Abstract:
Architectural books in use in England – and specifically in the Royal Academy Library – in the second half of the 18th century included translations of the major Italian treatises; Sir William Chambers’ Treatise on civil architecture (the first work of its kind by an English author); volumes recording actual buildings by English architects; archaeological works documenting the remains of ancient buildings; and works by Fréart and Perrault on the classical orders. The latter were complemented by Henry Emlyn’s eccentric Proposition for a new order of architecture published in 1781. The contents of Sir John Soane’s private library included a number of works not available at the Royal Academy, which he criticised for providing only a “very limited collection of Works on Architecture”. Soane’s library can be seen to have anticipated the professional architectural library, including more practical books (intended in many cases for the use of builders and carpenters), which was founded at the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1834 — today’s British Architectural Library.

Abstract:
Analyzing the letters of architect Luigi Vanvitelli (1700––1773), Robin L. Thomas reconstructs his library and explores his prolific reading. From the Library to the Printing Press: Luigi Vanvitelli's Life with Books demonstrates how Vanvitelli's books influenced his architectural practice and, conversely, how his opinions and tastes conditioned the ways he read. Literary ideas of decorum explain the stylistic heterogeneity of his architectural oeuvre and influenced the way he wrote. His Dichiarazione dei disegni del Reale Palazzo di Caserta (1756), documenting the magnificent palace he designed for King Charles Bourbon, is among the most lavish books of its time. Its analysis illuminates how the architect interacted with the printed page and how books influenced architecture in the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
American architectural journals first appeared in the second half of the 19th century. Encouraged by advances in printing and graphic technologies, they were part of a general trend toward specialized journalism during this period. The architectural periodical developed along with journals for women, clerics, railroad engineers, and grocers. Yet it also resulted from publishers' desires to capitalize on the success of house pattern books and the widespread interest in architecture that they created. Despite these favorable omens the early American architectural journals foundered; they had troubled and short lives, generally lasting only two years. The premise of this paper is that their success depended on the architectural profession's direct involvement and support and the backing of a major publishing house. Beginning with the first periodicals of the 1850s and 1860s, architectural journalism identified itself with the emerging profession; its editorials asserted the architects' primacy in design and construction and distinguished their role from the builders'. Professional and educational issues, in fact, took precedence over aesthetic and stylistic discussions in editorial columns and articles. Yet the journals displayed the same pragmatism that had characterized builders' guides and pattern books, the first architectural literature published in the United States.

Abstract:
Victorian architectural theorists believed that buildings were capable of conveying meanings in a direct and precise way, rather like books, paintings, or even orators. These meanings were understood to refer to things outside the building: architecture was thus conceived to be a representational form of art. This essay explores some of the consequences of this view. What subjects did Victorian buildings represent, and how did they do so? What criteria determined a building's adequacy as a representation? How, finally, did the demand for representational content shape the central Victorian concept of architectural truth?

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractIn 1936, the Bauhaus-trained architect Ernst Neufert published the first edition of his seminal book Bau-Entwurfslehre. One of the most successful architecture books to date, the encyclopedic volume offered dimensioned floor plans for architectural tasks ranging from bunkers to dog kennels to Zeppelins. Two years later, Neufert started working as ‘norm expert’ for Reichsminister Albert Speer, with whom he published another manual in 1943, Bauordnungslehre. Meant to provide a total system of measures for architecture at large, the volume subjected building blocks, bricks and human bodies to Neufert's all-encompassing octametric system. This article contrasts these two books against Neufert's unpublished treatise – ‘Lebensgestaltungslehre’. Never a bound volume, the latter was sketched out in diary entries between 1936 and 1942 on folded DIN A4 sheets (themselves normed) and organized in a card index. Reading them across their medial states, this article investigates the material, methodological and ideological character of Neufert's Lehren. This is not the story of a handbook; rather, this is a story of constructing Lehre one sheet at a time. Neufert's attempt to format German society in the 1930s and 1940s through inherently architectural means such as floor plans, norms and a system of measures ultimately shaped the designing subject – starting with himself.

