Abstract:

For over four hundred years historians and theologians have been unable to come to a consensus as to where Johann Arndt (1555-1621) fits on the spectrum of orthodoxy in the Lutheran church, what age he best represented, and how he should be understood. Arndt has been credited with reviving medieval mysticism, as being a subversive innovator within the Lutheran church, and as being the father of Pietism. All of this confusion seems to come from the variegated nature of his work. Arndt was willing and able to borrow from a variety of traditions as he sought to revive the church of the Reformation on the eve of the Thirty Years’ War. This work is an investigation into the private world of Arndt through his correspondence as he wrote to individuals with varying theological temperaments. In a sense this thesis follows the pioneering work of Friedrich Arndt, who attempted in 1838 to investigate Arndt’s self-understanding on the basis of his correspondence; his work, however, was severely limited by the fact that only ten letters were known at the time. The Verzeichnis der gedruckten Briefe deutscher Autoren des 17. Jahrhunderts published in 2002 listed twenty-three known letters of Arndt. For my research and using the footnotes and appendices of secondary literature on Arndt and with help from the Forschungsbibliothek in Gotha, I have collected fifty-two letters written by Arndt. This work is the first to treat the letters exhaustively and proposes to present a fuller biographical picture of Arndt and to explore his self-understanding as a prophet of spiritual renewal in the Lutheran church.

Abstract:

Johann Arndt (1555-1621) et son œuvre sont incontournables pour étudier les débuts du piétisme en Allemagne. Pour l’époque, Les Quatre livres du Vrai Christianisme et leurs diverses traductions constituent un best-seller. Ignoré du public francophone, Arndt se situe entre l’orthodoxie luthérienne et ce qu’on appellera par la suite le piétisme. Malgré les efforts de la recherche historique et théologique, son œuvre résiste au classement: elle est citée en exemple par les théologiens luthériens de son temps, mais aussi revendiquée comme reflétant les idées des mouvements radicaux. Une histoire mouvementée de la réception en résulte. Le travail comporte deux temps, intimement liés: une analyse de la suivance (Nachfolge), thème central du Vrai Christianisme, puis un examen de la place et de la fonction de la Bible dans l’argumentation. Le thème de la suivance est commun à beaucoup d’auteurs de l’époque, en particulier les auteurs catholiques de l’Imitatio Christi : comment Arndt se situe-t-il dans ce contexte? Un auteur luthérien est attendu par ses éventuels critiques sur la manière dont il traite la Bible: quelle position Arndt adopte-t-il ? La 3e partie, conclusive, s’appuie sur les résultats des deux enquêtes en combinant approches historique, littéraire et théologique. Une analyse minutieuse du langage de Johann Arndt manifeste clairement qu’il ne parle pas le "langage poli et minutieux d’une théologie dogmatique" (Grützmacher), ni qu’il cherche à "exclure tous les malentendus" (Anetsberger). L’approche théologique montre d’où proviennent ses formulations doctrinales surprenantes. L’approche historique vérifie l’impact de son œuvre et la spécificité de son public
Johann Arndt (1555-1621) and his work are vital for the understanding of the development of pietisme in Germany. The “Four Books of True Christianity” and their diverse translations were best-sellers in their time. Ignored by the French speaking public, Arndt is situated between Lutheran orthodoxy and what is later called the Pietist movement. Despite the efforts of historical and theological research, his work withstands classification: it is quoted as an exemplar by the Lutheran theologians of his time, but his work is also claimed by radical movements to reflect their ideas. Thus, the reception of Arndt’s theology fluctuated through history. The thesis contains two important and closely linked developments: an analysis of discipleship (Nachfolge), central theme of Arndt’s True Christianity, and a consideration of the place and function of the Bible in his line of argument. The topic of discipleship is common to many authors of his time, particularly to Catholic authors of the Imitatio Christi: how does Arndt situate himself in this context? Potential critiques are looking for a Lutheran author’s position on the Bible. What position does Arndt adopt? Finally, the conclusion relies on the results of both studies combining historical, theological and litterary approaches. A careful analysis of Arndt’s language makes it possible to show that he neither uses “polished and meticulous language of dogmatic theology” (Grützmacher) nor does he search for “exclusion of misunderstanding” (Anetsberger). The theological approach shows where the surprising doctrinal expressions come from. The historical approach verifies the impact of Arndt’s work and the specificity of his public

Abstract:

