Abstract: Focusing on the reports of Amores insólitos de nuestra história (2001, 2011) and the novels Finesterre (2005), Árbol de familia (2010) and Todos éramos hijos (2014), this paper addresses how María Rosa Lojo articulates the concept of text with the metaphor of the fabric and how this fabric/text is also associated with the dress, the masks and the performance of the characters in general always associated with the act of writing and the act of appropriation, especially in the case of women, or other excentric characters (HUTCHEON, 1991), of his/her own body. The option for the work of the contemporary Argentine writer Maria Rosa as a corpus of this thesis is justified by the panel that traces, in her books, the history of Argentina and the peculiar way in which she constructs her narrative web, how she elaborates her chain-stitch.By deconstructing foundational myths and questioning the rioplatense identity constitution, Lojo proposes to re-signify the very concept of humanity. Involving readers, provides poetic enjoyment and deep reflection. By rescuing authors from the nineteenth century, she tells a new history of history and makes it possible to demonstrate how women are building their own way of putting themselves in the literature. Therefore the question that guides this work is to what extent the author weaves the history of Argentina to recreate herself an Argentinian? How does she construct sensory and sinesthetically the webtext-plot of her own argentinity? Had she also been benefited from the curative power of embroidery and narration (BENJAMIN, 1994, 1997; GAGNEBIN, 1985), expunging the feeling of the "exile-child" so often mentioned in interviews and articles (also texts, also webs) and of madness, the theme of the next book announced? As the main theoretical support of the research, texts from... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: In the second half of the nineteenth century, the cultural magazines in Latin America highlighting certain visions of society, identity projects and discussions about national history and literature. The Nueva Revista de Buenos Aires was an exponent of this type of publication, acting in the formation of a cultural nationalism in Argentina, but also distinguished by having a Latin American concern, which would be characteristic of magazines published in the following decades. Vicente Quesada and his son, Ernesto Quesada, idealizers and directors of the journal, sought to answer a central question: was there an Argentine and Latin American cultural tradition or would it be necessary to forge it? We aim to analyse the elaboration of a project of Argentine national identity promoted by Vicente and Ernesto Quesada, as wel as the performance of those intellectuals as cultural mediators in Latin American scope

Abstract: This research analyzes the representations of the gaucho in the comics of Inodoro Pereyra, a character created by the Argentine comedian Roberto Fontanarrosa, in the 70s of the twentieth century. Born as a parody of Gauchesca literature, of radiotheater and of Argentine folklore, the renegau's trajectory retakes the sarmientina metaphor of civilization and barbarism, which crosses not only the History of this country, but also inscribes itself in all Latin America's political tradition. In this sense, through the comic of this gaucho, it is possible to rediscuss important issues that have marked the history of the Argentine Republic such as the oppositions between pampa and coast, unitary and federal, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, which composes the image of a divided nation. Moreover, the epopee experienced by the character allows us to resize the theme "two Argentinas". Considering that, this comic is transfixed by images related to the social imagination of this nation

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to explain Argentine and Chilean approaches to modern Pan-Americanism. It offers several significant contributions to the historiography of Pan-Americanism and Southern Cone policymaking. First, it provides a sweeping overview of Pan-Americanism as a form of regional cooperation from 1888 to 1930, gathering the various strands of Pan-American history and forming a coherent overall narrative. It introduces a two-dimensional analytical framework for understanding Pan-American cooperation as a whole. The 'first dimension' included efforts to regulate the political relationships in the Americas while the 'second dimension' was more technical, social, cultural, and commercial. Within this framework, the approaches of two participant countries (Chile and Argentina) are closely examined in parallel. Attitudes towards the US, geopolitical calculations, and economic considerations – the basis of most historical interpretations – form part of the explanation, but this thesis presents a more complicated set of actors, influences, and ideas. Inspired by the methodology of Foreign Policy Analysis and recent studies in modern regionalism, the second half of the thesis deconstructs Pan-American policies. It examines four patterns that emerged through research: changes in the organization of policymaking, the influence of non-state actors and public opinion, the rise of intermestic strands of Pan-Americanism, and the role of ideas in international relations. Each pattern is analyzed and fully substantiated using evidence selected from the narrative and supplemented by wider research. Referencing models from multiple disciplines, the chapters reveal how different actors and objectives (including stemming social crisis, gaining prestige, and demonstrating commitment to democratic governance) influenced policy at different moments. Ultimately, this thesis emphasises the interplay of factors and suggests that unpacking Pan-Americanism has implications for understanding Latin America's role in international history and modern regionalism in the Americas.

