Abstract:
Historiography marks a relatively unexplored research domain in architecture. Despite the obscure nature of this subject matter, architectural historiography equally illuminates a hidden pathway to the historical interaction of architecture with art or literature. Critical historiography adds another dimension to this emerging research topic that further encapsulates multiple levels of criticism. In recognition of a growing interest for historiography, it can be argued that the critical aspects of historiography may serve as crucial instruments for an enhanced understanding of architectural historiography. In this article, the realm of architectural historiography is investigated through a multidisciplinary perspective that revisits architectural criticism, critical historiography, modern architecture, phenomenology, and a number of aspects of architectural historiography in the Swedish Million Homes Program.

Its stated aim was to examine the relationship between critical practice in architecture and architectural criticism, intending to place architecture in an interdisciplinary context with reference to modes of criticism in other disciplines, specifically art criticism, and to explore modes of critical practice in architecture: buildings, drawings and texts. Brian Hatton attended the second day of the conference; his comments on the first day are based on discussions with colleagues and reading of transcripts.

This symposium, held at Building Design Partnership's offices on 21 September, was jointly organised by the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA), and its Chair, Dennis Sharp, and the Architecture Foundation, represented on the panel by its Director, Rowan Moore. The topic under investigation was the challenges posed to the critic by a period of massive architectural production: are critics being swamped by the quantity of new buildings, thus reducing the quality of criticism? In addition, is honest criticism held in check by the corporate power of architects, in a world where even ‘art house’ partnerships are now commonly ten times larger than their 1960s counterparts? In a panel of six distinguished critics, one might have expected to find at least six different opinions on any subject. The surprising thing about this symposium was the level of consensus that emerged.

In the postmodern era, besides new approaches to architectural practice, substantial changes happen in architectural textual production owed to the inflow of the postmodern transdisciplinary theory in architectural discourse. Theorists, critics and historians of architecture gladly use the contribution from philosophy, political sciences, sociology, art theory and literary criticism to categorize and explain postmodern architectural styles or tendencies, no longer unifying them exclusively by means of formalistic aspects dating from the same period. Now, topics and paradigms from various postmodern theories are being implemented and thus created the phenomenon of the translation of a theory into an instrument of architectural purpose. In most cases, theoretical outlooks serve as a cover which the theorists of architecture use to formulate the poetics of architects, proclaim desirable models of reception, and develop the stance on the disciplinary and socio-historical contexts. However, it becomes interesting when the same architectural works of a single or several architects are differently interpreted by different theorists of architecture. The paper examines these premises on a specific example, which is: 1) demonstrated in practice by Catalan architecture of the 1980s; 2) the point of convergence between de Solà-Morales, Rossi and Frampton; 3) underlain by Vattimo's philosophical concept of Verwindung of modernism.

The core of the architectural curriculum is based on the design studio which focuses on learning by doing. The learning process in the design studio is takes place in critic sessions. These sessions are kind of communication of ideas and transmitting of knowledge from instructor to student. In contrast to other disciplines, in the architectural design education the evaluation and the assessment are the important part of the learning and teaching process. The Jury system is a traditional architectural learning assessment tool. In this system the student present his/her work in the front of the jury and get feedback or criticism. According to Webster (2006), Jury is the most performative stage of education where the student and agency (the discipline of architecture-as represented by the critics) actually interact. (Webster, 2006). The aim of this study was to reveal the perceptions of architectural design students’ about the ‘Jury system’ as an grading system in architectural design studios. The participants for this study included second, third and fourth grade architectural design students enrolled in the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Mersin University during the 2014-2015 school year. To collect data, each participant was asked to complete the prompt “A jury is like . . . …because . . . …..” . Phenomenological design was used in the study. The content analysis technique was used to analyze and interpret the study data. The detailed discussion will be presented in full paper.

Claims on critical positions in architecture are common ground in contemporary practice and reflection. This article probes into the critical capacity of the architectural project by returning to the notion of 'typological criticism' that Manfredo Tafuri introduced, as well as to the concept of the 'semi-autonomy' of architecture as theoretized by Louis Althusser. The article argues that the criticality of the architectural project resides in its mediation between autonomous and heteronomous aspects and proceeds through the entity of the architectural type.

