Abstract:
The article reveals the history of the restoration activity formation on the example of the castle ruins restoration in Ukraine and Europe during the 19th-20th centuries. Castles have been constantly transforming since their foundation. Each subsequent owner of the castle strengthened it, restored it after its destruction, made changes to the building architecture. And in the 19th century, an understanding of the value of such architectural objects was developed, and various methods for their preservation began to be proposed. Stylistic restorations are considered on the example of Trakai Island Castle (Lithuania) and Pierrefonds castle (France). Archaeological restorations aimed at conserving objects reflect the Upper Castle in Vilnius (Lithuania) and Heidelberg Castle (Germany). Scientifically based, the restoration is presented at facilities in Olesko Castle (Ukraine) and in Warsaw, Inovlodz (Poland). Woodstock Palace (England) is an example of the architectural monument destruction, and Tatar Tower of Ostroh Castle (Ukraine) is a symbol of a good future which is revealed in front of the castles in a state of long ruin. Positions on the restoration of architectural monuments have been analyzed by a number of scientists such as Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, Alois Riegl, Camillo Boito, Yan Zakhvatovich. It was the restoration of the castle ruins that sparked a discourse on how to preserve architectural monuments. After all, a castle is one of the most complex types of structures, including its structure, location, and function. Since the beginning of their founding, castles have been the subject to constant interference with their material structure, which in the 19th century became more important than their utilitarian purpose. The conservation method comes out on top, but it is often paired with fragmentary restoration. In any case, the object must function and be visited, regardless of whether it is compositionally complete or fragmentarily preserved, because the interest in it ensures its further existence.

Abstract:
The first part of the essay reviews considerations made since the end of the Second World War in Germany on the conservation of modern architecture and it identifies the complex issue of the value of the memories that architecture carries in it, even in restoration projects which do not exclude modifications, the introduction of new parts and rebuilding. The objective is to identify the characteristics of critical and conservative restoration which leaves the traces of time and the losses on view, so that a 20th Century monument becomes a document of itself. The procedures followed for the conservative restoration of the Bauhaus buildings at Dessau are therefore carefully reviewed, reporting the progressive clarification of the method, which took final concrete form in the material conservation of the polychromes of the interior views through the application of conservation sciences.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the need to go beyond the “monumentalist” vision in restoration of built heritage and embrace principles of sustainability in this architectural practice. Design/methodology/approach Case studies as conceptual reference. Architectural typology. Findings The environmental crisis that is currently recognized as one of the most important problems that contemporary society must address urgently is a situation that still has not permeated enough in the practice of monumental restoration, which is still carried out using unlimited resources. Research limitations/implications In that sense, the close relationship between the built and the natural environment as an essential ingredient of the vernacular is analysed. Practical implications Much of the sustainable principles, that have been put forward as an example to be followed, are elements that have hundreds of years in the constructive tradition. Social implications In this context, vernacular architecture has much to contribute in the field of conservation by the enormous accumulated knowledge that its shapes, materials and social use represent. Originality/value This experience must be retrieved, but not as an aseptic laboratory experiment, but through its updated application and active implementation to improve the quality of life for inhabitants and contribute to the preservation of our cultural and natural environments.

Abstract:
The work of the architect David Chipperfield represents a paradigm for the architectural conservation field. Only a few of his projects are strictly considered conservation projects in the traditional sense based on the material restoration of buildings. However, most of his projects built anew make reference to concepts such as memory, context, place, history, familiarity, archetype, permanence, fragment, ruin or legibility, finding a place within what can be considered the expanded field of conservation. The architect transcends the material dimension of buildings and offers a dialogue throughout time that includes the present. In this sense, his practice differs from the traditional practitioners who give priority to past’s remnants. His conservation projects include strategies ranging from the most rigorous and scientific restoration to the most abstract interpretation and even invention without representing a conflict. This quality makes his work a referent in advancing the contemporary discourse of architectural conservation.

