Abstract:
Studying the architectural science bibliography has shown that during 150 years of its history few indices have been created, and recent decades almost all architectural bibliography has not gone beyond the framework of the nation-wide index «Chronicles of Book Chamber». This article examines the fundamental nature of bibliographic science for purposes of architectural research. The article objective is determining ways of architectural bibliography development and generating a unified database of architectural knowledge in the context of contemporary socio-economic and socio-cultural realities. It considers defended dissertations on specialty «Architecture»; describes information resources containing in their thesis structure on the subject area. Attention is focused on the distribution of defended dissertations by years, cities and thematic nests. The paper has revealed thesis devoted to the theory and history of foreign architecture. It emphasizes the need of further large-scale research with an analysis of the entire spectrum of human knowledge, which includes dissertations related to architectural science. The authors conclude: 1. There is no complete systematically presented unified catalog of dissertations on architecture, including resources of the Russian Book Chamber. 2. It is necessary to create such resource, which would satisfy the information needs of different groups of users.

Abstract:
In 2012 the Chinese architect Wang Shu won the distinguished Pritzker Architecture Prize. Since then, his buildings and his architectural thinking have received increasing international attention. Among his many written works, Wang’s PhD thesis ‘Fictionalising Cities’ – completed in 2000 under the supervision of Professor Jiwei Lu at Tongji University in Shanghai – is widely considered the definitive statement of his architectural thought and methodology. It comprises a structuralist study of the city and its architecture, doing so through the development of two key themes. The first is Wang’s theoretical discussion of the application of structuralist-semiotic approaches to architecture, urban research, and other areas in the humanities, and the second is his reading of the Chinese city and China’s landscape architecture tradition in the light of this theoretical discussion. Wang believes that traditional Chinese cities have their own structure, components and rules of combination, and refers to them as instances of ‘texture city’ (), a term that proposes an analogy between Roland Barthes’s notion of text and the city, both of which are understood as a ‘fabric of signifiers’.

Abstract:
With the continual development of architectural technology, larger and more complex buildings are crying out for innovative designing methods because the traditional designing methods, which are mostly based on the designers’ experience and intuition, can not keep pace with the sustainable development of modern architecture. Therefore, the designer has to adapt himself to the new architectural enviroment by improving his designing methods continuously. So based on his former experience as an architectural designer, the author of this thesis attempts to explore some innovative architectural designing methods in modern times, the basic elements and principles of architectural design, as well as the process of architectural design, hoping to offer some inspirations to future studies of architectural designing methods.

Abstract:
In the debate "Architecture and Philosophy / the relations, potentialities and critical points" the notions of "philosophy of architecture" and "aesthetics of architecture" will be discussed. The differences between traditional and contemporary philosophy and aesthetics of architecture will be introduced. In a separate sub-chapter the status of "theory" and "theorizing" during the times of late modernism and postmodern culture will be discussed. It has been pointed to the modalities of theory outside philosophy and aesthetics. The discourses from philosophy, humanities, free theorizing and architectural theories are brought closer together. In the final sub-chapter the status of contemporary philosophy and cotemporary architecture have been discussed. The notion of contemporaneity has been particularly elaborated. The central thesis of this paper is the relation of architecture and philosophy, i.e. the theory constituent for modern, postmodern and contemporary architecture. The derived thesis of the discussion is that critical theory of architecture and architectural yearning for "critical architecture" have acquired exceptional significance at the time of global conflicts and, presently at the time of global economic crisis. The theoretical, aesthetic and philosophical attention has essentially been shifted from the immanent questions about architecture (form, function, spectacularity) to the external i.e. transcendental questions about the culture and society, i.e. about the economy, power, governance, supervision, forms of life, flexibility of architectural production, exchange and consumption.

Abstract:
The paper explores the introduction and articulation of ideas and aesthetic practice of postmodernism in architecture of late socialism in Yugoslavia, with the focus on Belgrade architecture scene. Theoretical and methodological point of departure of this analysis is J?rgen Habermas's thesis of modernity as an incomplete, i.e., unfinished project, from his influential essay ?Die Moderne: Ein unvollendetes Projekt? (1980). The thematic framework of the paper is shifted towards issues raised by Habermas which concern relations of cultural modernity and societal modernization, or rather towards consideration of architectural postmodernity in relation to the split between culture and society. The paper investigates architectural discourse which was profiled in Belgrade in 1980s, in a historical context of cultural modernity simultaneous with Habermas's text, but in different conditions of societal modernization of Yugoslav late socialism. In that, the principle methodological question concerns the interpretation of postmodern architecture as part of the new cultural production within the social restructuration of late and/or end of socialism as a system, that being analogous to Fredric Jameson's thesis of ?Postmodernism, Or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism? (1984).

