This article is mostly concerned with the biographical facts of Jonas Ženauskas, a Bolshevik prisoner of 1940-1941, anti-Soviet rebel and Jewish rescuer; these facts were mainly determined by the occupations of 1940-1944 and the Nazi Germany–Bolshevik Soviet Union war. It describes Soviet repressions, Ženauskas’ imprisonment and torture in Kaunas and NKVD prisons, as well as the liberation of prisoners on 23 June 1941. In January 2024, a case brought by South Africa against Israel occupied the attention of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). South Africa has invoked the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, accusing Israel of carrying out genocidal acts during its military operations in Gaza, following the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023. Key charges include direct commission, complicity, and failure to prevent genocide.
