Abstract:
This research paper is an attempt to analyze the effect of rupee depreciation on total tax col-lection and on types of tax collection. This study employed ARDL methodology on empirical data of Pakistan for the period of 1990 to 2018 and found that depreciation of Pak rupee negatively affects overall tax collection both in short term and long term. Its effect is particularly detrimental in case of income tax and custom duty. In case of income tax it deteriorates tax collection by reducing real income of persons and businesses and in case of customs it reduces tax collection by making imports costly. It is also found that depreciation of currency negatively effects tax collection from agriculture, industry, services and imports whereas it positively effects tax collection from consumption, CPI, remittances and interest rates.

Abstract:
Energy is one of the most important drivers of economic growth, but as the population is increasing, in normal circumstances, in all countries of the world, there is a demand for energy produced from conventional resources. Increasing prices of conventional energy and the negative impact on the environment are two of the main reasons for switching to renewable energy sources (RESs). The aim of the paper is to quantify the impact of the RESs, by type, on the sustainable economic growth at the European Union (EU) level. The research was performed for all 28 EU member states, for a time frame from 2004 to 2017, through a panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach and causality analysis. Furthermore, Hausman test was performed on the regression model. By estimating the panel data regression model with random effects, we reveal through our results that RESs, namely wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, and hydropower energy, have a positive influence on economic growth at EU level. Moreover, biomass has the highest impact on economic growth among all RES. In fact, a 1% increase in biomass primary production would impact the economic growth by 0.15%. Based on econometric analysis, our findings suggest that public policies at the EU level should be focused on investment in RESs.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to investigate China–Africa Investment link, using over two decades of FDI’s data. During the specified periods, African economic growth path has been predominantly upward trending, despite multiple external threats. This impressive growth was partly because of the growth of FDI stock across the region. This study explores the various sources of FDI to Africa, mainly China’s FDI’s and how they influence African macroeconomic indicators, i.e. unemployment, export and import activities.Design/methodology/approachPesaran autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) is used as a framework to test the short-run and long-run relationship of indicators. Granger causality test checked the causality between growth and macroeconomic indicators.FindingsThe link between China’s FDI and African economic growth reported a negative/declining effect in both short and long run. In the long run, the effect of world FDI on growth was significant but not the in the short run. However, US FDI to Africa, China Export and Import from Africa reported an insignificant effect on growth. There was no evidence of Okun’s law, as a decrease in Africa unemployment does not increase growth. Overall, China’s FDI’s inflows to Africa are allocated to capital-intensive activities which has less labor employability. The Granger causality test reported a uni-directional link between growth and all series, except for human capital which experienced no link at all in all directions. Despite the issue of socio-infrastructure militating against growth in the region, African economy is likely to perform better, if more FDI’s are channeled into labor-intensive activities, because it has a reductive effect on unemployment.Research limitations/implicationsThe research considered point annual FDI data but not accumulated stock and is a macro-based study, i.e. regional economy.Practical implicationsThis paper bridged the literature gap in African investment performance by providing an empirical justification in understanding the inflow of FDI, especially China. This is a useful guard in policy design and implementations in the attraction of the right type of investment, so as to reduce unemployment and promote growth.Originality/valueThe authors confirm that this study has not been published elsewhere and is not under consideration in whole or in part by another journal.

Abstract:
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) can bring in much needed capital, particularly in emerging markets, help improve manufacturing and trade sectors, bring in more efficient technologies, increase local production and exports, create jobs and develop local skills, bring about improvements in soft and hard infrastructure and overall be a contributor to sustainable economic growth in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With all these desirable features, it becomes relevant to ascertain the factors which attract FDI to an economy or a group of adjacent economies. This paper explores the determinants of FDI in six Former Soviet Union (FSU): Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Russia, Moldova and Kazakhstan. After an extensive literature review of theories and empirical research and using a set of cross-sectional data over the period 1995–2017, an ARDL model is estimated with FDI/GDP as the dependent variable. Inflation, exchange rate changes, openness, economy size (GDP), Income levels (GNI per capita), Infrastructure (measured by the number of fixed line and mobile subscription per 100 persons) are tested as independent variables for explanatory power in long run and short run relationships. Over the period, higher inflows of FDI in relation to GDP appear to be have been attracted to the markets with better infrastructure, smaller markets and higher income levels, with lower openness, depreciation in the exchange rate and higher income levels though the coefficients of the last three variables are not significant. The results show the type of FDI attracted to investments in this region and are evaluated from theoretical and practical view points. Policy recommendations are made to enhance FDI inflows and further economic development in this region. Such a study of this region has not been made in the past. JEL: C21, F21, F23.

