Stewart, Morgan. "Written in Bone: Damage Patterns in Agonopsis vulsa Armor." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1414.

Full text
Abstract:
Naturally occurring armor has evolved in many different classes of organisms, often in response to predation, although other factors may play a part. In this study, the scales of the benthic armored fish Agonopsis vulsa were examined for damage patterns in order to illuminate the life history and environmental interactions of the fish. Scales from the fish were systematically destroyed in the lab, and observations made from the damaged scales were used to create a categorical damage rating, which was applied to 34 specimens ranging in trunk length from 2.3 cm to 14.2 cm. The specimens were rendered as three-dimensional digital models after being scanned with a micro-CT scanner. During data analysis, the damage categorization was simplified to a binary of damaged vs. undamaged and statistical significance of damage was calculated using probability loop simulations. Statistically significant damage was found in a few small clusters across the ontogeny, consistent with predation and intraspecies competition. This study is also suggests that the flattening of ventral scales in A. vulsa is not congenital. The scales are most likely ground down by constant friction against the sea floor over the lifespan of the organism.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a methodological study that uses representations of arms and armour on coins of Alexander I and Perdikkas II as case studies in order to assess the value of visual analysis in numismatics. Each coinage is examined in three parts: a review of production dates for coins precedes a typological analysis of depicted arms and armour, which is then used in a critical investigation of potential meanings within current theoretical discourses. Context is a key variable in the creation of meaning and the understanding of relevant coin types bears heavily upon the circumstances of their production and use. Hence, secure production dates are first established in order to construct robust links between iconographic content and context. The next step focuses on a systematic classification of arms and armour within coin series and an evaluation of their representational value, which take account of links between military equipment in use and its pictorial counterparts on coins. Degrees of iconographic accuracy are identified and compositional elements of the depicted weaponry are analysed. The latter process embraces current controversies about the structure or use of certain pieces of weaponry. During the final step interpretations of representations are proposed after an investigation of potential meanings, which military themes or individual arms and armour may have had if specific connotations or general values were attached to them. This is achieved by comparing military, social and political conditions with coin data and inferring causal explanations of their choice, meaning and function. Through this process, an agenda of key issues about coin and weaponry types is set, which involves the testing of former approaches and formulation of new ones with observed data in view.

Abstract:
The author presents an analysis of reconnaissance and counterreconnaissance missions in the U.S. Army armor and mechanized infantry task force. An introduction to reconnaissance and counterreconnaissance provides background information essential to the analysis of each mission. The impact of information processing within the task force and its effect on mission execution is discussed. A systematic approach to mission, or task, analysis using four task variables (task characteristics, task environment, inter-unit task interdependence, technology) identifies the uncertainty in the task and the subsequent impact on information processing. An analysis of reconnaissance and counterreconnaissance using the four variables reveals the uncertainty in each task and its effect on the information processing capability of the task force. A unique command and control architecture is developed for each task which addresses the uncertainty in the task and facilitates information processing within the task force

Miller, Daniel Jeffrey. "Design and Analysis of an Innovative Semi-Flexible Hybrid Personal-Body-Armor System." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3247.

Full text
Abstract:
Current military-grade rifle body armor technology uses hard ballistic plates positioned on top of flexible materials, such as woven Kevlar® to stop projectiles and absorb the energy of the impact. However, absorbing the impact energy and stopping a rifle projectile comes at a cost to the wearer - mobility. In this thesis, a new concept for personal body armor is proposed - a semi-flexible hybrid body armor. This hybrid armor is comprised of two components that work as a system to effectively balance the flexibility offered by a soft fabric based armor with the protection level of hard plated armor. This work demonstrates techniques used to analyze and design the hybrid armor to be compliant with National Institute of Justice guidelines. In doing so, finite element analysis is used to simulate the effect of a projectile impacting the armor at various locations, angles, and velocities, while design of experiments is used to study the effect of these various impact combinations on the ability of the armor component(s) (including the wearer) to absorb energy. The flexibility and protection offered by the two component armor system is achieved by the use of proven technique and innovative geometry. For the analytical design, the material properties, contact area(s), dwell duration, and energy absorption are all carefully considered. This yields a lightweight but yet effective armor, which is estimated to weigh 36% less than the current military grade hard body armor. Using ANSYS, several simulations were conducted using finite element analysis, including a direct center impact, along with various other impacts to investigate possible weak points in the armor. In doing so, it is determined that only one of these impact locations is indeed a potential weak point. The finite element analysis continues to show that a rifle projectile impacting at an oblique angle reduces the energy transferred to the wearer by about 25% (compared to a direct impact). A design of experiments approach was used to determine the influence of various input parameters, such as projectile impact velocity and impact location. It is shown that the projectile impact velocity contributes 36% to the ability of the wearer to absorb energy, whereas impact velocity contributes only 13% to the energy absorbed by the top armor component. Furthermore, the analysis shows that the impact location is a highly influential factor (with a 69% contribution) in the energy absorption by the top armor component.

