Chung, Woo-han. "Model as a thinking tool (an architectural complex in an urban district)/." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52235.

Full text
Abstract:
A model is a communication tool, making contact with the deeper self as well as with others. lt is a bridge between conception and perception, or intellect and intuition. It helps us to develop thoughts and evolve ideas. People are convening in New York City. It is called a melting pot. Everyone mingles there without losing his own characteristics. lt is a big house which contains gardens, paths, rooms and millions of people. On East 14th street, there is an open block which could be a small city containing a park, houses, offices and stores. This thesis demonstrates the development of a complex, or if you will, a small city, on the block, with the help of models.

Full text
Abstract:
A design is proposed for a library located on a comer site in a downtown area of some historical importance. The character of the surrounding buildings demanded that the library acknowledge its context. This acknowledgement occurred through the use of an axial organization from the site and a transformation of formal elements from the surrounding buildings. Included are developmental sketches; transformational drawings; plans, elevations and sections of the library; photographs of surrounding buildings; and frames from a computer-animated ”fly-through” view of the library.

Horton, Ian. "The Foreign Architectural Book Society and architectural elitism." Thesis, Open University, 2000. http://oro.open.ac.uk/58057/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the Foreign Architectural Book Society [F.A.B.S.] and its members from its foundation in 1859 through to the 1930s. Particular attention is given to the second generation of F.A.B.S. members, active between 1890 and 1920, who shared scholarly interests apparent in the architectural values they promoted in publications and their own buildings. In this period these F.A.B.S. members also occupied positions of power within the profession and influenced their contemporaries by encoding Beaux-Arts values in a reformed architectural education system. These developments are analysed using certain aspects of elite theory: this highlights the protectionist aspects of this education system and explains the survival into the 1930s of architectural values promoted by F.A.B.S. members. The F.A.B.S. was founded with the intention of internally circulating foreign architectural books and this study examines how the society operated. The functioning of the F.A.B.S. is analysed in relation to other societies its members joined, establishing their high social standing and a network of scholarly organisations through which architectural values were formed. An analysis of publications and buildings by the second generation of F.A.B.S. members reveals the fact that they promoted two architectural styles, Neo-Wrenaissance and Monumental Classicism. It is argued that Wren's influence was central to the formation of the values embodied in these styles. In the case of the Neo- Wrenaissance it is shown that this is a more appropriate term to describe works usually noted as examples of Neo-Georgian architecture. When examining Monumental Classicism it is noted that F.A.B.S. members used Beaux-Arts compositional devices, as encoded in architectural education, but promoted it as a national style by invoking the example of Wren. In conclusion it was argued that F.A.B.S. members encoded these stylistic values in the reformed architectural education system and this partially explains how the outmoded values of the Neo-Wrenaissance and Monumental Classicism managed to survive as valid stylistic options until the end of the 1930s.

In 2008, we tore all our books from the past three years into pieces. It was a celebration of graduating from high school and longing for a new life. Yes, we hated books. We were forced to stay in the classroom 10 hours every day, our eyes switching between books and the blackboard. We were filled with tasks from books. Directed by the running countdown on our blackboard, we were spurred on by those slogans surrounding us. Soon, we forgot how to read books and we forgot the joy of reading. Unfortunately, most of the libraries in China were designed to represent the sanctity of knowledge and the dignity of the nation, a clear a symbol of national pride and knowledge. We found ourselves too small to embrace it. The joyful experience we were after did not exist here. However, we did have some amazing discoveries when we escaped our classrooms of book-counting. A new world composed of three secret gardens was there waiting for us, as long as we had the patience to look for it. My thesis reads from Chinese gardens clues for the libraries of the future, and arrive on the principles to create a new kind of library, one that emphasizes personal emotions and experiences, forgets the authority of books and nations and blurs the boundary between story and reality. To read in the garden library is to simultaneously sense the physical surroundings with the body, observe the beautiful view with the eyes, and get carried away in a story unbounded by time and space. The library of the future will transcend its environment and present experiences as perception, perceptions as stories, and stories as experiences. Who knows what can come from such a playful practice of knowledge?

