Full textThe problem this research study aims to address is the development of architectural values in graduate architecture students and faculty. This study explores the relationship between academic values (architectural concepts) and practical skillsets (architectural competencies) within architectural education. It also investigates the relationship between student and faculty value priorities in regards to the profession. Conducted at the University of Virginia, School of Architecture, the study utilized the administration of the researcher-made Architectural Values Inventory (AVI), based on Rokeach's (1973) Value Survey. The principal component analysis, used to evaluate reliability and validity proved, the AVI to be both valid and reliable surfacing six significant components. The canonical correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between architectural concepts and competencies. The Goodman-Kruskal gamma rendered a relationship between students and faculty on only five of the 32 architectural values, subsequently showing little to no correlation between students and faculty on the whole. These research findings have the potential to influence areas of architectural education such as accreditation, curriculum development, professional development, and professional practice.

ABSTRACT: History has a remarkable role in the building and growing of the city, as it has been shaping the elements that affect the territory in urban design, ensuring its continuity through space and time. The preservation of the historical city goes through a set of architectural rehabilitation interventions. The present work is about an ancient palace of the XIX century located at Rua do Benformoso near by Largo do Intendente in Lisbon. The old building interior was demolished remainig only the facade to be seen. The main goal of this work is to design a rehabilitation project with a musical and habitational program. It is intend to conceive a program that stimulates the experience of the space for socioculturally diferent people, providing harmony in their occupation through musical multiculturalism. The intention is to create peculiar spaces as well as the delimitation of public and private spaces through the elements of light, color, material and sound as the fundamental elements in the spatial perception in the process of architectural rehabilitation.

Full textThis thesis, “Natural Ventilation in Buildings -Architectural concepts, consequences and possibilities”, is the result of a PhD study financed by Hydro Aluminium/Wicona, The Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The work was carried out at the Department of Architectural Design, History and Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art at NTNU in the period January 2000 to March 2003.
The study has been conducted in close collaboration with fellow researchers Bjørn J. Wachenfeldt and Tor Arvid Vik. Chapter 2 “Principles and elements of natural ventilation” is in its entirety written by the three of us together.
The main objectives of this work have been to identify and investigate the architectural consequences and possibilities of natural ventilation in office and school buildings in Northern Europe. Case studies and interviews with architects and HVAC consultants have been the most central “research instruments” in achieving this. Three buildings have been studied in detail. These are the GSW Headquarters in Germany, the B&O Headquarters in Denmark, and the Mediå Primary School in Norway. In addition, a larger set of buildings has been used to substantiate the findings.
The most important findings of this work are that:
- utilisation of natural ventilation in buildings has architectural consequences as well as possibilities.
- natural ventilation primarily affects the facades, the roof/silhouette and the layout and organisation of the interior spaces.
- the ventilation principle applied (single-sided, cross- or stack ventilation) together with the nature of the supply and extract paths, i.e. whether they are local or central, are of key importance for the architectural consequences and possibilities.
- designing a naturally ventilated building is more difficult than designing a similar but mechanically ventilated building. An interdisciplinary approach from the initial stages of design is mandatory for achieving successful natural ventilation concepts.

Architects use concepts about space to solve problems and to form designs. A design concept is the manifestation of the basic instability of our mental performance: it is a makeshift that provides general direction for exploration. In synthesis architects explore concepts by inventing transitions that conclude to the description of artifacts. This study suggests that the process of synthesis, which is an act of human imagination, can be approached by the means of a calculus, as calculation. Taking into account the nature of design concepts and practices, as well as the developments in the field of shape computation, the study explains why and how computational methods can be applied in the process of synthesis of architectural form. Through a theoretical analysis, and actual design paradigms, it shows that shape computation can undertake conceptual and execution tasks in the studio.