Abstract:
The role of conversational interaction in second language research has increasingly been seen as playing a facilitative role in second language learning. As such there have been a number of studies focussing on different types of interaction, including feedback such as recasts, and their potential role in second language learning. In this study, using Sheen’s (2006) taxonomy, we compare various types of recasts delivered to child ESL learners. Further, we examine two variables: context (teacher-fronted classrooms versus pair work, including NNS-NNS and NNS-NS dyads) and age (the results of this study with children are compared with the results from Sheen’s (2006) study of adults) and the impact these factors have on this form of feedback. We also examine the opportunity for, and the actual uptake that may follow these recasts, for child ESL learners. The findings suggest that age and context make a difference, both in relation to the provision of recasts (in terms of their type and characteristics), as well as in relation to their uptake, though to a lesser extent. Context also influences the opportunity for uptake afforded to child learners. The theoretical and pedagogical implications of these results are outlined at the conclusion of this paper.

The paper introduces into the scientific use a zoomorphic image revealed during the excavation of the kurgan no. 10 of the burial ground Ashutasty-1. The monument was researched by the expedition of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Margulan which was under the guidance of the group of authors in 2015. The materials received due to the analysis of funeral ceremony features, as well as a type of the bronze tip date back to VII-VI centuries BC. Geographically the studied complex is located within the west wing of the vast historical and cultural region Saryarka stretching from Shyngystau in the east to Ulytau in the west. Delineated area coincides with the geographical location of the Tasmola cultural monuments, revealed and introduced by a well-known Kazakh archaeologist M.K. Kadyrbayev. The analyzed image of feline predator Ashutasty-1 have close analogies among the materials obtained during the excavation of the Saka time burials such as Akbeit, Baike-2, Karashoky, Taldy-2. The research works were conducted under the direction of A.Z. Beisenov. Pictorial monuments are known among the antiquities of the synchronous range monuments: Jetysu (Jalauly), Southern Aral area (Tagisken, Uigarak), Kazakh Altay (Tarasu), Southern Ural (Kichigino) and Tuva (Arjan-2, Kosh-Pey, Kuilug-Hem-1).

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the nonlinear dynamics in the effects of oil price shocks on the exchange rate for a sample from the Group of Twenty (G20) over the period 1994:1-2019:1. Design/methodology/approach Using monthly time series data covering the period1994:1-2019:1, the author first use the non-parametric triples test of Randles et al. (1980) to ascertain the existence of asymmetric properties in the sample of exchange rates. Then the author used the nonlinear ARDL cointegration approach developed by Shin et al. (2014) to examine the reaction of these exchange rates to the oil price shocks. Findings This study has identified significant evidence that the exchange rate is asymmetrically distributed, with the effect that high appreciation of the exchange rate is followed by slower depreciation. The NARDL results support such asymmetry even more strongly because in the test the exchange rate is shown to react differently in the long term to positive and negative shocks in oil prices. Another major finding was that the speed of adjustment differed over the sample, as the cumulative dynamic multipliers effect highlighted. Research limitations/implications This change in direction and the employment of non-linear technique can be to obtain better insight into the model specification, which the author believes, will not only enhance the findings in the literature but also enhance forecasting and decision-making. Practical implications A practical implication of this change is the possibility that policymakers and participants concerned with exchange rate stability should intervene in the market to alleviate the unfavourable impact of oil price shocks on the exchange rate. Originality/value Addressing this nonlinear dynamic in the effects of oil price shocks on the exchange rate have at least the following two important reasons: asymmetry and regime change are types of nonlinearities that affect the market dynamics, especially, over marked sample period with such financial crises as the global financial crises of 2007, thereby violating the linear models. Adopting an asymmetric cointegration technique permits to incorporate cointegrated positive and negative components of the considered series.

