Abstract:
This article uses Joseph Roach’s concept of performance genealogy, the constitutive nature of memory and surrogation that takes place at the site of performance, to examine the passing of the peace that took place at Aretha Franklin’s funeral, at which singers Fantasia Barrino and Jennifer Hudson performed. Barrino and Hudson’s voices, movement, and physical comportment echo the Baptist and Holiness-Pentecostal, or Sanctified, environments that Franklin first encountered as a child and that she continued to reflect throughout her life. But to hear these resonances, it is necessary to differentiate them from Afro-Protestant settings that are often collapsed into monolithic representations of a singular “Black church.” I specify how scholars hear Black women’s voices by showing that Barrino’s and Hudson’s particularities emanate certain characteristics of Franklin, enough to summon memories but not to mimic. Learning to hear individual Black women’s voices within a performance genealogy demands perceiving the different genres of spiritual theater that require different techniques of voice and presence. Seeing the distinctions among her inheritors allows scholars, audiences, and critics alike to perceive the theatrical education in Black sonic creation and makes possible representing Aretha Franklin’s artistic and interpretive brilliance. Ultimately, I argue that in order to respect Aretha Franklin, we must heed her assertion that there is in fact only one Aretha Franklin who is the sum of several social and spiritual worlds that inspired her artistic interpretations and that those in her lineage are not homogenous representations but share in her multitudes.

Abstract:
In this relational vignette Watson recalls growing up in and around Detroit as Aretha Franklin and other great local singers, many with Motown, rose to prominence. Franklin’s style was informed not only by her childhood singing gospel songs in her father’s church but also by her musical passion and activist politics. Unable to attend any of the informal tributes in Detroit around Franklin’s memorial service because she was out of the country, Watson relates how a Berlin gathering became a spontaneous memorial to Franklin’s musical genius.

as a life-long music lover, i've always been fascinated by ‘cover tunes’ – versions of songs recorded by artists other than the composer. sometimes the original can't be improved; in other instances a cover tune can transcend the original and become the best-known version. one of the better-known ‘cover’ stories involves otis redding and aretha franklin. redding had written the pulsating ‘respect’ and recorded it in 1965. but when redding heard franklin's searing version, recorded two years later, he was said to have remarked: ‘i just lost my song. that girl took it away from me.’

Bob Marley says one good thing about music—when it hits you, you feel no pain. So hit me with music. On the transition of Aretha Franklin, and the vitriolic trolling of her funeral and Childish Gambino 2019 Grammy award winning song and record of the year for “ This is America,” this piece is using music as a conceptual frame for understanding the pain of Black people in the United States. Recently, musicians Beyoncé, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pink, and many others have used their music to contest inequality in America. I grew up in Jamaica on Motown, Country, and Reggae music. This is what Aretha and many other musicians have meant to me.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study aims to analyze the progression of research in the domain of Hospitality Management since its inception in the early part of the twentieth century. Design/methodology/approach – A combination of qualitative analyses of the published literature in the past 80 years plus a quantitative survey of 613 manuscripts published in the International Journal of Hospitality Management (IJHM) from 2000 to 2012. Findings – The findings demonstrate that hospitality management research has progressed in the past four years through four distinct phases, namely, Story Tellers (1930-1950), Profilers (1950-1970), Copy Cats (1970-2005) and Innovators (since 2000). The evolution in the literature reflects that people in hospitality management and academia are improving their connection between theory and practice. Research limitations/implications – The quantitative part of this study was limited to articles published in the IJHM, and as such, they may not be fully representative of research articles that were published in other journals both in English and/or additional languages. Originality/value – The results of this study can be used as evidence that the modern field of hospitality management has reached a maturity level that is equal in rigor and sophistication to other disciplines in the domains of business administration and the social sciences.

Abstract:
This article analyzes Black feminist performance through two recently released live performance films. Set a generation apart, Amazing Grace (recorded 1972, released 2018), featuring Aretha Franklin, and Homecoming (2019), featuring Beyoncé, are artful and personal—both inspired by Black culture and the artists' personal histories, and offer virtuoso performances. The article operates in three modes: scholarly, personal, and remembered. The scholarship draws on the work of Hortense Spillers, bell hooks, Daphne Brooks, and others, while the personal and remembered portions consider significant sites of feminist formation that have shaped the author's perceptions and analyses of Black feminist performance in the present. These, along with close readings of the films, tap into Black women's ways of knowing and performing subjectivity.