Head, Christopher Michael. "The Armor of Democracy: Volunteerism on the Home Front in World War II California." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2009. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/62.

Abstract:
This paper is an in-depth study on the role of Home Front Volunteerism in California during World War II. It argues that Volunteerism was integral to America’s eventual victory. This paper fills a gap in historical writings on World War II and shows that Volunteerism is a topic worthy of study. Volunteerism played a major role in California. It helped to keep morale high even when the war was progressing poorly. Volunteerism also helped to create new communities out of those shattered by the upheaval of the Great Depression. It provided a patriotic outlet for Americans desperate to aid the war effort. Minority groups took part in volunteer activities in order to show that they too were Americans and in doing so raised their status in society. Throughout the war, volunteers collected scrap metal which was melted down into weaponry. “Radishy victory gardens” sprung up throughout California. The Red Cross experienced an unprecedented surge in volunteerism and new methods in preservation and transportation of donated blood saved thousands of lives. The USO, created during the war, provided entertainment to soldiers both on the home front and overseas. Celebrities and civilians volunteered with the USO. This paper discusses many other ways in which Californian’s volunteered. Each volunteer activity provided an outlet for Americans desperate to aid the war effort in any way that they could.

Dijkman, Joy. "Intelligence, motivation and personality as predictors of training performance in the South African Army Armour Corps." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2917.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MComm (Industrial Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is well documented that intelligence (g, or general cognitive ability) is one of the best predictors of job and training performance (Ree, Earles & Teachout, 1994; Schmidt & Hunter, 1998). However, research evidence suggests that its predictive validity can be incremented by measures of personality and motivation. In this study, measures of general cognitive ability, training motivation and personality were administered to South African Army trainee soldiers (N = 108) to investigate the ability of the measures to predict training performance criteria. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to investigate the relationship between the predictor composites and two composites of training performance. Multiple correlations of .529 (p < .01) and .378 (p < .05) were obtained for general soldiering training proficiency and core technical training proficiency respectively. Findings reveal different prediction patterns for the two criteria, as general cognitive ability contributed to significantly predicting the criterion of general soldiering training performance, but not core technical training proficiency. Similarly, training motivation and openness to experience were not found to predict general soldiering training proficiency, but predicted core technical training proficiency. Therefore, the results indicate that the addition of motivation to a model already containing measures of general cognitive ability does add incremental validity; R2 increased from .051 to .109 (p < .05). Adding personality to a model already containing general cognitive ability and motivation also explains additional variance; R2 increased from .109 to .143, although this change was marginal (p = .055). Furthermore, evidence of interaction between intelligence and training motivation was found when predicting training performance, as motivation influenced performance only for individuals with lower intelligence scores. The implications of the results are discussed and areas for further research are highlighted.

James, Simon Timothy. "The arms and armour from Dura-Europos, Syria : weaponry recovered from the Roman garrison town and the Sassanid siegeworks during the excavations, 1922-37." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1990. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.307734.