Full textThe continuous and aggressive dimensional miniaturization ofthe conventional complementary-metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)architecture has been the main impetus for the vast growth ofIC industry over the past decades. As the CMOS downscalingapproaches the fundamental limits, unconventional materials andnovel device architectures are required in order to guaranteethe ultimate scaling in device dimensions and maintain theperformance gain expected from the scaling. This thesisinvestigates both unconventional materials for the gate stackand the channel and a novel notched-gate device architecture, with the emphasis on the challenging issues in processintegration.
High-κ gate dielectrics will become indispensable forCMOS technology beyond the 65-nm technology node in order toachieve a small equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) whilemaintaining a low gate leakage current. HfO2and Al2O3as well as their mixtures are investigated assubstitutes for the traditionally used SiO2in our MOS transistors. These high-κ filmsare deposited by means of atomic layer deposition (ALD) for anexcellent control of film composition, thickness, uniformityand conformality. Surface treatments prior to ALD are found tohave a crucial influence on the growth of the high-κdielectrics and the performance of the resultant transistors.Alternative gate materials such as TiN and poly-SiGe are alsostudied. The challenging issues encountered in processintegration of the TiN or poly-SiGe with the high-k are furtherelaborated. Transistors with TiN or poly-SiGe/high-k gate stackare successfully fabricated and characterized. Furthermore,proof-of-concept strained-SiGe surface-channel pMOSFETs withALD high-κ dielectrics are demonstrated. The pMOSFETs witha strained SiGe channel exhibit a higher hole mobility than theuniversal hole mobility in Si. A new procedure for extractionof carrier mobility in the presence of a high density ofinterface states found in MOSFETs with high-κ dielectricsis developed.
A notched-gate architecture aiming at reducing the parasiticcapacitance of a MOSFET is studied. The notched gate is usuallyreferred to as a local thickness increase of the gatedielectric at the feet of the gate above the source/drainextensions. Two-dimensional simulations are carried out toinvestigate the influence of the notched gate on the static anddynamic characteristics of MOSFETs. MOSFETs with optimizednotch profile exhibit a substantial enhancement in the dynamiccharacteristics with a negligible effect on the staticcharacteristics. Notched-gate MOSFETs are also experimentallyimplemented with the integration of a high-κ gatedielectric and a poly-SiGe/TiN bi-layer gate electrode.

The discourse of architecture has been greatly affected by the revolutionary ideologies introduced by the rise of Cubism earlier in this century. Cubism had an impact on all the arts; there was a particular affinity between the ideas of construction in Cubism and those of architecture resulting in a closer relationship between art and architecture in this century than in preceding centuries. Three of the four architects discussed in this thesis have had explicit interest in the visual arts; Le Corbusier himself was an established artist. Examining this twentieth century phenomenon has been the task of this thesis, and in particular the concept of layering found in Cubist works and its influence in the formation of new devices of spatial expression. Devices, such as fragmentation, motion and multiple interpretations found in Cubist layering were incentives for architects to investigate the application of the concepts in architecture. I suggest that the fusion of the concept of layering with that of space resulted in a new concept, "spatial layering". Some architectural examples dating after the period following the first war are examined for evidence of these influences, and relationships between them are discussed. Finally, conclusions are proposed regarding the characteristics of the concept of spatial layering as a continuing paradigm of space in architecture.

Full textThis paper proposes an investigation into the spaces of musical performance and its relationship with the music presented on these, with special focus on contemporary classical music. This proposal is justified from the verification of a dichotomy between the architectural design of these spaces, and the music that presented on them in a repertoire of mostly consolidated in the late nineteenth century. This dissociation is particularly interesting given that, until the advent of modern vanguards of the beginning of the twentieth century, music and performance spaces formed a group in line with your time. From this investigation, some examples of spaces facing the contemporary music and its unique characteristics were analyzed, and considerations about the current state of these, drawn. The approach chosen, however, was not the description and analysis from the architectural, technical or social point of view; it was decided by an investigation that relates the development of music itself and its relationship with the space where it is played as how to strengthen this link and identify the points of intersection between the two disciplines. To do so, the work began with some examples of recently built concert halls in the Brazilian context: The Sala São Paulo (1999) and the Auditório Ibirapuera (2005), followed with an investigation of the music commonly presented in these. From the verification of this music, it was sought to characterize the momentum of architectural auditorium, with regard to spatial organization and social setting of these. Two spaces were taken as example, the Palais Garnier (1875) in Paris and the Festspielhaus (1876) in Bayreuth, because they represent, each in its way, one facet of this type. Finally there was a comparison between the music presented in these spaces and contemporary music, which reinforces the dichotomy observed and preliminarily identifying the beginning of the twentieth century as the moment of transformation of the direct relationship between architecture and music. To prove this claim, was held a retrospective of where music had preeminent importance, and in parallel, we tried to address their own concepts of music and architecture, seeking to create elements for understanding the work of musicians and architects. These concepts are essential to understanding not only of these spaces, but also of general relations between different aspects of social life of his time, of crucial importance for understanding the dimension of rupture reported. Through this review, sometwhat descriptive and linear, reflections of the reasons for the changing of the relationship between architecture and music in Modernism, and the consequences of this fact to both disciplines were made. It was also discussed aspects of contemporary music and architecture in places where it was sought an integration. Finally, the conclusions sought, from interviews with professionals and specialized literature of both disciplines, to reflect on the future of this relationship and the role of the architect in producing spaces for contemporary music. It is noteworthy that the literature that addresses this relationship is extremely scarce; this work, therefore, adopted a more general profile and broad spec- trum, rather than a specific point on a specificity of this relationship, as the beginning of a attempt to fill this void of literature.

