Abstract:
Psychological needs and human wellbeing are aspects of sustainability that urgently need to be reconsidered in architecture. Too often, the concept of sustainability is connected to quantitative building performance, without enough consideration of how people use and enjoy spaces and how their wellbeing is influenced by their environment. This paper introduces the report Bo-miljø or Living Environment, written by Danish environmental psychologist Ingrid Gehl in 1971, into the current social sustainability discourse in architectural design as a way of gaining perspective into psychological wellbeing. The report is particularly relevant for considering the human dimension in housing design and identifies eight basic psychological needs that people have in relation to their living environments. The analysis of this report, and the synthesis of the findings with newer studies and definitions of social sustainability offer a framework for rethinking social sustainability. This essay analyses the findings from Gehl's report and contextualises it within current interdisciplinary research in this area. Critically analysing leading definitions and concepts in social sustainability and wellbeing, this essay offers an architectural perspective on design for social sustainability and wellbeing.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the work of Western and Russian scientists, conducted in the past three decades, on the relationship of psychology and architecture. It is shown that in the West, the neuropsychological aspects of the relationship of psychology and architecture are studied thanks to modern neurobiological equipment, while in Russia there is a clear gap between the representatives of neuroscience, their technical support, and the architectural scientific community. As a result of the analysis conducted in the article, it is concluded that two research blocks can be distinguished. The first of them highlights the relationship between the psyche of the viewer and architecture. This may include research, both revealing the features of the perception of objects, and the influence of an architectural object on the viewer. Another block of research is connected with the psyche of the architect: and here the features of the design process itself are examined, as well as the influence of the personality of the architect on the features of the architectural object. It is concluded that the topic of reflecting the individual or individually-typological psychological characteristics of the personality of an architect in a specific architectural work remains undeveloped both in the West and in Russia, although it is extremely relevant today.

Abstract:
An important application of cognitive architectures is to provide human performance models that capture psychological mechanisms in a form that can be “programmed” to predict task performance of human-machine system designs. Earlier models accounted for some key aspects of performance in a two-talker task, but spatial separation of the speech sources produces complex effects not yet represented. Adding some first-principle mechanisms to the earlier models suggests that this fundamental aspect of multi-talker speech perception can be accounted for as well.

Abstract:
The article describes the importance of coloristics. Color is an integral part that forms a complete image of the world. It can unite urban ensembles, to bear the emotional and aesthetic burden. Color fills the world with expressiveness. The various functions of light in a person's life help to reveal the concepts of a color phenomenon, which contains a mixture of colors, the theory of color harmonies, manifested in the spiritual and material qualities of being. The color phenomenon is association formed in the consciousness. An important aspect in the formation of architectural space is the color of the object-spatial environment. This is a system that includes the color environment of natural objects and the human made architecture. Creative experience and scientific research in the field of color solutions are used for the successful design of the subject-spatial environment. In architecture, color is manifested in terms of aesthetic and psychological approaches. Any activity to create color solutions of the architectural space aims to meet the aesthetic requirements. In addition, coloristics must consider the function of objects, their design and features of the object concept in order to solve a wide range of issues.

Abstract:
The global pandemic of COVID-19, which enforced strict isolation, demonstrated the responsibility of architects and planners for public health promotion. While the concept of therapeutic landscapes is rather new, the quest for designing health-promoting human environment is at least as old as urban planning. The garden suburbs of Ebenezer Howard and Patrick Geddes were planned to promote health and well-being. The ultimate goal of Le Corbusier was to provide daylight and fresh air to each apartment. However, towers in open green space, which were built according to his visions, turned into unfriendly large suburbs. Today, the definition of therapeutic landscapes encompasses not only physical aspects of environment but also social and psychological factors. This study focuses on attempts to create health-promoting places. The interesting question is what are the architectural features linked to health promotion? Although the individual perception of health-promoting places is subjective and may vary, there are some objective qualities of eco-neighbourhoods that are conducive to human health and longevity. This study combines literature review with field observation and resultes in the development of the conceptual framework which can be consolidated into the universal standards for health-promoting places.

Abstract:
One of the main objectives of contemporary society and international research is to improve the physical and psychological health and well-being of the population, especially within the urban space. An effective approach to address this complex issue must necessarily be trans-disciplinary, and must be framed in the broader perspective of the Science of Sustainability, in particular the Psychology of Sustainability and Sustainable Development, as a frame of reference. The study shows the first results of research, in terms of methodology and qualitative analysis, with the following objectives—identification of the criteria for intervention for a healthy city design, with particular attention to the psychological, architectural, and construction aspects, and an initial verification of these criteria, through a case study consisting of a section of the city’s waterfront, in the city of Livorno. This case study has enabled, both, the definition of an innovative design and implementation of solutions, for the correct use, accessibility, and management of spaces. It provides the first evaluation of a possible digital analyses of a waterfront, before and after intervention; and highlights the potential and the critical aspects of the process of recovery and re-appropriation of an urban space, for a new social life, within it.

