Abstract:
The explosive growth of software systems with both size and complexity results in the recognised need of techniques to combat architectural degradation. Reflexion Modelling is a method commonly used for Software Architectural Consistency Checking (SACC). However, the steps needed to utilise the method involve manual mapping, which could become tedious depending on the system's size. Recently, machine learning has been showing promising results outperforming other approaches. However, neither a comparison of different classifiers nor a comprehensive investigation of how to best pre-process source code has yet been performed. This thesis compares different classifier and their performance to the manual effort needed to train them and how different pre-processing settings affect their accuracy. The study can be divided into two areas: pre-processing and how large the manual mapping should be to achieve satisfactory performance. Across the three software systems used in this study, the overall best performing model, MaxEnt, achieved the following average results, accuracy 0.88, weighted precision 0.89 and weighted recall 0.88. SVM performed almost identically to MaxEnt. Furthermore, the results show that Naive-Bayes, the algorithm in recent related work approaches, performs worse than SVM and MaxEnt. The results yielded that the pre-processing that extracts packages and libraries, together with the feature representation method Bag-of-Words had the best performance. Furthermore, it was found that manual mapping of a minimum of ten files per concern is needed for satisfactory performance. The research results represent a further step towards automating code-to-architecture mappings, as required in reflexion modelling and similar techniques.

Abstract:
There has been no commonsense on how to identify problem domain concerns in architectural modeling of software systems. Even, there is no commonly accepted method for modeling the Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs) effectively associated with the architectural aspects in the solution domain. This thesis introduces the use of a Machine Learning (ML) method based on Support Vector Machines to relate NFRs to classified "
architectural concerns"
in an automated way. This method uses Natural Language Processing techniques to fragment the plain NFR texts under the supervision of domain experts. The contribution of this approach lies in continuously applying ML techniques against previously discovered &ldquo
NFR - architectural concerns&rdquo
associations to improve the intelligence of repositories for requirements engineering. The study illustrates a charted roadmap and demonstrates the automated requirements engineering toolset for this roadmap. It also validates the approach and effectiveness of the toolset on the snapshot of a real-life project.

Full text
Abstract:
There are both intuitive and theoretical bases to the notion that differences exist in the way in which architects and non architects construe their physical environment. Despite their procedural constraints, many previous studies have added empirical weight to this assumption. As it is most likely to be within the schools of architecture where the socialisation of professional values takes place, the thesis explores changes in the structure and content of architectural concepts and evaluations as a function of time spent in training. Further, the thesis considers the variation in architectural orientation amongst the students, and explores the adoption of school specific values. The study focusses on two schools of architecture, one university based, in the north of Britian, and one polytechnic based, in the south. A cross-sectional sample of fifteen students in each year of training were interviewed at both schools. Data were collected using the Multiple Sorting Procedure, an open-ended yet structured sorting technique, and analysed using Multidimensional Scalogram Analysis (MSA) and Smallest Space Analysis (SSA). The results demonstrate the development of architectural concepts from concrete tangible concepts, to more complex abstract ones. The students' evaluative judgements show both development with each year sampled, and school specific differences in the type of architecture preferred. Architectural evaluation is shown to be based upon architectural style. The students' judgements of the buildings, combined with their architectural 'heroes' allows the proposal of a model of stylistic orientation in architecture. Case studies indicate that the results derived from the Multiple Sorting Procedure accord well with the students' orientation in architecture; in the focus of their architectural interests, in their evaluative judgements, and in the type of architecture they design. The architectural, educational and methodological implications are discussed.

The inflexibility and banality of the architecture this paradigm typically delivers begs for exploration of the feasibility of innovative construction technologies. Technologies that influence both form and technique such as prefabrication of modular elements, utilization of CAD/CAM techniques to mill customized parts and pliable materials (i.e. plastics) crafted to achieve dynamic forms. More engaging, flexible learning environments could be realized that significantly increase the performance of the architecture, both formally and ecologically, as well as ennobling students.