Abstract:
The architectural presentation is composed of one rendering, or a series of rendering, a perfect moment, representing the idealization of the not yet realized project. What would happen if we could find out how the project was designed, how each layer was added until the final form was reached and the people represented could help telling the architectural story? The flexible hybrid graphic medium of comic strips, which combines in their structure, the narrative element, space and movement, has always had a strong connection with the notion of architecture (symbolic protagonist or even center of the comics' story). The doctoral thesis, Comicopolis. An alternative manner of presenting, discussing and designing architecture, analyzes through theoretical study, interviews and experiments, the way the characteristic elements of comics can improve the traditional architectural representation, the way we interact with architecture and the design process of space.

Abstract:
Meticulous record of more than 300 medieval structures, extensive fieldwork on numerous archeological sites, more than 100 texts and several critical books on medieval architecture mark professor Aleksandar Deroko's work on preserving medieval architectural heritage in Serbia and the former Yugoslavia. They are all aptly illustrated with his drawings and photographs. Deroko's genuine interest in medieval architecture and its preservation shaped his student days between the two world wars, a period also characterised by a clash between traditionalism and modernism in architecture. Destruction from war, public negligence of medieval heritage, the so-called "golden rush" when many hoped to uncover lost medieval treasures, and the overall lack of clear methodologies for the preservation of architectural heritage displeased young Deroko, who often publicly expressed his opinion on the urgent need for medieval structures to be saved and restored, and in particular religious architecture. Even his undergraduate thesis for his architectural degree, which focused on the Church of St. Sava in Belgrade, was inspired by medieval religious architecture and its values. This paper addresses the relevance of Deroko's work today, especially in the light of his understanding of medieval architecture as art and a dynamic cultural symbol relevant for architectural practices.

Full text
Abstract:
The act of designing architecture is based on the use of various models chosen as referents. Such models may come from architecture itself or from the arts like sculpture, painting, music, literature, and so forth. They usually provide the components for architectural design. This stance leads to the notion of architectural design as the construction of a new order derived from elements, examples, or prototypes verified in time by virtue of experience. Thus, the praxis of the design process is mainly referred to as a conscious imitation of models. The thesis of this work is that landscape constitutes one of these models. Landscape should be considered a contemporary model for architectural imitation because it is a concept that reveals a dynamic reality oriented towards the future. The values of landscape produce a wish to emulate it, to assimilate it. In a renewed object–subject relationship, landscape proposes itself as a paramount issue for architectural design. This paper contextualizes and explains what comprises such renewed mimesis and why landscape is a subject that provokes a desire for active emulation in contemporary architecture.

Abstract:
Green architecture, a termed entitled to the architectures which dedicate great importance to the environment, is one of the characteristics of the sustainable design in which environmental sustainability is more important [1]. In the modern notion of architecture and programming, rain water is usually treated as “castoff”, or as eternal energy splurged by us. Some irrational design produces a lot of unsinkable ditches and culverts crossed underground, which leads to drainage and wastage of the water in the earth. Extensive artificial lawn accelerates the water evaporation of the earth. Large amount of unsinkable reinforced tough paving layer in cities disturbs the ecological balance of the earth, etc.. All these above give more grave non-ecological factors to the concrete jungle. When talking about the recycle and reuse of water in city, we should thinking about promoting the life system balance in ecosphere, which is the theme of this thesis. This thesis tries to give a systematic and in-depth discussion on architectural water recycle design by collecting materials, to give an ecological recycle design of preserving, saving and purifying water on the aspect of architecture and environment. Through the analysis on infiltration, storage and reuse of rain water in cities of different countries and regions, this thesis tries to expatiate the contribution of rain water collection and evaporation to the urban ecology, and proposes ecological way of water use considering regional climate to achieve the aim of eternal water use in urban ecological system.

Abstract:
In 1953, architect, planner, and historian Erwin Anton Gutkind published a series of articles collectively titled “How Other Peoples Dwell and Build” in Architectural Design. At a glance, the series seems an anomaly in Gutkind's extensive oeuvre, and it remains little known in the field of vernacular architecture. In “How Other Peoples Dwell and Build”: Erwin Anton Gutkind and the Architecture of the Other, Marcel Vellinga aims to place the series within the broader context of Gutkind's writings. Running through Gutkind's work—and underlined in Vellinga's article—is the thesis that the historical development of human settlements mirrors the degenerating relationships between individuals and their communities, and between human beings and the natural environment. Thus, the Architectural Design series is an integral part of Gutkind's writings on the history of urban development. The series is one of the first architectural publications to focus on vernacular traditions from an international perspective and to emphasize the importance of studying vernacular architecture in its larger cultural and environmental contexts.