Abstract:
The concept of urban acupuncture, which has been gaining ground in recent decades, is based on the activation and revitalization of urban environments using small architectural or landscape architectural interventions in precise carefully selected locations of urban fabric. However, the rapid and unexpected design solutions of urban acupuncture, based on ecological design, nature dynamics, street art, material re-use, can cause different social and psychological reactions of urban population and these reactions may vary depending on cultural contexts. Consequently, in order to implement successful urban acupuncture projects in Lithuanian cities, it is very important to find out public opinion and priorities in the fields of public space management, aesthetics, and public art. The aim of the research was to analyze the opinion of Kaunas city residents regarding these issues. For this purpose, a sociological questionnaire survey was used. The questionnaire containing 20 questions was designed, with the aim to find out the trends of use of public spaces in the city, the attitudes of residents towards street art and other small-scale initiatives in public spaces implemented in the recent years, possibilities of creating landscape architecture based on ecological ideas in urban environment, the attitude of inhabitants towards community spaces and community space design in the city, etc. 100 residents of Kaunas participated in this online administered survey. The survey has demonstrated general positive attitude towards contemporary design trends of public spaces and public art; however, the surveyed population expressed preferences towards fully equipped public spaces offering possibilities for a wide range of activities.

Abstract:
Abstract. This article is devoted to the study of the topical problem of qualitative accounting of socio-psychological conditions of human life in residential architecture, namely in the policy of forming the urban environment. The task of this study can be realized by analyzing the regulatory framework, namely, strategies for the socio-economic and spatial development of cities in parts related to housing construction, housing and communal policy, general planning and territorial principles of city development. Systematization and comparison of this information made it possible to single out the factors influencing the formation of design solutions and development in the city. Another important link in this study is the systematization of factors influencing the solution of the problems of forming a living environment. The aim of this study is to characterize the impact of socio-psychological requirements for environmental comfort in the context of housing policy in large cities. In accordance with the purpose of the study, the following tasks were formed: to streamline the system of socio-psychological factors and methods of their accounting in substantiating the housing policy of urban space; to analyze the socio-economic and spatial development strategies of the city of Ivano-Frankivsk for the last 5 years and sectoral documents of the architectural and construction sector and housing policy; to highlight the factors that underlie the formation of housing policy in Ivano-Frankivsk, to develop recommendations for taking into account the psychological aspects of society in the formation of housing policy in cities. The materials of this study are the aging of the socio-economic and spatial development of Ivano-Frankivsk for the last 5 years, as well as industry documents where the prospects for the development of the housing industry and housing policy are formed. The source base of the study to characterize the factors influencing the formation of the city's residential policy are scientific works on psychology, sociology, architectural sociology and public administration. The main research methods of this article are the method of factorial comparison. The methods of group comparison, and the graphical-analytical method of creating a structural model of factors and determining the place, as well as the role of socio-psychological factors in this model, were also used.

Abstract:
Creating diagrams is an occasion for a sophisticated analysis of notions and exploring their meaning. It is also a form of direct contact with psychological phenomena and juxtaposing intuition and deduction as sources of cognition. Analysis of the development of philosophical stances can present the process of a departure from the classical view that holds that this argumentation can have a purely formal character (while the role of intuition is significantly reduced). The by-product shall be an explanation of often encountered simplifications associated with understanding both positions associated with their extreme versions: the intuitive relict or the version of formalism that produces an impression of being a sterile and even absurd argument. I argue in favour of the utility of both positions, as they can present interesting aspects of certain problems in architectural proofs at different stages of design, and used to distinguish different diagrams.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute an inclusive insight into methodological research in architecture and allied disciplines and unravel aspects that include philosophical positions, frames of reference and spheres of inquiry. Design/methodology/approach Following ontological and epistemological interpretations, the adopted methodology involves conceptual and critical analysis which is based on reviewing and categorising classical literature and more than hundred contributions in architectural and design research developed over the past five decades which were classified under the perspectives of inquiry and frames of reference. Findings Postulated through three philosophical positions – positivism, anti-positivism and emancipationist – six frames of reference were identified: systematic, computational, managerial, psychological, person–environment type-A and person–environment type-B. Technically oriented research and conceptually driven research were categorised as the perspectives of inquiry and were scrutinised together with their developmental aspects. By mapping the philosophical positions to the frames of reference, various characteristics and spheres of inquiry within each frame of reference were revealed. Research limitations/implications Further detailed examples can be developed to offer discerning elucidations relevant to each frame of reference. Practical implications The study is viewed as an enabling mechanism for researchers to identify the unique particularities of their research and the way in which it is pursued. Originality/value The study is a response to a glaring dearth of cognisance and a reaction to a growing but confusing body of knowledge that does not offer a clear picture of what research in architecture is. By identifying key characteristics, philosophical positions and frames of reference that pertain to the research in architecture and associated disciplines, the findings represent a scholastic endeavour in its field.

