Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
This thesis deals with the connection between mythology and psychagogy, and a structured way of reading and using myth for personal development is suggested. The myth of Demeter and Persephone is used for this purpose, and the text of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter is analysed as the basic (but not exclusive) text. In the modern world the psychagogic component relies on the work of Jung, which is seen as the most appropriate template available. His concept of the archetype is particularly useful, and the archetype of the mother goddess is analysed as a representation of the personal and spiritual development of modern women.

Wilt, Brian David. "Geofon Deathe Hweop| Poetic Sea Imagery as Anglo-Saxon Cultural Archetype." Thesis, Truman State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1564553.

Full text
Abstract:

The oceans and seas play a fascinating role in human culture and literature. This thesis examines the sea imagery in several Anglo-Saxon poems in order to gain a deeper understanding of the function the sea plays in the Anglo-Saxon literary psyche. These texts include Beowulf, Andreas, Exodus, as well as the shorter "Seafarer" and "Whale" poems. The first part of this thesis focuses on sea imagery at the word level, analyzing Anglo-Saxon morphology and lexical compounding as a key to the metaphorical content of sea-kennings. The second part expands this focus to a textual level, examining the symbolism of sea imagery in Anglo-Saxon literature as an anthropomorphic will-power, a habitat of the monstrous, and a place of heroic action. Finally, the last part will argue for an underlying cultural archetype of the sea, based on parallel passages and common themes involving the sea in Anglo-Saxon poetry.

You, Xiao. "Archetype and archetypal image in Chinese myths, legends and tales." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/23484/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to examine Chinese myths, legends and tales from the perspective of analytical psychology. Considering that analytical psychologists have paid little attention to Chinese myths and that previous studies on Chinese myths from the standpoint of analytical psychology are lacking, this thesis investigates the universal archetype and its cultural carrier, or archetypal image, in Chinese mythical texts. First, this study examines both Jung’s engagement with Chinese culture, in order to see the function and significance of Chinese thought in analytical psychology, and the reception of Jungian thought in China, in order to demonstrate the lack of research on Chinese myths from the perspective of the theory of analytical psychology. Second, the study defines the concepts of archetype and archetypal image, and adopts the method of myth analysis from Jung and his followers to interpret Chinese motifs and symbols. Third, interpretations from the perspective of analytical psychology are applied to three motifs in Chinese culture: creation myths, flood myths and erotic anima figures. These provide materials for exploring similarities and differences in the mechanism and development of the human psyche between East and West. Fourth, this research concentrates on discussing two important Chinese symbols – Long (dragon) and Qi lin (unicorn) and their counterparts in western culture – by analysing these symbols at both the archetypal and cultural levels. The final part of this study explores the possible therapeutic value of Chinese myths in helping analysts to comprehend the human psyche and analysands to understand themselves in greater depth. This thesis fills a gap in the understanding of Chinese myth by means of Jungian psychology with the hope also of applying analytical psychology to Chinese culture more thoroughly and insightfully in both theoretical and practical contexts.

Abstract:

Ritualized initiations are explored as having an important role in the breakdown of ego that is necessary for the growth and integration of components of the self once hidden in the shadows of the unconscious. In the modern world, the drive for linear growth and financial conquest has broken connection to archetypal, spiritual, and mythical guidance as well as to the numinous experiences that allow transformation. Through heuristic methodology, both depth psychological literature as well as broader media are considered to determine the importance of initiation for psychic growth and how a lost connection affects recent generations. This work shows that through the psychotherapeutic process, the therapist can provide the stage needed for a client in a transitional phase of life to safely break down and rebuild the ego structure necessary to move toward individuation.

Bodisch, Anja Maria. "Tracking spoor of the wild woman archetype during a university merger." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/477.

Full text
Abstract:
Universities in South Africa are currently undergoing mergers. Intended for commercial gain, mergers rarely accommodate the psychological milieu of staff. Similarly, the majority of studies conducted with respect to university mergers adopt a quantitative approach. This study adopts a qualitative approach and locates the researcher within the epicentre of the research, using a case study, with the researcher as unit of analysis. The lack of merger studies that focus on the experiences of minority groups, including women, prompted me, as researcher, to adopt a feminist approach to conduct this study in the context of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University merger. A Jungian gendered view, which endorses the personal experiences of minority groups, explored the connection between organisational change and concomitant opportunities for psychic growth. The primary purpose of this study was to explore the presence of the Wild Woman archetype during a university merger. The data that made up this study were contained in my field notes, research journal and a wall montage. An analysis of the qualitative data and a comparison of Jung’s archetypal theory and Pinkola Estés’ theory of the Wild Woman archetype, enabled the researcher to find evidence of the presence of the Wild Woman archetype during the university merger. The secondary purpose of the study was to document the findings which could act as a spoor which other women could follow on their journey towards connecting with their own Wild Woman archetype. The limitations of this study, and recommendations for future research are also offered.

