Abstract:
Formal architectural education in Bahrain is relatively young, born only at the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper discusses autonomy in learning architecture, and the effect of using a mixed methods approach combining theoretical and practical assignments on students’ performance and understanding of complex architectural concepts. The study discusses the performance and progress of 81 undergraduate students in the course of Contemporary Architecture. The paper presents the students’ learning process and engagement that occurred throughout the given assignments, theorizing about how students could build on these processes to support their understanding of contemporary architectural and urban issues. The research concludes that both theoretical and practical educations are very helpful in the learning process. Nevertheless, active learning offers distinct advantages to architectural education, especially when combined with group work. The study also shows that while students were able to plan, design and construct spatial installations, they were less capable of reflecting on their projects philosophically. The results indicate the importance of practical experiences in enhancing overall student understanding of architectural phenomena.

Digital technology has played a crucial role in architectural development since being introduced in. Different application of digital design software has taken the place of traditional drawing. The innovated architecture design process has promoted a trend of space complexity. Advanced digital technology also produced a new design method; the computer can generate a unique building plan through the special program directly rather than the imagination of the human brain. Besides, digital technology has a wide range of applications in exploring the future architecture development, as well as virtual reality in the scheme deliberation and demonstration. The digital architecture has broken through the two-dimensional architectural design pattern and the aesthetic consciousness of the industrial era, and pushes the building industry development greatly.

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an emerging reality for the architectural discipline. Our work over the past three years has been to demonstrate AI’s relevance for architecture. Among many aspects, AI fundamentally opens up access to a new approach to formal experiments through the concept of ‘latent space’. We believe this concept represents a radical improvement in generating architectural forms, and comes at a time when cities are pressurised by the burning challenges they face: ecology, urban densification, the rapid mutation of modes of living, etc. In return, architecture is charged to come up with new typologies, able to handle these pressing concerns. AI invites us to reinvest in formal research in order to design the habitat of tomorrow.

Abstract:
The increasing global concerns about the environmental degradation and climate changes oblige architecture students to apply sustainable design approaches in their studio projects. Therefore, renewable energy raises the expectation of providing sustainable solutions for their architectural design proposals. This paper aims to investigate the learning of students in knowledge, awareness and applicability on sustainability during their first three years of the part 1 architecture programme. Surveys were conducted on 500 students from eight architecture schools from the local universities, two architecture schools from the polytechnic colleges and three architectural schools from the overseas universities. These survey results from 335 respondents confirmed that the learning on sustainability through self (51.6%), peer (48.6%) and design studio lecturers (37.0%). These results confirmed also that most respondents did rely on pre-design assessments to develop sustainable design strategies in their final architectural design proposals. These results concluded that the perception of architecture students on learning sustainability is based mainly on other sources. These findings provide knowledge for educationists and practitioners towards the planning of architecture curriculum and the implementation of pedagogical approach in sustainability. This paper determines the most important source of learning on sustainability knowledge for students in the pedagogy at university level.

Abstract:
Ottoman and Turkish architecture have exhibited a constancy and change in the course of history. Nevertheless these changes can only be understood by taking architectural education into account. Here it will be tried to discuss the gains and losses between the increase in the degree of architectural education/specialized knowledge and the blindness to the value judgements of the society and their reflection on the Turkish architecture. The edifice can not be separated from the architect, architect from the society; society and education from the idea. An architect is educated by society. Architect in turn is the product of the common idea of the civilisation he or she is affiliated to. Even a small diversity in the depth of belief or change in the approach in life style brings a deviation in the understanding of arts and architecture consequently architectural education also experience gains and losses along with it.

