Abstract:
Despite nearly two centuries of fascination in the scholarly world with the history of Sogdian culture there are still many under-researched areas. In particular, the history of the dissemination and enculturation of Christianity among Sogdians is one such area, which despite material and textual witness has not been studied autonomously. Instead, it has been incorporated into a broader discourse of the geographical-historical spread and enculturation of Christianity into the Central Asian landmass. The existing studies on religions in Sogdiana have represented Sogdian society as a mosaic of r

Corkill, Tessa. "Here and there: links between stone sources and aboriginal archaeological sites in Sydney, Australia." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1999. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27209.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aims of this research were to identify the distribution of potential sources of flaked stone found in Aboriginal archaeological sites in Australia's Sydney region, and to find methods suitable for directly relating artefacts and source materials. Ethnohistoric evidence for the procurement, manufacture or use of flaked stone in the region in the late 18th century (at "contact"), is sparse but tends to suggest that little was being used, particularly in the coastal zone. However, since the late nineteenth century, considerable quantities have been found throughout the area, in archaeolo

Abstract:
Information systems used in archaeological research have several needs that can be summarized as follows: interoperability among diverse, heterogeneous systems, making information available without significant delay, providing a sustainable approach to long-term preservation of data, and providing a suite of services to users of the system. In this thesis, we describe how digital library techniques can be employed to provide solutions to these problems and describe our experiences in creating a prototype for ETANA-DL. Abstract:
To date, no systematic study of the military equipment from the celebrated conflict sites of the Bella Judaica has been offered. Based on a large assemblage of military equipment that originated from over 70 sites throughout Palestine a typological database of the equipment was formed, the majority of which is hitherto unpublished. The arid conditions of the eastern sectors of Palestine have contributed to an excellent preservation of equipment made of perishable materials. Additionally, rare discoveries like the panoply of a Roman legionary enabled us to illustrate the images of the Roman sol

Abstract:
This thesis explores the interaction of numerous factors affecting economic productivity in England’s 17th-century tobacco trade with its Chesapeake colonies, particularly with an eye to transatlantic shipping. This is achieved here through the use of a network inspired analytical framework to provide an assessment of a range of elements surrounding the trade over the course of the 17th century, how these elements interacted, and the degree to which they affected the overall productivity tobacco market. Data used to these means include the extant body of relevant literature, historical documen

Abstract:
There is a tendency in archaeology dealing with watercraft landing sites in a wider context to assume a direct relationship between sites in coastal and shore-bound areas and the practise of landing, without any deeper practical or theoretical exploration of the reality of any such relationship. This problem has its origins in the poor archaeological and conceptual definitions of watercraft landing sites obstructing any real understanding of the role of these sites in the maritime cultural landscape. Landing sites are taken for granted and they are undervalued as an archaeological source of ex

Elephant ivory came either from Northeastern Libya, Southeastern Sudan via Egypt or northwestern Syria during this period. Hippopotamus ivory likewise was obtained from Syria, Palestine, or Egypt. This dissertation provides a survey of the available archaeological sources that have been discovered that help illuminate the history of the Northern Kingdom of Israel from King Omri (876 BCE) into the Assyrian Exile (721 BCE) of the Iron II a and b periods. This history is given in the Hebrew Scriptures as found in 1 Kings 16:16 to 2 Kings 17:6. To accomplish this research, several resources have been organized in a systematic approach. Abstract:
Within biological anthropology there is a movement toward the use of mo- lecular methods and their application to anthropological questions. In South Africa there is great potential for research in anthropological genetics as this country is a vast repository of skeletal remains. This study aims to develop novel methods of molecular sex determination for skeletal material and apply these to an archaeological collection of historical importance. The bone extraction method developed here is minimally destructive to skeletal material and does not interfere with any anthropometric landmarks
