Abstract:
As organizations grow and expand past their operational headquarters, individual branches may reflect a different identity than that of the headquarters. The question then is, "Is senior management able to transcend geographical boundaries and communicate the identity that has shaped their strategy for the organization?" The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of geographical expansion on the reflected perceptions of internal stakeholders related to the organization's intended identity as defined by senior management. Through this study, four themes emerged from the data. The themes included a reliance on reputation, a sense of belonging, peer influence, and communication congruence. Based on this data, the study provides a marketing of identity process to assist organizations in communicating their identity throughout the organization and across geographic locations.

Abstract:
Problem Deciding where to spend the information system investment budget with respect to strategic priorities is important for companies, but it is far from every company that does it. There is no consesus in the literature on how information system investment decisions should be assessed. This case study is conducted on Alpha AB. The company consists of several departments that each require different kind of information to support, improve and facilitate their area of operation. They are in the process of deciding where to spend their investment budgets. Purpose The Purpose of this thesis is to identify the processes that will be improved by a new information system and display how it affects the overall goal of Alpha AB, using the strategy map and the balanced scorecard. This will enable decision makers to make better decisions regarding information system investments. Theoretical Framework In order to fulfill the purpose have a review of how information systems improve companies been done, furthermore have investment issues been discussed. In order to display the effects of the intended investment will the strategy map be used, the balanced scorecard will be introduced for performance measurement. Empirical Findings The empirical findings are collected from four high level employees at Alpha AB. Through unstructured and semi-structured interviews have information about the company, its goals, customers, the internal processes and their hopes for the new information system been collected. Analysis The empirical findings have been compiled on the strategy map with the intension to show the causal relationship that the intended investment will have on the company. In order to quantify the targets on which the investment is supposed to cause its effects, have the empirical findings also been compiled on to a balanced scorecard Conclusion The strategy map and the balanced scorecard display the intended effects that the investment causes. The decision makers at Alpha AB can with a holistic view follow the causal relationship from the expectations of the investment and see  which of them will be a priority to invest in.

Ejenstam, Jesper. "The lime industry, a potential business area for Kanthal." Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-122379.

Full text
Abstract:

The subject of this M.Sc. thesis is to find out whether the lime industry is a possible business area for Kanthal AB. The lime industry is one of the biggest chemical industries in the world and it is very energy demanding. In the process of making quicklime, calcium oxide, a lot of energy is needed as the dissociation of limestone, which consists mainly of calcium carbonate, takes place in the temperature span between 900°C and 1300°C. The total production of quicklime was in 2009 about 280 million tonnes, and the selling price was about $100 per ton. Today, all limekilns are driven by fossil fuels, i.e. oil, coal and gas. The increasing demand on lowering the emissions of carbon dioxide strongly affects the industry, as it is responsible for about 2 % of the total emissions of carbon dioxide. The industry itself claims that the emissions may only be reduced about 10 %, although at very high costs. Kanthal AB produces electric heating solutions that may be suitable for lime production. However, the lime industry is conservative and the use of electricity for lime production is not economically feasible today. Most of the electricity comes from coal power plants and therefore the use of electricity would not be more environmentally friendly in most countries. New limekilns, which are more environmentally friendly, are on the way. These kilns do not necessarily have to use fossil fuels, provides a purer end product and the emission of carbon dioxide is minimized. The size of the production is also much lower, but the end products might be used in more demanding areas, e.g. the pharmaceutical industry, and be sold at a higher price. It is this area Kanthal has to focus on if going to enter the lime industry at this point.

Chen, Xiaoshan. "Business and growth cycle analysis for the Euro area." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/35617.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis revisits the issue of business cycle synchronisation in the Euro area by utilising time-series models that may overcome some of the drawbacks in the existing literature. Two major contributions are made to the existing literature of evaluating cycle synchronisation. First, instead of identifying turning points from individual macroeconomic timeseries, as carried out in most studies, this thesis obtains turning points from multivariate information. It is hoped that including more variables containing business cycle information in the dating process may produce more accurate turning points and, in turn, improve the accuracy of measuring cycle correlation. In doing so, both parametric and non-parametric business cycle dating procedures are used. These include the quarterly Bry-Boschan (BBQ) algorithm, a single dynamic factor model and the Markov switching dynamic factor model. Second, unlike the traditional approach that measures growth cycle synchronisation in the euro area by calculating pairwise cycle correlations, this thesis analyses the degree of growth cycle co-movement within a multivariate setting by using a VAR model with cointegration.

