Full text
Abstract:
Exploring spatio-temporal flux within architecture, this thesis presents design-based research on the temporal environments of Oceania and Western evental theory. Oceanic thought and Western theories of the event share commonalities, both holding that space and time are inseparable dimensions. This spatio-temporal concept challenges Western philosophical and architectural doxa that privilege stasis over temporal flux, and offers a mode by which to introduce alterity into architectural discourse. I move over these cultural and philosophical grounds in order to explicate and further develop a personal design practice that is of this place and time for, while there is a body of writing that documents Oceanic built environments, there is less research that considers how these may be constituted and communicated through contemporary architectural design. The thesis posits two temporalised environments apparent within Oceanic spatial thought and practice – the shifting and extensive oceanscape, and the telluric groundscape that makes space; and describes two resultant spatial typologies – an oceanspace which is characterised by openness and mobility, and a groundspace which is both surface and space. These contentions are tested and theorised through three architectural experiments developed between 1999 and 2005: the Sounds House, which operates as an open and mutable spatial field; the Ground House, which forms monumental “interiors” that emerge from and relate to the earth; and Tokatea, which blends these two spatialities, fabricating a temporalised environment in between the momentary and the monumental, between interior and exterior. In presenting and discussing these speculative spaces, this thesis moves between architecture and academia, Oceania and the West, the ephemeral and the enduring, and the inside and the outside, with the aim of destabilising architecture’s discursive ground, causing its hermetic boundaries to become temporalised and fluid.

Abstract:
The topic of my diploma thesis is the architectonical study of the new synagogue of Frýdek-Místek. The plot contained the original synagogue in the past, which was, like many other synagogues in Czechia, burned down by the Nazis. The only memento to the original synagogue left was the Jewish school. Its frontage was however stripped of all architecturally valuable elements and therefore lost all its historical value. For this reason, in the scope of this thesis, I have decided to tear down the old building and create a completely new complex, which will comply with the requirements of the Jewish quahal, with regards to architecture and utilization of the object. I’ve designed a monument, consisting of simple stone blocks in place of the old, torn down synagogue. The stone blocks mark the location of the outer walls of the original synagogue.

Abstract:
<p>This dissertation presents a new architecture model named Weld for horizontal architectures such as VLIW and EPIC. Weld integrates speculative multithreading support into a VLIW/EPIC processor to hide run-time latency effects that cannot be determined by the compiler. Also, it proposes a hardware technique called operation welding that merges operations from different threads to utilize the hardware resources more efficiently. Hardware contexts such as program counters and the fetch units are duplicated to support multithreading. Also, a dual-thread Weld architecture is isolated and analyzed for cost/performance purposes within the general Weld architecture. The dual-thread Weld model supports one main thread and one speculative thread running simultaneously in a VLIW/EPIC processor with a register file and a fetch unit per thread. The cost/performance impact of the dual-thread Weld model, which includes analysis of migrating the disambiguation hardware to the compiler and the sensitivity analysis to the variation of branch misprediction and second-level cache miss penalties, is examined further. <P>

Abstract:
There is an element of play within all of us. It is imagination and interaction that makes us human. In this digital age, it is evident that we are losing touch with our own ability to remain imaginative and explore new and different ways to physically interact with our environment. In this thesis, it is my goal is to design in a way that does not limit human abilities, but instead promotes the idea of play between our wants and needs as well as re-sparking our imagination. In this thesis exploration, I experimented with multiple scales of playful design. I will show you how I implemented the idea of play for the design of a kite, a toy, a furniture piece, and a building. All of these projects are examples of designs that could have been static elements, but instead were designed to be dynamic to complement our everyday dynamic lives. Enjoy!<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
Software as a service is an emerging but important aspect of the web. WebServices play a vital role in providing it. Web Services are commonly provided in one of two architectural styles: a "REpresentational State Transfer" (REST), or using the "Simple Object Access Protocol" (SOAP.) Originally most web content was text and small images. But more recent services involve complex data structures including text, images, audio, and video. The task of optimizing data to provide delivery of these structures is a complex one, involving both theoretical and practical aspects. In this thesis work, I have considered two architectures developed in the REST architectural style and tested them on mixes of data types (plain text, image, audio) being retrieved from a file system or database. The payload which carries the actual content of a data transmission process can either be in Extensible Markup Language (XML) or JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). Both of these language notations are widely used. The two architectures used in this thesis work are titled as Scenario 1 and Scenario 2. Scenario 1 proposes two different cases for storing, retrieving and presenting the data via a REST web service. We investigate the question of what is the best way to provide different data types (image, audio) via REST Web Service. Payload size for JSON and XML are compared. Scenario 2 proposes an enhanced and optimized architecture which is derived from the pros of the first two cases in Scenario 1. The proposed architecture is best suited for retrieving and serving non-homogeneous data as a service in a homogenous environment. This thesis is composed of theoretical and practical parts. The theory part contains the design and principles of REST architecture. The practical part has a Web Service provider and consumer model developed in Java. The practical part is developed using the Spring MVC framework and Apache CXF, which provides an implementation using JAX-RS, the Java API for RESTful services. A glossary of acronyms used in this thesis appears in the appendix on page 101.

