Hakky, Rafee. "The Ottoman külltye between the 14th and 17th centuries: its urban setting and spatial composition." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39085.

Abstract:
n order to serve the Muslim community, the Ottomans built nuclei which included educational and social services around the mosque. A nucleus of these was called a "külltye". Facilities in külltyes can be categorized under four main areas: religious, educational, social, and private. This research project attempted to examine the Ottoman külltye from an urban design point of view. It explored the külltye through two main questions: firstly. what was the relationship between the külltye and its surroundings. and secondly. how the kkülltye was designed. In order to answer these two questions, the külltye was studied at five scales: the state, the city, the immediate surroundings, the külltye itself, and flnal1y the individual open spaces in the külltye. This research work is basically a morphological study; however, when possible and appropriate the meaning behind the form is addressed. At the state scale it was found that a good level of sensitivity was utilized when planning for new külltyes. Larger cities had a larger number of külltyes and more complex programs for these külltyes. külltyes in small cities were programmed so as to serve the small community adequately without being oversized. külltyes in cities had more educational facilities while külltyes in the country were more oriented towards serving travelers. Within the city itself. central areas housed larger külltyes; while residential neighborhoods had smaller külltyes since they were intended to serve only that particular neighborhood. The number and kind of facilities were affected by the particular period during which külltyes were built. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries külltyes were large and housed a large variety of services. That period was a period of growth and prosperity. Later centuries exhibited a different trend where külltyes became smaller and included simpler programs. Reasons for this new trend could be the existence of enough services and the economic deterioration of the state.

Architecture has been described as "frozen music." To be sure, architecture has many physically static features, yet it can best be understood as a process in motion and as motion. Both architecture and music share attributes of qualitative movement. A composition unfolds in phases of tension and repose, extension, and arrival. Explicit patterns of organization are defined by proportions, gradients of texture and intensity, and through the experience of space in time. RELATED EXPLORATIONS ... is an inquiry and a proposed demonstration of a parallel process of composition. A landscape, a sonata, and a building design are "composed" synesthetically with respect to their temporal qualities. An agricultural site in Northern Massachusetts is chosen for a new community of artists. The project accommodates artist housing, studios, workshops, and facilities for performances and exhibitions. Perceptual qualities of the site, programs, and formal strategies are illustrated with diagrams, notations, and original photography. Musical scores and design drawings are presented together to aid direct comparison of the mediums. A cassette recording of the sonata for violin in D-major is included with this submission (30 minutes). The cassette will be shelved with the thesis manuscript in Rotch Library.

Abstract:
The term &ldquo
urban architecture&rdquo
has different meanings and is open to many interpretations. This thesis aims to highlight and further elaborate some definitions of &ldquo
urban architecture&rdquo
in which it is mainly characterized as architecture in the urban context. The Second Volume of Harvard Architecture Review on &ldquo
Urban Architecture&rdquo
is referred as a main source in discussing the content of the term. The concept of &ldquo
urban architecture&rdquo
can be identified in several theoretical contributions to the field of architecture. In this context, the themes &ldquo
urban artifact&rdquo
developed by Aldo Rossi and &ldquo
urbatecture&rdquo
developed by Bruno Zevi, are discussed in relation to &ldquo
urban architecture&rdquo
. In order to further clarify the concept, its relation to the fields of urban design, urbanism, and landscape urbanism is investigated. While it is distinguished from these fields, &ldquo
urban architecture&rdquo
is defined as an alternative architectural design approach and not as a new field. As an approach to architectural design that operates in an expanded field including landscape design and urbanism, &ldquo
urban architecture&rdquo
points to some strategies that allow to integrate works of architecture into their urban settings. Following this conceptual elaboration, the thesis aims at exploring the design strategies that characterize urban architecture. In this context, strategies related with landscape, infrastructure, and urban field are identified. The strategies based on these themes and their tools of operation are discussed through three case studies that cover Olympic Sculpture Park for the Seattle Art Museum, Kunsthal, and Borneo and Sporenburg.