Despite rising interest in African economies, there is little prior research on the determinants of exchange rate movements in the region. This paper examines the monthly exchange rates of the country members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from 1990 to 2010 inclusive. Long-run equilibrium exchange rate models are established, exchange rate determinants are identified, and ex-post forecasts are generated for a period of 18 months (Sekantsi, 2011). The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration model is used in this paper, given its statistical advantages over commonly, applied cointegration techniques. Findings show that the ARDL method generates accurate forecasts for eight out of 11 sampled exchange rates. In keeping with earlier literature (e.g., Redda & Muzindusti, 2017; Zerihun & Breitenbach, 2017; etc.), findings suggest that the chances of SADC member countries fulfilling the requirements of a currency union are quite low. This paper marks one of the first attempts in the literature to forecast exchange rates in SADC using the ARDL approach (Pesaran & Shin, 1995). The results would be of interest to policy-makers, researchers and investors.

Abstract:
Based on a panel ARDL (AutoRegressive Distributed Lag) model, this paper investigates the environmental and economic consequences of energy tax levied in the four Nordic countries and the G7 countries from 1994 to 2016. Based on the double dividend theory of environmental tax, this paper investigates five variables: energy tax, energy consumption per unit of GDP, income tax, profit tax and capital gains tax, carbon dioxide intensity and fossil fuel burning ratio. A panel ARDL model is established to empirically test the relationship between energy tax and other variables. Experiments show that both the four Nordic countries and the G7 countries have found the existence of green dividends in the long run: the green dividends of the four Nordic countries are reflected in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, while those of the G7 countries are reflected in the reduction of fossil fuel use. In terms of blue dividends, the implementation of energy tax in the four Nordic countries can not only reduce distorted taxes in the short term, but also promote economic growth and adjust tax structure in the long term. For the G7 countries, blue dividends are not reflected in the long term. The model used in this paper is a panel ARDL model, which is more suitable for the study of multiple countries, multiple variables and long-term cycles. This model has been seldomly used in previous studies. The application of the panel ARDL model in this paper is not only more scientific and applicable, but also more innovative, which makes up for the shortcomings of previous studies. The research object of this paper selects the energy tax, which is an important part of the environmental tax system, and strives to provide a reference for the implementation of environmental taxation priorities and effects through empirical research. This paper may also serve as a reference for other countries to establish and improve environmental tax. As the first environmental tax law in China, the Environmental Protection Tax Law of the People’s Republic of China was formally implemented on 1 January 2018. This paper chooses G7 countries and Nordic countries as the research objects. As these are important economies in the world, their environmental tax implementation is more perfected and has strong representativeness. This study can provide some experience for the continuous improvement of China’s environmental tax law.

Purpose – Previous research that investigated the effects of currency depreciation on the trade balance assumed that the adjustment of all variables in a given model is in linear fashion. The authors wonder if introduction of nonlinearity in the adjustment of some variables such as the exchange rate can shed additional light on evidence of the J-curve. The new approach also allows to test whether exchange rate changes have symmetric or asymmetric effects on the trade balance. Estimates of a trade balance model for Canada, China, Japan, and the USA reveal that the effects are indeed asymmetric. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on linear and nonlinear ARDL approach. Findings – When nonlinearity is introduced into testing approach for the J-curve, more evidence is found in support of the J-curve. Research limitations/implications – The models are estimated using aggregate trade flows of each country with the rest of the world, hence they suffer from aggregation bias. Using trade flows at bilateral level and at commodity level are highly recommended for future research. Originality/value – This is the first paper that applies nonlinear ARDL approach to test the short-run and long-run effects of currency depreciation on the trade balance.

