Abstract:

Abstract:
The pressing need for increased sustainability in the energy system combined with underinvestment in new energy technology demonstrates the need for government initiatives to drive innovation in the energy sector. In this thesis, we have investigated how design characteristics of a government agency intended to support market focused energy technology innovation affect the projects in its portfolio, and consequently suggested considerations that should be made in the design of such an agency on the basis of our findings. Our focus is on the level of individual projects being supported by such programs. An embedded single-case research design was chosen, where the units of analysis were projects supported by the U.S. agency ARPA E. The primary source of data was semi-structured, open-ended interviews with representatives from 13 projects in California. Following our research, the following findings emerge: The innovation process of projects within early-stage, transformative high-risk energy technology is affected by design characteristics related to the program design, project selection process and the support provided by an active management model in the agency. The organizational structure of the agency and the quality of its managing officials are important moderators of these factors. As guidance to policy makers, we establish the order of importance of design considerations to be made in the creation of such an agency. This thesis contributes to theory by presenting an integrative framework of interlinked factors describing these effects, as well as a cohesive portfolio of rationales for government intervention in energy sector innovation.

The theme of this masters dissertation is the joint study of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes´s work, artists who were a couple, active in the context of the modern École de Paris, having lived exiled in Brazil during the 1940s, due to the Second World War. Vieira da Silva´s work focuses on the borders of pictorial dialogue between time and space or, more specifically, on the dialectic tension between the construction and the deconstruction of perspective. In turn, Arpad Szenes has a recognized series of works where he portrays the wife on everyday moments, including occasions that she dedicates herself to creative activities. The poetics‟ duet undertaken by the couple, beyond promoting a “metalinguistic” questioning of painting between traditional and modern, allows us to weave new meanings for the interface art/life. By portraying Vieira da Silva in her atelier moments, Arpad Szenes translates the artist´s plastic thinking under his gaze, on the creation of a “myth” that retells his story with his wife, enabling the construction of a shared painting. Such sharing originates on the dialogue between the couple´s works, but it is reinforced on the poets´ productions, critics and writers, what constitutes a circle of artistic-cultural acquaintanceship around the two artists, in the shapes of modernism´s sociability. In this rich exchange of experiences and productions, the art reveals its best interface, by the appreciation of everyday instant. A scenario is set up where space´s materiality joins memory‟s subjective temporality, from where Vieira da Silva and Szenes´ work emerges as an exemplar case.

In response to pathogen infections, plants modulate a series of signaling pathways that are mediated by hormones, such as SA, MeJA and auxin. These pathways may result in gene expression alteration that is important for mitigating the effects of infection. This transcriptional reprogramming is regulated by transcription factors. bZIP’s transcriptional factors are important regulators in plants. Some of their members are involved in defense responses against pathogens. This study describes the functional characterization for GMbZIP105 transcriptional factor and GmARP15g protein during response against fungal infection. For that, it was used the fungus that causes ASR – Asian soybean rust. In addition, in silico analysis using clustering methodologies were applied to identify potential DRM1 / ARP family groups. The expression profiles of these groups were evaluated in response to treatment with hormones auxin and MeJA and during pathogen infection in soybean. The proteins GmbZIP105 and GmARP15g interact in two-hybrid yeast assays; in addition, they present the same transcriptional profile in response to treatment with hormones MeJA and auxin and are responsive to pathogen. GmbZIP105 induces the expression of genes related to photosynthesis, while GmARP15g interacts with one of the PSII proteins. These results suggest a functional relationship between both proteins in which GmARP15g probably modulates the localization or activity of the transcription factor GmbZIP105.

Abstract:
Sea breeze events (SB) are common in Metropolitan area at São Paulo (MASP). Particularly, in the summer, SB triggers over MASP deep convection, heavy rainfall, wind gusts, hail and lightning. OLIVEIRA and SILVA DIAS (1982) method was used to identify the SB events. SB events between 2005 and 2008 were analysed by means of surface and upper air measurements, weather radar, satellite and numerical modelling. In general, the SB front penetrates in MASP between midafternoon and evening increasing dew point. Moreover, the warmer urban environment tends to intensify storms that produce flooding, falling trees, among other large socioeconomic impacts. The annual rainfall partition due to SB was estimated using the São Paulo weather radar. The results indicate a core of maximum rainfall accumulation of 600 mm over MASP, much larger than that in the vicinity. The modelling with ARPS allowed simulate conditions spatial average in low, medium and upper levels of several variables of the analysed events. Moreover, the ARPS system was used to simulate SB with control and specific runs. Results suggest significant impact of surface cover on rainfall distribution. MXPOL weather radar measurements of SB were important in detecting and nowcasting SB inflow at very high spatial and temporal resolution.