Abstract:
Background: Waiting areas in healthcare settings play an important role in reassuring or potentially further distressing service users. The effects of the designed environment on mental health service users specifically are regarded by health professionals as having a considerable influence on treatment outcomes, experiences, and perceptions of care. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to explore service user and practicing therapist perspectives of waiting areas in mental health service settings and how the design of these spaces affects anxiety levels, comfort, therapeutic relationships, outcomes, and perceptions of care. Methods: The methodology for this exploratory phenomenological study was developed in order to preserve the integrity of participant voices in the essences of experiences, during explorations of their encounters with therapeutic waiting areas. Fieldwork undertaken by the author involved a series of focused in-depth interviews with service users of mental health services and practicing therapists, counselors, and psychologists. Results: Key themes identified through data analysis include (1) space acting as symbolism, (2) interpersonal relations which are threatening, and (3) sensory modulation. Design implications in relation to each theme are presented. Conclusions: This study uncovered a set of findings in relation to symbolic content inferred by spatial design aspects and the ways in which design can afford, or mitigate, development of interpersonal agencies, psychological safety, and negative stigmas. Future transdisciplinary research directions are suggested, including (1) examination of other relationships, beyond the service user–therapist dyad, which may influence waiting area experiences and (2) examination of the applicability of design suggestions to different contexts.

Abstract:
Many current (online) help systems fail because users refuse to use them or, even if they do so, they do not perceive them as helpful. There is an obvious gap between the intentions of the help content authors and the achievement of objectives concerning the perceived usefulness by help users. Problems may be divided into psychological and implementation issues. On the psychological side users are often seriously challenged with understanding the instructions given by the system, which usually is not adequately adapted to user's prior knowledge or the vocabulary of a lay person. This problem of expert-lay communication is strengthened by the implementation problem of missing feedback channels. As a result, help systems do often leave users in isolation with their problems. The current article aims to address these issues by presenting an information architecture for an online help system which addresses aspects of communication between authors and users. The approach combines earlier models of design patterns with features for user contribution from social software and design principles in multimedia learning.

Abstract:
The interior design of hospitals space takes an important role in improving well-being during medical stays. In Today in Ukraine, the development of medical institutions, and especially their interior spaces, is given insufficient attention, and they, with their outdated and unattractive appearance, can cause discomfort to most patients, employees and visitors. Based on this, the general objectives of the study were to analyze the practical experience of interior design of medical institutions and identify important aspects and features of interior design. The article examines the design features of health care facilities from the perspective of the patient, visitor and employee. Analysis of the practical experience of interior design in modern hospitals around the world has revealed the main trends in design solutions. Analyzing the different designs of medical facilities around the world, it was found that the architectural styles for healthcare buildings are extremely diverse. From small specialized hospitals to huge medical complexes that help thousands of patients every day, each facility uses a unique combination of design details. On the basis of this analysis the general approaches of design concerning their formation are revealed. Some of them are based on the orientation and comfortable movement of all subjects of the hospital. Others are based on the fact that the technicality and conciseness of the design - a guarantee of quality medical care. Another approach when the design is based on natural integration and environmental friendliness, which creates a comfortable feeling in the hospital. Based on this, important aspects of the design of medical institutions were identified, including: aesthetic, environmental, functional, psychological and practical aspects. The main features of the interior of medical institutions are identified, which include the following important design elements: noise background, aesthetic and compositional solutions, lighting (natural, artificial), natural communication, ergonomics, comfortable workplaces, accents, visual landmarks. This article defines that the interior design of medical institutions is a set of measures to ensure the proper level of hospitals, which will significantly improve the well-being of patients, optimize the work of employees and create a comfortable environment for all subjects of these institutions.

