Coskun, Esatcan. "Documentation Of Architecture: Photography As An Objective Tool?" Master's thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12611407/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its invention, photography has been accepted as a reliable tool for achitecture in terms of its power for creating objective documents of the built-form. The aim of this study, is to question the so-called objectivity and reliability of the photographic representations of the buildings by showing how architectural photography emerges also with an artistic and purely aesthetic character rather than being a mere tool of objective documentation. Taking this formal emphasis on architectural subject as a basis, a broader focus will be given to the photogenic character of the images used in architectural publications. Instead of reflecting real spatial experience, these idealized photographs are used in a given context to constitute a fiction that alters the viewer'
s understanding of the architectural subject. Therefore, the main question is not whether architectural photography is an objective tool of documentation which is capable to represent architecture as it really is or it is a category of purely artistic activity
it is about how photography alters our vision about architecture and constructs new ideas for architectural discourse. By taking Tabanlioglu Architects'
Dogan Media Center building in Ankara as a key study, this thesis aims to focus this alteration and question the potentials of architectural photography.

Pienaar, Marguerite. "The Norman Eaton legacy : a critical architectural appraisal of the documentation of his domestic oeuvre." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/41017.

Full text
Abstract:
The documented legacy of South African architect Norman Musgrave Eaton (1902– 1966), as preserved at the University of Pretoria, provides the material for a contemporary analysis and extrapolation of his domestic oeuvre through the construction of a biographical-disciplinary context and chronology. Why and how Eaton’s domestic architecture expresses its lineage of forms, space, material, and detail are explored in this study. Eaton’s architectural oeuvre demonstrates a rare encounter between the Modern Movement and Africa. The residential architecture of Eaton, he being based in Pretoria, draws strongly on the African monumental past, while denoting both a regional and universal consciousness. Local influences are drawn from diverse sources: Cape Dutch architecture, Great Zimbabwe, Eastern Africa and the unselfconscious architectural endeavours of the Ndebele. Through the systematization of his records, the researcher is able to set up a biography within context in order to capture the critical moments in Eaton’s development and his designer’s mind. The chronological study of his domestic drawings further allows for the tracing of African and other influences in relation to his travels and their translation into architectural expression. Typological plan compositions and motifs emerge with clarity to aid in providing a critical appraisal of his domestic work.

Abstract: Restoration is a scientific discipline internationally recognized which has its own methodological parameters. In attendance to requirements imposed by the discipline, an architectural restoration project is elaborated from concepts and specific regulatory elements that incorporate knowledge from different fields compromised with authenticity. Based on these premises, this research sought to reflect on the limits of preservationist practices in Brazil, with emphasis on the State of São Paulo, for the implementation (or lack of it) of recommended methods for formal acknowledgement and preliminary technical study of historical and architectonical artifacts, whose fundamental instrument is documentation drawing. Starting from the analysis of historical conditions and theoretical-operational basis that drove the main protagonists in the theme, with special attention to Camillo Boito and Gustavo Giovannoni, this study aimed to investigate the value of drawing as a tool for analysis, knowledge and recognition of historical objects, in order to improve procedures for the design of architectural restoration project in Brazil. Through five case studies - three related to author's professional experience and two developed on master's course -, where the use (or absence) of survey and graphical representation had preponderant roles to demonstrate cognitive capacities for conservative assessment adopted in each case, this dissertation aimed to investigate and disseminate forms of architectural documentation for intervention on existing buildings to enhance the use of drawing as a methodological resource for cultural heritage preservation

Cal, Nazli Naz. "A Proposal For The Structure Of Production Drawings Of." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12608735/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Documentation is an important aspect in the construction industry since there are many types and number of documents that have to be controlled for the success of a given project. In design/build projects, site technical groups of the contractor upgrade the tender drawings by preparing shop drawings to be sent to the consultant for checking purpose. Especially in large projects a great many shop drawings are produced, causing a need of a system to keep track of and to understand the status of the drawings. These all can be achieved with a proper documentation system to be used within the company. The main aim of this study was to make a proposal for the structure of production drawings of &ldquo
design/build&rdquo
construction projects in computer environment to maintain control of the drawings in the construction sites while documenting them for project completion. This system should base on CADD Standards. In this, first, the architectural production drawings were identified. These were then arranged according to the model file-naming convention of the selected CADD Standard. Following, the main folders of the proposed documentation structure were created and, finally, the working principles of the structure were introduced. The system was applied to a real construction project for a period of two weeks and tested by usability evaluation. The results of the usability evaluations revealed that the system provides advantages in terms of the control of shop drawings and documentation for project completion. Conversely, the system did not maintain ease of communication.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the heritage architectural studies benefit of the contributions of diverse digital methods and open new perspectives for the conservation, the analyses and the knowledge sharing especially on complex sites. Those new tools and techniques have become common and very useful presently, but how much they become common or indispensable for architectural and archeological studies? How do they fit into the different phases of the research work?We will discuss these principal questions by working mainly on two experimented sites, the site of Saint-Simeon the stylite in Syria and the abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa in France. The methodology used for the analysis and the elevation restoration is based on the digital tools and acquisition techniques and of three-dimensional information management and also on their setting relation with archaeological issues to build a dialogue between these two domains. Based on this reflection, we have developed a work protocol in scale of monographic study of a specific building in Saint Simeon site “the Residence”. This research is based on a combination of digital tools applied on this building for its analysis and by using them as a privileged instrument to support archaeological reflection, not an end in itself. The main contribution of this thesis focuses on the methodology and the ethics of the use of 3D digital service in archaeological approach, from the filed acquisition till the restitution representations. This approach highlights several axes, dynamism and interactivity of the work, the multidisciplinary and the collectivity context, the objective of documentation and diffusion

