Abstract:

Arkham Asylum is home to some of popular culture's most notorious super villains. The neglect and inadequate care these villains receive mirrors a real-world context where mental illness is surrounded by stigma, misunderstanding, and poor rehabilitation rates. This study explores the less glossy niches between the action-packed button-mashing on the surface of a popular Batman video game Batman: Arkham Asylum. By pulling back the curtain over the routine treatment of Arkham Asylum's patients (also known as inmates), it presents a set of good practices for improving their care through more effective communication. Recorded audio interviews from the video game constitutes the foundation for this set of good practices tailored to the needs of the fictional facility. Narrative inquiry is used to pull these recommendations from the data. Based on narrative elements found in the data, this study recommends an empathy-driven and preventative approach to treating Gotham's criminally insane population.

Abstract:

The action-adventure video games Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009) and Batman: Arkham City (2011) draw on familiar comic book narratives, themes and characters to situate players in a world of participatory violence, crime and madness. In the first game, the player-as-Batman is situated in Arkham Asylum, a high-security facility for the criminally insane and supervillains that also temporarily houses a general population of prisoners from Blackgate Penitentiary. The elision of criminality and mental illness becomes amplified in the second game with the establishment of Arkham City, a combined facility that conflates asylum and prison, completely dissolving any distinction between crime and madness. We draw on Rafter’s conceptual framework of popular criminology to seriously interrogate the representation of violence, crime and madness in these games. More than simply texts offering popular explanations for crime, the games directly implicate the player in violence enacted upon the bodies of criminals and patients alike. Violence is necessary to move the action of the game forward and evokes a range of emotional responses from players who draw from personal experience and other cultural and media representations as they navigate the game. We argue that while the game celebrates violence and the brutal conditions of incarceration, it also offers possibilities for subversive and critical readings. While working to affirm assumptions about crime and mental illness, the game also provides a visceral and visual critique of excessive punishment by the state as a source of injustice for those deemed mad or bad.

Apesar da sua popularidade e diversidade, os vídeo games são tratados como uma mídia marginal, freqüentemente acusados de serem nocivos e prejudiciais a seus jogadores. Neste artigo tomamos em análise o jogo Batman: Arkham Asylum e questionamos quais as divergências que o encontro com o vídeo game e os problemas que ele propõe produzem no processo da cognição. Assumimos uma perspectiva inventiva da cognição, entendendo-a como um processo onde a mesma se diferencia constantemente de si mesma, criando com isso múltiplos e inéditos regimes de operação. A análise aponta para uma nova condição de experiência que pode ser agenciada para direções ético-estéticas, se nossos preconceitos não nos paralisarem e se nossa capacidade inventiva assim nos permitir.

Abstract:

The author of the article "The Neurotic Knight. Reminiscing on Grant Morrison's and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum" wishes to present modern reflections on the genesis of one of the most popular comic books about Batman. To this end, he recalls the diegesis of the cultural work, which takes into account the originality of the story, the perception of the graphic novel, as well as directly references the thoughts of the authors, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean. Particular focus is put on the therapeutic function of the comic, a theme which was discussed in the scholarship of i.a. Janina Scarlet. The character of Batman and his antagonists were portrayed in Arkham Asylum in a groundbreaking, very symbolic way, which at the same time imbued the reader with a sense of dread. Thirty years after the publication, the author of the article reminisces on Morrison's and McKean's work, drawing upon modern research methods and pop- cultural references alike.

Apesar de o mercado de jogos de <em>video game</em> ser uma indústria em expansão no Brasil e, devido a isso, as publicadoras entenderem a necessidade da tradução de seus títulos para o nosso idioma, há escassez de literatura sobre tradução audiovisual para jogos. Assim, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar as legendas do jogo <em>Batman: Arkham City</em> sob parâmetros técnicos e linguísticos e sugerir legendas adequadas a esses padrões. O eixo dos parâmetros técnicos leva em conta caracteres por segundo, tempo de permanência da legenda na tela e número de linhas por bloco (Araújo, 2006). O eixo dos parâmetros linguísticos leva em conta as escolhas léxico-semânticas e a divisão dos blocos de sentido (Martinez, 2007; Hilgert, 2011). Finalmente, foram apontadas as perdas decorrentes da falta de padronização e das escolhas lexicais inadequadas realizadas pelo legendador.