Abstract:
The paper identified the main aspects of the natural lighting of interior spaces of residential and public buildings, affecting the light forms of education, the quality of light, visual comfort, visual discomfort, uneven illumination, and so on. The quality of architecture as a visual art is mainly evaluated because of visual impressionsthat are possible only in the presence of light. The modern period of development of society is characterized by objective civilized processes of global urbanization, as a result of which architecture itself becomes a cause of a disturbance in the state of balance of the environment for human life and the cause of the ecological crisis. It is known that under the influence of such anthropogenic factors as a decrease in the transparency of the atmosphere due to the growth of cities and industry, insolation resources are changing in residential areas. In the framework of the concept of an urban-ecological approach in the formation of the human environment, the problems of creating a comfortable bioclimatic architecture or ecological buildings that allow the multilateral use of the energy of the Sun are highlighted.Among the factors determining the quality of the environment, an important place is occupied by the natural light environment, which largely depends on the nature of the light climate. Sunlight has a comprehensive impact on all major categories of architecture, including light comfort, durability, expressiveness, and economy. The appropriate level and quality of lighting in rooms and urban areas is an important prerequisite for creating light comfortable living conditions for a person, contributes to his creative activity, increase labor productivity and improve leisure conditions. The parameters of the light environment are one of the main elements that form the microclimate of the premises. In many developed countries, in connection with the expansion of megacities, the issue of not only functional, but also visual aesthetic comfort of the environment is becoming relevant. Creating a light environment that meets the practical, psychological andaesthetic requirements of the people who live in it is one of the most important tasks of an architect. Knowledge of the basic compositional properties of lighting, the ways of its rational use in architecture, and the possession of methodological skillsin architectural design contribute to the successful solution of this problem. Lighting conditions determine the correct perception of the compositional rhythm, the proportions and depth of the premises, plastics and color finishes of the surface. The concept of a light environment includes the integral coordination of the components of natural and artificial lighting, considered in unity and interaction. The progressive reception of integrated (combined) lighting is dictated by social need and is reflected in improving the quality of lighting and in saving resources for the design and construction of buildings and structures.Modern advances in the field of fundamental and natural sciences allow us to improve the methods and means of research and forecasting in the knowledge of the complex interaction of man and the environment. The main task is to optimize the light environment in architecture with the rational use of energy and natural resources. The analysis of scientific works and design practice of architectural firms of Ukraine allowed us to identify a number of unresolved issues (in the aspect of accounting and solving the problem of the comfort of the lighting environment in architecture): 1) black-and-white shaping as a specific tool for architectural composition to achieve plastic expressiveness and as a tool for the architect’s creativity; 2) in the process of developing the facades of buildings for various purposes, the relation to the functional and formative function of light is traced; 3) theeffect of sunlight on interior spaces; 4) the effect of sunlight on residents in high-rise residential buildings. The problem of creating a comfortable lighting environment in European architecture has not been comprehensively considered to date, which served as the basis for analysis and discussion in this work. The comfort of the light environment is lighting, it is the light formation of the interior spaces of architectural objects. The comfort of the lighting environment can satisfy people in the interior according to many requirements, divided into qualitative and quantitative categories.Quantitative categories are determined by the level of necessary illumination. Qualitative categories are determined by the spectral composition of light and its distribution in space.

Abstract:
The existence of the internet today changes individual behavior in many aspects that not only have a positive impact but also have a negative impact on its users. The rise of internet abuse that occurs causes syndromes such as internet addiction and diseases that attack the individual's physique. Therefore a container for dealing with the physical effects of internet addiction in millennial adolescents becomes necessary. Container which also provides psychological support to individuals. The site is in the area with the most millennial growth and also with consideration of function utilization, the chosen site is Semanan, Kalideres, West Jakarta. The design method used is descriptive qualitative and experimental methods in designing where experiments are conducted by incorporating aspects of suitable architectural design in the project and synthesis analysis to find out the best architectural design strategies that can optimize the program of healing room facilities for victims of internet addiction. Thus the design recommendations chosen were the application of healing gardens and architectural healing to the design of "healing rooms for the physical effects of internet addiction" which would be linked to the physical healing process not only for healing for internet addict patients but also maintaining the comfort of all individuals in in it from nurses who work to the management staff.