Abstract:
Architects throughout have been forced to practice design surrounded by a society that generally lacks of architectural awareness and interest. A growing trend to transition from a relatively isolated profession into a field that promotes stronger public involvement is critical for architecture to evolve. Within the past 10 years, the growth of architectural centers have begun to dissolve the barrier between the profession and the general public in that their primary function regardless of what form they represent, is to introduce and educate issues of architecture that are an inescapable part of our built environment. An investigation of architectural research institute precedents, would allow for opportunities to understand how they have engaged professional knowledge with a growing educated public opinion. Promoting the idea of similar functions locally to a skeptic public has to be based on the importance of change, where new technologies are consistently transforming the way we approach design problems. Introducing a variety of techniques to display information, which go beyond any two dimensional format into a three or four dimensional, more tactile, interactive medium, allowing the observer to become engaged in what they are learning is important for individuals to establish meaning. The facility itself would be a catalyst for learning in which design issues are presented and solutions are viewed by the viewer in a multi-sensory way. The ultimate goal would be able to establish a system of memory responses to allow the general public a better connection with architecture. Creating a center of information housed within a singular building would be a beneficial beginning but it is important to express that information beyond any static building into a contextual environment in which it can be further related with. Adding richness to public spaces that promote cases of good architectural design can be an example that would allow the absorption of concepts through participation. Eventually, the results would lead to more knowledgeable public input about how their built environment is viewed and encourage better design.

Sakellaridou, Irini. "A top-down analytic approach to architectural composition." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1994. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.504524.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exercise in theory with an empirical exercise. It deals with the traditional architectural ideas of 'composition' and 'parti', and applies a formal analytic approach to them. It takes a top-down approach to the notion of 'composition', which tries to reflect the way architects think, and looks at the 'parti' as the deep structure of the building, which is abstract, global, and capable of many realisations. As a case study, 19 houses of Mario Botta are analysed. The purpose of the empirical exercise is to explore how far it is possible to produce an analytic construction of the notion of 'parti'. It asks: are there formal top-down themes which underly the composition of the houses and have to do with their relational structure? After the description of the houses a formal analysis of the identified themes takes place. These formal top-down themes are defined as rules. A distinction is made between the nature of the rule, the degree of its realisation and the domains (mass, elevations, plan) of its realisation. Formal analysis, thus, measures properties of the mass, the elevations and the plan. What analysis shows is that the interrelations of the rules define the 'parti'. Three phases are identified in the development of the 'parti' of the houses which show an evolution of it from combinations to structure. A distinction between a short and a long genotype for order is thus made, as well as a distinction between the intension and the extension of the rule seen as a relation. In the last part the thesis explores what these findings suggest towards theory building as well as implications for further research by addressing the notion of relation and by defining two different types of interrelations.

Abstract:
The analogy between the two arts of music and architecture has been a central theoretical theme since the conception of either. Emerging from a background that is situated in both architectural and musical instruction, the correlation between the two has always provided a certain degree of fascination for me. Having understood the linear narrative running between the translation of music and architecture, I endeavoured to locate a more conceptual foothold from which to derive my arguments. The essays below outline my discovery and development of the topic, transforming a simple analogy into a conceptual way of reading context so as to create an architectural composition of space, just as a musician uses the tools of notes (sounds), rests (silences), instrument quality, beat (time) and sequence to create a musical composition. This thesis developed similarly to that of a musical composition: where themes are presented, then developed, then treated in new ways, and finally returned to, creating a final composition that moves through exposition (stability), development (heightened tension and conflict) and resolution.

Abstract:
Throughout the last century, the popularization of the automobile and development of roads and highways has changed the way we live, and how cities develop. Bridges, aqueducts, and power plants had comparable impact in the past. I consider each of these examples to be â iconsâ of infrastructures that we humans build to improve our living environments and to fulfill our urge to become better.Fast forward to now. The last decades showed us the development of new sophisticated networks that connect people and continents. Communication grids, satellite communication, high speed fiber optics and many other technologies have made possible the existence of the ultimate human network - the internet. A network created by us to satisfy our needs to connect, to share, to socialize and communicate over distances never before imagined. The data center is the icon of this network.Through modern digitalization methods, text, sounds, images, and knowledge can be converted into zeroâ s and oneâ s and distributed almost instantly to all corners of the world. The data center is the center piece in the storage, processing, and distribution of this data. The Urban Data Center hopes to bring this icon closer to its creators and users. Let us celebrate its existence and shed some light into the inner workings of the worldâ s largest network. Let the users that inhabit this critical network come inside of it and understand where it lives. This thesis explores the expressive potential of networks and data through the design of a data center in Washington, DC.

