Abstract:
The paper examines Christian architecture from the perspective of “meta-codal function”, i.e. through examination of architectural symbolism expressed solely by architectural means. Emphasizing symbolic and semantic content of architecture, the paper offers a broader research field of architectural artistry by using a wider iconographic comparison. As a representative of baroque architecture and the most prominent example of architectural symbolism, St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Vilnius (1668–1702) has been selected for the research. The iconographic programme of this church is compared to most distinct iconographic themes identified through the analysis of some examples of historic Christian architecture. By this method, the research detaches from the usual stylistic analysis and poses the most basic question in architectural artistry: is architecture capable of expressing the independent artistic content which can translate more than architecture’s general appearance.

Abstract:
The architectural discourse in Indonesia generally focuses on traditional architecture that represents specific regional icons, the synthesis of traditional architecture with European-style architecture, and modern architecture inspired by International Style. This research focuses on the architectural style in Indonesia which flourished in the 1950s, known as the Jengki architectural style. This architectural style is essential in the history of Indonesian architecture, considering that the style reflects the spirit of nationalism and post-colonial Indonesian. This research aims to explore the icons of Jengki architecture, by elucidating the architectural concepts that underlie the two oldest Jengki buildings in Bandung, West Java. The analysis showed that the characteristics of this architectural style shown by the configuration of architectural elements resembling the form of a pentagon, mostly asymmetrical in spatial layout, playful articulation of ornaments, and the use of local materials. The pentagon becomes an icon of Pancasila, which is a foundational principle of the new Indonesian state and symbolize the meaning of nationalism. Thus, the icon which also represents symbolic meaning becomes an essential aspect in the design of Jengki-style buildings in the future. This icon can be an alternative to be applied to modern buildings that are intended to display national icons, rather than particular regional icons. Besides enriching the architectural knowledge of Indonesian architecture, the results of this study are beneficial to architectural practitioners, stakeholders, and architectural conservationists as well

Abstract:
The article presents the current state of knowledge about the Borobudur temple, a valuable representative of Buddhist architecture, located in Java, Indonesia. The author presents the genesis of the temple, the facts concerning its rediscovery after centuries of oblivion, and Buddhist cosmology embodied in the form of a three-dimensional mandala on which the architectural form of Borobudur is based. The author studies Buddhist symbolism of the architectural form, reliefs and sculptures created on the basis of regional patterns and local Javanese culture of everyday life. This temple is one of the most perfect examples of translation of Buddhist cosmology and symbolism into an architectural form. At the same time, it constitutes an intercultural and timeless masterpiece of architecture and sculpture which requires particular protection, also due to the influence it exerts on the life of local Buddhist religious minorities.

Esta forma de proceder respetaba el pensamiento humanista en el que la casa de Dios debía simbolizar la perfección, armonía, belleza e integridad del Creador.PALABRAS CLAVE:Humanismo; Arquitectura jesuítica; Barroco; Perspectiva Lineal; Noster modus.ABSTRACTThe analysis of the direct relationship of the terms “jesuit style” and “noster modus” (our way of proceeding), with the architectural theories of Humanism as a binder of what it is called Jesuit Architecture, it is also a fundamental part of this work. From this hypothesis, we used the typology of St. Louis of the French in Seville, as an example of ornamental and decorative language of Jesuit architecture. This church is considered one of the most remarkable architectures of the Society of Jesus. It is noteworthy its centered floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross inscribed in a rectangle. This is plan is little known in Sevillian Architecture. The design of the architecture based on Jesuitical construction rules has been a milestone in Western architectural history. This way of proceeding respected humanist thinking, in which the household of God was supposed to symbolize perfection, harmony, beauty and integrity of Creator.KEYWORDS:Humanism; Jesuit Architecture; Baroque; Linear Perspective; Noster modus.