Abstract:
Imagine Genghis Khan, Aretha Franklin, and the Cleveland Cavaliers performing an opera on Maui. This silly sentence makes a serious point: As humans, we can flexibly generate and comprehend an unbounded number of complex ideas. Little is known, however, about how our brains accomplish this. Here we assemble clues from disparate areas of cognitive neuroscience, integrating recent research on language, memory, episodic simulation, and computational models of high-level cognition. Our review is framed by Fodor's classic language of thought hypothesis, according to which our minds employ an amodal, language-like system for combining and recombining simple concepts to form more complex thoughts. Here, we highlight emerging work on combinatorial processes in the brain and consider this work's relation to the language of thought. We review evidence for distinct, but complementary, contributions of map-like representations in subregions of the default mode network and sentence-like representations of conceptual relations in regions of the temporal and prefrontal cortex.

Abstract:

This project consisted of three studies, two of which examined the effects of moisture deficits and moisture stress conditioning of black alder seedlings and the third examined the effects of shoot manipulations on the physiology of black alder seedlings and the nitrogenase activity of the seedlings' root nodules.

Endophyte strain was found to be nonsignificant in response to moisture deficit and moisture-stress conditioning (MSC). Using regression analysis MSC significantly decreased the impact of low water potentials on photosynthesis and acetylene reduction. There were no significant improvements in this response with increased MSC periods. Exposure of nodules to dry soil conditions while keeping the host plant hydrated did not significantly reduce acetylene reduction, nodule sugar content, transpiration or leaf conductance; however, photosynthesis was significantly reduced. Only defoliations of 100% significantly lowered acetylene reduction. Defoliations of 45% caused increases in photosynthesis and transpiration of residual leaves three days following defoliation. Nodule sugar content was unaffected by any level of defoliation.

Mood, Bryan Joel. "Latest Pleistocene and Holocene behaviour of Franklin Glacier, Mt. Waddington Area, British Columbia Coast Mountains, Canada." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/6111.

Full text
Abstract:
Holocene climate variability in the British Columbia Coast Mountains has resulted in repeated intervals of glacier expansion and retreat. Since reaching their late Holocene maximum positions in the late 20th century, glaciers in the region have experienced significant volumetric loss. The subsequent downwasting and frontal retreat has revealed forests buried by glacier advances throughout the Holocene, enabling description of significant intervals of ice expansion using dendroglaciology. This thesis characterizes dendroglaciological evidence as it relates to climate at two scales: (1) at Franklin Glacier in the Mt. Waddington area, and; (2) throughout the Coast Mountains. Dendroglaciological evidence from glacier forefields and lateral moraines in the Coast Mountains provides evidence for at least 11 intervals of glacier activity during the Holocene. The earliest record glacier activity is documented in the Pacific Ranges from 8.5 to 7.8 ka, after which glaciers in this region retreated during the early Holocene warm and dry interval. Following this a glacial advance from 6.7 to 5.6 ka was followed by a subsequent expansion episode from 5.1 to 4.6 ka in response to attendant cool and moist conditions in the Pacific Ranges. After 4.6 ka, glaciers in the Pacific and Boundary ranges advanced at 4.4 to 4.0 and 3.8 to 3.4 ka during intervals characterized wet conditions resulting from an intense, eastwardly positioned Aleutian Low pressure centre. Following 3.4 ka most glaciers retreated before expanded between 3.2 and 2.8 ka, retreated, and then advanced from 2.6 to 2.4 ka. Glacier advances from 1.8 to 1.1 ka occurred in response to a regional cooling event, and proceeded Little Ice Age advances from 0.6 to 0.4 ka. Franklin Glacier is an 18-km long valley glacier that originates below the west face of Mt. Waddington. Radiocarbon-dated wood samples from the proximal faces of lateral moraines flanking the glacier show that it expanded at least nine times since 13 ka. A probable Younger Dryas advance of Franklin Glacier at 12.8 ka followed the late glacial retreat and downwasting of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet from ca. 16.0 to 12.9 ka. During the succeeding early Holocene warm period, Franklin Glacier appears to have retreated significantly, leaving no record of glacial expansion until the mid-Holocene when it repeatedly advanced at 6.3, 5.4, and 4.6 ka in response to cool summer temperatures and generally moist conditions. Downwasting of the glacier surface after 4.6 ka was followed by intervals of expansion at 4.1, 3.1, and 2.4 ka contemporaneous with a period of increased precipitation. Following ice expansion at 2.4 ka into trees over 224 years in age, there is no record of the glacier activity until 1.5 ka when Franklin Glacier thickened and advanced into young subalpine fir trees, reflecting attendant cool and wet environmental conditions. During the Little Ice Age, advances at 0.8 and 0.6 ka preceded a mid-19th to early-20th century advance that saw Franklin Glacier attain its maximum Holocene extent in response to an extended interval of cold temperatures. The dendroglaciological record at Franklin Glacier is among the most comprehensive recovered from the British Columbia Coast Mountains and showcases the complexity of latest Pleistocene and Holocene glacier behaviour in the region.

