arcade network following changes in blood flow, using experimental and theoretical approaches. Diameter changes of the mouse gracilis arcade artery were observed up to 56 days following resection of one of its two blood supplies. Overall, diameters increased to a maximum around day 21 and then declined. The diameter changes were spatially non-uniform, being largest towards the point of resection, providing transiently increased perfusion to the most affected regions. Observed diameter changes were compared with predictions of a theoretical model, in which diameter varies in response to stimuli derived from local metabolic and hemodynamic conditions. Good agreement was found when effects of a time-delayed growth stimulus in regions of reduced perfusion were included, with a delay of about 7 days. The effectiveness of arcades in maintaining perfusion both immediately following obstruction and after structural adaptation in the arteriolar arcade network between two feed artery branches of the pig triceps brachii muscle was examined. Morphometric data from vascular casting and published data were used to develop a computational model for the hemodynamics and structural adaptation of the network in response to local stimuli. The results show that the arcades provide alternative flow pathways to the region initially supplied by the obstructed branch and that structural adaptation can lead to improved flow restoration following interruption of blood flow.

As pesquisas científicas e clínicas normalmente concordam que os fatores genéticos são de maior significado do que os fatores ambientais para o desenvolvimento das maloclusões. Os estudos em gêmeos semelhantes tentam comprovar esta afirmativa. A aplicação do método para avaliar a variância genética e ambiental em gêmeos envolve a hipótese de que não existem desigualdades médias ou variação total entre os gêmeos monozigóticos. Por outro lado, os gêmeos dizigóticos compartilham 50% do seu genótipo. Estimativas de herdabilidade (h2) foram obtidas para uma série de traços oclusais em trinta e seis pares de gêmeos usando método imparcial desenvolvido para variâncias de heterogeneidade entre as zigosidades. As correlações das herdabilidades (r) não foram significativas (∝=0,05) para os traços de largura entre os caninos superiores e inferiores, largura entre os primeiros molares superiores, profundidade das arcadas superiores e inferiores, relação vertical e horizontal anterior, relação sagital entre os molares, diastemas superiores e apinhamento inferior. Porém, para a presença de diastemas inferiores e a ocorrência de apinhamento superior na região anterior das arcadas, a herdabilidade variou de 73% a 95%. Quanto as simetrias dentárias e das arcadas, dentro e entre os pares de gêmeos, os resultados indicaram a concordância (H) de até 80%, principalmente nos gêmeos monozigóticos.

À l’heure présente, la communauté scientifique des sciences de la Terre, dont les travaux permettent de définir cet âge de l’Anthropocène dans lequel nous prendrions désormais pied, se voit rejointe dans sa démarche par des intellectuels, des artistes, des architectes et/ou des activistes. Beaucoup se distinguent par leur intérêt pour l’expérience, par leur goût pour l’instrumentation, les unités de mesure, les observables, les données, les capteurs… En d’autres termes, ils font leur la nécessité de se doter d’un appareil sensible, quel qu’il soit, afin de requalifier la notion de nature. Un « art comme expérience » se présente alors en tant que connaissance par expérimentation d’une situation où l’ontologie de la relation à la nature est perturbée, altérée sinon bouleversée par l’intrusion de nouveaux êtres et par la modification conséquente de l’échelle de perception et d’action des humains. Du fait des distorsions d’échelles et de temporalités impliquées dans la notion d’Anthropocène, cette connaissance ne peut qu’être enquête. Enquête dessinant de nouveaux cosmogrammes… Si le paradigme d’un art d’investigation au sein d’écologies anthropisées prend consistance, alors il nous faudra tout réévaluer de notre approche esthétique et sensible des tremblements du monde…
Considering the paradigm of the inquiry (as John Dewey's theory defines it) as a specific framework in arts and design, this research analyses the sense-making capacity of art forms in revealing the Anthropocene. Because humanity enters in the age of the Anthropocene —an age defined by all-consuming modes of production and by deep alteration of the Earth equilibriums—, this research describes the ontological modes and apparatus by which arts reconnect with Nature and felt natural environment. How do practices of art and our ways of interpreting art reflect, reverberate, contest, the ecological realities that we now face, in the age of the Anthropocene?