The article introduces the history of researches and study of the restoration of architectural monuments of the Temurid period. The architecture of the Temurid period of the Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, covering the period from the 14thto the 15thcenturies, is one of the brightest phenomena of world architecture. Amir Temur was one of the few leaders who was not only the creator of outstanding architectural masterpieces, but was also able to form a special architectural style in his state. The gardening art of this period also reached a high development. Therefore, the study and research of the architecture of this period, as well as its restoration is an extremely important task in world architecture. In this regard, the scientific, research, restoration works of many famous scientists, architects, architects-restorers are of great importance. Among them are Mauer, Zasypkin, Pugachenkova, Mankovskaya, Notkin, Zakhidov, Kryukov, Filimonov and many others who made invaluable contribution to the formation of and the development of the restoration school of Uzbekistan, as well as in the promotion and preservation of the cultural heritage of the Temurid period both in Uzbekistan and abroad. Abstract:
AbstractRecently most of the Gulf countries have had significant urban development, with innovative architecture, as a result of the production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in many places in the world. This has generated an unprecedented construction boom in the cities and the surrounding areas.Despite their rather short urban history, the Gulf States have recently launched several signatures mega-projects, where public investments are developing an urban structure of a global dimension. Affecting the direction of the rapid urbanization is a permanent tension between the creation of a new, modern cultural identity and the promotion of traditional architecture. One aim is to establish new connections with local history and cultural traditions. To reveal the challenge of the construction of a new architectural identity in the Arab emerging cities, this paper focuses on the action needed to preserve historical, cultural, traditional, and architectural heritage, with the aim of filling the gaps of knowledge and encouraging new research in the fields of restoration and conservation that will lead to future practical implementation. The paper also calls for a fresh look at the tradition, modernity, and identity, by outlining a number of aspects related to the current status of architectural heritage conservation in some Arab cities. Traditional culture, ancient architectural constructions, and vernacular architecture are the result of historical processes and products of Arab societies. Understanding this is an indispensable tool for the comprehension of the Arab modern cities, a knowledge which can influence their future expansion and revitalization, and the shaping of a new architectural identity in these areas. In the Arab regions, restoration methodologies also need to be defined and implemented with the aim of preserving cultural heritage and raising the conservation and restoration research profile among the international research community.

Abstract:
In Chinese traditional culture, the Hakka spirit embedded in traditional Hakka buildings occupies an extremely important position, and if the protection method is not appropriate, it will damage the typical buildings inherited by the Hakka for centuries, which is not conducive to the cultural inheritance of the Hakka. Traditional restoration methods are difficult to accurately and completely restore the original buildings due to reasons such as low efficiency, aging equipment and thus inability to achieve the expected restoration results. Based on the point cloud data obtained from CAD processing by 3D scanning technology, a comprehensive 3D building model information is established to form a building structure database, which is helpful for the formation of the Hakka traditional building database.

Abstract:
As a contribution to econometric research on the role of architectural heritage, this dissertation evaluates non-aggregate data for a total of 2142 designated National Priority Protected Sites (NPPS) in China using hedonic model and ordered probit model. Attempting to verify economic costs of conserving architectural heritage sites in China, the objectives of the dissertation are to find out the grading system of NPPS; to compare the monetary value and non-monetary value methods on architectural heritage conservation; to identify the current criteria of national heritage conservation maintenance funding (NHCMF) allocation for the NPPS; and to select and evaluate the key factors of NHCMF allocation for the NPPS. The research question of this dissertation is: “what are the decision criteria of NHCMF allocation in China?”. The dissertation conceives of one general hypothesis and 17 empirical hypotheses. The general hypothesis is based on the maintenance funding and grading system of each conservation project. The empirical hypotheses are generated from possible determined factors of NHCMF allocation, theories of sustainable development, economic value and heritage value. Based on the real market information, 7 factors have been identified as the determined factors of NHCMF allocation of NPPS. They are “average household income”, “annual economic benefit”, “average personal salary”, “population”, “ticket”, “types modern building” and “types revolutionary sites”. Of these 7 factors, on the one hand, “average household income”, “annual economic benefit”, “population”, “entry ticket fee” and “types (revolutionary sites)” have positive relationship with the maintenance cost. The positive relationship result implies that the revolutionary sites locate in economic developed area with more population and higher entry ticket fee are more likely to get more maintenance funding. On the other hand, “average personal salary” and “types (modern buildings)” have negative relationship with maintenance funding. The negative relationship result reflects that modern buildings of NPPS with higher average personal salary are less likely getting more maintenance funding. Based on the hypothetical market data, 4 factors have been identified as the determined factors of NHCMF allocation of NPPS. The factors of “population and “annual economic benefit” have the same relationship with monetary market data. The “maintenance funding” and “original usage” have negative relationship with grading system.