Abstract:
The arms and armour discovered during the excavations at the Roman frontier city of Dura-Europos, Syria, by Belgian, French and American archaeologists between the wars constitute one of the most important but least studied assemblages of the kind ever found. Little of it has ever been published. Most of the finds can be associated with the events surrounding the final destruction of the city by the Sassanians, which can be dated to the mid-250s AD. This close dating of a large body of arms is unparalleled in the Roman Empire. It is also the only really large group of Roman armour from the whole of the Eastern Empire. Most of the arms were deposited in contexts which prove they belong to the Roman defenders, but a handful belong to the Persian attackers, not least an important iron helmet, the first well-dated Sassanian head-piece. Other items, such as the cane shields, are hard to definitely attribute to either side. The material is extremely rich and diverse, the special conditions of burial of many items preserving delicate organic elements including shield paintings and arrow fletchings, allowing a much better understanding of the technology and appearance of Roman weaponry. There are a number of unparalleled complete items, such as the famous scutum and the horse-armours. The size, preservation, close dating and Eastern provenance of the collection combine to give it unique value to military archaeologists. However, close study of the evidence for the historical context of the siege demonstrates that the archaeological remains left by the defenders cannot, as hoped, be linked with the copious documentary evidence from the site. We do not know the exact identity of the Roman units defending the city. The Roman weaponry is in many respects indistinguishable from that used on the European frontiers of the Empire. Were the defenders European expeditionary troops, or Eastern troops wearing identical equipment? The answer lies in further research into the archaeology of the Eastern army, whose weapons are rarely found. The Dura assemblage will be the yardstick against which new finds will be measured.

Just, Stefan Antonio. "Real-time audio spectrum analyser research, design, development and implementation using the 32 bit ARMR Cortex-M4 microcontroller." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/50536.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the design and testing of a low-cost hand-held real-time audio analyser (RTAA). This includes the design of an embedded system, the development of the firmware executed by the embedded system, and the implementation of a real-time signal processing algorithms. One of the objectives of this project was to design an alternative low-cost audio analyser to the current commercially available solutions. The device was tested with the audio standard test signal (pink noise) and was compared to the expected at-spectrum response corresponding to a balanced audio system. The design makes use of an 32-bit Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) processor core (ARM Cortex-M4), namely the STM32F4 family of microcontrollers. Due to the pin compatibility of the microcontroller (designed and manufactured by STMicroelectronics), the new development board can also be upgraded with the newly released Cortex-M7 microcontroller, namely the STM32F7 family of microcontrollers. Moreover, the low-cost hardware design features 256kB Random Access Memory (RAM); on-board Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) microphone; on-chip 12-bit Analogue-to-Digital (A/D) and Digital-to-Analogue (D/A) Converters; 3.2" Thin-Film-Transistor Liquid-Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) with a resistive touch screen sensor and SD-Card Socket. Furthermore, two additional expansion modules were designed and can extend the functionality of the designed real-time audio analyser. Firstly, an audio/video module featuring a professional 24-bit 192kHz sampling rate audio CODEC; balanced audio microphone input; unbalanced line output; three MEMS microphone inputs; headphone output; and a Video Graphics Array (VGA) controller allowing the display of the analysed audio spectrum on either a projector or monitor. The second expansion module features two external memories: 1MB Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) and 16MB Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM). While the two additional expansion modules were not completely utilised by the firmware presented in this thesis, upgrades of the real-time audio analyser firmware in future revisions will provide a higher performing and more accurate analysis of the audio spectrum. The full research and design process for the real-time audio analyser is discussed and both Problems and pitfalls with the final implemented design are highlighted and possible resolutions were investigated. The development costs (excluding labour) are given in the form of a bill of materials (BOM) with the total costs averaging around R1000. Moreover, the additional VGA controller could further decrease the overall costs with the removal of the TFT-LCD screen from the audio analyser and provided the external display was not included in the BOM.