Laubser, Liza-Marie. "La femme fatale : une reconsideration d'un archetype negatif." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71718.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The stereotypical figure of the femme fatale as irresistible seductress, who inevitably brings about death, is well known. This figure is nevertheless strangely absent from Afrikaans literature. This is what makes the appearance of the character of Nicolette in André Brink’s novel, The Ambassador (1963), so remarkable. Not only is she a complex femme fatale, she also adds a new dimension to the cliché. The striking similarities between Nicolette and Kathe, the female protagonist in Henri-Pierre Roché’s novel Jules et Jim (1953), justify a comparative study between these two novels. Although both of them bring about death, it seems that the presence of these femme fatale characters has positive rather than negative consequences. Contrary to the stereotypical evil temptress, Nicolette and Kathe are more natural, spontaneous and unpredictable – apparently free from the constricting qualities of the bloodthirsty femme fatale. In this comparative study, the image of the femme fatale is investigated through the close examination of its role and function in Jules et Jim and The Ambassador. By examining the philosopher René Girard’s theories on mimetic desire, violence and sacrifice as well as Georges Bataille’s ideas on eroticism and death, the nature of the femme fatale in these two novels is analysed in order to determine to what extent the image of the femme fatale as negative archetype could be reconsidered.

Faber, Phillip A. "An experimental and qualitative investigation of the relationship between archetypal imagery in waking fantasies and nocturnal dreams." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15864.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 388-416.
In On the Nature of the Psyche (1946), Jung proffers what is probably his most systematic and articulate formulation of the theory of archetypes. A pivotal role is ascribed to his clinical observations of the interrelationships between waking and nocturnal fantasy in the genesis of the theory. Fantasy-activity is conceptualised as constituting the medium par excellence through which archetypal activity is apprehended and experienced. In providing an empirical basis for archetypal theory, Jung cites his clinical observations of a decrease in the frequency of occurrence of dream material of an archetypal nature in association with the practice of the therapeutic method of Active Imagination. This method, which he characterised as a form of "visionary meditation", involves the experience of archetypal activity in the waking state. When employed with patients who exhibit an increased frequency and intensity of archetypal dream material, it functions as an avenue of discharge for, or expression of, the dream material, with the result that it decreases in frequency and intensity in sleep. On the other hand, Jung also asserted that the experience of archetypal material in the waking state could result in a general activation or "constellation" of the unconscious, with the result that the Individuation process is stimulated, facilitated or accelerated. This intensified unconscious activity is invariably manifested in an increased frequency of archetypal dream material. The present investigation subjects hypotheses derived from these two mutually exclusive sets of observations to experimental investigation using hypothetico-deductive and qualitative methodology. Thirteen experimental subjects were matched with a control group on age, sex, socio-economic and marital status. Both groups recorded their nocturnal dreams in standardised diaries for a period of 63 days, divided into the Pre-Experimental (21 days), Experimental (21 days) and Post-Experimental (21 days) phases. During the Experimental phase, extended sequences of waking fantasy were induced in the Experimental subjects for a total of six sessions. The archetypal content of the dreams of both groups was then measured and compared. There was a highly significant increase in archetypal content in the dreams of the Experimental group during the Experimental phase. No such changes were evident in the dreams of the Control group. The archetypal material in the waking fantasies and dreams of the Experimental group was then analyzed for structural and thematic continuities using the Jungian method of amplification, which yielded a complex matrix of anticipatory and retrospective connections. The results are discussed in relation to the support they provide for Jungian theory and their relevance to experimental research on the relationship between fantasy-activity in waking and sleeping states.