Karamanoglu, Sema. "One Historian Two Books: Beatriz Colomina." Master's thesis, METU, 2013. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12615519/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore selected works of Beatriz Colomina, a revisionist architectural historian who has made influential studies on visuality, domesticity, media and gender, and their reflections in the architectural world. Colomina is a distinguished architectural historian since she places a new lens on a period when architecture ceased to be only for the elite and media has gradually penetrated into everyone&rsquo
s life in order to understand how architecture became accessible to the public through media and how this has affected the perception of modern architecture. This new lens entailed not only the inseparability of media and architecture but also how war and domesticity featured in this relationship. Against this background, this study attempts to investigate the innovative approach of Beatriz Colomina by comparing and contrasting her two prominent books: Privacy and Publicity: Modern Architecture as Mass Media (1994) and Domesticity at War (2007). The former introduces us to the relationship between architecture and media, whereas the latter exemplifies this relationship by focusing on the cold war period as a time where media became an integral part of the domestic environment. This study aims to extract Colomina&rsquo
s contribution to architectural history by first disentangling and analysing and then merging these two books under common themes. In doing so, it seeks to answer the following questions: What is the role of archives in Colomina&rsquo
s methodology in writing these two books? What is the relationship between the document and the historian that emerges from this methodology? What common themes can be extracted from these two books as an analytical framework in order to better understand and study Colomina&rsquo
s approach? What differentiates her as a historian from other historians of modern architecture, specifically from Siegfried Giedion and Kenneth Frampton? What messages does Colomina give her reader through the form as well as the content of her books? What is her contribution to architectural historiography?

To begin is the time of belief in form. Design is the maker that serves this belief. To build is action from a sense of order. When the work is completed the beginning must be felt. I recall the beginning as Belief. It is the time of realizatlon of Form. It is feeling as religion, and thought as philosophy. Then there is no material no shape no dimension. And then recall the adventure of design when dream-inspired. Form must answer to the laws of order so as to be.

Obritz, Joseph Steven. "The use and abuse of architecture: history, elements, and conditions." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52109.

Full text
Abstract:
Architecture is a way of making that enables man to present his world. This making allows him to find his relationship to architecture and himself. The history of architecture is a part of the history of man and demands our attention if we are to make a contribution to the life of man. Nietzsche states that history is necessary above all to the man of action...who needs examples, teachers, and comforters he cannot find among his contemporaries.¹ “We would serve history only so far as it serves life.”² He also feels that the imitation of the past will only lead to a stagnant and degenerate life. There is a contradiction between these statements concerning imitation. In philosophy imitation has been defined as having two forms positive and negative. Negative imitation would be making an image of an original that reveals all that is immanent in the original. The act is redundant and therefore unnecessary. Positive imitation involves an understanding of things or ideas inherent in the original and lets us present our understanding which may expand beyond the original or lead to a new shift in the original paradigm. We must observe the history of man’s making and gather things that inform us about the world of architecture. History becomes a tool to facilitate architecture. We gather that which for us carries some essential meaning.³ This meaning may be manifested in our understanding of types, elements, or conditions of a particular culture as well as a personal desire to understand them in relationship to ourselves. For example, the elements and conditions that compose the house in some African tribes are considered as metaphors to parts of the human body i.e. door as mouth, window as eye, etcetera. When a family member loses a body part the corresponding element is removed or altered. Throughout history typologies have contained the models and archetypes of man’s ideas and ways of thinking, which are revealed through making. These remain with us and contain elements and conditions that change depending upon our focus. In the scale of the city there exists other types such as houses, churches, and libraries that become elemental when discussing the city as a whole. The conditions occur when analyzing the relationship of the elements with each other and the results that their organization produce. If we translate the scale to building types the wall, column, and stair become the elements and conditions become the mediation between these elements. Desire urges memory and imagination in our making of a re-presentation of that desire and a transformation of our observation. Imagination transforms our observation of what we find essential in history. We understand our relationship to things when we make them and through the revealing of things we come to understand ourselves. Memory recalls things or events that carry some meaning to us, but it also contains the more complete knowledge of things that we may come to know through making. Art is the imaginative appropriation of the essential strivings of historical man.⁴ The actuation of the idea is through the made object. We do this by painting, drawing, sculpture, and poetry. The object is two fold. It contains within it the idea of the reality of the thing and the drawing itself as a thing. An idea of a thing contains some elements common to all the other realities of the thing which makes them thinkable.⁵ When we speak of these things we bring to them some of its history that is known to us. Making allows us to re-present a thing which best actuates our idea and understanding of the thing, and enables us to redefine our world. 1 Nietzche, Friedrich Use and Abuse of History, The p. 12 2 Ibid., p. 3 3 Desmond, William Art and the Absolute: A Study of Hegel’s Aesthetics p. 61 4 Ibid., p. 61 5 Aristotle On the Soul. bk. 1, ch. 4