Abstract:
In 2020, the meatpacking district of Stockholm (Slakthusområdet) is at the beginning of a period of change. A lot of its buildings are being demolished, or at least gutted, to transform a historical area of industry into a more urban district of housing, offices, trade, and services along with new parks and squares (Stockholms Stad, 2020). This thesis project is specifically about the first building that was torn down as part of the development of the area, Sandhagen 2. We should consider our condemned buildings a precious resource and extract from them rather than from the earth. In every house there is invested energy which is lost the day it is demolished but there is also something else that is lost other than precious resources. The research aims to highlight the importance of reuse not from the more obvious sustainability point of view, but as something that can be aesthetically motivated. The method involves a dissection of Sandhagen 2, extracting interior architectural elements without excessive alterations, and making an organized taxonomy. The taxonomy is then rearranged into a new spatial composition. How can a space be created from a taxonomy defined by an interior architect? How does a material’s earlier life add or take away potential in its future life?  The proposal is a strange space where the tension created by reuse is completely between the elements themselves, a result of having to become the conventional parts of architecture that complete a space; steps, something to sit on, floor, partitions.

Abstract:
As a consequence of the increasing requirements on enterprises caused by globalization, fusion of business and IT, new/changing technologies and especially new regulations Enterprise Architecture Management has gained increasing public attention. In this context Enterprise Architecture (EA) can be considered as a holistic view of an enterprise acting as a "collaboration force" between business aspects such as goals, visions, strategies and governance principles as well as IT aspects. For EAs to be useful and to provide business value their formal and comprehensive documentation (data collection and visualization) is essential. Due to the increasing information amount caused by the extending scope on the business as well as on the IT side the EA modelling is cost-intensive and time-consuming. Most of all the documentation is impaired by increasing linking and integration as well as by the striving for automated cross-company business processes. Consequently, the relevant data are widely scattered. Current approaches are largely determined by manual processes which are able to deal only to a limited extent with the new trends. However, a lot of the needed information, above all about the application landscape and the interrelations, is already present in existing Enterprise Service Bus systems used to facilitate the collaboration between applications both within and beyond boundaries. This allows avoiding the expensive task of data collection. This thesis is concerned with the automated documentation of Enterprise Architectures and the support of decision-making using the information provided by an existing Enterprise Service Bus, whereby as a concrete system SAP NetWeaver Process Integration is used. Therefore a tool-aided automated process for the creation and visualization of an Enterprise Architecture model instance is proposed. An essential aspect in this connection is the coverage of the EA information demand set up by EA frameworks such as CySeMoL and ArchiMate, the analysis of the quality as well as the implementation of the logic to transform SAP PI data into EA information. Moreover, several viewpoints are proposed to visualize the extracted data appropriately especially regarding decision problems in the area of the collaboration between applications both within and beyond boundaries.

Haendler, Thorsten. "On Using UML Diagrams to Identify and Assess Software Design Smells." SciTePress, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5220/0006938504470455.

Full text
Abstract:
Deficiencies in software design or architecture can severely impede and slow down the software development and maintenance progress. Bad smells and anti-patterns can be an indicator for poor software design and suggest for refactoring the affected source code fragment. In recent years, multiple techniques and tools have been proposed to assist software engineers in identifying smells and guiding them through corresponding refactoring steps. However, these detection tools only cover a modest amount of smells so far and also tend to produce false positives which represent conscious constructs with symptoms similar or identical to actual bad smells (e.g., design patterns). These and other issues in the detection process demand for a code or design review in order to identify (missed) design smells and/or re-assess detected smell candidates. UML diagrams are the quasi-standard for documenting software design and are often available in software projects. In this position paper, we investigate whether (and to what extent) UML diagrams can be used for identifying and assessing design smells. Based on a description of difficulties in the smell detection process, we discuss the importance of design reviews. We then investigate to what extent design documentation in terms of UML2 diagrams allows for representing and identifying software design smells. In particular, 14 kinds of design smells and their representability in UML class and sequence diagrams are analyzed. In addition, we discuss further challenges for UML-based identification and assessment of bad smells.