Full text
Abstract:

Archetypal psychology relativized the notion of ego and brought the notion of psyche as soul to the fore by highlighting Soul’s distinction from Spirit. Psychotherapy became a soul-making process, but Soul’s longing for union with Spirit and the ego’s longing for relationship with the Self was neglected. Using alchemical hermeneutics, this thesis investigates the bringing into consciousness of the repressed Spirit in depth psychology by reviewing literature in the broader field of psychotherapy and the personal experience of the writer that points to a love relationship between the opposites of Soul and Spirit, ego and Self. This thesis also puts forth a call for action within post-Jungian thinking toward an awareness of the dynamically poetic tension of opposites, and posits that the divine archetype of the Opposites is the primary animator of the production of the human mind, reintroducing Jung’s archetype of the transpersonal Self in a more relational manner.

Curra, Audrey D. "Body and Dream| Authentic Movement and Dream Work Evoking the Great Mother Archetype Within Psyche." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10076219.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis examines the use of two depth psychological techniques, somatic active imagination, known as authentic movement, and dream work in aiding a woman to embody elements of the Great Mother archetype within her psyche. These techniques act to unearth unconscious material, providing access to archetypal symbology. They help identify and explore the boundless archetypal content within, drawing it from the unconscious into consciousness for psychic integration. Dreams and authentic movement sessions are used to demonstrate how one might assist a woman in developing an embodied relationship with the Great Mother archetype and the archetypal Feminine as it exhibits within her psyche. The process is analyzed from a Jungian perspective and uses a heuristic methodology, contemplating the Great Mother archetype as an avenue for psychic transformation.

Chalk, Beryl. "Empowered narratives : drama praxis and the archetype as a means to authentic voice for women." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1997. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/897.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contests the status of gender as a social construct by considering how women develop a personal ethnography when engaging in drama and expressive arts practices. There is no known research on drama praxis as a signifier to Australian women's identity, a major focus of this work will be, 'Who has the authority over women's expression and means of expression? Who has the authority to interpret the experience? Who has authority over other people's experience?' This thesis addresses the internalised- oppression which refers to the process by which women internalise the 'fictionalised' reality prescribed to them as women marked by the binary construct of gender duality, i.e., male/female, in which the male as the ascendant partner in the duality has the power to mark those on the descendant as 'other' to the norm. The limits of 'knowing' only through positivist science will be extended into multi modes of knowing and within the drama praxis the reflective processes enabled by personal engagement will be investigated within the personal, universal and analogous modes. This thesis, being written from a postructuralist perspective, is a means of giving the study group authentic voice. It proceeds from an explicit framework engaging archetype as a means to modify consciousness and is an invitation: a "call to action".

Abstract:
The case study method was used to trace the therapeutic process of a 23 year old woman, over a period of 12 sessions. The focus of the study was her issue with abandonment which emerged as the central theme in therapy. Hillman's archetypal approach was used as a framework in understanding the process and resolution of her feelings of abandonment. According to Hillman, the therapy process activates the archetypal abandoned child. For a successful therapeutic outcome the process of de-literalisation must occur in order for the patient to move from literal acting out to symbolic containment. Core moments in the therapeutic process were used, together with an interpretation from Hillman's approach, to illustrate the various themes around the issue of abandonment. The present case study illustrates how the theory in area was relevant in practice with this particular case.

Abstract:

The purpose of this essay is to analyze Tolkien’s work The Hobbit since this has not been done to the same extent as the Lord of the Rings. The aim of this essay is see if the hobbit Bilbo is a hero and if so in what way. The questions I aim to answer in this essay are:

• Why does the main character leave his home?

• What creatures does the hero encounter on his journey and how does he defeat these?

• In what ways is Bilbo a hero?

• How does Tolkien narrate The Hobbit?

To answer these questions I have used Jung’s archetype theory which is useful when comparing different works and looking for similarities. I have partly used the approach of psychoanalysis as well, where knowledge of the author is important when interpreting the work.

The reason the main character, Bilbo, leaves his home is part curiosity and part that he is forced by others to go. On his journey he encounters many different creatures including trolls, goblins, the creature Gollum, spiders, wood-elves and the dragon Smaug. Bilbo uses his wits and bravery to survive the different creatures he meets. Bilbo is a hero in that, even though he may not have what is usually characteristic for a hero, he tries his best and many times acts first and thinks later to save his friends. Through the encounters in the world, the main character Bilbo develops into a hero. The author mostly uses the view of a third-person narrative, but sometimes intrudes and turns directly to the reader. The work shares narrative features with how oral narratives are told, and the narrator is omniscient. In his work, you can trace older stories and traditions which the author was very familiar with.

s use of these archetypal motifs to reinforce his black philosophy will be illustrated and exemplified in the study.

