Kwon, Kyoung Eun 1974. "Filmic architecture : on motion perspective in architectural synthesis." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/28326.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 82-83).
This thesis is an inquiry into the potential of film as an extended perspective defined by the sequential juxtaposition of images. Based on the notion that linear perspective in Renaissance architecture was used as a formal tool for the poetic imagination, it is assumed that motion perspective used as a design tool would have a formative influence on the architectural design process and thence, on the final product, architectural space and the sequence of spaces. The project uses film theory as the conceptual framework from which to gain a better understanding of the fourth dimension (time) in the creation of architecture. Cinematic camera movements, which already have a syntax or patterned language are modified for defining specific geometries in the creation of built space. The program consists of a housing block and community center in East Boston, offering a variety of spatial types for experimentation. In the primary analysis, the site is observed through a series of camera sequences. In the design process these camera movements are used to generate a spatial geometry based on the relationship between camera and filmed space. For instance, the housing has a layered spatial configuration corresponding to the tracking shot used in the site analysis. Computer generated motion graphics (4-D motion perspective) are used in each step of conceptual design. A dialectic of observation and form-generation with camera sequences are repeated throughout the building using the syntax of other movie-based sequences. The thesis demonstrates the potential of cinematographic sequencing in architectural design, moving beyond the three-dimensional scenography of traditional perspective.

Abstract:
Discovery of the linear perspective of the Renaissance is momentous in terms of the appearance of a new &ldquo
way of seeing&rdquo
that is central to the &ldquo
subject&rdquo
and emergence of a &ldquo
subjective&rdquo
&ldquo
way of representing&rdquo
the world. With the assumption that &ldquo
perspective&rdquo
is a cultural constituent of the &ldquo
Renaissance paradigm&rdquo
that generates the representational notions of art and architecture, perspective is considered as a &ldquo
convention&rdquo
and a &ldquo
mode of representation&rdquo
that has been influential until the &ldquo
paradigm shifts&rdquo
in the nineteenth and twentieth century. With the influx of the modernist avant-gardes, &ldquo
subjective&rdquo
linear perspective is replaced with the &ldquo
instruments&rdquo
of the new paradigm, and &ldquo
parallel projection&rdquo
becomes the mere tool for the representation and production of art and architecture introducing a new &ldquo
objective&rdquo
structure. The aim of this study is to reawaken and reconsider perspective through the &ldquo
conventions&rdquo
and the &ldquo
aberrations&rdquo
it reproduces. In this context, the course in the curriculum of METU Department of Architecture entitled Arch524 Architecture and Different Modes of Representation is covered as a &ldquo
pretext&rdquo
for this study. The theoretical framework and the structure of the course has a great impact on this study, since the course reconsider Renaissance perspective and its architectural production in a new context
within the modern architectural space of METU Faculty of Architecture Building. Following the traces of the selective works from the final exhibitions of the course, creating &ldquo
illusionistic spaces,&rdquo
and recalling the subject &ldquo
participation,&rdquo
it is questioned how perspective is &ldquo
exhibited&rdquo
and how the architectural space is reproduced.

Abstract:
Architectural representation is much more than a process of transcription between a concept and the building; it is a tool that determines the very mentality and praxis of the architect. This thesis studies the technique of film montage through the work of Andrei Tarkovsky and the possibilities it offers to the process of architectural conception. A general outline of the development of the perspective tools of representation in architecture lead to an understanding of the significance of the cinematographic image in the context of the history of projection. Montage in the tradition of Surrealism placed an emphasis on the potential power of poetic evocation between its elements. Comparing the narrative forms of three film-makers, the "surrealist montage" of Luis Bunuel, the "intellectual montage" of Sergie Eisenstein, and the temporal modulation in the films of Tarkovsky, this thesis examines different ways to qualify cinematographic space which affect the spatial and temporal experience of the spectator and offer the possibility of a redefinition of ritual in architecture.

Abstract:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the latest development in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) Industry. This development can be used for planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of any facility. The majority of the users of BIM technology are architects. Although its benefits had been highlighted and underlined especially in comparison with older developments such us Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, its implementation is considered still in an early stage due to low adoption from architects. Right now in Sweden and more specifically in the Stockholm area, the construction sector is booming due to the increased demand for housing.  Thus, there is an increased demand for more houses in a shorter time. BIM is a technology that can enhance the society in terms of design and construction with regard to the building environment. This can be achieved by avoiding human errors, decreasing project costs, increasing the productivity and quality, and reducing the project delivery time. Moreover, BIM can assist the management team in maintaining and operating different facilities. The focus of this research is on the barriers to adopting BIM technology in architectural companies. Furthermore, the attempt will be to investigate the individual, organizational and technical aspects that affect BIM adoption.  This study will implement a qualitative research method by in-depth interviewing four professionals in the area of architectural design. This investigation will be driven by the main research question, which is: What are the barriers to adopting Building Information Modeling (BIM) in architectural companies?

