Sharp, Barry Shelton. "Sizhu for flute, clarinet in B-flat, violin, cello, piano, and percussion." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1751.

Full text
Abstract:
Sizhu was written for the standard Pierrot ensemble though with percussion replacing the singer. This particular ensemble is capable of producing a multitude of colors while maintaining the balance inherent to a chamber group. The Chinese name, si’zhu, is a literal and figurative metaphor for these elements of the ensemble. Literally translated “silk” (sī) and “bamboo” (zhú), the word is a generalization for Chinese classical music developed in the Jiangsu province (Jiāngnán sīzhú) that utilizes strings, or “silk” instruments, and flutes, or “bamboo,” instruments in combination. A typical work involves two or more players of either ilk. In reference to the work presented here, Sizhu is a metaphor for the western instruments (flute and clarinet as “bamboo,” and violin and cello as “silk”) that are employed within the piece. It also refers to my use of a Chinese melody in the compositional process. The song, Er Quan Ying Yue (The Moon Reflected In Second Spring), was composed and performed regularly on the streets by the blind erhu player A Bing. The song has been fragmented, stretched, and varied to the point of near inscrutability, though it becomes more comprehensible following the mid-point. It inspires both structural and local events. The work also employs aspects of the spectral style. The first section is a slow distortion and transformation of the A harmonic spectrum; specific partials are emphasized as the spectrum expands and contracts. Additionally, fragments of the Chinese melody appear within the confines of each specific harmonic structure. The second part completely diverges utilizing assimilated pentatonic scale permutations. Finally, the third section synthesizes these two elements of musical material within the piece as the instruments morendo into silence.

Full text
Abstract:
Widely regarded as one of the most significant composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Carl Nielsen and his music have come to define the early twentieth-century musical traditions of Denmark. His original songs for voice and piano are often revered as popular folk tunes and contributed to his status as a national icon. My dissertation explores Nielsen's vocal repertoire through a multipart project that includes transcribing and editing eleven of Nielsen's early songs from Op. 4 (1891) and Op. 10 (1894), originally for voice and piano, for flute and piano. I discuss the reception history and context of Nielsen's Songs, the important role of transcription in flute literature, and provide full score transcription of the original works for flute and piano. Many vocal works have been transcribed for flute from the original vocal score, providing variety in programming and attracting diverse audiences to performances. Transcription offers scholars a new view into a work, by determining what elements of the piece are integral to maintain the composer's intentions.

Research on the musical language as well as the technical realisation of the tape part to a kindred spirit, for ensemble and tape, was realised at the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University from September, 1984 to September, 1986.
The following excerpt from the programme note in the score summarizes the 'spirit' of the composition.
"The computer generated sounds on tape form a large body in which instrumental sounds float and from which they appear, like weeds oscillating on a sometimes calm and often turbulent sea of sound.
'You're afraid, in the mirror, of the sea, in front of, you're afraid ... ' and 'searching, for a common pulse, to sustain, to carry on, searching ... ' are circular phrases in the text which reflect elements of both doubt and courage. Mourning that which can never return. Celebrating that which will always be with us."

Full text
Abstract:
My lecture serves as a critical examination of the Six Sonatas Op. 3, KV. 10-15 by W.A. Mozart. I will engage the variances between the first edition of Op. 3 and those by Joseph Bopp and Louis Moyse edited specifically for the flute in hopes of providing another perspective for students, performers, and pedagogues alike. This study will (1) provide background information regarding the creation of KV. 10-15, (2) include a brief analysis of each sonata, (3) compare adaptions between the first edition, according to NMA, and two modern flute transcriptions, and (4) produce two new transcriptions. My new transcriptions of Sonatas KV. 10 and 13 represent a closer interpretation to the first edition and alerts students and teachers to the differences between the editions by Joseph Bopp and Louis Moyse to that of the first and NMA editions. The goal is to stimulate performers to reappraise their approach to this particular repertoire and to encourage more authentic performances of these engaging sonatas.

Folie à deux is a musical composition for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and vibraphone with electroacoustic music and live audio processing. It explores the idea of musical influence through the metaphor of shared delusion. This dissertation is made up of four main sections. The first will look at the background to the piece, the historical and personal influences that led to its composition. The second section will discuss those aspects of the piece that are somewhat unique as well as an examination of how it does not correspond to standard practices. Next, a detailed examination of the steps taken to bring the piece to fruition will be explored. Finally, some concluding remarks will be made about the piece and the future creative directions that may be followed in its wake.