Abstract:
This study investigates the isotopic signatures of human skeletal remains that were recovered from several sites along the coast and inland in the north-central Patagonian region of Argentina. Human skeletal remains, dating from 2500 BP through the early historic period, are examined to determine the relative significance of terrestrial and aquatic food resources and subsequently, the extent to which coastal food resources were exploited by indigenous Argentinians. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes contained within human bone collagen and apatite are measured quantitatively to determine the relative significance of marine and terrestrial foods. This study, one of the first isotopic studies of indigenous diet on the Atlantic coast of Argentina, is significant because it provides initial results to be used for the reconstruction of aboriginal subsistence patterns prior to and after European contact.

Abstract:
Argentina was ruled by a military dictatorship from 1976-1983, and underwent a period of intense political repression. This dissertation examines how three Argentine women writers--Edna Pozzi, Martha Gavensky, and Matilde Sanchez--approach the problem of reconstructing history in the aftermath of the military dictatorship from both a feminine and feminist perspective. Three novels published after the return to democratic rule are analyzed: El lento rostro de la inocencia (1983) by Edna Pozzi, Martin o el Juego de la Oca (1986) by Martha Gavensky, and El Dock (1993) by Matilde Sanchez. The purpose of this research is to show how these works, framed as investigative narratives constructed around female absence, constitute gendered histories of the Proceso de Reorganizacion Nacional (Proceso) and the "Dirty War". The conspicuous absence of the central female subject in these novels evokes multiple levels of silence and absenting of the feminine in patriarchal society and the authoritarian state. It is suggested that these endeavor to reinscribe a multiplicity of female experiences into national history, writing against the masculinist historical tradition that has systematically "disappeared" the feminine.

After the Second World War, the international relationships suffered changes in the whole world. In South America, the industrialization and the necessity of State intervention in the economy was remarkable, such as the demands for catching international investments and borrowings from the United States. With the foundation of CEPAL (Comissão Econômica para a América Latina), integration measurements between the countries were considered, both in domestic as in international side, in the certainty that only with the entwined of those elements development in the region would be possible. So, with the coincidence of Getúlio Vargas and Juan Perón nacional-populismo government, after Juescelino Kubitschek and Arturo Frondizi’s desenvolvimentismo, Brazil and Argentina became the leader countries in the region into the process of politic convergence, trying to negotiate investments from the hegemonic nation of the continent and planning a big-economy that could increase the value of exportation products and to decrease the prices of importations. Brazilian diplomacy’s multilateralization associated with Argentina’s partnership, such as the Brazilian economic accelerated development awoke the necessity of Argentina developing a high profile diplomatic alliance with the main neighbor, insofar as the platinos were in serious difficulties with Washington and London. In the beginning of 1960 that enterprise arrived at its acme, collapsed under the military coup in Argentina in 1962 and, paradoxically, by the States incompatible reliance beyond the presence of multinationals, North-American economy and the external capital

During the mid to late 1900s many Latin American countries found themselves under the rule of violent military regimes and in civil war. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the atrocities committed in the late 20th century throughout Latin America and to discuss the ways in which these societies, affected by state violence, were able to overcome the past. In this paper, I will look at the purpose of truth and reconciliation commissions and their outcomes in Chile, Argentina, and Guatemala in order to find some similarities and compare and contrast the successes and failures of the different commissions in their respective settings.

Abstract:
This work further disaggregates the Argentine corporatist state at the time of initial labor incorporation by analyzing gender. The analysis focuses on the separate set of inducements and constraints implemented as a result of incorporation measures by the populist regime of Juan Domingo Peron (1946 to 1955) which served to manipulate and control the gendered division of the Argentine work force. Labor legislation, labor force organization by the state, and labor contracts negotiated under the auspices of the state are utilized to accomplish the disaggregation.

