Abstract:
We are pleased to present an interview with an outstanding writer, urbanist and architectural historian, Chris van Uffelen, the author of a number of books on the history and theory of architecture. The space of the city in all its manifestations - from the history of architecture to the analysis of global street navigation, from current problems of adapting the urban environment to a man’s personal space to the aggressive or positive impact of a person on a megapolis, is the sphere of his professional interests. Chris van Uffelen is distinguished by his broadmindedness and takes an active position in the field of a professional and public conversation about architecture. His articles are presented in authoritative publications on architecture. He is an encyclopedist professionally analyzing both the architecture of the Middle Ages and the space of modern cities. Editor-in-chief Maria Burganova talks with Chris van Uffelen about architecture - its purpose, its past, and the future. The topics that concern many of us today - the change in architectural and cultural space, a person who influences a city, and a city that changes a person, are reflected in this conversation. We thank Sophia Romanova for professional support and assistance in arranging the interview with Chris van Uffelen.

Abstract:
Santrauka. Keywords: architecture, history, competition, Manfredo Tafuri, Klaipeda. ABSTRACTTHE COMPETITION BETWEEN ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORICAL VISIONS OF KLAIPEDA: BRAVE DECISIONS VS. SUSTAINABLE PRESERVATIONThe issue of the relation of Klaipeda’s image to urban planning has been the subject of intense debate. Old and new buildings transforming Klaipeda’s image at once correct and adjust the city’s past: its past can for example be reshaped, renewed, preserved or destroyed by architectural means. Thus architecture becomes an object of historical interest. In this article the analytic scheme proposed by the architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri is employed. Importantly, Tafuri dissociates architects from architectural historians: the former is operative, utopian and future-oriented; the latter is critical, memorial and oriented to the past. Between the two extremes Tafuri places the figure of the architectural critic, who is dependent on both architecture (as an object) and history (as knowledge). Such a schema is however incomplete as Tafuri ignores the figure of the expert of heritage protection. In the expert of heritage protection Tafuri’s schema can be refigured around four categories: theory (historian and critic), practice (architect and expert of heritage protection), past (historian and expert of heritage protection) and future (architect and critic). This upgraded framework is applied to the case of Klaipeda city in order to describe recent encounters, controversies and conflicts between two predominant visions – architectural and historical – concerning city planning and the protection of material heritage.

Abstract:
More than three decades ago, the architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri pessimistically concluded that a revolutionary architecture cannot precede a social revolution. In this comment, he summed up the perceived failure of Modernist architecture to realise a social utopia. The comment implied that the architectural discipline, as part of the superstructure, cannot affect society; rather, it is the means and forces of production which determine society, while architecture only reacts, corresponds and represents these changes.

Abstract:
The National Central Museum in Nanjing (1935–48) was co-designed by the most distinguished architectural historian in twentieth-century China—Liang Sicheng. It has long been regarded, however, as a representative work of “conservative revivalism” in modern Chinese architectural history. Idealizing a Chinese Style: Rethinking Early Writings on Chinese Architecture and the Design of the National Central Museum in Nanjing attempts to demonstrate the creativity of the design process, Lin Huiyin, and the architects’ ideal for a Chinese-style modern architecture. This ideal, Delin Lai argues, is profoundly rooted in the expectation of Chinese intellectuals for a “Chinese renaissance,” for which the Chinese architectural past was studied, evaluated, and more importantly, redefined through a dialogue with the contemporary architectural discourses and historiography formed in the West. The National Central Museum epitomizes this search for an ideal.

Abstract:
The last century was marked by the proliferation of modernism and many of its varieties have left lasting marks on architecture as well as contemporary cities, however, this legacy and its present forms produce ambiguous affects on architectural practices as well as on city-building. The legacy, or perhaps it is much better to call it legacies – of modernism so far remains rather controversial and sparkles ongoing debates not only among architects, theorists and critics of architecture, but affects wider layers of society, these days preoccupied with architectural and urban issues. Witold Rybcynski – an architect, urban historian as well as prolific and renowned architectural writer and author of numerous books that have been translated to many languages is professor emeritus of Pennsylvania University and co-founder of Wharton Real Estate Review. He has contributed a lot to the understanding of architectural legacy as well as it contemporary trends. A stimulating and thoughtful writer, he has discussed various aspects of architecture, urbanism and city-life that are important to architects, architectural academy and society at large. This conversation was stimulated by his writings as well as need to reconsider historical issues.