Abstract:

The problem this research study aims to address is the development of architectural values in graduate architecture students and faculty. This study explores the relationship between academic values (architectural concepts) and practical skillsets (architectural competencies) within architectural education. It also investigates the relationship between student and faculty value priorities in regards to the profession. Conducted at the University of Virginia, School of Architecture, the study utilized the administration of the researcher-made Architectural Values Inventory (AVI), based on Rokeach's (1973) Value Survey. The principal component analysis, used to evaluate reliability and validity proved, the AVI to be both valid and reliable surfacing six significant components. The canonical correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between architectural concepts and competencies. The Goodman-Kruskal gamma rendered a relationship between students and faculty on only five of the 32 architectural values, subsequently showing little to no correlation between students and faculty on the whole. These research findings have the potential to influence areas of architectural education such as accreditation, curriculum development, professional development, and professional practice.

Abstract:

This thesis, “Natural Ventilation in Buildings -Architectural concepts, consequences and possibilities”, is the result of a PhD study financed by Hydro Aluminium/Wicona, The Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The work was carried out at the Department of Architectural Design, History and Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art at NTNU in the period January 2000 to March 2003.

The study has been conducted in close collaboration with fellow researchers Bjørn J. Wachenfeldt and Tor Arvid Vik. Chapter 2 “Principles and elements of natural ventilation” is in its entirety written by the three of us together.

The main objectives of this work have been to identify and investigate the architectural consequences and possibilities of natural ventilation in office and school buildings in Northern Europe. Case studies and interviews with architects and HVAC consultants have been the most central “research instruments” in achieving this. Three buildings have been studied in detail. These are the GSW Headquarters in Germany, the B&O Headquarters in Denmark, and the Mediå Primary School in Norway. In addition, a larger set of buildings has been used to substantiate the findings.

The most important findings of this work are that:

- utilisation of natural ventilation in buildings has architectural consequences as well as possibilities.

- natural ventilation primarily affects the facades, the roof/silhouette and the layout and organisation of the interior spaces.

- the ventilation principle applied (single-sided, cross- or stack ventilation) together with the nature of the supply and extract paths, i.e. whether they are local or central, are of key importance for the architectural consequences and possibilities.

- designing a naturally ventilated building is more difficult than designing a similar but mechanically ventilated building. An interdisciplinary approach from the initial stages of design is mandatory for achieving successful natural ventilation concepts.

Abstract:
'The Concerto Inn' is a work of fiction that tells the story of two sisters, each of whom kills a person she loves, each of whom is on the run. The novel traces the strand of betrayal and violence that Madeleine and Isobel enact, and in its conclusion makes it clear that the two stories are the same story repeated. 'The architect's dream - project manual for The Concerto Inn' presents itself as the workbook of the Architect who has been commissioned by the elusive author of 'The Concerto Inn' to design and construct a library. It stands as an endnote, a companion piece to the novel and is part architectural treatise and part ficto-criticism. Infiltrated by a number of different voices in different registers. it considers aspects of narrative structure using the language and metaphors of architecture.

Abstract:
The goal of business modelling is the design, analysis, and simulation of an enterprise's architectural structures and their information technology components. To comprehensively support business modelling, an appropriate modelling environment with adequate visualization mechanisms is required. Such an environment may handle model information in a flexible, yet expressive way and support substitution, documentation, validation and dynamic analysis of models as well as model visualization and alternative representations.
We have developed a business modelling approach which is based on the formalism of extended, colored Petri nets. To support and validate our approach, we have engineered the Macrotec environment. Macrotec meets a list of requirements we have identified as crucial for the quality of a comprehensive modelling environment. It is conceived as a set of various tools which are seamlessly integrated. Our experience with Macrotec suggests that our concepts and environment substantially facilitate business modelling.

Architects use concepts about space to solve problems and to form designs. A design concept is the manifestation of the basic instability of our mental performance: it is a makeshift that provides general direction for exploration. In synthesis architects explore concepts by inventing transitions that conclude to the description of artifacts. This study suggests that the process of synthesis, which is an act of human imagination, can be approached by the means of a calculus, as calculation. Taking into account the nature of design concepts and practices, as well as the developments in the field of shape computation, the study explains why and how computational methods can be applied in the process of synthesis of architectural form. Through a theoretical analysis, and actual design paradigms, it shows that shape computation can undertake conceptual and execution tasks in the studio.

