An analysis of the seven daily newspapers with the widest circulation in Argentina, including the Peronist La Epoca, shows the humanisation of capitalism and social justice as the main topics of discussion in Argentine society between 1930 and 1946. Newspapers and parties debated the foundations of a much desired democratic revival and depicted the government of F. D. Roosevelt as a model to be followed. By 1946 most Argentines supported the implementation of policies similar to those of Roosevelt. In the light of this, Perón and the Unión Democrática competed to present themselves as the Arge

In the present study, ten focused interviews were conducted where female university professors from Argentina, the United States and Mexico read news articles in newspapers about Cristina Fernández, Hillary Clinton and Margarita Zavala, respectively. Seven ways in which journalistic messages were stylistically and discursively deconstructed were found, among which are the questioning of editorial decisions, as well as evidencing how the ideology of the newspaper generated a specific treatment with the intention of manipulating audiences.

It first examines the arrival and settlement of psychoanalytic associations between 1975 and 2005 to argue that analysts were important actors in Palermo’s real estate transformation. Se

Such interpretations held that Argentina was dominated by a kind of evil force originated a long time ago, but whose effects persisted in the present. And, unless it was conjured once and for all, it would remain active and damaging in the future. Thus, the “crisis” was seen as an episode of the continuous failures. AbstractThe Uruguayan Civil War (1839–1851), in which Brazil, France, Britain and the Argentine Confederation were involved, became an international conflict with humanitarian claims in favour of the besieged population of Montevideo with its prominent French community. General Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires with dictatorial powers, was allied against Montevideo, where many of his unitarian enemies had fled and where his regime was under attack through inflammatory newspapers and pamphlets. This chapter will examine the emotional strategies deployed by anti-Rosist dissidents in order to provoke a stronger involvement by France and Britain in support of Montevideo and the unitarians.

Abstract Periodical publications are in our time like daily respiration; neither freedom, nor progress, nor culture is conceivable without this vehicle that links societies to one another, and makes us feel at every moment members of the human species, due to the influence and repercussion of events in certain countries on others. It is for this reason that despotic and criminal governments must, if they are to exist, seize possession of the newspapers and persecute those in neighboring countries that expose their iniquities. Rosas, at the expense of the taxes paid by the poor Argentine people, has established a network of newspapers throughout the world that are funded to whitewash and defend his atrocities.

Abstract:
Chapter Six demonstrates that connections between Italian consumers in New York and Buenos Aires became particularly politicized with the rise of Fascism in Italy. During the 1935 League of Nations’ boycott against Italy, Benito Mussolini called on migrants to consume for their homeland. Unlike World War I, however, during the boycott migrants used the Italian-language press to debate their patriotic duty as consumers and to form identities and experiences around U.S., Argentine, and Italian goods. Ironically, as Mussolini tried to divorce Italian women from Western-style consumerism at home, Italian-language newspapers abroad—supported economically by Italian fascists—employed links between women and foodstuffs to generate ethnic identities. By the 1930s, Italy, the U.S., and Argentina all competed for the attention of Italian consumers, especially women.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that Italian migrants in Argentina employed Italian-language newspapers to construct gendered and racialized constructions of familial love between Italians and Argentines as “brotherly people” during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These everyday articulations of emotions and love in the ethnic press, the chapter contends, were just as important to the creation of international allegiances and national identities as were the more formal decisions made by diplomats and statesmen. Newspapers like La Patria degli Italiani depicted foreign relations between Italy and Argentina as family relations—as relations between racially similar “Latin brothers”—to justify male-predominate migration, to promote favorable attitudes toward Italy and its migrants, and to rebuke unbrotherly destinations like the United States.

Abstract:
Abstract From 1920 to 1936, Borges wrote over two hundred critical prose pieces for magazines and newspapers, including literary essays, reviews, prologues, and a few manifestoes and lampoons. Over this period, he published five collections of essays, of which he would suppress the first three in his Obras completas. Additionally, in 1930, he published his only thematic book, Evaristo Carriego, on the poet who first sang about the Buenos Aires neighborhood that Borges had made the place of his own literary foundation. This chapter offers a comprehensive account of how, in the early essays, Borges develops an idiosyncratic formalism that blends metaphysics, imagination, and rhetoric in microscopic analyses of literature and popular culture. He rigorously examines how aesthetic emotion is achieved, with an increasing emphasis, by the late 1920s, on how genres relate to experience and affect reading contexts. These explorations, which unfold concurrently with Borges’s search for an individualized Argentine voice in the 1920s, determine the shifting form of his essays and what will be peculiarly essayistic in his fictions.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter’s argument about democratic breakdown in Argentina in 1976 focuses on three factors. First, extreme radicalization on the left and right quickly led powerful establishment actors to shift away from support or acceptance of democracy. The revolutionary left had no chance of capturing power, but it galvanized an extremist right-wing response. The country was besieged by right-wing and left-wing bombings, kidnappings, assassinations, factory seizures, and violent attacks on companies, newspapers, and cultural organizations. Second, the democratic government failed to handle Argentina’s economic and public-security problems. These crises generated a public perception of chaos and power vacuum. In response, actors who had welcomed democracy in 1973 clamored for a coup in 1976. Third, democracy might have survived if nonextremists, especially political leaders, had embraced it. However, most of them were indifferent or even hostile to democracy.

Pedro Esteve, the primary editor, gave expression to his ideas in this newspaper and while it represented Spanish firemen and marine workers, it reported on many other workers’ struggles in different parts of the world, for example, supporting and collecting funds for the Mexican revolutionary brothers Flores Magón. This newspaper, as all the anarchist press, was part of a transnational network and had a circulation not only in many parts of the United States but also in Latin American countries, including Argentina and Cuba, as well as on the other side of the Atlantic, in Spain and various European countries.

Abstract This chapter explores what can be learned from an important Borges manuscript, the first draft of “Del culto de los libros” [Of the Cult of Books]. Borges’s central preoccupation in the text is the relation between oral speech and writing. The marginal and internal references are analyzed to show how the author’s wide range of reading is brought together in a newspaper article from 1951, later included in Otras inquisiciones [Other Inquisitions]. His discussion of the importance of books in modern culture is in turn shown to be an intervention in a debate around the importance of intellectual work in Peronist Argentina.

Abstract:
The Introduction defines migrant marketplaces, the book’s theoretical framework, as urban spaces characterized by material and imagined transnational linkages between mobile people and goods. As one of the most mobile ethnic groups during the age of mass migration, Italians in the United States and Argentina illuminate the historical formation of migrant marketplaces. It situates the book within the fields of transnational and comparative migration history, gender and food history, and the history of globalization. The introduction contends that Italian-language commercial newspapers, including La Patria degli Italiani in Buenos Aires, Il Progresso Italo-Americano in New York and publications of Italian Chambers of Commerce in these two cities, make an examination of migrant marketplaces possible because they ground global migratory and commercial flows in specific cities.