The Center for Reflective Community Practice in MIT's Department of Urban studies is involved in projects helping community organizers working on social change. In order to foster reflection, they are currently utilizing what they refer to as "Critical Moments Reflection". This method entails the identification and naming of key shifts or turning points (critical moments) in the process of the community organizers' work. To drive learning through reflection, they use stories relevant to the turning points, they then analyze those moments using a pre-specified genre of poignant questions. I have created an application, the CMReflector, that aids in the process of Critical Moments Reflection. It will facilitate the process of documentation by utilizing some of the rich computational tools that we now have access to. Since the learning that people acquire through their work stays largely under the surface, there is need to systematically examine the lessons learned and articulate the knowledge and questions that have come out of such work. The application provides an organizational structure and taxonomy around which to compile tacit knowledge and its representation, allowing for exploration of such knowledge in a richer fashion. In order to leverage the use of archived materials, tools such as TalkTV (an application that re-sequeces television content) have been used to augment my application allowing for a "low floor" entry to multiple media editing by the users. It is envisaged that these tools aid in bringing forth the intrinsic "ifs" and "thens," as well as generating the potential for serendipitous learning experiences. All this is very useful in bringing some form of rigor into the practice of reflective inquiry.

Abstract:
Information and the related assets form critical business assets for most organizations. Organizations depend on their information assets to survive and to remain competitive. However, the organization’s information assets are faced with a number of internal and external threats, aimed at compromising the confidentiality, integrity and/or availability (CIA) of information assets. These threats can be of physical, technical, or operational nature. For an organization to successfully conduct its business operations, information assets should always be protected from these threats. The process of protecting information and its related assets, ensuring the CIA thereof, is referred to as information security. To be effective, information security should be viewed as critical to the overall success of the organization, and therefore be included as one of the organization’s Corporate Governance sub-functions, referred to as Information Security Governance. Information Security Governance is the strategic system for directing and controlling the organization’s information security initiatives. Directing is the process whereby management issues directives, giving a strategic direction for information security within an organization. Controlling is the process of ensuring that management directives are being adhered to within an organization. To be effective, Information Security Governance directing and controlling depend on the organization’s Information Security Policy Architecture. An Information Security Policy Architecture is a hierarchical representation of the various information security policies and related documentation that an organization has used. When directing, management directives should be issued in the form of an Information Security Policy Architecture, and controlling should ensure adherence to the Information Security Policy Architecture. However, this study noted that in both literature and organizational practices, Information Security Policy Architectures are not comprehensively addressed and adequately managed. Therefore, this study argues towards a more comprehensive Information Security Policy Architecture, and the proper management thereof.

Abstract:
All along its life-cycle, a software may be subject to numerous changes that may affect its coherence with its original documentation. Moreover, despite the general agreement that up-to-date documentation is a great help to record design decisions all along the software life-cycle, software documentation is often outdated. Architecture models are one of the major documentation pieces. Ensuring coherence between them and other models of the software (including code) during software evolution (co-evolution) is a strong asset to software quality. Additionally, understanding a software architecture is highly valuable in terms of reuse, evolution and maintenance capabilities. For that reason, re-documenting software becomes essential for easing the understanding of software architectures. However architectures are rarely available and many research works aim at automatically recovering software architectures from code. Yet, most of the existing re-documenting approaches do not perform a strict reverse-documenting process to re-document architectures "as they are implemented" and perform re-engineering by clustering code into new components. Thus, this thesis proposes a framework for re-documentating architectures as they have been designed and implemented to provide a support for analyzing architectural decisions. This re-documentation is performed from the analysis of both object-oriented code and project deployment descriptors. The re-documentation process targets the Dedal architecture language which is especially tailored for managing and driving software evolution.Another highly important aspect of software documentation relates to the way concepts are versioned. Indeed, in many approaches and actual version control systems such as Github, files are versioned in an agnostic manner. This way of versioning keeps track of any file history. However, no information can be provided on the nature of the new version, and especially regarding software backward-compatibility with previous versions. This thesis thus proposes a formal way to version software architectures, based on the use of the Dedal architecture description language which provides a set of formal properties. It enables to automatically analyze versions in terms of substitutability, version propagation and proposes an automatic way for incrementing version tags so that their semantics corrrespond to actual evolution impact. By proposing such a formal approach, this thesis intends to prevent software drift and erosion. This thesis also proposes an empirical study based on both re-documenting and versioning processes on numerous versions on an enterprise project taken from Github