Abstract:
Music, as a performing art, transports us to distant moments and spaces than those we are in the present time. A hundred musicians playing Brucknerâ s Scherzo on Symphony No. 7 could make us feel emotionally moved; it could make us feel joy, anger, anguish, delight, peace, fear, freedom. Music has the ability to change our mood, to make us go through a series of feelings. This, I believe, has to do with how it involves you in it. Arthur Schopenhauer also says: â The effect of music on the mind, so penetrating, so immediate, so unfailing, and also the after-effect that sometimes follows it, consisting in a specially sublime frame of mind, are explained by the passive nature of hearing just describedâ 3. This penetrating component of music, so immediate, of which Schopenhauer speaks, is how the Sublime is experienced through it. Music could even elevate the soul of those who are most open to perceive it. What is that â sublimeâ moment that happens when you are listening to a live orchestra and get moved by the experience? Are we capable of achieving that moment through the use of architectural elements alone? I believe the answer is yes. There is more to the moment than just the music itself, and that a â sublimeâ moment can be experienced in many contexts. There are elements that are common to this experience, primarily the presence of the Four Classical Elements. With this in mind, I came to the idea that by including Air, Fire, Earth and Water into my project, then I would be a step closer to having the users go through a sublime experience.

Abstract:

The continuous and aggressive dimensional miniaturization ofthe conventional complementary-metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)architecture has been the main impetus for the vast growth ofIC industry over the past decades. As the CMOS downscalingapproaches the fundamental limits, unconventional materials andnovel device architectures are required in order to guaranteethe ultimate scaling in device dimensions and maintain theperformance gain expected from the scaling. This thesisinvestigates both unconventional materials for the gate stackand the channel and a novel notched-gate device architecture, with the emphasis on the challenging issues in processintegration.

High-κ gate dielectrics will become indispensable forCMOS technology beyond the 65-nm technology node in order toachieve a small equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) whilemaintaining a low gate leakage current. HfO2and Al2O3as well as their mixtures are investigated assubstitutes for the traditionally used SiO2in our MOS transistors. These high-κ filmsare deposited by means of atomic layer deposition (ALD) for anexcellent control of film composition, thickness, uniformityand conformality. Surface treatments prior to ALD are found tohave a crucial influence on the growth of the high-κdielectrics and the performance of the resultant transistors.Alternative gate materials such as TiN and poly-SiGe are alsostudied. The challenging issues encountered in processintegration of the TiN or poly-SiGe with the high-k are furtherelaborated. Transistors with TiN or poly-SiGe/high-k gate stackare successfully fabricated and characterized. Furthermore,proof-of-concept strained-SiGe surface-channel pMOSFETs withALD high-κ dielectrics are demonstrated. The pMOSFETs witha strained SiGe channel exhibit a higher hole mobility than theuniversal hole mobility in Si. A new procedure for extractionof carrier mobility in the presence of a high density ofinterface states found in MOSFETs with high-κ dielectricsis developed.

A notched-gate architecture aiming at reducing the parasiticcapacitance of a MOSFET is studied. The notched gate is usuallyreferred to as a local thickness increase of the gatedielectric at the feet of the gate above the source/drainextensions. Two-dimensional simulations are carried out toinvestigate the influence of the notched gate on the static anddynamic characteristics of MOSFETs. MOSFETs with optimizednotch profile exhibit a substantial enhancement in the dynamiccharacteristics with a negligible effect on the staticcharacteristics. Notched-gate MOSFETs are also experimentallyimplemented with the integration of a high-κ gatedielectric and a poly-SiGe/TiN bi-layer gate electrode.

Key words:CMOS technology, MOSFET, high-κ, gatedielectric, ALD, surface pre-treatment, metal gate, poly-SiGe,strained SiGe, surface-channel, buried-channel, notchedgate.

Diehl, Andreas. "Software architecture for data storage concepts within future mobile telecommunication systems." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/332.