Different care scenarios and environmental factors influence the behavior of a workstation. The common functional components of a workstation are information resources, application logic and presentation. A workstation is successful when each of its components operates within an information architecture and contributes to meet user needs. New technologies to integrate and display information are making the workstation functions independent of the actual hardware and software platform.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the graphic means deployed since the Renaissance to restore the appearance of ancient Roman architecture, and specifically with the use of various forms of perspective. Disdained by architectural theorists from Leon Battista Alberti onwards because of its supposed subjectivity, the perspective nonetheless became a valuable tool in the second half of the eighteenth century for studying Roman architecture and urban form in pristine condition. It remained so until, with the consolidation of a more scientific approach to the discipline of archaeology in the last third of the twentieth century, it was reduced to schematic form and supplemented by isometric and axonometric projectional restorations, notably in English-language histories. The discipline of architectural history has not, however, been well served by this development, and an argument is made here for the retention of perspectival restoration and for the furtherance of the recent development of restorations modelled with the aid of computers.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to move established positions in architectural design by discussing a more refined user perspective. The motivation is threefold. Firstly, fields like environmental psychology and cognitive science for architecture have in recent years brought novel insights on the embodied nature of human spatial experience, and the extensive effects of the built environment on people’s psychosomatic health and behaviour that are not well-captured by existing building standardization systems. Secondly, while the fast growing trends of user-centred and research-based design in architecture have showed that users’ experience is a valuable source of design knowledge, the methods for incorporating this wealth of new insights in the architectural design process are still underdeveloped. Finally, the example of the newly built psychiatric department in Aabenraa, Denmark, whose interior, despite an international architectural award in 2016, had to be re-designed one year after construction due to poor understanding of the users, indicates existing discrepancies in the current approaches to translating research information in user-centred design. To address these issues, we discuss the experiences from a new masters’ course in ‘Architecture, Health, and Well-being’ and propose that user-centred methods like ‘personas’ and ‘scenarios’ used in IT, marketing, and product development also have a potential to develop more in-depth research-informed user perspectives. As well as, to help students envision and strengthen the architectural quality of the programming and building design throughout the architectural design process, by supporting a ‘design empathic’ understanding and immersion in user perspectives.

Abstract:
This paper discusses how the tension between arts and science inherent in the discipline of architecture, can be traced in architectural representations, which are not neutral but actively contribute to the design process, ranging from highly poetic, subjective, and artistic to more exact and objective. Within this paper, we reflect on how to overcome this restrictive perspective implicit in conventional design media by comparing two elective courses that aim to broaden the traditional architectural perspective. In doing so, we take a position in the broader debate on the role of artistic practices within an academic learning environment.

Historiography marks a relatively unexplored research domain in architecture. Despite the obscure nature of this subject matter, architectural historiography equally illuminates a hidden pathway to the historical interaction of architecture with art or literature. Critical historiography adds another dimension to this emerging research topic that further encapsulates multiple levels of criticism. In recognition of a growing interest for historiography, it can be argued that the critical aspects of historiography may serve as crucial instruments for an enhanced understanding of architectural historiography. In this article, the realm of architectural historiography is investigated through a multidisciplinary perspective that revisits architectural criticism, critical historiography, modern architecture, phenomenology, and a number of aspects of architectural historiography in the Swedish Million Homes Program.

Abstract:
Abstract From the perspective of architectural research, globalization is often reduced to a merely recent phenomenon of construction firms and star architects operating worldwide today. This article argues for a global architectural history that examines the globally effective processes of exchange and circulation of capital, labor, and the increasingly unified standards of form, style, and material in building practice from a historical perspective as well: architectural globalization, therefore, can also be traced back, among other constellations, to a phase of an entanglement of the world that coincided with the height of European imperialism and colonialism around 1900. As a case-study serves in this essay the International Concession (Settlement) of Tientsin in China, where between ca. 1860 and 1945 altogether nine imperial powers from Japan, Europe (also the German Empire) and the USA developed their trading posts as veritable city quarters with representative architectures. Irony of history back-translated into present times: Today, these urban and architectural fragments from imperial pasts are being appropriated as an integral part of a veritable cultural heritage industry in which China itself, with the megacity of Tianjin, is now presenting itself as a global player, not least in the means of architecture and urban planning.

Abstract:
Cloud-native network design, which leverages network virtualization and softwarization together with the service-oriented architectural principle, is transforming communication networks to a versatile platform for converged network-cloud/edge service provisioning. Intelligent and autonomous management is one of the most challenging issues in cloud-native future networks, and a wide range of machine learning (ML)-based technologies have been proposed for addressing different aspects of the management challenge. It becomes critical that the various management technologies are applied on the foundation of a consistent architectural framework with a holistic vision. This calls for standardization of new management architecture that supports seamless the integration of diverse ML-based technologies in cloud-native future networks. The goal of this paper is to provide a big picture of the recent developments of architectural frameworks for intelligent and autonomous management for future networks. The paper surveys the latest progress in the standardization of network management architectures including works by 3GPP, ETSI, and ITU-Tand analyzes how cloud-native network design may facilitate the architecture development for addressing management challenges. Open issues related to intelligent and autonomous management in cloud-native future networks are also discussed in this paper to identify some possible directions for future research and development.

