Abstract:
Potato cultivation is mainly influenced by the type of fertilisers used, the dosage of mineral or organic fertilisers applied based on the soil nutrient supply and texture of the soil. The potato’s particularities in growing stolons and tubers in the soil, the superficial root system, reltively smaller when compared to the above-ground part, make the plant’s soil condition requirements different from other crops. The purpose of these experiments was to determine the nutrient content in the soil, in order to accurately determine the macro- and micro-element requirements, decided before starting the cultivation, as they are highly important in order to obtain a good yield. In order to monitor the soil nutrient supply, soil samples were taken at a depth of 0-20 and 20-40 cm for ten different varieties, i.e. Arizona, Esmee, Riviera, Red Lady, Carrera, Jelly, Red Fantasy, Levantina, Bellarosa and Luna Rosa, and based on them the ph values, the humus, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and mobile form (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) content were established. Soil analysis is extremely important before starting the cultivation, because it helps farmers determine whether the type of soil is suitable for the plants to be grown and to determine an adequate fertilisation plan.

"METHODOLOGICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EFFECTIVE APPLICATION OF GLOBODERA-RESISTANT POTATO VARIETIES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST GOLDEN POTATO NEMATODE IN PERSONAL AUXILIARY FARMS." Abstract:
The decisive link in the system of comprehensive measures to contol the golden potato nematode is the use of globodera-resistant varieties and hybrids of potatoes. Before recommending any globodera-resistant potato variety for private household plots, it is necessary to carry out a comparative assessment of varieties in the globoderosis focus. This purpose is served by demonstration experiments that allow us to identify the positive and negative aspects of varieties and clearly show agricultural specialists and the population the advantages of nematode-resistant varieties. Effectively reduced the number of golden potato nematodes in the soil (by more than 60%) globodera-resistant varieties (Zhukovsky early, Impala, Santa, Scarb, Lady Rosetta, Picasso, Riviera, Arizona, etc.) with a powerful and branched root system when grown on a fertile, light in texture soil with the introduction of mineral and organic fertilizers, sufficient supply of soil moisture during May and June. Their cultivation led to a decrease in the incidence of globoderosis and, accordingly, an increase in potato yield. In order to increase the efficiency of soil disinfection with the help of globodera-resistant varieties and to obtain the optimal potato yield in private household plots, it is necessary to take the following measures: 1. In autumn – autumn plowing to the depth of the arable layer. In spring – cultivation to a depth of 12–14 cm with simultaneous harrowing. 2. It is recommended to cultivate potatoes in an anti-nematode crop rotation or fruit change no earlier than the third or fourth crop. The effectiveness of nematode-resistant varieties increases with the use of organic and full dose of nitrogen fertilizers. 3. To activate the activity of predatory, parasitic fungi and other antagonists of potato nematodes, it is necessary to apply organic fertilizers (manure, peat, compost) to the soil of potato plantings.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to systematically examine the practice behaviors of Pat Summitt, the winningest collegiate basketball coach in NCAA Division I history. Throughout the 2004–05 season, Summitt’s verbal and nonverbal behaviors were video recorded during six practices. A total of 3,296 behaviors were observed and coded using the Arizona State University Observation Instrument (Lacy & Darst, 1984). Results indicated that 55% (n = 1810) of Summitt’s behaviors were directed toward the team, whereas 45% (n = 1,486) were directed toward individual players. The most frequent behavior was instruction (48%, n = 1,586) followed by praise (14.5%, n = 478) and hustle (10.7%, n = 351). Contrary to predictions, no differences were found in the quantity or quality of the coaching behaviors that Summitt directed toward high and low expectancy players.

Mendelson, Jaclyn Haley, and Jaclyn Haley Mendelson. "Food Justice Policy and the UNESCO City of Gastronomy: How the Designation Can Lay a Positive Foundation for the Future of the Food System of Tucson, Arizona." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625098.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the present food situation in Tucson, AZ and the implications for the city’s December 2015 UNESCO International City of Gastronomy designation. Through qualitative research and feminist methodologies, this thesis raises the voices of leaders within the Tucson food system to gain deeper insight into how to work towards a more socially just food system, and why this is important. In the hope that this thesis can be used as an advocacy tool for policy-makers and grassroots leadership, the topics addressed cover food justice and security through representation for the underrepresented, culturally significant food access, and long-term solutions. By understanding how the local government has made space for the designation, this thesis provides ideas that the local government should encompass in order to move forward in allowing the designation to positively impact the Tucson food system and the groups it currently inequitably affects.