Abstract:
Ingeniero Civil Industrial

Abstract:
Based on the limited outcomes and often failed implementation processes of annual employee surveys a new phenomenon for collecting people data has risen; the pulsed employee survey. This survey and its continuous way of measuring are by many providers and consultants stated to be an important tool that increases employee engagement. The phenomenon of the pulsed employee survey has so far received limited academic attention, despite its growing importance as a potential institutionalized practice. Therefore, this study aims at broadening the understanding of the phenomenon of the pulsed employee survey. How is it transformed into organizations during an implementation process and can the process be seen as coupled or decoupled from the institutionalized practice? Further, what explains the potential coupling or decoupling? To investigate this, a model based on decoupling theories by Bromley & Powell(2012) has been used through a qualitative case study. The result shows that, even though the surveys are implemented into the organizations, means-ends decoupling can be found, whichmay be explained by the complexity of what is measured as well as the multifaceted expectations and perceptions at different organizational levels.

Gabel, Sharon. "Future Work| Denver Metropolitan Area Jobs in a Globalizing Economy." Thesis, University of Denver, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3641984.

Full text
Abstract:

In the past twenty years, globalization has had both observable and intangible impacts on business and labor markets at the local level, that are of critical importance to communities and the people who inhabit them. While impacts of global economic change on local labor markets have been anticipated, there is little insight in the research literature into the empirical dynamics of the interrelationship between global economic change and local labor markets. This study examined the impacts of globalization on local labor markets through three lenses: (1) quantitative analysis of employment change in the Denver Metropolitan Region local labor market, (2) quantitative comparison of six other metropolitan regional labor markets across different geographies, and (3) a qualitative analysis of explicit reports by participants in the Denver Metropolitan local labor market (people in business, consulting, the public sector, and education). The main hypothesis of this study is that, in metropolitan areas where the forces of global economic change are at work, two proxy measures for globalization, foreign direct investment (FDI) and export trade, have a statistically significant relationship to changes in industry employment in local labor markets. Quantitative analysis used multiple regression to identify correlation between industry employment and FDI and export trade. Results indicate that there is a correlation in selected industries where the geographic factors of location provided an explanatory basis for the results. Qualitative analysis revealed that respondents have cautious optimism regarding the economic promise of globalization and still acknowledge the challenges that globalization brings into focus for the region's business, education and government stakeholders. It also demonstrated the differences in perspectives of the respondents from different roles: business owner, enterprise employee, educator, and government official. The study concludes that the data support the hypothesis in select industries where there are geographic advantages, but they do not support the generalization of the hypothesis to all cases where FDI or international export trade affect industry employment. The study further finds that each of the metros examined have unique regional economic development entities that partner to attract FDI and encourage international export trade.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration (Entrepreneurship)))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2015.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of business incubators on survivalist entrepreneurs in the Cape Metropolitan Area. The question that guides this research is: What is the impact of business incubators on survivalist entrepreneurs in the Cape Town Metropolitan Area? This study was conducted in the context of economic growth and development, considering addressing the following problems: small business failure and the unemployment rate in South Africa. Although entrepreneurship is of greater importance to the growth and development of an economy, not all entrepreneurs are presented with the same opportunities and resources as others. As opposed to formal businesses, informal small businesses are normally discriminated against in terms of support, which is offered to them to necessitate their growth. The contribution that they make towards economic growth and development is often seen as insignificant. They lack opportunities that are enjoyed by large businesses and they suffer from discriminating policies, which has resulted in suppressed growth of these business ventures.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-profit health agencies are examined from three perspectives: their contribution to medical research by region and subject area; changes in their revenue sources and fund-raising techniques between 1982 and 1987; and, correlates of fund-raising effectiveness. Data are obtained from a survey of 1,103 health charities and foundations, interviews with the executive directors of six hospital foundations across Canada and statistics in the public domain. Results indicate that in comparison with the distribution of Federal government research grants, health agency research funding is more highly concentrated in one province, Ontario, and two subject areas, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Agencies appear to be obtaining larger proportions of their total funding from donations or business activities and smaller proportions from government grants or transfers. Large-established agencies are shifting fund-raising resources from canvassing to direct mail. Two variables, public awareness of the agency and the proportion of agency funds derived from donations, appear to be important correlates of agency effectiveness as measured by donations per fund-raising dollar. Small, positive correlations are noted between two indicators of a marketing approach and fund-raising outcome. Implications for future research are discussed.