Abstract:
Low molecular weight (LMW) heparins are obtained by diffent chemical procedures from conventional pig intestinal mucosa heparin. The LMW heparins differ in their molecular weight distribution and physicochemical properties. Therefore, we report of comparative studies on the anticoagulant and lipolytic effects of low molecular weight heparins in man.The following LMW heparins were used: BM 21-23 (Braun, Melsungen, FRG), CY 216 (Choay Laboratories, Paris, France), Heparin NM (Sandoz, Niimberg, FRG), Kabi 2165 (Kabi Vitrum AB, Stockholm, Sweden), RD Heparin (Hepar Industries, Franklin, US A), normal heparin (Braun). All heparins were administered intravenously and subcutaneously to six volunteers each. The data show considerable differences in the anticoagulant and lipolytic effects between the different low molecular weight heparins. From the area under the activity time curves (AUC) of the clotting assays for factor Xa (heptest), aPTT and thrombin clotting time the aXa/aPTT ratio ex vivo and aXa/alla ratio ex vivo were determined (table, average values)It can be seen that there are clear differences in the ex vivo ratios of the LMW heparins. There is a good correlation between the average molecular weight of the LMW heparins and the aXa/aPTT ratio after s.c. administration and of the aXa/alla ratio ex vivo after s.c. administration. Therefore, LMW heparins differ significantly in their clinical pharmacological properties.

Abstract:
A widely held view of thrombopoiesis is that platelets arise from fragmentation of the periphery of mature megakaryocytes (MK’s). Evidence against this concept was provided by Zucker-Franklin, who showed that platelet plasma membrane is different from that of the MK (freeze-fracture, membrane antigens). Several authors have described contractile processes in MK’sWe have performed detailed electronmicroscopic studies of the numerous small MK's of a subject with congenital macrothrombocytopenia. In the young granular MK’s a central zone with organelles and a thick peripheral zone without organelles can be observed. The absence of elements of the demarcation system in the peripheral zone argues against derivation of the demarcation system from the megakaryocyte plasma membrane. In the mature granular MK’s the heart of the central zone is not occupied by the nucleus, but by an area, free of organelles and membranes, containing fibrillar structures and the centrioles. Elements of the demarcation system, delineating platelet territories, radiate from this fibril-rich area, but do not extend into the very thin peripheral zone. In the platelet producing MK’s the peripheral zone is thicker and the central fibril-rich area is surrounded by separated platelet territories. The peripheral zone shows several openings. In the old MK’s the nucleus is only surrounded by a markedly thickened peripheral zone, which seems to result from contraction of the more extended peripheral zone of the platelet producing MK's.From these observations we conclude that, at least in this patient, platelets are formed inside the MK and are extruded through openings of the peripheral zone. Further studies with cytoskeleton markers are required to confirm that (!) the fibril-rich heart governs the organisation of platelet territories and (2) that platelet extrusion results from contraction of the peripheral zone, the latter however not giving rise to platelets.