Cette thèse vise à donner corps à la notion d'Arcadie chez Virgile en appliquant les méthodes de la stylistique et de la métrique. Souvent confondue avec l'idylle théocritéenne, ou avec l'Âge d'or, l'Arcadie, récurrente dans les trois recueils virgiliens, apparaît comme une utopie idéale mais fuyante, car échappant à toute définition homogène. Le choix de cette contrée grecque du Péloponnèse, austère et isolée, repose chez notre poète sur un substrat mythique arcadien très riche qui englobe la naissance du lyrisme, les récits archéologiques des temps primitifs de l'homme, et l'aspiration à l'otium pastoral, au moment où grondent les guerres civiles. La croyance dans les origines arcadiennes de Rome, diffusées par les légendes oenotriennes, était attestée par les historiens contemporains. Virgile choisit donc de représenter une Arcadie latine, qui sera une chance nouvelle pour l'Italie. Cette Arcadie, qui naît comme un manifeste poétique dans les Bucoliques, est une hypotypose utopique prenant en référence le lyrisme de Pan, c'est-à-dire une poésie de l'éloge à la vie, fondée sur l'enchantement de la forêt, sur l'écho et l'illusion, sans que soient négligées pour autant les souffrances humaines. Cette polyphonie de la nature va au-delà des habitudes de la poésie antique narrative, et l'on peut parler à son sujet de poésie pure, au sens moderne. Mais Virgile entend aussi construire son Arcadie : il lui donne une dimension sociale, basée sur le travail agricole, et capable d'assurer le bien-être ; il refonde enfin Rome sur le mythe d'Evandre, précurseur d'Auguste, pour effacer le fratricide originel, et croire en un renouveau des temps. Often merged with the Theocritean idyll, or with the Golden age, Arcadia, recurring in three Virgilian poetic collections, appears as an ideal but elusive utopia, because of escaping any homogeneous definition. The choice by our poet of this part of the Greek country of Peloponnesus, austere and isolated, is founded on a very rich mythical Arcadian substratum which contains the birth of the lyricism, the archaeological narratives of the primitive times of man, and the pursuit of the pastoral otium, as the civil wars mutter. The faith in the Arcadian origins of Rome, spread by the Enotrian legends, was attested by the contemporary historians. Virgil thus chooses to represent a Latin Arcadia, which will be a new chance for Italy. This Arcadia, which is born as a poetic manifesto in The Bucolics, is a utopian hypotyposis taking in reference the lyricism of Pan, which is a Poetry of eulogy of life, based on the forest enchantment, on the echo and the illusion, but which does not neglect, for all that, the human sufferings. This polyphony of the nature goes beyond the habits of the antique narrative poetry, and we can speak to its subject of pure poetry in the modern sense of the words. But Virgil also intends to build his Arcadia: he gives it a social dimension, based on the agricultural work, and capable of assuring the well-being; he eventually refounds Rome on the myth of Evander, precursor of August, to erase the original fratricide, and to believe in a revival of times. Thus, Arcadia is an active utopia, profoundly registered in Virgils thought, which presents on this point a continuous and coherent evolution

Abstract:
This thesis starts from the point of departure that Sidney's claim in his Defence of Poetry that the purpose of literature is to delight and instruct a given audience is both an accurate and important guiding principle behind the creation of his two Arcadias. By their author's criteria, Sidney's works seek not only to provide diverting images of a fictive world, but to insure that these images serve some specific moral, didactic purpose. The manner in which Sidney goes about achieving this end is, however, less simplistic than the ordinary understanding of didactic literature connotes. The most historically determined aspect of the Arcadia 's didacticism is its extensive and strategic deployment of rhetorical figuration. Rhetoric in Sidney's Renaissance England represented both a vital tool in the smooth running of political life and a signpost of literary genius. The Arcadia thus manipulates specific rhetorical figures and tropes both to demonstrate the great literary skill of its author as well as to depict an ethical and political ideal. Part One of the thesis first investigates the history of rhetorical theory and its impact on the reputation of Sidney's work. It then goes on to explore particular rhetorical devices employed most frequently and significantly in the Old and New Arcadias, drawing comparisons between the versions as to underscore the differences in stylistic procedure and dramatic content of each work. Other aspects of Sidney's rhetoricism, such as his treatment of paradox and his rhetorical character portrayal, are also studied in an effort to gauge the major differences between the Old and New Arcadias. The overall conclusions drawn indicate that Sidney adapts his rhetorical strategy to accommodate a more complex and mature vision of ethical behaviour in his revised work. The other key aspect of Sidney's didacticism is his self-conscious and contentious depiction of gender roles. That is, Sidney plays off varying aspects of traditionally gender-associated behaviour to portray his own vision of an heroic ethical ideal. For example, the Amazon and the transvestite become vehicles through which to explore aspects of femininity that are for Sidney wholly in concord with manifestations of heroism. Moreover, Sidney subverts traditional gendered conceptions of particular vices and virtues to illustrate a liberal attitude toward the potentialities of women and men. Part Two, then, is dedicated to drawing out Sidney's understanding of gender roles as they reflect and demonstrate his unique vision of an heroic ideal. The observations made about the rhetorical and gendered dimensions of Sidney's didacticism are brought together in the conclusion, where Sidney's rhetoric is situated within the context of gender. In other words, the gendered conception of Sidney's particular brand of rhetoric is brought to the fore and poised within the ethical framework it embodies.