Jonsson, Emma, and Linda Samuelsson. "Business Valuation : Valuation of IT-companies in the area of Jönköping." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Business Administration, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1322.

Full text
Abstract:

Background:

In Sweden Internet was introduced in 1983 and IT became a popular phe-nomenon in the 1990s. In the middle of this decade IT-companies had a prosperous period. Many companies acquired competitors frequently dur-ing these years in order to build brand names and stay competitive. More than 400 IT-companies went bankrupt during 2001, due to the burst of the IT-bubble. Today, there is no doubt that IT-companies are willing to acquire other companies in the industry. Before an acquisition both the purchaser and seller do a careful valuation of the current company, using different valuation methods. Lately, there are some IT-companies in the area of Jönköping and its surroundings that have carried out acquisitions.

Purpose:

In this thesis IT-companies in the area of Jönköping are considered in or-der to describe what valuation methods that are used when valuing these before an acquisition. Intangible assets are of great importance for this in-dustry. Therefore the aim is also to find out which these are and how they are valued.

Method:

In order to fulfill the purpose a qualitative research is maintained. Primary data is collected from two telephone interviews and six face-to-face inter-views. Three of the interviews are conducted with people working at IT-companies that have carried out an acquisition between 2006 and 2008. The other interviews were performed with people working with business valuation on a daily basis.

Conclusion:

When valuing IT-companies as well as the intangible assets, where good-will is significant due to synergies, the net present value approach is most commonly used. The relative valuation approach is also useful, especially for companies in the early phase of the life cycle since these do not show any historical facts. Within the IT-industry; P/S, P/E, and value per em-ployee, are all useful. The net asset value approach is the most common before a direct acquisition. In this research indirect acquisitions are most often applied.

Bakgrund:

I denna studie är indirekta förvärv oftast förekommande.

Johansson, Elin, Vanessa Julianose, and Lisa Winroth. "Sustainable Chic : A cross-cultural study on Millennials' perception of sustainability and intended buying behaviour in the fast fashion industry." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för marknadsföring (MF), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-65081.

Full text
Abstract:
Globalisation has led to a rising need for sustainable efforts, not least in the fast fashion industry which is associated with unsustainable procedures in order to meet consumers’ needs and desires. In the fast fashion industry, collections of ecological fabrics, fair working conditions as well as higher quality are examples of sustainable actions. Additionally, the increasingly globalised world has created a demand to comprehend how the deeply rooted national culture affects consumers in the international fast fashion industry. The main target segment of the fast fashion industry is the Millennial generation and should thereby be further emphasised. The relevance of these topics led to the formulation of following research question: How does national culture affect Millennials’ perception of sustainability and intended buying behaviour in the fast fashion industry? The literature review introduces the five identified themes which are considered relevant in relation to the area of research; the Millennials, sustainability, fast fashion, sustainable consumer behaviour and culture. To finalise the literature review, a conceptual framework is presented which explains the connection between the themes. Furthermore, the thesis adopts a qualitative research method with an abductive approach. Therefore, four cross-cultural focus groups of 28 Millennials with seven different nationalities are conducted. This method is considered the most suitable for this thesis’ research area and purpose. Further, the empirical findings and the analysis are combined into one chapter which creates a discussion between the literature review, especially Hofstede’s dimensions of national culture, and the gathered data. Finally, the conclusion includes the answer to the research question, theoretical and practical implications, limitations and suggestions for further research. The results of this thesis indicate that national culture affects the perception of sustainability and the intended buying behaviour in the fast fashion industry in a complex manner, since the impact of national culture depends on the combination of dimensions. Furthermore, certain dimensions appear to be more dominant and decrease the impact of others.