Abstract:
Fresh water withdrawal for thermoelectric power generation in the U.S. is approximately 139 billion gallons per day (BGD), or 41% of total fresh water draw, making it the largest single use of fresh water in the U.S. Of the fresh water withdrawn for the power generation sector, 4.3 BGD is dissipated to the atmosphere by cooling towers and spray ponds. Dry-cooled power plants are attractive and sometimes necessary because they avoid significant withdrawal and consumption of freshwater resources that could otherwise be used for other purposes. This could become even more important when considering the potential effects of climate change (1). Additional benefits of dry-cooling include power plant site flexibility, reduced risk of water scarcity, and faster permitting (reducing project development time and cost). However, dry-cooling systems are known to be more costly and larger than their wet-cooling counterparts. Additionally, without the benefit of additional latent heat transfer through evaporation, the Rankine cycle condensing (cold) temperature for dry-cooling is typically higher than that for wet-cooling, affecting the efficiency of power production and the resultant levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). The Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) has developed a technoeconomic analysis (TEA) model for the development of indirect dry-cooling systems employing steam condensation within a natural gas combined cycle power plant. The TEA model has been used to inform the Advanced Research in Dry-Cooling (ARID) Program on the performance metrics needed to achieve an economical dry-cooling technology. In order to assess the relationship between air-cooled heat exchanger (ACHX) performance, including air side heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop, and power plant economics, ARPA-E has employed a modified version of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) model of a 550 MW natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) plant employing an evaporative cooling system. The evaporative cooling system, including associated balance of system costs, was replaced with a thermodynamic model for an ACHX with the desired improved heat transfer performance and supplemental cooling and storage systems. Monte Carlo simulation determined an optimal ACHX geometry and associated ACHX cost. Allowing for an increase in LCOE of 5%, the maximum allowable additional cost of the supplemental cooling system was determined as a function of the degree of cooling of the working fluid required. This paper describes the methodologies employed in the TEA, details the results, and includes related models as supplemental material, while providing insight on how the open source tool might be used for thermal management innovation.

Abstract:
Hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) systems are continually being investigated, in particular the use of such systems in concentrating collectors as part of the ARPA-E FOCUS program. While many combined thermal and electrical models exist, most are limited to 0-D energy balance approaches or 1-D approaches where temperature variations through insulation, glazing and substrates are considered. Here, we develop a 2-D model for a concentrating PV/T system where the model accounts for temperature variations along the length of the collector. The proposed configuration consists of a GaAs cell laminated to an aluminum extrusion. The working fluid, a transparent high temperature heat transfer fluid with suspended nanoparticles, flows through the extrusion where it actively cools the PV cell before passing in front of the cell acting as an optical filter. The model includes PV cell efficiency, temperature, and bandgap dependence, a detail often neglected in prior works. This paper focuses on PV efficiency along the length of the system and outlet fluid temperature for both counter and parallel flow arrangements. Of particular interest here is the wavelength used in the design of the fluid filter and how changing the design impacts the exergetic efficiency and percent of exergy created as heat.

Abstract:
Few technologies can produce meaningful power from low temperature waste heat sources below 250°C, particularly on a per-mass basis. Since the 1970’s energy crisis, NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) and associated thermal engines have been considered a viable heat-to-power transducer but were not adopted due to previously poor material quality, low supply, design complexity, and cost. Decades of subsequent material development, research, and commercialization have resulted in the availability of consistently high-quality, well-characterized, low cost alloys and a renewed interest in SMA as a waste heat energy recovery technology. The Lightweight Thermal Energy Recovery System (LighTERS) is an ongoing ARPA-E funded collaboration between General Motors Company, HRL Laboratories, Dynalloy, Inc., and the University of Michigan. In this paper we will present initial results from investigations of a closed loop SMA thermal engine (a refinement of the Dr. Johnson design) using a helical coil element and forced-air heat exchange. This engine generates mechanical power by continuously pulling itself through separate hot and cold air streams using the shape memory phase transformation to alternately expand and contract at frequencies between 0.25 and 2 Hz. This work cycle occurs continuously along the length of the coil loop and produces steady state power against an external moment. We present engine features and the thermal envelope that resulted in devices achieving between 0.1 and 0.5 W/g of shape memory alloy material using only forced air heat exchangers and room temperature cooling.

Abstract:
Hilly terrain poses challenges to truck platoons using fixed set speed cruise control. Driving the front truck efficiently on hilly terrain improves both trucks fuel economies and improves gap maintenance between the trucks. An experimentally-validated simulation model was used to show fuel savings for the platoon of 12.3% when the front truck uses long horizon predictive cruise control (LH-PCC), 8.7% when the front truck uses flexible set speed cruise control, and only 1.2% when the front truck uses fixed set speed cruise control. Purdue, Peloton, and Cummins have jointly configured two Peterbilt 579 trucks for relevant combinations of: (1) coordinated shifting, (2) constant or variable platoon gap controls, (3) flexible or constant speed setpoint cruise control of the front trucks, and (4) long-horizon predictive cruise control (LHPCC) of the front truck. Confirmation of this functionality during platooning was demonstrated at the Continental Test track in Uvalde, Texas. In Indiana, on-road experiments were limited to single truck operation with long-horizon predictive cruise control, flexible set speed cruise control, and constant setpoint cruise control. Data from all of the above was used to improve the fidelity of simulations used to arrive at the fuel savings and gap control findings for hilly terrain per what is summarized in the findings section. Additionally, in early summer 2020, Purdue submitted to, and received improvement from, INDOT for a safe truck platoon testing protocol (located in this report’s appendix), which could not be implemented in Indiana before the end of the project because of COVID-19. Presentations of the subject matter at COMVEC, MAASTO, Purdue Road School, and the Work Truck Show are listed in the appendix.
