Full textThe architectural decoration of ancient Arles concerns all lapidary decorated architectural elements of Ancient Arelate. Taking into account the largest number of blocks allowed us to propose a synthesis of the stylistic and chronological evolution of Arles ornamentation - a frieze which runs from the first triumvirate to the fifth century AD - and restitution of architectural development of the monumental center of Arles. The study focuses on two main analytical axes, canonical ornaments and architectural components. For these analyses, the primary objective was to fix a number of historical milestones that will serve as a reference for dating Narbonese architectural elements. Our reasoning and methods used were intended to respond to a problem that was the place of Arles in Narbonese Gaul, including the definition or the accuracy of the movement of canonicals ornaments and relationships maintained with Rome. Arelate has all the characteristics of a city having succeeded in the implementation of the "Roman models", adapted to its town planning and its topography. Rome and Augustus in particular have left their mark on the city by the mutations that they fostered and encouraged, unless they simply decided on them. These early developments were followed, over the years, by achievements confirming the role of the colony in a process of Romanization passing largely by the architecture and the development of its ornamentation

Full textThe urban river spaces in the lower Rhône valley are a special case in the international waterfront redevelopment process that began during the sixties. There has been no significant restructuring of Rhône riverfronts downstream of Lyon in spite of their urbanistic potential and the wishes expressed by some local authorities. The urban heritage of the Rhône riverbanks is ossified or neglected and sometimes completely abandoned. This lack of action concerning the waterfronts reflects the paradoxical situation concerning the Rhône valley: a combination of inert towns and an imposing river that has been highly developed. It also shows that waterfront redevelopment is neither a systematic nor a universal process. The marginalization of these river-banks is due to factors related to both the hydrosystem and the social system. The hydrology of the river acts as a constraint on urban planning, and the Rhône riverfronts also suffer from problems caused by deficiencies in the various bodies involved and from the heavy road infrastructures built on the river-banks. A complex administrative and legislative framework further hampers the urban redevelopment of the river spaces.Poor management of these riverfront spaces combines with failures in flood risk policies. Cities struggle to apply safety politics because the Rhône presents a specific and changing risk and because of the passivity of the urban actors. However, as the risk has become a political issue, it has turned out to be a driving force behind the development of the Rhône riverbank area. An integrated sustainable development project named “Plan Rhône” aims at coordinating risk management in the whole of the river basin, and is the first step in territorial renewal. The towns are not yet involved in this project

Full textLong thought of as a time of social upheaval, Late Antiquity seems rather to have been a period of wide-ranging social change encompassing a mixture of influences that pose many problems for study of the period. These multiple influences affect funeral treatments of the period and studying them requires consideration of multiple lines of evidence: historical, archaeological, anthropological, and biological. We chose this multidisciplinary approach in the study of urban and peri-urban burial sites of the antic cities of Vienne and Arles from the 3rd century to the 6th century A.D.Our study protocol allows us to observe the biological characteristics of samples simultaneously to taphonomic data, spatial organization within and between sites, but also topography data or historical archives. This innovative approach, implementing original methodological tools, is relevant. It highlighted the changes in the management and the representation of the dead and Death in Late Antiquity. The burial sites show very different profiles depending on the time period and we can see specificities in the necropolis of the 4th century,” intermediate” structures where many practices of the High Empire are still used, before the establishment of new Christian structures in different places of the city, which have moved again the necropolises locations

Full textThis thesis is an analysis of the identity of the descendents of formely colonized Algerians. First we investigate how the colonized indigenous people became either immigrants or harkis once the moved to France. Then, after having studied how the political reality affects the subsequent generational development of both immigrants and harkis, we discuss the identifying traits of the different heritages. The descendants of the immigrants and those of the harkis not only identify them-selves with those two groups, but also have contradictory views of history. Nevertheless, they intermingle, and even intermarry. Immigrants and harkis in close relationships must come to terms with their different heritage in order to overcome their conflicting interpretations of their shared history. We conclude debating if such a shared history can be written