Abstract:
The major aim of the study was to examine the short and long-run relationships and directional causality flow between road transport infrastructure development and economic growth in Namibia for the period 1990-2014. To achieve this objective, the study adopted the auto regression distributive lag (ARDL) Bounds testing approach to co-integration, to examine the short-run and long-run relationship between economic growth and transportation infrastructure in Namibia. The data was sourced from the World Bank Database on GDP from 1990 to 2014, the Namibia National Planning Commission MTEF (Medium-Term Expenditure Framework from 1990-2015) and the Roads Authority Annual Reports from 1999 to 2014, which were imported into the E-view tool to run quarterly regressions from 1990 - 2014. The results confirm a relationship among the variables. The Bounds test results indicated that there exists a long-run relationship among the variables under study. The estimated long-run model showed that there is a statistically insignificant positive relationship between expenditure on road transport and economic growth as well as between information communication technology and economic growth in Namibia. However, the short-run model revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between expenditure on road transport and economic growth. Conversely, both the long-run and short-run estimates showed a statistically insignificant and negative relationship between foreign direct investment and economic growth. Lastly, the Granger causality test results showed no causality between expenditure on road transport and economic growth in Namibia. The present study offers fresh insights to policy makers on crafting appropriate policies to regulate tax consolidation revenue and infrastructure levies collection; secondly, to boost public sector borrowing on international capital markets through bond issues, infrastructure funds and revenue bonds; thirdly, to develop partner financing business models through sector budget support; fourthly, to secure private sector financing through a private debt, private equity or capital structure leveraging business model; and lastly, implementing fast-tightened fiscal and monetary policy measures on foreign direct investment which currently severely affect Namibian capital outflows.

The vehicles of tomorrow will be more sophisticated, intelligent and safe than the vehicles of today. The future is leaning towards fully autonomous vehicles. This degree project provides a data driven solution for a speed adaptation system that can be used to compute a vehicle speed for curves, suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. A speed adaptation system for curves aims to compute a vehicle speed suitable for curves that can be used in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or in Autonomous Driving (AD) applications. This degree project was carried out at Volvo Car Corporation. Literature in the field of speed adaptation systems and factors affecting the vehicle speed in curves was reviewed. Naturalistic driving data was both collected by driving and extracted from Volvo's data base and further processed. A novel speed adaptation system for curves was invented, implemented and evaluated. This speed adaptation system is able to compute a vehicle speed suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. Two different artificial neural networks and two mathematical models were used to compute the desired vehicle speed in curves. These methods were compared and evaluated.<br>Morgondagens fordon kommer att vara mer sofistikerade, intelligenta och säkra än dagens fordon. Framtiden lutar mot fullständigt autonoma fordon. Detta examensarbete tillhandahåller en datadriven lösning för ett hastighetsanpassningssystem som kan beräkna ett fordons hastighet i kurvor som är lämpligt för förarens körstil, vägens egenskaper och rådande väder. Ett hastighetsanpassningssystem för kurvor har som mål att beräkna en fordonshastighet för kurvor som kan användas i Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) eller Autonomous Driving (AD) applikationer. Detta examensarbete utfördes på Volvo Car Corporation. Litteratur kring hastighetsanpassningssystem samt faktorer som påverkar ett fordons hastighet i kurvor studerades. Naturalistisk bilkörningsdata samlades genom att köra bil samt extraherades från Volvos databas och bearbetades. Ett nytt hastighetsanpassningssystem uppfanns, implementerades samt utvärderades. Hastighetsanpassningssystemet visade sig vara kapabelt till att beräkna en lämplig fordonshastighet för förarens körstil under rådande väderförhållanden och vägens egenskaper. Två olika artificiella neuronnätverk samt två matematiska modeller användes för att beräkna fordonets hastighet. Dessa metoder jämfördes och utvärderades.

During the Late Middle Ages a unique type of ‘mixed media’ recycled and remnant art arose in houses of religious women in the Low Countries: enclosed gardens. They date from the time of Emperor Charles V and are unique examples of ‘anonymous’ female art, devotion and spirituality. A hortus conclusus (or enclosed garden) represents an ideal, paradisiacal world. Enclosed Gardens are retables, sometimes with painted side panels, the central section filled not only with narrative sculpture, but also with all sorts of trinkets and hand-worked textiles.Adornments include relics, wax medallions, gemstones set in silver, pilgrimage souvenirs, parchment banderoles, flowers made from textiles with silk thread, semi-precious stones, pearls and quilling (a decorative technique using rolled paper). The ensemble is an impressive and one-of-a-kind display and presents as an intoxicating garden. The sixteenth-century horti conclusi of the Mechelen Hospital sisters are recognized Masterpieces and are extremely rare, not alone at a Belgian but even at a global level. They are of international significance as they provide evidence of devotion and spirituality in convent communities in the Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth century. They are an extraordinary tangible expression of a devotional tradition. The highly individual visual language of the enclosed gardens contributes to our understanding of what life was like in cloistered communities. They testify to a cultural identity closely linked with mystical traditions allowing us to enter a lost world very much part of the culture of the Southern Netherlands. This book is the first full survey of the enclosed gardens and is the result of year-long academic research.