Full text
Abstract:
This project represents the search for an architecture within the physical, historical, and political situation that an existing city presents. Set within the physical bounds of Savannah, it builds upon an understanding of the city as a series of Utopian propositions existing subliminally and often incongruously. As such, the project concerns the making of public space--space to relieve the culturally disjointed condition of modern urban life by acting as a sort of stage for creative expression and collective improvisation. This also involves the making of characteristic places, which by energetically acknowledging, confronting, challenging, or amplifying the cityâ s conceptions of itself, have the potential to generate both physical and metaphysical transformations. Furthermore, in response to urban development paradigms that are either senselessly uncoordinated or mechanistically authoritarian, the project proposes an alternative: the structured interweaving of a â civic layerâ of these generative urban centers, each serving a different part of the city. The centers must function architecturally as the symbols and containers of civic life, providing space and programmatic flexibility to allow for open cultural engagement while aesthetically enlivening the urban fabric and serving collectively as an index to the city at large.

Abstract:
With the growing role of cities, rapid urbanization, transformation under shifting economic, environmental, social and demographic conditions, the purpose of architecture is changing too. The legacy of the modernist decades left a broken urban fabric of isolated buildings from the urban landscapes of streets, plots, and blocks. In its aftermath, professionals sought to revive the traditional city fabric starting from the block, as the basic element. Although recent developments produce blocks, the livability of streets and other public spaces remains questionable. With a newfound focus into the block, as the fundamental structural element in planning, architectural typologies become the starting point to translate the qualities of urban life. The relationship between two scales, the urban and the architectural, will be examined in this thesis. Architectural elements and typologies have the ability to enhance public life, fostering positive social relations through meaningful design. The following research will explore architecture in Stockholm from the scale of an urban block, to the building typologies, and finally to the modest details within a single building. The fundamental idea is to extract building types and architectural elements that have an impact on the daily life of individuals in the city of Stockholm.

Mugnai, Niccolo. "Architectural decoration and urban history in Mauretania Tingitana (Morocco)." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/36703.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis aims to offer a new contribution to the study of regional Roman architectural decoration, focusing on the province of Mauretania Tingitana (northern Morocco). The analysis of the ornament is linked with that of the buildings where these architectural elements were employed. In addition to the reconstruction of local history and urban trajectories, the investigation is further extended to a broader extra‐provincial level, with particular attention to North Africa and the Mediterranean. The selected timeframe spans from the late Mauretanian period (c. mid‐first century BC) to the main phase of Roman provincial era (first to third century AD), also providing a glimpse into Late Antiquity (fourth to sixth centuries AD). The discussion in Volume I (Text) is based on the results of the field research carried out in Morocco, from 2011 to 2014, at four archaeological sites: Volubilis (Ksar Pharaoun); Banasa (Sidi Ali bou Djenoun); Sala (Chellah, Rabat); and Lixus (Tchemmich, Larache). The fieldwork involved the recording of the elements of architectural decoration preserved there, the vast majority of which are unpublished. The collected data were used to build up the typological classification presented in summary in Volume I and in full detail in Volume II (Appendix). The study also includes observations on the materials kept in the archaeological museums at Rabat, Tangier and Tétouan, and those from other important sites of the province (Thamusida and Zilil). The analysis shows how different artistic traditions were merged together in Tingitana during the Roman period: the persistence of pre‐Roman (Punic and Hellenistic) substrata; the influence of Roman official art and architectural decoration; and the creation of local‐style ornament. This mixture of styles is also reflected in the design of buildings and public spaces in each town, hinting towards the identification of equally mixed urban communities. The research has revealed the architectural vitality of this territory at the edge of the Roman world, while also illustrating a significant degree of adaptation of orthodox rules of Roman architecture.