Full textArles, roman right colony, inherited the control of the river the Rhône, after Pompei’s defeat against Cesar, important delivery route of any kind of supply coming from the Mediterranean area. Trading business increasing Arles welcomed a lot of navicularii to manage it. And also the growing native population helped Arles to become a privilege actor. Through the monument the great city of Arles showed coloured marbles on the wall and pavement. This type of raw material was a symbol of power and wealth which was diffused in every province of the empire. In this context, we will study the use and the supply of the marble in Arles through terrestrial archaeological sites and elements discovered in the river Rhone.Concerning this, we will study every pieces of coloured marble found in the high Roman Empire and late Antiquity period. For every sites we will determined the distribution and the proportion as well as the different ways they were shaped. Then we will analyse chronologically the use of these elements in the “domus” decoration and in public building.Last but not least we will link it together with the routing of the supplier in the Rhône valley at the Roman Empire period

Full textThe Rhône-Rhin axis is during the antiquity the theatre of an intense commercial activity, facilitated by a large use of many navigable waterways which that irrigate this vast space. The foundation, shortly after the middle of the 1st c. BC, of the roman colonies of Arles and Lyon, at the both extremities of the Rhone valley, is the prelude to the establishment, at the time of Augustus, of a new economic system, destined to the supply of the armies based at the Germanic limes, which will lead a considerable increase of the commercial traffics. In the following time, during several centuries, these both port urban centers will polarize the long-distance exchanges, as shown particularly by the epigraphic data. More recently, the development of ceramology has allowed a complementary approach to the trade, based on the study of his material remains. This discipline offers the possibility to assess the nature of the exchanged products, their provenances and their relative proportions, just as to clarify the evolutions of these different characteristics in time.In Lyon, the last three decades have been marked by a considerable expansion of the archeological researches, thanks to which an extensive ceramological documentation on the whole roman period is now available. On the other side, in Arles, several important excavations have given these last years some very rich levels of harbor and urban rubbish dumps of which study, conducted within the framework of this thesis, complete considerably the knowledge on the arlesian material features. Moreover, the recent discovery, off the coast of the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, of one of the outer harbour of the city offers an interesting complementary documentation. On the basis of the material data from both big ports of Arles and Lyon, punctually completed by which of them of the others sites of the Rhône valley, it has been possible to make a vast diachronic synthesis on the rhodanian trade, taking into account as well the products transported in amphorae as the ceramic dishes. This large knowledge assessment allows following the developments of the trade on this axis between the 1st century BC and the 7th century AD, but also to identify several persistent gaps and to suggest some research leads

Full textA thorough architectural study of the cathedrals of saint-paul-troischateaux and arles reveals the complex evolution of their construction and a direct relationship that linked the former to the latter edifice. Thus, the combined relative chronology of both chruches provides important clues to the evolution of provencal romanesque architecture in general. The outstanding construction of saint-trophime influenced several other churches more or less directly related by their structure, construction and decoration; thus, saint-trophime, saint-paul and the related aisled nave churches, analyzed in a series of monographic studies (cruas abbey church, la garde-adhemar, cathedrals of orange and vaison-la-romaine, saint-honorat-des-aliscamps and saint-blaise in arles, saint-paul-de-mausole, the major of marseille and notre-dame-du-chateau at saint-etienne-du-gres), offer a solid base for further general investigations, leading to a more thorough understanding of the development of romanesque church building in provence from the middle of the eleventh to the first half of the thirteenth century

Full textThe aim of this research is the notion of asceticism and its application with Caesarius of Arles, monk-bishop of the VIth century. For him, this requirement for hardship in the daily life of the people appears to represent a prerequisite for the return to faith among the congregation he addresses. It is through hardship that Caesarius wishes to divert the most ordinary people from any danger conveyed by pagan behaviour, but he does, however, not forget charity. His notion of governance is democratic; he fights abuse and is protective and kind towards the poor. The thesis examines these questions using Sermons to people but also Sermons to monks and Monastic works in order to discover whether the vocabulary used is identical and if for Caesarius, the reference to the good Christian is the monk indeed. This will highlight the bishop of Arles’ innovating character for Church life as, according to him, only a modest lifestyle will enable everyone to save one’s soul but also comply with the message of Christ

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to highlight the nature and intensity of cultural interactions during the first Iron age in Western Provence, between indigenous communities and their Mediterranean interlocutors. Past the introductory chapter, the first part comprises our three documentary records: the enclos Saint-Césaire (Arles), le Castelet (Fontvieille) and the sondage MN11 of Saint-Blaise (Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts). Each deposit is placed in its environmental and historiographical context before the typo-chronological study of the ceramics. Thus the phasing and ceramic facies are associated in the purpose to proceed to our first conclusions. The second part extends the analytical framework with the cross-cutting issues allowing us to consider the space considered according to different points of view based on trade dynamics and highlighting any markers of contact phenomena between these different cultures. The consideration of the data allows us to reintroduce the notion of 'man' and its relationship to the Other during the first age of the Provençal early Iron age

