Abstract:
The text presents the digital activities of the New Bulgarian University (NBU) Center for the Book during the time of pandemic, declared state of emergency and the closure of the university. The publication covers the work of the Publishing House, the Library, the University Archives and the Readers’ Club. In the period of isolation, the NBU Publishing House published new books in various fields and presented them via Facebook due to the impossibility to hold live meetings in the bookstore of the Center. During this period, the NBU Library (which is a combination of traditional and electronic resources and services) supported online learning through remote services. The University Archive presented virtually the personal archives of Prof. Milcho Leviev and Prof. Miroslav Yanakiev. The NBU Readers’ Club maintained its interest in reading by publishing video reviews of books selected before the pandemic, as Arthur Haley’s Airport, Svetlana Aleksievich’s Chernobyl Prayer, and Olga Tokarchuk’s Flights.

Abstract:
The article highlights the history of the faculty therapy clinic of the Emperor Moscow University, i.e. of pre-Soviet MGU. The clinic’s activities are traced at their different stages when they were guided by profs. A.I. Over, G.A. Zakhar’in, P.M. Popov, V.D. Shervinsky, L.E. Golubinin, and N.F. Golubov. Analysis of numerous literature and archival data (including state archives and Shervinsky’s personal archive) provided a deeper insight into the post-Zakhar’in activities, allowed to correct erroneous information contained in some literature publications, and collect additional data for biographies of the leading professors of the clinic with special reference to the contribution made by the Shervinsky-Golubinin scientific and clinical school.Three pinnacles in the course of development of the clinic were distinguished dated to the mid-XIX century (under prof. A.I. Overt), the 1860s-1870s (under the then young reformer G.A.Zakhar’in), and the first decade of the XX century (under profs. V.D. Shervinsky and L.E. Golubinin who created a scientific therapeutic school that greatly promoted the further development of internal medicine in this country).

The text under the code name «A New Writing of the Popular Tatar Scientist and Publicist» was published in 1996 in the companion volume to the collected works of Vasily V. Bartold. The editor suggested that the «popular Tatar scientist and publicist» referred to Ismail Bey Gasprinsky. But Ilya Zaytsev proves that this review has been concerned with «Basics of Sharia» of Musa Bigiyev. Other version of this review has been preserved in the archive of Prof. Ilya Borozdin in Moscow. Probably, Bartold has sent him this paper for publication.

Having given a short essay on the study of epilepsy in general and emphasizing the fact that epilepsy in senile age is not an exceptional phenomenon, as it is commonly thought, the author cites two cases of senile epilepsy that were in the last time he was observed; one case concerned a Jewish woman of 64 years old, and the other - a Jew of 62 years old; in both cases, seizures developed 1-11/2 years prior to observation.

AbstractAstronomy in Prague has long been associated with Charles University, since its founding in 1348. After a long and complicated history, “The State Observatory” was established in the former Jesuit college of Klementinum. The polar height was measured at this location in the last century, during the periods 1889 – 1892, 1895 – 1899 and 1900 – 1904. The observations were made by Gerstner, Laska, Spitaler and others, under the leadership of Prof. Lad. Weinek. The measurements were performed with a transit instrument. The inspection was made in the Archive of Academy of Sciences, where practically all the observations are still preserved.

Abstract:
On the basis of archival documents in the fund of prof. I. Shishmanov highlighted in the article the contribution of Bulgarian scientist I.Shyshmanov to the study of problems related to famous Ukrainian scientist M. Dragomanov’s participation in the edition of the newspaper “Volnoe slovo” in Geneva. In the early twentieth century I. Shyshmanov took part in the discussion between V. Bohucharskyi, who called “Volnoe Slovo” authority of “Sviashchena drujina” and B. Kistyakivskyi, who claimed that the “Zemskyi soyus” was a real organization and showed its position in favor M. Dragomanov. The preparatory work of I. Shishmanov and M. Drahomanov’s family for establishing the truth is analyzed. Attention is drawn to the range of stakeholders and the documents from the Sofia archive of M. Drahomanov that reveal the scientist’s search work. Chronologically, the archival sources cover the period of 1907-1924. As a result, I. Shishmanov published two articles in 1913-1914. For the first time, documents are published, the originals of which are kept in the Scientific Archive of Bulgarian Academy of sciences.