Bantegnie, Brice. "Eliminating propositional attitudes concepts." Thesis, Paris, Ecole normale supérieure, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015ENSU0020.
Full textIn this dissertation, I argue for the elimination of propositional attitudes concepts. In the first chapter I sketch the landscape of eliminativism in contemporary philosophy of mind and cognitive science. There are two kinds of eliminativism: eliminative materialism and concept eliminativism. One can further distinguish between folk and science eliminativism about concepts: whereas the former says that the concept should be eliminated from our folk theories, the latter says that the concept should be eliminated form our scientific theories. The eliminativism about propositional attitudes concepts I defend is a species of the latter. In the next three chapters I put forward three arguments for this thesis. I first argue that the interventionist theory of causation cannot lend credit to our claims of mental causation. I then support the thesis by showing that propositional attitudes concepts aren't natural kind concepts because they cross-cut the states of the modules posited by the thesis of massive modularity, a thesis which, I contend, is part of our best research-program. Finally, my third argument rests on science eliminativism about the concept of mental content. In the two last chapters of the dissertation I first defend the elimination of the concept of mental content from the success argument, according to which as psychologists produce successful science while using the concept of mental content, the concept should be conserved. Then, I dismiss an alternative way of eliminating the concept, that is, the way taken by proponents of extended cognition, by refuting what I take to be the best argument for extended cognition, namely, the system argument

The thesis proposes a mode of designing that emphasizes the active role that the physical context, including its embedded cultural implications and poetic ideas, might play in the process of architectural design. A successful architectural project in that sense would not only be visually related to its context in a meaningful way, but its form giving conceptual framework would be part of an idea about the site and its relation to the context. Three different modes of architectural inquiry mutually inform each other. While the discussion of contextual theory, namely Contextualism and Phenomenology, seeks to ground the making of reflected contextual references in its underlying cultural and philosophical value systems, the design component not only tested contextual design strategies, but, more importantly, shaped the mode of the theoretical inquiry. Together with case studies that cover a broad spectrum of different contexts and their architectural responses, they identified the critical issue of balancing between the normative urban space and the site specific components.

In the decision-making process of urban development projects, decision-makers and urban designers work collectively as a) decision-makers make decisions of urban development based on the evaluation of urban morphology, b) urban designers visualize design decisions given by decision-makers with 3D urban morphology and produce development proposals after certain rounds of iteration; A proposal involves designing 3D urban morphology, aka the collection of building typologies (parcel level), on a specific site. Due to the high costs of visualizing massive building geometries manually, the current decision-making workflow does not allow adequate iteration before the implementation of the proposal. To reduce the cost of manual modeling work by designers, rule-based approaches (like ESRI's CityEngine) generate 3D urban morphology from spatial geometries via rules. However, the limitations of creating rules are the bottleneck of popularizing rule-based approaches in professional practice. This research explores using machine learning pipelines to synthesize novel 3D morphology from urban design precedents intuitively, solving the above bottleneck. The resulting pipeline learns spatial data and 2D rendering images for two major parts: 1) to extract 2D building typology images from an aerial rendering image of urban morphology, and 2) to predict spatial building data from an extracted image and a spatial parcel geometry. This pipeline promotes the process of creating rules, allowing both urban designers to create visualization and decision-makers to evaluate urban development intuitively.

This step showed that car designers have been increasingly using the home architectural construction principles on the car’s cabin conception design. Our research took into account the opinion of experts in both areas: architecture and design. In this way, we can be certain that the home and the automobile share the same criteria of habitability. We could also confirm that home architectural principles have a positive impact on the improvement of the habitability criteria in space design of the automobile’s cabin. This work opens a research line to analyze the influence of different areas in automobile design, such as aeronautics and electronics. This study can also show the inverse perspective of how car design can eventually have an impact on the future home design

This thesis commences with the basic premise that Timurid Central Asia (which included the regions of Khorasan and Transoxania), with its monumental achievements in Urban Planning and Civic Architecture, beginning with the reign of Tamerlane (1346 - 1405); served as a literal source of inspiration for the urban form of Mughal cities. As an additional corollary to this premise, it puts forward the thesis that the formal similarities observed between the architecture of the Timurids and the Mughals were not purely coincidental; but were indeed the result of a conscious exchange of ideas and images in a varied number of ways. The Mughals seem to have essentially emulated the Timurids in terms of the basic grammar of their architectural creations, and the final product was always unique in terms of the extent, purity and the mix of constituent elements. This cross-cultural 'borrowing' seems to have become more direct and relatively refined when one considers developments in the realm of city planning; where to a large extent, there seems to have operated a 'stereo-typical' notion or model of the urban settlement - predominantly Timurid or deriving from Timurid precedents; which is thereafter applied and overlaid with 'Indianized' or 'Persianized' notions in order to develop the characteristics of the Mughal city. The first part of the thesis examines how pre-Timurid precedents could have contributed towards the conception of a Timurid Urban Model. The characteristics this model and its variations are subsequently discussed with reference to specific cases. The second part discusses correlations between the Timurid and Mughal city in terms of a matrix of political and social variables derived from conditions prevalent in Timurid and Mughal society. The third part of the research looks at factors or agents which may have caused the this cultural interchange to occour between the two cultures.