The importance of trust in international relations has recently become the subject of a vibrant new agenda of research. However, as this paper shows, trust has always implicitly been at the center of international relations theory. Realism, rationalism and constructivism conceive of trust differently, with enormous substantive implications. After establishing how different understandings about the type and degree of trust that prevail in international relations help structure core debates in the discipline, this paper then turns to showing the role that trust plays in diplomacy and multilateral cooperation. Trust seems necessary for the creation of large multilateral institutions in international relations as well as value-creating diplomacy that allows for win-win outcomes.

Baskerville was a Birmingham inventor, entrepreneur and artist with a worldwide reputation who made eighteenth-century Birmingham a city without typographic equal, by changing the course of type design. Baskerville not only designed one of the world’s most historically important typefaces, he also experimented with casting and setting type, improved the construction of the printing-press, developed a new kind of paper and refined the quality of printing inks. His typographic experiments put him ahead of his time, had an international impact and did much to enhance the printing and publishing industries of his day. Yet despite his importance, fame and influence many aspects of Baskerville’s work and life remain unexplored and his contribution to the arts, industry and technology of the Enlightenment are largely unrecognized. Moreover, recent research in archaeology, art and design, history, literary studies and typography, is leading to a fundamental reassessment of many aspects of Baskerville’s life and impact, including his birthplace, his work, the networks which sustained him and the reception of his printing in Britain and overseas. This interdisciplinary approach provides an original contribution to printing history, eighteenth-century studies and the dissemination of ideas.

AbstractThis paper presents data and analysis from survey research conducted by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Information and Communication Technology Access for Mobile Rehabilitation (mRehab RERC) on the use and unmet needs for mHealth mobile apps by people with disabilities in the United States. Quantitative and qualitative data are reported on user experiences with mHealth apps to map the behavior, interests and needs of people with specific types of disability (physical, cognitive, sensory, emotional/psychological, and speech). Summary results are presented for all respondents and each disability type. Slightly more than half of the participants in this sample (53.2%) reported using mHealth apps. Fitness and exercise apps were the mHealth apps most used by respondents with disabilities, followed by hospital/clinical portal apps. Symptom and disease management apps are the least commonly used, even though these would seem to be important for people with chronic conditions. Text-based responses regarding unmet needs for mHealth apps can be sorted into accessibility needs and functionality needs. In general, respondents with sensory limitations were more likely to identify accessibility needs. However, all disability groups identified both types of unmet needs. These results can help inform research and development efforts to provide mHealth apps that meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Transformer oil and oil-impregnated paper, serve as the essential parts of converter transformer, suffering various electric fields. The accumulation of surface charge on the paper would lead to flashover. When the power flow of the HVDC system is reversed, the charge field will easily lead to discharge. Direct-fluorination is a method which could affect the material property without alternating the bulk property. Besides, a new type of nano-modified transformer oil is a method to improve properties. This chapter presents a study of the effect of fluorination on surface charge behavior, the effect of polarity reversal voltages on interface charge behavior and the effect of Boron nitride (BN) nanoparticles on the high thermal conductivity of transformer oil. Results show that fluorination had an influence on the chemical property of the paper and BN nanoparticles has improvements in heat transfer process. In the polarity reversal test, the dissipation rate becomes smaller as the reversal time gets longer.

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a technology widely applied to water purification and wastewater treatment under ultraviolet (UV) or even sunlight irradiation for the removal of a variety of environmental pollutants into harmless species. Application of membrane for immobilization of semiconductors and their suitability in photocatalytic degradation of dyes have recently been developed. Integration of photocatalysis with membrane processes significantly improve the membrane separation performance with reducing membrane fouling and improving permeate quality. This paper reviews recent progress in the photocatalytic membranes for wastewater treatment and water purification with an emphasis on the type of membranes, membrane fabrication, and applications in pollutant removal.