Abstract:
The paper examines Christian architecture from the perspective of “meta-codal function”, i.e. through examination of architectural symbolism expressed solely by architectural means. Emphasizing symbolic and semantic content of architecture, the paper offers a broader research field of architectural artistry by using a wider iconographic comparison. As a representative of baroque architecture and the most prominent example of architectural symbolism, St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Vilnius (1668–1702) has been selected for the research. The iconographic programme of this church is compared to most distinct iconographic themes identified through the analysis of some examples of historic Christian architecture. By this method, the research detaches from the usual stylistic analysis and poses the most basic question in architectural artistry: is architecture capable of expressing the independent artistic content which can translate more than architecture’s general appearance.

Abstract:
Which transformations does collective life experience, when nomadic people are systematically territorialized, settled for instance on the urban periphery of Ulan-Bator in Mongolia? Or which alterations does society undergo in the case of the rapid and massive urbanization in Central China today? The article is based on a sociological theory which argues for the socially constitutive potential of architectural artefacts: It sees architecture not as the ‘mirror’ of a given society, but rather as a mode of society itself. With this theoretical perspective, the article unfolds the methodological proposal of a comparative architectural sociology, contrasting four divergent architectural modes of collective existence. This comparative view, which is that of structural anthropology, aims to highlight the societal positivity of architecture (infrastructures and modes of settlement included), as well as current architectural changes of collectivities such as the urbanization of Central China, or the settlement of the Mongolian nomads. The article consists of four parts: In the first and second parts, the theoretical perspective and the comparative methodology are sketched. The third part contrasts four divergent architectural modes of collective existence, and the fourth and final part exemplarily discusses some architectural transformations.

This paper deals with the process of design in the context of the idea of energy conservation. We used analytical instruments in order to extract the principles and methods the architects used in their design as the solutions for passive design concepts. We narrowed down our research focus to the industrial architecture as a paradigm of the contemporary designs that is very much into the idea of green technology and energy conservation. As great energy consumers by their function, investors of the industrial buildings are justifiably interested in building a more energy effective building. There is a characteristic difference in the design of industrial architecture and the other types that also make passive design applications specific. Using the case study method and invert method of translation, we have examined the selected design projects. We tend to make some progress in the field of architectural design methodology, as a main area of application of our findings. The idea was to make the proposition of methodological principles extracted from the successful architectural practice for more rational and less time-consuming design method that has passive design component.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the color theory and the application of this theory in architectural design. Since the modernist architects and modern era in architecture, the colors of the buildings were not in the focus of their authors. On the contrary, the modern movement has taught us that color, and especially artificial one, is almost a crime to use and in a way, it expresses a lack of a style. Through examining universal color harmony principles in this paper the problem and phenomenon of using colors in contemporary architecture was discussed, which had its roots in the modern movement and evolved through technological advance especially in material technology. The industrial architecture is used as an example, to narrow down the research field, but also for the reasons of extensive and creative use of color in this type of buildings. We have examined several industrial buildings that have been systematized into three categories. All three categories are analyzed for the application of general color harmony principles. Then discussion focuses on refining principles of color usage in architecture that appear in contemporary architecture in order to systematize those principles, particularly important for architectural education and new practitioners of architecture. In conclusion, it is stated that universal color harmony principles are applicable in architecture as well, as in other visual arts.

A new exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montreal, QC), Eye Camera Window: Takashi Homma on Le Corbusier, investigates the practice of Japanese architectural photographer Takashi Homma (1962) and his exploration of the intrinsic similarities between windows and cameras in the way they mediate an experience, be it in a modernist dwelling or in a photograph recalling a memory. Homma’s photographs focus attention on the ‘eye’, the ‘camera’, and the ‘window’ in the way they shape perspective in intimate form. In a visual interpretation that uses the camera lens as an eye to witness new forms, Homma advances an argument of timelessness, providing intimate architectural perspectives on eternal vistas.

