Abstract:
This article examines the representation of women and femininity in Archbishop William of Tyre's Chronicon. It considers how his text was shaped by contemporary Western ideas of gender, and how this impacted upon his presentation of women, especially Queen Melisende of Jerusalem and three Antiochene princesses, Alice, Constance and Sybil. It argues that, in doing so, we can raise important questions regarding his use for empirical reconstruction by revealing the nuanced ways in which, in pursuit of broader narrative goals, he utilised gender as a tool to both praise and discredit.

Conspicuous architecture. Medieval round churches in ScandinaviaThe aim of this article is partly to argue why round churches were built and partly to present an updated overview of Scandinavian round churches.Round churches (fig. 1) are often seen as something unusual, deviant and mysterious, and in need of special explanation. Thus the most recent overview for many of them, the influential Swedish dissertation Nordens befästa rundkyrkor – The fortified round churches of Scandinavia – by Hugo F. Frölén from 1910‑11, states (wrongly) that all round churches were fortified.Today (2014), 34 roun

Relations between the Sublime Porte and the Archbishopric of Ohrid in the 18th century (reasons for rapprochement and estrangement)Non-canonical abolition of the Ohrid Archbishopric on May 17, 1767 is an act that made deep impact in Macedonian history. The abolition of the Ohrid Archbishopric, conducted at the discretion of the Constantinople Patriarchate – is the key axis around which present denials of Macedonian Church revolve together with the denial of historical cultural tradition of Macedonian nation, Macedonian territories and Macedonian name. King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary (1458‒1490), son of the “Scourge of the Turks,” John Hunyadi, was a foremost patron of early Renaissance art. He was only fourteen years old in 1470 when he was elected king, and his patronage naturally took some time and maturity to develop, notably through his relations with the Neapolitan Aragon dynasty. In December 1476, he married Beatrice, daughter of Ferdinand of Aragon, who brought to Buda a love of books and music she had inherited from her grandfather, Alphonse of Aragon.I studied the work of Beatrice’s brother John of Aragon (Giovanni d’Aragona), pr

On 30 April and 1 May 1999, the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas in Rome (the Angelicum) hosted a Colloquium on the subject of the Comparative Law of Church Property, organised in collaboration with the Centre for Law and Religion at Cardiff Law School. It was attended by Anglican and Roman Catholic canonists and a representative of the Eastern Catholic Church. It is believed that this was the first meeting of its type since the Reformation and was a unique opportunity for canon lawyers to engage in ecumenical dialogue. The church dedicated to the Holy Wisdom, or the Divine Wisdom (Hagia Sophia in Greek), is located to the south-eastern part of the city of Thessaloniki (Northern Greece). It has served as the Metropolitan church of Thessaloniki and during the Latin occupation of the city (1204-1224), it became the Latin cathedral. The present building was built at the end of the 7th century, over the remains of a much larger five-aisled basilica dedicated to saint Mark, destroyed by the big earthquake of 620. Hagia Sophia is almost square in plan with a tripartite sanctuary projecting from its eastern end. It

The holy Kjeld was a dean from Viborg diocese. He died on 27. September 1150 and with papal permission he was later canonized by archbishop Absalon of Denmark in 1188. Two hagiographic texts are known about the holy Kjeld of Viborg, an older one and a younger one, although the younger one has gone widely unnoticed and very little has been written about it. A main reason that it has been largely forgotten is probably the fact that it was left out of both primary source editions of Danish medieval hagiography, as neither M. Cl.