Abstract:
Architectural schools of design overwhelmingly adapt to cultural backgrounds of societies they target. This paper distinguishes between ideologies that generated Western, contemporary architecture, and on the other hand, the values of traditional Arab communities. The paper aims at parrying architectural plastic formations that are irrelevant to the local Arab discourse. The paper rediscovers a value oriented architecture that is capable of moving spiritual feelings towards the built environment, even if its formalistic and visual attractiveness is controversial. The paper demonstrates examples of what can be called “sincere” architecture rather than stunning and sight-startling products that apparently or superficially hold value. Keywords: Human architecture; spiritual architecture; symbolism; social building; experiencing architectureeISSN 2398-4295 © 2018. Abstract:
The paper analyses irrationality as an expression of modern architecture, overviews the concept of irrational architecture. Various art and philosophical trends, that influenced the development of architecture in the 20th century, are analysed. Influences of global and Lithuanian analogues of irrational architecture on the development of architectural styles are presented. Since the concept of irrational architecture hasn’t been widely analysed, the paper suggests several approaches of analysis of irrational forms in architecture. The author arrives at the following conclusions: – Irrationality is an opposite expression of rationality, pragmatism, posityvism, technicist morphology. It’s based on deconstruction, indetermination, roughness, dramatic expression, etc. – The effect of irrationality can be obtained by two ways: using decorations, ornaments, polichromy, and using deformations of forms and constructions. – Irrational trends in architecture are caused by several factors. Philosophical trends such as reliatyvism, irrationalism, intuityvism, psychoanalysis, deconstructyvism, and art trends such as cubism, symbolism, expressionism, art deco, surrealism, etc. – Irrational trends in global and Lithuanian architecture of the 20th century can be noticed in art nouveau, art deco, organic, late modern, postmodern, deconstructyvist architectural styles. Abstract:
The use of symbolism in contemporary architecture is increasingly gaining momentum, especially so in the Eastern countries currently undergoing rapid economic development. Sociologically, this phenomenon can be related to a desire to manifest a vast wealth of national art and respond to the globalisation and unification of world culture. Taking this tendency as a prompt, this study explores different ways of implementing symbolic ornaments in landscape architecture. Traditionally architecture has been defined through and judged against culturally acceptable criteria that set the norm for appropriate form and expression. Yet, technical advances have altered this process and contributed to a certain level of oblivion of traditional architectural form. Thus, the meaning of many Kazakh ornaments has been lost through time. On one hand, this paper collects historical information on the semiotics of Kazakh ornaments and on the other hand, it conducts field studies focusing on the cultural tradition of the native people in Eurasia. The study introduces the use of symbolism in landscape architecture as an aspiration for luck and prosperity which then dictates the quality of the landscape compositions. The findings show that the use of symbolic ornamentation in architecture is not bound to specific geographic areas but rather motivated by broader underlying principles. Through analytical exploration of different cultures and their use of symbols in architecture, this study identifies four main categories of architectural symbolism relating to floral, zoomorphic, geometric and cosmogonic patterns. Each nation then recognises its own identity in the semiotics of those patterns and incorporates them in the urban realm as part of its cultural legacy.

Abstract:
This research topic is the initial stage of new work. The influence of the mythopoetic worldview of Russians and Orthodoxy on the architectural structure and symbolism in the concept of wooden temple building in the northern and arctic territories is considered an integrative scientific field in the article. This is founding a confirmation in the organization of the cultural and sacred landscape, in historical traditions and legends about the choosing of a place for the building of a temple (chapel). As well as the special status of «sacred» and «roadside» groves of trees, the selection of these trees for construction in a sacred meaning and using of individual parts of these temples as a community center and place for ancient rituals. The lexis, connected with the folk architecture, indicates the anthropomorphic nature of the architectural space of the temple. The construction, as it were, is assembled from «large», qualitatively significant components of the human body: head, neck, face, eyes, kokoshnik, forehead, rib, human bust, etc. This tradition is preserved and strengthened by the circumstance that since ancient times, the proportions of the human body acted as a tectonic (building) model of the entire architectural structure. The research substantiates an algorithm for the interactionof the mythopoetic worldview and the Orthodoxy on the architectural structure, and the significance of church architecture. The temple occupied a central place in the sacred space of the northern peasant world. The conducted research made it possible to convincingly prove that wooden churches are a symbolic heritage of the Russian North and the Arctic. The pinnacle of the development of wooden architecture, embodied in the northern temple architecture, was a natural result of ancient Russian architectural – constructional traditions and a reflection of the talent of the Russian people, which allows us to translate the concept of «Russian carpenter» into the category of «Russian architect».

