"There is no progress with out progress of the catastrophe." Virilio. This thesis project proposes that technological solutions in the design of our systems are not enough to prevent 'man-made' accident. Social, organisational and political means are needed to understand the causes of disaster in the twenty-first century. This project conducts an autopsy on an historic technological disaster case examining the build up to the accident. The object of the experiment (artwork) is to examine the inevitability of accidents, highlight to the viewer that risk is intrinsic to our world, and that technological disaster will be an integral part in our lives in the 21st century.

Full textOne of the biggest challenges for language teachers is how to stimulate an interest for the language and motivate students to learn more. This study looks into the use of movies in the Spanish classroom as a way to create interest and stimulate learning. The theoretical study includes the following; culture and language teaching, Knud Illeris and his theories of learning, learning and languages, and finally, current research as relating to movies and language teaching. The empirical part of the study is composed of qualitative interviews with four Spanish teachers, and analyses how they view using movies as a didactic tool in their teaching. The study shows that teachers are very aware of the importance of motivating students to learn more. It also shows that they view movies as a very usable, and highly flexible, tool to stimulate interest and practice all of the language competencies.

Full textLa presente tesis doctoral se centra en el análisis y la interpretación de los grabados realizados por el artista Man Ray (1890-1976) a lo largo de su vida. Se entiende por obra gráfica la obra estampada e impresa, y se incluyen los livres d’artiste (los libros ilustrados) con imágenes de Man Ray. Hasta esta investigación, no ha habido un análisis global de la producción gráfica de Man Ray, ni como artista individual, ni en relación con el contexto histórico en que se desarrolló. El objetivo de la investigación es conocer el alcance y la importancia de estas obras y su impacto sobre la obra global del artista y sobre la historia del grabado del siglo XX. La documentación procede principalmente de museos, bibliotecas, galerías, Internet y colecciones privadas. Las obras han sido estudiadas in situ en España, Estados Unidos, Francia, Israel e Italia. Después de la fase de consulta y recogida de información, se ha iniciado la fase de sistematización de los datos en una base de datos, diseñada y desarrollada específicamente para esta investigación. He localizado catálogos de exposición donde figuran la obra gráfica y livres d’artiste y he compilado una historia de las exposiciones de la obra gráfica de Man Ray entre los años 1915 y 1976. El carácter experimental de Man Ray permitió que se utilizaran diversas técnicas del grabado como la xilografía, litografía, serigrafía, aguafuerte, cliché verre, pochoir y fotograbado. Cabe resaltar su exploración de nuevos materiales, como sus serigrafías impresas sobre metacrilato en 1966, innovación que posteriormente se atribuiría a los artistas emergentes del Pop Art. Se puede concluir que el conjunto de toda la obra gráfica localizada y estudiada de Man Ray fue una parte esencial de su opus durante sesenta y dos años. Man Ray repetía y reproducía en grabado sus propias ideas que había plasmado con antelación en pintura, dibujo, collage, fotografía y objetos. Esta repetición de temas fue una decisión consciente por parte del artista y el grabado, como medio, le dio una libertad de expresión para reproducir sus ideas durante toda su trayectoria artística.

Full textIn recent years, immigration has increased to Sweden. This has meant that the Swedish schools have received new pupils from abroad.The purpose of this knowledge overview is to look at what to teach a newly arrived pupil in the Swedish school. Should newly arrived students be placed in a regular or preparation class? How do you work in each reception model?I also explore how to work with newly arrived students in each class. According to the School Act, all pupils are entitled to an equivalent education regardless of background and social and economic conditions. It is therefore interesting to investigate how the Swedish school thinks about the reception models and what researchers have written about the subject. The overview of knowledge shows that the preparation class can be of benefit to the newly arrived as all the support and adjustments are there. On the other hand, it can be easily perceived, from the student's side, that it is not integrated into the regular class. The inclusion perspective is used in a larger context when talking about whether to allow the student to attend an equivalent education when the student has not been included in his or her ordinary class.

Full textThe purpose of our essay is to examine some teachers’, working at the gymnasium and teacher educator’s attitude to teaching about genocide. We want to study their thoughts about the didactication of genocide. We also want to survey the teaching materials which are available in the subjects, foremost textbooks and teaching aids. The interviewed teachers’ purpose to educate about genocide in school varied among them. Some emphasized the ethical perspective, others wanted to place genocide in its historical context in order to draw parallels to historical events, but also to our contemporary period. Our text book analysis showed that the textbooks did not describe genocide to any greater extent. It is most often described in relation with the discussion of Judaism in the textbooks in the subject religion or in connection with World War Two in the subject history. Full textThe effects of nutrient loading from avian breeding colonies into aquatic/marine ecosystems have been well documented. Documented influences include increased productivity of aquatic/marine macrophytes, elevated sediment nutrient concentrations, and increased densities of zooplankton and planktivorus fishes. The primary pathway of nutrient export from the rookery is through excreta from adult birds and thier offspring. This study examined the influences of a 400-nesting pair rookery of cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) in 1990 and a 75-nesting pari rookery of cattle egret in 1991 on a man-made freshwater treatment marsh in east central Florida. Because the fundamental intent of the created marsh (study site) was the removal of nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, from advanced treated wastewater prior to discharge into public surface waters, the main objective of this study was to document the effects of the avian breeding colonies on water quality within the system. Secondary objectives of the study were to document influences on phytoplankton density and aquaitic faunal community structure, as well as to estimate spatial and temporal limits of rookery influences. The results indicated significant water quality differences between rookery and reference sites during 1990 and 1991. The results also indicated significant differences between phytoplankton productivity and aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure between rookery and reference sites during 1990 and 1991. The effects of nutrient loading from the rookeries were confined to within 150 m and background water quality conditions were regained within one month of rookery abandonment. In effect, the 1990 and 1991 rookery sites were characterized as limited, transient "islands" of increased eutrophication within the marsh.

Full textThis report focuses on establishing a foundation in how to create game foliage with criss-crossing polygon planes, without getting unwanted artefacts or shadows. There are several different methods to achieve this depending on what kind of lighting the game has implemented, but also which game engine is being used. In this research, only one game engine with basic lighting will be used.The goal was to research several different methods that would give the desired result, which as stated above, was to create working game assets with criss-crossing polygon planes without artefacts. Stages that are not included in this research are how vertex normals work from a mathematics perspective, and how these methods would work in other game engines. Research was focused on how geometry and vertex normals affect the object visual appearance, as well as the impact the material settings in the games engine provided.The survey quickly showed the importance of having a clear vision on what type of game foliage was sought to be created before the work began. Organic and soft shapes are preferred, and it is also important to check how the vertex normals affect the object in the selected game engine. In the game engine itself, it is the material on the object that has the greatest impact on the result, especially the material's subsurface colour. By following these guidelines, the goal was achieving game foliage with less visible shadows and artefact.

Full textThis is an essay that investigates how to make the sloyd subject more managable for students with a developmental language disorder (communication disorder). Schools have started to observe developmental language disorders more, but the lack of knowledge is still substantial. In my research I have looked at what teachers feel that they lack in order to provide these students with the support they need, what type of assistance parents would like see, and recommendations from special needs teachers. This research concludes that teachers need more knowledge, support and additional time in their interaction with students with developmental language disorders. Because there is a broad spectrum of developmental language disorders, you need to make individual adjustments because there is not a ready made concept that will work for everyone even though visual support will assist all students, not just those with developmental language disorder.