Abstract:
Purpose of research is to analyze the semantic features of terminological nominations in Ukrainian architectural terminology. Object of research is Ukrainian terminological vocabulary of architecture. Subject of research is the semantic differences between the terminological lexemes of the architectural field of activity. Material of research is vocabulary articles of explanatory and terminological dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms. The paper applies descriptive, comparative and structural methods. Practical value – codification of modern Ukrainian terminology of architecture. Results of research: 1) certain semantic differences of the studied architectural lexemes that function in this system of terms are highlighted; 2) at each historical stage of development of the terminological system of architecture it is important to single out new characteristic changes in the semantics of terms and in the structure of terminological nominations that organize it; 3) terminological dictionaries on architecture, published in different historical periods, differently reflect the innovative changes in the architectural fund; 4) dictionaries of synonyms do not always give the necessary explanations with the designation of the semantic features in the frame of a specific terminological unit; 5) expansion of the conceptual field of the terms in architecture occurs constantly, which indicates stable active processes within it; 6) architectural terminological nominations require codification in dictionaries, reference books, state standardized documents.

Chung, Woo-han. "Model as a thinking tool (an architectural complex in an urban district)/." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52235.

Full text
Abstract:
A model is a communication tool, making contact with the deeper self as well as with others. lt is a bridge between conception and perception, or intellect and intuition. It helps us to develop thoughts and evolve ideas. People are convening in New York City. It is called a melting pot. Everyone mingles there without losing his own characteristics. lt is a big house which contains gardens, paths, rooms and millions of people. On East 14th street, there is an open block which could be a small city containing a park, houses, offices and stores. This thesis demonstrates the development of a complex, or if you will, a small city, on the block, with the help of models.

Abstract:
A design is proposed for a library located on a comer site in a downtown area of some historical importance. The character of the surrounding buildings demanded that the library acknowledge its context. This acknowledgement occurred through the use of an axial organization from the site and a transformation of formal elements from the surrounding buildings. Included are developmental sketches; transformational drawings; plans, elevations and sections of the library; photographs of surrounding buildings; and frames from a computer-animated ”fly-through” view of the library.

Horton, Ian. "The Foreign Architectural Book Society and architectural elitism." Thesis, Open University, 2000. http://oro.open.ac.uk/58057/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the Foreign Architectural Book Society [F.A.B.S.] and its members from its foundation in 1859 through to the 1930s. Particular attention is given to the second generation of F.A.B.S. members, active between 1890 and 1920, who shared scholarly interests apparent in the architectural values they promoted in publications and their own buildings. In this period these F.A.B.S. members also occupied positions of power within the profession and influenced their contemporaries by encoding Beaux-Arts values in a reformed architectural education system. These developments are analysed using certain aspects of elite theory: this highlights the protectionist aspects of this education system and explains the survival into the 1930s of architectural values promoted by F.A.B.S. members. The F.A.B.S. was founded with the intention of internally circulating foreign architectural books and this study examines how the society operated. The functioning of the F.A.B.S. is analysed in relation to other societies its members joined, establishing their high social standing and a network of scholarly organisations through which architectural values were formed. An analysis of publications and buildings by the second generation of F.A.B.S. members reveals the fact that they promoted two architectural styles, Neo-Wrenaissance and Monumental Classicism. It is argued that Wren's influence was central to the formation of the values embodied in these styles. In the case of the Neo- Wrenaissance it is shown that this is a more appropriate term to describe works usually noted as examples of Neo-Georgian architecture. When examining Monumental Classicism it is noted that F.A.B.S. members used Beaux-Arts compositional devices, as encoded in architectural education, but promoted it as a national style by invoking the example of Wren. In conclusion it was argued that F.A.B.S. members encoded these stylistic values in the reformed architectural education system and this partially explains how the outmoded values of the Neo-Wrenaissance and Monumental Classicism managed to survive as valid stylistic options until the end of the 1930s.