Abstract:
For engineering applications, human comfort in the built environment depends on several objective aspects that can be mathematically controlled and limited to reference performance indicators. Typical examples include structural, energy and thermal issues, and others. Human reactions, however, are also sensitive to a multitude of aspects that can be associated with design concepts of the so-called “emotional architecture”, through which subjective feelings, nervous states and emotions of end-users are evoked by constructional details. The interactions of several objective and subjective parameters can make the “optimal” building design challenging, and this is especially the case for new technical concepts, constructional materials and techniques. In this paper, a remote experimental methodology is proposed to explore and quantify the prevailing human reactions and psychological comfort trends for building occupants, with a focus on end-users exposed to structural glass environments. Major advantages were taken from the use of virtual visual stimuli and facial expression automatic recognition analysis, and from the active support of 30 volunteers. As shown, while glass is often used in constructions, several intrinsic features (transparency, brittleness, etc.) are responsible for subjective feelings that can affect the overall psychological comfort of users. In this regard, the use of virtual built environments and facial expression analysis to quantify human reactions can represent an efficient system to support the building design process.

Abstract:
A well-designed office environment is often touted as a key motivator nowdays, although it is not entirely clear how to use it consciously. Our goal was to understand the role of the physical environment in new generation offices and whether it can be a motivator at all. We asked open-office employees to describe the three main criteria of an excellent work environment. We analyzed 509 participants' 1456 answers and classified them into 146 content codes. These content codes were further categorized based on whether they refer to the physical or/and the social environment, as well as along the eight needs Maslow described. 82.07 % of the answers referred to the physical environment, ambient stimuli dominated the sample with 324 mentions under 6 content codes (eg.: bright (128), quiet (69)). The majority (55.59 %) of the responses could be categorized under Maslow’s safety needs, but 14.15 % of them referred to one of Maslow’s growth needs (eg.: plants (26), decoration (21)). Using the intersection of Maslow's and Herzberg's theory, we argue that certain physical environmental aspects can be considered as a hygiene factor, some of them as a motivator. And some of them as both meaning some aspects can be considered on more level from an emotional-motivational perspective. Planning an office is not just an architectural question, but a psychological one as well. In order to design human-focused work places we need to understand the exact role and the layering of the physical environmental aspects.

Abstract:
Article addresses issues, constrained with the use of property colors allowing to use him, as psychological factor, for the achievement of aims, facilitating vital indexes or impedimental to the functional processes, showing up in contrasting relations in an interior. The use of the contrast effect is based on a person’s desire to compare everything. When studying the manifestation of contrast from a scientific point of view, two aspects of the problem are distinguished: psycho physiological and aesthetic. Both factors must be considered when creating an interior. Contrast in the interior, as in painting, is important, especially when choosing expressiveness. Depending on the intensity, the contrast can give the impression of diversity, strength, determination. To create a mood in the interior, convey emotions and set the right accents, you need to transform the walls into an interesting element of design. You need to create a complete composition of all the elements of the interior. Contrasting interiors are always expressive. Particular attention should be paid to the arrangement of a work of art in a contemporary interior and its integration into the architectural space. By creating a painting for the interior directly, we can change the architectural space and set the color palette, as well as choose the material to create the artwork. Choosing a work of art allows designers to create bold interiors to order. This article aims to explain and systematically characterize the selection of materials and principles in determining the type and purpose of the interior, as well as to formulate the criteria for creating a competent contemporary interior, using contrasting features when finding the main visual focus in the interior. Thus, the contrast used as a means of organizing the architectural environment also works to enhance the impact of the work of art on the created interior and multiply its significance.

Abstract:
This study examines the strands of thought that define the urban design discourse today. One of the common and primary urban design approaches developed an understanding of the visual, perceptual, and psychological dynamics underlying human behavior in urban areas. It associated urban design with the visual characteristics of built forms and their impact on people's perceptions and ability to create clear mental maps or images of their surroundings. Another approach emphasized historical, typological, social, and morphological aspects of built forms. It linked successful urban spaces with mixed-use, traditional urban models and advanced place-making principles that encourage spatially defined, legible, and culturally grounded built environments. Lately, there has been an increased debate about the potential of developing an all-encompassing, holistic urban design approach that synthesizes prior urban design approaches and is predicated on the premise that urban design is an interdisciplinary activity concerned with creating livable/sustainable built environments. However, dialogues with architects, landscape architects, and planners revealed an entrenched professional divide among urban design practitioners based on their educational backgrounds and subsequent experiences. This study is premised on the need to address the contradictory views about the city in design and planning educational curricula in order to bridge the intellectual divide and build a holistic or interdisciplinary urban design approach.

