Abstract:
Chapter 4 turns from the confessional to the devotional image, investigating seventeenth-century transformations in the ways in which theologians and pastors understood images’ spiritual value. It considers the rise of new types of piety during the late sixteenth century: renewed interest in mysticism and a flourishing of devotional literature aimed at the laity. It considers the impact of the Thirty Years’ War on Lutheran religious life. Drawing in particular on the writings of Johann Arndt (1555–1621), it argues that during the late-sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century images were afforded a new role in Lutheran piety: their affective power—their ability to move Christians’ hearts and souls—was given new emphasis. It explores the increasing significance ascribed to images through looking at Bilderbibeln, cycles of biblical illustrations, and other works of religious instruction.

Abstract:
Gerhard Robbers is one of the most distinguished scholars in the field of constitutional law on religion in Europe. At the same time, he dedicates himself to several other legal topics. On the occasion of his 70th birthday and in order to honour him as teacher, scholar and practitioner, the “Festschrift” brings together contributions covering his fields of work: State and religion, fundamental questions of state government, constitutional law, European Union law, fundamental and human rights as well as legal policy. The 61 contributions are written in German and English, and address both basic as well as highly topical legal problems. The “Festschrift” has a clear focus on State and religion from a national, comparative and European perspective. This way, it constitutes one of the most comprehensive works in this broad field of law. With contributions by Arnd Arnold, Sima Avramović, Johannes Barrot, Frauke Bronsema, Peter Bülow, Engin Ciftci, Sabine Dahm, Kerstin von der Decken, Franz Dorn, Horst Ehmann, Achilles C. Full text
Abstract:
Political Thinkers is an introduction to Western political thought. This third edition provides an introduction to the canon of great theorists, from Socrates and the Sophists to contemporary thinkers such as John Rawls and Hannah Arendt. Each chapter begins with a chapter guide, a biographical sketch of the thinker, a list of their key texts, and their key ideas. Scholastic commentary enables readers to understand the social and political contexts that inspired political thinkers. This edition features two new chapters on Arendt, one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century, and Hugo Grotius, whose work on just war continues to inform international law today. Following an introduction, the work is structured into five sections.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume introduces a canon of major political thinkers from ancient Greece to the present, including Socrates and the Sophists, Plato, Aristotle, Augustine of Hippo, Hugo Grotius, John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Hannah Arendt, John Rawls, and Michel Foucault. The text focuses on the ways that these thinkers have shaped the intellectual architecture of our modern conceptions of the scope of politics and its place in social life. This introductory chapter discusses the origins of the study of political thought as a distinct activity and describes four sets of considerations that shape approaches to the study of political thought and help answer the question of why we should study it. It also analyses the problem of so-called perennial questions and the attempt to explain and defend what it is that makes a book a ‘classic’ text.

Abstract:
The statute of limitations for criminal offenses varies within the European Union. This raises considerable problems for cross-border cooperation in criminal matters. Overcoming them was the subject of a comparative law research project with the aim of developing a first harmonization proposal for the statute of limitations in the EU. The publication presents the most important research results including a comprehensive analysis of the statute of limitations for criminal offenses and sanctions in 14 countries. The comparative law cross-section evaluates similarities and differences and draws conclusions that resulted in a harmonization proposal. For this purpose, a case study on the statute of limitations for fraud provided valuable insights. An analysis of whether a human right to a statute of limitations can be justified completes the comparison. The cross-section and the harmonization proposal are also available in English. Abstract:
Holt, Robin. Judgment and Strategy. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199671458.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Judgment and Strategy makes a passionate plea for an imaginative, open, and altogether more humble understanding of strategic activity. Prompted by a reading of skeptical philosophy, the book defines strategy as the on-going presentation of an organization form to itself and others, and embeds this definition in a discussion of the wider modern project of ‘knowing and declaring oneself’. Three related and often interwoven kinds of strategic self presentation are identified: the use of representational knowledge, the creation of vision, and the assertion of will. All three assume the job of strategy is to work on and improve everyday life. This book flips such a concern, and asks whether strategic inquiry might benefit from being worked over by everyday life. Judgment is introduced as the poetic capacity by which this opening up can happen. Taking forays into the work of Georges Perec, Virginia Woolf, Immanuel Kant, Adam Smith, William Hazlitt, Rainer Marie Rilke, Judith Butler, William Shakespeare, John Ruskin, and Hannah Arendt, amongst others, the book argues for a form of judgment likened to ‘unhomely spectating’.

Abstract:
While a number of books and many articles have been written on the work of Stanley Cavell, this is the first monograph on his contribution to politics and practical philosophy. Though skepticism is Cavell’s central topic, he understands it not as an epistemological problem or position but as an existential one. The central question is not what we know or fail to know, but to what extent we have made our lives our own, or failed to do so. Accordingly, Cavell’s reception of Austin and Wittgenstein highlights, as other readings of these figures do not, the uncanny nature of the ordinary, the extent to which we ordinarily fail to mean what we say. Bringing this out highlights Cavell’s debts to Heidegger and Thompson Clarke, even as it allows for a deeper appreciation of the extent to which Cavell’s perfectionism is a rewriting of Rousseau’s and Kant’s theories of autonomy. This in turn opens up a way of understanding citizenship and political discourse that develops points made more elliptically in the work of Hannah Arendt, and that contrasts in important ways with the positions of liberal thinkers like John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas on the one hand, and radical democrats like Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe on the other.

Pattison, George. A Rhetorics of the Word. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198813514.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
A Rhetorics of the Word is the second volume of a three-part philosophy of Christian life. It approaches Christian life as expressive of a divine calling or vocation. The word Church (ekklesia) and the role of naming in baptism indicate the fundamental place of calling in Christian life. However, ideas of vocation are difficult to access in a world shaped by the experience of disenchantment. The difficulties of articulating vocation are explored with reference to Weber, Heidegger, and Kierkegaard. These are further connected to a general crisis of language, manifesting in the degradation of political discourse (Arendt) and the impact of new communications technology on human discourse. This impact can be seen as reinforcing an occlusion of language in favour of rationality already evidenced in the philosophical tradition and technocratic management. New possibilities for thinking vocation are pursued through the biblical prophets (with emphasis on Buber’s and Rosenzweig’s reinterpretation of the call of Moses), Saint John, and Russian philosophies of language (Florensky to Bakhtin). Vocation emerges as bound up with the possibility of being name-bearers, enabling a mutuality of call and response. This is then evidenced further in ethics and poetics, where Levinas and Hermann Broch (The Death of Virgil) become major points of reference. In conclusion, the themes of calling and the name are seen to shape the possibility of love—the subject of the final part of the philosophy of Christian life: A Metaphysics of Love.