Full text
Abstract:
In current mobile telecommunication networks, databases and the subscriber data is distributed among multiple network domains and database systems. The heterogeneous data storage concept is based on the permanent evolution of the mobile networks and the support of different kinds of network technologies. Dependent on the particular network domain and the dedicated technology, distributed subscriber data has to be accessed via specialised protocols. This thesis proposes a novel software architecture for the next generation profile register (NGPR) - an approach to provide subscriber information using a logically centralised register for subscriber data from several mobile network domains. The NGPR subscriber data model supports a network-independent layer that references to different kinds of network-specific data (such as subscribed services, user related data and run-time data). Appropriate adapters ensure the reusage of network-independent data for several specific mobile core domains or administrative systems. This thesis includes an UMTS interoperability concept for the SS7 (signaling system no. 7) and IP-based domains by utilising the service-oriented architecture (SOA). SOA concepts provide the flexibility to integrate different network-specific domains by data services. The data services (based on web services technology) are supported in a conventional way and by a binary mode in order to improve performance for the telecommunication networks. The service framework of the NGPR manages data services in general and links requests from the mobile domains to relevant subsets of subscriber data. NGPR data services support network-specific and generic interfaces that are proposed within concepts of the next generation networks or UMTS release 6. Based on SOA, the NGPR architecture provides subscriber data convergence and simplified data access. Therefore, several specialised and generic network domains can be directly supported by the network-independent layer of the NGPR. Especially administrative systems and network nodes of closed domains are supposed to take advantage of the interoperability concept and the converged data of the NGPR.

The discourse of architecture has been greatly affected by the revolutionary ideologies introduced by the rise of Cubism earlier in this century. Cubism had an impact on all the arts; there was a particular affinity between the ideas of construction in Cubism and those of architecture resulting in a closer relationship between art and architecture in this century than in preceding centuries. Three of the four architects discussed in this thesis have had explicit interest in the visual arts; Le Corbusier himself was an established artist. Examining this twentieth century phenomenon has been the task of this thesis, and in particular the concept of layering found in Cubist works and its influence in the formation of new devices of spatial expression. Devices, such as fragmentation, motion and multiple interpretations found in Cubist layering were incentives for architects to investigate the application of the concepts in architecture. I suggest that the fusion of the concept of layering with that of space resulted in a new concept, "spatial layering". Some architectural examples dating after the period following the first war are examined for evidence of these influences, and relationships between them are discussed. Finally, conclusions are proposed regarding the characteristics of the concept of spatial layering as a continuing paradigm of space in architecture.

Abstract:
This paper proposes an investigation into the spaces of musical performance and its relationship with the music presented on these, with special focus on contemporary classical music. This proposal is justified from the verification of a dichotomy between the architectural design of these spaces, and the music that presented on them in a repertoire of mostly consolidated in the late nineteenth century. This dissociation is particularly interesting given that, until the advent of modern vanguards of the beginning of the twentieth century, music and performance spaces formed a group in line with your time. From this investigation, some examples of spaces facing the contemporary music and its unique characteristics were analyzed, and considerations about the current state of these, drawn. The approach chosen, however, was not the description and analysis from the architectural, technical or social point of view; it was decided by an investigation that relates the development of music itself and its relationship with the space where it is played as how to strengthen this link and identify the points of intersection between the two disciplines. To do so, the work began with some examples of recently built concert halls in the Brazilian context: The Sala São Paulo (1999) and the Auditório Ibirapuera (2005), followed with an investigation of the music commonly presented in these. From the verification of this music, it was sought to characterize the momentum of architectural auditorium, with regard to spatial organization and social setting of these. Two spaces were taken as example, the Palais Garnier (1875) in Paris and the Festspielhaus (1876) in Bayreuth, because they represent, each in its way, one facet of this type. Finally there was a comparison between the music presented in these spaces and contemporary music, which reinforces the dichotomy observed and preliminarily identifying the beginning of the twentieth century as the moment of transformation of the direct relationship between architecture and music. To prove this claim, was held a retrospective of where music had preeminent importance, and in parallel, we tried to address their own concepts of music and architecture, seeking to create elements for understanding the work of musicians and architects. These concepts are essential to understanding not only of these spaces, but also of general relations between different aspects of social life of his time, of crucial importance for understanding the dimension of rupture reported. Through this review, sometwhat descriptive and linear, reflections of the reasons for the changing of the relationship between architecture and music in Modernism, and the consequences of this fact to both disciplines were made. It was also discussed aspects of contemporary music and architecture in places where it was sought an integration. Finally, the conclusions sought, from interviews with professionals and specialized literature of both disciplines, to reflect on the future of this relationship and the role of the architect in producing spaces for contemporary music. It is noteworthy that the literature that addresses this relationship is extremely scarce; this work, therefore, adopted a more general profile and broad spec- trum, rather than a specific point on a specificity of this relationship, as the beginning of a attempt to fill this void of literature.

Frizell, Hazel Elizabeth. "Representations of specific concerns of the women's liberation movement in British feminist art 1970-1978." Thesis, Kingston University, 2009. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/20225/.