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on basic documentation within an idiographic circumstance. The documenting object is dwelling courtyards in Ancient City of Ping Yao (ACPY). It explores the former similar documentation efforts and introduces the author’s own proposed documentation methodology, and follows up the later application of the methodology, and finally assesses itself. This process provided a meaningful reference sample to other practical documentation work. To better introduce the documentation methodology, the dissertation also talks about Ping Yao dwelling courtyards in detail. If the reader is interested in local residential architectures, this dissertation will be helpful. Besides referring significance of documentation method exploring, the documentation also involves deeply into ACPY’s conservation affairs, which is mainly concluded in appendix. To introduce the factors influencing this event of conservation career, this dissertation can be a record to ACPY’s conservation development in the transferring times, which can lead people who are interested to have a better understanding what is going on at the implementation level.

Abstract:
Scientific and engineering communities (e.g., chemistry, bioinformatics and engineering manufacturing) have presented unprecedented requirements for knowing the provenance of their data products, i.e., where they originated from, how they were produced and what has happened to them since creation. Without such important knowledge, scientists and engineers cannot reproduce, analyse or validate experiments and processes. Previous work has conceived a computer-based representation of a past process for determining provenance, termed process documentation. However, current provenance systems do not adequately address the problem of reliably recording process documentation in large scale environments like Service Oriented Architectures. For example, a service may not be available and network connection may be broken. In this context, reliably recording process documentation becomes challenging, given that the documentation produced in a process can be spread over multiple provenance repositories across the world. The presence of failures (specifically, the crash of provenance repositories and communication failures) may prevent process documentation from being recorded, losing the evidence that a process occurred. This would have disastrous consequences and hence is not acceptable in the domains that rely on process documentation to determine the provenance of their data products. In this thesis, we systematically analyse all situations that may occur during capturing process documentation in the event of assumed failures. We then present a novel coordinator-based protocol that is formally proved to record complete process documentation. In addition, we use graphs to intuitively represent the topology of process documentation recorded in multiple interlinked provenance repositories, which helps us to investigate the entire retrievability of distributed process documentation. Finally, we evaluate a system architecture that employs the protocol and supports practical issues such as communication, storage and performance. The results show that the system can record complete and retrievable process documentation while maintaining acceptable performance.

The traditional methods for the documentation of archaeological heritage sites are challenged today by developments in geomatics, information technology and the computer industry. Non-contact spatial measurement methods, as well as new spatial information systems technologies and computer visualisation tools have introduced a new age for conservation and site research. This thesis uses the instance of the documentation of the 3.6 million-year-old hominid footprint trackway in Laetoli, Tanzania, to address the need for an adequate scientific method to acquire, manage and visualise spatial data for the re-creation of archaeological heritage sites in a three-dimensional virtual world. The Laetoli site presents the first physical evidence of human bipedalism. Its consequent significance to human evolutionary science justifies the need for highly detailed and accurate documentation of its characteristics. The thesis explores digital photogrammetric techniques as data acquisition tools for this kind of close range archaeological environment. Specifically, it examines issues such as non-contact measurements, cost-effectiveness, and functionality in harsh conditions. The data collected at Laetoli had to be organised, managed and presented to allow future research on the footprints and to allow the general public to "visit" the site. This thesis shows how a spatial information system is used to manage spatial and meta data, while an integrated visualisation tool offers a virtual 3D reconstruction ofthe heritage site.

Abstract:
The objective of the study was to gain new insight into archival building documentation in the United States since 1933 focusing on Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) as a case study. It sought to help explain how individuals with different levels of involvement with the HABS program, and throughout its entire history, understood the development, current operational context, and future direction of HABS. Seven general philosophical and practical issues were explored: 1) how HABS documentation standards were understood and applied, 2) the relative values of the process and products of documentation, 3) the understanding and application of the objective and subjective natures of the documentation process, 4) whether the mission of the program had changed with changes in the operation of the program since its inception, 5) the role of technology in the process of HABS documentation and how it shapes the end products, 6) defining broader historical epochs with the goal of adding to existing understandings of the history of the program, and 7) the causes and effects of HABS drawing style changes over time.