Explores from a feminist standpoint the gendered nature of discourse in contemporary Western architecture from an Australian perspective. The starting point for the thesis was an examination of Australian architectual discourse in search of some explanation for the continuing low numbers of women practitioners in Australia. Hypothesizes that contemporary Western architecture is imbued with a pervasive and dominant masculinity and that this is deeply imbedded in its discursive constructions: the body housed by architecture is assume to be male, the mind which produces architecture is assumed to be masculine. Given the cultural location of Australian architecture as a marginal participant in the wider arena of contemporary Western / international discourses, focuses on writing about two iconic figues in Western architecture; Le Corbusier, of international reknown; and, Glenn Murcutt, of predominantly local significance.

Wallace, Peggy. "Earth Sheltered Housing in Warren County, Kentucky: Description of Housing Units & Determinants of Residents' Satisfaction." TopSCHOLAR®, 1988. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2944.

Full text
Abstract:
The known population of earth sheltered houses in Warren County, Kentucky were studied (a) to document building materials and techniques utilized, (b) to describe the residents demographically and document their attitudes regarding satisfaction with earth sheltered housing, and (c) to determine reasons for building and resources utilized in financing and planning, as well as problems encountered in regard to the earth sheltered house. Data on 21 housing units were collected through personal interviews. Data analysis was accomplished using contingency tables, chi-squares, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression. The earth sheltered house found to provide residents with high satisfaction was generally a chambered elevational structure which had cast-in-place concrete walls at the earth contact points with an exposed wood frame roof and a concrete floor. Amounts of soil coverage on the exterior varied, as did the use of insulation below grade. Waterproofing systems usually included drainage tile, swale(s), plastic sheeting, and a built-up asphalt or pitch coating applied to the exterior walls. A wood stove and central heating system were the most frequently used sources of heat. Air conditioning was utilized by most residents in the summer, although a window air conditioning unit often provided adequate cooling of the entire house. Ventilation was not a concern and dehumidification was seldom a concern for the residents. All 19 original owners (90% of the house owners in the study) acted as their own contractors, hiring professionals for such tasks as soil testing and subcontracting, and most reported no difficulty with financing and planning the earth sheltered house. Information on building the earth sheltered house was most often obtained from family and friends. The most common reasons for choosing this housing alternative were energy conservation and low cost. Resident satisfaction was high for most aspects of the earth sheltered house included in the study. All residents reported high overall satisfaction with the earth sheltered house and most of the housing systems investigated. Significant (p < .01) contributors to residents' computed total satisfaction score (TSS) were satisfaction with lack of mildew and satisfaction with natural lighting in the house (90% of variance explained). The addition of satisfaction with lack of condensation on windows, satisfaction with exterior appearance, and satisfaction with performance of the waterproofing system to the regression equation brought the explained variance to 98%. Significant (p < .01) to residents' self-reported overall satisfaction with their earth sheltered houses were satisfaction with heating and cooling expenses and satisfaction with interior surface temperature (59% variance explained). None of the other variables, housing related or demographic, added significantly to explained variance in the TSS or self-reported overall satisfaction with earth sheltered housing.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis was to create an architectural study of the new synagogue in Opava. Similarly to many other towns and cities, the former synagogue was burned during Kristallnacht, the ruins were completely demolished and taken away. Nowadays there are no buildings on the site, except the former Rabbi’s house. Basic idea was in preserving the park character of the site by insertion of a non-arrogant low cuboid volume in the neighbourhood of apartment buildings from the first half of the 20th century. Designed form benefits from the character of the site while humbly avoiding construction on the actual place where the burnt synagogue stood. This creates an elegant, low object, whose two dominant ceiling slabs are filled with glass in between so it preserves a part of the park’s existing transparency and let the interior freely connect with exterior, also thanks to large sliding windows. In the center of the block is situated three sides closed atrium, which surrounds the new synagogue, into whose interior delicate scattered sunlight penetrates through the translucent onyx stone walls.

Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2012.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 78).<br>This thesis aims to bring the handicraft of knitting into the realm of architecture as a low-tech means of fabrication in a world of high-tech design. This thesis attempts to break knitting down into its most essential components and use these to build a catalog of basic forms which can be generated through knitting. These basic forms will act as building blocks which can be combined to generate more complex geometries. It will be seen that virtually any form can be generated using knitting as a means of production. Furthermore, this thesis will explore the idea of composites in knitting. It contains a catalog of traditional knitting augmented by structural additives, and it speculates as to the repercussions of adding performative elements into the working fiber. Finally, this thesis addresses the approachability of knitting by exploring crowd-sourcing. It postulates that using knitting as a means of fabrication will allow people to actively intervene in their communities, giving them a way to construct solutions to problems in their own neighborhoods.<br>by Kimberly I. Abstract:
The architectural study deals with the design of a new synagogue in Trutnov, on the site of the former burnt down synagogue from 1885. The synagogue from 1938 was set on fire by the Nazis during the so-called Crystal night from 9 to 10 November in 1938. Besides the synagogue, the proposal deals with the entire Jewish complex, namely a kosher restaurant with facilities, an administrative part for the Jewish community, a mikveh connected to a sauna. The task was to solve the location of buildings complicated area of ground, which is not easily accessible, and also to play with the idea of preserving the original location of the synagogue. The result is the design of a new community center. Its purpose is to return the existence of the Jewish population back to Trutnov, where the Jewish population has not existed for a long time. The design consists of two objects. One of them is a separate synagogue where prayers, celebrations and other events take place. An important part is also the kosher restaurant, which provides the specifics of catering, as well as a mikveh used for a cleansing ritual with a sauna relaxation area. The next function is the seat of the Jewish community.

Full text
Abstract:
The establishment of the National Architecture Exhibition and Awards (NAEA) program in 1987, by Chamber of Architects, coincides with the period of dissolving modernist paradigm and rising pluralist influences in Turkey. The program, as a critical medium, is expected to reflect &ldquo<br>national&rdquo<br>architectural practice and contribute in the &ldquo<br>contemporary&rdquo<br>architectural practice in Turkey. In order to evaluate the consistencies with these objectives, firstly the program identity and then the participations are analyzed. On the other hand, regarding the searches for &ldquo<br>innovativeness&rdquo<br>and &ldquo<br>contemporaneity,&rdquo<br>parallelism with the international architectural agenda and concerns for geographic differences are analyzed through the awarded projects and the jury reports. In the analysis about the position of the program as well as its indications about Turkish architectural practice, the following results are obtained: Program can be defined as having an insulated and closed character with regard to its structure. Considering the participations, it is seen that it does not reflect the heterogeneous character of its geographical scope and has an elitist profile in awards distribution. Priority given to senior architects in Grand Prizes, the weight of the restoration category and the newly established commemoration program itself point out to a conservative stance. In the thesis, the awarded submissions are analyzed comparatively with Progressive Architecture (PA) Awards program. It is an established program in United States, which perpetuate since 1954 and it is claimed to have both &ldquo<br>reflective&rdquo<br>and &ldquo<br>limit-pushing&rdquo<br>positions in the architectural platform. In NAEA program, instead of the claims for giving precedence to &ldquo<br>limit-pushing&rdquo<br>attempts, a &ldquo<br>reflective&rdquo<br>position has been maintained. In the jury reports, the &ldquo<br>modernist&rdquo<br>award criteria can be defined as parallel with the agenda of international platform. In recent years, in international platform, instead of domination by styles, conceptual productions and sustainable themes gain prominence. Thus, regarding the submissions of NAEA, these parallelisms have been diminished.