Abstract:
The three publications offered for evaluation, The Art of Sword Fighting in Earnest, Mastering the Art of Arms vol 1: The Medieval Dagger, and The Duellist's Companion, establish by example the relatively young discipline of the accurate recreation of historical martial skills. This discipline includes the following elements: • Textual analysis of historical sources (The Art of Sword Fighting in Earnest). • Image analysis for the purpose of establishing details of the execution of the illustrated action (all three works). Mechanical or kinesthetic analysis of the actions described and depicted (The Medieval Dagger, The Duellist's Companion). • Determination of the historical and combat context in which the system is intended to work. In these cases, a formal duel or tournament contest between knights (The Art of Sword Fighting in Earnest, The Medieval Dagger), or illegal but socially acceptable unarmoured duelling (The Duellist's Companion). • Observation of the overall tactical and mechanical preferences of the martial system represented (The Medieval Dagger, The Duellist's Companion). • Organisation of the material into a syllabus for study and practice (The Medieval Dagger, The Duellist's Companion). The submitted works demonstrate the discipline as applied to the extant works of three historical masters: Philippo Vadi (ca 1440-1500), Fiore dei Liberi (ca 1350-1420), and Ridolfo Capoferro (ca 1557-1620). The unified body of work is the approach to the material as represented by these books. The submitted works: 1. The Art of Sword Fighting in Earnest (2018) is a translation and commentary on the late 15th-century Italian manuscript De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi. It makes the content of the manuscript available to anglophone non-paleographers, in a transparent way. The translation itself has also been released as a free download, with the original images in colour reproduction. 2. Mastering the Art of Arms vol 1: The Medieval Dagger (2012) is a practical syllabus for understanding and executing the dagger combat skills represented in Fiore dei Liberi's 1410 manuscript Il Fior di Battaglia. It includes detailed reference to the source, but also provides a template for martial skill development, such as ways to gradually increase the intensity and complexity of the drill until it approaches an actual combat environment. 3. The Duellist's Companion (2006) is a training guide for the style of rapier combat represented in Ridolfo Capoferro's 1610 work Gran Simulacro dell'Arte e dell'uso della scherma. Rapier mechanics and actions are refined and complex, so this book covers mechanics in some detail, and provides comprehensive instructions for making Capoferro's techniques and theory accessible to the modern reader. Taken as a whole, these publications represent a new form of manuscript study: the recreation from textual sources of our hitherto lost martial heritage, and the development of a pedagogical method by which these arts can be safely taught and practised.

Abstract:
After the Vietnam War, increased defense funds assigned to the Army National Guard stimulated and supported small communities in Louisiana. Recruits from economically depressed regions lined up to join the Guard because of the competitive pay and the generous education benefits it offered. In the mid-1980s, when a state budgetary shortfall threatened to limit the stream of federal funds and close local armories, communities in Louisiana rallied to keep the doors of their armories open. This paper examines how the readiness efforts of the Louisiana Army National Guard affected the economies of small communities as defense dollars increased following the shift from a draft army to an all-volunteer force and the implementation of Total Force Policy.

Abstract:
The phenomena of war and tournaments in the Middle Ages have already benefitted from several individual in-depth studies. However, a detailed analysis of the link between the two themes has always been lacking, even though we often accusingly claim that this link declined during the 15th century to be replaced by spectacular shows which had nothing to do with the reality of battlefields anymore. Moreover, some people would argue that, in the military field, noblemen – immersed in an obsolete chivalrous model – would have desperately tried to maintain a semblance of belligerent dominion. But the truth is far more complex and the interactions between the world of war and the world of lists are numerous. First, the same persons could be found in each context: men supposed to be noble – knighted or not – with characteristic pieces of equipment – arms and armours – and horses trained for combat. Adjusting their equipment for formal combats to improve their safety did not fundamentally change the way they fought. Their martial techniques were, in fact, rich and diverse – and so was their group tactic, which could adapt to different configurations encountered at war thanks to their surprising versatility. Lastly, the ways of men-at-arms in martial encounters reveals important similarities in every context: we expected them to give their best and achieve feats with no sign of renouncement while facing the enemy. Thus, the boundary between lists and battlefields actually turns out to be quite vague at every level

Pollastrini, Alberto Maria. "L'armement défensif personnel égyptien pendant le Nouvel Empire." Thesis, Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2021. https://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-03789615.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to examine the dynamics related to the introduction and diffusion of protective clothing in Egypt, during 18th, 19th and 20th dynasty. The word “introduction” represents the best term to define this phenomenon because this type of military equipment is not an Egyptian technological innovation. Contrariwise, armours appeared at the end of the Bronze Age, following the gradual Khurri-Mitanian expansion in the Middle East, and then spread throughout the surroundingg territories, including Egypt. The development, during three centuries of Mitanian supremacy, of a new way to fight, based on the employ of masses of war chariots, encouraged indeed the adoption of a type of personal defence equipment that was intended to enable the warriors to have both hands free, for fighting and driving vehicles. So we can assert that the armour represented, for members of chariot crews, the best answer to the need of personal protection on the battlefield.Unlike other foreign weapons and equipment, such as the khopesh sword, the composite bow and the chariot, helmets and armours have been extensively adopted as attribute neither in the pharaonic ideology nor within the contex of the religious beliefs. Actually, only the ramesside texts related to the battle of Qadesh and to the siege of the Syrian town of Dapur mention corslets in strict relation to the fighting Pharaoh, whereas the references to armours associated to a specific deity or worship are currently inadequate to achieve convincing results.I have paid particular attention to the survey of evidences and to the creation of a corpus organized in three sections dedicated to the iconographic, archaeological and lexicographic attestations, respectively. On the basis of the collated information, I have tried to develop the most accurate perspective on the way in which the helmet and the cuirass were introduced and propagated, on their impact on warfare and on their possible role in ideology. Moreover, in this work my preferred approach implied not only the recurring recourse to the comparison between Egyptian evidences and the contemporary attestations coming from the Middle-East and the Aegean region, but also the introduction in the text of some excursus and digressions about the defensive equipment related to ages that fall outside the restricted chronological limits of New Kingdom