This tesis analyzes the aesthetic and ideological representations in the practice of documentary in the New Latin American Cinema (NCL) from the speeches Raymundo Gleyzer (Argentina), Geraldo Sarno (Brazil) and Santiago Álvarez (Cuba), between the years 1964 and 1974. For this, we established parallels between the practice of the achievements of these filmmakers and theoretical positions espoused in manifestos film produced in these countries, as well as examined the voices of discursive production, which, in this period, enunciated the cinema as a tool of social transformation in Latin America. Furthermore, we investigated the process of production (filming to distribution), a key element for understanding the political cinema of that time, as these filmmakers acted as a rule outside the commercial circuit display. Finally, we inquired how the documentary can be a historical narrative. In short, this research purposed to deepen the studies of the documentary in the New Latin American Cinema, seeking interactions between theory and practice, film and history and the meanings of these documentary productions for this moment in history, politics and culture in Latin America

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the organizing strategies and successes of Afro-Argentine civil society organizations (CSO) in Buenos Aires. I argue that despite low representation, Afro-Argentines have strategically designed their initiatives in ways that draw on national discourses of identity rights and nationalism; and, as well, have used cultural inclusion to influence state actors, creating agency and increasing visibility. Afro-Argentines are a highly understudied population due to the common belief that they do not exist in Argentina as a group. This thesis not only dispels that myth with a history of the long hidden importance of Afro-Argentines contributions to the formation of the Argentine nation and culture, but also provides a contemporary analysis which shows that they are a vibrant group which faces marginalization and exclusion on a daily basis. The central argument is that civil society is a viable method by which Afro-Argentines can combat institutionalized racism. I show this with an analysis of the various theories on civil society, focusing strongly on Putnam's (1996) argument that strong voluntary organizations are vital to making democracy work. This assessment lends to the argument that civil society places Afro-Argentines in a discursive space in which they can communicate with state actors to make claims for cultural and citizenship rights. This argument is followed with concrete examples which show that the successful organizing of three Afro-Argentine CSOs in Buenos Aires have increased the visibility and agency of the Afro-Argentine community. Overall I provide a contribution to the argument for civil society as a crucial component of functional democracies, contribute to academic discussion of the black diaspora in Latin America, and provide an in depth analysis of a highly understudied demographic.

Abstract:
This dissertation offers a reflection on the artistic exchange occurred between Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires in the 1970s. This reciprocal network is centered in the University of Sao Paulos Museum of Contemporary Arte (MAC USP), under de auspice of Walter Zanini, and in Buenos Aires Art and Communication Center (CAYC), directed by Jorge Glusberg. We begin with a brief study of cultural modernization programs in Brazil and Argentina, as of the establishment of the first institutions of a modern nature, in the 1950s and 1960s. In this trajectory we map venues in which new avant-garde were stimulated, from the dawn of pop art to the dematerialization of the artistic object. We demonstrate that MAC USP and CAYC established essential interdisciplinary and multimedia platforms aiming at amplifying and motivating experimental practices, especially concept art, thus constituting important loci of contemporary art in Latin America at that time period. We aim to analyze the particular interests of each administration, their institutional profile and mechanisms to broadcast and promote conceptual propositions sustained by each organization. Finally, we trace the presence of Argentine artists of Grupo Los Trece, associated to CAYC, in MAC USPs collection.

So, with the coincidence of Getúlio Vargas and Juan Perón nacional-populismo government, after Juescelino Kubitschek and Arturo Frondizi's desenvolvimentismo, Brazil and Argentina became the leader countries in the region into the process of politic convergence, trying to negotiate investments from the hegemonic nation of the continent and planning a big-economy that could increase the value of exportation products and to decrease the prices of importations. Brazilian diplomacy's multilateralization associated with Argentina's partnership, such as the Brazilian economic accelerated development awoke the necessity of Argentina developing a high profile diplomatic alliance with the main neighbor, insofar as the platinos were in serious difficulties with Washington and London. In the beginning of 1960 that enterprise arrived at its acme, collapsed under the military coup in Argentina in 1962 and, paradoxically, by the States incompatible reliance beyond the presence of multinationals, North-American economy and the external capital