Abstract:
The present dissertation intends to delve into the different features characterising the Meroitic palace named B1500, located at the foot of the Jebel Barkal, the “Sacred Mountain”, near the modern town of Karima (North Sudan). The building has been the major focus of the Italian Archaeological Mission started in the 1970s under the direction of Prof. S. Donadoni, and currently led by the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, under the direction of Prof. E. M. Ciampini. In particular, this dissertation aims to highlight the most important architectural features connected with the palace by analysing also the context in which it is located. The architectural elements composing the palace in fact doubtless reflect a deep Hellenistic influence and a strong capability of developing new formal elaborations. Some comparisons with other Hellenistic and Meroitic palaces are presented to illustrate similarities and differences between them and the palace subject of this thesis.

Dasgupta, Archi. "Towards a Unified Framework for Smart Built Environment Design: An Architectural Perspective." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/84347.

Full text
Abstract:
Smart built environments (SBE) include fundamentally different and enhanced capabilities compared to the traditional built environments. Traditional built environments consist of basic building elements and plain physical objects. These objects offer primitive interactions, basic use cases and direct affordances. As a result, the traditional architectural process is completely focused on two dimensions of design, i.e., the physical environment based on context and functional requirements based on the users. Whereas, SBEs have a third dimension, computational and communication capabilities embedded with physical objects enabling enhanced affordance and multi-modal interaction with the surrounding environment. As a result of the added capability, there is a significant change in activity pattern/spatial use pattern in an SBE. So, the traditional architectural design process needs to be modified to meet the unique requirements of SBE design. The aim of this thesis is to modify the traditional architectural design process by introducing SBE requirements. Secondly, this thesis explores a reference implementation of immersive technology based SBE design framework. The traditional architectural design tools are not always enough to represent, visualize or model the vast amount of data and digital components of SBE. SBE empowered with IoT needs a combination of the virtual and real world to assist in the design, evaluation and interaction process. A detailed discussion explored the required capabilities for facilitating an MR-based SBE design approach. An immersive technology is particularly helpful for SBE design because SBEs offer novel interaction scenarios and complex affordance which can be tested using immersive techniques.
Master of Science
Smart built environments (SBE) are fundamentally different from our everyday built environments. SBEs have enhanced capabilities compared to the traditional built environments because computational and communication capabilities are embedded with everyday objects in case of SBEs. An wall or a table is no longer just a simple object rather an interactive component that can process information and communicate with people or other devices. The introduction of these smart capabilities in physical environment leads to change in user's everyday activity pattern. So the spatial design approach also needs to be reflect these changes. As a result, the traditional architectural design process needs to be modified for designing SBEs. The aim of this thesis is to introduce a modified SBE design process based on the traditional architectural design process. Secondly, this thesis explores an immersive technology (e.g.- mixed reality, virtual reality etc.) based SBE design framework. The traditional architectural design tools mostly provide two dimensional representations like sketches or renderings. But two dimensional drawings are not always enough to represent, visualize or model the vast amount of data and digital components associated with SBE. The SBE design process needs enhanced capabilities to represent the interdependency of connected devices and interaction scenarios with people. Immersive technology can be introduced to address this problem, to test the proposed SBE in a virtual/mixed reality environment and to test the proposed 'smartness' of the objects. This thesis explores the potentials of this type of immersive technology based SBE design approach.

This study focuses on how real estate developers in Philadelphia view their responsibility to build housing units that are accessible to people living with disabilities. It relies on data collected by interviewing major developers who build several different types of housing, including high-end condominiums, university residential housing, mid-price townhouses, loft conversions, rehabilitation of historic properties, and affordable housing projects. The researcher finds that developers possess only limited knowledge about accessibility requirements. They do not regard people with disabilities as a submarket of consumers to whom they could sell their units. Interestingly, virtually all of them cited a family member or close friend with a significant disability, creating both awareness and an emotional connection to disability issues. Yet such personal connections did not necessarily prompt them to voluntarily add accessible features to their housing units. Instead, the developers acknowledged that government regulations are the spur that can oblige them to build more accessible housing. Surprisingly, they expressed less antagonism toward such regulations than the researcher expected. In general, their view was that if such regulations force all developers in the greater Philadelphia market to incorporate accessible features and costs into their developments, then their individual firms will not be placed at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace.