Abstract:
Taking the Women's Weekend Conference held at Ruskin College, Oxford as my starting point, this thesis identifies and critically investigates the representation of specific concerns of the Women's Liberation Movement in British feminist artistic practice between 1970 and 1978. These concerns relate in particular to the personal experience of childraising and domesticity, namely, loss of identity and issues surrounding marriage, domestic labour, childcare, motherhood and female isolation. Approached as a reclamation project based upon the examination of feminist publications, feminist archives, the papers of the Women's Liberation Movement, and oral histories, this thesis establishes the importance of personal issues that were central to the politics of experience adopted by the Women's Liberation Movement. Through a study of the work of feminist artists aligned to the Women's Liberation Movement, this thesis explores their engagement with these issues and the differing ways in which they sought to represent and express them through their work. This thesis argues that their work was - and remains largely unacknowledged - for its representation of liberation politics and its role in raising consciousness of female oppression. However, the more recent publication of feminist and feminist art critiques have provided important insights with which to revisit and re-assess the work. Locating the work within a micro-history of socialist feminism, the research focuses on the work of Feministo, in particular its three founding members, Su , Richardson, Monica Ross and Kate Walker and participants Tricia Davies and Cathy Nicholson. It also examines the work of Alexis Hunter, Pen Dalton, Mair Davies, Margaret Harrison, Elona Bennett and the Hackney Flashers, with particular reference to Michael Ann Mullen. The films of Sue Crockford, the Camden Film Collective, Wages for Housework Campaign and The London Women's Film Group as well as the Berwick Street Collective are also discussed. All of these artists and groups were affiliated to the Women's Liberation Movement and fought oppression by raising awareness of domestic issues through their work. The influence of American feminist art, avant-garde film and socially aware conceptual art is assessed as well as the impetus of collective action alongside the adoption of craft methods in challenging modernist art practice and contributing to an emerging post-modem era. Acknowledging a recent interest in domestic issues, in craft, and the importance of collective artistic strategies associated in the 1990s in Britain with the phenomenon of the 'YBA's (Young British Artists), this thesis proposes a reclamation and re-assessment of the role and work of the artists associated with the Women's Liberation Movement in Britain.

Abstract:
In Norrland, forests make up the biggest area of land, where different activities and actors exist in the same locations. Conflicts arise when different actors and agendas clash, making it hard to have a sustainable co-existence in the forest. Through forest research and other initiatives, new methods and strategies are being explored to make co-existence possible. Currently there is a gap between the research and its end user, as well as a dislocation of research facilities where most are located along the coast instead of the inland and the forest. Can architecture be a tool to raise awareness about nature and forests, making it a common concern? The proposal is to create a forest research center in the forest in the inland, where actors work and activities take place. The building combines the different users, creating a space where researchers and forest owners can share knowledge and experiences, and work towards a sustainable management without conflicts. Through the program of the building, the public get access to knowledge and become involved in the politics and management of the forest. The design explores and exposes the possibilities of wood, where incremental design showcases the impact of nature.

Bantegnie, Brice. "Eliminating propositional attitudes concepts." Thesis, Paris, Ecole normale supérieure, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ENSU0020.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I argue for the elimination of propositional attitudes concepts. In the first chapter I sketch the landscape of eliminativism in contemporary philosophy of mind and cognitive science. There are two kinds of eliminativism: eliminative materialism and concept eliminativism. One can further distinguish between folk and science eliminativism about concepts: whereas the former says that the concept should be eliminated from our folk theories, the latter says that the concept should be eliminated form our scientific theories. The eliminativism about propositional attitudes concepts I defend is a species of the latter. In the next three chapters I put forward three arguments for this thesis. I first argue that the interventionist theory of causation cannot lend credit to our claims of mental causation. I then support the thesis by showing that propositional attitudes concepts aren't natural kind concepts because they cross-cut the states of the modules posited by the thesis of massive modularity, a thesis which, I contend, is part of our best research-program. Finally, my third argument rests on science eliminativism about the concept of mental content. In the two last chapters of the dissertation I first defend the elimination of the concept of mental content from the success argument, according to which as psychologists produce successful science while using the concept of mental content, the concept should be conserved. Then, I dismiss an alternative way of eliminating the concept, that is, the way taken by proponents of extended cognition, by refuting what I take to be the best argument for extended cognition, namely, the system argument