Abstract:
This thesis deal with the tombs of David, Salomon, the kings of Juda, the Asmonean and the Herodian kings. It's starting with the history of the several localisations of the supposed tombs of the judean kings of the first temple period, and then with a new analysis and commentary of biblical indications. In a second part, the judean kings of the second temple period are studied in the context of the tombs of the kings in the classical Antiquity, before focus on the Asmonean's and Herodian's tombs, especially the Maccabean monument, the Herodion and the monument of Herod in Jerusalem. Finally, the study show that the tombs of the kings always had a strong symbolism in literature and architecture, and this symbolism can explain a lot more that it usually believed

This thesis is set in the twofold context of architecturology (P. Boudon, sur l'espace architectural, 1971) and anthropology (G. Durand, les structures anthropologiques de l'imaginaire, 1960). From a methodological point of view, it supposes both intracultural and crosscultural analyses. The second one, in the line of G. P. Murdock 's works, was carried out on a sample of 300 items, divergent as much on geographical as on historical levels. This method applying points out a group of isomorphisms (i. E. Semantic networks) centered on schemes. An extensive definition of the scheme (unsubstantive, dynamic) was considered according to a transdisciplinary point of view. The difficulties about an athogram construction have led to a parasynonymic analysis of action verbs. By this way, the ethogram could be defined by some sixty schemes. Then, four descriptive variable were pointed out : the number of actants, interactantial distance, demension, symmetry. The precise survey of the relations between schematic and inagination fiels allows for a definition of the image as the product of valorization and actualization of a scheme

Abstract:
To give symbolism in architecture seems to be necessary means when human beings construct their cities. Chinese don’t make an exception to the rule, all along centuries we can see a great variety of architectural symbols just existing in present Chinese cities. Which role will they continue to press in the future while for the 21th Century we are in in an important urban context? New constructions have grown up as mushrooms after the rain in all Chinese cities. These new architectural symbols have been determined and are today in construction but what type of influence will they product on the durable environment and on Life in Chinese future generations? This is our subject of investigations. All among a range of activities in construction, Pekin contributes to renforce the influence of Centralisation in China and Shanghai continues to fight in order to keep his status of pioneer of fashion in the country. These are two examples we are opening out. However the architects Paul ANDREU, Etienne TRICAUD, HE Jingtang, CHIU Che Bing, WANG Shu LIU Jiakun and ZHU Pei suggest an answer on their own point of view

Seth, Harpeet. "Iconographic architecture as signs and symbols in Dubai." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/303485.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to investigate the impact of architectural icons on the cities that they are built in, especially those in Dubai to understand the perceptions and associations of ordinary people with these icons, thus analysing their impact on the quality of life in the city. This is an important study with the advent of ‘iconism’ in architecture that has a growing acceptance and demand, wherein the status of a piece of architecture is predetermined as an icon by the media and not necessarily by the people. There is no denying that the fastest means of appearing on the world map is through icons, which Dubai evidently achieved, and there are many supporters of this phenomenon as a means of progress and development, the bonus being instant fame and status. But the symbolism employed in these icons, specifically for this part of the world, many argue may not be relevant to the people or the region, thus leading to a loss of identity and sense of belonging that is a vital component in the overall sense of pride. This study thus evaluates architecture as a service industry that is not only to satisfy the personal egos of the architects or the clients. It has an important role to leave a mark on the end users and not only on the glossy architectural journals. The study presents views on what really leaves a mark on the people’s memory, addressing the scale, the grandness, the location, the size, the technology and the materials that may or may not contribute to the iconic status of an architectural project from the people’s perspective. Further the study investigates if an icon is one that could be a forced landmark or it is one that people associate with, relate to and one that gives them the sense of belonging and pride, binding them together. The expressive iconic forms with the metaphors emerging, may or may not add to the quality of a place, create places of spaces or it may result in more of form accommodating functions. Thus it is imperative to understand that though today Dubai with its multiple icons that are jewels in the crown of Dubai, reflecting awe and splendor, what does this architecture do for the people and thus in leaving an imprint on the peoples mind collectively. The study analyzes the dimensions that make certain kind of architecture stand out. Some of these dimensions are physical and others are difficult to measure, thus it addresses the tangible and intangible factors that result in the icon and the associated symbolism with it. The relevance and meaning of these symbols will have to stand the test of time to leave an ever-lasting impression on generations to come. The literature review was the first part of the study and the theoretical studies were divided into three pivot areas in this thesis: evolution of architecture as signs and symbols, international iconic architecture and its impact, architecture as identity through symbolism. The study also focusses on Dubai as an emerging iconic city concentrating on the needs of people and impact of these icons on people specifically, further highlighting the issues of legibility, context and identity in Dubai. The empirical study examines this argument about iconic architecture through questionnaires and interviews. A comparison is drawn between different segments of people in the community, one set of samples being those who are closely associated with these icons through the process of decision making or building, the others who have very minimal knowledge and association with these icons. The findings thus indicate both the well-established criteria for awarding an iconic status and also the intangible often ignored aspects in iconic image building. Thus, the study suggests a paradigm that could provide more human based elements in the iconic architecture and the selected symbols in representing these icons. Certain recommendations supporting the perception of people towards icons, their needs and local considerations are further made to make cities more liveable and joyful for the people they are intended for.

