Full textThe architectural decoration of ancient Arles concerns all lapidary decorated architectural elements of Ancient Arelate. Taking into account the largest number of blocks allowed us to propose a synthesis of the stylistic and chronological evolution of Arles ornamentation - a frieze which runs from the first triumvirate to the fifth century AD - and restitution of architectural development of the monumental center of Arles. The study focuses on two main analytical axes, canonical ornaments and architectural components. For these analyses, the primary objective was to fix a number of historical milestones that will serve as a reference for dating Narbonese architectural elements. Our reasoning and methods used were intended to respond to a problem that was the place of Arles in Narbonese Gaul, including the definition or the accuracy of the movement of canonicals ornaments and relationships maintained with Rome. Arelate has all the characteristics of a city having succeeded in the implementation of the "Roman models", adapted to its town planning and its topography. Rome and Augustus in particular have left their mark on the city by the mutations that they fostered and encouraged, unless they simply decided on them. These early developments were followed, over the years, by achievements confirming the role of the colony in a process of Romanization passing largely by the architecture and the development of its ornamentation

Full textThe urban river spaces in the lower Rhône valley are a special case in the international waterfront redevelopment process that began during the sixties. There has been no significant restructuring of Rhône riverfronts downstream of Lyon in spite of their urbanistic potential and the wishes expressed by some local authorities. The urban heritage of the Rhône riverbanks is ossified or neglected and sometimes completely abandoned. This lack of action concerning the waterfronts reflects the paradoxical situation concerning the Rhône valley: a combination of inert towns and an imposing river that has been highly developed. It also shows that waterfront redevelopment is neither a systematic nor a universal process. The marginalization of these river-banks is due to factors related to both the hydrosystem and the social system. The hydrology of the river acts as a constraint on urban planning, and the Rhône riverfronts also suffer from problems caused by deficiencies in the various bodies involved and from the heavy road infrastructures built on the river-banks. A complex administrative and legislative framework further hampers the urban redevelopment of the river spaces.Poor management of these riverfront spaces combines with failures in flood risk policies. Cities struggle to apply safety politics because the Rhône presents a specific and changing risk and because of the passivity of the urban actors. However, as the risk has become a political issue, it has turned out to be a driving force behind the development of the Rhône riverbank area. An integrated sustainable development project named “Plan Rhône” aims at coordinating risk management in the whole of the river basin, and is the first step in territorial renewal. The towns are not yet involved in this project

Full textLong thought of as a time of social upheaval, Late Antiquity seems rather to have been a period of wide-ranging social change encompassing a mixture of influences that pose many problems for study of the period. These multiple influences affect funeral treatments of the period and studying them requires consideration of multiple lines of evidence: historical, archaeological, anthropological, and biological. We chose this multidisciplinary approach in the study of urban and peri-urban burial sites of the antic cities of Vienne and Arles from the 3rd century to the 6th century A.D.Our study protocol allows us to observe the biological characteristics of samples simultaneously to taphonomic data, spatial organization within and between sites, but also topography data or historical archives. This innovative approach, implementing original methodological tools, is relevant. It highlighted the changes in the management and the representation of the dead and Death in Late Antiquity. The burial sites show very different profiles depending on the time period and we can see specificities in the necropolis of the 4th century,” intermediate” structures where many practices of the High Empire are still used, before the establishment of new Christian structures in different places of the city, which have moved again the necropolises locations

Full textThis thesis is an analysis of the identity of the descendents of formely colonized Algerians. First we investigate how the colonized indigenous people became either immigrants or harkis once the moved to France. Then, after having studied how the political reality affects the subsequent generational development of both immigrants and harkis, we discuss the identifying traits of the different heritages. The descendants of the immigrants and those of the harkis not only identify them-selves with those two groups, but also have contradictory views of history. Nevertheless, they intermingle, and even intermarry. Immigrants and harkis in close relationships must come to terms with their different heritage in order to overcome their conflicting interpretations of their shared history. We conclude debating if such a shared history can be written