Abstract:
This research study focuses on the various operations involved in shaping and developing a certain type of space in the hope of providing one with a better grasp of space as such, without overlooking the historical framework and its different perspectives. Based upon concrete examples borrowed from Middle Eastern as well as Western architectural projects, this work seeks to highlight the most appropriate means to circumscribe space - i. E. Its elements, growth and articulation - and postulates the association of mental tools of representation in all forms of spatial analysis. As part of an ongoing process of investigation on this very topic, this study deals with the morphological and structural aspects of space, relying on a specific architectural approach, and describing the inner workings of some of the tools – composition, scales, geometry, orientation, limits, etc. – required for spatial analysis

Abstract:
Cities are the main receptors of energy demand pressures and climate change. Energy consumptions of existing buildings in urban areas on the one side, and the combination of heat island phenomena, fuel poverty and global overheating on the other side, are threatening both built environment and inhabitants. The volumetric configuration of the urban textures and the materials that constitute the external surfaces, are the main factors that influence the microclimate of a city. Comprehend and being able to transform in an adequate way the urban settings could contribute to the improvement of the thermal comfort in outdoor and indoor built environments. By using as a principal comfort indicator the variation of the external temperatures in an unprecedented collaboration between different scales and different environmental simulation systems, this research work analyzes the energy saving potential given by the use of green and passive techniques and shows the synergies that may arise between outdoor and indoor spaces. The research work has tested the effects on the urban microclimate of the transformations induced in the outer urban spaces and, in parallel, how these modifications effect the reduction of temperature in the confined indoor spaces of the built environments. Open spaces and the surface of urban volumes are considered, measured and evaluated as a unique interacting environment.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the composition of the urban rhythms generated by urban design and planning. It recognises the temporal limitations of the graphic urban masterplan, with its tendency of being static and singular in the composition of urban expérience. Thus it proposes the integration of rhythm into the urban design and planning process, with the aim to improve the temporal quality of urban design. In order to represent these urban rhythms, as designed in the graphic masterplan, we propose their sonification. A Sonified Urban Masterplan (SUM) tool was developed, allowing the sonification of multiple layers of maps along a number of paths of interest. An urban sonic code was then developed in order to map the relevant graphic urban parameters into sound parameters. This sonification strategy was applied to the city of Paris as a case study, producing a sonified set of maps whose composition could be ‘listened’ to over time. Temporal issues concerning human movement, transport infrastructure, activity distribution, and the structuring of urban form and design elements could be represented and heard. We then investigated the potential of the SUM tool as a design and planning tool. Thus through the integration of sonification in urban design and planning, this thesis permits the spatio-temporal representation and composition of urban form

The definitive return of the Ottoman court to the capital city Istanbul in 1703 ushered in nearly a century of extraordinary building activity and urban change, in the process of which a new architectural idiom was defined. This dissertation examines the parameters of Ottoman architectural sensibility in the eighteenth century, starting at this pivotal moment and ending with the first European commissions in the 1790s. It draws principally on contemporary court poetry, and a wide array of Ottoman and European literary and visual sources, and architectural evidence. It departs from current interpretations, which view European influence as the chief impetus of architectural change in this period. Instead, I contend that this was a time when social transformations in the making since the late sixteenth century were enacted in the city's fabric through the tastes, aspirations, and recreational practices of the urban society. The continuous dynamic between these manifestations and the state s efforts to reassert its visible presence in the capital was central to the formation of a new urban and architectural landscape. This is highlighted in the first part, which explores the development of the suburban waterfront, the spatial and structural transformations of residences, the formal evolution of private gardens, the proliferation and unprecedented magnificence of public fountains, and the phenomenal expansion of public spaces. The second part focuses on the role of urban sensibilities in shaping a broader cultural horizon of expectations. Through an investigation of the age-old relation between garden and poetry in this period, I show that garden and poetic canon followed a parallel trajectory of "urbanization," symptomatic of a changing environment that accommodated a diverse range of social milieus and sensibilities. Drawing on the flourishing genre of rhymed architectural chronograms, I argue that this hybrid constellation of sensibilities informed the architectural vocabulary of eighteenth-century Istanbul. In Ottoman perception, beauty was measured against the sensuous pleasures derived from the visual and sensory experience of architecture. Brilliance, ornamental virtuosity, mimesis, and novelty, constituted the main parameters of appreciation. They mirrored a flamboyant and immensely hybrid visual idiom, tuned to the sensibilities of a broad and diverse public.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to demonstrate architectural design strategies and outcomes that provide alternative ways of considering the futures of areas under high developmental pressure. These areas are where the potential detrimental effects of unmediated, rapid change and development are at their most immediate and in need of consideration. Urban environments are complex physical manifestations of economic, environmental, social, cultural and political pressures represented by the often competing desires of public and private interest groups. Given the enormity of scale and complexity of these pressures, it is problematic to think of architecture as something that can design everything (perhaps as seen in traditional master planning) and in doing so, solve the problem. What may be more constructive is the consideration of architecture having the potential to be involved strategically in these issues, over a number of scales to work towards positive outcomes for the public domain. In recent years, both Victorian and Queensland state governments have released policy guiding the future growth of key regions within their borders. Each attempts to address accommodating large population increases over relatively short time periods by proposing consolidation in and around existing urban centres. This consolidation is seen as part of a strategy to limit urban sprawl and curtail its associated negative social, environmental and potential economic impacts. These targeted 'Activity Centres' become places of immanent transformation, points of pressure within the disaggregated field of the contemporary Australian city. Left un-mediated, developmental pressure in locations such as these is likely to create the same detrimental physical and social effects evident in the general prevailing homogeneity, commercialisation and piecemeal nature of current urban development. Through several architectural design projects, the research aims to explore the role of architecture as an urban mediator within these pressured locations. Through bridging scales from the broad metropolitan, to the finer grained specific, this mediation may begin to strategically 'set things up' for the public domain, towards facilitating valuable social exchange.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the value of locating contradictory architectural imperatives when attempting to understand the nature of uneven development in the urban field. The thesis is an attempt at establishing seemingly necessary, yet conflicting mandates in a more revolutionary architectural praxis in support of citizen infrastructure and social equality. Argued through issues related to ownership and subversion in contexts where tracts of urban space are sometimes taken over or appropriated by otherwise marginal groups, and as evident in informal settlements, by re-adapting civic symbols and in building as a form of protest or re-alignment. This is visible in most contested territories, along borders and in the temporal occupation of space. The thesis is supported through empirical investigations in a number of such sites in South Africa where these tactics are increasingly becoming controlled and institutionalized ‑ while at same time exposing new forms of social awareness, a growing autonomous resistance from still marginalised groups and pointing towards innovative spatial formations.