Abstract:
Mary Wingfield Scott (1895-1983) was a leading figure in the historic preservation movement in Richmond, Virginia. Scott demonstrated a preservation philosophy that transitioned from the sentimental, patriotic focus of early preservation efforts to a modern, academic approach that valued the built environment for its relationship to the city and its history. Scott educated persons on the value of preserving houses that were architecturally significant or connected to the city’s heritage. She documented the antebellum housing of Richmond in two books, founded the William Byrd Branch of the APVA, conducted walking tours throughout the city, wrote a newsletter for the William Byrd Branch, and purchased houses to prevent their demolition. Scott was a strong advocate of adaptive reuse, which she applied to the Greek Revival houses known as Linden Row. Scott’s approach to preservation is mirrored in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) enacted in 1966 and Richmond’s 2009 Downtown Plan.

Aslam, Emrah. "Historical references in architectural design with special emphasis on Anatolian vernacular architecture : a study in Turkish tourism architecture." Thesis, University of Salford, 2011. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26554/.

Full text
Abstract:
Architects in Turkey have made extensive reference to traditional Anatolian building styles in recent work. However, there has been little systematic study of how they have gone about the use of these references. This research analyses varied approaches of designers and their ways of interpreting the vernacular heritage in recent living environments. This research is not designed to investigate the architectural design process itself; the aim is rather to look for possible influences of the archetypes of vernacular and regional architecture in contemporary architecture in order to create a unique identity, using different design actions; imitation, bricolage, analogies, interpretation and mimesis. In order to search for the possible effect of the archetypes of vernacular environment on contemporary design practice, selected architects who have been active in the recent design of tourism buildings in Turkey have been selected. Seventeen case studies have been analysed and nine architects have been interviewed. Many regions in Turkey have been visited in order to have wider archive of Anatolian Historical and Vernacular archetypes. From each architect, several buildings have been chosen for observation and analysis. The data was collected in several different ways, which are: first, direct observation, visiting the sites for the relevant information such as photographs, sketches and scaled drawings; second, semi-structured interviews with the designer in order to catch their intentions in selected case studies. The current study is based on qualitative analysis using HyperResearch software on both materials gathered by observation and interview transcripts. The result of the collected data with selected research method showed that the Anatolian historical and vernacular archetypes are being used by the architects in their recent architectural practices via different level of referential interpretations. The research goes beyond simple subjective observations of the use of historical references; this has been achieved through the development of framework for the systematic classification and analysis of a range of reference types. This has been used both in the interpretation of visual material and in the analysis of documentary sources and interviews with architects. The intentions of each architect in case studies have been identified and a list of most frequently used historical elements have also been given. Keywords: Vernacular architecture, historical references, Tourism Buildings, Turkish Architecture, Imitation, Bricolage, Analogy, Interpretation, Mimesis.

Airas, A. (Aino). "Historian museo Turkuun." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2016. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201606012074.

Full text
Abstract:
Diplomityöni aihe on historian museo Turkuun. Valitsin tontiksi pysäköintikenttänä toimivan alueen Turun linnan pohjoispuolelta, vanhalta satama-alueelta. Suurin osa alueen varasto- ja teollisuusrakennuksista koostuvista kortteleista on jo kaavoitettu uudelleen asuin- ja liikekäyttöön. Sijoittamalla museon tälle alueelle pyrin tukemaan satama-alueen kaupunkikuvallista muutosta ja lisäämään alueen vetovoimaisuutta tulevaisuudessa. Läheinen matkustajaterminaali takaa museolle hyvän näkyvyyden varsinkin matkailijoiden silmissä. Laadin museon tilaohjelman Turun museohankkeessa mukana olevien tahojen toiveiden pohjalta. Noin 4000 neliöinen museorakennus käsittää lähinnä yleisölle suunnattuja tiloja. Tilat on ryhmitelty niin, että ensimmäisessä kerroksessa sijaitsevat kaikki yleisön vapaasti käytettävissä olevat toiminnot. Pyrin näin helpottamaan lipunmyyntiä ja ennen kaikkea madaltamaan kynnystä poiketa museoon muutenkin kuin katsomaan näyttelyä. Museoon saapuminen tapahtuu Linnankadun puolelta puistomaisen sisäänkäyntiaukion kautta. Olen pyrkinyt näin luomaan yhteyden Linnanpuiston ja uuden museon välille, jättäen kuitenkin tarpeeksi etäisyyttä historialliseen maamerkkiin.