Kroukamp, Thelma. "Facilitating banking finance access for BBBEE firms in the Southern Cape area." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/996.

Full text
Abstract:
Studies have shown that BBBEE parties are unsuccessful in raising banking finance due to a number of reasons. The objective of the enactment of the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act is primarily to promote the participation of black people in the economy. The measurement of BBBEE is determined by the codes of good practice for Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSE), which consists of seven elements namely: ownership, management control, employment equity, skills development, preferential procurement, enterprise development and socio-economic development. Enterprises with annual turnover ranging from R5 million and R35 million qualify as QSE. These elements measure the level of BBBEE status. The enactment of the National Credit Act replaced the Usury Act, 1968 and the Credit Agreements Act, 1980. The objective of the act is to promote accessibility to the credit market and to prevent the over-indebtedness of consumers. The Act is applicable to natural persons with contractual capacity and juristic persons with monetary assets or annual turnover of less than R1 million. This study aims to establish the facilitation of access to banking finance for BBBEE SME’S within the George and Mossel Bay area as these towns form part of the Garden Route Business Banking Division of Nedbank. The effect of the BBBEE and NCA on the accessing of banking finance was studied and analysed. Credit applications are subject to stringent credit scoring systems to rate applicants, monitor performance and manage accounts. The Basel rating which measures the minimum level of capital a bank should hold to protect investors determines the interest rate charged for loans. These ratings affect the accessibility of banking finance. A framework for bank and SME relationship building shows the relationships between: • The accounts manager’s role in relationship management; • Branch staff role in relationship management; • Corporate policies as part of relationship management. A survey was conducted in the form of a questionnaire in order to obtain primary information from two sample groups, banking officials and BBBEE clients to establish the relationship between the two sample groups. Quantitative techniques were used and the data obtained from the two sample groups were analysed. The study revealed that the by establishment of relationships between BBBEE clients and banking officials would facilitate access to banking.

Abstract:
The fierce competition on the retail market has led firms to stop focusing on firm-customer transactions and start focusing on firm-customer relations. New customer demands makes it impossible for firms to gain a sustainable advantage by focusing only on their goods assortment. This forces retailers to consider the customer experience and differentiate themselves by how they offer what they offer. This have led to that many retail companies try to shape the behaviours and emotional displays of their frontline employees in encounters with customers. Many firms define customer service concepts as an attempt to create high quality customer experiences. However, a successful realisation of these concepts can be challenging.   Service-Dominant Logic researchers argue that firms cannot single headedly create value but that it is co-created in the interaction with customers. Therefore, they can only create value propositions, which is a proposal for value co-creation based on an integration of products and services. Services marketing researchers emphasise the importance of internal marketing for enabling frontline employees to represent the firm in the interactive value-creating process with the customer. Prior research focuses on the customer-driven development of value propositions, and techniques to conduct internal marketing, but does not provide relevant theories about the realisation of value propositions or the implementation of these internal marketing techniques. This thesis conceptualise the human factor of the realisation of the value proposition with the concept of intended and enacted value propositions. The purpose was to develop a deeper understanding of how internal marketing can be used to manage the gaps between intended and enacted retail value propositions. This was addressed by investigating one of Sweden’s largest retail companies on commission. Since the company has requested to remain confidential, it will be called Anonymous Commission Company (ACC) in this thesis. The current study has answered the following research question: “How can the gaps between intended and enacted retail value propositions be managed through internal marketing?”   The research question was answered through a qualitative study and in-depth interviews with both CS concept managers and frontline employees. The intended value proposition was investigated by a combination of ACC documents related to the CS concept, and interviews with the CS concept managers. By interviewing the frontline employees, their perceptions and enactment of the value proposition was investigated, as well as how they experience the current internal operations at ACC. The findings confirmed the proposed concept of intended and enacted value propositions, and four main barriers causing the gaps between them were identified through a thematic network analysis. Internal marketing theories were used to analyse how retail companies can overcome these barriers by engaging, enabling, empowering and ensuring their frontline employees. The thesis offer implications for retail managers on how they can manage the gaps between intended and the enacted value propositions. The study contributes to prior research by combining value proposition theories and internal marketing theories, and by offering detailed recommendations for retail firms. Furthermore, the study enriches the practical implications regarding retail value propositions and retail value proposition realisation.