This paper discusses the outcomes of two data collection methods involving questionnaires distributed to members of an organization. One group received a paper survey through the post whilst the second group was asked to complete the survey on-line. The results indicated that although response rates were higher for the on-line group there were no significant differences in the responses of the two groups. These results suggest that for targeted groups of the type involved in this study, either method can be used with confidence but that the on-line method may result in higher return. However, the additional benefits of speed, convenience and cost make the on-line method appealing.

Medical information produced in hospitals is, simultaneously, used (1) to support health care provided to patients, (2) in research work performed by internal and external health professionals, and (3) as legal proof with various objectives. The co-existence of electronic and paper health information, the integration constraints of the various computer applications, and the storage of massive volumes of retrospective paper-based patient records are dominant concerns for São João Hospital Center (SJHC). These problems must be considered in the adoption of an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) in order to ensure that hospitals and patients fully benefit from the technological investments. The contribution of this chapter is the design and conduction of a (re)use study, which consisted of an analysis of the paper-based records management activities and of the patients’ records content. A survey on the (re)use of the paper-based patient records has been conducted in order to characterize the (re)use in terms of objective and type of hospital encounter, and documents accessed were identified and organized in an access frequency table. The results support the paper-based patient records strategy to implement in SJHC integrated in the Hospital EPR adoption project.

Information systems (IS) researchers have intensively investigated information and communication technology (ICT) adoption. However, very little research has analyzed ICT adoption in the Arab region. This paper aims to review research related to ICT adoption in the Arab world to identify the current state of this research area and provide direction for future research. Fifty articles that addressed ICT adoption in three Arabic countries, namely United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, and Egypt, were found and selected for review. These articles were analyzed based on a research framework that included eight elements: the selected Arabic countries, applied theoretical models, adoption factors, type of adopted ICT, applied research methods, level of adoption, publication year, and quality of publications (i.e. journals ranking). This paper discusses the current trends of ICT adoption research in the Arab region based on the findings of this analysis and provides two main directions for future research: conceptual and theoretical research development and methodological research.

The objective of this effort is to establish the technology required for private sector use of an advanced coal-fueled gas turbine power system. The system is to burn low-cost, utility-grade coal, and yet comfortably meet the EPA New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) for coal-fired steam generators. Plant thermal efficiency is to surpass competing coal-utilization cycles. Development of a successful high pressure slagging combustor is the key to meeting these objectives. As subcontractor to Westinghouse, Avco Research Laboratory/Textron (ARL) has designed and fabricated a subscale slagging combustor based on earlier MHD and boiler-type units. The new device is currently in a 12½-month developmental series of tests. Based on these series of tests, Westinghouse is to design, manufacture, and test a full-scale slagging combustor in a test cell at nominal field operating conditions. The activities described in this paper are sponsored by the Morgantown Energy Technology Center of the Department of Energy.

Under sponsorship of the Morgantown Energy Technology Center of the Department of Energy, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Avco Research Laboratory/Textron (ARL) are developing a direct coal-fired 80-MW combustion turbine. This is to be an element in a 207-MW direct coal-fired combustion turbine combined cycle, comprising another combustion turbine, a heat-recovery steam generator, and a steam turbine. Following conceptual and economic studies, the first experimental task has been to develop a direct coal-fired slagging combustor in small scale. A year’s testing with this unit has now been accomplished. It is thus possible to discuss experimental results in the areas of slag management, general combustor operability, coal fuel feed, heat loss, pressure loss, combustion efficiency, and emissions. Westinghouse and ARL selected the slagging combustor for use in this program because of its unique ability to accept inexpensive standard utility-type coal without sending excessive pollutants and particulates to the expander-turbine. It accomplishes this by burning the coal at a temperature high enough to melt the ash, and then removing the molten slag with an impact separator. This combustor is also of the rich-lean type, which allows it to emit very low levels of NOx. Sulfur oxides are controlled through injection of a sorbent which combines with gaseous forms of sulfur in the rich zone, and then takes them out with the slag. The plan in this program is to develop the slagging combustor in small scale at 12 million Btu/h (12.66 million kJ/h) heat input, 6 atmospheres pressure, and then move to design and verification testing of a full-scale 70 million Btu/h (73.85 million kJ/h), 14-atmosphere unit. It is with the smaller burner that this paper is concerned. During this period, coals have been fed into the 6-atm combustor exclusively in the dry-pulverized form with air as the carrier gas. To date, high- and low-sulfur eastern bituminous, and low-sulfur western subbituminous coals have been evaluated, with, and without sorbents, which have included various calcium and iron containing minerals. Coal samples have been of the 200 mesh size, and have not been beneficiated. Combustor operation has been efficient and repeatable and slag flow has been symmetrical and manageable. Slag removal has been greater than 90 percent and carbon burnout has been greater than 99 percent. Nitrogen oxide emissions meet the goals of EPA’s NSPS for coal-fired plants. Current tests are focused on the goal of 90 percent sulfur removal. Although some results are available, various sorbents and injection techniques continue under test.

