Abstract:
Archaeological sites are currently considered as one of the most important tourism industry drivers, becoming an autonomous economy. Among the most outstanding archaeological sites in Algeria is the fort of Bani Hammad. This site is the first archaeological site classified by UNESCO in 1980, located in central Algeria in M'sila province. Given its importance, we conducted a scientific study to highlight its beautiful archaeological tourism components and national and international tourist attractions. Then, we revealed the tourism challenges and the physical and moral deterioration affecting this site. Also, we propose a preservation plan to promote this site’s touristic assets, enabling its transformation into a tourist destination competing with other archaeological sites in Algeria and the Maghreb; through a sustainable development plan of archaeological tourism, while preserving its historical identity and role. To this aim, we used a descriptive and quantitative analytical approach, starting with a theoretical and analytical analysis of various studies, plans, and documents related to this archaeological site's components. Then, we analyzed the geographical and statistical data of the tourist traffic over five years using the SPSS statistical program. Finally, we presented the results, developed a rehabilitation plan for the site, and suggested an essential set of recommendations.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine a model for developing sustainable tourism in archaeological sites. A qualitative and quantitative approach has been assumed in order to test a model of market orientation, where 11 experts were interviewed and 122 employees of archaeological sites answered the e-questionnaire. Design/methodology/approach Partial least squares path modelling regression was employed to examine the measurement and structural model. Findings The findings have revealed that market orientation and innovativeness positively and significantly influence tourism sustainability, measured in economic and social terms. Besides, tourist functionality has been determined as an antecedent of market orientation. Research limitations/implications This study is limited by the sample sizes of both researches. The model has second order constructs (market orientation, innovativeness and tourism sustainability) that include related concepts to increase parsimony and understand relations with other variables. As a result, separate effects of these dimensions have not been measured, which could report interesting findings in future-related studies. Practical implications The results suggest useful insights for managers to improve social and economic sustainability in archaeological sites. Innovativeness affects tourism sustainability, which reinforces the idea that offering technological and organisational innovations improve economic and social sustainability. Besides, it has been proved that market orientation is a necessary precondition to guarantee social and economic sustainability. Originality/value This paper assists scholars and practitioners by shedding light on the comprehension of tourism sustainability.

Abstract:
Tourism activity in general, with the heritage tourism sector in particular, represented the second inflow of foreign currency to Mexico in 2019 (pre-pandemic), with more than USD 24 million. According to local polls, the main purpose of travel is leisure. However, more than half of tourists (local and foreigner) who visit Mexico enjoy/visit an archaeological site, a museum, and/or a local community. The latter illustrates that the heritage tourism sector is a vital axis within the national and local economy, as well as to promote its research, conservation, and diffusion. Researchers claim that it can also be an important component for the cultural revitalization of communities. However, how well does a community benefit from the tourist activity of any particular heritage/archaeological site? Can they feel any connection with it if only a handful of community members benefit from it? Using the Cancun example, we will talk about the concept of “heritage tourism”, not only for its economic value but also for its potential for social/cultural assessments for local heritage. Secondly, we talk about how archaeology is performed and how pre-Hispanic sites play along as a tourist attraction, particularly from the Mexican perspective.

Abstract:
Samosir Island is in the middle of Lake Toba as part of a geological process related to Mount Toba's eruption. The existence of the lake itself becomes an attraction for a tourist attraction. There are various archaeological remains in the form of megalithic objects related to the Toba Batak community death ceremony tradition, which has lasted a long time. The procession of death and customs, which are still ongoing today, is considered a tourist attraction that will attract tourists if developed. The management of megalithic tradition as tourism objects in this region is relatively inadequate. Efforts to identify these objects are required, accompanied by descriptions of scientific information and building an ideal tourism concept. Therefore, burial container and other archaeological objects are the study's description, accompanied by the concept of developing tourism with local character as part of the discussion. The method in this research is descriptive analysis and literature study. Archaeological objects are described and interpreted inductively. The results of this study concluded that the archaeological remains on Samosir Island are dominated by burial containers, which belong to the megalithic tradition. This megalithic tradition is closely related to the conception of death ceremonies which is still sustained in the Batak Toba community today. The relationship between archaeological objects and community traditions can be packaged into tourism ideas of particular interest of local character. Tourism management that involves local communities is expected to impact economically and maintain both the traditions and archaeological objects themselves. This idea is also considered to have great potential for tourist attractions of a new perspective in Samosir Island.