This thesis examines the conventions of two-dimensional articulation in architecture and its relationship to book illumination in early fourteenth century Iran. By examining the illuminations in a series of imperial Qurans copied in the first quarter of the fourteenth century and comparing them to the architectural decoration of contemporaneous buildings in llkhanid Iran, the thesis proposes that it is the rigor of geometric elaboration in two-dimensional planes that make such a comparison across media plausible. The taste for increasingly complex two-dimensional geometric extrapolations and the creation of layered surfaces, such as those exhibited in the decorative designs of the Mausoleum of Uljaytu in Sultaniyya, Iran, ultimately engender a perception of architecture that alludes visually to an rendition of two dimensional space that is common to both painting and architecture.

Birkhead, Stanley Scott. "Architecture of the upper Sego Sandstone, Book Cliffs, Utah." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3326.

Full text
Abstract:
This study maps the facies architecture and geometry of stratigraphic surfaces within the tide-influenced upper Sego Sandstone exposed in the Book Cliffs between Crescent Junction and Thompson Springs, Utah. A bedding diagram was constructed by correlating 32 measured stratigraphic logs across this 8.5 kilometer strike-oblique outcrop to interpret depositional environments and the sequence stratigraphic setting of this tidally-influenced sandstone. Five facies associations are defined: marine shale, lower shoreface, tidally-influenced bedsets, heterolithic tidal bedsets, and tidal flat deposits. Vertical facies trends define two sandy intervals separated by a marine shale, that are interpreted to record episodic progradation of deltaic shorelines. Erosion surfaces at the base of these intervals are interrupted to record tidal scouring of the sea floor during falling stage regression. Sandstone-bodies within these intervals shingle westward recording delta lobes that thinned and became more heterolithic. Although sandstone intervals are interpreted to record progradation, internal cross stratification is dominantly tidal-flood oriented. This is interpreted to record preferential preservation of bedload transported by flood tidal currents onshore, even though net sediment was directed offshore in a suspended ebb-oriented hypopycnal plume and as fluid mud during uncommon river floods. Deposits above high-relief erosion surfaces observed to cut down into the upper Sego Sandstone do not meet the criteria for incised valley fills. These surfaces are interpreted to record tidal current enlargement of distributary channels after abandonment. Such incisions thus do not necessarily record changes in sea level.

Os outros estudos, mais sucintos, tratam de livros inspirados nesse primeiro caso: FARMAX: Excursions in Density, do escritório MVRDV (1998), e Yes is More: an archicomic on architectural evolution, de Bjarke Ingels Group (2009). A partir de paralelos e divergências entre esses três casos, a tese procura ressaltar aspectos relevantes das dinâmicas profissionais e culturais internas à disciplina da arquitetura na contemporaneidade.
The dissertation investigates the role of book design in architecture s disciplinary culture since the last decade of the twentieth century, especially in monographs produced by firms internationally famed. Considering that book design has been increasingly used by famous architects as a tool for the construction and display of public identity and attitude, the goal of this work is to analyze whether and how some attributes of professional discourse and even of designs from the architecture offices (who are both authors and the subjects), are incorporated in the formal configuration given to books and, especially, in the graphic language of project presentations in them. The dissertation examines the cultural role and expressive potential of the printed book medium in the context of recent times electronic media and, specifically, in the historical development of relations between the discipline of architecture and its media of diffusion. It presents a methodological reflection on factors, elements and concepts to consider for a design analysis of architecture books. Then, it makes three case studies, the main case being the influential S,M,L,XL (1995), monograph by architect Rem Koolhaas and his Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) made in partnership with graphic designer Bruce Mau. The two other shorter analysis address books inspired by the first case: FARMAX: Excursions in Density, from MVRDV (1998), and Yes is More: an archicomic on architectural evolution (2009), from Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Through comparing the similarities and divergences between those three books, the dissertation seeks to highlight relevant aspects of professional and cultural dynamics internal to the architecture discipline in contemporary times.