Full text
Abstract:
The retention of historic structures and the information which they contain, the basic goals of historic preservation, has occurred with increasing frequency in the twenty-year period following the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Admittedly, the ideal scenario involves the retention and reuse of architecturally or historically important structures. However, occasionally notable buildings are found which are located upon sites earmarked for new construction or which have deteriorated to a condition which makes restoration or adaptive reuse not economically feasible. Adequate documentation prior to the destruction of such buildings not only preserves the information therein contained, but also may encourage reuse of some structures by making the owner aware of their contribution to the streetscape, to local history or to the architectural history of a community or region.Although parameters for adequate documentation exist at the national level for national landmarks, state and local standards are vague at best, leaving both the professional and the non-professional preservationist to determine the level of documentation and the amount of research required. Difficult at best for the professional, documentation in the absence of guidelines frequently proves disastrous for the non-professional.This thesis is the product of a documentation project conducted between September 1984 and October 1985 to provide "adequate documentation" for a client of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Having no established guidelines or precedent to follow, and instructed to produce "adequate documentation" for 28 structures at six Indiana State Hospitals, the documentation team learned much during the fourteen-month process of producing both written and graphic documentation. The author presents this descriptive analysis of one component of the documentation process - the preparation of the 331-page written text which accompanied photographs and H.A.B.S. drawings. While each project differs, the Indiana State Hospital Project established a precedent which may be referred to By the C.A.P. when faced with similar projects in the future.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1992 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
Within the Aerospace industry, the operational community is facing staff reductions, reduced skill levels, and greater complexity of space assets and space missions. This combination requires that techniques be developed that more efficiently interface a human operator with a complex computer system. Operational support of complex space systems will be greatly facilitated by better presentation of information. The presentation and distribution of complex data must evolve towards formats that are easily and naturally embraced by our sensory systems. Some of the information technologies/techniques that facilitate the presentation of complex dynamic graphical data fall into a category called integrated media. The cost of implementing integrated media (IM) architectures has decreased substantially within in the past five years. While implementation costs continue to recede, the quality and value of information that can be presented using IM technologies continues to improve. Today's IM architect can select a variety of components including digital interactive video, 3D Navigable Worlds, Multimedia Authoring Systems, standardized compressors for IM data, low cost high volume storage systems, and operating system extensions for temporal data management. Together, these components form a solid foundation for the development of a variety of compelling IM architectures. Existing satellite support and mission data processing architectures typically present tabular data for assessment. Some "advanced" systems include 2D graphical projections of the data. System experts are generally trained to correlate relationships between tabular data items. The training required to "learn" these complex relationships is tedious and time consuming. This complexity impedes productivity and as space systems increase in sophistication, these techniques for data assessment are quickly becoming antiquated. The development of a prototype decision support system explores the utility of an integrated media documentation system as part of a full-featured decision support architecture for satellite operations.

Maldonado-Torres, Joaquin. "Historical research and documentation of the grounds and gardens of La Casa Blanca, San Juan De Puerto Rico." Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/543768.

Abstract:
La Casa Blanca (The White House) is the old fortress house of Juan Ponce de Leon’s family, located in the city of San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico also known as Old San Juan. The house was originally built in the early 1500s as one of the first permanent constructions on the islet of San Juan. Both the house and its grounds have undergone several physical changes through their almost 500 years of existence. The house (which today is a museum) has been restored and documented, including the surrounding buildings which were built during the 17th and 18th Centuries and which form the Casa Blanca building complex.Today several garden areas exist on the grounds of Casa Blanca. These gardens have the potential to enhance the site more than they do presently, not only in the aesthetic experience that the visitor to Casa Blanca could have because of the beauty of the place, but also in the experience of history and legend associated with Juan Ponce de Leon.Lamentably, with the possible exception of the Hispano-Moorish garden located next to the central patio of Casa Blanca, the remaining garden areas have not been formally documented for purposes of correct design development or so that the visitor may appreciate and understand their history. In this creative project the author has documented all the information available on Casa Blanca and its gardens from written sources, plans, and from oral interviews obtained in Puerto Rico and the United States. The original intent of the author was not only to document the gardens and grounds of Casa Blanca, but also to create a restoration/rehabilitation design for the best use of this area. This scheme would be in accordance with their historic, legendary, and aesthetic relationship to Casa Blanca and Old San Juan as part of the total cultural heritage of Puerto Rico. Instead, this research of Casa Blanca's gardens' history in itself became the focus of the creative project due to the large amount of time and effort necessary to locate and compile the information. A rehabilitation design plan was not possible in the time frame for this project. However, this investigation opened new areas of study, as it dealt with the overall unrecorded garden history of Puerto Rico which was essential to document before a restoration/rehabilitation plan could be made. The author hopes that this study, as the first documentation of a Puerto Rican garden, will initiate the recording of the total garden history of Puerto Rico.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation is an intellectual biography which discusses the projects and utopian visions of Paul Otlet (1868-1944). Paul Otlet formulated the concept of ‘documentation’, a field incorporating both study and practice that evolved out of bibliography before developing into information science. He was also a sociologist, an internationalist and indefatigable promoter of his conception of ‘universalism’ or ‘mondialism’, and of the Mundaneum and the Cité Mondiale. The major source that is used to throw new light on Otlet as a utopian thinker is an impressive collection of thousands of unpublished schemas. By means of an historical analysis of his schemas and writings, this thesis aims to identify the fundamental universalistic character of his utopian vision of knowledge organization and international organization. Universalism was a phenomenon incorporating complex personal ideals and social objectives, assuming different meanings in the fields of science, culture and politics, and reflecting the historical circumstances and undertakings of the time. By exploring how Paul Otlet and others dealt with the issue, this dissertation aims to contribute to the history of the idea of ‘universalism’.