Thesis deal with tuning of database Oracle, which is used by digital archive SAFE. In the concrete deal with setting parameters of database. It is divided to three parts. In first part it characterizes factors that influence performance of database. In second part it describes possibilities of tuning and setting Oracle database. In third part it is first introduced digital archive SAFE, after that it is chosen suitable testing tool for workload generation and described test scenarios and last are performed tests and compared results at different database database settings. Goal of thesis is description and trial tuning of Oracle database, which is used by digital archive SAFE. Other goal is test of files inserting into digital archive at different settings (saving to the database, on file system). These goals are achieved by testing tool workload generation and compare response time at different settings. Contribution of this thesis is above all trial of tuning Oracle database, which is used by digital archive SAFE. Document can be used like handbook for implementatory of tested implementation of digital archive SAFE.

The objectives of this project are to create a concept of system for multimedia documents management and long-term archiving and its realization. The opening chapters are devoted to theoretical analysis of the expected characteristics of this systém and their implementation in open source document management system Alfresco, which was used for implementation. Other chapters are devoted to modifications made to this system, which are enhancements to work with multimedia content and its metadata. Also possibilities of connecting the system to other systems are mentioned. Finally, this document also describes testing the changes and adjustments according to various criteria.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the interpretation of harpsichord sonatas written by Josef Antonín Štěpán / Joseph Anton Steffan (1726–1797), who was an important figure in Viennese musical life of the eighteenth century. His works influenced a large number of his contemporaries, including Joseph Haydn, Jan Křtitel Vaňhal, Leopold Koželuh, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His compositional procedures departed from period conventions: a number of his sonatas and concertos for keyboard instruments begin with a slow introduction to an opening fast movement; he experimented with one-movement forms (sonatas, capriccios); in 1778 he published the very first collection of Germans songs with piano accompaniment in Vienna. The foundation for his music is his detailed knowledge of counterpoint and thoroughbass practice, and he draws on influences from Italian music, Czech folk music, the Gallant style and the Sensitive style. In his late works, he even arrives at a Pre-Romantic style. It is incomprehensible that he has nearly been forgotten in spite of his fame in his own day. In an attachement there is enclosed a critical edition of Steffan´s sonatas, PicŠ. 19–21 issued in ARTA (April 2017). Este estudo pretende, num primeiro momento, identificar as traduções portuguesas do discurso de Cícero Pro Archia , os seus autores e o contexto histórico e cultural em que foram produzidas. As traduções inéditas encontram- -se aqui editadas e as edições impressas com mais de uma edição têm uma edição crítica. Há ainda lugar a uma reflexão sobre as possíveis edições latinas do Pro Archia consultadas pelos tradutores. O segundo momento é dedicado à análise comparativa destas traduções, que assenta quer em aspectos linguísticos e lexicais específicos quer nos processos de tradução de cada texto, relacionando-os com o contexto de produção de cada uma.
First, this study aims at identifying Portuguese translations of Cicero's speech Pro Archia , their authors and the historical and cultural context where they were produced. Unpublished translations are edited in this work and translations published more than once have now a critical edition. I also indicate possible Latin editions of the Pro Archia consulted by Portuguese translators. In the second part of this thesis, there is a comparative analysis of those translations that includes linguistic and lexical items and a study of translation processes of each text interrelating them to the production context of each one.