This paper deals with an analysis of the flow through a high cambered compressor blade cascade. The profiles of the blade cascade have been designed to be of MCA-type. The geometric and aerodynamic parameters of the cascade are presented here. The aerodynamic research was performed in a transonic wind tunnel. Optical methods were applied to obtain information on the flow structures taking place in the interblade channels when operating in a range of subsonic and transonic velocities and at various angles of incidence. The internal shock waves and the flow separation in the rear part of the cascade channel were observed and studied. Their influence on the loss coefficient and exit flow angle at subsonic and low transonic region was assessed. The thickness of the sidewall boundary layer in the interblade channel was measured in order to investigate the development of the axial velocity density ratio (AVDR), which plays an important role in the interpretation of the results.

Pump sump is an important part of pump station its performance influences the flow condition in the pump and even the total performance of the pumping system. In order to study the flow in an open pump sump the Two-dimension PIV system was used. Flow velocity, flow streamlines, turbulence intensity and vorticity can be obtained from the PIV data. The critical velocities for vortex inception have also been measured in this paper. Analyzing those parameters, the flow performance of the sump with special structure was found then the best condition could be chosen basing on the experiments.

In deinking process, the detachment of ink particles represents a big challenge due to the presence of nano-sized ink particles which can not be separated by conventional means, therefore, it needs special type of treatment to adapt the chemistry of the surrounding solution to control the interfacial forces to separate the ink particle and make their detachment easier. Although studies have been made to correlate chemical structure of fatty alcohol ethoxylates with the efficiency of ink removal, there is still a significant lack of fundamental knowledge regarding the influence of the ethoxylate alcohol on the interaction forces between particulates involved in the deinking process. In this research, fundamental study of the effect of nano-sized ethoxylated alcohol molecules, which exhibits high potential for application in wastepaper deinking, on the ink particle detachment due to changes in the interfacial forces will be studied. In addition, the ability of ethoxylated alcohol to produce nano-size bubbles will be tested in terms of their effect on the ink particle removal. Furthermore, relationship between molecular structure of ethoxylated fatty alcohols (length and ratio of hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts) and ink (toner) will be characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) colloidal probe technique.

China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR), which will be critical in China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) in 2010, is a multipurpose, high neutron flux and tank-type (inverse neutron trap) reactor with compact core. Its nominal reactor power is 60MW and the maximum thermal neutron flux is about 8.0×1014n/cm2·s in heavy water tank. It has a cylindrical core having a diameter of about 450mm and a height of 850mm. The CARR’s core consists of seventeen plate-type standard fuel elements and four follower fuel elements, initially loaded with 10.97 kg of 235U. The fuel element has been designed with U3S2-Al dispersion containing 235U of (19.75±0.20)wt.% low enriched uranium (LEU) and having a density of 4.3gU/cm3. The aluminum alloy is used as the cladding. There are twenty-one and seventeen fuel plates in the standard and follower fuel element, respectively. There are specific requirements for design of the fuel element and strict limitation for the operation parameters due to the high heat flux and high velocity of coolant in CARR. Irradiation test of fuel element had been carried out at fuel element power of 3.1±20%MW at Russia MIR reactor. Average burnup of fuel element is up to 40%. This paper deals with the detailed design of fuel element for CARR, out-pile and in-pile test projects, including selection of fuel and structure material, description of element structure, miniplates and fuel element irradiation experiment, measurement of properties of fuel plate, fabrication of fuel element and test results.