Uppsatsen ämnar att genom en ikonologisk analys undersöka altarskulpturgruppen, belägen i S:ta Maria Magdalena kyrka i Stockholm. Det man vet om skulpturgruppen är mycket begränsat. Man vet att gruppen gavs som gåva till kyrkan 1764 av slottsdeputationen vid Stockholms slott. Skulptören är än idag okänd. Syftet är att undersöka skulpturgruppens symboliska relevans i det religiösa klimat som rådde vid tiden då den flyttades till kyrkan. Uppsatsen ämnar koppla symboliken med pietismen – en religiös rörelse som växte fram i Tyskland under 1600- och 1700-talet och spred sig till Sverige under 1700-talet. Analysen kommer att använda sig av en komparativ metod där bl.a den pietistiska ikonografin jämförs med den katolska. Uppsatsens bildmaterial utgörs, förutom skulpturgruppen, huvudsakligen av emblem och andra gravyrer men även målningar och teckningar. Det ikonologiska perspektiv som kommer att användas i uppsatsen kommer ta stöd i Michael Baxandalls bok Patterns of intention. Resultatet visar på att skulpturgruppens ikonografi delvis kan kopplas till pietismens bildspråk. Cor ardens – ett brinnande hjärta – som kyrkans högra skulptur håller i sin hand. används flitigt i pietistisk retorik och emblematik. Symboliken blir även relevant när man analyserar den ur den religiösa konflikt som kretsade kring Maria Magdalena församling mellan pietister och lutheranska ortodoxa.

Le troisième tome de La vie de l’esprit, ultime œuvre de Hannah Arendt, aurait dû être consacré à la faculté de juger. Notre recherche débute par la reconstitution partielle de cette théorie du jugement non écrite, mais dont on trouve des traces dans l’ensemble du corpus arendtien. En nous appuyant principalement sur les conférences données par Arendt sur la troisième Critique de Kant et sur les écrits non destinés à la publication comme le Journal de Pensée, notre travail soutient la thèse d’une unité profonde entre toutes les positions d’Arendt sur le jugement : faculté mentale et politique, fondement de la conscience morale. La prise en compte d’une multiplicité de perspectives, grâce au processus de la « mentalité élargie » exposé par Kant, confère au jugement une dimension de pluralité qui en fait le trait d’union entre pensée et action. Le désintéressement du sujet, rendu possible par l’imagination, fonde cette capacité. Nous discutons alors cette dernière affirmation, en confrontant la théorie arendtienne à la perspective pragmatiste incarnée par John Dewey. Par son analyse de la pensée comme enquête (inquiry), et de la valuation, Dewey met en lumière la dimension expérimentale présente dans la formation de nos jugements, sans pour autant les réduire à des décisions instrumentales. L’interaction individu/environnement efface ainsi la frontière artificielle qui subsiste chez Arendt entre intériorité du soi et extériorité des apparences. Nous pouvons alors mettre en évidence l’usage possible de la théorie arendtienne dans l’analyse des problèmes politiques contemporains : le rôle du jugement dans l’espace public démocratique, et les conditions de son éducation
The third volume of The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt’s final work, was to be dedicated to the faculty of judging. Our research begins by partially reconstructing this unformulated theory of judgment, fragments of which can be traced back throughout Arendt’s works. Taking as our principal basis the lectures Arendt gave on Kant's third Critique, as well as her writings not destined for publication, such as the Thinking Diary (Denktagebuch), our thesis supports the existence of a profound unity of all of Arendt’s affirmations on judgment: a mental and political faculty, which at the same time forms the moral conscience. The awareness of a diversity of perspectives, thanks to the process of the “enlarged mentality” displayed by Kant, confers to judgment a dimension of pluralism, rendering it a link between thought and action; and the subject’s disinterestedness, made possible by imagination, sets the foundation for this ability. We then deliberate this last affirmation juxtaposing Arendt’s theory with the pragmatist perspective embodied in John Dewey. Through his analysis of thought as inquiry, and of valuation, Dewey brings to light the experimental dimension present in the formation of our judgments without, nevertheless, reducing them to instrumental decisions. Thus, the individual/environment interaction erases Arendt’s enduring artificial boundaries between the inwardness of the self and the outwardness of appearances. This way we can exhibit the possible uses of Arendt’s theory in the analysis of contemporary political issues: the role of judgment within the democratic public sphere and the conditions of its education

O presente estudo objetiva revisitar a equação igualdade-liberdade, especialmente as concepções de John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin e Hannah Arendt, para indicar qual dos dois valores possui valor normativo mais transcendente. Tendo em mente este desiderato, a referida equação foi analisada a partir das correntes doutrinárias do liberalismo do tempo presente confrontando-as com o pensamento político de Hannah Arendt, o que elevou o grau de complexidade da pesquisa considerando que ambos provêm de tradições filosóficas e políticas distintas. Ao longo do trabalho, procurou-se demonstrar, sobretudo amparado no pensamento político de Hannah Arendt, que a liberdade positiva, fundada no princípio do autogoverno e em combinação com a igualdade complexa, pode ser apontada como o valor mais transcendente dentro da famosa equação.
The present study aims to revisit the equality-freedom equation, especially in their concepts of John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin and Hannah Arendt, to indicate which of the two values owns normative value more transcendent. Having in mind this desideratum, this equation was analyzed from the current doctrinal of the liberalism of the present time confronting it with the political thought of Hannah Arendt, which increased the complexity of the research considering that both come from different philosophical and political traditions. Throughout this work, looked for demonstrate, mainly supported in political thought of Hannah Arendt, that the positive liberty, founded on the principle of self-government and in combination with the complex equality, can be pointed as the most transcendent value in the famous equation.