Electronic media have lagged behind their paper progenitors in the clear, usable display of large bodies of information. New visual languages have been created for information display which exploit the computer's unique ability to render dynamic and three-dimensional typography. These languages demonstrate that the use of three dimensional form, expressive movement, visual focus and layering, in harmony with human perceptual abilities, improve navigation and contextual understanding of complex written documents. This thesis shows that graphic displays can be combined with physical interfaces to create interactions with purely typographic information that are rich, tactile and humane.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to explore the &ldquo
axis of innumerable relationships&rdquo
of the book which Jorge Luis Borges touches upon. In doing this, it deals with the questions of &ldquo
whats&rdquo
, &ldquo
whos&rdquo
, &ldquo
whens&rdquo
and &ldquo
wheres&rdquo
of the reading activity. While scrutinizing these aspects of reading, the main concern is to reach the &ldquo
whys&rdquo
and &ldquo
hows&rdquo
of it. Referring to Roger Chartier&rsquo
s definition of reading, there are three main components of this activity, as the content of the book, the material form of the book and the practice itself and they are aimed to be analyzed in detail. In this context, the questions of &ldquo
wheres&rdquo
and &ldquo
whens&rdquo
and their various answers create an intertwined area of history of reading and history of architecture. Within this theoretical framework, the scope of the thesis is shaped by Peter Greenaway&rsquo
s cinematography. The questions of &ldquo
who reads/writes what book&rdquo
, &ldquo
where and when&rdquo
are searched in the director&rsquo
s three films
The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover (1989), Prospero'
s Books (1991) and The Pillow Book (1996) by devoting one chapter to each film. Accordingly, the question of &ldquo
who&rdquo
orients the study to the bodies of the books/readers/writers, and those of &ldquo
where&rdquo
and &ldquo
when&rdquo
to architectural history. In connection to the director&rsquo
s multidisciplinary interests, the thesis seeks to trace how this topic is intertwined not only with history of architecture but also with the history of art and literature. Hence, it is an attempt to utilize Greenaway&rsquo
s cinematography as a tool to juxtapose the two/three dimensional representations of the book, the body and the spaces onto each other.

Abstract:
This is a study of a mixed-use project on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. The city of Washington has a unique sense of spaciousness and visual coherence as a result of the plan established tor the city by L'Entant. The 20th Century with the advent of the automobile and highrise construction techniques, has changed the conception of Washington from that envisioned by L’Enfant. The overlapping of radial and gridiron street systems has also created some conflicts within the city. During President Kennedy’s administration the government undertook the redevelopment of Pennsylvania Avenue. The goals and objectives of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation have influenced the program that was established for this project. The second major factor behind this project is the desire to create a building flexible enough to accept change gracefully. ln an urban context the ability to provide for "choice, change and growth"¹ allows a building to adapt to the inevitable transformations which occur around it.