Abstract:
This thesis engages with representations of social crisis in Argentine fictional cinema during 1998-2005, a period when Argentina experienced a deep economic crisis that brought about significant changes in politics, culture, society and the arts. My emphasis is upon the ways in which cinema interpreted both present and long-established dialogues with national and social discourse, while re-assessing notions of national identity, culture and social class. The study contributes to a growing body of scholarship on Argentine film which has no precedent in history. In particular, works published in English over the last five years have offered fresh reflections upon a field that has remained dominated by narrative and aesthetic, rather than analytical, approaches By combining close textual analysis of films to the study of their cultural context my research argues that cinema addressed predominantly middle-class Argentine audiences with critical questions concerning the transformations they were experiencing over those years of crisis. As works of fiction, the films also offered ordinary people the possibility to identify with their own lives and values, stimulating critical reflection and emotional engagement, as well as enjoyment and laughter. The modes through which these films addressed Argentine audiences are themselves as rich and complex as their narrative representations of crisis. Amongst the most compelling achievements of recent Argentine cinema are the diversity of its modes of address, its strong themes, interesting styles and captivating narrative strategies. These films offered domestic audiences both reflective and divergent views on social reality that, without any doubt, enriched the cultural arena in which Argentineans could reflect on their past, their daily life, their values and their relationship with social minorities. In this sense cinema helped Argentine people to learn to live in democracy.

Abstract:
Peronism has been one of the most widely used terms in the context of Argentinean politics, history and culture over the last 60 years. In spite of the fact that there is no official definition of the term, many different political strategies in Argentina are referred to as Peronist. Why is it so complicated to define the concept of Peronism? What does it really mean when Argentinean presidents claim to be Peronists? This thesis is based on the hypothesis that Peronism is primarily brand of political populist projects. The first chapter classifies the concept of populism, the second chapter deals with the particular populism in Latin America and the third chapter analyzes the individual mandates of Peronist presidents. The analysis strongly supports the working hypothesis.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the relationship between language, sacramentality, and enchantment in three twentieth-century Argentine poets: Francisco Luis Bernárdez (1900-1976), Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), and Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972). It seeks to ask and answer two fundamental questions. First, to what extent might it be possible to understand the conception of poetic language characteristic of modern poetry as an articulation, however muffled and secularized, of a sacramental apprehension of language and world? Second, how might such a conception be related to what Max Weber famously called “the disenchantment of the world”? The dissertation begins with a broad overview of the development of the concept of disenchant within Western culture and then proceeds to a reading of the three poets mentioned above. Special attention is given throughout both to historical and political context and to the specific ways in which Bernárdez, Borges, and Pizarnik understand and employ poetic language. In each case, I attempt to show how, among both secular and religious poets, language retains vestiges of a sacramental understanding of the world.

Murphy, Jean Marie. Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289141.

