Sert, Gul Berrak. "A Survey On Photographic Representation In Architectural Magazine Covers: Covers Of Arredamento-mimarlik." Master's thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12608044/index.pdf.

Abstract:
This study has an aim of exploring how a Turkish architectural magazine, Arredamento Mimarlik, communicates itself to the reader by its cover designs. Since, representation is a tool for architects to transmit ideas and express positions in the discipline of architecture, usage of representation in architectural media has a critical role to promote the communication in architecture. The theoretical framework of the research based on the photographic image investigation of Roland Barthes. In the light of this investigation, the study cites that photographic images with accompaniment of texts transmit messages which construct the communicative role of magazine covers in architectural media. In the realm of predefined identity of a magazine, the interpretation of cover concept confronts with a critical position which identifies magazine&rsquo
s approach to both architecture and its mediatic character. Since Arredamento-Mimarlik is a significant magazine which has a discursive approach on cover concept, the publication history and critical position of the magazine is investigated elaborately in the light of B&uuml
lent Erkmen&rsquo
s, the designer of the covers, and Ugur Tanyeli&rsquo
s, the managing editor, citations. Through this survey on Arredamento Mimarlik covers, the representation of architecture in media through a significant representative tool-magazine cover- is studied in terms of signification character of image and text. In this sense, the critical role of magazine which orients the comprehension of architecture in society is emphasized as a discursive value in addition to magazine&rsquo
s informative character.

ROSARIO, PINA GRICELYS. "Caribbean modernisms. The discourse on the modern dwelling in four architectural magazines, 1945-1960." Doctoral thesis, Politecnico di Torino, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11583/2618309.

Abstract:
The dissertation examines the relationship between modernity, dwelling and architecture in the Caribbean through an analysis of the postwar disciplinary debates in four architectural magazines Arquitectura (Cuba), Proa (Colombia), Arquitectura/México (Mexico) and Integral (Venezuela). The complexity of the debates on the house shows how the definition of what was modern was not limited to the professional domain, but was simultaneously a cultural, political and disciplinary construction. This research adopts Bourdieu’s theoretical framework regarding the field of cultural production to examine the architectural magazines’ involvement in the production and reproduction of architectural knowledge, and their capacity to establish a common standard of living as the key criterion for modernity and to legitimate a professional practice faithful to the needs of modern living. The investigation reconstructs the collective imagery on the modern dwelling, by scanning all the production mechanisms – debates, advertisement, projects, ideas, technical progress and modernization processes – diffused and discussed through the architectural magazines, that had a critical ongoing impact on the domestic architecture culture. There are three main narratives to this research: The modern image of the home, which analyses the single ideas, spatial and formal innovations and modernizing factors that shaped a common vision of the modern home, an approach that examines the house not as a unified entity but as one modeled by a series of paradigms, theories, programs and technological choices related to the cultural setting and its modernizing processes; collective housing: social housing and the tall urban building and the single-family house, proposes a transversal examination of the three housing typologies radically transformed by modernity in the Caribbean – or born with it – to observe the theories, projects and debates that defined the modern dwelling, through a review of the production apparatus behind the changes on each category, and that is, the institutions linked to its development, their impact on the various fields of the discipline, the changes on the architectural referents, the new spaces and programs to accommodate modern living ideals, the paradigm shifts caused by the implementation of new types supporting different social interactions, and the productive structures and modernizing forces that made essential, and possible, certain living standards.