This paper investigates the history and programme of the Chinese architectural journal Time + Architecture (Shidai Jianzhu). As one of the newly established architectural periodicals in post-Mao China, the journal was launched in 1984 by academics Luo Xiaowei, Wang Shaozhou and their colleagues at the Department of Architecture in Tongji University, Shanghai. The journal's close association with academic institutions and commercial design firms shaped its dual nature; that is, both scholarly and professional. At the turn of the millennium, the journal's substantial reform of editorial policy redefined its character from a ‘presenter’ of received materials to a ‘producer’ of selected collaborative work, and enabled it to maintain editorial distinctiveness in the Chinese architectural publishing scene.This paper argues that Time + Architecture constructed a significant place for critical practice in contemporary China through the presentation of critical architecture and architectural criticism. Over the past few decades, the journal, under the editorship of Zhi Wenjun, published a number of special issues on the work of emerging independent architects such as Yung Ho Chang, Wang Shu, Liu Jiakun and others. The thematic topics, projects and criticisms presented by the journal exemplified an editorial agenda to publish innovative and exploratory work and demonstrated the editors' and contributors' collective endeavours to develop a critical discourse that confronted the dominant ideology of architecture.

AbstractAfter a long period of one-way consumerist attitude toward nature, there have been some alternate perspectives on the systemic relationship between humans and nature, which have been again brought up during the past few decades. Since the late twentieth century, fractal architecture has been one of the most important themes discussed in architecture and it is based on the chaos and complexity theories. Critics often criticize this architecture due to its lack of architectural values, practicality, and attention to economy, culture, and history. The current study aims to clarify the scientific theories that are the theoretical foundations of this approach in contemporary architecture. By categorizing the practical examples of this architectural approach, they are analyzed in terms of their relationship with nature using the logical reasoning method to achieve a favorable architecture. In fact, the gap between this architecture and nature’s behavior is shown.

Architecture has changed from a discipline in service of the larger part of the population through public housing, public buildings, public spaces, urban planning and design to a particular and already in itself disparate niche market of the real estate business that has more to do with the media industry than with public tasks. Architectural criticism has become part of this media industry as well. Thus, Postmodern architecture could flourish as the bastard child of political and cultural populist strategies. Today, architectural criticism finds itself in a deep crisis due to new developments in publishing and it's financing. This also affects Critical Theory. With its background of ideas rooted in Marxism and Enlightenment, Critical Theory seems to have great difficulty with not only the speed of new developments and the unpredictability of their directions, but also with the increasingly dominant irrational but powerful aspects of marketing and propaganda in which it's voice seems no longer heard beyond the walls of the academic ghetto.

<p> In an effort to unveil the underlying potency of architecture I take banal structures and give them a dynamic intervention. Basic architectural forms are manipulated in a way that alters our relationship to them. Once ordinary, the forms are now anomalistic. It is through this surreal reinterpretation of form and space I hope people are encouraged to examine the world around them. By unconventionally combining materials associated with contemporary building practice, or reinterpreting their functionality, I aim to displace the familiar and emphasize the tension inherent in places we think we know. </p>

The history of architecture in Western countries and Lithuania is researched from various points of view. Such significant elements of architecture as light, color, sound, and water so far have been studied as far as their relation to the architecture of certain specific historical periods is concerned. However, up till now research of this kind was limited to deep, yet narrow, fragmented and specialized views of certain historical periods, or research projects were concerned with certain specific aspects of connections between works of architecture and metaphysical beliefs. Because of this, research of architectural history still lacks a thorough account of how metaphysical, religious, and philosophical worldviews affected the artistic expression of architecture of different periods. Without a sufficient amount of research of this kind, it is impossible to reconstruct a thoroughly consistent and more or less total view of the historical development of architecture. On the other hand, it strikes one as obvious that while the history and theory of architecture is being studied in Lithuania, we witness a lack of research work on the concepts of light, color, sound, and water that dominated during certain historic periods. Their impact upon the development of architecture needs to be analyzed and evaluated synthetically in a way that is consistent with a generalized approach, and with the help of research methods applied in the history of ideas and principles of analysis... Apie tokius reikšmingus architektūros elementus kaip šviesa, spalva, garsas ir vanduo yra buvę reikšmingų specializuotų studijų šių reiškinių sąveikos su vieno ar kito istorinio laikotarpio architektūros kūriniais aptarti. Tačiau iki šiol tokio pobūdžio tyrimai apsiribodavo siaurais, fragmentiškais, griežtai specializuotais žvilgsniais į atskirų kultūros istorijos tarpsnių architektūrą arba tokio buvo pabrėžiami tik tam tikri, labai specifiniai sąveikos tarp architektūros kūrinių ir to meto pasaulėžiūros aspektai. Todėl nėra pakankamai ištyrinėta atskirais istorijos tarpsniais vyravusių metafizinių, religinių ir filosofinių pažiūrų įtaka meninei architektūros raiškai. Includes bibliographical references (p. 233-251) An examination of some texts influential in the discourse of Australian architecture in the twentieth century. Explores from a feminist standpoint the gendered nature of discourse in contemporary Western architecture from an Australian perspective. The starting point for the thesis was an examination of Australian architectual discourse in search of some explanation for the continuing low numbers of women practitioners in Australia. Hypothesizes that contemporary Western architecture is imbued with a pervasive and dominant masculinity and that this is deeply imbedded in its discursive constructions: the body housed by architecture is assume to be male, the mind which produces architecture is assumed to be masculine. Given the cultural location of Australian architecture as a marginal participant in the wider arena of contemporary Western / international discourses, focuses on writing about two iconic figues in Western architecture; Le Corbusier, of international reknown; and, Glenn Murcutt, of predominantly local significance.