Often studies on tourism come from the consumer perspective. However, this study focuses on the supply side of the industry using the wonders of Niah Cave which is located in interior Sarawak, Malaysia. Amongst others, Niah Cave has hundred thousands of swiftlet population and the world’s famous archaeological site to attract tourists. This article explores a venue whereby the tourism’s supply side, in this instance, the swiftlet population could be bridged with the industry’s consumer side. The evolvement of sustainability conscious consumers, particularly in the millennium era results in the advocation of consumption in a more sustainable manner, irrespective whether the products are man-made or in the forms of the natural environment. An interpretative research method with the like of observation and semi-structured in-depth interviews formed the data gathering tool. The Niah Cave was explored in late January 2017. Findings show that Niah Cave was literally on the tourist map due to its world’s famous archaeological site. The huge population of swiftlets with their nests attracted harvesters for decade. The processes of harvesting these nests which remarkably endured through climbing bamboo ladders and dangling ropes from cave ceilings, hundreds feet from the cave floor, charmed tourists

Abstract:
The archaeological site of Umm Qais is a popular tourist destination for both local and foreign tourists who come to appreciate the site’s archaeological history, scenic landscape, and panoramic perspective. The site was the focus of tourism planning, which included the construction of amenities and infrastructure, the creation of tourist circuits, and archaeological management. This development was linked to a rise in visitor numbers as well as the provision of a high level of service, such as parking, tickets, kiosks, restaurants, and cafés, to welcome visitors. The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of on-site tourist services and infrastructures, as well as those of visitors, and their geographical and temporal scope on the site. The study used a qualitative approach based on case study fieldwork as a research method to achieve this goal. Personal observation, interviews with site-related stakeholders, and a checklist were used to collect data during the fieldwork. Both tourism infrastructure and visitors were proven to have a detrimental influence on tourist attractions. The site’s aesthetic pollution and structural deterioration were caused by tourism services and infrastructure. Graffiti, vandalism, and trash left by visitors exerted strong negative impacts. Furthermore, spatial and temporal negative impacts were determined by the patterns of seasonal movement of visitors and the location of infrastructure. Thus, most of the impacts were concentrated in a small portion of the site, among the western theater, the panoramic view, and the traditional Ottoman village. This research sheds light on these challenges and makes recommendations in the areas of heritage management, tourism, and visitor impact management that may be of interest to on-the-ground decision makers as well as academics.

This impulsive impediment in the tourism and hospitality industry was not only unconstructive to the growth of the industry but the imminent influences on future tourism are also looking dim and muted. Virtual Reality has emerged as a new innovative approach to attract viewers though providing them a virtual experience of tourism a tour destination with enhanced technological version. Virtual reality is the new normal in the digital world. People are slowly gaining access to digital tourism experiences through Virtual Reality tourism concept. The increase in virtual reality tourism trend is most welcome thing globally. This trend capitalizes on the use of technology to make viewers experience a touring destination. It includes Virtual Reality tours through which a tourist or viewer can experience a tourist destination, hotel interiors, restaurant interiors, outdoor tourist attractions, shopping sites, archaeological inputs, museums, etc sitting in home. This viewer is made to experience complete visit of the destination through VR head gears and comply with his aspirations of touring. Without being physically present on the tourist site a viewer can become a tourist and see all sites as naturally as a tourister. But this usage of technology driven virtual reality tools are challenged by several factors.

Abstract This study contributes to the literature on archaeological tourism by investigating the impact of psychological distance on tourist’s continuity to visit or revisit the archaeological sites. Recent trends show tourist preferred to visit the natural beauty and modern art instead of archaeological sites. Archaeologist encounters a considerable amount of difficulties when they try to operate on economic and sites protection fronts simultaneously. This study has relied on construal level theory to determine the tourist intentions to visit or revisit the archaeological sites in different time contrast and social proximity with identity centrality and gender diversity. For this study, 868 responses were collected from tourists using a structured questionnaire and analysed by structural equation modelling. The study establishes the role of psychological distance, which offers a clear plan to the tourist to visit or revisit archaeological sites by understanding their religious, social, and historical connection to them. This research also provides a dynamic way of thinking for archaeologists, policy makers, and the managing institutions to assist the tourist to visit or revisit archaeological sites through using social ties and time-spans as unique alternatives. The notable findings of this study open the door for future research to bridge the economic and social aspects with site preservation and capacity parameters.