Suwatcharapinun, Sant. "Spaces of male prostitution : tactics, performativity and gay identities in streets, Go-Go bars and magazines in contemporary Bangkok, Thailand." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10720/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the spatial practices of male prostitutes meeting gay male clients in various urban environments in Bangkok, Thailand. The research focuses on the male prostitutes’ spatial practices in three meeting places: the streets around Saranrom park, the gay go-go bars in Surawong’s Boys’ Town, and the representations of space in local gay newsletters. Examining the male prostitutes’ spatial practices through ‘tactics’, this research suggests that male prostitutes use the meeting places differently as ways of responding to the ‘strategies’ of gay male clients. This research also suggests that the tactics of male prostitutes can be examined by exploring the relationship between spatial practices and subjectivities. By exploring how specific performative acts constitute male prostitutes’ subjectivities, this research suggests that male prostitutes ‘perform’ homosexuality. This thesis draws upon Judith Butler’s performativity theory as a discursive mode of constituting subjects and Michel de Certeau’s theoretical discussion, specifically spatial practices of ‘strategies’ and ‘tactics’, as a means of differentiating between ‘place’ and ‘space’. Methodologically, this research works in two directions: the first explores how the spatial practices of male prostitution produce ‘gay’ subjectivities in the moment of sexual encounter – arguing that male prostitutes actively reposition themselves as ‘subjects’ rather than ‘objects’ through spatial and sexual practices; and the second examines the social and sexual constitution of space – arguing that ‘places’ are produced as ‘spaces’ through the practices and tactics of male prostitutes. This research aims to make an original contribution to knowledge in four main ways. The first is an exploration of the relationship between de Certeau’s spatial theory of ‘tactics’ and Butler’s concept of ‘performativity’ as a constitution of subjectivity. The second is the use of de Certeau and Butler’s theories to explore three spaces of male prostitution in contemporary Bangkok, Thailand, through observations drawn from interviews, accounts of spatial experience, and discussions of various representations of space. The third is a reconsideration of these theories of performativity and spatial practices in the light of the specific conditions of the case studies in Bangkok. The fourth is the production of new forms of cross-disciplinary knowledge to bring this discussion of tactics, performativity and gay subjectivities in streets, go-go bars and magazines into architectural history and theory, thereby producing new ways of understanding how spaces are produced through encounters and looks.

Abstract:
This work aims at identifying, in the architectonical speeches of Architecture magazines published in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 1920 and 1940, the presence of a technological thinking related to the constructive processes, as well as to the material study, reception of modern conceptions, problematization of the economic dwellings, possibilities of a national architecture and to the propagation of new constructive possibilities, articulated to a propitious context for the conformation of the Brazilian modern architecture. It was verified that there was a technological development and the introduction of national building material industries, and that the consolidation of the Brazilian modern architecture occurred in a parallel and articulated way, but not in a dependent one, sometimes taking hold of the already existent technological resources, sometimes demanding new solutions that would fulfill the language worries, sometimes operating in the inner of the technical-constructive difficulties, and despite them, being successfully performed. In this process, the housing matter stayed outside of the debates present in the periodical of the researched time, not conforming to a new program bounded to the new statute of the new architecture.

Abstract:
This essay addresses the relationships between the intellectual field of architecture and its design activities, in the attempt to recognize connections among cultural, aesthetics and political avant-garde projects, with professional practices. Our specific focus is the exchanges between Flavio Mottas work and the architectural environment of São Paulo, throughout his critical activity, as a professor of Art History, and his direct work with some architects. Primarily we begin with a brief presentation of Flavio Mottas path, stressing in his teaching activities at the MASP (São Paulo Art Museum), and as a professor at both Universities FAAP and FAU_USP. From there we develop two specific surveys: the first is centered in the introduction text that Motta wrote for the Zodiac Magazines special issue about Brazilian Architecture in 1960; the second focuses in the exhibition plan that he conceived for the Brazilian Pavilion project to the Osakas International Exhibition in 1970, which project was design by the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

Abstract:
This work refers to the written documentation about the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992). It is the result of a survey of the archives of her written works. It structures the data bank to organize the catalog of her texts which contain bibliographic information, data from magazines and abstracts, and it indicates the archives where the texts are. Also, this research unveils the intellectual scene of the publications in which the architect worked both in Italy and in Brazil. Through the survey of her colleagues fundamental ideas in the 1940-46 rationalist Italy and the debate in magazines and newspapers such as Domus, Casabella, Lo Stile, and Grazia, the context in which modern architecture consolidated in the country presents itself. The discourse variegated between the aesthetic and technical definitions of rationalism and the social-political positions. Lina Bo Bardi, newly graduated then, absorbed this debate in a structural fashion into her professional activities in Brazil. The research also addresses the panorama of ideas on architecture in modernist Brazil post-Brasília from 1947 to 1985 to structure the pathway of the written works of the immigrant artist. Elaborating her ideas on architecture either in magazines such as Habitat, Mirante das Artes, Malasartes, or in newspapers from that period, Lina Bo Bardi collaborated with the diffusion of the national modern architecture, emphasizing the construction of an urban culture based on the state of the art experiences in modernist Europe, and on a non-alienated sense for the popular lexicon. The research also publishes facsimiles of articles about this state of questions in the architectural field both in Brazil and in Italy. They are articulated to the scenery of concepts and debates in which Lina Bo Bardis idea of architecture was steadily built.