Abstract:
Il danno totale è stimato approssimativamente all'1.5% GDP all'anno.
Abstract Vietnam is one of the five countries likely to be most affected by climate change. According to the report of EM-DAT (the Emergency Events Database), an estimated damage of $2,600 billion was caused by natural disasters damaged in the last twenty years (1994-2013). Flood alone accounted for 47% of all weather disasters, affecting 2.3 billion people (the majority of whom (95%) live in Asia). In Vietnam, about 649 natural disasters occurred in the last ten years (2005-2014), including flood, flash flood, hail, storm, cyclone and landslide. Total damage was estimated at approximately 1.5% GDP per year. There were 160 floods and flash floods occurred at that time and accounted for 58% of the total damage. In the future, climate change has increased the average surface temperature, changing the average rainfall, increasing frequency of extreme weather events and especially the rising of sea level that will increase flood risks and negative impacts of flooding to people and properties. Meanwhile, heritage is the quintessence of a long process of development by humans. The heritages that characterize the values of culture and history of each nation, country or region; but it does not have the ability to adapt to changes in the weather or disasters of climate change. The changes in the weather and disasters happen every year and they directly affect the heritage. Consequences have been cumulative and results are that some of heritages have been corroded, several heritages have been destroyed a part and a few heritages have been totally damaged. Facing that situation, if there are no adaptive solutions to adapt to the disasters of climate change, the heritages will be gradually lost. Although Vietnam does not have more disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, country has influenced heavily by disasters related to water factors, such as flood, tsunami, hurricane or drought. This research is the study of the relationship between climate change and heritage, impacts of flooding on heritage and building the map of flood risk for heritage system in Quang Tri Province. The map showed that 87.5% of the heritages are located in flood risk area (189 in 216 heritages) and 4.2% of the heritages are located in high and very high-risk level. Solutions to response and adaptation to climate change for the heritages have been studied and proposed. Characteristic of flooding is usually happening on a large scale and keeping in 2 or 3 days. Therefore, to reduce flood risks for heritage, the solutions were developed based on spatial planning, urban planning, urban design and architecture design for heritage, corresponding to three steps: direction, storage and absorption. Although the solutions are not mostly complete, the adaptation requires time to application and filter in order to select the most effective solutions for practical application. In addition, the research is not only a basis for conservation but also a long-term orientation for design and urban planning toward sustainable development.

Rice, Susan Janis. "Sketching to learn, learning to sketch: students' ways of sketching in architectural designing." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/8148.

Full text
Abstract:
Architects when sketching take time to pause, to look, to sketch, to look and sketch again. Described by some as the passing of an idea, a place or an experience from eye to mind to hand, the act of sketching is a means by which architects come to see and to understand the unfolding outcomes of their designing and make sense of aspects of the world. For many practitioners, scholars and eminent architects, sketching is fundamental to their architectural disposition and an integral part of thinking in an architectural way. To become architects, students need to learn this kind of sketching and few students in the early years of their studies are able to sketch in this way. Experience in teaching reveals architecture students are able to produce sketches, yet many struggle to grasp how to use their sketching as an integral part of their thinking and of progressing their designing. Far too rarely is using sketching an explicit focus of teaching and learning in the design studio. This research is directed towards understanding the different ways students are sketching when designing, on the basis that understanding these ways provides a useful and appropriate basis upon which to found improvements in teaching and learning about sketching in the design studio. Synergies between architectural sketching, visual thinking and how students learn, give rise to an investigation into the ways students are sketching, its approach, the form and collection of the data, the tools of analysis and means of interpretation founded on what is shared. The phenomenographic perspective on teaching and learning (Marton and Booth 1997) provides a means to analyse students' sketching, its iterative and interwoven cycles of considering, discovering and reinterpreting, suited to making sense of and seeing below the surface of the loose, searching and at times unclear design sketching. The analysis findings identify and describe differences in what and how students are sketching and are synthesized into a visual framework of 'palettes', describing three different and increasingly complex ways students are sketching. Using the descriptive framework in the studio offers students and teachers, through the understanding it depicts and the language it provides, opportunity to see, to make sense of, to compare, to complement, to improve and to discuss their own sketching and the sketching of others, and in so doing provides a means by which to help bring sketching into being an explicit focus of the day to day exchanges which lie at the core of learning in the design studio. Consideration is given to how teaching and learning in the studio might change were sketching to take this focus.

Rushton, Nan Michelle. "An Exploration of Visual Sensations: The Use of Depth Perception to Create Pre-Architectural Forms." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35699.