Among other things, the following thesis is proposed: the Romanticism is not the first stage of the Eclecticism but a natural continuation of the Classicism. Moreover, in the ecclesiastical architecture, unlike in the secular one, the ideas of Romanticism were relevant in quite different historical periods.

Abstract:
Although not widely acknowledged, the Republic of North Macedonia boasts a number of prolific architects who were often engaged in architectural education. Jovan Stefanovski, the author of the Millennium Cross and the National Theatre, both in the capital Skopje, is one such personality. Similar to former generations of architects, his design style conceptually recalls the traditional architecture of his homeland. Researching the Jovan Stefanovski Archive, a number of projects were identified – a sample from the case-studies covered in his doctorate thesis – and discussed with respect to the themes of ‘idea’ and ‘realisation’ in architecture. His notion of the former is akin to ‘concept’ as used in architectural design. While an idea is an expression of the unconscious, realisation is the conscious decision to execute the design idea. Stefanovski was a prolific architect and educator. His interest in traditional architecture was in line with the trends which developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Furthermore, in line with the architectural approaches being developed by Stefanovski’s teachers, the regionalist idiom which emerged in Macedonia, is contemporaneously evident in his work both in form and function.

Abstract:
India is well diverse with a variety of cultural and traditional practices. Impact of age-old practices redefined the idea of culture and tradition, not only as a hereditary system, but also as part of art and architecture. Factors such as the cultural changes between North and South India, impact of the British, changes in spatial organization and patriarchy and matrilineal system drew an impact on cultural impression of India through time.
Palaces (04th —18th century) and the lifestyle of the heirs, being a soul example to exhibit the Indian uniqueness, gradually inclined towards British culture and morals. This influence brought a change in the architectural design of palaces, which is the core study area in the thesis.
Comparing the architectural planning of palaces from the 13th to the 18th century showed a clear change on how British influenced Indian palace design. This became one of the finest reasons to identify cities with palaces based on their culture and tradition, and on art and architecture. In addition to finding how it has brought the influential change and what is the present scenario of the same palaces.
The architectures that were adopted in India was a form of true traditional architecture which is been followed through a very long time and hence it was collaborated with Italian, French, Indo Sarcenic or European style.

Paolo Tombesi sets out a very interesting thesis that Asia will become the ‘back office’ of Western design practice in, ‘A true south for design? The new international division of labour in architecture’ (arq 5/2, pp.171–180). There are many instances of this happening already, though mainly in engineering and in US style architectural practice where documentation consists of the application of rules-based methods and the work used to be done by ‘tracers’. Practices with computer-based standard detailing can have schematic drawings worked up overnight and corrections similarly serviced. UK architectural practice is largely done without back offices or standard solutions and drafting help must be closely supervised. Price competition from the South may well become a factor for change.

This article reports methods and results of Master students' Diploma Thesis and Design research on representing identity through architecture. A group of 12 students have had the task to examine potentials and limitations of positioning and conceptualizing foreign Embassy in the context of Belgrade. Students were expected to rethink architectural representation and to find new possibilities for networking global aspects of identity and local aspects of context, thus creating architecture that emphasizes and promotes culture through its spatial and programmatic framework. Article concludes that architecture can become a resource for understanding cultural identity. It does not stop only at the physical, but affects the process of urban living, negotiating between global and local dimension of urban living, making a new culturally responsive urban landscape.

Abstract:
Views on architecture that hold a significant position in architectural theory are the ones by Marc-Antoine Laugier, a French theoretician from the 18th century. The research on his architectural theory that have been carried out so far are quite stereotypical and concern Laugier?s concept of primitive hut as his only significant contribution to architectural theory. It is well-known that the concept of primitive hut plays an important role in Laugier?s theory and it is what actually maintained his reputation up to now. However, by singling out this concept as an independent one, one actually neglects all the other aspects of Laugier?s theory. The aim of this paper is to present multidimensionality of Laugier?s architectural aesthetics by crossing the borders of architecture and viewing Laugier?s ideas in cultural, philosophical, religious and historical context, as well as applying the integrative process and considering the spiritual paths of the enlightenment movement in the mid-18th century. A special attention is paid to considering the aesthetic aspect which represents the gist and an inevitable part of Laugier?s architectural theory. His aesthetic theory is important in forming the classicist style, and despite its radical character, it influenced many architects in France and the rest of Europe. We may see Laugier as one of the first modernists considering his structuralist logic of the constructive circuit of architecture and aesthetic modesty of decoration. Laugier?s functionalist attitude that the constructive circuit should at the same time represent a decorative element of architecture confirms the thesis that modernist approach has its roots in the 18th century.