Full text
Abstract:
The discourse of the last military regime in Argentina (1976-1983) emphasized the importance of protecting the family unit. The official rhetoric of the dictatorship assigned a formative, character building function to the institution of the family and idealized the concept of the traditional, nuclear family. According to the military leaders, the peace and security of the nation depended on the stability of the family. In spite of this rhetoric of family values, the tactics employed by the Military Junta transformed the family into an object of repression. The kidnappings and disappearances fragmented many families; parents and children suffered due to the state sponsored violence. As a consequence, there emerged a clear distinction between the official discourse of the dictatorship and the reality of the Argentine citizenship. The objective of our study is to examine how this contradiction between the discourse and the reality manifested itself in the literature of the moment. The literature appropriated the symbol of the family and subverted the official image in order to deconstruct and denounce the entire authoritarian system. In the first chapter we will present the historical background of the military regimes in Argentina. Special attention will be paid to the Junta Militar of 1976-1983 and its sociopolitical consequences. In the following chapters we will analyze the texts of three Argentine authors: La penultima version de la Colorada Villanueva (1978) by Marta Lynch, Ganarse la muerte (1976) by Griselda Gambaro and Cambio de armas (1982) by Luisa Valenzuela. As we explore the different representations of the family and the home in these works, we will be able to show the connection between the fragmentation of the family unit and the disintegration of the society at large. We will also demonstrate how the distorted personal relations reflect the social conditions under authoritarianism. We will consider the formation of the narrative voice as well, being that it represents the critical aspect of the texts on a structural level.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the fundamental irradiating nuclei of the poetics of the Argentine writer Juan José Saer (1937-2005) in the essay El río sin orillas, aiming to analyze the the common aspects and specificities between the essay writing and fictional prose of the author. Originally published in 1991, El río sin orillas probes the history, literature and cultural imagination of Argentinian society through their relation with the River Plate. Along our reading of El río sin orillas, we also propose to promote a dialogue with the Hispanic- American tradition of essay writing and, more precisely, with the tradition of writing that Saer himself reveals through his valorization of the unclassifiable character of certain texts. In addition to these main goals, some themes and issues that allow us to analyze the two-way traffic between the authors essays and fictional prose as well as the blurry boundary between these two discursive fields have been selected: the problem of literary genres and the tradition of unclassifiable works; the in between space of the foreigner; the notion of literature in Saer as speculative anthropology; the invention of the past; violence and politics; and the creation of a singular geography of Saerian zone.

Abstract:
This investigation into certain elements of critical Latin American Literature was prompted by the apparent post-1980s neglect by academics of Anglo-Saxon origin to engage with the state and social class, in the contextual framework of the political economy, as central elements of social analysis. This analytical perspective of the state was marginalised by post-modernism and post-structuralism during the 1980s and 1990s with the state re-defined by contemporary globalisation theorists according to a notion of the nation-state. This constitutes one element of an overaching configuration of power relationa and networks comprising a variety of transnational players who assume political and economic roles to pursue their interests. This designation of players detracts from the centrality of class as an analytical tool, preferring to dwell on notions of power and conflict without pursuing tha analysis to its fundamental origin in a system of control and ownership of resources by dominant transnational corporations. An abandoning of the state as a central conceptual tool has coincided with changes , in the way the role performed by the university is conceptualised, foregrounding symptoms of an ideological intrusion by neoliberal discourse concerning the role of the University, rather than locating the cause. Hence the greater struggle for ideological hegemony that occurs within society, waged by the mass media, as mouthpiece of implementation by agents of transnational financial capital, and progating a neoliberal discourse, seems overlooked.

Abstract:
Despite their progressive on-the-books environmental legislation, Ecuador and Argentina have hosted increasing amounts of extraction projections in their borders over the last few decades. Beyond increased environmental degradation, the expansion of extraction economies in these countries has drove mass scale social movements orchestrated by disenfranchised peoples. This thesis investigates the link between social movements and environmental law reformation, and whether such social movements are able to strengthen the national legal and institutional framework for environmental management. To evaluate this inquiry, this thesis explores socials movements in Ecuador in the late twentieth century and in Argentina in the early twenty first century.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the author's English translation of key passages of an Argentine crime novel: Jose Pablo Feinmann's Ultimos dias de la victima (1979). The thesis establishes a theoretical framework revolving around the original text and its translation. This theoretical framework examines the novel's place in the history of the crime fiction genre in Argentina, translation's role in this history, the socio-political context in which the novel was created, and the linguistic, cultural, stylistic, and interpretive challenges of its translation. Most importantly, this thesis will examine how the novel can be translated for an audience who might not be aware of the socio-political situation that provides the context for a number of interpretations of this story.