Abstract:
Abstract: Corbusier’s influence in Chilean modern architecture is unique and it is characterized, with few exceptions, by superficial and figurative adoptions of his ideas and forms. Among these exceptions is the singular case of the architect Juan Borchers Fernández (1910-1975), whose acute observations and lucid review expose his adherence while at the same time they reveal the contradictions, misinterpretations and shortcomings about corbuserian’s thesis. This analysis is based on two fundamental original books (Vers une Architecture, 1923; Le Modulor, 1950) and two articles (L’angle droit, 1923; L’espace indicible, 1946) by Le Corbusier and references to them in Borchers’ books, articles, manuscripts, correspondence and travel journals. Abstract:
Abstract: Asked about the architectural education and although he outlined his ideas on the subject mainly in two of his books: "Précisions" (1930) and "Sur les quatre routes" (1941), Le Corbusier replied: "I have never received proper education. I am self-taught even in sport. ". The amazing power of Le Corbusier’s didactic resides in five points: his training, his theoretical positioning, his invention of typologies, his diffusion of architecture, his prolific production. Thus, beyond his “Oeuvres Complètes” Le Corbusier offers to whom wants to use it, a rich educational field to discover and share. No program has eluded him whether it is villas or houses, collective housing, offices, facilities (public or private), institutional buildings, museums, factories : everything is material for invention. This invention is accompanied with his diffusion of architecture, of his ideas in books or lectures all over the world. But this is nothing compare to his production to various scales from the minimum housing to the monumental building. Therefore with the close look on the Modern Quarters Frugès project built in Pessac in 1926 we will examine how this "laboratory" is an educational experience that has of exemplarity value and is still relevant today. Abstract:
The article contains a linguistic analysis of the book ‘The Drawn City’ by A. Ryzhkov; the book comprises reproductions of pictures and respective text in the context of a mental map of the city of Yekaterinburg. In approaching the mental map as spatial information in people’s minds, reflecting the image of the city, the goals of linguistic analysis are to show the vision of the metropolis and the linguistic ways of verbally expressing the thoughts and feelings of the landscape artist; to determine the value to society of the private perception of the city through artistic representation and textual expression. Stylistic analysis of the text reveals the dominant features regarding the lexical, morphological and syntactic levels, while the pragmatics of the text consider its social relevance. Peculiar traits of the author’s style of the artist and the writer, as perceived by readers, have been listed; important points of the mental map of the city have been defined accounting for the book’s content: architecture, dominant idea, eclectics. The perception of time in synchronicity and diachronicity in the narrative regarding Yekaterinburg is considered, the motif of transition from reality to imagery is shown. Examples are given of positive, negative and contradictory evaluations of architectural objects, verbally influencing readers through the creation of visual images. There are linguistic tricks listed which were used in the book by A. Ryzhkov uses language techniques that hold the attention of the recipient of the text: comparison, personification, the use of colloquial language, humour and wordplay, and dialogisation. Methods of the creation of an imagery-geographic map of urban space have been shown in the author’s iconic-symbolic form. A conclusion was made on the significance of the book of A. Ryzhkov having used a visual-verbal method for the creation of a sustainable and replicable image of the city in the human mind. The artist’s civic stance on city protection has been set forth.

Abstract:
In December of 2015, a fire destroyed the campus library at Mzuzu University (Mzuni) in northern Malawi, Africa. The entire collection of nearly 50,000 volumes, much of the university’s computing infrastructure, and an irreplaceable archive of Malawi heritage artifacts were lost. In a resource limited context where reliable access to books and data resources is scarce, the Mzuni library was a cherished repository of knowledge and a symbol of self-reliance for students, faculty, and the greater Mzuzu community. Since the fall of 2017, a team of students and faculty from the Virginia Tech Center for Design Research in the United States has been working to design a new library in support of the national, regional, and global aspirations of Mzuzu University. The design team began the project by visiting Malawi, where they defined essential goals and parameters through contextual immersion and stakeholder meetings with Mzuni, national building officials, local architects, and members of the U.S. Embassy. This trip raised critical awareness of the very real social, cultural, and practical issues associated with pursuing international impact projects in resource-limited countries. Most importantly, the experience grounded the team in a shared set of architectural and material strategies that would go on to define the various design propositions, including the selected “Portal” scheme. Currently, the Portal is being further developed in collaboration with architects from Malawi, with construction slated to begin in 2019. This paper seeks to document and interrogate the design of the new Mzuzu University library by positioning material conscience as a multivalent instrument of empowerment, aspiration, and identity for resource-limited countries.