The subject of the Graduation thesis is the solo and chamber literature found in the archives of Prague. The objective of this work is to map the literature related to double bass in six particular archives. The most important part of this thesis are tables with the results of the research. The found works are listed with signatures for better reader´s orientation and for possible looking up of the material. Different chapters of this thesis inform us the hisory of the relevant archives, explain the research methods and describe the found material.It is in essence a self-contained abstract of double bass literature in the city of Prague which might be used ( not only) by the bass players as a guide while finding a required title. Last but not least, it is to help to extend their horizons in musical history.

"This book is the fruit of "excavations" carried out in memory of Prof. Corrado Corghi between 2004 and 2005. At the time Corghi was a member of the Presiding Council of the Istituto degli Innocenti of Florence. When the meetings of the Council were held, Corghi came down from Reggio Emilia to Florence, and in the evenings he was frequently my guest at dinner. These meetings enabled me to enjoy extensive tracking shots of the past, thanks to the extraordinary lucidity of a man born in 1920 who had devoted most of his life to politics. On the basis of our lengthy discussions I was able to revoke people and events from Fascism to the Resistance, from the times of Democrazia Cristiana to the funerals of the "victims of Reggio Emilia" (1960), through to the Vatican Council and the season of '68. These talks of ours gave rise to singular documents of the life and social history of the Italians. Abstract:
With the recent death of Prof. H. Odera Oruka, founder of the ‘sage philosophy’ school of research based at the University of Nairobi, there is a need to look at some now-problematic issues. I suggest that the original impetus for starting the sage philosophy project-the defense against Euro-American skeptics who thought Africans incapable of philosophizing-has been outgrown. The present need for studies of African sages is to benefit from their wisdom, both in Africa and around the world. I also suggest that the title ‘sage’ has to be problematized. While there were good reasons to focus earlier on rural elders as overlooked wise philosophers, the emphasis now should be on admiring philosophical thought wherever it may be found—in women, youth, and urban Africans as well. In such a way, philosophy will be further relevant to people’s lives, and further light will be shed and shared regarding the lived experience in Africa.

Abstract:
The technology of Computer Aided Design (CAD) has been in use for 3D design for more than 30 years. Still today, the result of the 3D design process is usually a 2D engineering drawing. Thus, many downstream processes in the industry are dependent on engineering drawings. Nowadays, many companies are replacing their engineering drawings with 3D-CAD models and transforming their drawing-based processes into model-based processes. Consequently, these 3D-CAD models have to be archived and new methods to do so have to be implemented. The standardization of the Jupiter Tessellation (JT) file format specification as ISO 14306 could be an opportunity to use a single data format for both purposes: downstream processes and long-term archiving of exact 3D-CAD geometries. This paper describes an approach for long-term archiving of exact 3D-CAD geometries. Initially the state of the art in long-term archiving methodology and archiving systems is analyzed. In order to enable an investigation from a technological point of view, the ISO JT data format is examined subsequently. The formal and technological requirements for a JT-based approach are then derived from these analyses. The next step is to introduce a conceptual process for long-term archiving of exact 3D-CAD geometries with the JT data. As a proof of concept, this approach is implemented prototypically. Through a comparison of the representation of exact 3D-CAD geometries in the JT and STEP data formats, the conditions for responsible long-term archiving using JT are defined. As a conclusion, this paper provides an overview of the advantages and the associated risks of long-term archiving with the ISO JT data format for exact 3D-CAD geometries.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to present the result from a case study comparing a semi-submersible gravity based hybrid structure and a jacket topside structure for two offshore wind farm converter station projects. The cases are analyzed from a transportation and installation perspective. Converter stations enable the conversion from alternating to direct current, more efficiently bringing generated wind energy to shore. Out of the project process phases e.g. planning, engineering, fabrication, transport, installation and commissioning; transportation and installation are two of the most demanding during offshore platform projects. The weight and size of an offshore platform require specialized equipment, vessels and marine contractors’ expertise to be transported and installed. The risks associated with transportation and installation (T&I) operations are related to health, safety and environment, and T&I operations are also sensitive to any disturbance e.g. accidents and delays. Many interdependencies between disciplines in the project execution process may result in consequential and immediate impact, should an activity not follow the plan and thus the risk of cost overruns increases. In an attempt to circumvent risks related to heavy lifts offshore and consequently mitigate the corresponding risks, a new platform concept has been developed a Norwegian EPC–company and a Swiss converter station manufacturer, a semi-submersible gravity based hybrid, SSGBH. The subjects presented in this paper include the general principles of the SSGBH concept and in what way risk associated with T&I operations are reduced. This paper present the platform concepts, data gathered from interviews, archival data and direct observations. Their pros and cons are presented in an objective way, while concluding that platform concepts of this kind are and should be highly customized, as should the concept selection.