In this study, are discussed the experiences of Brasil, Argentina, Chile and México, mainly after their implementation of Neoliberalism, starting from the analyses of alternative economic thoughts related to liberalism and state intervention on economy. To do so, the histories of that countries from the beginning of last century, are revisited in order to identify the reasons behind the implementation of those system, as well as to verify the results hitherto. Every nation has a different history of accomplishments and sufferings. The main macroeconomic goals are related to monetary stabilization, sustained growth and employment, with fair distribution of the resources and economic and social benefits to the population. Trying to achieve those results, several alternative economic schools and related practices have been implemented in several regions. Many analysts and critics pointed that the end of the communist experience in Soviet Union was a confirmation of the best approach brought by the capitalist system of production and distribution of goods and services. All the countries had to do was open their economies for the free transactions between the nations, in every aspect of their economic activities. The results have been, in the beginning of a new century, of both successes and defeats. The data show that even for the countries with better economic performance, several problems are observed concerning social aspects related to low salaries and bad income distribution. With the beginning of a new century, the interest lies in knowing what to expect in terms of benefits for the present and the coming generations to Brazil concerning the adoption of the procedures recommended under the Neoliberals approach here and in other main Latin American countries. We also look for information to confirm the future of Neoliberalism or eventually its substitution by other kind of theories and practices to assure sustained growth and stability to the global economy. Finally, it is discussed the impossibility to implement a pure and closed model of economic thought, without considering the subjects related to the history and specificities of a particular society

Abstract:
The goal of the thesis "The EU-MERCOSUR: specific position of Argentina?" is the analysis of relations between the EU and MERCOSUR. The first part of the thesis deals with the characteristics of the selected territory. The second part of the thesis elaborates the relations between the EU and MERCOSUR. It includes historical development of cooperation, law basis of relations and business exchange. The crucial part of this chapter focuses on development of negotiation of inter-regional association agreement and its benefits for both parties. The thesis elaborates current progress of the negotiation especially in the context of the upcoming May 2010 EU and Latin America summit, where the association agreement could be signed. The agreement, however, will probably not include all the originally planned areas. The third part of the thesis analyzes the role of Argentina in MERCOSUR and relations of the EU and Argentina. The first hypothesis, claiming that Argentina is more oriented towards inter-regional MERCOSUR trade than the other member states, was not proved. The second hypothesis, claiming that signing the association agreement with EU will be very important for Argentina due to its strong ties to the European continent, was proved. The question, what the benefits for Argentina would be, if the Association Agreements would be signed without the chapter concerning the liberalization of the Agricultural products trade, still remains.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The strength of a stock market is related to transparency and reliability of all information available for its users. In this sense, both the auditor and his work, which is disseminated through the auditing reports, become the guarantee of the economical reality from all publicly traded companies. However, in Latin America reality (especially in Brazil, Colombia and Argentina), the impact of the Auditor and his reports still has not been verified upon the stock markets. Hence, this present job aims to respond to the lack of studies stating the relationship between Auditing and Stock markets in Latin America. The analysis is done through a event study, evaluating what is the auditing report effect upon the prices of stocks from the main publicly traded companies in Brazilian stock market (Bolsa de valores, Mercadorias e Futuros BM&FBovespa), Colombian stock market (Bolsa de valores de Colombia BVC) and Argentine stock market (Bolsa de Comercio de Buenos Aires BCBA). In particular, two studies are carried out, one univariable and the other multivariable, in order to test the hypothesis. In Brazilian and Argentine cases, the study covers the period from 2000 until 2007. In the first case, the disclosure of the modified auditing reports, considering public companies of the BM&FBovespa Stock Exchange, does not affect their stock price. On the contrary, in Argentine case, an opposite result is obtained: the auditing reports impact on BCBA Stock Exchange; specifically, the disclosure of modified auditing reports has a negative effect on stock prices. Finally, for the Colombian stock market, a study period from 2001 until 2007 is utilized. In Colombian case, similar results to those reported from Brazilian analysis are obtained. The contribution of this thesis is to evaluate and quantify the role of the auditor in the countries mentioned above and, indirectly, the use of the auditor\'s report as way to disseminate Auditing information.

Weinberg, Marina. "Back to national development| State policies and indigenous politics in Northwestern Argentina." Thesis, State University of New York at Binghamton, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3612851.