Magrill, Barry Stephen. "A 'commerce of taste' in pattern books of Anglican church architecture in Canada 1867 - 1914." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/844.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the construction of Anglican churches in Canada in the period between 1867 and 1914. During this period settlement and economic expansion occurred alongside new political arrangements and consciousness that involved religious observance and debate. The building of churches became an important site of architectural and cultural formation in part due to the circulation of pattern books and the development of print media. At its broadest level, this thesis assesses the influence of church building across the Confederation in the constitution of social economy and attitude, particularly around ideas of collective identity. Consequently the focus is the analysis of the effects of transatlantic and transcontinental exchanges of ideas of design taste on a representative selection of churches built over the protracted period of Confederation. To this end, the thesis examines the importation of pattern books of architecture, particularly those illustrating popular Neo-Gothic church designs from Britain and the United States. It demonstrates how print media not only influenced architects, builders and committees charged with ecclesiastical construction but also consolidated architectural practice and constrained the fashioning of an autonomous national architectural idiom. The thesis maintains a perspective of the very diversity of ethnic, cultural and political allegiance experienced across Canada that contested the apparent dominance of British imperial authority and colonial regulation. The case studies of Anglican churches re-present larger economic and socio-cultural trends subsequently contested by comparative cases of Roman Catholic, Non-Conformist and even Jewish structures that underscore the complex interchange of ideas and interests. They reveal the use of supposedly hegemonic taste in church design to register the presence of other denominations and religious groups in the formation of Canadian society. The thesis shows how debates about the design of churches in the evolving nation of Canada was integral to the ongoing definition of wider taste in architecture, to the development of local and regional economy, and to communal identity. These processes reflected the new spatial geographies and imagined maps of culture enabled by the commercial production, circulation and consumption of print media such as church pattern books.

Abstract:
In an education it is necessary to re-evaluate those principles which are the foundation of how one learns. Only by challenging these basic principles is it possible to prevent stagnation and to cultivate discoveries. The discoveries of this work focus on the architectural object/thing and fundamentally how it is conceived, constructed, and thought about. This work challenges the previous education by not relying on a program, building type, human needs or context. The work attempts to apprehend and understand a basic notion about architecture. The premise is that exploration of an architectural element will lead to thoughtfully about concerns which were previously believed to be ‘generators.’

Abstract:
This thesis proposes as topic of research the hypothetic triad formed by Architecture, Science-fiction and the Comic-books. The intention is multidisciplinary, researching inner relationships and demonstrating the potential within the whole trinomial scenario, as a method of understands the current fluctuations in the architectural practice. At the same time, the study was focused to develop and apply transversal skills directed towards the others components of the triad, providing i.e., useful concepts from architecture to science fiction and/or to comic-books. All the relationships founded are dynamic within the triad, and can be grouped into two types, defined in this thesis as "elastic" or "plastic" ones, in a metaphoric but methodological analogy of the two types of collision in physics. “Elastic” actions grouped individual manifestations, developed as internal problem from each disciplines of the triad, with little -or zero- impact on counterparties used as a reference. These cases, with theoretical and pedagogical utilities, were the most frequently examples found in this research, and presented as potential interdisciplinary backgrounds of experimentation. “Plastic” actions grouped binomial and/or trinomial manifestations that containing fusion intentions. Those examples are few, especially when looking from architecture and then focus to the other(s) component(s) of the triad. The opposite case often happens; i.e., throughout history, directors of science fiction films -and also many comics artist- have used buildings, architectural spaces or a fragmented architectural concepts as an important component of his works. The methodologies was developed along nine study cases, divided into two classes: those that develop specific disciplinary knowledge (about specifically science fiction or comic books, out of architectural traditional background), and those in which at least a binomial relationship between concepts exists (architecture vs. science fiction, or architecture vs. comic books, or even comic books vs. science fiction). The first type of relationships refers researches about comics and science fiction as disciplines, focused on its artistic form, philosophy, styles, techniques and tools. These researches were indispensable for the development of the rest of cases, especially those leads to find new links with the architectural project. The second type of relationships have been investigated to generate a complete discourse, both analytical and documentary, based on hybrid between the components of the triad, but understanding the potential of the relationships -binomial or trinomialestablished, and focused with broader perspectives (multidisciplinary ones) from the architectural field. The conclusions reinforce the principal hypothesis; most of the hybrid manifestations found from architectural discipline and related to comic-books and/or science-fiction, generally come from professionals, sectors, groups or movements that rather than trying to build something “real”, use the projection tools as a means to convey theories and concepts, or simply communicate their own "architectural messages", using hybrid languages that derived from the multidisciplinary characteristics of the trinomial. The huge potential in this thesis refers to the alternative visions about concept of innovation and creativity resulting from any “merging condition” between artistic disciplines, potential which been objectified from architecture is measurable and feasible, with processes that involve thinking and the practical level of future implementation. These actions would achieve its best benefits working as "toolboxes", new alternatives for communicating architectural languages