Abstract:
Global research output grows exponentially each year. This paper attempts to drive meaning out of this big data on two fields of research in architecture. It maps the interaction between the research fields of sustainability in architecture and architectural education through the perspective of bibliometric data analysis and its visualization. Based on the analysis of bibliometric data, it draws and juxtaposes two timelines for the field of sustainable architecture and the field of architectural education. The objective is to propose a retrospective method that can provide insight for a broader understanding of sustainability and its impacts on architectural education. It utilizes VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Gephi to visualize bibliometric networks, along with Tableau to analyze the number of journal articles and publications published across years. The paper presents initial findings concerning the leading scholars, trends, and patterns of the research areas, milestone events, and dominant studies to point out the significance of the cooperation between research and education fields of the related topic.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper discusses the Ministry of Education & Health building in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil - a project developed by several Brazilian architects in collaboration with Le Corbusier. The aim is to analyze the working process by comparing three publications: Œuvre Complete 1934-1938, Brazil Builds: Architecture New and Old: 1652-1942 and Œuvre Complete 1938-1946. The analysis of these three books presents a complete outlook of the building’s design, from its beginning up to its construction. In other words, one can see the creation of a building. While the first book introduces the project in an incipient stage, going through the progress of elaborating ideas and proposals, the second - Brazil Builds - presents the construction process of the building. Finally, the last book presents the final design and photographs of the building already built, just a year after being finished.Palabras clave: Brazil Builds; Le Corbusier; Arquitectura moderna brasileña. Abstract:
Architects and designers are obligated to think comprehensively to create aesthetically pleasing buildings together with functional features. The modern movement of architecture represents a dramatic movement in the buildings design to create a different functional and new architecture. There is a debate about the priority of beauty (aesthetics) and functionality (ethics) in this architectural style and leads to ambiguity in evaluating ethics and aesthetics. Hence, the study aims to understand the relationship between ethics and aesthetics value in architecture's modern movement. This study hypothesizes that there is a significant relationship between ethical and aesthetical values through the functionality of modern architecture. The study has proposed a conceptual model to be applied in future studies on different case studies. This is through assessment tools to evaluate the presence of ethics and aesthetics in modern architectural style.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper suggests that Le Corbusier’s editorial composition of the book Ronchamp: Les Carnets de la recherche patiente 2 can be regarded as an artisticmanner ofre-composing architectural photography that partly contrasts LeCorbusier’s otherwise conservative concept of the synthesis of the arts, which so far had excluded themediumof photography. The paper proposesthat the book, which was published at a time when The Chapel of Ronchamp (1950-1955) had become controversial among architectural critics, aspired to communicate the architectural project as a work of art by creating links to other art forms, particularly by: 1) emphasizing Hervé’s artistic, partly non-representational, approach to architectural photography; 2) employing principles of musical composition; and 3) approximating photographic practise of documenting sculpture. Le Maux, Laurent. Bagehot for Central Bankers. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp147.

Abstract:
Walter Bagehot (1873) published his famous book, Lombard Street, almost 150 years ago. The adage “lending freely against good collateral at a penalty rate” is associated with his name and his book has always been set on a pedestal and is still considered as the leading reference on the role of lender of last resort. Nonetheless, without a clear understanding of the theoretical grounds and the institutional features of the British banking system, any interpretation of Bagehot’s writings remains vague if not misleading—which is worrisome if they are supposed to provide a guideline for policy makers. The purpose of the present paper is to determine whether Bagehot’s recommendation remains relevant for modern central bankers or whether it was indigenous to the monetary and banking architecture of Victorian times.