Abstract:
Supplying users with literature by a seamless linking of media is the goal of (scientific) libraries. By the digitization of primary and secondary data and the convergence of products and providers, libraries have already come very close to achieving this ideal. A digital library is the realization of this goal. However, many librarians are in danger of running out of imagination. What will come after the digital library? Do we still need information professionals today? And, above all, what services are required? This paper identifies new fields of business for libraries with the example of bibliometric analysis. The discussion concerns the shape this service could take in practice, who needs it and what target groups exist in the scientific environment. Concrete examples of bibliometric analysis from the Central Library of Research Centre Jülich, the largest interdisciplinary research institution in Europe, round off the overview.

Abstract:
Many small real estate business leaders lack effective strategies to resume and sustain operations in a postnatural-disaster environment. This multiple case study investigated strategies that 3 small real estate business leaders in southeastern Louisiana used to resume and sustain operations in the aftermath of a natural disaster. The chaos theory and stakeholder theory were the conceptual frameworks for this study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, and reviews of business continuity plan documents and member checking. The themes that emerged from data analysis were leaders' strategies relating to business planning and innovation, stakeholder engagement, operations management, and disaster responsiveness. Implications of the findings of this study for social change include identification of effective strategies for increasing the sustainability of small businesses in the real estate industry through implementation of proven business continuity strategies that might help keep communities intact, reestablish commerce, and contribute to regional economic sustainability in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Abstract   Background:           Although the area of Gnosjö, Gislaved and Värnamo (GGV) have many companies it still lacks of highly educated people. The three municipalities are underrepresented of highly educated employees in relation to population, thus being able to attract and keep employees are a crucial part for the survival of the companies. The new younger generation, generation Y, is different from previous generations as they demand more from their employer and change jobs more frequently than previous generations thus the employer branding and internal marketing strategies must be improved.   Purpose:       The purpose of this study is to understand how different companies in the area of  Gislaved, Värnamo and Gnosjö can attract and retain highly educated employees.   Method:        The study was made with a qualitative method, through in-depth interviews with the HR-managers of the companies chosen. A judgmental sampling technique was used with the criteria’s of manufacturing companies, 35 number of employees, 300 million SEK in turnover and located in the area of GGV. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded.   Conclusion: Concluding, the majority of the companies are lacking highly educated employees. The results show that companies are to some extend using strategies for attracting and retaining employees. The participants were asked about employees, employer branding strategies and internal marketing activities. However the strategies are not grounded in how the employees want it, nor in previous research. The companies could use several more strategies and in a more structural way.

Full text
Abstract:
Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) play an important role as employers and in the economic growth of South Africa and in Africa as a whole. SMEs comprise over 90 percent of African business operations and contribute to over percent of African employment and GDP. SMEs sector has shown positive signs in South Africa, Mauritius and North Africa. SMEs constitute 95 percent of formal manufacturing activity in Nigeria. Senegal and Kenya have provided an environment which is conducive for SMEs (African Development Bank 2005). In August 2006, flood damage to small businesses and residential premises in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Area was estimated at R120million (SABC News 2006). The holding of an insurance cover by SMEs is crucial and beneficial to the economy and to the survival and success of the Small and Medium Enterprise sector. If a business has an insurance policy and a relationship with its insurer it becomes easier for the company to over come such a catastrophe. However, literature has shown that insurance companies are not willing to insure SMEs and it is the aim of this research to establish whether a relationship between the two constructs exists. An article entitled New Deal In The Offering for SMMEs, the author stated that the insurance industry prefer to deal only with established businesses (Mthimkhulu 2008). The aim of this research is to establish the importance of business relationship between Insurance companies and SMEs. The research will show how beneficial such a relationship is to both industries. The data for the research was collected through a survey type structured questionnaire that was developed and validated. The questionnaire was administered to the owners or managers of SMEs in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Area. The primary objective of this research was to establish whether SMEs in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Area have insurance policies for their businesses, and the results have shown that most of the SMEs in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Area do not have insurance policies for their businesses.

