One hundred years ago, the museum was founded in Taiwan by the Japanese government. This “new” cultural institution did not exist in the past, so the distance between the museum and the public was to be expected. On the other hand, the expositions broadly took place around Taiwan, and although most of them were mainly for commercial purposes, these exhibitions have become a form of social memory for most of the Taiwanese people and to allow for experiencing art and world wonders (Lu Shao-Li 2005). The research presented aimed to investigate potential of subcritical fluid technology to effect Cl- release and transform compounds of copper alloy artefacts of cultural significance. The work intended to determine the most effective pH, temperature, and time combination subcritical treatment variables to: 1. transform or solvate insoluble or sparingly soluble copper compounds containing Cl - CuCl and Cu2(OH)3Cl (atacamite and clinoatacamite); 2. examine impact on typical patina compounds Cu2O and ‎Cu2CO3(OH)2 and to establish optimal conditions for their retention throughout treatment.

This dissertation is a museological study of the coming into being of a natural history museum, its building and its adherent zoological exhibition during the years around the First World War.