Abstract:

As consciousness develops out of the unconscious, according to Jungian analyst Erich Neumann, it passes through necessary phases, both in the individual and on the collective level. Part of this process is demonizing that which was formerly unconscious, represented in myth and dreams as the archetypal Terrible Mother. In Mexico and the American Southwest, mythological representations of this archetype appear in the ghost story of La Llorona and the mythic historical figure of La Malinche. These myths are examined to show the emergence of consciousness of personal and systemic oppression. The tension that arises from this new level of consciousness gives way to what Carl G. Jung termed the transcendent function, a new paradigm of cultural consciousness beyond oppressor and oppressed. Using hermeneutic methodology, this research additionally explores the transcendent function and active imagination along with liberation psychology’s notion of liberation arts to facilitate healing from personal and systemic oppression.

Archetypical theories are posited as useful because they help us understand universal aspects of human behavior; however, empirical research demonstrating archetypical thinking and behavior remains rare. Accordingly, this phenomenological study investigated whether a leadership archetype exists as a shared cognitive template and if so, what characteristics define it. The theoretical framework used to examine the phenomenon of leadership combined leadership theory, philosophy of the mind, Jungian psychology, social constructionist theory, and neuro-linguistic programming. Data were collected in semi-structured interviews from a convenience sample of 10 Midwestern subjects belonging to professional and social organizations and having an expressed interest in leadership. Interviews were coded and sequentially analyzed using a semiotic--phenomenological method that included thematic descriptions, reduction, and interpretation. Results failed to identify an archetypical view of a leader, but identified choice and attribution as key elements in selecting leaders and accepting their leadership. These findings suggested an explanation of leadership as a group consensus that emerges through a dynamic process rather than solely from leader behavior. Implications for positive social change result from the study's contribution toward further understanding of the psychology of leader selection and follower behavior. Given the multiplicity of existing leadership models, the insights gained from this research contribute to the scholarly literature highlighting group-dynamic influences and can lead to improvements in leadership training and leadership development outcomes.

Abstract:
This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of the movie Easy Rider. It explores how auteurs Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern's use of road, regional, and cowboy mythology creates a text that simultaneously exposes and is dominated by the ironies inherent in American culture and breathes new life into the cowboy myth, reaffirming the cowboy's place as one of America's most enduring cultural icons.

Abstract:
Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung describes the encounter with the archetype of the shadow as the initial step to be taken by any individual seeking to initiate the individuation process. Jung observes a close relationship between this process and religion, suggesting that a psychologically beneficial religion can help guide the subject through individuation. Yet Jung finds few existing religious traditions that satisfy his criteria. Wicca, a neopagan religion popular in Europe and North America, presents itself at times as consciously psychological, striving to lead the practitioner to a goal of self-transformation, yielding a product that strangely resembles the individuated person. The objective therefore becomes not to criticize Wiccan religious claims, nor to deconstruct Jungian philosophy, but to identify the points of intersection between Wiccan theology/theology and Jungian psychology of religion, with a particular emphasis on the archetype of the shadow.

Abstract:
What do you get if you apply Ken Wilber’s theories of transpersonal psychological development within human consciousness to William Golding’s Lord of the Flies or Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, or Shakespeare’s Hamlet? Can they provide a clear interpretative tool in order to uncover the intentional or unintentional aspects of consciousness development contained within them? Do these literary texts reveal a coherent quest for knowledge of human consciousness, the nature of good and evil, and the ineffable question of spirit? Is there a case for presenting a transpersonal perspective of literature in order to expound the theories of this psychological discipline? Can literary texts provide materials that are unique to that art form and can be explicated by knowledge of transpersonal psychology? Is there an evolutionary motion, which is not necessarily historically chronological but nonetheless displays a developmental map of human consciousness across literary works? In other words, can we see a hierarchical framework along the lines of consciousness development as proposed by Ken Wilber, that suggests a movement up the evolutionary ladder of consciousness from Lord of the Flies to Hamlet and beyond? Can we counter oppose Lord of the Flies and Hamlet, suggesting that the first is a fable of regression to transpersonal evil within a cultural community and the second sees Hamlet attempt to avoid this path in order to move toward the transcendence of ego and self, within the individual? If this is so then we should be able to plot both paths relative to the models of development traced in Wilber’s theories and interpret the texts according to this framework. What is the relationship between transpersonal aspects of consciousness and literature? And what are the effects upon the cultural consciousness of human evolution that literature has had so much to inform? How do the literary works of individuals inform the cultural consciousness and transcend the age in which they are written? Equally we should be able to test the theories with the aid of some texts of literature – especially those works which are of, and about consciousness. What does this mean to the literary interpretation of these texts? How does it differ from other interpretations? What are the pitfalls and what disclaimers need to be put in place? Is the difference between the notion of a transpersonal evil and a transpersonal good simply a matter of individual moral choice?