Abstract:

I want to give the state of temporarily a shape or a face and to define time through the material and design, like a time capsule. As an interior architect I am questioning the usage of the temporary in the architectural and giving it attention by using architecture, furniture, states and materials as my framework.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
In the documentation of software architecture, it must be considered two relevant points: i) the architecture is composed by several visions, and ii) each vision identifies a set of components and interactions which allows a better understanding between developers and system programmers. The documentation of the components, when treating reusability, must present a set of information concerning its functionality and applicability in order to adapt them in applications of same domain. When we think of interaction among components, the information concerning the communication messages must be well identified so that the process of working may be clearly understood. This work shows the creation of a catalog of documentation patterns for the architecture of image processing and analysis systems approaching on the concept of design patterns and architecture visions of UML which will be used as the base for designing the Patterns. Through its use, the developers will be more sure of which is necessary to document and safer when reusing components previously tested and documented. It is also shown in this work the development of templates environment of the Patterns in the tool MoinMoinWiki aiming at creating a scenery for collaborative work and also a repository of information on documentation of systems architecture and frameworks within image domain.

Abstract:
Network documentation is often a low-priority task at many companies. Despite this, there are many benefits that should be considered against the fact that it is a comprehensive job. Good network documentation can provide companies the opportunity to reduce dependence on individuals, take proactive decisions and save money. Network documentation mainly consist of physical and/or logical topology descriptions that describes the logical and/or physical layout of the network. These so-called architectural views focus on technology rather than the services and features that the company's network provides. To simplify communication between stakeholders with different areas of knowledge, e.g. between an engineers and corporate management, I propose a model that complement traditional visual description of a network. With the help of viewpoint frameworks such as Kruchten's "4+1" model, I want to visualize relationships between corporate services, business processes, applications and the underlying infrastructure. A qualitative case study at a company with needs of network documentation has resulted in a prototype, a viewpoint framework, based on concepts of enterprise architecture. Analyzing a use case together with the prototype demonstrated that the prototype can visualize relationships between different layers in an organization. The prototype can be used as a starting point or guidance for those who want to document architecture of an enterprise network. The prototype can serve as means of communication in order to justify the investment that in turn ensures a modern energy-efficient operating environment that creates conditions for sustainable information- and communication technology.

Abstract:
Augustodunum, civitas Aeduorum, roman city founded under the reign of Augustus, was equipped with four roman city gates : the gate of Arroux and the gate of Saint André, both well preserved, the gate of Saint Andoche which sole remaining part is a flanking tower, and the gate of Rome, destroyed long ago.The heart of this study lies in the stratigraphic reading of those gates structure and in thoughts about the building site of Autun’s city gates operating process. Moreover, since the 16th century, antiquaries, travelers and artists have described in many ways their visits to the roman city gates of Autun. These accounts constitute a major documentary collection of written and iconographical sources that had never been studied as a whole before. A classification of written sources was necessary in order to understand the borrowings from previous works. A similar work of critical study has been realized for the iconographical representations of the gates. As an essential complement of the stratigraphic reading of remaining elevations of the gates, the ancient archeological documentation study was indispensable to propose a restoration hypothesis of Augustodunum’s city gates long term history from their construction time to nowadays. The last section of this study aims to locate Autun’s city gates in the series of monumental city gates built in Western Roman Empire between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD. Furthermore, that section presents new propositions for the restoration of the architectural project, of the gates plan and of the inner organization of these gates flanking towers

Abstract:
This project is a study of the wastescape - a network of waste - of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in Odisha, India.  The study incorporates key locations, e.g. landfills, urban wastelands and waste warehouses; major actors in the formal and informal waste sector; and flows of waste through economic and social systems. Drawing from the studies, multiple interventions within the wastescape are proposed for improvement of the economic, ecologic and social situation. An important aspect of the project is the development of an approach for how to, as architects, work with big, complex, contingent networks; how to map and understand such a system; and how to determine where to intervene. To improve the existing wastescape, interventions must consciously and holistically address multiple scales; levels of formal-informal; and phases within the waste cycle. The study includes a vast amount of possible interventions. Some of the interventions are further detailed to show feasibility; impact on the wastescape; and synergies with other interventions within the wastescape.