This thesis looks at select aspects of culture in the architecture of a Gothic city, Prague, Czechoslovakia, a Renaissance villa, the Rotonda and a Baroque church, San Andrea del Quirinale. It also looks at the number of ways man is represented in the architecture of the Church and Piazza of San Pietro in Rome through scale, proportion and geometry. Thirdly, it shows the development of my own buildings and objects, inspired by my study of the past.

Abstract:
Each and every material has certain inherent characteristics. When successfully evaluated for these characteristics a material’s true spirit becomes clear. Only when a material is completely understood can it be used properly. It is through the sensitive use of materials that architecture becomes rich. When considering materials, several issues come to bear. What "work" do they do? How do the materials interact most harmoniously? How do the materials touch? Do they need an intermediate material? How do they begin? End? To what level are their details taken? A whole world of consideration becomes apparent. The answers to these questions become an operational language through which design can occur. This language when applied to the built environment then becomes a structural language.

Abstract:
The thesis contains a series of ideas & conclusions: The introductory statement suggests four criteria for the pursuit of producing good architecture. These criteria are not in the realm of problem solving. But rather address issues of the heart & mind. It is through a struggle with these measures that architecture becomes true and encompasses a realization larger than the problems at hand. It is only then that architecture exists in a continuum across time. The projects in this book make a meager attempt to begin to understand a pedagogy for spirit. responsibility. making & judgement.

Abstract:
Through an analogical process, this thesis explores the concept of transformation as it affords opportunities for order and structure in architecture. Beginning with the square as the seed from which the projects develop, orthogonal grids are employed as a means for developing ordering geometries as form-giving structures. A historical reference, deriving structure and form from a square grid instantiates development of the theme. Having examined some conditions of transformation in architecture, the work turns to a consideration of some personal explorations of transformation that may be of use in future architectural undertakings. The consequent forms are not intended to justify the particular transformational grammars; rather they are to be taken as models for future development.

Abstract:
Every architect’s work is a set of conditions which, through various relations, may add frequently does have a significant influence on all who participate in the built environment. At the same time, both architects and their work are constantly exposed to various changing relations. When one considers the network of those mutual influences of which an architect and his environment are elements, “form” may be seen as the positioning of an object within a network of conditions and their relations. This network includes visual characteristics of an object, imposed by the architect, and those independent of him, which are culturally conditioned. Such a network constitutes what is understood by “form” in this project. Among visual relations, I have chosen to recognize for example rhythm, contrast, balance, proportions and transparency. The culturally implied (given) relations are, for example, ownership, use, tradition, fashion. All these relations, imposed by an architect and implied by a culture, reveal only a small fraction of this relational network, of which I have consciously chosen to consider only a few. Within this framework, the term “function” would describe a momentary suspension of the dynamics of the network of relations. It is called momentary because all of the elements are in contrast change. Consequently, so are their relations with other elements and, therefore, the overall aspect of the form. Function allows the “freezing” of the network in order to make the observation and critique of the object possible. Such observation can be performed only within certain imposed boundaries, since the entire framework, and consequently, both form and function, are limitless in their nature. Those boundaries reveal certain aspects of the object which are constituted from groups of considerations, which in this project are called “conditions”. Some of the “conditions” are later mentioned in the book a plan, elevation, shape. Since all of them resemble each other in their tendency towards balance, different parts of the project perform in a similar way.

It is the intention of this thesis to present not only a visual exploration of a design problem, but also to discuss the obviously dialectic relation of the two for me essential basic elements of architecture: type and topos. This thesis stands as a record of my accumulated experiences and as a description of a personal approach to working with architectural problems.
