This chapter examines the relations between Russia and Mount Athos in the second half of the 19th century. The author examines certain aspects of the Church and diplomatic activities of Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin) during his service in the Embassy church in Constantinople (1865–1869). Drawing on previously unused materials published by researchers of Saint Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos and archive material from the personal fund of Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin) (Department of Manuscripts of the RSL, Coll. 148) that have also not yet entered scientific circulation, the author traces the interaction between the chief priest of the Embassy church with N. P. Ignat’ev, who was the head of the Russian diplomatic mission in the East, on the protection of the interests of Russian monasticism on Mount Athos.

Abstract:
The article examines the peculiar parallels and roll-overs in the destinies of L.N. Tolstoy and Archimandrite Leonid (Lev Kavelin) and outlines significant events in the life of the writer and theologian who went through a military school, who made foreign travels that were significant for their formation. Archimandrite Leonid, as well as Tolstoy, devoted a lot of their time to writing. The first wrote historical and theological works, essays, and the second, in his turn, wrote fiction, and later — publicistic articles and treatises, but it is natural to evaluate the roads of the famous contemporaries, taking into account their spiritual, moral, inner work. The author of the article pays special attention to the correspondence between the two Leos, their only and last meeting, as well as the possible use of the facts of Lev Kavelin’s biography by Tolstoy when creating the image of Father Sergiy. Roll calls in the fates of the writer and the archimandrite are a clear confirmation of the relevance of studying the interaction of secular and church writers, their possible, complex and multidirectional influence on each other.

Abstract:
The Department of Manuscripts of the Russian State Library contains letters of Hegumen Ieron (worldly Ivan Nosov-Vasil’yev), Schemamonk Innokentiy (worldly last name — Sibiryakov) and Iosif the monk, the brethren of New Athos Monastery, named after Simon the Canaanean, to Archimandrite Leonid (worldly Lev Kavelin), Rector of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, a prominent scientist, a prominent scholar of the Russian Orthodox Church, one of the most enlightened priests of the 19th century. In 1885, the book “Abkhazia and New Athos Monastery, Named after Simon the Canaanean, in It” by Archimandrite Leonid was a real event. The published letters were written by the brethren of the monastery, people of different cultural levels; but they are all imbued with a sense of gratitude to the author, who wrote a book about their holy monastery, which they love and care about the improvement of. Hegumen Ieron’s letters contain numerous details about the opening of Pitsunda Monastery as a skete of New Athos Monastery, about the restoration of the ancient Pitsunda temple, about its beautification and the forthcoming consecration. Schemamonk Innokentiy’s letters provide detailed information about the history of the Monastery, as well as some cartographic data needed by Archimandrite Leonid for his book. Monk Iosif ’s letter contains details of the economic life of the monastery.