Abstract:
<p>The article discusses the possible value of a ”critical empiricism” as the forgotten ”other” of the well-established critical theory. Following Swedish sociologist Johan Asplund, critical empiricism is described as ”seeing what others have not seen”. The ”theoretical turn” in architectural research is questioned with the help of architectural historians Anders Åman and Mari Hvattum. The 1940s discussion of Swedish architecture as “new empiricism” introduces a strong relation between the Nordic welfare societies and their architecture as a characteristic also of Swedish architectural history.</p><p>The article presents a recent historiographical project by a network of Swedish architectural historians from universities and schools of architecture. One of the networks’ papers is about Gregor Paulsson’s book <em>Svensk stad </em>[Swedish Town], an “environmental history” with a pronounced sociological perspective and an ambition to influence Swedish post-war planning. Another paper discusses architectural history as the study of building categories, a firmly established tradition in Swedish architectural history, in this case with a fundamentally “functional” perspective. A third paper is a critical study of the 1970s turn from architectural history as a history of monuments to a history of the built environment in its broadest sense.</p><p>In conclusion, critical empiricism in architectural history is presented as a vigorous and necessary reminder of how society could be different in a time when humanities as well as planning are questioned by politicians.</p>

Architecture is a language, and this means that we understand each phrase in a language or text in it, which is built in our architecture. Texts have richness and complexity, and the openness of the architectural text ahead of the act of interpretation, lead to social interaction. Where the text reads in terms of reference, structure, and philosophical vision, and its variables, and comparing it with kinetic architecture as a product of the relationship between human behavior and kinetic waves which have considered a real revolution in architectural thought, where has changed the path of the architecture, where it changed the path of the architecture that has seen from the perspective of persistence and physical and formal stability on the ground to the perspective of movement, dynamism and the formal and positional changes of the building. The role of the process (time) has a significant impact on the kinetic architecture through which the movement can be, and it is an essential element of the movement's principles and conditions in its contemporary architectural formations. So the research aims to statement of the relationship of the text of the concepts of the text to the concepts of the system of human actions in being and its content becoming and process, against the system of architectural acts in the components of the text (reference structure, and philosophical vision), and reflect this relationship on kinetic architecture as a contemporary architectural formation to know its relationship with the text and its components

Abstract:
Abstract The ›Aachen School‹ of architectural history analyzes and interprets built structures with the holistic perspective of a trained architect. The first step is a very detailed investigation of the building, using the methods of Historical Building Research. At the same time, archival sources and structural considerations help to develop a clearer picture of a building’s original design concept and its development during the process of planning and realization. Based on this preparatory research, the focus is broadened, applying methods and discussing topics from the perspective of art history and architectural theory and integrating, if necessary, further interdisciplinary collaboration. The overarching premise is that architecture, beyond its time-bound historical condition, is also determined by essential timeless or metahistorical characteristics. These form an important level of knowledge for architectural historians as well as for architects. Architectural history, thus, is not a mere historical science, but also makes an important contribution to the general architectural discourse.

Abstract:
Studying and documenting traditional architecture in Jordan contribute greatly to defining a collective identity as traditional buildings represent an integral part of Jordan's cultural and historical identity. Through employing an ethnoarchaeological and architectural framework of analysis, this study seeks to identify and analyze the intertwined socio-economic, climatic, and environmental factors that had a critical influence on the development of traditional buildings and the accompanied shifts in the architectural style, role, and functionality during the 19th and 20th centuries in Northern Jordan. The rich diversity in building types in this region varies according to the area and people's lifestyles. Moreover, this variety is highly influenced by climate and availability of materials, in addition to building expertise and skills. Indeed, the noticeable changes in traditional architecture tell the cumulative history of the local communities who produced these types. The existence of more advanced architectural types in Northern Jordan demonstrates the influence of types from neighboring areas in Palestine and southern Syria.

Abstract:
Bali has written rules about building procedures which are traditionally are still used today. The rules are written in an ancient manuscript in the form of a palm leaf known as Asta Kosala Kosali (AKK). The AKK manuscript has been around since the arrival of the Aryans from the Majapahit kingdom to Bali, therefore the architectural products produced in this period are called Bali Arya’s architecture. Based on the contents of the AKK script, the disclosure of architectural knowledge is carried out using an architectural perspective in the context of construction. This perspective and context used show that this research is different from previous studies of the AKK manuscripts that use cultural, anthropological, and historical perspectives. This study places the AKK script as the main object of research, therefore the method used is to apply hermenetic operations or called interpretations. Through this research architectural knowledge can be formulated in the context of construction, namely; 1) the basic foundation of the construction process that is carried out is truth in the process, obedience to the principles of building and the achievement of pleasure in each stage and its results. 2) The principles applied in the construction process, technically is the assembly of construction components starting from the building body, applying the principle of strong columns -weak beams, prioritizing the sustainability of materials, construction and building, and using rational composition of regular geometric shapes to achieve beauty . 3) The basic concept as the ultimate goal of the construction process is the balance and harmony of the relationship between humans, nature and God. These three formulations are components of the building of Bali Arya’s architectural knowledge in the context of the construction process. Keywords: knowledge; construction process; Bali Arya’s architecture; interpretation