The study attempts to trace the development of mosque architecture in Islamic history, in modern architecture in the world, specifically focusing on the history of the mosque in Libya. It investigates whether the conformity of mosque components and finishing is due to historic, current and local Islamic prescriptions<br>due to functional purposes and necessities, or merely as an imitation of the stereotype styles for loyalty to mental and habitual traditions regardless of functions. The main objective of this thesis is to study &lsquo<br>the lack of innovation&rsquo<br>in mosque architecture, especially in the Libyan case. The thesis investigates the factors which may have caused this phenomenon and attempts to explore whether there is possibility to innovate mosque design. For this end, the thesis analyzes and evaluates urban, spatial, architectural and performance properties of the existing mosques in city of Ajdabiya in Libya, the results of which are expected to help architects in developing the innovations in mosque design. Finally, the study asserts that acceptance of innovation is possible under the given circumstances: there are differences from one mosque to another, there are variations of mosque elements in terms of type and form, already varying from region to region. The main reasons for the absence of innovations are found to be due to unqualified designers who lack creativity, fear for the vulnerability of the heritage and some misconceptions and misinterpretations in terms of religious prescriptions.

Leslie F. Ayres was an accomplished architect and architectural illustrator. His appreciation for and keen sense of art is apparent in his meticulous and poetic architectural illustrations. Mastering the skill of architectural drawing established Ayres as a designer, but he wasalso a builder. A successful architect, like Ayres, is both an artist and a builder, having the capability to guide a concept from design to construction. Leslie Ayres understood and valued this critical link needed to establish himself as a professional architect.He had a significant influence on the modern movement of architecture in Indiana, and a pioneering role of integrating gardens into his overall architectural designs. His designs utilized the functionalism of the modern movement, uniting the latest in building technologies: steel, concrete, and glass. However in contrast to many modernists, his designs would often reflect architecture based on precedents, incorporating Classical and traditional elements. Moreover, Ayres had a holistic approach to architecture that distinguished him from other modernist architects, in which every detail including light fixtures, interior finishes, and the surrounding landscape, related to the whole design idea.<br>Department of Architecture

The expressive systems in architecture consists of two components: the system of forms and the system of meanings, these systems are linked together by unwritten rules, which are a matrix of correlations / implications that determine any meanings associated with any forms. The designer remains unsure of the possible interpretations of his design, because of the variation in the nature of meaning, discovered by the recipient, and this stems from the variation of reliance on the theory of interpretation in this regard. Many studies of architectural semiology indicate some of these theories; Classical theory believes in the natural meaning, which influenced by form's geometry, Pragmatic theory believes in the common meaning, which stems from the use of form within different contexts and according to social custom. The research attempts to explore the aspects of interpretation adopted by two critics, in order to determine the theory adopted by them, so the designer will be aware to the nature and type of meaning comprehended by viewers. The results showed the adoption of common and inclusive meanings, also showed the variation in the role of architectural Expressions in confirming or multiplying the meaning, influenced by contexts and signal types. The conclusion emphasized the importance of historical references, stylistic trend, and spatial contexts in form interpretation.

