Abstract:
AbstractWhat is the place of imagination in archaeology? This paper works with a set of materials from the deep archive of the South African archaeologist John Goodwin (1900–59) to explore the relationship between archaeology and imagination. The first half of the paper focuses on a short story written by Goodwin, describing the accidental creation and subsequent ‘uncreation’ of an indigenous person of the Cape (described in the story as a ‘Hottentot’) by the gods on Olympus. The second half of the paper describes two encounters in life between Goodwin and indigenous people of the Cape (the first with the so-called ‘Tweerivieren Bushmen’, exhibited in life at the Empire Exhibition of 1936; the second with the human remains from Oakhurst Cave). Encounters in life, in death and in imagination, the terms of these three episodes double and repeat one another in the different forms of writing to which they give rise (the imagined world of the short story, and the ‘bare description’ of Goodwin's archaeological texts). At the centre of each is the haunted figure of the ‘Bushman’/‘Hottentot’, a being whose status is figured as a kind of ‘death-in-life’. In my telling, forms of actual and epistemic violence are never far from these events. Looking, showing and telling are described as activities which range across a set of characteristic sites: the body, the archive and the grave. In so doing, they summon their counterparts, the categories of the unspeakable and the untellable.

Abstract:
When the Transforming Tindale exhibition opened at the State Library of Queensland in September 2012, there was much excitement and goodwill. This landmark exhibition was curated by Michael Aird and featured Ah Kee’s drawings and enlarged prints of anthropologist Norman Tindale’s photographs of 1938-1940, as well as extensive archival information and stories from the subjects themselves and their relatives. The transformations of the exhibition’s title refer to the way Tindale’s ‘data’ was given both new physical form, as well as engendering and renewing social meanings. Scholars such as Elizabeth Edwards have argued that we should explore the materiality of images and the diverse forms they assume, attending to the ways their form and vitality shape us as much as we imbue them with meaning. Digitisation constitutes a major transformation of photographs’ historical accumulation of materiality. It also enables the return of historical archives from European museums to Indigenous relatives in Australia. In this article I explore the relations and narratives that emerge from this process, focusing on their Indigenous significance, and using the example of an enigmatic cardboard panel held by the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford on which are mounted thirteen photographs from South Australia. For Indigenous descendants of the people recorded in these photographs, their physical form is less important than the way they embody missing relatives, lost through invasion and assimilation. This process is slow and often awkward, but the rewards are great, in challenging foundational national histories, re-connecting family networks, and telling the truth of Indigenous experience.

A Review of: Gooding, P. (2016). Exploring the information behaviour of users of Welsh Newspapers Online through web log analysis. Journal of Documentation, 72(2), 232-246. doi:10.1108/JD-10-2014-0149 Objective – This study has two specific objectives: to learn about the behaviours of visitors to the Welsh Newspapers Online (WNO) website, and to explore how the identified behaviours are different from those common to information-seeking in a physical archive. Design – Analysis of Google Analytics and web server content logs. Setting – Welsh Newspapers Online website: http://newspapers.library.wales Subjects – WNO had 19,805 unique visitors from 12 March 2013 to 30 June 2013, who made 52,767 visits to the site. Methods – Gooding accessed the WNO Google Analytics account, which provided visitor numbers, user engagement by page visit and visit duration, bounce rate, and mobile and social media usage. Using anonymized processed content logs provided by the National Library of Wales, he then explored searches undertaken by users on the website; instances where users browsed, filtered, or otherwise interacted with search results; and instances where users viewed content. Main Results – Google Analytics statistics showed users of WNO demonstrate behaviour that is “deeper and more sustained than general web browsing” (p. 237). The number of visitors who only viewed one page and then left the site (bounce rate) was low, while page views and time spent on the site were higher than considered standard on general websites. Mobile users made up 11% of visits, although on average they viewed fewer pages and stayed for less time than non-mobile users. Screen size was directly correlated to the level of engagement. There were 9% of visitors referred via social media, but generally showed a low engagement rate similar to that of mobile users; the exception was users who were directed to WNO via blogging platforms. Web log analysis showed visitors most frequently accessed newspapers from the 1840s and 1850s. They viewed the title page much more frequently than any other page in the newspapers, likely reflecting that the title page is default when users access a paper via browsing. A correlation between time spent on the site and searching versus engaging with content was found: the longer a visitor was on WNO, the less time they spent searching, and the more time spent engaging with content. Still, as Gooding reports, “over half of all pageviews are dedicated to interacting with the web interface rather than the historical sources” (p. 240). Conclusion – WNO visitors spend more of their time interacting with the site’s interface than with digitized content, making it important that interface design be a high priority when designing online archives. Gooding concludes that despite a focus on interface, visitors are still engaged in a research process similar to that found in an offline archive and that “a differently remediated experience is not necessarily any less rich” (p. 242).