Abstract:
Recent developments in AI is changing our world. It already governs our digital life. In my thesis I take the position that AI involvement in the field of architecture is inevitable, and indeed already here. AI is neither something we can simply accept, nor wholly ignore. Rather, we should try to understand and work with it. These algorithms should not be seen as mere tools with predictable, repeatable outcomes, they are something more complex. I’ve explored the world of AI by means of teaching a machine to design diverse, typologically similar objects: residential doorways from Stockholm. By instructing the machine to read and recreate these objects it has learned to design objects similar to them. While the machine does not know what it has designed, it has nevertheless reinterpreted the residential gate, thus offering an opportunity to glimpse into to the “mind” of AI, a world equally as unknown as omnipresent.

Abstract:
A wall is a primordial architectural artifact. The power and potential of a wall lies in its ability to transcend the necessities of construction and become a generator of architecture. A wall can be more than a plane in space, it can sculpt light and provide housing for various activities within its tectonic dimension. These additional functions can create an experience of both solidity of a wall as well as the possibility of inhabiting a wall. The creation of a "place". A wall also possesses the ability to create a sense of place. This can occur not only through the provision of habitable space, but also through the provision of bearing points for other structural members, illuminable surfaces, or zones of both visual and physical penetration. Within this thesis project, the wall generates a stair, and together, they begin to produce the rest of the architecture. At first there is a wall. Abstract:
This study proposes a systematic approach for investigators to judge how architecture of a given cultural group can be considered as culturally identifiable. More specifically, it proposes the steps in unveiling the relationships between chosen core elements of cultural distinctness and various design patterns. The suggested sources of core elements are political, social/behavioral, and economic influences on architectural design and approaches to create architectural signs. It is presupposed that a design pattern is considered culturally identifiable when important core elements are communicated via noticeable signs. The communication is perceived from a semiotic analogy of architectural signs, whereby the importance of one core element over the other is identified by the investigator through research into the cultural context under study. A case study on China's architecture is presented to illustrate these steps and test the proposed hypotheses. The steps are so designed that testing the relevance of core elements to architectural signs is essential. Forty-six sample buildings selected from China served as stimulus materials in the case study. These building patterns were rated as different types of signs on the basis of the core elements elicited from China's present-day culture. These buildings also were judged in a survey by forty-four Chinese students and their spouses at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University who represent samples of overseas Chinese laypersons. The findings show that survey results deviated significantly from the semiotic results as laypersons considered traditional architecture most representative of Chinese identity. The semiotic results show that culturally identifiable designs are the hybrid forms of traditional and modern architecture. Most laypersons ignored the relationships between their perception of distinct identity in architecture and core elements of economic meanings and sign-creation approaches. This deviation implies a significant cultural lag in perceiving distinct identity between professionals and laypersons, and led to modification of the presupposed hierarchical importance of core elements. Through the case study and findings, this research illustrates the procedure by which investigators can determine from a specific range of cultural elements the most effective means of communication of identity. It enables the inclusion of core elements of popular culture in comparing various design patterns and in differentiating built forms of one culture from that of others. The study ends with the factors and suggestions that are related to communication of Chinese identity in architecture.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
Many plant species, including Barrel Cacti, have developed long-term evolutionary adaptable traits to survive in extreme climates. The most important trait of cacti in extreme hot dry climates is to reduce water evaporation and increase water storage. The exterior skin of a cactus plays an important role in preventing water evaporation through heat transmission. On the other hand, there have been many passive design strategies applied to the space planning and building design of architecture in hot dry climates. The goal of these passive design strategies is to regulate the penetration of heat into building spaces while creating a strong ventilation system to help bring cool air inside the building. In this paper, adaptations of the Barrel Cactus' exterior skin, along with architectural passive design strategies for hot dry climates (in this caseYazd, Iran) will be discussed and integrated with one another through the concept of Biomimicry. The goal is to design an exterior building skin that is attuned to the environmental conditions of a hot dry climate, based on the successful applicable behaviors demonstrated in the Barrel Cactus. Key architectural features such as natural ventilation and daylight will be informed by the evolutionary cacti adaptations and passive architectural strategies in the design of the building skin in order to increase the possibility of consistent comfort for users of an office building.