Full text
Abstract:
This exploration is one artist's view of visual reasoning through the study of depth perception. The experiment searched for pre-architectural forms through an investigation of geometric rectangular shapes and planar figures in anticipation of finding architectural volumes, that is, three-dimensional objects. I used three parameters to observe: the expected or planned, the anticipated, and the unforeseen. The pre-architectural sketching style used the disciplines of painting, sculpture, graphic arts, color theory, optics, and photography to formulate an architectural language. First, as artist (painter), I selected the medium of light as the brushstroke, color as the pigment, and photographic film plane as the canvas to capture image abstractions. Second, I used one-point perspective as the viewer's line of sight. Finally, I employed a series of shape abstractions to form a succession of transparent sections that composed the subject matter. This experiment sought to analyze visual perception by capturing the spatial depth of images, that is, a reproduction of something sculptural in likeness. The challenge was to reintegrate the abstracted Rectangular Shapes and Planar Figures. In order to achieve this physical abstraction, I created a modified camera obscura. This exploration produced clearly defined images-as-products that were interpreted as pre-architectural forms, which allowed me to translate color abstractions into architectural form studies, or models-as-products. Thus, the experiment created architectural volumes using light and color in order to draw points, lines, planes, and spatial depth.

Viklund, Emma. "Design approaches in industrialized house building : A creativity perspective." Licentiate thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, Industriellt och hållbart byggande, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-63034.

Full text
Abstract:
Industrialized house builders strive towards structure and control of their processes, including design. Such structure is seldom sought for in architectural design practice, where individuality and autonomy are considered essential. This is causing a tension in the construction industry as industrialized house builders and architects strive to improve their collaboration. In this licentiate thesis, a first step towards better understanding this tension is taken by exploring different design approaches from a creativity perspective. The analytical framework builds on a theoretical conceptualization of design approach features, including design task, design process, design organization, and knowledge sharing. A creativity perspective is added using heuristic or algorithmic design tasks; divergent or convergent design processes; autonomy or imposed structure from the design organization; and sole designer or teamwork as the basis for knowledge sharing. This framework is used to analyze four empirically explored design approaches, two focusing on platform development and two focusing on project specific design. Three of these are explored using a case study approach, while the fourth is explored through interviews with multiple architects. The architectural design approach’s features seem likely to facilitate creativity: the design task is mainly heuristic; the design process enables divergence; and the architects have autonomy in how to go about the design process. However, they experience a lack of knowledge sharing, which could further facilitate creativity. The studied standardized design development approach has the opposite features: the design task is mainly algorithmic; the design process facilitates convergence; and there is a clear structure with instructions of how each subtask should be executed. Hence, this design approach is not likely to facilitate creativity (which was also not its intention). The structure has however improved the design team’s knowledge sharing, which is likely to facilitate creativity. The two platform development approaches have a mix of features. Both design tasks are more algorithmic than heuristic and creativity was not expected of the design results. The design processes are clearly convergent. While the house platform development team is multi-functional and work in close collaboration, the design automation platform developers’ knowledge sharing is based on communication with the client’s organization, thus not enabling as many perspectives on the designed product. The design automation platform developers use a support structure with process descriptions and methods to ensure quality, motivated by the variety of platforms that they develop on a regular basis. The house product platform developers on the other hand, were expected to develop only this one platform. Hence, they worked autonomously, using the teamwork setting to progress and converge in the process. In summary, the creative intention seems related to how design is approached. If creativity is sought for, the design task is heuristic, and divergence and autonomy is promoted. If creativity is not sought for, structure seem to facilitate other benefits such as reliability and quality control. Knowledge sharing could however be potentially beneficial in most design approaches. By understanding that different design approaches will influence creativity in different ways, a first step has been taken towards understanding why architects and industrialized house builders approach design differently.

Ekstedt, Mathias. "Enterprise architecture for IT management : a CIO decision making perspective on the electrical power industry." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Electrical Systems, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-36.

Full text
Abstract:

Within the electric power industry, the average company's enterprise system - i.e. the overall system of IT related entities - is today highly complex. Technically, large organizations posses hundreds or thousands of extensively interconnected and heterogeneous single IT systems performing tasks that varies from enterprise resource planning to real-time control and monitoring of industrial processes. Moreover are these systems storing a wide variety of sometimes redundant data, and typically they are deployed on several different platforms. IT does, however, not execute in splendid isolation. Organizationally, the enterprise system embraces business processes and business units using as well as maintaining and acquiring the IT systems. The interplay between the organization and the IT systems are further determined by for instance business goals, ownership and governance structures, strategies, individual system users, documentation, and cost.