Abstract:
It goes without saying that cellular users of today have an insatiable appetite for bandwidth and data. Data-intensive applications, such as video on demand, online gaming and video conferencing, have gained prominence. This, coupled with recent innovations in the mobile network such as LTE/4G, poses a unique challenge to network operators in how to extract the most value from their deployments all the while reducing their Total Cost of Operations(TCO). To this end, a number of enhancements have been proposed to the ”conventional” LTE mobile network. Most of these recognize the monolithic and non-elastic nature of the mobile backend and propose complimenting core functionality with concepts borrowed from Software Defined Networking (SDN). In this thesis we shall attempt to explore some existing options within the LTE standard to mitigate large traffic churns. We will then review some SDN-enabled alternatives, and attempt to derive a proof based critique on their merits and drawbacks.

The thesis proposes a mode of designing that emphasizes the active role that the physical context, including its embedded cultural implications and poetic ideas, might play in the process of architectural design. A successful architectural project in that sense would not only be visually related to its context in a meaningful way, but its form giving conceptual framework would be part of an idea about the site and its relation to the context. Three different modes of architectural inquiry mutually inform each other. While the discussion of contextual theory, namely Contextualism and Phenomenology, seeks to ground the making of reflected contextual references in its underlying cultural and philosophical value systems, the design component not only tested contextual design strategies, but, more importantly, shaped the mode of the theoretical inquiry. Together with case studies that cover a broad spectrum of different contexts and their architectural responses, they identified the critical issue of balancing between the normative urban space and the site specific components.

Abstract:
People trying to understand, develop and maintain software have faced greater challenges as the complexity of software systems has increased. These challenges include the difficulty of cleanly separating different intertwined parts of a system, or relating parts of the system spread across many modules. This makes it difficult to neatly identify an area of interest, which in turn makes it difficult to understand or edit that area. The ability to separate these areas of interest, called concerns, into their own modules has been shown to improve the situation. Several approaches have been developed to enable this separation: aspect-oriented programming allows program code to be divided into smaller modules that better match areas of interest; reverse engineering tools help programmers extract information from an existing system; requirements traceability tools track individual requirements through the development process. This thesis describes a technique that works in a wide variety of circumstances. This technique allows users to create simple diagrams that describe the concern and then annotate this diagram with query expressions which link the diagram to related development artefacts like source code or documents. This research has used the tool in a set of common scenarios and compared the results to those achieved using other approaches.

In the world today, Concert Halls for Symphony Orchestra and Choir are generally â enclosed performance spacesâ that are completely cut-off from the outside: Whether itâ s a time of daylight or moonlight, rain or shine, summer or winter, spring or autumn, the environment within remains the same all the time. I asked the question: â What if a concert hall offers views outside?â To be more specific, the question is: â What if a concert hall offers views outside through the use of glass, along with other building materials, despite the fact that glass offers lower reflectivity and lower transmission loss for lower frequencies of sound, compared to certain other materials?â Hence the title: Interaction of Low Frequency Sound with Glass and other Building Materials in the Design of a Concert Hall for Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

Abstract:
The integration of mobile and sensor technologies, and the design and implementation of different web-enabled visualizations to support inquiry learning in different educational scenarios encompass the main research efforts carried out in this thesis. These challenges are addressed from the perspectives of mobile and web engineering, visualization and technology-enhanced learning (TEL). Thus, the main research question investigated in this thesis relates to the identification of the main features that can guide the design and implementation of web and mobile applications to support inquiry learning in different contexts. This thesis consists of a collection of four publications that describe the research efforts conducted during a period of three years in relation to the Learning Ecology through Science with Global Outcomes (LETS GO) research project. The research questions investigated and the implemented technological solutions reported in these publications are closely related to the main goals and challenges of this thesis. The design and implementation of the proposed software system was guided, deployed and refined having the following aspects in mind: (1) System Requirements and Architectural Design, (2) System Implementation and Deployment, and (3) System Assessment and Web Usability Testing. During the three years of development efforts, three software prototypes were implemented utilizing service-oriented approaches. These efforts have been tested with more than 200 users in connection to several trials that took place during this period. The user trials allowed testing the software application throughout three development iterations on authentic settings, while new requirements continuously emerged in these activities. This process made it possible to verify that user requirements were adequately addressed while satisfying their needs. The outcomes of these activities led to the design and implementation of a system architecture that relies on service-oriented approaches and open standards. The main outcomes of this thesis are presented in the form of Architectural Concepts, as they can be used to guide the design and implementation of web and mobile applications to support inquiry learning. The idea behind architectural concepts is to provide a set of tools for supporting the overall life cycle of a software development process, such as requirements, design, implementation, deployment and testing while coping with rapid changes of technological implementations. Some of the architectural concepts identified in this thesis correspond well with the kind of support that inquiry-learning activities require. They provide solid foundations in terms of possibilities to tackle the requirements for supporting inquiry learning in a flexible manner.