Motivated by the lack of scholarship surrounding female characters in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, I sought to examine the distinct identities of four female characters. The collapse of dualities and embodiment of hybridity in Ursula, Pilar Ternera, Amaranta, and the Remedios women reveals the hegemonic power structures that are disrupted by these empowered women. The exploration of these women and their relationships to gendered dichotomies points to the potential of their identities in enacting colonial resistance and reclaiming traditional cultural heritage.

Abstract:
Consultation is a prominent indirect service delivery method in school psychology today. Several publications endorsed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) have traditionally suggested the mental health, organizational, and behavioral models of consultation as the three prominent consultation models in the field of school psychology. However, no supporting data are cited and it is unclear if these three models are still prominent in school psychology today. The present research examined the consultation literature over the last 22 years in two prominent school psychology journals, Journal of School Psychology and School Psychology Quarterly (originally called Professional School Psychology). This research involved the analysis of 145 consultation articles from the school psychology literature. The data was analyzed to obtain information regarding the frequency of consultation articles published, any trend that emerged from this data, the most frequent types of consultation mentioned, the type of research conducted, and topics addressed in the articles. Analysis of consultation trends over time indicated a decrease in the frequency of consultation articles published over time in both journals. The terms utilized to address consultation models are greatly varied, demonstrated by the 107 different types of consultation referenced in the consultation articles. Clearly, behavioral consultation is the most frequently researched and referenced consultation model in the literature. The results suggested the three traditional prominent models have been modified over time. Mental health consultation and behavioral consultation were consistently found within the top three models researched and referenced; however, organizational consultation was infrequently mentioned in the literature and researched in only 4% of the articles reviewed for this study. Therefore, it appeared that organizational consultation is no longer considered a prominent model of consultation. Analysis of the articles that were not research oriented indicated that 76% of the articles focused on application of consultation. The topics of multiculturalism, training, and ethics were the focal point to a lesser extent, with each representing fewer than 5% of articles. Research focused articles that involved aspects of both questionnaire and intervention research tools were employed more frequently than were research involving only questionnaire research or intervention research. Implications for the present findings and future directions for consultation research are discussed.

Abstract:
In this work we will be comparing two feminine characters (Iseult and Vis) from several medieval stories: the romances of Tristan and the romance of Vis and Ramin. These characters will be analyzed using Jungian theory about archetypes and Collective Unconscious. Our basic premise considers that the same archetypal principle drives the two characters: The Archetypal Feminine. We know that the characters of Iseult and Vis belong to stories whose origins are mythological: Celtic origins for the heroine of Tristan romances and Persian origins for the heroine of Gorgani’s romance. Based on this, one can see how the drawing up of these two characters owes much to other mythical images of Femininity and Woman, in the cultural and mythological context of each literary work. What do we truly know and understand about the heroines of these important stories? What do we truly know and understand about their function and their role in the plot of these romances? This work holds two objectives related to these questions. One, to trace the drawing up of the characters from mythology to literature. The other, to identify the echoes of folktales and traditional literature which resonate in these stories even today. Analyzing these two characters as symbols of the same archetype, can allow us to compare the dynamic of the Archetypal Feminine into these literary works, and to identify their narrative function in the two different outcomes of the stories. Iseult and Vis would be then the crystallizations of a collective image about Woman and Femininity. They appeared in two different cultures, at the same moment of history: The Middle Ages

In 1927, James Weldon Johnson published God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, a book of poems based on sermons heard in the African American Church. There are eight accompanying illustrations by Aaron Douglas. These images visually interpret the subject matter of the poems in a style that blends Cubism, Orphism, and Art Deco. Douglas depicted all the figures in these images, human and supernatural, in the form of shadow silhouettes, a stylistic practice he continued throughout his artistic career. The shadow is an ancient archetype in human mythology and psychology. This thesis looks at the depiction of shadows in a Jungian context. I explore the possibility that the use of the shadow allows deeper communication between the audience and the image by accessing the collective unconscious. I also examine the shadow as a metaphor for the socio-political oppression of African Americans rampant in the period between the wars.