Lately, Enterprise Architecture (EA) has evolved with the mission to take a holistic approach to managing the above depicted enterprise system. The discipline's presumption is that architectural models are the key to succeed in understanding and administrating enterprise systems. Compared to many other engineering disciplines, EA is quite immature in many respects. This thesis identifies and elaborates on some important aspects that to date have been overlooked to a large extent. Firstly, the lack of explicit purpose for architectural models is identified. The thesis argues that the concerns of a company's Chief Information Officer (CIO) should guide the rationale behind the development of EA models. In particular, distribution of IT related information and knowledge throughout the organization is emphasized as an important concern uncared for. Secondly, the lack of architectural theory is recognized. The thesis provides examples of how theory, or analysis procedures, could be incorporated into the Enterprise Architecture approach and hereby concretely drive the development of the architectural models. Due to the nature of enterprise systems, EA theories inevitable will be of an indicative character. Finally, in relation to the models as such, three aspects are highlighted. Firstly, the cost of collecting information from the organization to populate models is routinely neglected by the EA community. This expense should be evaluated in relation to the utility of analyses that the information can provide in terms of better informed decision making by the CIO. Secondly, models (and meta-models) must be kept consistent. And thirdly, the design of models is restricted by the limited mental capabilities of the minds of the model users. CIO concerns must consequently be easy to extract from the Enterprise Architecture models.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work has been to investigate how housing can be designed to be more sustainable and to design a sustainable collective housing based on the information obtained through this work. The concept of sustainability in this report has been divided into two main aspects: ecological and social sustainability. Based on literature studies, our own surveys as well as observations of other collective housing projects and sketch work, a housing has been designed that meets some of our predetermined goals. These goals mainly revolve around the design being: sustainable based on certain chosen aspects, practical to live in, and appealing to people by offering some comfort and respecting the residents’ need for privacy. The literature study includes information about collective housing, the history of collective housing in Sweden, existing implementations of collective housing, surveys, and requirements in BBR (Boverkets byggnadsregler). Subsequently, observations of other collective housing projects have been made to serve as a starting point of the design. The method includes the approach used to achieve the results. This includes the survey and the sketch work that led to the final design. The survey was sent out to and answered by one hundred people and the data received from the seventeen questions have served as a basis for the design of this project. The suggestions for functions that were received by the respondents have been of particular importance to inspire the choice of functions in the final design. Among other things, these led to the choice to include an outdoor gym. Two prototypes of collective housing were profiled during the sketch work, which were then abandoned in the process of designing something that better lived up to the goals of the project. The final design resulted in a building divided in three floors that includes six collective apartments with additional common rooms that are shared between the apartments. The site plan shows two of the designed collective housing buildings sharing a courtyard. In addition to the fact that it has been possible to establish that collective housing has certain implicit positive advantages, certain specific attributes which make a collective more sustainable. The basic benefits of collective housing include that it can reduce social isolation and bring benefits for the environment by reducing our collective consumption and use of space. Specific design choices that have proved to be more sustainable and have been included in this design are: Minimized living space per person and a high number of shared spaces, as well as features in the accommodation that encourage sharing. In order for the accommodation to also take into account people's preferences, the bathrooms have for example been made private. Some compromises have been made in the design of the accommodation in order to appeal to more people, who can hopefully become more open to this form of housing.

Abstract:
This study examines how customer heterogeneity can be a useful resource for innovations in service sector. Heterogeneity among customers can be seen in relation to their needs, knowledge and relationships with the service provider. Using the dynamic capability view, this study states that firms require knowledge integration capabilities to identify, capture and combine customer heterogeneity related knowledge with firm’s know how. Successful knowledge integration leads to innovations and ultimately enhanced firm performance. The findings of this study assist managers to view customer heterogeneity as a resource rather than a problem to mitigate.

Kim, Hoyoung. "Conceptual expression and depictive opacity: Changing attitudes towards architectural drawings between 1960 and 1990." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/54363.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of a remarkable change that came about in the kind of drawings that architects used to present their work between the decades of 1960 and 1990. Drawings in this period, visually rich and compositionally complex, seemed to mark an entirely new sensibility towards their function; their goal seemed to be not so much to clearly depict the forms of a proposed building, but to instead focus on its conceptual aspects. In fact, in several cases, drawings seemed to be treated as graphic projects in their own right, over and above the work they presented. This trend was accompanied by two other developments. Around the same time, there was a sudden increase in theoretical interest in drawings within the architectural community leading to a flurry of published articles, essays and books on the topic. And all this happened to coincide with the time that the Postmodern movement came to dominate architecture. The study aims to understand the relationship between these trends, and to develop a better understanding of the reasons for these changes to have occurred. It does so by, first, developing a theoretical framework to help understand the nature and impact of the changes in drawings. Next, it presents a detailed historical account of these changes. This is followed by an in-depth study of a single architect, James Stirling, to show how the new types of drawings were not simply a means to present ideas, but played a formative role in design as well. Apart from developing a contextualized historical account of an important development in contemporary architectural history, the study also finds that the change in the drawing practice and the theoretical interests were not simply an outcome of Postmodern cultural theory of the period, but were instigated by concerns that arose from within architecture itself. It thus offers a useful case-study on how changes in disciplinary practice are brought about.