Abstract:
In the beginning of the 20th century industrialization promoted the supply of work in large cities, giving rise to a shortage of economic housing. The increase in the population observed in large cities in the 20’s creates new health and hygiene problems, to which architects seek to respond both in opinion articles and in the design of architectural projects, which are published in architectural and construction journals. By identifying the need to promote, design and build economic housing, it was sought to research how the answer to this problem is expressed in the architect’s professional practice, exploring its dissemination in the 1st series of the magazine A Architectura Portugueza (1908-1929). The established methodology led to the conclusion that, in view of a pressing social need in urban areas, there was a professional class response to the need to build decent and comfortable economic housing, which was disseminated in architectural journals.

Abstract:
This work intends to discuss the unity and plurality of the architectonic environment of São Paulo, through their social networks, professional spaces and critical movements, using as primary source some specialized magazines, published in the city between 1945 and 1965. The study will investigate the relationship between an intellectual group - a parcel of architects working in São Paulo - and its manifestations, seeking to understand the particular space in which some of its professional ties, cultural and ideological exchanges, and projetual attitudes were developed. The first chapter seeks to outline the social networks of those architects, through the intersection of urban space, cultural, professional and academic institutions. The second chapter studies the local criticism - their intellectual approaches, disarticulations, fractures and dislocations - across their inner dialogues and their different looks launched on Brazilian contemporary architecture, especially the one produced in Rio de Janeiro. Finally, the third chapter aims to approach the projectual dialogues between the local architects through the analysis of some architectural competition held in São Paulo in the period and that found an echo in local architecture magazines.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1993.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 125-126).
This thesis inquires into Sunset's activity as a home magazine in the 1930s and 1940s. In viewing this period, this study draws from Sunset's entire history: from its inception in 1898 as a travel brochure for Southern Pacific Railroad, through a period as a literary magazine, through the late 1940s when it was already recognized as a leading western home magazine. In the 50th Anniversary issue, the editors reflected on the magazine's accomplishments and concluded that Sunset had been a "constructive and helpful influence in the development of Western homes and Western home life." This thesis investigates the extent of Sunset's interaction within this development. Three separate enterprises that reveal the magazine's attempt to define domesticity for the 'westerner' will be outlined in this thesis. First, spanning Sunset's first fifty years, a construction of a concept called Western Living is revealed by following the development of the magazine's departments and subtitles. Second, focusing on a period that begins with the Great Depression and ends with the postwar migration to the suburbs, Sunset's involvement in a search for the appropriate 'western' home unfolds through a study of a series of articles. This endeavor deemed the Ranch Style house as the 'western' house, and with that, the magazine's Western Living construct was completed. Finally, a study of Sunset's exploration of the 'backyard' and the relationship between the house and the constrained and ubiquitous lot ends this investigation. The author of this thesis presents the first comprehensive study of Sunset's mode of operation as a home magazine. It is the intent that this inquiry will initiate a discussion regarding the role of the popular home magazine as an operative variant of architectural discourse.
by Robert Alexander Gonzalez.
M.S.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes Acrópole and Habitat magazines, published in São Paulo city, between 1950 and 1956, in order to understand their relationship with the progress of Modern Architecture principles and practices through those years. Abstract:
In France, the period that stretches from the end of the 1950s to the end of the 1970s is marked by major political, economic and social upheavals. These upheavals reverberate in the pressing questions that permeate the architectural field, which passes from the Reconstruction of France to urban crisis, and from the assessment of the failure of modern urbanism, to return to questions of the city, history and the foundations of the discipline of architecture. This transformation was experienced and fostered by the generation of architect-intellectuals trained in the 1960s at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Having contributed to the critical evaluation of the pedagogical structures of their school, these student-architects became the principal actors of the foundation of the Unités Pédagogiques d'Architecture, and of the birth of architectural research in France. Driven by the issue of self-representation, these architects insisted upon the importance of a re-intellectualization of their discipline, and positioned themselves in opposition to a pragmatic architectural practice. Their actions were expressed, revolved around, and were concretized by a series of magazines initiated, founded and/or actively contributed to by these same actors. If the issue of self-representation became the frame of reference and the central concern for these architects, it is through their editorial activities that they rethought their teaching, their profession and their practice. The aim of this dissertation is to highlight on the one hand, the renewal of the issues and aspirations of these French architects, and on the other, the productive role played by the editorial apparatus in the elaboration of the new representations that these actors proposed. If their editorial activities enabled them to articulate the relationships between the architectural field, their positions and their aspirations, they also highlighted to what extent these available editorial tools constructed the different facets of the figure of the architect-intellectual that these young architects wished to become. The dissertation seeks to illuminate the implications of these editorial activities on architectural thought during the 1960s, on the breaking down of established architectural pedagogy, and on the transformation of the self-representation of these young architects. The dissertation also demonstrates to what extent these magazines contributed to the putting aside of architectural practice, and ultimately, to architects without architecture