Abstract:

This dissertation contributes to debates on processes of state formation and their relationship to indigenous policies and politics in Argentina. It analyzes and compares two major political economic configurations of the state: the neoliberal from 1989 to 2001, and the so-called "post-neoliberal" from the 2001 national crisis to the present. The study analyzes anthropologically how these two state models shaped strategies concerning the indigenous population that reflected specific political and economic orientations and interests; and conversely, the ways in which indigenous peoples have experienced continuities and variations between the two periods, as well as the changing indigenous' strategies resulting from these political fluctuations. While much has been written on the nature of the post-neoliberal state in indigenous regions for the Bolivian case and Ecuador, the Argentine experience has been largely overlooked, due perhaps to the strong state-led homogenizing tradition which has obscured the country's multiethnic character. If we assume that we are indeed witnessing a change of epoch in some Latin American nations, and that there is an evident process of recovery of state functions, the novelty and contribution of this dissertation will be to explore not only the nature of those claims but also to expand on de Sousa Santos' proposal: Which kind of state is back? (de Sousa Santos 2010). Which are the characteristics of this novel state model? To what extent it is it actually (and entirely) "new" or if it is taking/using elements, strategies and procedures of the prior neoliberal phase. And if so, which elements of neoliberalism still persist in this new political era and which ones are different from that period. Finally, this dissertation contributes to the bottom-up perspective, while analyzing the state considering societal mediators, societal actors that interface with the state. This inclusion allows us to observe in a very detailed manner the ways in which these actors shape and negotiate hegemony and state from below, while also being part of the state structure.

Ferradas, Claudia Mónica. "Re-defining Anglo-Argentine literature : from travel writing to travelling identities." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2011. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/13238/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study proposes a definition of Anglo-Argentine literature, a literary corpus that has not been explicitly defined, and provides a reading list of Anglo-Argentine works on the basis of that definition. The research is based on the presupposition that Anglo-Argentine texts can be used to contribute to an intercultural approach to language and literature teaching in the Argentine higher education context. Such texts can encourage reflection on how writing on Argentina in English has contributed to constructing Argentina's multiple identities. Therefore, compiling the titles that make up the corpus of Anglo-Argentine writing, making it available and analysing it critically is the contribution that this thesis aims to make. To make the findings available to the Argentine ELT (English Language Teaching) community, a webpage accompanies the thesis: http://claudiaferradas.net. The site provides access to the reading list with links to digital publications, intercultural materials on Anglo-Argentine texts and critical articles derived from the thesis. The compilation of texts does not aim to be exhaustive; it is a critical presentation of the titles identified in terms of the intercultural objectives stated above. As a result, not all titles are discussed in the same degree of detail and some are simply mentioned on the reading list. Two works are selected as 'focus texts' for in-depth analysis and all the works identified are grouped into 'series' with common denominators, which may be thematic or connected to the context of production. As regards the analytical focus, the thesis traces the construction of the other in early texts and how this representation is reinforced or modified in later works. The other is understood both as the unfamiliar landscape and the native inhabitants: both original inhabitants ('Indians' in the literature) and Gauchos. Urban white creoles are also part of the discussion when the narrator's gaze focuses on them. The theoretical framework for this analysis is based upon post-colonial theory and the notion of transculturation. Finally, the thesis extends the concept of Anglo-Argentine literature to works produced in English by Argentine writers whose mother tongue is not English and who do not have English-speaking ancestors. This leads to a reconsideration of the definition initially proposed to approach Anglo- Argentine literature as a fluid third place, a subversion of the binary implied by the adjective 'Anglo-Argentine' that embraces travelling identities in constant process of construction in contact with otherness.

Parker, Julie. "Pastoral Livelihoods and Household Water Management in the Central Argentine Andes." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc801921/.

Full text
Abstract:
Pastoralists tend to occupy highlands and drylands lands with uncertain climates and are experienced at coping with climatic variability and drought. Increasingly, however, the speed with which climate patterns are changing has become an issue of concern. This study examines household water management strategies of pastoralists in western Argentina. In this semi-arid region, pastoralists rely primarily on streams and springs fed by snow and glacier melt from the Andes, and have developed various strategies to meet their water needs. They also deal with myriad challenges posed by climate, economic, and socio-cultural change and work vigorously to maintain their herds – a combination of cattle, goats, and sheep – in this water scarce region. The goal of this study is to understand: 1) different household water management strategies; 2) the ways pastoral livelihoods are changing in response to changes in water supply; and 3) the socio-economic changes that affect pastoral livelihoods. Information from interviews, household surveys, and participant observations reveals that climate fluctuation impacts water supplies and use, herd size, and expenses made on tanks, technology, and infrastructure for the storage and transport of water, food for animals, and subsistence crops. Understanding the micro-scale, water practices of pastoral households provides insight into the ways rural populations in semi-arid and arid environments respond to changes in climate and meet their water needs. Moreover, these findings can contribute to scholarship on traditional and local knowledge and resource management systems, and may potentially inspire the development of adaptive management solutions.