Abstract:
- Quine and Tarski were kindred philosophical spirits. They rejected the analytic/synthetic distinction and shared a strong distaste for modal notions. Moreover, they both had nominalistic leanings. In this article I trace the nominalistic engagement of these two giants of contemporary analytic philosophy. Using recently discovered material from the Quine archive at Harvard, I begin by describing Quine's engagement with nominalism up to 1940. I then summarize the impact of the 1940-1941 discussions on nominalism between Carnap, Quine and Tarski and mention their influence on Goodman. The third part of the article deals with Quine's allegiance to nominalism and his subsequent reluctant acceptance of Platonism. The fourth part focuses on Tarski's defence of nominalism in Amersfoort in 1953. In the conclusion, Quine's and Tarski's approaches to nominalism are compared with some contemporary nominalistic programs (Field, Hellman, etc.).

Abstract:
The evolutionary struggle between the printed page, CD-ROM, online services and the Internet as media for publishing has huge implications for the national archive. Authors, publishers and the libraries that have current responsibility for the UK national legal deposit collection all have a consuming interest in the outcome of the government's Consultation Paper on legal deposit. Publishers want the least onerous extension of the law to new and particularly to electronic formats, which some see as an opportunity to reduce the statutory six copies for deposit. The copyright libraries see their status possibly being affected, whilst universities see a new and important role for themselves in electronic archiving. The government has stipulated a solution at minimum cost to the industries involved, and if the publishing industry successfully lobbies for a reduction in the number of deposit copies, the national libraries will probably have the strongest case for retaining their privileges. Similar tensions arise over access to information content and its use in electronic form, especially transmission and reproduction, tensions that are already present in the British Library's service provision and its alleged impact on publishers' sales. The concept of ‘fair dealing’ will clearly have to be redefined. These and other important issues are now being aired, perhaps with more goodwill and trust than 20 years ago, between the British Library, some leading publishers, and the Publishers Association. Extension of the national archive to electronic and multimedia works will be a huge project requiring significant new funding. Indications for the future are greater selectivity, a reduction in the number of copies required, and a more streamlined administrative process. A comprehensive archive is unlikely to be achieved other than by statutory means.

Abstract:
The article introduces into scientific circulation official documents dated 1853‒1855, preserved in the State Archive of the Tomsk region and recreating the last months of the life of Alexander Ivanovich Isaev — a friend of F. M. Dostoevsky in Semipalatinsk, the first husband of Maria Dmitrievna Constant (Isaeva, Dostoevskaya). These documents include: A. I. Isaev's certificate of service, issued on September 27, 1853, and 6 reports and 12 official letters dated February‒November 1855. Until recently, the corpus of biographical literature about Dostoevsky offered an image of A. I. Isaev as a bitter drunkard, a weak-willed man who ruined his career and life and left his family in poverty. Materials of the State Archive of the Tomsk region contain positive characteristics of Isaev and confirm his professional achievements and career growth from 1840 to July 28, 1853, the day of his dismissal. These archival materials reveal an important fact — the official reason for his dismissal from service. It was not Isaev's alcoholism, exaggerated in the works of Dostoevsky's biographers, but a deadly disease, namely, consumption (tuberculosis). This fact explains the words of Dostoevsky in a letter to Baron A. E. Wrangel dated August 14, 1855. about Isaev’s “dark fate”, the writer's unwavering respect and goodwill towards him, as well as the desire to raise his son Pavel as if he was Dostoevsky’s own. Archival materials demonstrate that immediately after the Isaev's death on August 4 (16), 1855, many persons applied for his position as a tavern assessor in the Kuznetsk Zemsky court, but relinquished it soon after starting the job.

This article analyzes Ivan Dmitrievich Krasilnikov’s letter to the Social Democrat Konstantin Andreevich Popov (1876–1949) in Omsk on the eve of revolutionary events in 1917. In this letter, Krasilnikov offered assistance and cooperation due to his unwillingness to serve his leadership. As an act of goodwill, Krasilnikov reported that the Social Democrat P. F. Mikhailov was a secret employee of the state and supplied the gendarmerie with valuable information. Subsequent revolutionary events showed that the information about P. F. Mikhailov and Krasilnikov’s intentions did not correspond to reality. Using unpublished sources from the Historical Archive of the Omsk Region (which contains documents from the Omsk Gendarme Office on the work of secret officers), this study identified and analyzed available historical sources, contents of the letter, conditions and reasons of its appearance, and goals and consequences of this action. This is the record keeping documentation of the. This work allows us to show a previously unknown episode of the life path of K. A. Popov and specifics of the specifics of the Omsk gendarme administration. This should be of interest to a wide range of readers; researchers in the history of the revolution and the Civil War in Russia, as well as specialists in the history of the domestic special services.