Abstract:

This article uses the concept of intermediality to explore four different adaptations, across three different media, of the infamous supervillain the Joker. Independent of the medium representing him, a recurring practice is to have the Joker engage with media technologies. Television, in particular, is often used, as in the cases discussed here: Tim Burton’s film Batman (1989) and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008), the comic book Batman: Death of the Family (2014), and the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009). Understood as media combination, intermedial referencing (Rajewsky (2005) Intermediality, intertextuality, and remediation: A literary perspective on intermediality. Intermédialités 6: 43–64), and through concepts such as contingency and liveness (Doane (2002) The Emergence of Cinematic Time: Modernity, Contingency, the Archive. Cambridge: Harvard University Press), these intermedial moments, by way of emphasizing the materiality and temporality of media, are found to promote immersion while simultaneously causing tension by destabilizing the act of viewing.

Abstract:

Among the abundance of possible readings of Poe’s short story, one of the most intriguing is its treatment as an escape fantasy - the image of the unnamed narrator delirious, flight from the collapsing structure at his back seems almost too fortuitous, and invites questions as to the sole survivor’s relation to “the house of Usher”. As the structure’s suspected sentience could be seen to relegate its occupants to the position of psychological forces and manifest thought-content, the house is transformed into a combination of physical and mental spaces, akin to the twin “prisons” of body and mind which the narrator fantasizes about being freed from. The article examines the (im)possibility of Poe’s narrator’s escape, using Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth as a companion text. Read alongside each other, the two narratives “construct” their “houses” by a superimposition of their characters’ mental landscapes onto the skeleton of physical (textual) space, in order to perform the fantasy of escape from psychological conflict, whether by tearing down the house as in Poe’s tale, or by restoring the externalized order as in the Batman novel.

Abstract:

A student is someone who studies in formal education, in this case, vocational students are expected to be able to gain expertise and skills as a provision to get and open a job. Students must be able to become entrepreneurs with new and innovative products. Vocational High School students can print entrepreneurial candidates after graduating from school so that they can help push the wheels of the national economy. Vocational students can be said to be prospective entrepreneurs, so they need to be equipped with digital business literacy and financial literacy in facing the development of the industrial revolution 4.0. This service activity is aimed at increasing the understanding of prospective entrepreneurs as well as improving skills in utilizing technology and the internet for business (business) in the digital era. The method used is workshop and training. The products produced are creative content from prospective entrepreneurs which can be in the form of vlog videos, promotional videos, and others. In addition, prospective entrepreneurs can also take advantage of the existing marketplace as a means of doing business (marketing). Community service activities have been carried out on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Participants in the activity are class 12 students majoring in accounting from SMK Lebakbarang as many as 47 SMK students. The resource person for the activity was Wahid Wachyu Adi W, M.Si. (Lecturer) and Novendi Arkham M, M. Account. (Lecturer). The form of service activities is a workshop with material about digital business and financial literacy. Participants of service activities can follow well. The attendance rate is 83% until the activity ends. Participants also actively participated during the activity. Participants can carry out group assignments well, namely expressing ideas or business ideas in the digital era. The success of service activities is due to the service team being able to plan well and able to coordinate with collaboration partners intensively.

Abstract:

The genetic structure of three Kazakh sheep breeds was examined by using 12 microsatellite loci. A total of 144 alleles were detected from the 12 STR loci, with a mean value of 12.0. The highest allele diversity was found at the locus CSRD247 (16 alleles). PIC value showed that all studied STR markers are more informative and appropriate for genetic analysis of three Kazakh sheep populations. Beside of INRA006, all markers had high level of genetic variability. As Fixation index shows, the excess of the heterozygosity was observed only in loci MAF065. Obtained number of private alleles in Edilbai, Kazakh Arkhar Merino and Kazakh Fine-wool sheep were 25, 17 and 15 respectively. Genetic diversity was higher in Edilbai population than in other two populations. The genetic variability was lower in Kazakh Arkhar Merino sheep than in the Edilbai and Kazakh Fine-wool sheep breeds. The genetic distance was the largest between Edilbai and Kazakh Arkhar Merinos. Also, the moderate differentiation was observed between Edilbai and Kazakh Arkhar Merinos.