Abstract:
The interest in archaeological heritage sites and the possibilities for the development of archaeological tourism have been growing in the world in recent decades. Monuments of archeology are a separate phenomenon in the cultural system and are considered as a separate phenomenon in the field of inheritance and preservation of cultural identity. Revenues from archaeological tourism can be used to preserve archaeological objects and for educational purposes, which actually contributes to the sustainability of archaeological sites, including environmental, social, cultural, political, economic and educational aspects. The need to study the spatial patterns of the distribution of archaeological sites has determined the active use of mapping methods. Geoinformation technologies allow integrating existing registers of archaeological sites and cartographic materials into a single structured geoinformation product. Numerous monuments of material culture, identified on the territory of the Southern Federal District, reflect the successive stages of the cultural and historical development of the macroregion from ancient times to the Middle Ages. Archaeological sites on the territory of the Southern Federal District are conventionally divided into funerary, settlement, and ritual-religious monuments and are of significant interest not only for archaeologists, but also for tourists. The aim of this work is the geoinformation identification of areas of archaeological tourism in the territory of the Southern Federal District. ArcGIS (ESRI) acts as the basic GIS- platform, the initial data are information from the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Sites (historical and cultural monuments) of the peoples of the Russian Federation. The territorial distribution of archaeological sites in the administrative-territorial units of the Southern Federal District reflects the degree of archaeological study of the territory and promising areas for the development of archaeological tourism.

Mobilising the economic potential of the intangible cultural heritage, using it as the tourist attractions is in modern conditions the basis for sustainable development of historical settlements and historic areas. Bolgar Historical and Archaeological complex has passed a period of its formation and now is one of the largest and interesting conservation areas in the Russian Federation. Every year the tourist flow here is growing. Theatrical meeting in national traditions give a unique local flavor and are very popular among tourists. However, museum tourism product experiences a lack of ethnic component; and local population, irritated by mass tourist arrivals, is isolated from its formation. The difficulties, appearing as the result of searching the balance of market participants’ interests, are specific for the culture and tourism development in the whole world. Although the involvement of residents in local cultural projects is less expensive and more sustainable in the long term The problem of introduction of local population to the tourism development and the involvement of the intangible cultural heritage can be solved by the implementation of measures aimed at getting by the local population economic, social, cultural and other benefits. The article deals with the problem of introduction of local population in the processes of tourism development and the involvement of ethnic and cultural intangible heritage in tourist complex. Abstract:
Alternative tourism, specifically cultural tourism, has gained worldwide importance. This is reflected in the growing number of people preferring this type of leisure activity. However, and even though archaeological and religious contexts represent hubs of attraction for pilgrims and tourists, their development seems to generate social issues. The objective of this research is to analyse the social impact of cultural tourism, from the perspective of tradesmen living in the rural municipality of Tlaxcala, Mexico. Information was collected by surveys. Sample size was calculated using the non-probabilistic method (snowball), and 54 tradesmen owning establishments near tourist attractions, were interviewed. Results evidenced that tradesmen do perceive social problems including traffic congestion, increasing living costs, pollution, street vendors, and augmented competition between businesses. However, they appreciate the benefits of providing tourists with low-cost catering services, considering tourism to be positive or very positive. The conclusion is that economic benefits outweigh the social impacts generated by tourism. Highlights: The influx of pilgrims and tourists is generating some social problems in the receiving rural spaces. Tourism service providers derive little benefit due to the low-cost services in accommodation and meal offer to tourists. Social problems are increasing (road traffic, higher cost of living, pollution, street vendors) and greater competition between businesses. Tourist activity is considered good or very good since it contributes to local development.