Cannon, Ammie. "Controversial Politics, Conservative Genre: Rex Stout's Archie-Wolfe Duo and Detective Fiction's Conventional Form." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/469.

Full text
Abstract:
Rex Stout maintained his popular readership despite the often controversial and radical political content expressed in his detective fiction. His political ideals often made him many enemies. Stances such as his ardent opposition to censorship, racism, Nazism, Germany, Fascism, Communism, McCarthyism, and the unfettered FBI were potentially offensive to colleagues and readers from various political backgrounds. Yet Stout attempted to present radical messages via the content of his detective fiction with subtlety. As a literary traditionalist, he resisted using his fiction as a platform for an often extreme political agenda. Where political messages are apparent in his work, Stout employs various techniques to mute potentially offensive messages. First, his hugely successful bantering Archie Goodwin-Nero Wolfe detective duo—a combination of both the lippy American and the tidy, sanitary British detective schools—fosters exploration, contradiction, and conflict between political viewpoints. Archie often rejects or criticizes Wolfe's extreme political viewpoints. Second, Stout utilizes the contradictions between values that occur when the form of detective fiction counters his radical political messages. This suggests that the form of detective fiction (in this case the conventional patterns and attitudes reinforced by the genre) is as important as the content (in this case the muted political message or the lack of overt politics) in reinforcing or shaping political, economic, moral, and social viewpoints. An analysis of the novels The Black Mountain (1954) and The Doorbell Rang (1965) and the novellas "Not Quite Dead Enough" and "Booby Trap" (1944) from Stout's Nero Wolfe series demonstrates his use of detective fiction for both the expression of political viewpoints and the muting of those political messages.

Abstract:
A debt of good will (utang na loob in Filipino) is incurred when a person becomes the beneficiary of significant assistance or favor given by another. Usually, the beneficiary is in acute need of the assistance given or favor granted. This provides an opportunity for the giving of help to serve as a vehicle for the expression of sympathy or concern. The debt could then be appreciated as one of good will because, by catering to another person's pressing need, the benefactor is able to express positive dispositions towards the beneficiary. It is not merely the receipt of the assistance or favor that puts the recipient in a position of indebtedness. The indebtedness is created by the benefactor's kagandahang loob (good will). An act can be considered to convey kagandahang loob only if it is done out of kusang loob (roughly, free will); and can only be considered to have been done out of kusang loob if the agent (1) is not acting under external compulsion, (2) is motivated by positive feelings (e.g. charity, love or sympathy) towards the beneficiary, and (3) is not motivated by the anticipation of reward. These conditions entail debt-of-goodwill relationships where the benefactor has no right to demand reciprocity but the beneficiary has a "self-imposed" obligation to repay kagandahang loob with kagandahang loob. Debts of good will are about some forms of justice. But we should not reduce all talk about debts of good will to talk about justice.

Abstract:
After leaving the East India Company’s employment for the second time, Strachan was dependent on the goodwill of the Carmelite friars; staying with them in their convent in Isfahan. Drawing on the Order’s archives, the circumstances under which Strachan entrusted his library to them for safe return to Europe are described. The extent of Strachan’s friendship with Pietro Della Valle is explored showing that after his return to Europe, the Roman traveller believed his friend had travelled to India and died there. A number of recently discovered manuscripts which belonged to Strachan are quoted which suggest that the Scotsman had become a member of the scholarly debating circle centred on the Iranian court headed by Shah Abbas’ son-in-law, the mathematician and philosopher, Mīr Dāmād. The importance of such an association helps explain Strachan’s decision to remain in the East.

Abstract:
The Goodwyn Interfield Pipeline was laid on the Australian North West Shelf, connecting the Goodwyn and North Rankin platforms, in 1993. It is operated by Woodside Energy Limited, and is used to transport hydrocarbon fluid from the Goodwyn and Echo/Yodel fields to the North Rankin A platform, which is connect to onshore processing facilities by the 140 km North Rankin trunkline. This pipeline was expected to self-bury along the majority of its length. After nine years however, some sections of the pipeline have experienced significant self-burial, however, other sections remain exposed. The first part of this paper details the results collected from annual surveys of the pipeline, while the second part looks at modelling the self-burial process. The effect of internal waves is found to be a key driver in the self-burial process.