Senderowicz, Daniela V. L. "Toward a Discourse of Mestizaje: The Role of the Patagonian Frontier in the Construction of Argentine National Identity." PDXScholar, 2001. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1736.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay will explore the notion of mestizaje in the Republic of Argentina. Specifically, it will use the Argentine Patagonia as a point of departure for this analysis, an area in which conquest resulted in a community of mixed-race and mixed culture individuals. The juxtaposition of the struggle between white settlers and Mapuche-Tehuelche Indians of the region demonstrates a continuity in discrimination in the nation's history. For this very reason, the area represents a general pattern present throughout the country, and, hence, I use it as a prototype to draw conclusions about race relations in the nation as a whole. I will show that this is a discussion not openly explored in the historiography of the republic. The popular discourses that promoted the creation of a white population is at the core of this issue. Furthermore, the continuation of such discourses into the twenty-first century contribute to the notion of separatism within mainstream, academic, and government circles. Argentina, however, both today and over the past four hundred years, has been diverse and mixed. Because of the complexity of its population, mestizaje is a viable area of study for Argentina. The history of whites and Indians in Patagonia exemplify this analysis.

Abstract:
The objective is analyzing the publication of printed materials of anarchist groups in the initial period of the worker\'s movement in Buenos Aires. During the creation of the first worker\'s organizations in the city, the publishing activity had a major role for these groups, with the functions of propaganda and organization. We will study the editing field through a research on the subjects and the authors that were published, and also on the adopted media and on the people who were on the head of the editing work, trying to find out which were the selling and distribution networks. We believe that these matters can help us to understand the strategies chosen by these groups for promoting their ideas and the importance of the editing activity to get activists together. Thus, we can comprehend the development process of anarchism in the worker\'s movement in Buenos Aires by the relations between politics and publishing.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines two radically different political projects in Argentina as moments in a dynamic of revolution and counterrevolution. The short-lived, progressive Peronist government of 1973 sought to construct a more egalitarian and democratic society, addressing social inequalities while fomenting political mobilization. In response, the last and most violent military dictatorship (1976–1983) aimed at suppressing social antagonisms and the perceived excesses of mass democracy. In each case, education was a means to form citizens suitable to a specific conception of society. Therefore, each political project can be understood with special clarity through an examination of civic education and pedagogic reforms. The progressive Peronist government encouraged students to participate in exploring and addressing social inequalities to bring about social justice. The dictatorship was counterrevolutionary insofar as it put forth an ideological project without precedent in previous military regimes that aimed not simply at preserving the status quo ante but at founding a new society. In order to do so, it sought to eradicate “subversion” and to form spiritually minded, obedient, and individualistic citizens through a broad schooling reform. Based on both archival research and oral history, this dissertation sheds light on the political uses of education, on the Cold War dynamic of revolution and counterrevolution in Latin America, and on the centrality of social antagonisms for our understanding of authoritarianism.

A common misconception is that Latin America is one homogeneous market. In reality each Latin American country has unique characteristics with sectors that collectively span much of the risk/reward spectrum. For example, Mexico is perceived to be highly correlated with the United States while Argentina and Brazil seem less so. On the other hand, the interrelation between these economies is also significant. Economic crises in Mexico, Brazil, and most recently Argentina have had important effects throughout the region. Many real estate investors simply view Latin America as a land of economic trouble. Yet several outsiders are starting or continuing to seek investment opportunities in the region. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and compare, from the viewpoint of a foreign investor, three major real estate markets in the region: Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. The paper will attempt to explain how the real estate "game" is played in each country, what the specific risks are for the foreign investor, and how investors are currently seeking to maximize risk-adjusted returns in these markets.