Abstract:
Archaeological tourism received minimal attention from the Malaysian government although many archaeological sites in Malaysia have the potential to attract tourists. The number of tourists to these sites is still not promising. Hence, this study aimed to explore the tourist's perspective on how to promote Bujang Valley as an archaeological destination to stay competitive with other archaeological sites in the region to attract more tourists. 20 visitors were approached through convenience sampling for a semi-structured interview. Each interview session took approximately 30 minutes. Consent was obtained from each visitor before the interview was conducted. The findings showed that the promotion of Bujang Valley is inadequate. Publicity, advertising, and personal selling were among the suggested ways to promote the destination. Also, informants suggested promoting Bujang Valley through ambassador and World Heritage Site status. The research findings were expected to provide suggestions to the federal and local government, travel, and tourism practitioners in marketing communication efforts to attract more local and international tourists. Promotional efforts can be costly, strategic plan on the expenses is necessary to ensure the allocated budget for the promotional efforts is spent optimally to reach the varied audience and create awareness about archaeological sites among different target segment.

Tuva has a huge tourist potential, combining a unique variety of natural conditions with picturesque landscapes, richness of fauna and flora, preserved national traditions, unique monuments of nature and culture. Pristine nature, a large number of natural and archaeological sites, extensive hunting grounds – all this creates the basis for the development of domestic and international tourism in the region. The ancient history and diversity of natural conditions of the mountain area determined the traditional way of life of the Tuvinians, the life of Russian old believers, Buddhism and shamanism, which are of great interest to tourists. However, in the sphere of tourism of the Republic there are problems and limitations associated with the current state of the tourist infrastructure, etc. The purpose of this article is to identify the specifics of the development of ethnographic tourism in the Republic of Tuva, taking into account national and spiritual and moral aspects for the revival and preservation of ethnic and cultural heritage.

Abstract:
Sustainable tourism, in the cultural context, is a fundamental element for the economic development of some local communities. There are many factors that can influence the success of this type of tourism, but any action or strategy adopted should be closely related to the satisfaction of the tourist. This research focuses on a heritage destination of an archaeological nature, and is aimed at analyzing the profile of the cultural tourist and his/her level of satisfaction after visiting the site. Information was collected using a closed questionnaire given to tourists. An ANOVA analysis has been used to determine the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and satisfaction, with significant results found in relation to gender and income level. This study has helped to highlight what underlies the differences in tourists’ post-visit satisfaction. These analyses have provided information that can be used in the planning of future sustainable tourism marketing strategies; thus, this study provides some recommendations on how to improve the provision of services and the management of these types of heritage elements.

Abstract:
Conservationists are missing opportunities to protect species at mass tourism sites where wildlife itself is not the main tourist attraction. At such locations are ‘incidental ecotourists’, i.e. tourists with multiple interests who encounter wildlife or fragile ecosystems inadvertently. A case study from Lamanai Archaeological Reserve, Belize, reveals the motivations of incidental ecotourists and their impact on an endangered primate species, the black howler monkey, Alouatta pigra. Four hundred and seventy-one visitors were surveyed to assess their travel goals, conservation commitments, and reactions to viewing howler monkeys. Data were also collected on the behaviour of tourists and monkeys during encounters. More intense tourist interactions with howler monkeys were correlated with the number of tourists and the duration of the encounter; guided parties interacted more intensely than unguided parties. Tourists were largely unaware that these interactions may harm the howler monkeys. Qualitative observations of howler response to tourists suggest short- and long-term negative impacts. These impacts could be mitigated through more effective guide training, limiting tourist group size, and increasing entrance fees at the Reserve. Improving environmental education may reduce impacts and motivate some tourists to become advocates for conservation of endangered species.

Abstract:
Tourism is an important element of the social and economic development of Russia. The northern territories play an important role in the development of the Russian economy in general and the tourism industry in particular. Nordic tourism involves careful respect for environmental and social sustainability, the promotion of traditional local knowledge and value systems, and the preservation of local cultural heritage and cultural landscapes. The article analyses the promotion of the tourism potential of Yakutia. The northern territories of Russia are rich in natural resources and economic potential but do not have an effective tourist infrastructure due to the harsh climate and vast territories of permafrost. The study presents the results of the analysis of the main tourist routes of the Sakha Republic. The main factors for the development of tourism were determined by a set of landscape characteristics (unique nature of the Lena River, biological diversity of flora and fauna), ethnocultural and historical context, as well as infrastructure considerations (proximity to the capital, inexpensive transport, and engineering systems). The study demonstrated that scientific tourism in Central Yakutia is quite real and has great prospects due to the unique landscapes. It can also give impetus to new scientific discoveries. Defining and describing cultural landscapes, collecting field materials and mapping cultural and landscape zoning can simplify the work for the creators of tourist routes in the future.