Abstract:
Software architecture provides a high-level framework for a software system, and plays an important role in achieving functional and non-functional requirements. Since the year 2004, software architecture has been considered as a set of architectural design decisions (ADDs). However, software architecture is implicit and evolves as the software development process moves forward. The implicitness together with continuous evolution leads to many problems such as architecture drift and erosion as well as high cost reconstruction. Without capturing and managing ADDs, most of existing architectural knowledge evaporates, and reusing and evolving architecture can be difficult. These problems are even more serious in global software development (GSD). This dissertation presents a novel methodology for capturing ADDs during the architecting process and managing the evolution of ADDs to reduce architectural knowledge evaporation. This methodology explicitly documents ADDs using a scenario-based approach, which covers three views of a software architecture, to record architectural knowledge, and incorporates evolution-centered characteristics to manage ADD evolution for reducing architectural knowledge evaporation. Furthermore, the dissertation presents ADD management in the context of GSD to analyze typical ADD management paradigms, and to offer insights on, techniques on, and support for sharing and coordinating ADDs in a GSD setting. This dissertation focuses on both the documentation and the evolution needs for ADDs in localized and global software development.

Abstract:
Software architecture is considered as a set of architectural design decisions. Capturing and representing architectural design decisions during the architecting process is necessary for reducing architectural knowledge evaporation. Moreover, managing the evolution of architectural design decisions helps to maintain consistency between requirements and the deployed system. In this thesis, we create the Triple View Model (TVM) as a general architecture framework for documenting architectural design decisions. The TVM clarifies the notion of architectural design decisions in three different views and covers key features of the architecting process. Based on the TVM, we propose a scenario-based methodology (SceMethod) to manage the documentation and the evolution of architectural design decisions. We also conduct a case study on an industrial project to validate the applicability and the effectiveness of the TVM and the SceMethod. The results show they provide complete documentation on architectural design decisions for creating a system architecture, and well support architecture evolution with changing requirements.

These drawings are a tangible representation of an object that has no tangible existence. Conventional documentation regards the act of drawing as that process upon which the object is wholly dependent for its coming into existence: they assist in ‘getting to’ the building. However, the definition of the word ‘document’ refers to a record of events, that is, post factum evidence. Within architecture, drawing as a record is not the dominant practice. Instead, representation that is a visualisation of the non-existent dominates. Hence, the realm of post factum documentation is under-examined. Due to the predominance of drawing within architecture, models are seen as an adjunct to drawings and so their role and potential has been examined in far less depth than that of architectural drawings. This thesis explores the notion of the model as three-dimensional post factum documentation of architecture. Through the theory of drawing, case studies of models of various scales are examined. These case studies are the Panorama model of New York City, the reconstruction of Mies van der Rohe’s German Pavilion, and the exhibition of architecture as post factum model, in particular the work of Peter Eisenman, Herzog and de Meuron, El Lissitzky, Allan Wexler and Diller and Scofidio. This examination repositions models within an expanded notion of the design process, which displaces the built object as the endpoint of this process, and investigates the critical facility of models.

Abstract:
It would seem that it is in times of change and transition, when identities are being re-assessed or rewritten, that society looks to the past for guidance hoping to gain knowledge of how to “go on in the world”; it is a search for some meaningful, useable past that can be used as a springing point for present and future development. This dissertation forms a component of a similar search. It asks what the value of the past and cultural memory, a group phenomenon, is to present and future societies. Most importantly it investigates how architecture engages with cultural memory, asks what the nature of the engagement is and what the advantages of such an engagement are to people. The investigation tackles the issue of architecture as a form of non-verbal communication and investigates how that communication is carried out and in particular the modes it assumes when communicating cultural memory – it asks where cultural memory is located in architecture. The aim of this research is to formulate methods or professional attitudes which could obviate the role architecture could continue to play in the evolution of society.

The fact that maintenance cost occupies almost two-thirds of the total software cost is reported repeatedly in past research literature. The high cost of software maintenance can be attributed to some common maintenance problems such as outdated software documents and skewed software architecture. This paper proposes a method undertaken by a medical center located in southern Taiwan to recover software architecture and rebuilt documentation of its Hospital Information System (HIS). The architecture and documentation will serve as the foundation of migrating applications from legacy HIS systems to a component-based architecture. Our research starts with defining maintenance-oriented software architecture by conducting literature study and interviewing experienced software analysts. Then, we proceed the architecture extraction phase by analyzing source code and the recovered architectural information are then saved into a repository in a top-down fashion. As we re-construct the architecture, software developers need to provide some additional descriptions to complete the documentation. A software architecture management system is developed to assist software developers in querying and maintaining software system documentation. Finally, we propose a mechanism to inform software maintainers to update program specification simultaneously while maintaining programs. We expect that the recovered architectural information could be used to evaluate change impacts and to estimate maintenance cost in the future.