Abstract:
Hanoi owns a huge variety of urban architectural heritages that have a good value in community life and serve certain functions in the city' s spatial organisation. Despite great effort from the State, preservation is still a challenging task. In the context of rapid development, especially after the Renovation policy in 1986, Hanoi has raised the need to protect not only existing single heritage values but also their dynamic surrounding spaces. These elements have been "encroached", "occupied", threatening "heritage messages". Thereby, heritage issues are not only related to the value of each single building itself, but they are also an issue of urban life. Heritages are a component of the urban development context. Their influence and relation with other urban elements, including a dynamic life and diverse needs of the community, is undeniable. To complete the thesis, field surveys were conducted at heritage sites located at typical areas for city urbanisation, community interaction and urban development context. This helps to identify heritage issues such as heritage features, heritage value, mutual relationship between heritage -community -urban development, positive and negative changes of heritages, other relevant factors from community groups. Accordingly, the thesis puts forward suggestions to preserve heritages in the context of urban development, to encourage community participation and to balance the need for preservation and the constraints of city development. Developing the interaction space between heritage and community, setting up a Heritage Forum to enhance the sharing of heritage information among community groups, making policies based on market demand and the actual needs of different target groups... are among the suggested directions

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis has been to develop and validate the user interface of a service composition tool for creating mobile tourist services in a city environment. The project has been conducted in cooperation with SINTEF and the Norwegian research project UbiCompForAll. As part of this thesis, a number of scenarios were created initially, showing what kind of functionalities accessed using mobile devices might be useful for tourists in the city. Based on these scenarios, the graphical user interface of a composition service tool was created and then assessed through the involvement of several users using a paper prototyping approach. The results from the paper prototyping assessment showed that the proposed interface is generally easy to understand and use, although there were a number of improvements necessary in the areas of information abstraction, module naming and letting users be able to see the final product of the composition. In addition, as part of the assessment of the proposed interface, the realizability of the services specified using this interface was evaluated. An architecture for the service derived from the specification developed by the user was defined. This enabled us to check that all the information necessary for creating the composed services can be provided when using the proposed user interface.

He, Weiling. "Flatness transformed and otherness embodied: a study of John Hejduk's Diamond Museum and Wall House 2 across the media of painting, poetry. architectural drawing and architectural space." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/36608.