"Comparison of the Original Operetta Arizona Lady, by Emmerich Kálmán, with its 2015 Adaptation Performed by Arizona Opera." Doctoral diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53809.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Emmerich Kálmán (1882-1953) was a leading composer during the Silver Age of Viennese operetta. His final work, Arizona Lady (1954), premiered posthumously, on Bavarian Radio, January 1, 1954. The stage premiere followed on February 14, 1954, at the Stadttheater in Bern, Switzerland. It is his only operetta that is set entirely in the United States, in Tucson, Arizona. Arizona Opera commissioned and produced a new adaptation of Arizona Lady, which was performed in October 2015, in both Tucson, Arizona, and Phoenix, Arizona. The libretto was heavily revised, as well as translated, primarily into English with some sections in Spanish and German. Through comparison of the original and adaptation, this study examines the artistic decisions regarding which materials, both musical and dramatic, were kept, removed, or added, as well as the rationale behind those decisions. The changes reflect differences between an Arizonan audience in 2015 and the European audience of the early 1950s. These differences include ideas of geographical identity from a native versus a foreign perspective; tolerance for nationalistic or racial stereotypes; cultural norms for gender and multiculturalism; and cultural or political agendas. Comparisons are made using the published piano/vocal score for the original version, the unpublished piano/vocal score for the adaptation, archival performance video of the Arizona Opera performance, and the compact disc recording of the 1954 radio broadcast premiere.

Abstract:
Incarcerated Christians frequently thanked God for giving them the strength to endure the incarceration and developed a variety of faith communities to provide additional support. The focus of Chapter Four turns away from church leaders to examine how lay (non-ordained) Christians experienced camp life. Buddhists joined Protestants and Catholics to organize interfaith memorial services for Nikkei soldiers killed in action, while pacifists and others resisted the military draft. This chapter expands the book’s focus to highlight Christian youth culture at a camp in Arizona and the hardships at Tule Lake, where incarcerees attacked Japanese Christians for cooperating with camp officials. The roots of Asian American theologies began growing in the camps in response to this rejection and suffering.

Abstract:
The mochilla lay beside the migrant trail, an abandoned black daypack still heavy with goods. The Border Patrol agent carried it to the shelter of a corner of rocks, where no one could spot him while he searched it. He dug through the contents. There was a package of refried beans in gaudy plastic, a bag of instant oatmeal, fruit punch in a bottle too small to slake a serious thirst, and other convenience food. Also a half-pound or more of white grains in a punctured bag; the agent wet a finger and tasted: only sugar. Then he heard voices approaching and scrambled up the slope to hide in the brush. There were three of them: a rangy young man with a shadowy face in the lead, an older guy in a ball cap, and a pretty young woman with raven hair behind. They were Americans, not migrants or narcos. Their skin, their clothes, even their posture gave them away. They were too relaxed, too careless to be anything else. The agent stepped out from his hiding place. They slowed but did not stop. “You all out hiking?” “Yep,” said the young man with the shadowy face. “Where you from?” “Tucson,” came the clipped reply. Then the hikers, unsmiling and eyes straight ahead, passed him at a fast clip, the chill of the encounter resisting the afternoon heat, the desert absorbing the silence. The hikers had come from the direction of the Rat’s Nest, a maze of drainages half a dozen miles above the Line, and they disappeared toward Apache Pass—not the famous Apache Pass in the Chiricahua Mountains in eastern Arizona, but a lesser pass on the shoulder of Bartolo Mountain, well south of Tucson and only nine or ten miles north of Mexico. The agent knew they weren’t out for a hike. No one comes just to hike in the contorted and contested, bone-dry mountains along this stretch of the border. Everyone has a purpose. They come to smuggle or to be smuggled. They come to scurry in moonlight and to drag themselves under the blaze of the sun across dozens of miles of steep shadeless rock.