Full textThe thesis compares the epigraphical documentation of port occupations of six Mediterranean cities (Aquileia, Ostia-Portus, Arles, Lyon, Narbonne, Hispalis). The first part studies the latin words concerning port occupations to determine the role of the professionals. This first part must be viewed in addition to the documentary corpus. The second part studies the social hierarchy inside port occupations and aims to identify elements of identity and social cohesion inside the port. Finally, the last part estimates the place of port professionals in local economy and inside the elites. The link with other cities is also considered

Full textThis study examine Caesarius of Arles's sixth-century work " Sermons au peule ". The analysis of this corpus provides evidence for the importance of the act of preaching in the Bishop of Arles's pastoral writings. It also shows the relatively small role of preaching in Provence in those times. Through his own example, through the expression of his opinions in provencal councils and through his workshop of scribes which widely spread his writings, Caesarius of Arles broke with tradition by restoring the importance of preaching. This attention to the Word was linked to a spiritual view of the world and a lifestyle that came from his monastic training. In all his writings it is stressed : the fight against the remains of paganism, the importance of the reading of the Holy Scriptures, the strict rules of behaviour in one's private life, help for the poor, dedication to the afterlife. His messages are dominated by an obsession with death and Divine Judgement. Even though his preaching attempted to arouse salutary fear in his audience, Caesarius of Arles was convinced that the believer had the means to participate in his salvation. This will to convey the Word to all of his believers, even those who were illiterate, led him to choose rusticitas, a level of language which seems to be connected to the monastic world

Full textThe history of the region as well as the grand stages of the Roman conquest are known, but this thesis' aim is to understand what was the every day life of the population of Basse Provence around the era change. Ceramics are an excellent tool to answer this kind of problematic. All the containers used for the preparation, the service and consumption of food have been taking into account. The study of ceramics conducts to the determination of a cultural feature allowing a reflection on natives' traditions, Italics' influences and the degree of integration of the Romanisation process on each of the sites studied. These, were chosen according to their history (native site, Roman colony, ...) and according to their position in relation to commercial and travel routes in Basse Provence. The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the study of Gallic's populations and the integration process of the Roman model in the society. But also to answer cultural problems concerning the stages of adoption of the Roman's way of life by the Gallic. This thesis will allow a reflection on the spatial position of the cities that have more or less rapidly integrated the Roman model. This type of approach, proposing a cultural comparison of different sites of our region, is necessary because it has not yet been undertaken

Full textThis work is an use-wear analysis of the upper sequence of Grotte Mandrin in Mediterranean France (from the 55th to 43rd millennium). In this sequence, the Neronian level of Grotte Mandrin appears as an anomaly, both from a technical and a functional perspective. Its profusion of points and their not only microlithic but also standardized character prompts reflection on the purpose of these productions. What is the meaning of this signature, combining standardization and real microlithization within a single unit of this vast archaeological sequence? Through a functional study specifically oriented toward research, determination and understanding of the associations of impact scars, a method of approach, an impact study, is presented here, and constructed from a systematic, original experiment. An impactological study of the Mandrin E points reveals that at least 15.5% of them were used as weapons. In the absence of any other criteria revealing other functions, and in view of the exceptionally high rate of impacted pieces, we must consider whether all of these small objects belong directly and exclusively to the sphere of armaments. The extreme reduction of these micro- and nanopoints results in a particularly weak inert weight that can only be compensated for by a propulsion system with very high kinetic energy. Attention has therefore been focused on the mode of propulsion used to make these very small, sometimes less than a centimeter, points effective and efficient. The results lead to the conclusion that only a propulsion system such as the bow would be able to offset the low kinetic energy of all of these small impacted elements discovered at Mandrin E

Full textFirearms ownership by civilians is a is a very widespread behaviour. Public authorities, citizens and commentators have shown a certain disinterest about the question of this liberty. The evolution of these regulations, stemming from the pre-war years, has been limiting the possibility to acquire and to be in possession of firearms, while creating a very complex lawful situation. It would be necessary to reform the texts which govern this subject, in order to go back to a strict respect of citizen's rights and to only prevent the abuse of these materials

