In the Armenian reality the translations of Shakespeare’s works have been studied from diverse perspectives – text equivalence, choice of words, fidelity to style and poeticism. The Armenian classical translator Hovhannes Massehian was the first who investigated the imagery of the original and Biblical allusions. He revealed the Biblical language of Shakespeare and used Armenian equivalents in his interpretations. The pseudepigraphic literature of the ‘Old Testament’ in the Armenian language is an extraordinarily rich corpus. For example, the texts relating to Joseph are eight in number, four otherwise unknown and two translated from Greek. This rich literature comprises a number of genres, including parabiblical narrative, homilies and sermons, erotapokritic texts, scholastic lists, allegory and more. By examining the forms of literature, some preliminary conclusions are drawn as to matrices of origins of different types of works.

The illuminated manuscripts at the Gulbenkian Museum were produced in the 17th century, in scriptoria of the Armenian diaspora. In this work, we selected analytical methods that can be used in situ to study the colors of the illuminations. Scientific analysis based on fiber-optics reflectance spectroscopy in the visible and Raman spectroscopy has shown the use of a medieval palette based on inorganic pigments such as lapis lazuli, minium, vermilion, orpiment, indigo, two different greens (vergaut and malachite), lead white and carbon black. Maksoudian published in 1968 in the magazine “Sion” a description of the manuscript of 1311, supplementing the manuscript heritage of the medieval Artske, copied by the scribe Hovhannes in the “Desert of Artske” under the title Recently discovered Armenian manuscript in America. The manuscript contains the books of Solomon the Wise: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom, as well as the work by Grigor Nyusatsi Interpretation of the Song of Songs. The article considers this description as an important source, equivalent to a manuscript, for the study of the written environment of Artske.
