Abstract“Virtue wands” do appear in Argentinean folk narrative as useful devices used by the hero to achieve his dreams. Using the correct charm and waving his wand, the Argentinean folk hero John the Lazy manages to marry the princess and to live without working. Charms show in this way how to do things with words, pronouncing the proper words in the right situation. In this presentation, I deal with the formulaic use of a magic charm in this Argentinean folktale, collected in fieldwork in 1988. This charm deals with an invocation to the “Wand of virtue” given to the hero by God`s mercy, whos

In this work, the concept of music performance in the context of the Covid-19 lockdown is assessed through a brief musicological discussion based on a public survey performed on the broad population in Argentina during the lockdown. Traditionally, listeners and performers interact in concert halls sharing the same space and time. During the Covid-19 lockdown, listeners and performers were obliged to stay home and thus, online music consumption in the genres of Classic, Jazz, Pop and Folk became “state of the art”. With the increasing importance of performances through the internet, the intera

The circo criollo, or Argentine native circus, arose as one of the most important forms of popular expression during the late nineteenth century. This performance context can serve as a site for exploring old and new constructions of Argentine identity that encompassed the lower and middle classes and included native and immigrant groups, particularly in Buenos Aires. Although the native circus contributed greatly to the creation of such an identity, little is known about the musical practices of the circus itself, including what types of music or dance were performed, the manner in which th

His music reflects the ancient aboriginal primitivism and the nationalistic spirit of Argentine traditional music. Strong rhythm has played a significant role in his music. According to Ginastera’s own criteria, his works can be divided into three periods, but only the first two periods are related to nationalistic music. The first period is called “objective nationalism” (1937-1947), where folk elements are used directly in the works. The second period, called “subjecti