The physical environment in schools is an important factor that benefits the educational quality and has an essential role in the student's learning process. In the Philippines the physical environment is underdeveloped in the schools, since the main focus is on developing a basic foundation and on making sure that every child can go to school. This thesis studied the classrooms' physical environment in three selected schools in the Philippines. It presents improvements of the classroom’s physical environment. This study can be used as indicative guidelines when designing classrooms in the Philippines. This study is supported by the Minor Field Study scholarship, founded by SIDA.

Abstract:
One's way of travel dictates one's perception of the surroundings; People's mode of transportation has also evolved greatly throughout the ages. From foot traffic to carriages, to cars and trains, we tend to travel in faster paces, on increasingly linear paths, and with less freedom to wander. In my opinion, it is starting to become difficult to appeal to this emerging group of moving spectators with traditional ways of building. In my thesis, I explore ways to design buildings that focus on creating perspectival images for the moving spectators who are traveling on modern transportation.

The purpose of this thesis is twofold: first is to describe the current Marine Corps fire support system as an overall architecture and the second is to provide teaching materials for the Joint C3, (Command, Control, Coordination) curriculum. The emphasis will be to identify and illustrate the various command, control, and coordination procedures that are evident throughout the system. The system architecture described will provide a foundation from which the student will be required to design their own conceptual architecture. The command and control architecture of the fire support system is presented. A detailed analysis of the underlying C2 processes of the structure is conducted. A case is developed that will encourage the student towards the application of C2 concepts and principles. The author concludes with description of methods used to evaluate an architecture.

Abstract:
The written portion of this investigation gathers materials and information that deals with the conception of the family unit and the house that is literally, and metaphorically, utilized in the notion of home. This focus on the structure as a metaphor for home has further reaching implications than the structure itself. Findings show that a Western view of community and belonging is rooted in a place of stability in one's community. The basis for personal growth within that community has a direct impact on an individual's development in it. (Goldburgh, 67) The fractured nature of my experience and emotions tied with the notions of home, are expressed through both A Home Divided and the Chez Moi series photographic series. Within this investigation there are references to the artist's memories and experiences that are in contrast and discord with the traditional concept of acceptance and belonging.

Abstract:
In the field of urban planning, environmental psychology studies human relationship to places and settings, which are then categorized as the public's identities, attachments, and dependencies. Of interest to city planning, these findings can also be utilized in a design methodology. By giving particular attention to civic programs, this thesis presents a model for multi-scalar architecture and construction of place meanings. With urban, political, and historic networks contributing to place categories, ecological evolution provides developmental trajectories that can then be manifested through architectural design in civic and cultural institutions within city centers. From site selection through the design and execution of the project, the precedence is led by the people of past, present, and future, and the spaces they celebrate. The following is about the County of Arlington Civic Center, a multi-scalar perspective and design.