Abstract The overall human progress continuously stimulates the transformation of the notion of architecture and enhances the development of new architectural forms. In line with the thesis that only sustainable architecture allows the fulfilment of contemporary requirements to full extent, this paper explores the variety of developed mobile educational spaces, classifies them into types and analyses their sustainability aspects. The analysis aims to define the cases and needs to which mobile educational spaces respond best, i.e. according to which their utilization is justifiable. The results open a new research debate on the relationship between sustainability and the duration of utilization.

Twenty-five years after its publication in 1977, David Watkin's ‘time-bomb’ demolition of Modernist architectural theory has appeared under the cliché-augmented title Morality and Architecture Revisited. Whether the book merits this jubilee re-issue is open to some debate. Of the reasons given on the flyleaf, the suggestion that ‘many of the old fallacies still persist’ seems at once an unnecessary admission of the author's failure or, at any rate, partial success in convincing us of his thesis, and an equally unnecessary concern for the recidivist views of a handful of unreconstructed Functionalists. Can there really be many who are not, after a quarter of a fast-moving century, persuaded that Pevsner was wrong and Popper right? When it comes to architectural theory, historicism in the strict philosophical sense is surely largely discredited.

Abstract:
Architects should learn to communicate more through their architecture. The commercial vernacular architecture of the American ‘strip’ – motels, gas stations, fast food outlets – communicates loud and clear. In comparison, high architecture, particularly the high architecture of Modernism, is sullen and silent. This, roughly, is the thesis of Learning from Las Vegas by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Stephen Izenour (1972 and 1977), one of the key texts of the Post-Modernist movement in architectural theory of the early 1970s. Venturi et al thought architects could learn a lot about symbolism and communication from the sort of non-judgmental study of roadside architecture that their students had undertaken at Yale. In the second half of the book the idea was developed into a theory and encapsulated into a universal building concept, ‘the decorated shed’, which has since become a cliché of architectural criticism. The decorated shed was designed to overthrow the most cherished beliefs and rituals of Modernism. Expression through form was to be replaced by the ‘persuasive heraldry’ of the totem and the billboard; articulation of detail was to be replaced by old-fashioned applied ornament; and the ‘heroic and original’ was to be replaced by the ‘ugly and ordinary’. But the emphasis was on the decoration rather than the shed. Learning from Las Vegas did not have much to say about the way that the sheds of the commercial strip were constructed, other than describing them vaguely as ‘system built’, or about the implications that the technology of their construction might have for architectural practice.

Abstract:
This edition of ARTEKS: Jurnal Teknik Arsitektur presents a series of the investigation into the locality as an attempt to contribute to the development of architectural knowledge that addresses particular contexts. In architecture, as in many other disciplines, knowledge is developed and transformed through inquiry and investigation, as a means to take a position in relation to the existing knowledge. Knowledge is established through the process of dialectic that contains three parts: the thesis as the originating idea, position, or statement; the antithesis as the opposite or counter-argument to the thesis; and the synthesis as the reconciliation or transformation of those two (Fichte, 1868). Through the continuing process of dialectic, knowledge is not static and limited to what has been known before but is continuously transformed through questioning, arguing, and re-positioning. Research as a form of inquiry and investigation plays an important role in establishing the debate within the discipline (Smith, 2012) to push the boundaries of knowledge. Architecture as a form of knowledge should be developed through research (Till, 2011), which could be performed through a range of research methods (Groat & Wang, 2013; Lucas, 2016)

Abstract:
About 20 years ago, the lack of knowledge of the Brazilian architects about the use of rocks as natural materials was being commented which may have contributed to the problems of the stone coatings of buildings in several cities, compromising their original features and the beauty of many works. Professionals did not seek technological data on rocks and students were not instructed on such subjects in classrooms. The choice of these materials was supposedly empirical. Between 2010 and 2012 it was possible to obtain access to information about the contents of materials teaching in the architecture courses of Brazil, and also to inquire whether or not there was knowledge by architects active in the market on the subject, interviewing 64 professionals in 13 states from the country. The architects would be authors of architectural projects of large buildings and responsible for the materials specifications. Conclusion: there is no teaching directed to the use of rocks in Architecture in the country courses and architects never learned formally about such subject, fact that justified in a doctorate thesis proposal, the creation of the first discipline on the subject in the Course of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Pernambuco, UFPE, Brazil.