Full text
Abstract:
To study architectural space in relation to other works of art, the author aims at understanding how meaning depends upon the medium within which it is formulated. More importantly, the process of re-stating a work from one medium to another requires analytically rigorous study at the level of design thinking. In this thesis, Piet Mondrian’s sixteen Diamond Compositions, George Braque’s Studio Series, and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres’s Comptesse d'Haussonville will be studied as points of departure of John Hejduk¡’s two sets of architectural projects: the Diamond Series and the Wall House Series. Compositional similarities among these works will be discovered as the design means of Hejduk’s architecture. Moreover, these paintings suggest two design ends: C flatness and otherness. Hejduk’s poems about paintings and his architectural drawings will be examined as working media in which the two design ends are formulated. On this basis, the Diamond Series and the Wall House Series will be analyzed once again on the basis of how flatness and otherness are constructed in architectural space. In a way, Hejduk defines his own design means in the medium of architecture. It is noted that the re-statement of meaning in the medium of architecture involves both a retrospective understanding of the spatial structure and an embodied experience of the immediate spatial condition. Only when space makes sense independent of the references back to existing works in other media such as painting or poetry and the key design move is made will the readings of such works become architectural concepts. In the media of painting, poetry, architectural drawing, and architectural space, John Hejduk designs intention in its own right as part of the design process. Therefore, working across media entails far more than superficial references or fanciful representations. Rather, it is a serious investigation into the construction of medium-specific meaning, which the work of Hejduk clearly exemplifies. For the same reason, Hejduk’s work can be understood beyond personal or mystical expressions, becoming a tangible, logical, and thereby shared construction.

Abstract:
This licentiate thesis is part of a larger case study that examines the built cultural heritage in Kiruna’s urban transformation. The research study presupposes it is necessary to address cultural significance of the built environment in urban planning practice. In Sweden, a conservation planning strategy emerged during the 1980s, in response to the extensive urban renewals that took place in many towns over the decades before. In spite of this, there are many examples of how demands for urban renewal challenge urban conservation. The aim of the thesis is to explore how the concept of built cultural heritage is understood in contemporary urban planning and how urban planning practice affects the built cultural heritage. The main research question is: how are buildings and built environments transformed into cultural heritage? The analysis draws on concepts such as ‘heritagisation’, ‘heritage’ and ‘authorised heritage discourse’. Heritagisation is defined as a process in which something, such as a built environment, turns into heritage. Heritage is perceived as a social and cultural construction in which values and meanings are attributed to, for instance, built environments. There is a distinction between official heritage that is authorised by legislation and unofficial heritage, which is not formally recognised. The authorised heritage discourse is characterised as a hegemonic heritage discourse favouring the monumental and aesthetically appealing, being a concern for heritage specialists. The research is performed as a qualitative, interpretative intrinsic case study of Kiruna’s contemporary urban transformation. The case study is triangulated using multiple methods and a variety of data. The main methods used are text analysis of records, planning documents and media coverage as well as semistructured interviews and observations.Kiruna was established in 1900, with the mining company LKAB as the main stakeholder, in order to provide housing for the large number of workers required in the iron ore industry. The hopes were very high for the design of the new town and some of Sweden’s most famous architects, planners and artists at the time were hired. From the 1980s until 2005, the town’s built environments were recognised as built cultural heritage. Local, regional and national authorities collaborated in protecting designated buildings. In 2004, it became publicly known that subsidence caused by mining activities would affect the settlement; the town would, therefore, be relocated. This has caused controversies around the management of the built cultural heritage in the urban transformation processes. The case of Kiruna illustrates the impact of legislation in defining built cultural heritage and the influence of the authorised heritage discourse on urban planning practice. There are, however, difficulties in implementing the notion of cultural heritage as socially and culturally constructed into urban planning processes; rather, the heritage is perceived as a fixed entity. It is suggested that also unofficial heritage should be recognised in the urban planning processes, in order to manage the long-term urban transformation process.