Many application programs on computer systems are getting more complex as their functionality is enhanced. As a result, they require their users to have extensive knowledge in many different disciplines in order to take advantage of the power of the systems. Therefore, it is virtually impossible for a novice to master a complicated application. Even if some users can understand the functionality of a computer system to some extent, they may not use the system in a consistent fashion. The concept of hyper-control wasproposed to solve the problem mentioned above [Chen 96]. The basic idea of hyper-control is to use a hypermedia document to control other hardware or software systems. The same idea can also be applied to other systems to shorten the The same idea can also be applied to other systems to shorten the training time, and to make the on-line help system more effective. In this thesis, based on the Design Pattern technology, we design and implement a system architecture supporting the hyper-record and the hyper-control mechanism. The hyper-record mechanism allows an application system to record user’s operations and then save the results as a hyper-control document automatically. The user can control an application system through a hyper-control document. The system also provides a convenient tool to manage hyper-control documents, and allows users to share their experiences by exchanging their hyper-control documents on the Web. We also propose the concept of the “Dialog Server” for developing a consistent user interface quickly and easily.

Volzone, Rolando. "Architecture of the Soul: Legacy of the eremitical congregation of São Paulo da Serra de Ossa (Portugal)." Doctoral thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/21385.

Full text
Abstract:
This work analyses the legacy of the Portuguese eremitical congregation of São Paulo da Serra de Ossa - its architectural and landscape features - with the aim of complementing previous researches, contributing to the knowledge dissemination regarding this congregation's network, and to the creation of protective policies in relation to this cultural heritage, since all these monasteries have lost their original function and values. First, a preliminary genealogy of the eremos was traced, and the evolution of its physical and spiritual values in space and time (3rd-14th centuries) was examined, mainly supported by national and international bibliography, archival documentation and on-site surveys. The subsequent study of medieval documentary sources enabled the definition of the eremitical landscape and its reconstitution in terms of ecological and cultural components (1366-1578). After the settlement’s identification, a census of the existing physical structures - sometimes just evidences - was carried out through a literature review, an archival dataset and on-site morphological and spatial analysis, allowing a critical interpretation of the monastic landscapes (1578-1834). Lastly, the work delves deeper into the development after the religious orders secularisation (1834-nowadays). Santa Margarida do Aivado monastery constitutes the pilot case in producing digital documentation, thanks to non-intrusiveness and reality-based methodologies. The creation of a multilevel database lays the basis for heritage valorisation. This can be achieved through the knowledge and use of cultural heritage, for example - with cultural heritage routes and virtual reality tours that can ensure access for all. This research intends to outline a multidisciplinary methodology, crossing the fields of History, Archaeology, Architecture and Heritage. Being quite ambitious, in terms of geographical and chronological range, it intends to trace new paths and possibilities for future studies, which could establish comparisons between this and other religious orders. The findings of the analysis highlight a continuity in the communities' choices of location, strategy of occupation, architectural function and spatial organisation.

Abstract:
In 1997 the University of Victoria began to develop a vision for a First Peoples House with the objective of constructing a welcoming Coast Salish home on the university campus. This vision was realized in 2009 when the First Peoples House opened to the university community and public. Goals stemming from early discussions of a First Peoples House included a house that would support Indigenous culture, community events, and showcase Indigenous art. The First Peoples House represents a case study of how Indigenous artists and their material culture intersect with new Indigenous architecture. This paper is a supporting document to accompany a documentary film showcasing Indigenous artists and key players who participated in the development of the First Peoples House. The purpose of this paper and film is to document developmental stages of the First Peoples House that includes material culture—“art”—embedded within the architecture of the house. Nine interviews include the artistic vision of six artists whose work is represented in the house, and three individuals who were involved in early developmental and current phases of the First Peoples House. The research is placed in a historical context respecting the relationship between Indigenous architecture, residential schools, space and place and material culture. Film adds another dimension to the scope of this paper. Together, the paper and film form a visual and critical analysis highlighting historical shifts along with contemporary understandings of cultural narratives, material culture, Indigenous culture and architecture as integrated within the First Peoples House at the University of Victoria.

Abstract:
The village build-up area in the region of Vysočina has been considerably changed during the 19th century from the timbered to the bricked constructions. The change started in the southwest part of this region at the beginning of the 19th century, which was probably caused by the older build-up area, which had already been partly bricked. The timbered constructions in the Vysočina's northeast part were officially tolerated from the late 19th century above all because of the rare build-up area in higher localities, where the wooden houses did not pose such fire risk like in villages with houses built closer to each other. Bricked buildings have gained a complicated progress during the 19th century, which was allowed by mostly various material sources. Partial rebuildings were often during the one or two generation time on average, which showed up thanks to the noted historical objects. From this reason it was necessary to look on all preserved objects from the view of building history, since all found situations are the results of the wide variety of the building phases covering each other. The progress mostly influenced by the fire prevention rules proceeded in many ways. The most important of them was the change of material of the walls and gradual separation of the truss and the roof...