Este estudo avaliou a habilidade de duas técnicas, uma convencional e uma de transferência direta do molde, para a montagem do modelo de gesso maxilar no articulador. Um único paciente do sexo feminino, 39 anos, portador de arcada superior de Classe I de Kennedy (desdentado posterior bilateral) foi usado para esta investigação. Foram obtidos 20 modelos de gesso em cada técnica, totalizando 40 montagens nos articuladores. Com o modelo maxilar montado, cada articulador foi fotografado do mesmo lado direito da radiografia em norma lateral da paciente, obtida com o arco facial montado em sua face. As medidas analisadas nos traçados realizados sobre as fotografias e na radiografia, foram obtidas calculando-se o ângulo entre a interseção do plano oclusal da maxila e o plano de referência horizontal (plano de Frankfurt), representado pelo arco facial na radiografia da paciente, comparando-o com o ângulo entre o plano oclusal do modelo de gesso e o ramo superior do articulador em ambas as técnicas, por meio do software UTHSCSA Image Tool. O dados foram submetidos à análise estatística. Os resultados deste estudo demonstraram uma capacidade maior de reprodução daquele ângulo quando uma técnica de transferência direta do molde é usada. Da mesma maneira, foi verificado uma distorção significante na reprodutibilidade dos modelos montados pela técnica convencional.
This study assessed the ability of two techniques to mount the maxillary cast in the articulator, a conventional technique and one of direct transfer of the maxillary arch impression from the patient\'s mouth to the articulator. A single female subject, 39 years old, with a partially edentulous arch, Kennedy´s Class I, was used in this investigation. It was obtained 20 casts in each technique, totaling 40 cast mountings in the articulators. With the maxillary cast mounted, each articulator was photographed in the same right side of the lateral skull cephalometric radiograph of the patient with the face-bow mounted in her face. The measures obtained by the photographic and cephalometric tracings were evaluated by calculating the angle made by the intersection of the maxillary occlusal plane with craniofacial horizontal reference plane (Frankfort´s plane) on the patient´s cephalogram and comparing it with the angle between the occlusal plane of the cast with the upper member of the articulators in both techniques using the UTHSCSA Image Tool computerized program. The measuring data was submitted to the statistical analysis. The results of this study demonstrated a better capacity of reproduction of that angle when a direct transfer technique is used. In the same way, it was found a significant low level of reproducibility in mounting the maxillary cast when a conventional technique is used.

El objetivo de la tesis es la elaboración de un plan de internacionalización de la empresa Arcadis en Latinoamérica, con el fin de expandir sus operaciones en algún mercado atractivo de la región. Actualmente la compañía presenta operaciones en Chile, Perú y Brasil en Latinoamérica, por lo que es atractivo para la empresa posicionarse en la región a partir de nuevas inversiones hacia otros mercados. La compañía tiene unos ingresos brutos de más de US$ 3.000 millones y una rentabilidad de su patrimonio cercana al 19%. Actualmente la empresa está bien posicionada en Chile, siendo top 5 en su rubro y top 10 a nivel global. Posee más de 28.000 empleados a nivel mundial y en Chile cuenta con una dotación cercana a los 500 profesionales. En Latinoamérica existen oportunidades reales y atractivas para seguir un plan de expansión, principalmente ligado al rubro de la minería, infraestructura y energía. Dentro de los países más destacados se encuentra Colombia, país que en los últimos 10 años ha ingresado con fuerza al mercado mundial gracias a su apertura de mercado, incentivos para la inversión extranjera, su estabilidad local y sus tratados de libre comercio TLC firmados con importantes país del orbe. Esta es una oportunidad para iniciar una internacionalización al país y aprovechar la demanda de ingeniería cada vez más compleja que se tendrá en Colombia. La forma de entrada propuesta al mercado colombiano es a través de la adquisición de una consultora de infraestructura local, con el fin de aprovechar el conocimiento del mercado interno, así como también de los profesionales expertos con el fin de comenzar operaciones bajo el alero de Arcadis. El plan de marketing deberá jugar un rol primordial para posicionar la marca en la industria y poder expandir las operaciones a otras áreas demandadas como es la minería. La evaluación económica realizada resultó ser rentable, bajo un horizonte de 9 años, a partir de la adquisición de la empresa local (año 0). Con una inversión inicial en torno a los US$650.000, una tasa de descuento de 24% y un periodo de retorno de la inversión de 6 años, sugieren un buen inicio para comenzar operaciones en Colombia. Por lo descrito anteriormente, se recomienda iniciar un estudio exhaustivo sobre el mercado colombiano, y posteriormente la ejecución del plan de internacionalización de Arcadis hacia Colombia.

As the United States shifted toward a service-based economy and an increasingly digital media environment, American youth -- particularly young men and boys -- found an opportunity to play with these values in the then-novel video game arcade. The video game industry first came of age between the successful commercialization of Pong in 1972 and the U.S. gaming industry crash of 1983. In the interim, economic and play practices in the arcade itself and media representations of the arcade and its habitués shaped and responded to the economic and cultural upheavals of the period. Arcade machines were the first computers many Americans confronted. Through public discourse about gaming and gamers, Americans engaged in a critical debate about computerization, the move to digital media culture, the restructuring of the U.S. labor economy, and the competitiveness of American youth -- particularly boys -- in a Cold War culture conceived as both hostile and technologically oriented. This study demonstrates that video gaming was an arena in which Americans grappled with larger tensions about masculinity, globalization, labor, and digitalization. By analyzing gaming as a practice of everyday life, this work not only offers a cultural history of this period of gaming, but critical insights into the crystallization of masculine identity in a postindustrial, postmodern economy.