Abstract:

The rising demand for suitable housing for low- and middle-income Saudi residents in the Jeddah, Saudi Arabia metropolitan area exceeds the supply. This study explored the possibilities and obstacles facing private sector real estate developers in the development of suitable housing in the Jeddah metropolitan area. The study identified and described developers’ perspectives relative to supply and demand trends, obstacles that inhibited the development of suitable housing, incentives that might help build suitable housing, and possible long-term solutions to address the ongoing mismatch between supply and demand. The study employed a qualitative case study design, and the case was private sector real estate development in Jeddah. The researcher conducted semi structured, open-ended interviews with 16 private sector, residential real estate developers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Case study findings revealed four major obstacles: bureaucratic frustrations with the Ministry of Housing and the Municipality of Jeddah; lack of financing options for potential homeowners and private sector developers; lack of land with the necessary infrastructure to create communities; and potential homeowners’ culture-based desire, or housing norm, for large, expensive villas. Future research could investigate the efficacy of the solutions recommended by the study’s participants; how other nations’ housing solutions could be adapted to the Saudi context; and best practices for integrating the study’s findings, conclusions, and recommendations with the Kingdom’s National Transformation Program 2020 and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 .

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. (Business Administration)) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2014
This exploratory study seeks to contribute to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the transition of small businesses from the informal to the formal sector. It builds on the role of the informal sector as “engines” for economic and socio-cultural development. Using selected businesses in the Mangaung area of the Free State province as case studies, this study investigates the motives for transition of informal businesses to the formal sector in South Africa, challenges encountered in the process of formalisation and the coping strategies relied upon to deal with challenges encountered in the process of formalisation. Key indicators were identified from the literature and were further developed for investigation. A qualitative approach was used for the collection of data from selected transited businesses in the Bloemfontein area using semi-structured interviews. Findings from the study suggest that the decision by small business owners to formalise is motivated by their desire to grow and expand their businesses; access to proper banking services; and to access government contracts and tenders. The results also reveal that the quest for growth is however hindered by long queues endured by business applicants during the process of formalisation; lack of adequate and relevant information on the process of formalisation; coupled with the lack of government support for informal businesses’ transitioning to the formal sector. Findings further revealed that adequate information on the process of formalisation and self-trust are key coping mechanisms needed by small business owners to successfully progress/ transit to the formal sector. Based on these findings, the study recommends that government both provincial and national play a more proactive role in regulating the informal economy by creating an environment conducive for their growth and development, and facilitating their transition to the formal sector. Informal small business owners also must be provided with information on the process of formalisation and of the existing government structures put in place to support businesses in their transition phase.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in the fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Office Management and Technology In the Faculty of Business At the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
In the past Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) used to be confined to a particular geographical location to conduct their business. This is no longer the case especially since the introduction of the internet. The World Wide Web (Web) now offers SMMEs an opportunity to market, communicate, advertise, purchase and sell goods and services online 7 days a week, 24 hours a day around the globe. However, doing business online is not without risk, as companies also have to ensure that they have adequate security measures in place. SMMEs need to be kept updated on security threats that keep on emerging. They need to keep their information secure in order to avoid unnecessary losses. The advances in modern technology, especially with computers that are connected to the internet have resulted in SMMEs being exposed to cyber-attacks. In most cases, these companies do not have the financial muscle to effectively address such data breaches. Even though cyber-attacks are on the rise, hospitality SMMEs still leave themselves vulnerable to these attacks. Data breaches can be a result of both internal and external attacks. Research indicates that internal attacks are not easy to detect thus making them more deadly than external attacks. It is therefore, important for SMME to come up with policies that will curb inside attacks. However, information security policies are not common amongst hospitality SMMEs. SMMEs are not always aware of the risks that they are exposed to even though their customers expect them to keep information secure whenever they conduct online business. Most of the hospitality SMMEs are expected to provide online bookings. Credit cards are commonly used in this instance and if the information is not kept secure, companies may face lawsuits from customers. Even though the majority of the hospitality SMMEs indicate that they keep credit card data secure, there are still cases where some do not ensure secure transactions whenever credit card information is exchanged. Vulnerability assessment in order to check if there are any loopholes in networks is rarely carried out by SMMEs. These companies hire IT experts on a temporary basis; further exposing themselves as they there is no one to monitor their networks on a daily basis. In most cases SMMEs believe that technology is their answer to security problems. They omit the human aspect of security. Even though SMMEs indicate that data loss is one of the challenges they are facing, they still fail to put measures in place to address this. This research examines measures and policies implemented by hospitality SMMEs in their quest to address data security breaches. Only hospitality SMEs that are connected to the internet are used in this research.