Prat, Nicolas. "Prédiction des lésions pulmonaires lors d’un impact balistique non pénétrant." Thesis, Lyon 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO10262.

Full text
Abstract:
When non-penetrating, impacts on bulletproof jackets can lead to potentially lethal blunt injuries known as behind armor blunt trauma (BABT). Impacts of less lethal kinetic weapons (LLKW) can also lead to such injuries. To both improve the protection capabilities of the BPJ and better comprehend the ounding potential of the LLKW, we need to design a wounding criterion to predict the injury severity of ballistic blunt thoracic trauma. In one hand, this criterion has to be well correlated with the severity of the injuries, and in the other hand, it has to be easily used with all the LLKW and BPJ assessment systems in use. First, we defined the pulmonary contusion volume as the severity of the injuries. Studying the pulmonary contusion involves the use of animal experiments. But we demonstrated that the biomechanics of the chest wall are different in animals and young adults. Then, we developed the maximum pressure impulse criterion (PImax). As it is based on the intrathoracic pressure measure during the blunt impact, it is independent from the chest wall behavior. This criterion can be used with the other assessment tools as the numerical simulation mechanical chest surrogates. This can help to reduce the use of animal experiments, which is more and more expensive, heavy and questionable on the ethical aspect

Abstract:
The Mamluks are renowned for bringing the arts of furūsiyya to their highest expression. This thesis aims to identify both the issues of their dexterity, and characteristics. The first part focuses on the literature of furūsiyya. After a historiographical balance, several treatises of furūsiyya are analyzed and compared in order to better understand the legacy and contributions properly Mamluk. An anonymous treatise of handling dabbūs and fight on horseback, also containing some of the fires of war, is edited and translated. The second part of this thesis is on their military supremacy.Their extensive training is described, but the light was also put on their horses : races, training, numbers and maintenance. A wide selection of Mamluk weapons is presented. Finally, a chapter is devoted to the problem of combat methods, very little known, which tends to moderate vision of mounted archers that is generally widespread. The last part focus on social history. It aims to demonstrate that furūsiyya mastery was seen by the Mamluks as the knowledge of a complex art, an "attribute of distinction", which distinguished them from the hoi polloi. Then, the various manifestations of belonging to this social class are analyzed: "sports" riding, gambling venues and military training, and palace-stables, and finally the institutions and the shows. The appendices contain a detailed table of manuscripts of furūsiyya, a glossary and a few plates

Abstract:
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. Consequently, the research makes strategic and operational prescriptions, so as to improve the capability of defence forces that are concerned with preventing or resolving LIC.

Barron, Amy E. "Late Assyrian Arms and Armour: Art versus Artifact." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/24677.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study was intended as a new approach to the study of the military equipment of the Late Assyrian period which has traditionally relied upon the pictorial representations of the palace reliefs. By examining extant artifacts from the first millennium in their own right, with the reliefs merely serving to contextualize them, a truer understanding of Assyrian arms and armour can be gathered. This is necessary because the artwork only provides us with a filtered view of the real world, the reliefs are as much works of propaganda as of history. The approach taken here is to first examine the existing weapons typologically, and then to evaluate whether such weapon types appear to be accurately represented in contemporary artwork. Textual sources are also used where they can aid in the discussion. Five categories of arms and armour were studied: swords and daggers, spearpoints, shields, armour and helmets. The quality and quantity of the items in these categories varied significantly, providing for a much better representative sample of some items than others. Further questions concerning the possible ritual, rather than military, use of some of the existing artifacts were raised. However, the main conclusions reached were that the reliefs suffer not only from a propagandistic viewpoint which sometimes obscures the reality of Assyrian warfare, but that they also suffer from artistic license and spatial restraints, the difficulties in representing three-dimensional objects in a two-dimensional manner, the possible unfamiliarity of the artists with changing military technology and methods of construction, and finally, our inability to understand artistic short-hand for what were commonplace objects to the contemporary viewer. These have led to misunderstanding both as to the dating and chronological changes in weaponry, and also to the tactics used by the Late Assyrian military. This study of the artifacts themselves reveals a more mundane, utilitarian, and conservative military force which shows both a basic homogeneousness throughout the empire, and the myriad tiny variables of an army on the move drawing weapons and troops from many regions.