Abstract:
This proposed thesis is essentially a methodology for producing and assembling the graphic photo/documentation package of a large group of structures distributed over a broad geographic area. During the 1984/85 Indiana State Hospital Documentation Project, Department of Architecture, College of Architecture and Planning, it became evident that neither standards nor precedent existed within the State of Indiana for establishing appropriate levels of documentation for individuals, firms and/or agencies applying to the State Review Board/Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology for Certificates of Approval for demolition of historic structures. This thesis will begin with brief discussions of: 1) various levels of documentation, including identifying one (or several) levels appropriate for this project; 2) preliminary field survey of the sites and structures, including photography, field notes and the acquisition of historic architectural drawings; and, 3) planning and contract development stages.Following this introduction the thesis will treat, in detail, the development of graphic materials (photo and line) utilized i n both the printed text and its accompanying photo/data package. Of note will be sections pertaining to: 1) the development of a sequential format, treating the project as both a written document and a graphic product; 2) field photographic techniques; 3) acquiring/developing/utilizing maps/site plans; 4) obtaining historic architectural drawings; 5) producing H.A.B.S. drawings; 6) reducing for reproduction and subsequent archiving of historic and H.A.B.S. drawings; 7) completing approved survey cards; and, 8) developing a comprehensive indexing system for all graphic materials.A summary will include, but not be limited to: 1) an assessment of the project's immediate ability to satisfy contractual requirements; 2) the project's long term value as both a written and graphic thematic study; 3) suggestions for the establishment of a hierarchy of levels of documentation for structures of recognized or potential historic significance facing certain demolition; and, 4) recommendations for the establishment of minimum state standards of graphic documentation for each specific level identified in 3).

Abstract:
The retention of historic structures and the information which they contain, the basic goals of historic preservation, has occurred with increasing frequency in the twenty-year period following the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Admittedly, the ideal scenario involves the retention and reuse of architecturally or historically important structures. However, occasionally notable buildings are found which are located upon sites earmarked for new construction or which have deteriorated to a condition which makes restoration or adaptive reuse not economically feasible. Adequate documentation prior to the destruction of such buildings not only preserves the information therein contained, but also may encourage reuse of some structures by making the owner aware of their contribution to the streetscape, to local history or to the architectural history of a community or region.Although parameters for adequate documentation exist at the national level for national landmarks, state and local standards are vague at best, leaving both the professional and the non-professional preservationist to determine the level of documentation and the amount of research required. Difficult at best for the professional, documentation in the absence of guidelines frequently proves disastrous for the non-professional.This thesis is the product of a documentation project conducted between September 1984 and October 1985 to provide "adequate documentation" for a client of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Having no established guidelines or precedent to follow, and instructed to produce "adequate documentation" for 28 structures at six Indiana State Hospitals, the documentation team learned much during the fourteen-month process of producing both written and graphic documentation. The author presents this descriptive analysis of one component of the documentation process - the preparation of the 331-page written text which accompanied photographs and H.A.B.S. drawings. While each project differs, the Indiana State Hospital Project established a precedent which may be referred to By the C.A.P. when faced with similar projects in the future.

The 'culture of sustainability' is rapidly developing across the United States and the globe. Prompted by economic and environmental crisis, the need to understand and implement sustainable practices has become the paramount objective of the building industry. Utilization of historic preservation as a response to sustainable development is an important aspect of the building profession not yet fully understood, though its roots are found in the "new life for old buildings" movement of the 1970s. This lack of understanding is, in part, due to limited research addressing the conservation and sustainability of the existing building stock within the United States. This thesis will provide case study research on successful sustainable preservation strategies that have been filtered through the National Register of Historic Places and the LEED Green Building Rating System, helping to define the opportunities for beneficial interchange.