Rutting in flexible pavement is one of the main permanent deformation which appears in most Iraqi roads owing to high temperature and the increase in axial excessive heavy trucks load, these combined conditions cause a major impact on the road performance. The polymers used as additives to improve the properties of asphalt and, that leads to achieve high quality asphalt mixture. This humble research focused on finding the suitable treatment for such issue by using SBS and HDPE. Whereas 5 percent for each polymer was used (2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%) by weight of total mix. A different percentage of polymers were used in order to achieve the best additive percent which was proved to be (8% HDPE, 6% SBS) for wearing (III A) layer and (6% HDPE, 2% SBS) for binder layer. As well as the results showed that using the optimum percent of additives for each layer of asphaltic mixture and test it as one specimen formed from two layers, has decreased the rutting percent by (72%, 65%) for (HDPE, SBS) respectively for each type of additives at (40ºC).

The expressive systems in architecture consists of two components: the system of forms and the system of meanings, these systems are linked together by unwritten rules, which are a matrix of correlations / implications that determine any meanings associated with any forms. The designer remains unsure of the possible interpretations of his design, because of the variation in the nature of meaning, discovered by the recipient, and this stems from the variation of reliance on the theory of interpretation in this regard. Many studies of architectural semiology indicate some of these theories; Classical theory believes in the natural meaning, which influenced by form's geometry, Pragmatic theory believes in the common meaning, which stems from the use of form within different contexts and according to social custom. The research attempts to explore the aspects of interpretation adopted by two critics, in order to determine the theory adopted by them, so the designer will be aware to the nature and type of meaning comprehended by viewers. The results showed the adoption of common and inclusive meanings, also showed the variation in the role of architectural Expressions in confirming or multiplying the meaning, influenced by contexts and signal types. The conclusion emphasized the importance of historical references, stylistic trend, and spatial contexts in form interpretation.

Abstract:
The paper presents the theoretical bases, design and the principle of operation of two-stage precession type transmission with face meshing. Description and the principle of forming the face meshing which is modified by the original method have been shown as well. Dimensional relations between particular components of the gears are established and the analysis of optimal gear ratio, depending on the number of teeth or magnets on the circumferences of meshing gear wheels is also provided in the paper. For further analysis four prototypes of mechanical precession transmission with face meshing were designed, built and investigated. Those prototypes present different sizes, reduction ratio and precession angle. Investigations, described in the paper, helped to determine the gear efficiency rate as well as the maximal torque that could be transferred for the given rotary speed. This paper presents also the conception of the design of a novel double stage precession magnetic gear with face neodymium magnets. The results of the initial studies are the background of the further research in the field of magnetic precession type transmission.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to shed some light on the different considerations for regulation and governance of ride-hailing platforms in emerging markets, highlighting their positive and negative externalities. Building on an extensive review of the literature and secondary sources, we outline Ride-hailing's identified and potential effects on users (providers and consumers), incumbents, and society. Based on the welfare impacts structure, we identify the significant challenges that regulators face in understanding, monitoring, evaluating, and regulating this type of transportation innovation. Finally, the paper proposes a framework for approaching such mobility innovations from governance and regulation perspectives. In a context of exponential growth in research and innovation in urban mobility in general and Ride-hailing, a rigorous review of the literature and a critical framework for understanding governance and regulation in such services in rapidly changing contexts is a timely contribution.

Abstract:
Studies have indicated that emotions can significantly be influenced by environmental factors; these factors can also significantly influence drivers’ emotional state and, accordingly, their driving behavior. Furthermore, as the demand for autonomous vehicles is expected to significantly increase within the next decade, a proper understanding of drivers’/passengers’ emotions, behavior, and preferences will be needed in order to create an acceptable level of trust with humans. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated approach for understanding the effect of environmental factors on drivers’ emotions and behavioral changes through a naturalistic driving study. This setup includes a frontal road and facial camera, a smart watch for tracking physiological measurements, and a Controller Area Network (CAN) serial data logger. The results suggest that the driver’s affect is highly influenced by the type of road and the weather conditions, which have the potential to change driving behaviors. For instance, when the research defines emotional metrics as valence and engagement, results reveal there exist significant differences between human emotion in different weather conditions and road types. Participants’ engagement was higher in rainy and clear weather compared to cloudy weather. More-over, engagement was higher on city streets and highways compared to one-lane roads and two-lane highways.