This article addresses the Soviet pavilion at the World Exhibition in New York City, 1939, especially the architectural and artistic image of the Soviet pavilion, including its search and implementation. Archiveal documents from the Soviet section of the International exhibition in New York, as well as professional periodicals of the 1930s, analyzed to interpret and evaluate the New York exhibition and the Soviet pavilion in the Soviet public field, make up the main data base for the article. First, the competitive practices of the 1930s and their hidden mechanisms, ruled by party-state power, are shown through the case of the New York Pavilion. Further, the stylistic peculiarities of the pavilion are considered, and ideas among the power circles about worthy forms of the “export” representation of the USSR by architectural and artistic means are shown. With the example of an “Americanized” style of the Soviet pavilion, the practice of appropriating alien architectural forms was demonstrated as a way to emphasize the involvement of Stalinist culture in current global trends. Attention is also drawn to the contradiction between official “internal” discourse, with its main thesis of turning to “classical heritage”, and the choice of a modern language for “export” architecture.

The history of architecture and contemporary architectural discussion show that the encounters of architecture and philosophy are neither rare nor exceptional. The central thesis of this article is that today architecture and philosophy are connected in a way that goes beyond the variety of their interdisciplinary co-operation. The two domains of thought are connected in a more "existential" sense: they both need to address certain issues that concern the conditions of the possibility of their future existence. The article focuses on two such issues: it seeks to demonstrate in what way the existence of architecture and philosophy depends, on one hand, on the ancient alternative between the logic of the One and the logic of the Multiple; and on the other hand, on the concept of the indiscernability of thought and act. In so doing it draws on the Lacanian triad of the symbolic, the imaginary and the real.

This paper analyses the predominant trend between the students to follow, frame, and develop a concept in the architectural thesis design. The research targets to question how the students derive their inspiration from diverse sources and influencers into the architectural design concept. The research methodology was based on semi-structured questionnaires with Likert scale questions to analyse and interpret data through the Chi-Square test in SPSS software. The findings revealed that first, the students preferred to employ more symbolic and poetic elements for the design than real projects, second, to create their concepts under influences of supervisors and juries than research, third, to follow personal procedure than the structured process of the course. In conclusion, the results revealed that the students adopted a personal procedure under the influences of the supervisors to design a concept that is closely aligned with a subjective approach, rather than a structured research process.

Recently in this journal H. C. Kee has exposed and refuted perceived anachronistic notions concerning the existence of the pre-70 CE synagogue.1According to Kee's thesis, the pre-70 CE synagogue was not a distinctive architectural edifice, but a voluntary gathering place for worship. Kee writes:The earliest distinct buildings date from the third century, and vary widely in style and interior arrangements. There is simply no evidence to speak of synagogues in Palestine as architecturally distinguishable edifices prior to 200 CE. Evidence of meeting places: ‘Yes’, both in private homes and in public buildings. Evidence of distinctive architectural features of a place of worship or for study of Torah: ‘No’.2As a result, Kee attempts to redate the Theodotus inscription, our major epigraphical source for the pre-70 CE Palestinian synagogue, to the ‘mid–second to late third century CE’.3This late dating is necessary in Kee's theory, since this inscription documents a succession of synagogue rulers, extending back to Theodotus’ grandfather, which would place the Palestinian synagogue and its institutions well into the first century BCE.

From the perspective of Information design science, this thesis discusses the fact that in the transition of the entire society toward informatization, building skins have unprecedentedly picked up more complex functions and borne more social responsibilities, as shown in the following aspects: As the interaction between outdoor advertising media and humans and environment, as the media that link up indoor and outdoor information and as the media for indoor householders to express their needs, the infiltration of being digital into the architectural field has made building skins the interface for human-computer interaction in a broad sense. Accordingly, in addition to professional skills, architectural designers must keep on learning the knowledge and methods of digital interactive design and develop the awareness of studying inhabitants' behaviors. Architectural design has become an integration process of massive information in a way that is different from traditional design ideas. Therefore, designers need to look for more appropriate building skin design methods in this new period of architectural design.

Abstract Historical investigation anchors architectural and urban practice. Analyzing two sets of questionnaires distributed in different class settings, this paper explores two questions: how do design students currently learn about architectural history, and how do they translate this knowledge into their design practice? First, tentative conclusions are that (1) physical engagement with buildings outside the classroom is an important inspiration for the students, (2) (assigned) books definitely influence their (design) thinking, (3) different types of pedagogy–lecture, seminar, thesis, studio–affect student learning in different and complementary ways, and (4) students overwhelmingly see history as a relevant preparation and foundation for design, but this understanding is implicit and often unspecific.