Abstract:

The developed spring oats varieties should combine potential productivity with resistance to abiotic and biotic environmental factors due to increased adaptability. The purpose of the current study was to develop a new highly productive spring oats variety with a complex of economically valuable traits that are resistant to abiotic and biotic stressors. The current paper has presented a description of the new spring oats variety ‘Arkhan’ (mutika), developed by the Moscow RIA in cooperation with the FSEI “Kotlasskoe” by the method of individual-family selection from a hybrid population obtained from step hybridization of the varieties of different origin. The Competitive Variety Testing of the variety ‘Arkhan’ was carried out in 2013–2016 on the basis of the FSEI “Kotlasskoe” of the Arkhangelsk region, the variety ‘Krechet’ was the standard variety. The grain productivity of the new variety averaged 4.5 t/ha over 4 years, which was significantly larger than that of the standard variety ‘Krechet’ (3.5 t/ha). The average green mass productivity of the variety ‘Arkhan’ was 26.7 t/ha, which on 8.5 t/ha higher than that of the standard variety ‘Krechet’. The variety ‘Arkhan’ is characterized by resistance to head smut, being relatively resistant to crown oats rust. The variety is highly resistant to grain shedding and lodging. According to the best indicators, the new spring oats variety ‘Arkhan’ in 2017 was sent for the study to the State Variety Network of the Russian Federation. According to the results of the State Variety Testing, the variety has been included into the State List of Breeding Achievements approved for use on the territory of the Russian Federation since 2020 (in regions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5).

Abstract:

Abstract. A total of 75 individuals from five sheep populations in Kazakhstan were investigated based on 12 STR (short tandem repeat, also known as microsatellite) markers in order to study their genetic structure and phylogenetic relationship based on genetic distances. These sheep had a high level of genetic diversity. In total, 163 alleles were found in all the populations using 12 microsatellite loci. The mean number of alleles, effective number of alleles, and polymorphism information content (PIC) values per loci were 13.4, 5.9, and 0.78, respectively. Comparing the allelic diversity between the populations, the highest genetic diversity was observed in the Edilbay-1 sheep breed (8.333±0.644), and the lowest parameter was for Kazakh Arkhar-Merino (7.083±0.633). In all populations, there is a deficiency of heterozygosity. The largest genetic diversity was found in loci INRA023 and CSRD247 with 16 alleles, and the smallest polymorphism was noted for the locus D5S2 with 8 alleles. The level of observed heterozygosity was in the range 0.678±0.051 for Kazakh Arkhar-Merino and 0.767±0.047 for Kazakh fat-tailed coarse wool. The expected heterozygosity level range was from 0.702±0.033 for Kazakh Arkhar-Merino to 0.777±0.023 for Edilbay-1. When 12 microsatellite loci are compared, the OarFCB20 locus showed the highest level of genetic variability. Excess of heterozygosity was observed at three loci; MAF065, McM042, and OarFCB20. The highest genetic distance was observed between Kazakh Arkhar-Merino and Edilbay-1, whereas the genetic distance between Edilbay-1 and Edilbay-2 is the smallest using Nei's standard genetic distance. The Edilbay-1 sheep breed possesses the largest genetic diversity among these five populations.

Abstract:

First, this paper presents the algorithm of adaptively regularized kernel-based fuzzy C-means based on membership constraint (G-ARKFCM). Under the idea of competitive learning based on penalizing opponents, a new membership constraint function penalty item is introduced for each sample point in the segmented image, so that the ARKFCM algorithm is no longer limited to the fuzzy index m = 2. Secondly, the multiplicative intrinsic component optimization (MICO) is introduced into G-ARKFCM to obtain the GM-ARKFCM algorithm, which can correct the bias field when segmenting neonatal HIE images. Compared with other algorithms, the GM-ARKFCM algorithm has better segmentation quality and robustness. The GM-ARKFCM algorithm can more completely segment the neonatal ventricles and surrounding white matter and can retain more information of the original image.