The heart of this thesis is an interpretive rendition of a series of Interviews conducted in various departments of the World Bank and th e U.S. Agency for International Development. These presentations are neither formated as quotations nor as excerpted transcripts. They most definitely are not a 'reporting exercise'. They are a composite of very many things. Besides my personal Interpretations of the interviews, they Include random snatches excerpted from conversation between the respondent and colleagues who would pop their heads around the door during the discussions, inferences drawn from telephone conversations that Interrupted Interviews, observations drawn from the way In which different people Interpreted the basic scenario I presented them with at the start and how they chose to develop the subsequent discussion, and inferences made about what people were actually saying and what they really meant. To that extent, at least, this part of the thesis Is a personal account of a journey through these two organizations. It Is an image gleaned, nothing starting in itself perhaps, but none the less a record of a passage through the lablrynthine corridors of two International development agencies engaged In the field of funding Urban shelter programs in developing countries. Essentially It is structured in three parts. The first introduces the origins of this thesis and discusses some aspects of the "quantitative-qualitative" debate that purports to exist in evaluative theory, arguing for a 'middle of the road' resolution. The second part of the thesis Is a presentation of my Interpretations of the discussions that I had at the Bank and at AID. This Is presented more In the nature of a soliloquy, with an attempt to put myself In the place of the Interviewee, and repay what they said If I had said it. The concluding part then takes a brief look at the theory behind Institutional learning, and attempts to pull out some of the Issues that came out of the interviews, so as to come to a 'conclusion', not necessarily a conclusive conclusion, but a presentation of the Issues residual In my find at the end of this process. This thesis has it's starting point In an Interest in the field of evaluation. In the process of inquiry into this field, In irs relationship to aspects of development and shelter and the Interventions driven primarily by International funding agencies, certain shifts In perspective occurred. The Initial focus of the inquiry was intended to be on the various techniques of evaluation, with the intention of probing, first, for potential linkages between these techniques and the various housing strategies I believed had been espoused over time by international donors. Secondly, it was originally intended to seek to juxtapose the quantitative-qualitative debate, and to inquire into th e relative worth, effectiveness, and contextual appropriateness of each. And finally, it was seen as a vehicle to explore the myriad issues that surround the reality that is the act of project evaluation. In the process of delving into the labyrinthine corridors of the field, two things happened . First came the realization, that technique, per se, is a meaningless phenomenon. It does not matter how its done, what matters Is why and for what purpose. In that sense, at least, the end became more important than the means. It was realized that the primary consequential reason for evaluation was to learn lessons. Or conversely, that the only way to learn lessons was through some process of evaluation, however it may be defined. This realization was followed by a quick dip into literature on the· variOus theories of organizational learning. But soon enough, given the esoterlcity and jargon that veils much of such literature, I was led to question the purpose of institutional learning itself, which was seen to be to improve the long term performance of the organization. This shifted the focus of the thesis to the issue of organizational effectiveness.

Abstract:
This thesis is an architectural investigation of perception, depth and representation. It explores the changing historical relationship between "two-dimensional" representation and architecture in an effort to understand the effects of modern perspectival depth on the making of architecture. The non-perspectival, medieval representations studied in this paper, are not looked upon as primitive forerunners of renaissance perspective, but as being expressive of a completely different notion and location of depth. In an attempt to access this "other" depth, the move from nonperspectival to perspectival perception and representation is looked at in relation to the change in perceptual values, brought on by the move from the largely oral culture of the Middle Ages, to the increasing textual culture of Renaissance and Modern ages. Perhaps without the fixity, neutrality and disengagement inherent in both perspectival and textual perception, architectural depth might return to the active world of human experience.

Abstract:
Despite its emergence more than a decade ago, information architecture remains a problematic concept. A study of relevant literature suggests significant advocacy with inadequate supporting evidence on its existence, application or value. The available limited research evidence generally presents unsatisfactory information architecture experience. Notwithstanding the unresolved issues and reported unsatisfactory experience, information architecture continues to be referenced as an important information management issue. Hence this doctoral study sought to investigate it. In the first stage, the study set out to clarify the position of information architecture via a large scale postal survey of 294 organisations. The survey found that information architecture is being used in association with IS planning, particularly in organisations which position IT as a strategic resource, but perceptions on its two conventional key components vary. While application architecture is viewed as being useful for IS planning, corporate data model is seen as being more relevant to data management and project implementation. Both models are regarded as tools facilitating integrated information systems development. In the second stage of research, case studies on 6 large organisations were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of successful information architecture practice. The investigation reaffirmed application architecture's position as an IS planning tool and cast further doubt on corporate data model's role not only in IS planning but also in IS practice as a whole. Business area/project data model was identified as the pragmatic high-level data model for both application/database development and data management. A major finding of the case studies was on business system architecture, a pictorial model depicting IT in its business setting. It is seen as being of value for integrating IS planning with strategy development and business planning - a tool for fusing IT with the business. The case studies concluded that the value and effectiveness of information architecture is dependent on the targeting of its components - business system architecture, application architecture and business area/project data model - in terms of tasks and recipients. The case for a holistic approach to business/IS planning and implementation is currently being argued by a number of leading management and IS scholars. This thesis embraces the holistic approach and positions the (redefined) information architecture as a valuable tool in its implementation.

This thesis attempts to clarify the need for an appreciation of architecture theory within a computational architectural domain. It reveals and reflects upon some of the cultural, historical and technological contexts that influenced the emergence of a computational practice in architecture. To carry out this new reading, we focus on the pioneering research that underpinned the beginnings of the relationship between architecture and computation and which was carried out at four research Centres both in the UK and in the USA: The Land Use and Built Form Studies [LUBFS], founded at Cambridge, UK; The Center for Configurational Studies at the Open University, Milton Keynes; The Architecture Machine Group [AMG] at MIT, and the Design Research Center [DRC] at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. Moreover this thesis reinterprets the role of Leslie Martin as the founding father of LUBFS by showing the influence of the British physicist Desmond Bernal's building science research and the British avant-garde movement on Martin's work. This thesis also presents reflections on how best to use computation in architecture.