Full textDespite the first excavation began in 1880 and after 130 years of research, the Gravetian of Brasempouy appear from now on in a unified form, thaks to the new lighting that we propose by the internal analysis of this site and through comparisons established with other contexts, in particular the Pyrenean cave of Isturitz. By revealing its true nature formely slit of housing-santuary, the gravetian occupation of Brassempouy offers at the same time one of the most eloquent archaeological context of Upper Paleolithic arguing the existence of a social system based on a binary antagonism with, on the one had, the female statuettes, on the other hand, the highly invested weapons. The deposit of the bottom of the "grotte du Pape" (sector GG2), replaced in his local context, regional then continental, form to date, within the framework of Gravetian, the strongest archeological argument which feed sociological reflexions where hunting weapons find a new place, and whose lethal imaginary associated to them comes to counterbalance the power of the henceforth classic "female fertility mythology" unit in a more dualistic approach of the wild thought. Thus, the site of Brassempouy bring us to reconsider scale and application modality of gravetian unit whose mechanism associates at the same time way of housing, social rules, economy and ideology

Full textThe A4 / V2 rocket and the Fi 103 / V1 flying bomb were developed at the end of 1942, at the time when the Allies began defeating the Axis Powers and when the RAF began to bombard Germany cities. These raids fed a desire for revenge against England, which these weapons made possible. From 1943 to 1945, because of the choice of the target and the range of the rockets, France and the French found themselves caught in the middle of the battle that the Germans and the Allies fought over the implementing of the V weapons. The French helped each side. They helped the Germans, whether under constraint or as volunteers, economically, socially and militarily, to build their launch ramps and to produce their weapons. On the other hand, other French fought on the side of the Allies to make the German plan fail. The French Resistance, in the front lines, informed secret services based in London, including the BCRA, providing information concerning the sites and the description of the arms. The sites were then bombarded by the RAF, which was supported by the USAAF and the FAFL. Although these attacks slowed the use of the V weapons, they also destroyed the surrounding countryside. After the D-Day, the Germans succeeded in firing their rockets. The French bases were then even more intensively bombed until the allied troops captured them at the end of the summer. Their inspection, carried out sometimes with French interested by this new technology, as well as the discovery of the rockets themselves, provided the technical basis of modern rocket science, which in turn led to the exploration of outer space

Full textThe notion of defence rights is universally shared and applied by all the stakeholders in the criminal case whatever the judicial system may be. However, difficulties in interpreting it remain. The systemic exam of rights in the framework of adversarial proceedings and equality of arms aims at defining the defence rights, explaining how they should apply as part of a criminal case, and evaluating their long term development. During the trial, rights and principles interlace inextricably. They both have common or reserved scopes, they achieve the same result, sometimes different yet, and they share numerous common grounds and differences that let us conclude they are more complementary than opposite. Adversarial proceedings and equality of arms represent two functional tools emphasizing the effectiveness of rights. Not only they help horizontally evaluate the defence rights, i. E. In a quantitative manner during the whole criminal case, but they also help interpret vertically, i. E. In a qualitative manner by measuring their force. If we question the relationships between rights and principles as part of our triptych, the present analysis indicates, on the one hand, that the implementation of the adversarial proceedings et the equality of arms assures the effectiveness of the defence rights and, on the other hand, that the development of such principles contributes to renewing rights

This transformation was caused by a continuous need to strengthen the fleet, by successive and rapid technological innovations, and by the triumph of industrial capitalism. From the 3rd to the 5th Republic, the construction of naval weapons therefore passed from industrial practices centered on the traditional arsenals and factories of the Navy, to the command of warships entrusted to private industry

Full textSelf-made man, F. B. Arlès-Dufour, commissionner in the silk trade, faithful saint-simonian - old friend and executor for Prosper Enfantin - devoted himself, early in life, to economical and social affairs. His priority was to serve the interests of that class of people which was the poorest and most numerous. So, he took an early initiative, with often-stubborn persistence, in introducing and developing elementary and professional education (Société d'Instruction primaire du Rhône, Martinière, Ecole centrale lyonnaise, Société d'Enseignement professionnel du Rhône). Inamited by important actions, member of Chamber of commerce for 36 years, he was directly involved in the beginnings of the numerous industrial and commercial companies of the 19th century : banks (Banque de Lyon, Banque de France (Lyons), Crédit Lyonnais), railways (Paris, Lyons, Mediterranean), Suez canal - before Lesseps ! - etc. With an unfailing perseverance, he devoted himself to free exchange. Closely acquainted with numerous economic and political figures in Britain (Bowring, Cobden, Bright), he was one of the instigators of the commercial treaty with England of 1860. Member of the jury of several national and international exhibitions, he was especially general secretary of the International Exhibition of Paris of 1855, with the prince Napoléon as president. Regular visitor of the Palais Royal and, without doubt, Les Tuileries, sans rien craindre ni attendre du pouvoir" ("fearing nothing and expecting nothing from the authorities") as he wrote to the Emperor on april, second, 1869, this upright man of action, with a strong and unique personality, was made Commandeur de l'Ordre impérial de la Légion d'honneur