Abstract: This work is a qualitative study based on phenomenology and its objective was to investigate if the mental images that rise from listening sacred or liturgical music of different cultures, after applying calatonia (feet relaxing) in atheist people, bring contents or religious matters. The music were chosen based on the most practiced religions in Brazil, IBGE, 2000.The sample is intentional and closed by the saturation criteria, composed by six atheists, adults, voluntary of both genders, 28 to 65 years old, productive age according to IBGE data, 2000, included belonging to high medium social class, with Universitary Courses. These six individuals, after music listening, made a drawing representing the experience with the music and afterwards they answered a semi-structured interview which was recorded and noted by the researcher, because mental images may appear or not drawn. The drawings and the answers of the interviews and spontaneous speaking were analyzed and interpreted at an approaching analytic psychology proposed by psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, by two specialists. It was possible to realize that the application of this procedure promoted relaxing, tranquility and appeasement, facilitating "conscience alterated state", not in the medical sense, but a necessary and sufficient relaxing in order to happen a creative dialogue between ego and Self. Religiosity, in this study, is the connection Ego-Self, that is the conscience dialoguing with Whole significative, to experience an ego connection with things that the individual understands greater than himself. It's the nexus with deity, with the Self. The following aspects were considered from the application of this procedure: 1) It facilitated the appearance of mental images and most of the times, they brought contents or religious matters such as: temple buildings, churches, praying gestures, Nature elements like sun, desert, fire, present in several religions representing simultaneously a deity, deity dwelling or the own deity, among others; 2) The six individuals expressed in all the sessions the feeling of relaxing mentioned above, even when the listening of the music seemed them disagreeable; 3) All the mantras promoted the emergency of mental images with religious contents, either in the titles, or in the words, or interview, or in the drawings, aligned with recent studies that show that it isn't necessary to understand the words for being affected. 4) At the end of the process, these five individuals commented they appreciated the procedure frame, the five sessions, the listening of music in each one of them after calatonia. All individuals recognized, that in spite of music was not always agreeable, the fact of calatonia preparing them to a deeper listening helped them to accept it, even when they didn't like the music; 5) Another significative consideration of the research, was to know about prejudice still valid in declaring themselves atheist. Despite being and an introductory work, data research and having been applied in few atheists, the outcomes obtained lead us to consider the proposal of continuing the research and amplifying this study and depending on the results, put the procedure at work

Abstract:

Chronic pain is a prevalent disorder that is difficult to treat and has the potential to be stigmatizing for individuals with chronic pain. An exploratory literature review was conducted to examine chronic pain stigma. The review specifically investigated studies that addressed individuals’ experiences of chronic pain stigma, identified sources of chronic pain stigma, and chronic pain stigma’s impact on treatment adherence. The following key terms were used to search 15 computerized databases (i.e. chronic pain AND stigma OR stigmatization OR disbelief OR stereotype OR invisible OR misconception). Studies were reviewed if they were relevant to chronic pain stigma, were conducted in the United States, the majority of participants were adults with a chronic pain condition, chronic pain condition was non-malignant, chronic pain was defined as persistent or intermittent for at least 3 months, and stigma was defined as being labeled, stereotyped, devalued, or discredited. The final review included 18 qualitative and quantitative studies from 1989-2015 that examined chronic pain and stigma. The findings of the study included twelve key themes that shed light on the experiences of stigma, sources of stigma, and impact on treatment adherence. Experiences of stigma included: estrangement, self-stigmatization, invisibility, medication stigma, and disbelief. The participants in the studies identified three sources of stigma: doctors, public, and family. Four themes emerged from the few studies that addressed treatment adherence: difficulty communicating about pain, management strategies, to seek care or not seek care, and to not take medications due to fears of addiction and stigma. The findings are further discussed in relation to the United State’s societal values, beliefs, and culture. A cultural shift is suggested in how we view chronic pain and illness. Additionally, recommendations are made for the role of psychologists addressing chronic pain stigma from a multi-systems level approach. Keywords: Chronic pain, stigma, disbelief, diagnostic uncertainty, illegitimacy