Abstract:
The near-eastern neolithization is a long period that begins around 12,000 cal. BC and ends around 7,000 cal. BC. It was characterized by significant changes, and marked a decisive stage in the evolution of the way of life of populations. Its main manifestations were the appearance and development of agricultural experiments and domestication, and the advent of villages and durable architecture. Transformations of the way of life were coupled with the reorganization and redefinition of social links at community and regional levels. The relationship of humans to both their natural environment and to their built environment changed enduringly. Though more difficult to discern in material artefacts, neolithization is also synonymous with a change in mentalities. People then developed systems of symbols that manifested these new forms of spirituality. In this context of material and intangible upheavals, both socioeconomic and spiritual, the exceptional buildings excavated on several near-eastern PPNA/PPNB sites have triggered many questions about their interpretation. Their role in terms of spirituality and social organization was crucial in the life of these communities. The understanding of these buildings and the issues they represent is addressed through a review of the archaeological literature available and the entire literature on the subject. This study leads to the exploration of several interpretive pathways based on a multi-disciplinary approach that explores the different facets of the changes that took hold during the PPNA/PPNB

Abstract:
Abstract: Bruno Zevi was an enthusiastic promoter of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and theories. However, the critical enquiry and propaganda of the Italian architect and historian about so-called “organic architecture” reveals a major cultural debt to Le Corbusier. In 1945, Zevi published “Verso un’architettura organica” [Towards an organic architecture], the first version of his history of architecture. The title is clearly a polemical reference to Le Corbusier’s book “Vers une architecture” (1923). In 1977, together with other architects, Zevi promoted the Machu Picchu Charter, a document to “update” the Athens Charter (1933). The places held significance: Athens was the birthplace of western civilization and architectural rationalism. Machu Picchu symbolised the contribution of an alternative way of viewing the world. Are those merely examples of Zevi’s provocations? The relationship between Zevi and Le Corbusier is problematic and ambivalent. Zevi adopts the educational and communicative methods of Le Corbusier and his critical writing style, but his interpretation of the French-Swiss architect also demonstrates an attempt to delineate a new concept of “organic architecture”, related to his researches on a historiographic redefinition of the Modern Movement. Abstract:
This paper will argue that the connections that exist between architecture and political powers are located in representational functions of architecture. Representation is defined here as a culture-specific process of establishing the relationships between reality and the signs created to symbolize that reality. Architecture of Guatemala provides a unique material to study how representational constitution of symbolic places reflects an ideological struggle of two different cultures. To substantiate this point, I will expand on Tzvetan Todorov’s observations made in “The Conquest of America” and show how they could enhance our understanding of the symbolic function of architecture. The discussion of representational attributes and workings of architecture will be informed by a comparative reading of three cities in Guatemala: Mayan ruins in Tlkal, colonial city of Antigua, and indigenous Chichicastenango. My objective is to test the workings of this critical inquiry against the geography of power that these three cities represent.

Abstract:
Landscape, cavity, courtyard, skin, pergola are some of the elements of the Mediterranean abacus that architecture tries to transfigure into a single substance but also as a derivation of a great mother, the Mediterranean Sea. However, we can suppose that all these elements come from an idea that acts as a trait d'union, an intuition that made the domestic space of the Mare Nostrum the place of the myth of living: the innovative idea of horizon summarized as the ability of the gaze to observe outward. Gio Ponti, Bernard Rudofsky and Luigi Cosenza are the architects of the materialization of this idea where the horizon is not only found in the relationship with the landscape but is present within the domestic space. In this space full of symbolism and origin, three houses are a body to be vivisected and rediscovered. Casa per Positano... and other shores, Hotel San Michele in Capri, Casa a Procida become autoptic and utopian spaces from which to steal the secret of the Mediterranean Sea.
