Atualmente a Mata Atlântica é um dos biomas mais fragmentados. O objetivo deste estudo foi diagnosticar a fragilidade ambiental da Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) Alto Rio Doce em Minas Gerais, por meio da caracterização da distribuição da fragmentação local, bem como da pressão sobre a vegetação. A caracterização da vegetação foi feita por classificação supervisionada, por meio da imagem captada pelo sensor OLI presente no Landsat 8. Abstract:
This chapter presents the studies conducted to retrofit an existing bridge in a seismic prone area of Mexico. The Motín de Oro II Bridge was built in the 1970s with a continuous box girder superstructure and wall-type substructure. From the 1970s to nowadays, the design truck loads in Mexico have been substantially incremented and many bridges built in that period have required to be evaluated and, in some cases, rehabilitated and retrofitted. Firstly, the study presents the results of visual inspections of all parts of the bridge and a description of the preliminary studies conducted to determine the material properties, to evaluate the river flow characteristics and to calculate the scour depth. Secondly, the chapter discusses the initial structural analyses of the bridge subjected to the original gravitational and seismic loads and to the current loads before the intervention. These analyses allow to select the structural elements that require to be retrofitted and the best strategy to follow. Finally, the study presents results of the numerical retrofitted model and the experimental assessment of the dynamic properties based on ambient vibration measurements. Additionally, the scour protection and the general construction procedure are also described.

Developed societies are registering a dramatic change in terms of population evolution, the most important fact being the ageing population. An alarming fact is that the birth-rate is dropping very fast, inverting the ageing pyramid that used to have a higher incidence on the young population, now having a higher incidence in the older population. In the quest to provide answers to some problems the elderly population has, applications and projects arise from the Ambient Assisted Living area, providing services that help the user in his daily life, providing the needed help and trying to be as non-invasive as possible. The fact is that these systems operate optimally by using information about the user, assisting him according to his preferences. The data gathered for such events is highly personal and sensitive. Developed societies are registering a dramatic change in terms of population evolution, the most important fact being the ageing population. An alarming fact is that the birth-rate is dropping very fast, inverting the ageing pyramid that used to have a higher incidence on the young population, now having a higher incidence in the older population. In the quest to provide answers to some problems the elderly population has, applications and projects arise from the Ambient Assisted Living area, providing services that help the user in his daily life, providing the needed help and trying to be as non-invasive as possible. The fact is that these systems operate optimally by using information about the user, assisting him according to his preferences. The data gathered for such events is highly personal and sensitive. This can cause a loss of privacy and affect personal data. In this chapter, the authors present an Ambient Assisted Living project towards assistance to an elderly population. Weiser (1991) envisioned ubiquitous computing with computing and communicating entities woven into the fabrics of every day life. This chapter deals with the survivability of ambient resource-constrained wireless computing nodes, from fixed sensor network nodes to small devices carried out by roaming entities, for example, as part of a personal area network of a moving person. First, we review the assets that need to be protected, especially the energy of these unplugged devices. There are also a number of specific attacks that are described, for example, direct physical attacks are facilitated by the disappearing security perimeter. Finally, we survey the protection mechanisms that have been proposed with an emphasis on cryptographic keying material and trust management.