Abstract:
Personality disorders offer clinicians a unique diagnostic challenge. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between literature size and diagnostic accuracy for personality disorders. The data used in this study were taken from the Blashfield & Intoccia (2000) and Blashfield & Herkov (1996) studies. The data were analyzed using a combination of correlations and single subject experimental designs. The results indicated that from 1980 to 1987 as literature size increased diagnostic accuracy increased across personality disorders. When examining literature growth three personality disorders (borderline, schizotypal, antisocial) appear to be carrying the literature growth for the group. These three personality disorders have a top five diagnostic accuracy rating. Possible explanations for this relationship as well as implications for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
My studies consider the genre of children's literature, specifically picture books, and their treatment of the topic of diabetes. I frame my argument with an examination of diabetes, the psychological effects of diabetes on the child, the need of thorough education about diabetes. I argue for the use of the picture book as an effect tool in educating and socializing the diabetic child. I first explore the implications of diabetes and the long term complications caused by one's poor control of the disease. I then explore the psychological ramifications of a chronic illness on the young child. Next I assert the need to combine the physiological and psychological factors of diabetes into a responsible text for children, one which both serves as an educating tool and a source of comfort in difficult times with the disease. I conclude my studies with critiques of existing materials in the limited genre and compare them to the story I have written for children about diabetes.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Maternal filicide, the murder of a child by its mother, is a complex phenomenon with various causes and characteristics. Research, by means of the development of several classification systems and in identifying particular risk factors, has been conducted with the aim of better prevention of this emotionally evocative crime. Various disciplines have offered a wide range of perspectives on why women kill their biological children. These are intended to yield a better understanding of the aetiology of this crime. This literature review delineates three dominant perspectives: psychiatric, psychological, and sociological. The main findings of each perspective are discussed. However, these three perspectives frequently operate in conjunction with each other in that both intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics play a role in acts of maternal filicide. The most vulnerable women appear to be those who have had a severely deficient developmental history (trauma and/or grossly inadequate parenting), those who experience current difficult psychosocial circumstances, and those who have been diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. However, not all women who experience such problems kill their children. In this regard, individual differences have an important role to play and more carefully delineated future research is suggested. One of the most significant findings of this literature review is that there appears to be a paucity of systematic research on the South African phenomenon of parental child homicide.

Abstract:
As a multi-dimensional concept, empathy suffers from vague and inconsistent definitions which makes it difficult to compare results between studies and advance knowledge about empathic abilities and experiences. Most commonly, empathy involves an aspect of cognition, emotional sharing, and distinction between the self and the other. The Late positive potential (LPP) is an emotion-sensitive event-related potential (ERP) that is increasingly used to study empathic abilities. As one of the later components it has shown robust sensitivity to emotional stimuli compared to neutral and is often associated with cognitive processing of emotions. In this review, a total of n = 30 ERP studies was investigated in order to investigate how the concept of empathy is studied in terms of conceptual definition, task operationalisation, and relation to the LPP. Results in the studies mainly confirm the emotion effect on LPP and a tendency for enhanced LPP in conditions of self-focus. Conceptualisations of empathy are multifaceted and the LPP is predominantly interpreted as a marker for cognitive processing of emotional content in empathic responding. However, there is still no clear picture about the specifics of these underlying cognitive modulations.

Abstract:
The best selling literature on relationships is written in terms of gender differences. Information and advice from psychologists and counselors is directed to either females or males based on counseling clients and personal experience. In this study, I present evidence that a gender list of attitudes and needs without age considerations cannot provide accurate information. This study included a sample of 1020 volunteers from a randomized group of individuals attending jury duty in Pima County, Arizona. The participants answered a questionnaire consisting of 44 items developed from four authors' best selling books on information and advice on relationships. The participant responses were evaluated in terms of three factors: gender, attendance in counseling, and age. Phi coefficients were calculated for the gender and counseling factors. Eta coefficients were calculated for females and males across four age groups. Meaningful results were determined by Cohen's criteria of effect size. Item responses were compared with expectations from the literature. The results indicate gender and age are necessary to accurately determine relationship attitudes and needs. The factors of gender and age provided specific information for females and males across age groups unavailable with dichotomous gender designations. The counseling sample did not respond consistently when compared to the non-counseling sample on items relating to counseling subjects. A comparison of item responses to the literature suggests participants did not respond to items consistently with information and advice in current self-help literature.