Abstract:
This dissertation provides a model, which focuses on Quality, Architecture, and Process aspects, to manage software development lifecycles in a sustainable way. Here, with sustainability is meant a context-aware approach to IT, which considers all relevant socio-technical units of analysis. Both social (e.g., at the level of the stakeholders community, organization, team, individual) and technical (e.g., technological environments coding standards, language) dimensions play a key role to develop IT systems which respond to contingent needs and may implement future requirements in a flexible manner. We used different research methods and analyzed the problem from several perspectives, in a pragmatic way, to deliver useful insights both to the research and practitioners communities. The Software Quality, Architecture, and Process (SQuAP) model, highlights the key critical factors to develop systems in a sustainable ways. The model was firstly induced and then deduced from a longitudinal research of the financial sector. To support the model, SQuAP-ont, an OWL ontology was develop as a managerial and assessment tool. A real-world case study within a mission-critical environment shows how these dimensions are critical for the development of IT applications. Relevant IT managers concerns were also covered with reference to software reuse and contracting problems. Finally, a long-term contribution for the educational community presents actionable teaching styles and models to train future professionals to act in a Cooperative Thinking fashion.

"Thesis presented June 1998, amended February 2000." Includes bibliography. V. I: text -- v. IIa: Figures -- v. IIb: Figures. This thesis demonstrates the falsity of the assumptions that ancient architects followed innate spatial cues or responses in their designs, that ancient people experienced the resulting buildings through the same responses, and that modern scholars can thus reconstruct both the intentions of the ancient architects and the architectural effects experienced by ancient visitors to ancient buildings throught the medium of their own spatial reactions. This underlying belief is contestable given its basis in unproven and untested late nineteenth century theories of perception. The thesis also demonstrates that the assumption made by modern scholars that the architects of the Forum of Pompeii were primarily concerned with uniformly enclosed space, axial symmetry, and orthogonality, is wrong, and is contradicted by the actual form of the buildings around the Forum.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the idea of perspective, specifically anamorphic perspective, and how anamorphosis can be applied to architecture. Anamorphosis is a distorted image that appears regular only from a certain point. With a focus on anamorphosis, perspectival drawings became the key component in the design of the library. Perspectives have been embodied in architecture; however, they remained limited to the realm of illusion, distinct from constructed reality. The library contains this duality of illusionism and realism. Similar to reading a book, one might get lost in the story, imagine themself as one of the characters, and question if they are in reality, or in the illusion of the book. To further enforce this falsehood, the library holds fictional books, ranging from fairy tales to mythological books. The library is constructed with three main corridors, which wrap around the inner core, an open-air courtyard. The corridors contain the illusion while the "reality" resides adjacent to these corridors. This gives the spectator a chance to witness the stage of the illusion and the behind-the-scenes of the illusion, the reality.

Barker, II James L. "In Search of Perspective: How We Understand Space Through Visual Horizons." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42355.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of perspective. Visual perspective invokes (thus creating) both understandings & misunderstandings of space through the use of depth. Depth in my opinion is perspectiveâ s ultimate aspiration; no great illustration or portrait of perspective can exist without an exuberant understanding of depth. Depth in architecture therefore becomes... [1] how the design & comprehension of space creates a volumetric understanding and sense of scale, and [2] how architecture can portray an intellectual understanding of its configuration and construction. . . A sort of architectural reality (to its representation).

Abstract:
Technological innovation has made huge strides and improved human living significantly in the last century. However, it has also brought unprecedented life-affecting challenges which could pose a problem of survival for the human race. Given the strong impact of architecture on human living and the environment, sustainable development as a theme in architectural education becomes crucial. This study aims to explore how architectural education can be improved to support sustainable development based on the insights gained from the perspectives of architectural practitioners in Hong Kong. A semi-structured, individual, in-depth interviewing method was used to solicit data from a total of eighteen practitioners, including professionals in architectural practices and academics in higher institutions, A data analysis model based on Attride-Stirling's thematic network analysis (2001) was adopted to identify key themes. Themes were developed to address five research questions, namely on the understanding of sustainable development; its relationship with architecture; the role of architects to promote sustainable development; programs of architectural education for sustainable development; and factors impacting change in architectural education for sustainable development.