In 2018, 21 varieties of spring soft wheat were recommended for cultivation in Tatarstan, with a specific weight of 79.2% in the structure of the harvested area under spring wheat. Determining the degree of resistance to diseases of these varieties allows you to properly plan protective measures throughout the republic. Studies were conducted in 2015-2018 on the experimental fields of Tatar Scientific Research Institute of Agricultural Sciences. Varieties, recommended for cultivation, differ in the degree of field resistance to the main fungal diseases. The Ester and Zlata varieties have the maximum field resistance to powdery mildew (average 7 points), Chelyaba Stepnaya and Tulaykovskaya Nadezhda varities have the minimum (4 points). Most spring wheat varieties are susceptible to the local brown leaf rust population. The following varities remain resistant to leaf brown rust: Tulaykovskaya 10, Ekada 113, Tulaykovskaya 108, Arkhat, Ulyanovskaya 105, Tulaykovskaya Nadezhda. Moreover, the homogeneity of the genetics of most resistant varieties (caused by the resistance gene Lr19) does not allow epiphytoties of leaf brown rust in the future. According to the 2016-2018 studies, the least degree of stem rust damage was observed in the varieties: Tulaykovskaya 10, Ekada 113, Tulaykovskaya 108, Arkhat, Ulyanovskaya 105 and Tulaykovskaya Nadezhda, on average, 5-10%. There are no varieties, which are immune to stem rust. In 2017 in the conditions of the massive development of dark brown spotting, there were no signs of disease on the leaf of Kazanskaya Yubileinaya variety, the resistance of this variety is determined by the Sb1 gene. The maximum susceptibility to dark brown leaf spotting has the Simbirtsit and Idelle varieties. An integrated resistance to the studied diseases have varieties: Ekada 113, Tulaykovskaya 108 and Arkhat.

<p>Modernity as a global phenomenon has been the most driving matter, said<br />those scholars of modernity, that potentially threat the existent of tradition<br />and religion. Both would vanish once the project of secularism accomplishes.<br />However, since the global modernity, whether represented by secular state,<br />nation state, and democracy, failed to fulfil its promises, tradition and religions<br />in general have reemerged to be likely a new device employed by their<br />adherents to express their grievances and discontents. In such regard, recent<br />Islamic movements promoting the slogan of “back to the authentic Islam”<br />can be a better example to examine the relationship between modernity and<br />religion. Accordingly, the paper, based on my field research, would discuss<br />the role of religion in modern era as represented by Darul Arkam, an Islamic<br />spiritual maternity or Tarekat (Thar6iqa, Arabic) in Indonesia after the collapse<br />of Suharto’s military regime in 1998. Originally, the movement of Darul<br />Arkam came into being in Malaysia as a spiritually-social-urban Muslim organization.<br />How did its leaders understand Islam in regard to changing social<br />and political situation and how did they combine economic and religious<br />activities will be the main topics of the paper, together with their views on<br />contemporary issues related to Islam and politics after Soeharto era.</p><p>Modernitas sebagai sebuah fenomena global merupakan faktor paling<br />berpengaruh, demikian para teoritis moderisme menyatakan, terhadap<br />keberadaan tradisi dan agama. Kedua unsur ini akan lenyap seiring dengan<br />dengan keberhasilan yang dicapai oleh proyek sekularisme yang berlangsung<br />secara global. Namun demikian, sejak gerakan modernisme, yang diwakili antara<br />lain oleh konsep negara sekuler, negara bangsa, dan demokrasi, dianggap telah<br />gagal memenuhi janji-janjinya, tradisi dan agama secara umum kembali menjadi<br />media untuk mengungkapkan kekecewaan mereka terhadap kegagalan dan<br />akibat-akibat yang ditimbulkan oleh modernism. Pada situasi ketidak puasaan<br />ini, gereakan-gerakan Islam dewasa ini yang mempropagandakan gagasan<br />“kembali kepada Islam yang otentik” dapat menjadi sebuah contoh yang tepat<br />untuk menganalisa hubungan kekinian anatara modernitas dan agama.<br />Berdasarkan riset lapangan, tulisan ini akan memaparkan peran koumintas<br />agama, yang diwakili oleh organisasi Darul Arkam, sebuah perkumpulan yang<br />diikat oleh rasa persaudaran Muslim atau biasa dikenal dengan tarekat, di Indonesia<br />paska jatuhnya kekuasaan Presidean Soeharto pada 1998. Darul Arkam<br />sendiri merupakan organisasi komunitas Muslim urban yang muncul pertama<br />kali di Malaysia. Bagaimana pemimpin Darul Arkam memahami ajaran Islam<br />dalam situasi sosial-politik yang tengah berubah di Indonesia dan bagaimana<br />mereka menggabungkan antara aktifitas keagamaan dan ekonomi akan menjadi<br />pembahasan pokok tulisan ini, selain respon mereka terhadap isu-isu yang<br />berkembang di era reformasi.</p><p> </p>