 ABSTRACT
Violence is a very aggressive act and violations such as torture, beatings, rape and domestic violence that cause or are intended to cause suffering or hurt others. In this case, more handling is needed for victims of violence, especially for children as well as for women, this is because mentally towards victims tends to cause trauma due to physical and psychological violence that they experience. Therefore, we need a rehabilitation center with the concept of healing environment for victims of violence against children and women, who can help the healing process both physically and psychologically. The purpose of this study is to apply the concept of healing environment in the design of rehabilitation centers for victims of violence against children and women in Samarinda. This research is an applied research (applied research) that uses architectural design methods. The results of this study are expected to be a reference in planning and designing health facilities using a healing environment approach. To provide a sense of security, a rehabilitation place should also support aspects of the environment such as garden media or healing gardens and building concepts related to nature so that a healing environment can be created, so that it can help the healing process for patients through the human senses which can directly also affect the psychological of the patient.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper examines residential satisfaction in welfare housing facilities exclusively built for low-income single-mother households in South Korea. The main objective is to identify predictors from among various domains such as sociodemographic and psychological characteristics of residents, as well as objective and subjective characteristics of their residential environment.Design/methodology/approachA mixed-method field study evaluates data obtained via structured questionnaires administered to 233 low-income single mothers in 23 residential welfare facilities across South Korea, supplemented by facility observations and interviews with housing staff from 16 facilities.FindingsResidential satisfaction was found to be a multidimensional construct predicted by a number of variables, with psychological characteristics being dominant. Significant predictors were also identified among physical and sociospatial environmental characteristics, such as plan type, management and service and personal space.Practical implicationsThe results of this study highlight the significance of the human aspects of management and the sociospatial quality of housing unit spaces to provide a sense of protection and privacy for the residents, which emphasizes the importance of management, design and policy improvements to increase satisfaction in welfare facility residents.Originality/valueCurrently, data for special housing conditions of female-headed households in unstable housing affordability are relatively few and outdated. A critical examination of the physical and sociospatial quality of short-term subsidized public housing for low-income single-mother households in South Korea expands the current knowledge in this field to various sociodemographic and cultural contexts.

Abstract:
According to UNESCO Convention 1972, cultural heritage consists of tangible and intangible heritage. Soundscape has been considered as a part of the intangible heritage, and it refers to the perceptual quality. In the realm of built environment, perceptual qualities become important concerns, since cultural heritage cannot be described and appreciated using mono-sensorial analysis fundamentally based on vision. As perceptual construct, soundscape has been considered as a new approach in understanding the formation and design of sensitive urban environment. It is argued that perceptual quality, besides visual aesthetics, geographic, psychological and socio-cultural aspects, must be part of the considerations in architecture and urban design. Bandung is well-known for its urban heritage, and as former well-designed colonial town, the historic buildings and areas have morphologically constituted the structure of the inner city. However, the modernization and globalization have led to inevitable transformations, including the destruction of historic places and fabric/district of cultural significance. With the latest urban dynamics, urban environment has also experienced an inescapable process of “sound globalization”, which led to the losing of specific sound-marks in the respective area. This paper is based upon an ongoing research project on strategy for conservation of historic urban areas using soundscape approach. Methodologically, through sound walks, surveys and interviews, several notions relating to urban spatial and formal quality have been collected, assessed and interpreted. The result stands for the understanding of perceptual aspects and quality of urban space in historic urban areas that may contribute to the heritage conservation strategy.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to take a look at the phenomena of office noise and to try and outline the worker perceptions of noise in a multi-dimensional and holistic manner. This is done in a case study setting in contact center environment. Design/methodology/approach – The research was carried out in three phases. First, a review of existing research was carried out. Second, 28 interviews were carried out to outline the dimensions of office noise. Third, a set of 20 further interviews were carried out to study the dimensions of noise that appeared from the first phase of the research. Findings – The literature review introduces seven streams of office noise research. None of these looks at the office noise as a holistic and multi-dimensional experience of office workers. The results from the interviews suggest that office workers see the office noise to have negative, neutral and positive aspects. In call center context, the most important aspect of noise includes: psychological and physiological symptoms, dynamism, social setting, knowledge transfer, socialization and sound masking. Research limitations/implications – The data are limited to one specific kind of work setting, namely, contact center environment. Thus, the findings may not be generalized to cover other types of work. Even though the sample size of 48 interviewees is quite big for a qualitative research setting, the basic problem of the research orientation is still present. The results are intended to give an in-depth insight on dimensionality of office noise in the complex interrelated open-plan office system. Originality/value – Existing research on office noises and acoustics tends to see the office noises just as a negative phenomenon. This leads to research settings that neglect the positive aspects of the noise. Further, this leads to somewhat distorted discussion and practical recommendations.