In the decision-making process of urban development projects, decision-makers and urban designers work collectively as a) decision-makers make decisions of urban development based on the evaluation of urban morphology, b) urban designers visualize design decisions given by decision-makers with 3D urban morphology and produce development proposals after certain rounds of iteration; A proposal involves designing 3D urban morphology, aka the collection of building typologies (parcel level), on a specific site. Due to the high costs of visualizing massive building geometries manually, the current decision-making workflow does not allow adequate iteration before the implementation of the proposal. To reduce the cost of manual modeling work by designers, rule-based approaches (like ESRI's CityEngine) generate 3D urban morphology from spatial geometries via rules. However, the limitations of creating rules are the bottleneck of popularizing rule-based approaches in professional practice. This research explores using machine learning pipelines to synthesize novel 3D morphology from urban design precedents intuitively, solving the above bottleneck. The resulting pipeline learns spatial data and 2D rendering images for two major parts: 1) to extract 2D building typology images from an aerial rendering image of urban morphology, and 2) to predict spatial building data from an extracted image and a spatial parcel geometry. This pipeline promotes the process of creating rules, allowing both urban designers to create visualization and decision-makers to evaluate urban development intuitively.

This project proposes a new building for a concert venue on Södermalm in Stockholm. An area especially affected by the current trend that venues for experiencing contemporary music live are being shut down and driven away from the inner city, due to everything from complaining neighbours to making room for more profitable businesses. The idea for the project sprung out of the sudden closing of the venue Debaser Medis, whose facilities was removed when the building it was situated in was to undergo major renovations. The purpose with Varvet was to create a new venue in a freestanding building, independent from other businesses, and giving contemporary music a more articulated place in the city. The project also includes the re-purposing of an adjacent existing building to facilitate a cafe and bar as well as functions supporting the daily business of the venue such as offices, practice rooms and a small workshop.

The research field of this work is Industrial Engineering. This paper presents a study made to improve tomorrow’s automobile cabin habitability. It is focused on showing the influence on car-interior design by today’s home-interior design. The objective of this work is to propose a tool intended to help automobile designers to introduce home architectural construction principles into the car’s cabin design to improve its habitability. In our experimental phase we adopted principles of the method of analysis of the joint tendencies such as mappings and boards of categorization. This step showed that car designers have been increasingly using the home architectural construction principles on the car’s cabin conception design. Our research took into account the opinion of experts in both areas: architecture and design. In this way, we can be certain that the home and the automobile share the same criteria of habitability. We could also confirm that home architectural principles have a positive impact on the improvement of the habitability criteria in space design of the automobile’s cabin. This work opens a research line to analyze the influence of different areas in automobile design, such as aeronautics and electronics. This study can also show the inverse perspective of how car design can eventually have an impact on the future home design

Towards a Poetics of Light; The Conceits of Light is a critical quest to map associations between rhetorical figures, psychological defences and spatial tropes in an attempt to conceive a poetic design that enacts conceit. Light is an emblem which echoes with an abundance of representations in literature, history, art and architecture and parallels may be drawn between their resemblances however apparently remote. Love, knowledge, hope and creative passion mark turns in the threads that knot ideas and their representations together. Return of the Immortals, the final project in a series of works exploring these parallels and representations, gathers together a cascade of tropes to structure a spatial experience which culminates in The Conceits of Light.