Abstract: As a major figure of international modernism, Le Corbusier’s work has been subject to extensive critique and review both during his lifetime and since, to the extent that he has become the world’s most studied 20th century architect. While numerous attempts have been made to assess Le Corbusier’s works and ideas in their meaning and influence, little attention has been given to understanding the phenomena of critical writing and research that continues to surround the architect. Drawing upon research by the authors in preparing a 4-volume anthology of writings on Le Corbusier’s work for a major British publisher in 2016, the paper will trace critical reaction to the architect’s practice through a survey investigation of research and writing produced mainly in English from the 1920s to the present. The paper will give a chronological account of the issues, ideas and approaches that have emerged in critical writings on Le Corbusier and his architecture, reporting on the historiographic questions that have presented themselves in undertaking such a large-scale survey work. Reviewing the work of well-known critics the survey has also sought out lesser-known voices whose presence reflects Le Corbusier’s impact around the world, providing new interpretations through fresh perspectives on his work. The following critical text proposes a series of notes and reflections on the reinforced concrete architecture, not on the material itself. Since its invention, concrete has combined two potentialities, deriving from the two materials of which it is composed: the ‘elastic’ potential, which has been developed and has reached a consolidated form and tradition, and the ‘plastic’ one. The last one has been little experienced at the beginning and, in the course of recent history of architecture, has found space in architectural criticism in the meaning of "expressive", "brutalist", "sculptural", ending up to influence 'superficially' (related to the surface) of architecture. The 'plastic' architecture, instead, is three-dimensional and unifies the construction and spatial qualification in a single design gesture. This critical approach not only allows reconsidering the history of modern/contemporary architecture starting from the necessary collaboration between space and construction that unifies the final judgment on the works, but allows influencing the project, adhering to a formative process of those geographic-cultural areas that possess those certain characters, the masonry one. The Spanish "plastic" architecture is, in that sense, a clear example: in many buildings this "masonry" character is clearly identified, due to the architectural exploitation of the reinforced concrete plastic potential.

Abstract: Although currently it is largely accepted that Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut at Ronchamp is one of the milestones in Le Corbusier’s works, there is no less agreement in saying that it was one of the most controversial of his works and one turning point in modern architecture, not only in terms of digging a grave for functionalism but to opening a window to a wide bunch of architects and works that would have been excluded from history and maybe forever otherwise. In order to recall its importance, we must look back to how architectural journals featured Ronchamp in the mid fifties as, on one hand, Le Corbusier was not a young architect but a very well known and respected one with an international reputation and therefore, it was not easy to criticize his works and, on the other hand, Ronchamp was such a shocking building for many colleagues who had no choice but writing about it that somehow they were between the Devil and the deep blue sea. Resumen: Pedro Vieira de Almeida (Lisboa, 1933 – Matosinhos, 2011) es uno de los más importantes críticos y teóricos de la arquitectura en la segunda mitad del siglo XX en Portugal. En 1963, presenta en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Oporto una tesis titulada “Ensayo sobre el espacio de la arquitectura”, influida por el pensamiento de Bruno Zevi. Hasta la Revolución de los Claveles (1974), va a compaginar su práctica profesional como arquitecto con una intensa actividad crítica ejercida sobre todo en periódicos y revistas culturales. Desde sus primeros trabajos se evidencia una notable capacidad de utilizar conceptos críticos innovadores en el análisis de obras de arquitectura, lo que será fundamental en sus estudios historicos desarrollados a lo largo de su vida, dados a conocer en publicaciones y exposiciones retrospectivas sobre arquitectos clave. Este ensayo propone una reflexión sobre el legado de Le Corbusier poniendo el aciento en algunos artículos de Vieira de Almeida escritos entre 1965 y 1970, así como en la investigación que ha llevado a cabo en los últimos años de su vida. Esta lectura diacrónica pone de relieve el papel central del maestro franco-suizo en la lectura crítica de Vieira de Almeida del racionalismo, a través de las nociones por él manejadas: “estructura crítica como condición base de la creación”, las vertientes poético-simbólica y mítica de la arquitectura o el concepto de carácter más instrumental de la “espesura”. Until the Carnation Revolution (1974), he will combine his professional practice as an architect with an intense critical activity, developed mainly in newspapers and cultural magazines. Since his early work, a remarkable ability to use innovative concepts in the critical analysis of buildings have been put forth, with major consequences in his historiographical studies, developed throughout his life through publications or retrospective exhibitions on key architects. The following paper proposes a reflection on the legacy of Le Corbusier based on Vieira de Almeida’s theoretical work, linking some texts written between 1965 and 1970 with his research carried out in his last years of life. This diachronic study highlights the central role of Le Corbusier in Vieira de Almeida’s critical approach to rationalism, by means of notions as: “criticism as a basic condition of creation”, poetic-symbolic and mythical aspects of architecture, or the more instrumental concept of “thickness”.