Abstract:

This essay will present a discussion about why critical thinking is crucial for student’s long-term development with the subject religion and science in high school religion as an example of how this can be fulfilled. Three different theories will be applied in this essay in order to form a comprehensive discussion. The three different theories presented in the theoretical framework are, John Dewey ‘s pragmatism, Hannah Arendt’s Natality and Paulo Freire’s Marxist theory. The subject religion and science was only recently added to the most updated curriculum, which has led to teachers taking it more seriously. Prior to that it was only a topic, which could or could not have been excluded. Now that it is included in the curriculum, new teaching approaches and learning strategies are necessary because of its density. The relationship between religion and science has several different perspectives and attitudes meaning that student’s can freely adapt their own because basically, no opinion or answer is wrong. Student’s can analyze, think critically and then develop his or her own understandings of the topic. The teacher must remain unbiased when teaching this topic so student’s can eventually develop his or her own creative views and opinions on the subject being studied. The schools curriculum emphasizes the fact that student’s are to develop his or her own creative opinions in life that will eventually contribute to society. The curriculum also stresses the importance of developing critical thinking and the ability to reflect. Critical thinking is a useful skill for all subject and matter and life however, it is not something that can develop on its own. Through reflection, and sufficient amount of guidance, the student’s ability to think critically will develop and progress into life long knowledge. Moreover, new knowledge that is reflected upon and critically analyzed will be memorized competently.

Abstract:

This thesis examines Hannah Arendt’s phenomenological theory of action (vita activa) to assess its capacity to accommodate environmental politics within its conception of the public sphere. Critics have argued that vita activa’s triadic structure excludes social questions—in which Arendt includes environmental concerns—from political action. In fact, her writings explicitly seek to shield politics from social incursions—a phenomenon she terms “the rise of the social.” However, this criticism overlooks the distinction Arendt draws between politics and governance, politics being a manifestation of freedom and governance the management of necessity. By arguing for vita activa’s ability to accommodate contemporary environmental concerns, this reading seeks to promote Arendt’s conception of freedom within the emerging green political tradition, for her understanding of politics recognizes its existential function in creating identities for both communities and individuals. To pose an environmental challenge to Arendt’s thought, this thesis employs some of the key themes and conceptions from four prominent green theorists: John Dryzek, Robyn Eckersley, Andrew Dobson, and John Meyer. In relation to these theorists, it will be argued that vita activa’s form of politics carries the possibility of allowing environmentalism to appear within the public sphere’s political contents without contradicting its triadic boundaries. To develop an environmentally sustainable society, political communities must create new narratives for bridging the divide between their built and natural environments, a process that requires the existential power of Arendtian politics.

Abstract:

In the broadest sense, the three essays that form this dissertation address certain normative features in John Locke’s philosophy. “On Revolution: Arendt, Locke, and Republican Revisionism” deals with Hannah Arendt’s early republican revisionism that removes Locke’s influence from the American revolutionary period. Her (mistaken) belief is that Locke’s political philosophy encourages social disengagement and political apathy. In “One Body of People: Locke on Amerindians, Protestant Evangelism, and the Colonization of North America” I take seriously Locke’s religious devotion and reassess his colonial philosophy through an “evangelical” lens. It turns out his colonial thought was not motivated by “punishment” but by a perceived collective good. In “Friends in the State of Nature: John Locke and the Formation of Security Communities,” I explore the routinely overlooked fact that Locke characterizes humans as highly sociable and prone to friendship. To be sure, friendship and trust not only exist in the state of nature, they are what precipitate the contractual movement into civil society. This is particularly relevant given the fact that the realist tradition within International Relations almost reflexively characterizes the relationship between states as one of ruthless self interest. The way Locke speaks about the formation of political communities is highly reminiscent of “security communities,” a term popularized by Karl Deustch in the late 1950s, which describes groups of people who have integrated to such an extent that conflict can be managed in nonviolent ways. Locke characterizes the international community both in terms of moral communities (where different regions of the world share different values), and also in terms of economic communities of varying degrees of interdependence.