Abstract:
Tuff, a sedimentary rock made of volcanic ash, is a traditional building material in the Campania region. Since its foundation Naples’ architecture, whether monumental or vernacular, has been erected in tuff masonry and only the arrival of concrete and steel has meant its downfall. Due to the soft nature of tuff, traditionally the building material was designed to be covered by plaster and very few and monumental architectures, by selecting and sculpting to the purpose the rock, were designed to be fair-faced. In years the exposition to natural and artificial degradation agents has brought a wide variety of deterioration phenomena both on the fair-faced tuff masonry and the ones that had lost plaster. In approaching the restoration of these architectures, the conservator is faced with a challenging task. This is due to the difficulty of balancing the pursue of minimum intervention and authenticity respect, the conservation of the historic consolidated image of the architecture and the necessity of using the best restoration techniques that guarantee the highest conservation of the material in future years, with particular regard to bio-compatible and sustainable materials both for operators and the environment. By analyzing the restoration of various architectures, both archaeological and modern, the paper will address this difficult task and the different decisions made by the conservators in relation to the monuments’ nature, identity, history and status of conservation. The paper is based on a multidisciplinary approach due to the contribution of the expertise of an architect, a restorer and an archaeologist.

Abstract:
Conservation and enhancement of ruined fortified systems in Tanaro Valley (Piedmont)The contribution reports on a research concerning the preparatory investigation of some fortified systems of Tanaro Valley (Piedmont) in view of their restoration. The research highlighted the strong connection between the castles and the memory of events and characters that were linked to these architectures; the relationship between landscape and ruins that, today, represents a potential resource for the territory; the willingness of local authorities to improve knowledge, protection and enhancement of this heritage; the need to investigate theoretical and methodological issues and define the proper procedures for the conservation, restoration, safeguard, maintenance and management of a widespread and vulnerable heritage. The study, taking advantage of interdisciplinary contributions, used innovative instruments for the survey and monitoring of this heritage, as well as graphic and digital restitution techniques to propose to the scientific community –and communicate to the native population– the interventions of restoration, conservation, enhancement and management of these fortified systems. The research demonstrates that particular attention has to be paid to these less-known historical architectures that can however contribute, as effectively as the most famous and eye-catching fortification systems, to the political and social development and to the historical identity whose recognition, preservation and valorization are strongly hoped for.

Given the growing relevance, at national and international levels, of restoration and conservation interventions on existing buildings, the Universities have developed degree courses with specific addresses in “Conservation of Architectural and Environmental Heritage”. The students that attend this course become a graduate with specific, extensive, and updated skills in the field of knowledge, protection, conservation, reuse, and enhancement of architectural and environmental heritage. The complexity of the intervention is faced through the contribution of the various disciplines that contribute to the training of the architect, at the same time they studied modern instruments and tools for collecting and managing data, from on-field survey to sharing projects and ideas. The goal is to learn to manage, in its entirety, the project and the range of possible interventions with deep conservative sensitivity, with skills ranging from maintenance to restoration and redevelopment, both in the dimension of the single building and at the urban and landscape scale.

Abstract:
The Mediterranean fortified heritage, as is well known, represents an architectural testimony of considerable interest that has often been subject to destruction, reconstruction and abandonment over the centuries. Significant in the field of the conservation of this heritage was the ICOMOS Guidelines on fortifications and military heritage (2021), which attempted to establish basic principles for restoration work on these artefacts, with the objective of guaranteeing the authenticity and integrity of both morphological and functional works. Among the principles contained in the cited Guidelines is that of conservation through activities and research aimed at a preliminary knowledge of the constructive and material complexity of the heritage under investigation. The present paper, being part of this context and of a wider ongoing research focused on the analysis of the Balkan fortified heritage, proposes the knowledge of the Byzantine Fortress of Trikala in Greece through the discipline of restoration. The research intends to show the state of conservation of the analysed castle in order to propose possible enhancement strategies starting from an instrumental survey carried out using digital cameras and drones. The objective is to obtain an accurate preliminary knowledge of the place, making possible the subsequent elaboration of strategies aimed at the conservation and enhancement of an heritage with a high testimonial value that is little known and not adequately enhanced.