Full text
Abstract:
When the Government of National Unity (GNU) came to power in South Africa in 1994, it inherited a housing sector with severe abnormalities as a result of the policies and political turbulence of the apartheid era (Department of Housing/DOH, 2000a). One of the main problems was and is still the enormous housing backlog facing large sections of the country's population both in rural and urban areas. The housing crisis in South Africa has received extensive attention by the South African government, non-profit organizations and international actors such as research and aid organisations since the demise of apartheid. This shows the historical and present interest on the SUbject. The most significant development in housing policy in 1990 was the creation of the Independent Development Trust (lOT). The lOT, was a parastatal, a government created institution in 1991, which was to address the housing needs of the country's poor. As one form of housing subsidisation, housing consolidation subsidies have been used in housing projects for households to build new houses or improve existing structures on the serviced sites that were previously subsidized through the Independent Development Trust (lOT) in the 1990's. The realisation that between 20%-30% of beneficiaries do not take occupancy at the end of a specific project, has brought a serious concern to the Housing Department, local community structures and Project Managers. This study, focuses on the Durban Metropolitan Area; it intend to increase one's understanding of why consolidation housing projects only reach 70%-80% of intended beneficiaries on closure of the projects. The housing consolidation projects in Luganda and Savannah Park, Southern Pinetown, Durban, which are the sUbject of the present stUdy, were initiated in 1996 and 2000 respectively with the intent to deliver over 2000 houses in both study areas. These are being investigated. The study takes a form of a wholes tick approach and tries to make a link between the absent beneficiaries and those who informally transfer their property to new owners. The reason is simply that the 20-30% originally intended beneficiaries are not benefiting from the Consolidation Housing Subsidy. The study aims to look at alternative, cheaper and affordable ways of obtaining title deeds for people who have bought sites informally from the authentic officially recognised beneficiaries. Lastly, the study will contribute by data gathering and analysis, to the understanding of the phenomenon of low-occupancy and informal or de facto transfer of property.

To improve the competence of traditional business areas, since 1995, the MOEA had gradually budgeted to renew and reconstruct the business areas year by year. How about the actual achievement for the consulting efforts made by MOEA? It is worthy of our further investigation. The actual consulting achievement can be evaluated in view of efficiency and performance. However, the duration of consulting effort made by MOEA is still too long to substantially evaluate the achievement. Thus, through the satisfaction degrees for vendors and customers in response to the consulting efforts, we can evaluate the real achievement and also investigate the factors possibly influencing the real performance. Thus, we can offer the suggestions to improve the performance and achievement for consulting efforts made MOEA. Within this research, we put our aiming efforts onto the dimensions of interview questionnaires for the consulting efforts made for the Wang-Kung Business Area Plan with 4 goals included. Also, we focus on the said 4 goals to create the major questionnaire contents and separately interview vendors and customers of business areas. As for the part of vendor interview, we have made the overall visiting interview. As for the customer part, we focus on the customers who used to visit the Wang-Kung Business Area to act as the experimental subjects for this research. We have made 300 subjects for sampling research. The higher expectation for vendors and customers in request for the consulting efforts also means the higher demands. The ones with lower expectation mean lower demands in consulting efforts. The difference between expectation and actual sense means the performance satisfaction of both vendors and customers so that we can understand whether the consulting efforts can meet the actual demands and the real achievement of the relevant consulting plan. We conclude as below: 1. The performance for renewal and reconstruction of business area is not as good as we suppose. 2. The consulting service items with least satisfaction answered by vendors and customers are separately ”The Eye-catching Labels Leading to Wang-Kung and Adjacent Scenic Spots” and “The Improvement for Store Environment Hygiene” for inferior execution performance. The items with mediocre satisfaction for plan execution performance answered by vendors and customers are separately “The Art Object Made by Oyster Shells Is Worthy for Sales Promotion!” and “The Activity Arrangement & Explanation for Oyster Farming Ecology Visit”. 3. The real sense for vendors feel about the “Promotion Activities” and “Ecology Experience Visit” will positively influence the overall performance satisfaction. The “Product Innovation” and “Business Opportunity Improvement” expected by vendors will negatively influence the overall performance satisfaction. 4. The real sense for customers feel about the “Touring Information” and “Product Features” will positively influence the overall performance satisfaction. The “Touring Information” expected by customers will negatively influence the overall performance satisfaction. Key Word: Renewal and Reconstruction of Business Area