Abstract:
I have zoomed in and out, cut and pasted, simplified and exaggerated my way through twelve shelf metres of Swedish architecture history. My ambition with this project has been to understand how Swedish architecture has been narrated in The Swedish Review of Architecture - tidskriften Arkitektur - during the 113 years the publication has existed. Has its "dramaturgy" changed and is this reflected in the development of Swedish design? Through using the architectural skills I have developed through my education, I was able to use the relatively simple, yet complex technique of photomontage as a means of analysing historical images. Each montage, once composed, vividly suggest certain tendencies of different historical periods, from the use of material, the social ways in which spaces are inhabited, the way light is managed, and so forth. I developed this method of photomontage because it exposes much more than documentary photography and writing. The project suggest an active engagement in history, rather than a passive acceptance of thing that have been. The final spreads can be read as retrospective and visionary simultaneously, to open up for several readings, and a possibility to keep on producing more material.

Abstract:
This work is part of a wider research on the relationship between Italy and the Nordic countries, headed by prof. Antonello Alici at the Università Politecnica delle Marche. The work is organized chronologically around the analysis of both Italian articles on Nordic countries and original archival materials, tracing back the mutual relationships with the Italian audience, focusing on artistic and architectural travels and exhibitions. In particular, the research focuses on the events related to the nation –Sweden– which first had the most relevant introduction into Italian Architecture since the first Venetian Biennale in 1895. The first chapter investigates the genesis of this relationship before the beginning of the First World War, thanks to the contribution of figures as Vittorio Pica and Ferdinand Boberg. The second chapter deals with the consequences occurred after the First World War, with the emigration of the futurist Arturo Ciacelli (1883-1966), the engraver Guido Balsamo Stella (1882-1941) and the travels of the architect Giuseppe Broglio (1874-1956). The third chapter concentrates on the two Fascist decades, focusing on the role of Institutions like the Triennale in Milan and the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome. Finally, the last chapter examines the Post-war period, when Italian admiration for Swedish design and architecture found interesting resonances both in the INA Casa plans as well as in some exhibition projects, in the work of Italian architects like Piero Bottoni (1903-1973), Piero Maria Lugli (1923-2008), Gio Ponti and Franco Albini (1905-1977). The research highlights how the new Institutions, on the heels of the ones founded in the previous decades, like the Swedish Institute (SI) and the Italian Institute of Culture in Stockholm (IIC) –both still active nowadays– had a fundamental role in the International propaganda. Finally, the thesis discusses how this complex combination of personal experiences, art and architectural magazines and official institutions formed the real background for an historian like Bruno Zevi, who was the first to insert three Nordic masters in his seminal pamphlet Verso un’architettura organica, and Leonardo Benevolo, who in 1960 recognized the role of ‘peripheral’ areas like Sweden and Finland, in his History of Modern Architecture.