Abstract:
This symposium will review the latest data on the influence of environmental design and its attributes on the cognitive and psychological wellbeing of older adults living with dementia. The presenters will cover the myriad ways in which the physical environment of care can adapt to the changing demands of older adults with sensory, motor and cognitive deficits and foster optimal functioning and quality of life. The role of emerging technologies will also be reviewed as they complement the contribution of the design of the physical environment to the wellbeing of older adults with cognitive impairment. Information will be offered through a review of the existing research literature as well as case studies that illustrate the impact of environmental modification on fostering wellbeing and minimizing the emergence of the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. The presenters will represent and integrate sensibilities that have emerged from the fields of architecture, cognitive neuroscience and psychology. How the Principles of the Culture Change Movement Inform Environmental Design and the Application of Technology in the Care of Older Adults Living with DementiaWilliam E. ReichmanThe culture change movement informs a number of principles that have been applied to more contemporary design concepts for the congregate care of older adults living with dementia. This talk will review the core tenets of the Culture Change Movement as exemplified by the Greenhouse, Dementia Village and other innovative models of congregate long-term care. Specific reference will be made to how these tenets have been operationalized around the world into the design of programming and the creation of residential care environments that foster a better quality of life for older adults and an enhanced work environment for care providers. This talk will also include the emerging role of technologies that complement innovative design of the environment and which foster optimized social and recreational functioning of older adults living with dementia.A Better Life Through a Better Nursing Home DesignL. Bradford PerkinsOver the last 20 years there has been extensive experimentation related to the role of the environment in the housing, care and treatment of persons with Alzheimer’s and other age related dementias. Prior to that time the typical housing and care environment was a locked unit in a skilled nursing or other restrictive senior living facility. In 1991 the Presbyterian Association on Aging in Western Pennsylvania opened Woodside Place on its Oakmont campus. This small 36 bed facility was designed to incorporate the latest research and care experience with persons suffering from these issues. This one small project, as well as the long post occupancy research led by Carnegie Mellon University, clearly demonstrated that individuals with Alzheimer’s and related forms of dementia could lead a healthier, happier, higher quality of life in a more residential, less restrictive environment. Not everything in this pioneering project worked, and five generations of living and care models have followed that have refined the ideas first demonstrated by Woodside Place. Bradford Perkins, whose firm designed Woodside Place and over 100 other related projects, will discuss what was learned from Woodside Place as well as the five generations of projects (and post occupancy research) that followed.Innovative dementia care environments as alternatives for traditional nursing homes: evidence and experiences from the NetherlandsHilde VerbeekKey goals of the dementia care environment focus on increasing autonomy, supporting independence and trying to enable one’s own lifestyle for as long as possible. To meet these goals, innovative, small-scale and homelike care environments have been developed that have radically changed the physical, social and organizational aspects of long-term care in the Netherlands. This presentation discusses various Dutch models that have implemented small-scale and homelike care environments, including green care farms, dementia village and citizen initiatives. The models reflect a common care concept, focusing on residents’ remaining strengths, providing opportunity for choice and aiming to sustain a sense of self and control. A small number of residents (usually 6 to 8) live together in a homelike environment and nursing staff are part of the household. Residents are encouraged to participate in daily household activities, emphasizing normalization of daily life with person-centred care. The physical environment resembles an archetypal home. This talk presents the scientific evidence on the impact and effects of these small-scale, homelike models on residents, their family caregivers and staff. Furthermore, the presentation will highlight working approaches and how these initiatives have positively influenced routine care across the long-term care spectrum.

Abstract:
The Museum of 2000 years of German-Jewish History in Berlin, designed in 1989 by Daniela Libeskind, an architect of Polish origins, was to make a powerful reference to the Holocaust as well. Using an underground passage, the architect connected the existing Baroque edifice of the Kollegienhaus in Kreuzberg’s Lindenstrasse, with the building created to his design (the so-called Abteilung). The external form of the buildings is a steel, flat-topped structure, composed of cubical blocks, irregular and marked by incisive edges. Inside, this zig-zagging building was intersected by a straight structure, 4.5 m wide, 27 m high and 150 long, which runs interruptedly along the main axis. The resulting empty spaces, extending from the ground floor to the roof, are tightly isolated from the remaining sections of the edifice. The analysis conducted by the author targets the comparison of that structure of the Void with the Freudian notion of the Unheimlich (uncanny). The comparison was made in a conversation with Libeskind by the originator of the theory of deconstruction, Jacques Derrida. Unheimlich is a psychological notion, which in this case denotes “secret”, “hidden” Jewishness, which instead of remaining an “internally closed” aspect is manifested as a characteristic, “negative” reflection. The term, entangled in the context of architectural theory as well as in the notion of anti-monument, represents a starting point in considering the contemporary condition of German culture, where that Void /unheimlich is a constant, “burdensome” echo of the Holocaust.