A business-to-consumer (B2C) Web site not only provides information about products and services but also acts as platform of online transactions. Whether the excellence of Web qualities, such as aesthetics of Web appearance, completeness of Web content, sufficiency of function, technical adequacy, and so forth, can meet the demand of users will affect users’ perception of a Web site, and will be the crucial factor for the users to assess if the Web retailer is trustworthy and the Web site is useful and then to influence their intention to use the Web site. It is assumed that when an experienced online shopper is satisfied with the products and/or services provided by a Web site and is familiar with the usage of the Web site, he or she may form a habit of using the Web site and unwilling to switch to another. This study will attempt to combine two diverse viewpoints of consumer’s rational assessments, usefulness and trust, and non-rational assessment, habit, on choosing a B2C Web site, and to conduct an empirical analysis to understand which factors will affect the consumer’s intended use of a B2C Web site. Furthermore, by taking Web quality and habit as external variables, their effects on trust and perceived usefulness will be explored. Data were obtained through survey. A total of 344 useful responses were retrieved. The study used structural equation modeling to analyze the samples. The findings of this paper are as follows: 1. Perceived usefulness, trust, and habit have positively effect on the intended use of a B2C Web site. 2. Habit has positively effect on perceived usefulness and trust and it indirectly impacts the intended use of a B2C Web site. Furthermore, trust also has positively effect on perceived usefulness. 3. Of the four dimensions of Web quality, content quality, specific content, and technical adequacy have positively effect on trust, but only technical adequacy has positively effect on perceived usefulness. 4. For experienced online shoppers, habit, the non-rational factor, affects behavioral intention more than trust and perceived usefulness, the rational factors, do.

This study explores whether the turnover tax system (TTS) fulfils its intended function of being a simplified tax system, using primary and secondary data. Structural-functionalism and the tax canons form the theoretical foundations for this study and are used to guide the questionnaire design, data collection process, identification of the overarching themes and the data analysis. Semi-structured interviews are utilised to solicit information from the selected participants, using convenience and snowball selection techniques. The participants believe that the TTS is not functioning as a fully simplified tax system, as not all the tax canons and structural functionalism principles of an effective tax system are being met. The concept of the TTS is perceived as good, although the administration thereof and the South African Revenue Service officials’ knowledge on the TTS are seen to be inadequate. Various recommendations are provided to improve the TTS.

Nowadays every mid-to-large size company uses an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that collects information about the state of all di erent divisions of the enterprise and stores this information, making it available to be used by every department of the company. The data stored is very valuable to a company and properly analyzed it can help companies take better business actions. The current Business Intelligence solutions work great when analyzing data from a single source, but struggle to collect data from di erent sources. The objective of this dissertation is to create a Business Intelligence solution, focused in the nancial and economic eld, that can extract data from all the di erent ERPs that currently exist and store that information in a Data Warehouse, making it available to further processing and analyzing. This project was proposed by a portuguese company, Satbyte, and it was done in a business environment in collaboration with it to develop a new marketable product for the company. This document contains the proposed solution to the problem and a implementation of it. That consisted in the creation of a Data Warehouse to store the data in an integrated way, coming from several ERPs and the development, in web environment, of several use cases from the economic and nancial analysis eld. The developed solution proved to be e ective for the purpose initially formulated and was validated by the company as having a crucial role for the continuation of the development of the extended Business Intelligence solution in which they intend to continue to invest.

As a result of increased income per capita, recreational time and demand for business travels, local tourism industries flourish, and hotels have assumed a significant role in the modern economic system and the recreation infustry.