The effects of the &amp
#8216
new&amp
#8217
and &amp
#8216
ideal&amp
#8217
life accelerated by the establishment of the new democratic nation state brought rapid changes and transformations to all aspects of life including housing. This study deals with the housing discourse in Yedig&uuml
n magazine which was published weekly during the single party era of the Republic. It was published weekly from 1933 to 1950 and was followed by a wide portion of the society, as an important popular magazine of the era. Its effort to present articles, pictures and news on housing and decoration for 17 years, with only short interruptions, makes it necessary to investigate these popular architectural products. In this study, it is claimed that the visual and the written material of Yedig&uuml
n magazine, related to house, is part of the theme of what is called &amp
#8216
ideal home&amp
#8217
. Abstract:
It examines and interprets the development of spatial and plastic typologies in the production of architectural modern single homes. Their environments and relationship solutions related with the city in the context of their historical, social, economic, technological and cultural features as part of a brazilian architecture. Questioning and verifying the existence of a particular typology in the brazilian\'s modernism movement supporting the formulation of a distinguished feature, which has its own particularities inside the more expressive brazilian\'s modernism vein. According to the Acrópole magazine, a brazilian periodical specialized in architecture with the longest period of publications in Brazil (May 1938 to December 1971). This magazine based in the city of Sao Paulo focused on publishing single homes works, mainly in that city. This work uses as its reference temporal scale the magazines editorial change, since September 1952 (until December 1971). This period is considered the mainly search of resource in this essay when the brazilian modern architecture intensifies its theoretical and practical production debate. When the city\'s population was growing and the industrial sector was developing. The intensification of its cultural activities and modernization discussions was incorporated in a different scale of the modernity idea. At the same time the brazilian architecture develops itself working its own dimensions and acquiring modern particular features such as a national identity former. All in all, this essay demands to expose the architectural diversity in the modern architecture in Sao Paulo, verifying distinctions in its mainly slope from the moment it acquires its single and particular features distinguishing itself from the Rio de Janeiros school. Finally, this architectural plurality which this essay verifies explores new theories, guaranteed by new materials features and possibilities brought by the new technology offered in the building system. These issues have been incorporated with more plurality in the Brazilian architecture than a new theorys simple application might suggest, mainly in the previous period of its model recognized as hegemonic in the modern architecture.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the magazine G : Material zur elementaren Gestaltung, published by Hans Richter in Berlin between 1923 and 1926. Standing at the crossroads of Dada, De Stijl, Bauhaus and russian constructivism, G brought together an eclectic group of avant-garde artists, architects and filmmakers (among which Theo van Doesburg, Mies van der Rohe, El Lissitzky, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Kurt Schwitters, Hans Arp, Werner Gräff and Viking Eggeling). After the analysis of the concrete aspects of its publication (edition and distribution), of its format and graphic design, and after the reconstruction of the different steps of its foundation around the specific constellation formed around the “Group G”, we examine G’s connection to the international network of avant-garde magazines, by showing its turntable role between the avant-gardes of Western and Central-Eastern Europe and Russia. We then analyse its specific aesthetic project, based on the “elemental configuration” [elementare Gestaltung] of various materials (articles, photographs, artistic and architectural objects, technical objects, fashion and leisure objects), according to the principle of the economy of means. Finally, we resituate G’s artistic and intellectual project within the contemporary political dimension, by showing that its engagement consisted in its internationalist orientation and collective organisation, in the emancipatory potential assigned to new media (one main objective was to exploit all the possibilities of film medium in order to transform human perception) and in its desire to radically reconfigure the material and cultural environment of human being

