Abstract:
The studies of the Russian and Scandinavian contacts in the Viking Age in the last decades are inseparably linked with the name of a prominent Swedish archaeologist Ingmar Jansson. His scientific works make a major contribution to the examination of the character and forms of interaction between the Slavs, the Finns, and the Scandinavians. His role in establishing contacts and then in organizing the joint work of Russian, Ukrainian, and Scandinavian archaeologists, in arranging exhibitions and conferences is invaluable.

The purpose of this work is to identify the main areas of research on the history of archaeology in Russia. We have identified such historiographical blocks as the personalities of archaeologists, the history of archaeological institutions, the study of individual periods and the history of archaeological science as a whole. A steady trend in recent years is the appeal of historiographers to archival materials, the expansion of the range of sources, which ultimately requires the formation of a new type of scientist as an archaeologist-historiographer.