Abstract:
The subject of vernacular architecture, as is well known, is a vast concept embracing different fields of investigation. It is a type of art created to suit specific lifestyles of single communities, such as the Islamic community. Bazaars, characteristic markets in Eastern countries, are a significant example in this context. The proposed contribution intends to analyse these architectural and urban environments in Albania and Macedonia, through the discipline of restoration aimed at knowledge, documentation and conservation. The proposed case studies represent a significant example of how the restoration of these areas is of fundamental importance for the urban regeneration of historic cities. The Bazaar in Skopjie has always been regarded as the cultural, spiritual, economic and historical centre of the capital. This site, from an architectural point of view, has managed to create an image of the old city in the new city, preserving its original identity features over the centuries. In Tirana, on the other hand, the new Bazaar is a genuine urban regeneration project that aims to preserve the Albanian cultural tradition. If the Bazaar in Skopjie is in a precarious state of conservation, while maintaining its original character, the recently rebuilt Albanian market is an important example of not only architectural but also urban regeneration. The proposed research has foreseen different operational phases: an initial analysis of the historical transformations of the areas under investigation; an identification on a territorial scale and a subsequent analysis on an architectural scale using the restoration discipline. The aim of the investigation is to identify the level of use and conservation of both Bazaars, in order to elaborate digital documents on a cognitive basis for the identification of guidelines for the conservation and enhancement project of the case studies taken as a model for the proposed research.

Columbu, Stefano, Gian Matteo F. Picchizzolu, and Antonio Cazzani. "The construction materials and static-structural aspects of the Budello tower (Teulada, southwest Sardinia, Italy)." Abstract:
The Budello tower is located on a slight promontory from which it dominates the entire bay of Teulada and the towers of Sant’Isidoro, Pixinni, Malfatano and Porto Scudo. The tower, built in 1601 with irregular ashlars of local stones (mainly of magmatic-intrusive origin), has a truncated cone shape, an external diameter of 10,2 m and a height of 11,80 m. Inside it consists of a single room, with a domed vault and a central pillar, equipped with a embrasure, a fireplace, a trap door in the cistern, and a staircase, from which the square of arms was accessed. It was a torre de armas garrisoned by: 1 commander (in 1603), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1767), 1 artilleryman and 3 soldiers (1801), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1812). Although it underwent several restorations, documented as early as the years 1617-1619, the tower remained generally in good condition until the period 1763-1784, in which new restoration works were carried out including the closure of the parade ground with a classic parapet with gunboats and battlements. Other restoration works are carried out in 1808, 1819 and 1840. The tower remained in operation until 1843. Like all the other coastal fortifications, it was then definitively demilitarized with the Regio Decreto of 25 April 1867. Specific objectives of the research are the petrographic and physical-mechanical analysis of the stones and ancient mortars used in the construction of the tower, the structural analysis of the building and related geometric-constructive characteristics. The final intention is to understand the decay processes taking place on the tower both in terms of materials and static-structural aspects, and to envisage possible restoration interventions to be implemented aimed at its conservation.

Abstract:
Castillejo of Monteagudo (Murcia, Spain). Comprehensive analysis for Islamic structures conservation in seismic regionsThe Castillejo of Monteagudo, which was built on second half of the twelfth century, is a fortified palace situated on rural suburbs of Murcia. It is 4 km to the northeast from the historic center of the city. This monument was part of a big almunia constitued by several emblematic buildings and some important hydraulic and agricultural infrastructures. It is unique in the Iberian Peninsula so its study and conservation are important to understand a not so well known historical period. The walls of this building were constructed in rammed earth and they contained one of the most important cruised patio of hispanic-muslim architecture. In spite of been listed as a Cultural Interest property its conservation state is awful. Its abandonment hinders its preservation for future generations. The Region of Murcia is an area with seismic activity. So, considering the place where the Castillejo is located, a seismic-structural study from a virtual model is executed to check its behavior in front of an earthquake. The results supply relevant information of both its current structural conservation state and its behavior or damages in case of a seismic event. That allow us to assess how urgent an intervention is and also it assures the correct way of conservation, restoration and maintenance.

Abstract:
On April 12, 2023, photos of a newly restored French villa in Hanoi with a budget of 14 billion VND were published. Discussions were rigorous with the participation of the public and architects about the seemingly new and strange color of the villa. Many references to the original colors have been provided. The case seems to end on April 14, 2023, when the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem District claimed that the current colors are just studies, not official color of the work. This article does not specifically discuss this case. The writer wants to take this opportunity to provide some background theories in architectural conservation - restoration, which has not been discussed much with the public in Vietnam. The writer admits that the approach is somewhat biased towards Preservation than Restoration, partly due to past training and work experience. TLDR: Preservation - Restoration are two opposing approaches with their own advantages and disadvantages. Most of the world heritage interventions are a combination of these two. Above all, this confrontation is still an open discussion, and is still evolving.