99
With the rapid development of digital technology and the coming of paperless era, reading e-information has almost become a part of daily life. Under the situation of massive information, it is important to rapidly search for and grasp the information one needs. However, because there are many information resources and the quality varies, a great deal of unprocessed information may lead to the phenomena of incomplete information and information interference. Therefore, users tend to lose their directions after reading for a while. As a result, it is important to provide user-based visual information presentation and information architecture in an e-reading system to enable users to find the information they need. Taking e-magazines in Taiwan for example, current e-magazines usually directly transform the content in the hardcopy into “actual e-version of the magazine” and integrate with different reading devices to enable users to read online or off-line after downloading the contents. Because different cognitive behaviors may be developed during the browsing and reading of different media, it is necessary to investigate whether it is easy for users to find and use the information via the visual information presentation and information architecture of e-magazines. Past studies on information architecture focused on the depth and width of information architecture, and seldom investigated the relationship between visual information presentation and information architecture. Based on the investigation on relevant literature, this study intend to understand the current development of e-magazines in Taiwan, use KJ approach to generalize the information architecture of e-magazines, use user task to conduct an experiment, and use perception scale to investigate the correlation between visual information and information architecture of e-magazines.

90
This study is mainly through the real cases posted on the domestic relevant architecture magazines to examine the historical state of external space planning for “Single Housing and Condominium”. The purpose is for the designer to explore the tendency of planning methods for the construction style for external space, space allotment, and the formation of outside realm for buildings, and also control the demands of the inhabitants. The study method is from an independent sample to analyze its graphical data, planning ideas, and the housing external spaces. Also, the sample showing “the elemental construction analysis relationship” between the building assembles and the units. This study concludes five results: 1. From these samples, the base surroundings of the buildings are commonly adjacent to next buildings, roads, pedestrian roads and etc, namely environments which are created by humankind. In order to isolate these surroundings, “enclosing walls” are mostly used to have the single-layered border to distinct with the land base line. 2. Under the limitations of the width, depth, acre scale, shut area ratio, construction allotments and other conditions, the external space of single housing will establish “Segregation” style and “Wrapped” style while the condominium housing will have “Segregation”, “Wrapped” and “Atrium” three styles。 3. The basic constituting units of the external space for housing includes six functional spaces which are walking path, leisure, exercising, water view, plants growing and parking lots; among them, the plants growing is the most popular one, whereas leisure and exercise space are tended to be allotted in the backyard. 4. The planning of construction unit from external space whose function is apparently determined, but its methods are various. 5. The planning method for housing external space reflects the consideration of privacy, security, leisure, and outside communication between the inhabitants and the designers.

Abstract:
Essas ideias encontram contexto no ambiente cultural europeu e norte-americano do pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Between 1959 and 1963 the Dutch architecture magazine Forum was edited by Dick Apon, Jaap Bakema, Gert Boon, Aldo van Eyck, Joop Hardy, Herman Hertzberger and Jurriaan Schrofer. The twenty issues produced by these editors, which included a final issue in July 1967, is a manifesto in slow motion, a coherent unity, with each issue adding a new chapter to the ‘Story of Another Idea’, the theme and title of the first issue of the new editors, which came out in September 1959 and was presented during the last CIAM meeting in Otterlo, and the subsequent full emergence of Team Ten. A magazine is not only a vehicle for images and ideas, but also a tangible printed product. The making of Forum, including its organizational and financial aspects, form a crucial part of its existence as well. While Forum is often considered as an outlet of Team Ten, in which Bakema and Van Eyck played a pivotal role, the editorial direction of the magazine was only very loosely connected to the discussions within Team Ten. The most striking parallel between the new Forum and Team Ten, aside from the involvement of Bakema and Van Eyck in both, was that each represented a consensual generational changing of the guards, a transition which was not only accepted but also actively stimulated by the older generation. The ideas of Forum circled around the central issue of dwelling, being at home and finding one’s place in the world, in line with the never completed Charter of Habitat, which CIAM members had tried to formulate since 1953. These ideas are contextualized in a West European and North American cultural climate after the Second World War.

