Enterprise integration projects link or merge artifacts across many functions, processes and management levels in a company or government agency. In the absence of methods generic enough to cover the diverse range of enterprise integration projects and adaptable enough to support specific projects effectively, integration services promise to constitute a suitable “middle layer”. Since patterns and reference models could serve as such a middle layer, existing work in the fields of patterns in computer science and reference modeling in information systems engineering is analyzed. In a bottom-up manner, alignment, derivation, binding and merge are proposed as fundamental patterns for enterprise integration. Integration services are identified as integration tasks associated with these base patterns. Such integration services are clustered into enterprise integration patterns that serve as fragments for composing a context and project type specific enterprise integration project. Two case studies illustrate the concept and gain initial validation insights.

This chapter discusses the importance of museum specimens and samples. Natural history collections are archives of biodiversity, snapshots that provide a way to physically retrieve an individual specimen and through it track changes in populations and species across repeatable surveys in time and space. Growing international awareness of the potential effects on humanity due to the loss of biodiversity and the ensuing erosion of ecosystem services has reinforced the value of natural history collections, museums, and herbaria worldwide. The chapter summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of natural history collections for repeated surveys and other historical studies that require replication. Through a case study of the historical surveys and resurveys of the taxonomic exploration of the marine biota of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, it highlights the relevance of collections for ecology and conservation. Finally, it discusses prospects for future uses of natural history collections in the context of replicated research.

Academics and University Extension personnel have experience with soil mapping and providing soil suitability interpretations; however, a more efficient information conveyance to land custodians is desired to support informative land management applications. In the USA each state, in concert with the United States Department of Agriculture, has embarked on developing an online format linking soil survey with ecological site descriptions to provide information for forest and rangeland management to encourage soil protection - health and optimizing ecological services on individual land parcels. In this Missouri-based manuscript, we discuss three cases where soils and their associated ecological site descriptions provide land custodians information concerning their logical reference state vegetation community and detail land management decisions that transform the reference vegetation community to a different vegetation community. With each case, landscapes and their associated vegetations communities are potentially partitioned by soil, physiography, hydrology, and other attributes.

This chapter is a reflection of analyses, experiences and research on the opportunities and challenges of working with faith-based organisations (FBO's) in the context of global health. The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate the important role that FBO's have with state and non-state actors in the development of communities in complex contexts. The role of FBO's in development are demonstrated in reference to the Author's work experience with FBO's, which form case studies in East Africa, and Timor Leste. Further analyses through literature build on these experiences to demonstrate the leading role FBO's can have with state and non-state actors, and the effects on public health. The lack of observations over vast tropical oceans is a major challenge for tropical cyclone research. Satellite observations and model reanalysis data play an important role in filling these gaps. Established in the mid-1980s, the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), as one of the 12 NASA data centers, archives and distributes data from several Earth science disciplines such as precipitation, atmospheric dynamics, atmospheric composition, and hydrology, including well-known NASA satellite missions (e.g., TRMM, GPM) and model assimilation projects (MERRA-2). Acquiring datasets suitable for tropical cyclone research in a large data archive is a challenge for many, especially for those who are not familiar with satellite or model data. Over the years, the GES DISC has developed user-friendly data services. For example, Giovanni is an online visualization and analysis tool, allowing users to visualize and analyze over 2000 satellite- and model-based variables with a Web browser, without downloading data and software. In this chapter, we will describe data and services at the GES DISC with emphasis on tropical cyclone research. We will also present two case studies and discuss future plans.

Another paradigm shift is the overwhelming adoption of service oriented architecture (SOA), which is a simplifying mechanism for effectively designing complex and mission-critical enterprise systems. Incidentally there is a cool convergence between the BI and SOA concepts. This is the stimulating foundation for the influential emergence of service oriented business intelligence (SOBI) paradigm, which is aptly recognized as the next-generation BI method. These improvisations deriving out of technological convergence and cluster calmly pervade to the ever-shining water industry too. That is, the bubbling synergy between service orientation and aquatic intelligence empowers the aquatic ecosystem significantly in extracting actionable insights from distributed and diverse data sources in real time through a host of robust and resilient infrastructures and practices. The realisable inputs and information being drawn from water-related data heap contribute enormously in achieving more with less and to guarantee enhanced safety and security for total human society. Especially as the green movement is taking shape across the globe, there is a definite push from different quarters on water and ecology professionals to contribute their mite immensely and immediately in permanently arresting the ecological degradation. In this chapter, we have set the context by incorporating some case studies that detail how SOA has been a tangible enabler of hydroinformatics. Further down, we have proceeded by explaining how SOA-sponsored integration concepts contribute towards integrating different data for creating unified and synchronized views and to put the solid and stimulating base for quickly deriving incisive and decisive insights in the form of hidden patterns, predictions, trends, associations, tips, etc. from the integrated and composite data. This enables real-time planning of appropriate countermeasures, tactics as well as strategies to put the derived in faster activation and actuation modes. Finally the idea is to close this chapter with an overview of how SOA celebrates in establishing adaptive, on-demand and versatile SOHI platforms. SOA is insisted as the chief technique for developing and deploying agile, adaptive, and on-demand hydrology intelligence platforms as a collection of interoperable, reusable, composable, and granular hydrology and technical services. The final section illustrates the reference architecture for the proposed SOHI platform.