Full text
Abstract:
Architectural competitions are no longer simply professional praxis for architects and a recurrent exercise for students at schools of architecture. The competition has also turned into a field of research, and this book is part of an effort constituting the architectural competition as a field for studies with scholarly claims. The first doctoral dissertations on competitions were presented in the 1990s in Europe. Another clear manifestation of research interest is the growth and spread of scholarly conferences on architectural competitions.   The contributions to the book show in a convincing way that the architectural competition is an interesting and rewarding object for research. The competition processes bear rich empirical findings to which one may refer for knowledge about architecture as professional practice, as educational subject and research platform. The architectural competition illustrates processes of change in society that are technical and organizational as well as social; it shows up constructive dilemmas, the borderline of rationality and the relative, creative insecurity of knowledge production in architectural projects.

Buhlfaia, Saeid Ali. "Historical Background Of Libyan Mosque Architecture: Assessment And Criticism Of Mosques In Ajdabiya City." Master's thesis, METU, 2008. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12607855/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The study attempts to trace the development of mosque architecture in Islamic history, in modern architecture in the world, specifically focusing on the history of the mosque in Libya. It investigates whether the conformity of mosque components and finishing is due to historic, current and local Islamic prescriptions
due to functional purposes and necessities, or merely as an imitation of the stereotype styles for loyalty to mental and habitual traditions regardless of functions. The main objective of this thesis is to study &lsquo
the lack of innovation&rsquo
in mosque architecture, especially in the Libyan case. The thesis investigates the factors which may have caused this phenomenon and attempts to explore whether there is possibility to innovate mosque design. For this end, the thesis analyzes and evaluates urban, spatial, architectural and performance properties of the existing mosques in city of Ajdabiya in Libya, the results of which are expected to help architects in developing the innovations in mosque design. Finally, the study asserts that acceptance of innovation is possible under the given circumstances: there are differences from one mosque to another, there are variations of mosque elements in terms of type and form, already varying from region to region. The main reasons for the absence of innovations are found to be due to unqualified designers who lack creativity, fear for the vulnerability of the heritage and some misconceptions and misinterpretations in terms of religious prescriptions.

Warleigh-Lack, Christopher. "John Carr of York and hidden architectural histories." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2013. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/21166/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of my study is to explore previously overlooked and therefore hidden eighteenth-century architectural histories using the lens of John Carr of York (1723-1807). This can help elucidate our understanding of, and challenge accepted ideas around, architectural histories that traditionally have a London based, stylistic, gendered or elitist class bias, coupled with an exclusive view of the practice of architecture based on the great drawing offices of premier architects such as Carr’s peers Robert Adam and Sir John Soane. By using John Carr of York in this way we can see that there are alternative architectural histories that exist in conjunction with and not in opposition to, these established ideas. In particular, the hidden architectural histories I focus on include the role of women as architectural practitioners and patrons, the accuracy of the previously held view of who eighteenth-century architectural patrons were and subsequently the influences upon them, and the role of the architect within the professional function.

Abstract:
Ensimmäiset kirjalliset maininnat löytyvät jo Kreikan mytologiasta (Herkules olisi avannut reitin kulkiessaan Hebreidien puutarhaan) ja Janus linnoituksen juuressa Hannibalin norsut kulkivat (218 eKr.). (Via Heraklia). Vanhin löydetty kolikko on roomalainen vuodelta 297 eKr.. Julius Cesar, legioonineen, marssi kukkulan kautta valloittaakseen Gallian (58 eKr.). Valtaosa dokumenteista on julkaisemattomia. Projektiosa jakautuu kahteen: restaurointi- sekä entisöintiosaan (etelä-lännen puoli) ja uuteen museo / auditorio- osaan (itä-pohjoisen puoli). Haasteena on, yleisilmeittä muuttamatta (museoviraston vaatimus), yhdistää uutta vanhaan ja luoda uudiskäyttöä linnoitukseen, sen historian jatkeeksi.