The purpose of this research is to describe figurative language of comparison in the collection of poetry Biarkan Jariku Kini yang Mengungkapkannya by Kawe ‘Arkaan which consist of three aspects, they are: proverbs, personification, and depersonification. This research uses descriptive method with content analysis. The primary data of the research is the words which contain figurative language of comparison in the collection of the poetry Biarkan Jariku Kini yang Mengungkapkannya by Kawe ‘Arkaan. Meanwhile the technique of collecting data is library study. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be found that there is figurative language in the collection of poetry Biarkan Jariku Kini yang Mengungkapkannya by Kawe ‘Arkaan. It has three aspects, they are provebs, personification, and depersonification. The result of the analysis shows: (1) 18 expressions of proverbs, (2) 51 expressions of personification, (3) no depersonification. The dominant of figurative language occured is personification.

The recently introduced Kallisto pseudoaligner has radically simplified the quantification of transcripts in RNA-sequencing experiments. We offer cloud-scale RNAseq pipelines Arkas-Quantification, and Arkas-Analysis available within Illumina’s BaseSpace cloud application platform which expedites Kallisto preparatory routines, reliably calculates differential expression, and performs gene-set enrichment of REACTOME pathways. Due to inherit inefficiencies of scale, Illumina's BaseSpace computing platform offers a massively parallel distributive environment improving data management services and data importing. Arkas-Quantification deploys Kallisto for parallel cloud computations and is conveniently integrated downstream from the BaseSpace Sequence Read Archive (SRA) import/conversion application titled SRA Import. Arkas-Analysis annotates the Kallisto results by extracting structured information directly from source FASTA files with per-contig metadata, calculates the differential expression and gene-set enrichment analysis on both coding genes and transcripts. The Arkas cloud pipeline supports ENSEMBL transcriptomes and can be used downstream from the SRA Import facilitating raw sequencing importing, SRA FASTQ conversion, RNA quantification and analysis steps.

AbstractArkaim is the name given to the site of an ancient town in the Southern Urals, dated to the 17th–16th centuries BC. Discovered in 1987, Arkaim rapidly became more than an archaeological site. It became the focus for an extraordinary congolmeration of ideas linked to ecological and political movements, in particular those of Russian nationalists. Threatened with flooding because of a dam project, Arkaim was made a ‘Museum Reserve’. Soon it became the focus for theories that this was a sacred place and furthermore the home of proto-Slavs. The break-up of the Soviet Union was followed by attempts by Russian nationalists to demonstrate the legitimacy of their domination of the former empire. The article shows how quasi historical claims expanded into myth and fantasy, linked to the emergence of new cults. Arkaim became the city not only of proto Slavs but of Zarathustra and the Aryans too. Such inventions are related to local politics and ethnic tensions as well as to wider Russian nationalism.

O presente artigo tem como intuito analisar a narrativa transmídia do personagem Batman nos jogos eletrônicos e verificar como ocorre o processo de transição entre as hq’s e games na cultura contemporânea. Para tal, será utilizado como objeto de análise a trilogia de Batman Arkham Asylum de 2009, Batman Arkham City de 2011 e Batman Arkham Knight de 2015, submetendo elementos estéticos e narrativos as teorias da Era dos Quadrinhos e do Espírito do Tempo, assim como as percepções sobre a cultura contemporânea e as estratégias comerciais da narrativa transmídia. Por fim, o artigo procura discorrer sobre como tal processo dualógico de influência têm renovado a importância do personagem na cultura contemporânea e também na captação de novos leitores que mantém Batman pertinente mesmo depois de oito décadas após sua criação.

Abstract:

This article discusses a new taxonomy of dubbing synchronies in the Spanish localized version of the video game Batman: Arkham Knight. To do so, the concept of the video game is first reviewed as the most sophisticated example of audiovisual text in terms of its multimodal nature. The article also describes how the message is conveyed through the different communication channels that form a part of its semiotic structure. Next, the research approach proposal is presented, based on the multimodal configuration of video games: game situations will be the unit of analysis used in this approach, since they are a basic unit with which to organize the content of a game and they distinguish video games as a unique type of audiovisual text. These game situations are used to analyse the specific features of dubbing and types of synchrony. Finally, some results are offered to confirm that the taxonomy of dubbing in video games discussed here applies to this particular case.