In chapter one I explore how the line located is 'outside of architecture' (Ingraham), as a disciplinary boundary between art and architecture (Wigley), as a projection between concept, drawing and building (Evans), and positioned between the material and immaterial (Benjamin). These theories suggest that the line is a temporal and spatial condition, an exploration enriched by studies of the philosophical positions that consider lines in terms of 'becoming' (Grosz, Deleuze). While chapter one explores Paul Klee's theme, 'Taking a line for a walk', through theories which expand concepts of the line, chapters two to five examine in more detail the work of Paul Klee and another 1920's Bauhaus Preliminary Course teacher, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. In chapter two, the line is examined as a tool for mediation in formation processes and a volatile agent that acquires a variety of properties, according to Klee's terms, 'active', 'middle', or 'passive'. Chapter three discusses Klee's exploration of the line's materiality through its active function, temporal rhythm and the third dimension. Chapter four is concerned with Moholy- Nagy's understanding of the line's immateriality in his view architecture is defined in terms of spatial relationships and here the line acquires virtual, anticipatory and ambiguous properties. In chapter five, Moholy-Nagy's generative drawing for theatre production and the line's role in his filmic projections take the line from the two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional context analyzing the background of the line, as well as the line in a diagram and in film. If architecture is taken to be a form of spatial practice (Rendell) it is possible to consider it the location of interdisciplinary practice. Part II: Lines out of Architecture is constructed in parallel to Part I and comprises five projects, each of which demonstrate a practice-led approach to researching new ways of practicing the line in architecture. Taken together the chapters and the projects argue that the line plays a key role in interdisciplinary forms of practising space and that this occurs when a line is taken for a walk outside the architectural drawing. The theory-led and practice-led research work are in conversation with one another exploring the same themes through different research methods, in this way, the thesis performs a 'conversational walk'.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1995.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 141-145).
This thesis commences with the basic premise that Timurid Central Asia (which included the regions of Khorasan and Transoxania), with its monumental achievements in Urban Planning and Civic Architecture, beginning with the reign of Tamerlane (1346 - 1405); served as a literal source of inspiration for the urban form of Mughal cities. As an additional corollary to this premise, it puts forward the thesis that the formal similarities observed between the architecture of the Timurids and the Mughals were not purely coincidental; but were indeed the result of a conscious exchange of ideas and images in a varied number of ways. The Mughals seem to have essentially emulated the Timurids in terms of the basic grammar of their architectural creations, and the final product was always unique in terms of the extent, purity and the mix of constituent elements. This cross-cultural 'borrowing' seems to have become more direct and relatively refined when one considers developments in the realm of city planning; where to a large extent, there seems to have operated a 'stereo-typical' notion or model of the urban settlement - predominantly Timurid or deriving from Timurid precedents; which is thereafter applied and overlaid with 'Indianized' or 'Persianized' notions in order to develop the characteristics of the Mughal city. The first part of the thesis examines how pre-Timurid precedents could have contributed towards the conception of a Timurid Urban Model. The characteristics this model and its variations are subsequently discussed with reference to specific cases. The second part discusses correlations between the Timurid and Mughal city in terms of a matrix of political and social variables derived from conditions prevalent in Timurid and Mughal society. The third part of the research looks at factors or agents which may have caused the this cultural interchange to occour between the two cultures.

Adamis, A. "Liquid concepts : liquid architecture, the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and the films of David Lynch." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1411343/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores the nature and impact of liquid concepts with a particular focus on liquid architecture, dually interpreted through the thinking of Gilles Deleuze and the cinematic works of David Lynch. The text begins with a consideration of how architecture was until recently expected to be stable and solid. Following this, it introduces liquid concepts and what can be understood by this term, before discussing the stimuli that led to the expression of liquid thinking through liquid architecture. An introduction to the thinking of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari follows, with a selective focus placed on ideas of relevance to liquid concepts. The central part of the text discusses liquid architecture, mentioning several key figures within the movement, including Lars Spuybroek, Kas Oosterhuis and Marcos Novak. This is followed by the presentation of several projects, both those of other architects and the projects forming part of this design thesis. The latter section is concerned with the definition of cinematic space and its function, and the work of David Lynch. It considers connections between Lynch and liquid concepts, and presents relevant themes and tools that feature prominently in his films. The final part of the thesis is dedicated to a discussion of the Liquid House design project, exploring the influences on the design process of the various strands considered in this thesis, and in particular of the work of Deleuze and of Lynch, ultimately affirming that the project is liquid in its design approach. The text concludes that while liquid architecture is mostly concerned with matters relating to design, liquid concepts are about ways of thinking, and further, the current expressions of liquid architecture are not the full extent of the developments in architecture, which may be expected to become even more liquid.