Abstract:
Identification of the effect of mean stress for fatigue performance of the premium threaded connection for the OCTG pipes, was conducted via full-scale test. API standard material [grade L80-1] was used for the test. The nominal pipe outside diameter and wall thickness were 244.48 mm (9-5/8 inch) and 11.99 mm (0.472 inch), respectively. The fatigue life of the specimens tested with no mean stress was longer than that of the specimens tested with a tensile mean stress. Through-wall cracks were found at the imperfect thread area of the male embodiment, but the crack initiation site depended on the mean stress. However, the primary root cause of the failure on both mean stress levels can be regarded as the fretting fatigue. Fatigue life was also able to be estimated using modified Goodman relation.

Abstract:
The fatigue design of forged steel connectors in steel catenary risers (SCRs) is commonly based on the BS 7608 Class B S-N curve, which was derived from longitudinal butt weld data. However, there is very little direct support for this. Therefore, its validity was checked by performing a fatigue test programme involving strip specimens extracted from actual forged J-lay connectors. The effects of stress ratio and surface roughness on fatigue strength were investigated. On the basis of these test results, together with available published data obtained from specimens or structural components that failed in plain steel, the Class B S-N curve was verified. The method was particularly conservative for low stress ratios in the high-cycle regime and a procedure based on the use of the Goodman diagram was devised for correcting the Class B curve for mean stress. Surface roughness in the range investigated, between 3.2 and 8.1μm in Ra, had little effect on the fatigue performance of the forged steel.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to propose a methodology for assessing the fatigue life of dented pipelines according to the current high cycle fatigue theory. The proposed methodology employs S-N curves obtained from tensile test material properties and includes an expression to estimate stress concentration factors for spherical dents. Finite element analyses are carried out to determine stress concentration factors for different pipe and dent geometries. Using the numerical results, an expression to estimate stress concentration factors of dented pipelines is developed. Additionally, fatigue tests are conducted with the application of cyclic internal pressure on small-scale dented steel pipe models. Different pressure levels are employed, resulting in failures ranging from around 6000 to more than 106 cycles, enabling the determination of the endurance limit and of the finite life behavior of dented pipes. Furthermore, the Goodman and Gerber criteria to account for the mean stress are evaluated in view of the experimental results. The fatigue test results are used to validate the proposed assessment methodology for the analyzed conditions.

In ASME 2014 33rd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2014-23235.

Abstract:
The safety and reliability margin of offshore floating wind turbines need to be higher than that of onshore wind turbines due to larger environmental loads and higher operational and maintenance costs for offshore wind turbines compared to onshore wind turbines. However rotor cyclic loads coupled with 6 DOFs motions of the substructure, amplifies the fatigue damage in offshore floating wind turbines. In general a lower fatigue design factor is used for offshore wind turbines compared to that of the stationary oil and gas platforms. This is because the consequence of a failure in offshore wind turbines in general is lower than that of the offshore oil and gas platforms. In offshore floating wind turbines a sub-system fault in the electrical system and blade pitch angle controller also induces additional fatigue loading on the wind turbine structure. In this paper effect of selected controller system faults on the fatigue damage of an offshore floating wind turbine is investigated, in a case which fault is not detected by a fault detection system due to a failure in the fault detection system or operator decided to continue operation under fault condition. Two fault cases in the blade pitch angle controller of the NREL 5MW offshore floating wind turbine are modeled and simulated. These faults include: bias error in the blade pitch angle rotary encoder and valve blockage or line disconnection in the blade pitch angle actuator. The short-term fatigue damage due to these faults on the composite blade root, steel low-speed shaft, tower bottom and hub are calculated and compared with the fatigue damage under normal operational conditions considering same environmental conditions for both cases. This comparison shows that how risky is to work under the fault conditions which could be useful for wind turbine operators. The servo-hydro-aeroelastic code HAWC2 is used to simulate the time domain responses of the spar-type offshore floating wind turbine under normal and faulty operational conditions. The rain-flow cycle counting method is used to calculate the load cycles under normal operational and fault conditions. The short term fatigue damage to the composite blade root and steel structures are calculated for 6-hour reference period. The bi-linear Goodman diagram and a linear SN curve are used to estimate the fatigue damage to the composite blade root and the steel structures respectively. Moreover the fatigue damage for different mean wind speeds, sea states and fault amplitudes are calculated to figure out the region of wind speeds operation with the highest risk of damage.
