Abstract:
Eric Salem’s “Object and Οὐσία‎: Harman and Aristotle on the Being of Things” is the last encounter with Aristotelian philosophy. Salem shows that Graham Harman aims to revive realism by putting objects back at the center of metaphysical inquiry. Harman traces his own thinking back to Aristotle, whom he considers to be the first object-oriented philosopher. Yet Harman, by rejecting the ontological importance of nature, universalizing intentionality to all kinds of object-object relations, and defending the reality of objects that Aristotle would not consider to be genuine οὐσίαι‎, claims to pr

Abstract:
Aristotle’s conception of body at the heart of this study is the notion of a three‐dimensionally extended and continuous magnitude bounded by surfaces. This notion is distinct from the notion of a physical substance. Substances have bodies: they are extended, their parts are continuous with each other, and they have boundaries which demarcate them from their surroundings. It is argued that body has a pivotal role in Aristotle’s natural philosophy. A theory of bodies can be compared to Aristotle’s account of central concepts for natural science, such as motion, place, and time which are discuss

Abstract:
Spinoza’s guiding commitment to the thesis that nothing exists or occurs outside of the scope of nature and its necessary laws makes him one of the great seventeenth-century exemplars of both philosophical naturalism and explanatory rationalism. Nature and Necessity in Spinoza’s Philosophy brings together for the first time eighteen articles by Don Garrett on Spinoza’s philosophy, ranging over the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, ethics, and political philosophy. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive analysis of Spinoza’s theories of substance, thought and extens

Abstract:
The Introduction briefly lays the groundwork for the main project of Form, Matter, Substance: to defend a hylomorphic analysis of concrete particular objects. According to Aristotle’s doctrine of hylomorphism, entities are in some sense compounds of matter (hulē) and form (morphē or eidos). Since Aristotle introduced this doctrine in the context of his analysis of change in Physics I, it has found wide application throughout the history of philosophy and across many different subdisciplines of philosophy. The Introduction briefly summarizes each of the chapters contained in this book and indic