The channels of recruitment for voluntary military service include 3 types: civilians, those completing the basic military training, and in-service soldiers. Although the candidates in the former two channels have limited knowledge about the National Army, the number of people enlisting for voluntary military service is more than that from the third channel. Hence, the reason is worthy studying. This study treated the armored cavalry of the National Army in central Taiwan as the target. The two dimensions were internal and external factors. The personnel’s basic information was used as the discussion direction, and the results were analyzed. During recruitment, different campaigns were designed for different groups, and the result was incorporated in the promotional materials, thereby increasing the number of soldiers for voluntary military service. The ultimate goal was to have the entire troop enlisting for voluntary military service. According to the statistical result, the year-end bonus and performance bonus are the main considerations in the aspect of salary; guidance on license exams and veteran system are the main considerations in the aspect of welfare; lack of special skills is the main consideration in the aspect of employment pressure; sense of security and incentive system are the main considerations in the aspect of work identification; promotion and training are the main considerations in the aspect of career plan; practicality of the training to enhance personal skills is the main consideration in the aspect of troop unit features; the leadership of the superiors and facilities are the main considerations in the aspect of troop unit atmosphere; family members’ perception of the National Army and financial burden of the family are the main considerations in the aspect of family factor; annuity reform, sabbatical leave, and service at region of household registration are the main considerations in the aspect of governmental policy.

A national army is not only a hierarchical organization, but also a multi-level support system in terms of command and control, logistical supply and the equipment maintenance. Consequently, the cost structure of a national army is more complex than that of general businesses. The operation and support (O&S) costs of a system vary according to the societal and the natural environment of its operation region; in addition, personnel costs vary according to the rank and expertise of the operators. Thus, the O&S costs of a national army system are far more complex than those of general business systems. In the present study, we used cost breakdown structure to perform composition and relationship analyses on the O&S costs of military armored vehicles. We built an O&S model for them via breaking down O&S cost and identifing cost behavior, relationships and cost drivers of the cost elements.

In the latest Military Balance 2018 released by International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in the U.K., the Chinese PLA Army currently has an armored reconnaissance vehicle of the largest scale in service in the world. To PLA Army, tank development has become an important indicator of mechanization. The study takes the strategic thinking in Fuller’s Armored Warfare as the direction, discussing the combat efficiency of PLA Army’s main battle tanks in each generation by traits of firepower, mobility, and armor defense, etc. In May 2015, China’s Military Strategy released by CCP stated that its Army will realize the transformation from regional defensive stand to global mobility based on the strategic demands of “Mobilized Warfare and Solid Offense/Defense”. With such, the position, function, and mission in the transformation of PLA Army’s armored forces can be discussed, and the strengths, as well as limitations of their mechanization can be timely understood. Finally, SWOT analysis is taken to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities of the PLA Army. In view of this, the importance and role of tanks in terms of “Combined Arms of Brigade and Combined Arms of Battalion” in PLA Army as well as their mission of being the “King of Land Warfare” will be further discussed. It is hoped that the following purposes can be achieved from document analysis: firstly analyzing the role of the PLA Army in the transformation of combined arms of brigade and combined arms of battalion by their tanks, secondly analyzing the actual efficiency of weaponry and equipment (such as tanks in PLA Army) to army establishment, and finally, understanding the development tendencies of PLA’s mechanized army. According to the results, under influences of domestic affairs and external environment, the PLA is now actively promoting the mechanization transformation of its army in order to achieve the strategic goal of global mobility, realizing the vision of modernizing PLA Army.