Abstract:
With the advancement of modern era, architects have seen the architectural spaces as aesthetical masterpieces focusing more on their style, composition, pedigree, form, symbolism, allegory etc and how wonderful they look from the street then their design having an impact on its user and its value in terms of cognitive health, functionality and social determinant of mental and physical wellbeing. It is a well-known fact that our environment and surroundings play a vital role on our moods and health. More aesthetically improved, but not very smartly designed space affects our disposition and vigor. This situation leads to various health issues which can easily be curtailed with the proper use of architectural techniques employed. The Aim of the research paper is to identify the situation on hand around the city of Karachi and to focus upon the fact that people are socially, morally, ethically and physically at a state of ultimate distress and how the environment responsive architectural spaces can be wholesome for the human if they are more nearer to natural instincts then phoniness. The adopted methodology for this research was observational with qualitative comparisons of stakeholders with conversational interviews from the context of Pakistan specifically Karachi. Information for this was gathered through concentrated primary and secondary research methods both qualitative and quantitative.

Abstract:
The paper tests the methodology of architectural and ethnographic research of the object of material culture-a masterpiece of world architecture of the Roman Pantheon. The method involves performing the proportional-metrological analysis of the forms using the results of three-dimensional laser scanning. The sequence of actions allowing receiving extremely reliable dimensional drawings of necessary elements of an architectural monument is presented. The analysis suggests that the design metrological module of the Pantheon was a Roman foot of 0.445 m. A detailed analysis of the size of the rotunda plan made it possible to confirm the hypothesis that the design was based on the use of an integer analogue of the number "PI" - fraction 22/7. In addition, an integer right triangle 5: 12: 13 could be used to construct the right angle and to determine the basic proportions of the elements of the facade of the portico. Apparently, in the process of designing the forms of the Pantheon, the method of harmonizing elements on the basis of the similarity method with a change in their scale was used.

Abstract:
This research will inspect factors with higher impact that are predicted to be more influential in the relation between architecture, interior architectural design and the psychological status of residents and users. The level of awareness about the importance of this relation is the basic introductory factor. Identity, privacy and safety impacts, health concerns, accessibility degree, open spaces feature, aesthetic sense are the main parts of the research. Most parts consist of two divisions. The first identifies the nature of each factor. The second recognizes the important architectural consideration needed to realize the psychological condition of residents and users. The research aims to increase the concern about the importance of the interaction between interior architectural design and human psychological behavior. An introduction of a group of important consideration can be used to help designers choose and apply a suitable interior architectural design that match psychological needs through sound relations between architecture, interior architecture and the psychological status of residents and users.

Abstract:
Architectural lighting design is generally believed to have visual and psychological consequences on humans, and has been investigated either as an artistic or a scientific endeavour. This paper explores the possibility that these two viewpoints are not mutually exclusive with a poetic approach. It builds upon two arguments: the first is that poetry, being an inherently compositional system like language, impacts the perceived meaning of lit environments; the second is that humans seek qualities with experiential richness when interacting with lit environments, which is very much aligned with poetry. This reasoning is supplemented by reflections on the poetic possibilities within realised projects used as simple artistic and scientific case studies to demonstrate this complex visual and psychological interplay. Opinions from academics and professionals from the field of architectural lighting design are sought on these poetic possibilities, the appropriateness of these realised projects in expressing their respective qualities, and on the role of poetics in architectural lighting design in general.

Abstract:
Translating the German expressions Entwurf or Entwerfen into English seems to be an easy task: ‘design’ or ‘designing’ are the common choices recommended by dictionaries whenever a translation of Entwerfen or Entwurf is intended. The mutual translatability is evident since both ‘designing’ and Entwerfen refer to the same phase of an architectural process. Similarly, Entwurf and ‘design’ refer to the outcome of the architectural process as well. This confirms their exchangeability. It is notable that there are no similarly convincing alternative translations available, at least not in the form of single words or short expressions.‘both “designing” and Entwerfen refer to the same phase of an architectural process [and…] to the outcome of the architectural process‘But there is no doubt that the expressions ‘design’ and Entwurf refer to different practices and media. They stress different aspects of the process of developing new concepts, ideas or objects, and different aspects of the result. This is why the common translation becomes dubious. Translating proves to be a challenge. The term ‘design’ offers characteristic and conceptually important qualities, as does the German word Entwurf, and the implications of each are so different that there is some doubt that ‘design(ing)’ can function as the adequate translation of Entwerfen.