Larson, Julia. "Understanding a Historic Downtown as a “New” Vernacular Form: Immigrant Influence in Woodburn, Oregon." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/19297.

Full text
Abstract:
What does historic preservation mean in a historic downtown with a long-standing immigrant population? With 90% of the business owners in the historic downtown identifying as Latino, Woodburn, Oregon presents the convergence of historic preservation advocates and Latino business owners. Some stakeholders view historic preservation as maintenance to preserve what exists, while some view preservation as restoring a building to its build date aesthetics. This thesis addresses what the field of preservation and the stakeholders in Woodburn value and how that causes conflicts when dealing with preservation efforts. The main method employed for study in this thesis was collection of qualitative data through interviewing historic preservation advocates, city officials, and Latino business representatives. By understanding Woodburn as an example of a “new” vernacular form, the analysis explores how the community of Woodburn can negotiate its regional dynamics to create a local distinctiveness, which includes a many-layered historical narrative.

However, the critical enquiry and propaganda of the Italian architect and historian about so-called “organic architecture” reveals a major cultural debt to Le Corbusier. In 1945, Zevi published “Verso un’architettura organica” [Towards an organic architecture], the first version of his history of architecture. The title is clearly a polemical reference to Le Corbusier’s book “Vers une architecture” (1923). In 1977, together with other architects, Zevi promoted the Machu Picchu Charter, a document to “update” the Athens Charter (1933). The places held significance: Athens was the birthplace of western civilization and architectural rationalism. Machu Picchu symbolised the contribution of an alternative way of viewing the world. Are those merely examples of Zevi’s provocations? The relationship between Zevi and Le Corbusier is problematic and ambivalent. Zevi adopts the educational and communicative methods of Le Corbusier and his critical writing style, but his interpretation of the French-Swiss architect also demonstrates an attempt to delineate a new concept of “organic architecture”, related to his researches on a historiographic redefinition of the Modern Movement. Abstract:
This paper presents how complex system architecture lifecycles, such as that of cars, follow a similar S-curve shaped path as that of individual technological innovations. By applying this theory we show that today’s automotive industry has started a new chapter of architectural competition with similarities to its early history from 1885–1915 when steam, electric and internal combustion engine cars were competing to dominate the automotive market. Taking a historical perspective, we find that firms that organize their development activities to focus on bringing about architectural innovation are better placed in succeeding in the future market until a new dominant architecture emerges. The architecture lifecycle framework used in this study is constructed by means of a performance index. The index scores the performance of 91 cars of various architectures based on five overall system variables: power, weight, maximum velocity, fuel efficiency and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Depicting architectural performance over time helps identify periods of architecture competition and dominance where historical agents to change can be identified. The key factors that brought about architectural competition in the early 1900’s involved a series of innovation breakthroughs in engine and fuel technologies. Today, a new wave of power train innovations is being triggered primarily by environmental regulatory demands to reduce vehicle emissions. Future research lies in presenting a methodology for selecting vehicle architectures early on in the product development cycle that are best suited for the market going forward based on a manufacturer’s goals and a cost-benefit analysis.

Abstract:
At the moment there are few comprehensive texts or instruments that allow architects, designers, historians, planners or even students the ability to understand the complex layers of a city’s urban fabric. As a result, this paper was prepared in order to be uploaded to a digital tool that allows for such exploration of the built environment. The transformation of the city of Rome is documented in a number of sources and as a result makes it the ideal city for study of architectural and urban evolution. As a case study in digital documentation this paper examines the medieval façade porticoes of Rome at three scales: urban, architectural, and detail. The identification and mapping of these structures, are shown together allowing one to examine them in relation to historic and present day city maps. In addition, their location is analyzed in relation to ancient Roman streets and historic processional routes, to observe the connection amongst their location and that of major thoroughfares of antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. At the architectural scale, the detailed documentation in plan and elevation reveal four distinct variations that existed in the use of the residential façade portico. At the scale of architectural detail, an inventory of reused architectural elements or spolia that make up the residential porticoes reveal the reuse of ancient Roman column shafts, bases and capitals as well as the medieval masons’ preference for the use of the Ionic capital in particular. This paper prepares a methodology for digital deployment of traditional scholarship focused on architecture and the built environment.