Abstract:
HTML clipboardThis study is about Homeowner’s architectural responses to crime in Dar es Salaam Tanzania: its impacts and implications to urban architecture, urban design and urban management. The study explores and examines the processes through which homeowners respond to crimes of burglary, home robbery and fear of it using architectural or physical elements. The processes are explored and examined using case study methodology in three cases in Dar es Salaam. The cases are residential areas of Mikocheni B, Ilala Kasulu and Chang’ombe Housing. The findings from the three cases are compared and the common findings are illuminated and discussed using criminology, economic and social theories and concepts. The results of the study show that, homeowners physically and architecturally modify their home environments for many reasons. Homeowners do so by building or erecting wall fences around their houses and install or barricade doors and windows using metal bars. From the study, the notable main reasons are security and protection from burglary, thefts, home robbery and visual and physical privacy. Others include property marking, disputes and misunderstandings between neighbours and property encroachment by neighbours. In the study, it has been established that, the actions by the homeowners in responding to crime of burglary, thievery and home robberies have impacts and implications on the built environment. The impacts are: affects the visual experience of the built form by limiting view to houses; keeps neighbours apart thus limiting social interaction among residents; segregating public spaces and thus making them empty without people; encroaching on the streets; reducing surveilability of streets and neighbouring dwellings; create the impression of ‘private appearance’ therefore stigmataizing the residential neighbourhoods, all of which increase the vulnerability of areas as well as enhancing the ‘subjective’ feeling of fear in the areas. Furthermore, the responses pose risks to residents when fire evacuation from homes is required, including the effects that affect the environmental comfort conditions of homes and the overall built environment. Despite of the impacts to the built environment as summarised in the foregoing, the study has shown that, homeowners still erect wall fences and barricade their homes due to fear arising from previous crimes. On the basis of the impacts, a new approach to planning of residential housing areas is recommended in which the question of security against crime is included as design factor particularly in urban design. Either an approach to architectural design of houses and the layout of houses that considers crime as an important factor in addition to ‘target hardening’ approach is recommended to increase visibility and surveilability of built environments. The study concludes by highlighting five implications to urban architecture, urban design and urban management at planning and architectural design, considerations which may be of impacts towards improving built environment and management of the urban residential arena. The study ends by outlining and recommending areas of further research.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1999.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 129-133).
A thesis for architecture in three movements: I. Tempo molto moderato. (Theory.) (2767 w). II. Allegro. (Architectural Expression.) (2283 w). III. Gusto. (Final Building.) (3102 w). To see space, one needs a language. To express space, one needs a vocabulary. I have built on an existing vocabulary - one found in the writings of Faulkner - of non-linear narration. Through a series of studies I attempted to translate this literary construct into a language of spatial and experiential expression. In a dialogue with the literary, I added an architectural vocabulary by identifying existing buildings that possessed non-linear qualities. Together, this language and these vocabularies form my tools for articulating my vision. In music one can have shifting tonal centers. In literature separate points of view can create simultaneous stories. How can architecture create a multiplicity of spatial experiences and thrive from an intersection of art forms? From my studies I have abstracted two components that in dialogue lend each other greater significance. The movement through the building - necessarily sequential and physically linear - complements the experience of the spaces: non-linear and open for multiple interpretations. I attempt to express this dichotomy by setting up a tension in the architecture of anomalies to the expected. The space challenges perception and inspires in the moment of overlap (or gap) a re-thinking of the conventional and the usual. The building I will present is the Center for Contemporary Composition. Housed within one building, a multitude of programmatic activities cater to an environment of contemporary music creation and performance. It is a place for short-term residency that encourages idea exchange and intense creativity within a group of composers coming from diverse backgrounds. The building is the medium that renders new ideas in an architectural language, an evocative language derived from an external yet parallel source.

Abstract:
Ankara, being the capital, has been the most important city for the New Modern Turkish State on its way of establishing the modernity project of Turkey. The development of the urban planning projects proceeded on the basis of this aimed concept of the new society, carrying the privilege of being the symbol of the modern republic, prosperity and wealth. Keç

ren is one of the main districts of Ankara. The main aim of this study is to analyze and describe the ideological departure of Keç

ren from the concept of the &ldquo
modern&rdquo
Ankara, within the last ten years. Here the attitude of the municipality and its role as the agent of civil power leading the architectural and urban transformation of Keç

ren from a district full of gecekondu to one full of &ldquo
decorated sheds&rdquo
will be discussed. Here, the term &ldquo
decorated shed&rdquo
, introduced by Robert Venturi, will be used for the explanation of the new architectural and urban elements Furthermore, the attitude of the society and the architects and contractors who are responsible for the actual case will be brought into argumentation. In this sense, other subsidiary terms will be used to explain the process of the case are
populism and politics, nationalism, the ideology of the Turkish nation (Tü