Abstract:
102
Representations of Contemporary Architectural Magazines in Consumer Society Abstract An architectural magazine is in fact a process of creating large quantities of images and ideologies. How a space is transformed into a flat reproduction represents a given ideology. It is how the editor utilizes flat dimensions to form a space that expresses the sense of location of the architecture and that transmits an experience of being onsite to the readers. It is also an objective commentary and description, representing a connected societal process. Magazine editors are always reproducers, they describe a story that belongs to them, and we live within their stories. In the 1980s, real-estate began to flourish, and with the appearance of leisure consumption spaces, architecture gradually developed to have a focus on consumption. After the government removed restrictions, Taiwanese society gradually revealed a new middle class. Through transformations in media publications, events, and era characteristics, the majority of current publications utilize a mixed approach to editing with injections of emerging culture. The pulse of magazines and current events as a whole are now interconnected. Architect Magazine was first published in 1975, and witnessed the flourishing development and transformation of Taiwanese architecture while also accurately recording its development. After restrictions were lifted in 1990, architecture media and culture began to possess many different development methods. The present study will investigate the reasons and context for the formation of transformations after 1990. The 1990s was a period of fierce competition in architecture magazines, with the addition of a myriad of architectural magazines offering a variety of voices that could be transformed into images, photos, and text and published through media (magazines, articles). There are currently many phenomena that are results of the influence of broadcast, images, and text. Behind these resulting ideologies, representations of authority and changes in the trends of time are worthy of in-depth investigation. Every magazine has represented a transmitted ideology, and the focus of the present study is to fully analyze and unravel the characteristics of these ideologies along with modern architecture cultural thinking. Less comprehensive measures were in place due to the development delay and poor market. The researcher believes that the segment range, technology developers should be more committed to improve the interface design of the e-magazine application, and adjustment of visual and information architecture step by step, in order to enhance the user experience of reading. The purpose of this study is the interface for use with experience feelings research of the magazines transformation application on the mobile device. Three existing e-magazine application were used as samples, the researcher observed and analyzed user mental models in the visual and information architecture on the interface. The exploration and study is the software development whether user demand thinking designed to help clearly grasp the information and avoid reading disorientation. This study includes two parts of experiments: (1) The user interface investigation for the current e-magazine application. It explored the icon layouts and style of reading auxiliary function. By understanding the functionality, procedure, interface satisfaction rate, and system usability, an interaction designer can generate important user requirements to be incorporated in the future design. (2) Combine the first stage experiment results with the relevant literatures to help conduct validate experiment. The experiment has been planned base on a 2 (auxiliary icon layouts) by 3 (content guide mode) two-way ANOVA design. There are two levels in the independent variable of auxiliary icon layouts: (1) Apparent auxiliary icon layouts which pop-up independent window: All auxiliary icon layouts are arranged. After a user clicks the information, it will be displayed on the independent windows. (2) Hidden auxiliary icon layouts which open automatic unfolding window: All auxiliary icon layouts are collected. After a user clicks clicking the information, the window will automatically rise and become visible. There are three levels in the content guide mode: (1) The rectangular frame: A matrix will render its image from the text. (2) Word list: the text of column presented. (3) Expand the page: thumbnail for each page to do image rendering. Abstract:
Recognizing that the school of architecture should critically position itself in relation to its time and place, adapting its ways of being, teaching and learning (without being self-limited), this dissertation aims to understand how its agents – more specifically the students – can contribute to awakened and restless atmospheres of teaching and learning, never conformed to their existence. This argument acquires special relevance (and pertinence) when analyzed in the eyes of Nu Magazine which, by assuming itself as the study case, makes it possible to decipher what may have been, in part, the contaminations between its agents and the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra – either by synchrony, opposition or, so validly, by complementarity. In this sense, the plots and characters, the editorial, social and necessarily pedagogical evolution of Nu are analyzed and, when crossed with the specificities and paradigms of Department of Architecture, allow to define Nu as a catalyst tool of the intensity of the School, its motivations and its dynamics. The transposition of such premises to other specific context allowed, simultaneously, to assess what they share and what distinguishes apparently distinct realities, determined by their specific contexts, agents and moments of contamination. In conclusion, it is crucial to understand the role of Nu Magazine as an informal learning space, in which student expression and instigation of their individual and collective positions are enhanced – between synergies, affinities and contradictions – and due to being fertile in concerns and questioning, stimulates and allows the construction (of another piece) of the School.