Abstract:
Studies for the Historical-Critical Analysis of a Historical Center. The Case Study of Castel CamponeschiAim of the paper is the historical-critical study of Castel Camponeschi (aka Castello di Prata), a village at about 25 km from L’Aquila city (Italy), with peculiar urban characteristics –a herringbone pattern– probably founded in the thirteenth century and characterized by important phenomena of modification and stratification. The study roots on the direct analysis of the built heritage through the architectural surveying, realized at multiple scales from the urban settlement to the masonry structures. According to the morphology of the historic center, it could be traced to the process of new settlement foundation that characterized the territory –the border between the Papal State and the Frederic’s Empire first, and then the Angevin kingdom–. The analysis of the village requires both a correlation with the natural and anthropic historical context in which it is inserted and, a specific study of masonry equipments, characterized by the re-used of stone elements from the nearby Vestino-Roman town of Peltuinum.

Abstract:
History is the space of the time and also an accumulation of knowledge. This accumulation transforms into layers, layers provides knowledge. Also, historical envaronen has undeniable importance due to knowledge it has especially when it comes to architecture. Historical enviroment is like an architectural laboratuary which provides knowledge from past to present. That gives the reason why historical environment should be analyzed, preserved, rehabilited and restored in the first place. Sustainabilty of the knowledge can be supported by studying historical enviroment in every field. The main focus of this reasearch is integrating Baslica of Agora in Smyrna into today by analysing its cultural, historical and physical situation. Before the integration of the Basilica, information should be gathered and documentions related to the building and its close vicinty should be concluded. Documentation generated (measured and drawn) of the whole basilica in order to develope intervention decisions on scientific platform in any scale. Therefore, intervention orders took place on both whole basilica and the main intervention part of basilica as a modulatible scale. Basilica of the agora in Smyrna ancient city which has never been architecturally studied, documanted by using advanced technics surveying methods. Using all the data from documentation and academic studies 35. and 36. axles of the basilica determined to be the definite place where intervention orders –determined by analitical studies on whole scale of the basilica and detailed studies on the axles- took place.

Historic-geographical and Typo-morphological assessment of Lefke town, North Cyprus Sanaz Nezhadmasoum¹, Nevter Zafer Comert² Department of Architecture. Eastern Mediterranean University. Famagusta. North Cyprus.Via Mersin 10. Turkey E-mail: sanaz.nezhadmasoum@gmail.com, nzafer@gmail.com Keywords: Historic-geographic approach, Typo-morphology, Urban form, Lefke town Conference topics and scale: Urban morphological methods and techniques Morphological analysis in cities have been employed to conduct the research on the urban form and fabric of the place, that helps to determine the conservation plans or strategies of towns that reveal clues to their own history (Whithand,2001). Such analysis methods are a process that reviews the evolution and evaluation of towns throughout history. This paper focuses on, Conzen’s and Caniggia’s ideas, MRG Conzen’s historic-geographical approaches (1968) on planning level and Caniggia’s typo-morphological process (2001) on architectural level. Those methodologies help to understand the transformation procedure of different regions of city throughout the years and recovering how the city elements and urban hierarchy are interrelated. Additionally, the focus of this paper is to study the town’s morphological transformations, regarding its spatial, geographical and historical combinations. Within this context, Geographical and historical surveys done on the whole town of Lefke, in north-west Cyprus, and a detailed explanation on the typo-morphological analyses of some particular regions will be given in this article. One of the significant character that makes the town unique is its historical background which lay down with an organic urban pattern from Ottoman period. Lefke town was first formed with a medieval character, and through centuries of functional and physical transformations, has been highly influenced by British extensions, which were either prearranged modifications affected by socio- natural, economic, and political situations, or instinctive and spontaneous changes. All these historical factors, along with its geographical features, make Lefke an interesting case to be studied with an urban typo-morphological approach. Abstract:
Past urban planners, real estate speculators and myth makers have achieved the fantasy city of the future in Los Angeles. Based on the public dream of individualism and the desire for space, Los Angeles is a city inspired and created not by history but by future endeavors, speculative gestures, unlimited possibilities and fantasy. Rising from an agricultural village it has attained metropolis status through industries that promote and depend on myth; real estate development, tourism, film. Los Angeles has become the city it dreamed of being; a future city without historic connections and foundations. Without a sense of community, reality became image. The simultaneous development of the automobile and airplane fueled the growth and pattern of urban evolution in Los Angeles. Populated by individuals escaping their personal histories in the mid-west and east, Los Angeles became a city of newness with a civic lust for the new and a general acceptance that new is better. This lead to city development without historic precedent, and a reliance on technology, first the automobile and airplane, later the computer. In the end the city resembles suburbia infinitum, a city of nowhere, without a center, egalitarian and without hierarchy. Over this pragmatic patterning lies the concern for architects today; to work from within to create a sense of place without responding to the historical models, but developing an event from fragments, estrangement and loss of connectivity.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the historical overview of the castles and forts and what are the rules and foundations on which they arose. Castles constitute tourist attractions at the global and local levels as well as studying the variables and elements of spatial organization, in addition to the concepts of urban development strategies for historical regions. Salah al-Din Citadel was elected in Cairo because of the historical and urban depth it carries today. By studying how it originated and what changes occurred on it after the explorations and excavations that are taking place (design and development strategies) and then the practical study and analysis of the results of the practical study (General conclusions). The aim of the study is to analyze the urban fabric of Salah al-Din Citadel and define indicators for the characteristics of spatial organization using the Geographic Information Systems Program (GIS) and (Space Syntax) analysis, as they have an impact on the development of city centers and their importance in shaping the urban body of the city in an attempt to reach the strategies for urban development and possible urbanization of historic city centers (especially the cities of the castles). From the review of studies that dealt with the study of the organizational characteristics of urban spaces, the research problem crystallized (The lack of a clear perception of studying the characteristics of the spatial organization of castles and their impact on the development of urban development strategies) and the research hypothesis was formulated with (The study of the characteristics of the spatial organization of castles affects the integration of the castle with its urban surroundings and its historical characteristics ). The research was based on the development of the elements of a theoretical framework on the characteristics of spatial organization and then applied in practice to the castle of Salah al-Din as a model.

