Arginine biosynthetic genes from Campylobacter jejuni TGH9011 were cloned by functional complementation of the respective Escherichia coli arginine biosynthetic mutants. By cross-complementation analyses, the first four steps of arginine biosynthesis were shown to be closely linked on the genome. Two additional clones complementing the first (ArgA) and fifth (ArgE) steps in arginine biosynthesis were obtained. Neither recombinant showed linkage to

Abstract:
The chapter addresses compositional strategies in works by Arvo Pärt unifying his different creative periods. The impetus of early Flemish polyphony, which is present in the Symphony No. 3 (1971) and in the first tintinnabuli pieces (1976) is predicted in some of his earliest compositions: Pärt sought equality between the horizontal and vertical dimensions and the maximal structural reduction of composition since his serial works in 1963. The other focus of this chapter is on the specific relation of verbal text and music. The similar mathematical method for structuring music around the accents and number of syllables in words, such as is common in Pärt’s text-based tintinnabuli compositions, is difficult to find in any other examples of composed music, but the connection is prevalent in liturgical chanting. One parallel comes from Conrad Beissel (1691–1768)—the founder of a pietistic community in Pennsylvania and the author of a singular system of harmony for his hymns.

Abstract:
Pärt is renowned for his use of silence; however, apart from the acknowledgement of its frequency in his work and its structural and spiritual efficacy, the subject has not been explored in detail. This essay analyzes the spectrum of silences in Pärt’s music first by providing a taxonomy of use by position and length; second, by providing theological explanation using especially the concepts of hesychasm and kenosis; and third, by tackling the problems of performance and notation of silence using examples from works representative of different periods and genres from his oeuvre. Finally, it resituates silence by referring to essays by Susan Sontag and Aldous Huxley which confirm that in Pärt’s aesthetic, where words and music fail, silence expresses the ineffable.

A 1978 programme lists their concert order as: In the 1978 Tallinn Festival of Old and New Music they formed the first half of a concert the second half of which was a performance (using voices and instruments) of Dufay’s il1issa L ‘Homme Arme by Hortus Musicus. Abstract:
Abstract In earlier chapters the discussion of individual works followed approximately their chronological order of composition, as this usefully portrayed the evolution of Part’s musical language. By the time he arrived in the West, Part had consolidated the tintinnabuli style, so each new work appeared as a fresh manifestation of this strongly centred vision. Each work has a very specific identity, certainly, often using tintinnabuli principles in a manner unique to that work, but to discuss this later music in chronological order would imply that there has continued to be a strong linear development far more than is really the case. I make this observation in a qualified manner, because in certain respects the tintinnabuli style has grown, but this is less a case of development from one point to the next, and more one of expansion of a central concept. I do not mean to imply that Part has stood still, but rather that he has moved around ‘within’ tintinnabuli, stretching certain elements in different ways perhaps, but always able to return (one feels) to the basic tintinnabuli language at a moment’s notice.

Abstract:
Pärt’s music for film, although a major component of his Soviet-era output, has received little critical attention. This chapter makes the case for studying it. Following a general overview and tabulation of Pärt’s film scores, the chapter identifies (and challenges) three main reasons why Anglo-American Pärt scholars, in particular, have consistently declined to engage with these scores: Pärt’s own attitude, Alexei Yurchak’s “binary socialism,” and a habit of partitioning Pärt’s music into discrete periods. Through a series of case studies, the chapter then illustrates the extent to which film work was a platform for Pärt’s technical development throughout his Soviet years—in Pärt’s own words, a “creative laboratory” facilitating creative flow between different spheres of compositional activity. The case studies yield both direct and indirect connections to Pärt’s tintinnabuli works, demonstrating that critical narratives of tintinnabuli will stand incomplete for as long as they ignore the film output.

Abstract:
The Northwest Tropical Atlantic Station (NTAS) was established to address the need for accurate air-sea flux estimates and upper ocean measurements in a region with strong sea surface temperature anomalies and the likelihood of significant local air–sea interaction on interannual to decadal timescales. The approach is to maintain a surface mooring outfitted for meteorological and oceanographic measurements at a site near 15°N, 51°W by successive mooring turnarounds. These observations are used to investigate air–sea interaction processes related to climate variability. The NTAS Ocean Reference

The “Novel streaming potential (SP) and thermal sensor techniques for monitoring water and nutrient fluxes in the vadose zone” project ended Oct. 30, 2015, after an extension to complete travel and intellectual exchange of ideas and sensors. A significant component of this project was the development and testing of the Penta-needle Heat Pulse Probe (PHPP) in addition to testing of the streaming potential concept, both aimed at soil water flux determination. The PHPP was successfully completed and shown to provide soil water flux estimates down to 1 cm day⁻¹ with altered heat input and timing a

Background to the topic: In previous works we have shown that Arabidopsis and tomato over-expressing H+-pyrophosphatase show increased tolerance to drought imposed by withholding irrigation of young plants in pots (Park et al. 2005). In addition, young tobacco plants over-expressing fatty acid desaturase 3 (OEX-FAD3) also showed increasing tolerance to drought stress (Zhang et al 2005), and similarly OEX-FAD3 young tomato plants (unpublished data from ARO), hence raising the possibility that pyramiding the two could further improve drought tolerance in tomato. Based on these findings the speci