Abstract:
Since the early 1980s, the information and communication revolution created radical changes in the international tourist industry in all the advanced and developing societies even though the said changes were relatively slow in the developing countries. Electronic tourism dominated tourist industry on the international level. For example, identifying tourist Sites electronically has become a reality by connecting the disabled tourists with the information and communication technology (ICT) as a facility to enhance and enrich their capabilities to recognize tourist sites. Assistive technology includes all the modern technology means used by the disabled to get to know the tourist and archaeological sites, through the various technological techniques incorporated in this digital technology such as adjusted keyboards, software to read the texts shown on the screen through a voice produced by the computer and the technology that enables the disabled to communicate through the computer by means of computers that work by eye movement, in addition to other developed devices by using a number of specialized software like Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote sensing (RS) and Digital Modeling (DM) and other data. The study indicated that the information and communication technology applications have significant impact pushing the disabled tourism development forward, and empowering the tourists of this category, starting from identifying the tourist sites and ending with remote booking. However, many Arab countries suffer from weak investment in the infrastructure of the information and communication technology related to the disabled category as this technology is only used as a promotional propaganda, and their tourist offers through their websites lack the modern software that help the disabled to communicate with tourist locations.

Jordan is a country rich with history, both modern and ancient, and its ancient past is best reflected by the thousands of archaeological sites peppered within its borders. Tourists travel from all over the world to visit Jordan and see its antiquities first-hand, contributing significantly to the ever-important Jordanian tourism industry. The interaction between tourism and archaeology is such that the two subjects share a department at the University of Jordan and a ministry in the Jordanian government. This study explores the political relationship between tourism and archaeology through the lens of Jordan’s largest tourist attraction, the ancient city of Petra. In particular, the study asks how archaeologists and tourism experts evaluate the management plans of Petra, whether these two groups find themselves in conflict or not, and whether the relationship between tourism and archaeology has squandered the many attempts at implementing a management plan at the Petra site. This study used both qualitative data in the form of interviews with academics, businesspeople, and government officials, and quantitative data in the form of a survey of faculty at the University of Jordan. The result revealed that respondents are split between those who think tourism and archaeology are destined to clash, and those who think that archaeology should adapt to the needs of tourism.

Abstract:
Aggressive heritage policies implemented by the state in the Peruvian highland town of Chinchero are severing the local population from their material past through processes of de-territorialization and displacement involved in the appropriation of archaeological spaces for tourism exploitation. This management is having an effect on local identity and how residents engage with their landscape. The landscape of the Inca ruins has traditionally been used in different ways and bears the traces of historical relationships, practices and events through which people have constructed a sense of place. Additionally, archaeological heritage management is changing how time is experienced in the landscape and showing how the process of ‘cleaning-up’ ruins to remove evidence of recent human activities and tidy up fallen stones can remove a sense of time and process for tourist visitors. These ethnographic observations are used to develop new ideas about how we can understand time and change in archaeological heritage sites.

Abstract:
The tourist potentials of the medieval fortresses in RN Macedonia as a medieval heritage in the context of cultural and historical tourism are often neglected, but the practice in other European and even in Balkan countries shows that this segment of history can be used at a very high level. The purpose of this paper is to explore the fortresses in order to enrich the tourist offer in RN. Macedonia. Archaeological excavations have identified about eighty medieval fortresses and other fortifications on the territory of the country. The mentioned fortified settlements appear in different time periods from prehistory, through antiquity to the Middle Ages. There is a generally accepted opinion that the formation of tourist cultural routes would lead to better protection and presentation of the cultural monument and their activation in use for tourist purposes. The formation of a new tourist product is a big step in the formation of an attractive tourist offer, and in this case it is the Macedonian medieval fortresses. In the framework of this paper, the research is aimed at a narrow selection of medieval fortresses that can offer attractive content to tourists. The analysis and evaluation uses known and recognized qualitative - quantitative and comparative research methods, procedures, criteria and activities for tourism valorization.