Atkinson, Dan, and Alex Hale, eds. From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.126.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four headings: 1. From Source to Sea: River systems, from their source to the sea and beyond, should form the focus for research projects, allowing the integration of all archaeological work carried out along their course. Future research should take a holistic view of the marine and maritime historic environment, from inland lakes that feed freshwater river routes, to tidal estuaries and out to the open sea. This view of the landscape/seascape encompasses a very broad range of archaeology and enables connections to be made without the restrictions of geographical or political boundaries. Research strategies, programmes From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report iii and projects can adopt this approach at multiple levels; from national to site-specific, with the aim of remaining holistic and cross-cutting. 2. Submerged Landscapes: The rising research profile of submerged landscapes has recently been embodied into a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action; Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf (SPLASHCOS), with exciting proposals for future research. Future work needs to be integrated with wider initiatives such as this on an international scale. Recent projects have begun to demonstrate the research potential for submerged landscapes in and beyond Scotland, as well as the need to collaborate with industrial partners, in order that commercially-created datasets can be accessed and used. More data is required in order to fully model the changing coastline around Scotland and develop predictive models of site survival. Such work is crucial to understanding life in early prehistoric Scotland, and how the earliest communities responded to a changing environment. 3. Marine & Maritime Historic Landscapes: Scotland’s coastal and intertidal zones and maritime hinterland encompass in-shore islands, trans-continental shipping lanes, ports and harbours, and transport infrastructure to intertidal fish-traps, and define understanding and conceptualisation of the liminal zone between the land and the sea. Due to the pervasive nature of the Marine and Maritime historic landscape, a holistic approach should be taken that incorporates evidence from a variety of sources including commercial and research archaeology, local and national societies, off-shore and onshore commercial development; and including studies derived from, but not limited to history, ethnology, cultural studies, folklore and architecture and involving a wide range of recording techniques ranging from photography, laser imaging, and sonar survey through to more orthodox drawn survey and excavation. 4. Collaboration: As is implicit in all the above, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches are essential in order to ensure the capacity to meet the research challenges of the marine and maritime historic environment. There is a need for collaboration across the heritage sector and beyond, into specific areas of industry, science and the arts. Methods of communication amongst the constituent research individuals, institutions and networks should be developed, and dissemination of research results promoted. The formation of research communities, especially virtual centres of excellence, should be encouraged in order to build capacity.