Abstract:
Abstract A weather data collection study is currently conducted using a renewable energy training system. The system is composed of a LabVolt trainer, two sun tracking photovoltaic solar panels and a small wind turbine. The LabVolt training system is located in one of the McCoy School of Engineering laboratories, the solar panels and the wind turbine are located in the neighborhood of the Engineering building at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. A set of meteorological data collecting outdoor sensors to monitor the impact of weather conditions on the power generation of the sun-tracking photovoltaic solar panels and the wind turbine have been installed on the building roof. Weather parameters such as atmospheric temperature, pressure, humidity, and rainfall are monitored using a Davis Vantage Pro 2 data collecting system. A number of LabVIEW data acquisition cards and signal processing modules are used to monitor the sun-tracking photovoltaic solar panels’ output voltage, the wind turbine output voltage, the atmospheric temperature, the solar irradiance, and the wind direction, speed, and RPM. A voltage divider has been built to step down the 90V DC voltage produced by the solar panels to 12V DC voltage required for the trainer electrical circuits. A LabVIEW data processing program is used to create instantaneous graphic displays of the collected data on a monitoring screen. The LabVolt trainer is equipped with two charge controller electronic devices, one is used for the sun tracking photovoltaic solar panels, and one is used for the wind turbine. They are used to control the flow of electrical energy through a set of electrical loading devices and a set of storages batteries. Additionally, the LabVolt trainer is equipped with two kilowatt-hour-meters counting the electrical energy consumed by the electrical loads. The trainer is also equipped with two inverters transforming the 12 V DC voltage collected from both energy producing devices to 120 V that can be used by the electrical loading devices. A brief description of all used electronic components and devices is provided in the paper, as well a detailed experiment set-up with a procedure to run them. The project has been divided into three consecutive phases. The first phase dealt with connecting the solar panels, wind turbine, and data collecting sensors to the LabVIEW data acquisition software. The second phase is currently dealing with setting up the trainer solar and wind electricity providing circuits. In the third upcoming phase, it is expected that the data collected by the sensors will be gradually archived using Excel files and analyzed for weather data correlation purposes. It is also expected that the training system will be used to teach upcoming mechanical engineering students about how to set up an independent renewable energy system and the necessary equipment required to run it.

This paper traces the origins of today’s campaigns for school vouchers and other modes of public funding for private education to efforts by Milton Friedman beginning in 1955. It reveals that the endgame of the “school choice” enterprise for libertarians was not then—and is not now--to enhance education for all children; it was a strategy, ultimately, to offload the full cost of schooling onto parents as part of a larger quest to privatize public services and resources. Based on extensive original archival research, this paper shows how Friedman’s case for vouchers to promote “educational freedom” buttressed the case of Southern advocates of the policy of massive resistance to Brown v. Board of Education. His approach—supported by many other Mont Pelerin Society members and leading libertarians of the day --taught white supremacists a more sophisticated, and for more than a decade, court-proof way to preserve Jim Crow. All they had to do was cease overt focus on race and instead deploy a neoliberal language of personal liberty, government failure and the need for market competition in the provision of public education.