Abstract:
The research discusses the phenomenology of drawing details in architecture, approaching the drawings as a medium that carries poetic and technical aspects of architectural design and building. With digital technology advancements, a whole new set of terms and practices appeared that can be related to the changed notion of detailing in architecture. Addressing the problem of translation of architectural concepts into material practice, the research proposes a method for decoding the aspects of poetics of construction by overcoming the conventional representation techniques related to construction drawing, and introduces the combination of methods of interpretative 3D modelling and digital assemblage. By using tectonic theory as a theoretical framework, the research aims to define a new post-tectonic standpoint that can offer a unique perspective on the relation between design process, production and representation in architecture in the current moment. The new perspective outlines the poetical protocols in individual conceptual narratives of the selected authors, approaching the details in their work as a form of representational discursive images that could be interpreted as a microscale of macro ideas in the field of architectural design. The method of research is interpretative modelling that combines the analogue and digital techniques, and analytical drawings of the examples related to the discussed topic. By combining the digital and analogue approach, the aim is to offer a new perspective in the form of the dialectical model for interpretation of architectural detail that could offer new insights into contemporary tectonic discourse through which variant states of the poetical and technical design thinking could be decoded.

Abstract:
In this essay, I first argue for the importance of somaesthetics in thinking about “autonomy” and “atmosphere” in architecture in a manner that brings about a critical re-education. Refusing the strict distinction between these architectural approaches through a turn to somaesthetics, I then turn to Kant’s theory of reflective judgment to set forth discursive possibilities for arriving at some understanding of the concept of architectural atmosphere. Finally, I suggest ways in which somaesthetics and Kantian thought can be seen as mutually enhancing, rather than opposing each other.

Abstract:
This paper presents a contextual use of the innovative drawing techniques that involved architecture and painting in the Qing court during the first half of the eighteenth century. At this point architectural linear perspective in painting (quadratura) and stage design had become common fields of experimentation for the Chinese and Jesuit artists missionaries. In this conceptual context, Western quadratura was developed in China by Giovanni Gherardini. (1655–1729), and especially by Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), who is remembered as an extraordinarily versatile architect–painter. The focus of this paper is on the “illusory mural paintings of architectural perspective in Nantang Church” (Beijing), which has now disappeared, and which spread the influence of the Western Renaissance. The imported Western linear perspective and the fundamentals of architectural drawing facilitated the systematization and dissemination of the quadratura as an unknown technique in China. Based on the text described by the contemporary scholar Yao Yuan Zhi, an original interpretation of the architectural perspective mural paintings in Nantang Church is proposed. These paintings provide an important case study of Sino-European collaboration in the eighteenth century from different points of view: the representation of the light in drawings and the fact that the concept of shadow in some respects was unknown to the Chinese artist.

Abstract:
The research on The Initial Survey of Evolution of Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings in Thailand is aimed at constructing knowledge for the module named Reuse and Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings. This module is part of the curriculum of Bachelor of Architecture, which studies the role of architecture fabricated within historical buildings. In the era between 1997 and 2012 in Thailand, there was a notable transformation from conservation to contemporary conversion. A review of conservation perspectives indicates a combined multi-disciplinary cooperation between architectural design and conservation. To establish issues regarding the knowledge of conversion, a research question is raised: how do architectural elements play its role through changing of use? Aimed at understanding the complexity among conversion ideologies, issues surrounding architectural elements of historical buildings are rationally explored. Based on significant conversion projects from 1996 to 2012, architectural elements were referenced as to how concepts and objectives were associated. Qualitative research was conducted through a study of primary sources; survey and classification of representative samples, and secondary documents, records and architectural drawings. The controlling significance of the buildings led to a discussion and an analysis of the architectural designs through new additions and amendments made on the historical fabric. Included in this discussion are the principles of conversion as they relate to the architecture of historic buildings and the ideology of the modification. It is found that understanding a change to architectural elements through an ontological perspective, that of attachment and associational approaches, could clearly reveal the construction programme that felicitates the historical building for which conservation or adaptation is determined. A dialogue on relevant contexts surrounding amendments of architectural elements demonstrated that a strong emphasis towards particular objectives of use could coincidentally harm the historical building’s architectural dimension framework. This leads to the notion that architecture for adaptive reuse should include knowledge of the original construction, a balance among conditions of the existing building, its programming and further habitation.