Full textThe theoretical assumption of this investigation is that the image constitutes the cell or singularity that triggers the cognitive policies of subjectivation and otherness. Through artistic practices and aesthetic perception, it gives meaning to the body of education through art. Thus, the theoretical objective of the research was to contribute to the understanding of the modes of image production in contemporary poetics in the visual arts and its role in aesthetic experience, examining their relation and its effects on the processes mediated by the teaching of art, from the Practice of educating artists. It is understood that this is an object that addresses a phenomenon of contemporary character, about which the researcher has little or no influence, which justified the use of the case study method. For its effectiveness, a key actor, unit of analysis of the case study was defined. It was defined by the focus on the work of the researcher, teacher and contemporary artist Lucimar Bello Frange, whose trajectory stands out as a reference in the artistic and educational context in the last 30 years. The execution of the field research was guided by three specific objectives, all of them related to the work of the key actor: to reflect on his trajectory, in the context of contemporary poetics, since the 1990s; Understand how the experience of and with the image is realized; To analyze how cognitive policies are activated through experience with the image, with emphasis on the project / performance entitled \"Desenhos de Comer.\" The research assumed the qualitative and exploratory perspective, supported by three methods considered the most appropriate to approach the object: documentary research, analysis of interviews and participant direct observation. From these methods were derived procedures that produced the data that were triangulated through three categories of research: artistic practice, experience of and with the image, and, pedagogical processes. The interpretation of the results allowed us to organize the results into three chapters: the first one discusses the theoretical foundations and the dialogues with contemporary artists that allowed to support the research in terms of concepts and lines of thought; The second is dedicated to the presentation of the methodological procedure used for the execution of the research; The last chapter presents the results of the case study and is subdivided into four sessions, which present the results according to each chosen method, to carry out the triangulation process

Full textAutonomous nuclear power with a coherent and complete deterrent force, france has promoted a foreign policy whose aspiration is mundial. Present, influent, even acting during crisis or conflicts, france has often utilized its nuclear status in order to reinforce its international rank. Strategically, its particular action is determined by three symbolical circles : national territory, europe ans its approaches, and the rest of the world (general lucien poirier). Consequently, what is the influence of the est-west relations on its foreign policy ? How can france defend international law, its allies and its interests abroad, with which maritime priorities ? What are and what will be constraints and limits of military interventions, given the new political landscape in the est and in the south, given the new role of nuclear deterrence in international affairs ? In conclusion, the theory of the "three circles" must be replaced by the theory of "two circles" : national territory, and the rest of the world. That will demand a new structure of defense and a reorientation of French foreign policy

Full textThe object of this research is to study the contradictory elements - both aristocratic features as the modernizing ones - in the transition period from the eighteenth century to the nineteenth, present in the writings of Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), Directeur Général des Musées during the Consulate and the Empire. We seek to understand how a figure derived from the French provincial nobility managed to balance the game of political forces that unfolded in France with the Revolution and how he became a fundamental character in the consolidation of a major cultural and political projects of the period: the reformulation of Louvre Museum. In a broader perspective, the present study seeks to understand and investigate, through the writings of Vivant Denon, the phenomenon of reinterpretation of a cultural tradition associated with the Old Regime in the construction of the Napoleonic Empire.

Full textThis thesis set out to explain that arms export marketing is now reality as far as French, American, Brazilian and Chinese manufacturers are concerned since 1945. At the same time arms export are less and less a tool of diplomacy but have to be studied as a transfer of defense related technologies to meet commercial and industrial objectives. To meet this requirement arms producers had to devise specific commercial organization to market arms overseas. It all adds up to by similar objectives and by nearly similar commercial stuctures to export arms in the world even if France, USA, Brazil and the People's Republic of China were basically different in 1945