Chen, Der-Shiuan. "Interpretation and Execution of Chords on the Double Bass from Select Movements of the Bach Cello Suites." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1248443/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Bach Cello Suites have become widely transcribed and studied on the double bass. They have also become essential teaching material as most US orchestra auditions demand solo Bach for bass auditions. Transcribing the chords in Bach Cello Suites presents many difficulties on the bass because of the different tuning of our instrument (cello in 5ths; double bass in 4ths). There is no unified solution to all the problems presented in chord playing at this time. The purpose of this project, therefore is to give bass players solutions to the problems by looking at historical interpretation of chords, technical execution of the chords on cello and bass, tonal and resonance considerations and fingering solutions. The chords chosen represent the most common and most difficult to transcribe to the double bass from the Cello Suites.

Lyszczarz, Joseph E. "Among the Voices Voiceless: Setting the Words of Samuel Beckett." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2017. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1011787/.

Full text
Abstract:
Among the Voices Voiceless is a composition for flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), viola, cello, percussion, piano, and electronics, based on the poem "What would I do without this world faceless incurious" by Samuel Beckett. The piece is a setting for disembodied voice: the vocal part exists solely in the electronics. Having no physical body, the voice is obscured as the point of empathy for the audience. In addition, instrumental solos compete for focus during the work's twenty minute duration. In passages including a soloist, the soloist functions simultaneously as antagonist and avatar to the disembodied voice. Spoken word recordings and electronic manipulation of instrumental material provides further layers of ambiguity. The companion critical essay "Among the Voices Voiceless": Setting the Words of Samuel Beckett proposes the distillation of Beckett's style into the elements of prosaicness, repetition, fragmentation, ambiguity, and symmetry. Discussions of Beckett's works such as Waiting for Godot and Molloy demonstrate these elements in his practice. This framework informs the examination of two other musical settings of Beckett's poetry: Neither by Morton Feldman and Odyssey by Roger Reynolds. Finally, these elements are used to analyze and elucidate the compositional decisions made in Among the Voices Voiceless.

Abstract:
"Rasgueado” is an expansion of a chorale from an earlier work I composed for brass quintet. It is based on a seven measure progression that appears in many several different variations throughout the work. Traditionally, this form is known as a passacaglia, which has origins in Spain and Italy. In Spain, the pasacalle, is a rasgueado, or strummed interlude between dances or the verses of a song. I choose to name this piece “Rasgueado” since parts of the piece are loosely based on the idea of the passacaglia and since the piece opens and closes with the strumming of the cello.

"Phantom Sun: Septet for Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Violin, Cello, and Percussion." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.43998.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Phantom Sun is a ten-minute piece in three sections, and is composed for flute, clarinet in b-flat, violin, cello, and percussion. The three-part structure for this work is a representation of the atmospheric phenomenon after which the composition is named. A phantom sun, also called a parhelion or sundog, is a weather-related phenomenon caused by the horizontal refraction of sunlight in the upper atmosphere. This refraction creates the illusion of three suns above the horizon, and is often accompanied by a bright halo called the circumzenithal arc. The halo is caused by light bending at 22° as it passes through hexagonal ice crystals. Consequently, the numbers six and 22 are important figures, and have been encoded into this piece in various ways. The first section, marked “With concentrated intensity,” is characterized by the juxtaposition of tonal ambiguity and tonal affirmation, as well as the use of polymetric counterpoint (often 7/8 against 4/4 or 7/8 against 3/4). The middle section, marked “Crystalline,” provides contrast in its use of unmetered sections and independent tempos. The refraction of light is represented in this movement by a 22-note row based on a hexachord (B-flat, F, C, G, A, E) introduced in measure 164 of the first section. The third section, marked “With frenetic energy,” begins without pause on an arresting entrance of the drums playing an additive rhythmic pattern. This pattern (5+7+9+1) amounts to 22 eighth-note pulses and informs much of the motivic and structural considerations for the remainder of the piece.

Abstract:
Breath is based on a story written by R. Lawrence Reed II, M.D., when he chaired the Trauma Surgery Department at the University of Texas Medical School in 1989. Breath is a setting of two hospital scenes. "Emergency Room" is the tragic aftermath of a young man's alcohol related motorcycle accident when his parents (soprano and baritone) are given hopeless news by the Doctor (tenor or contralto). In "Intensive Care Unit," the parents are next confronted with the unthinkable procedure of having their son's ventilator disconnected. Musically, Breath is generally organized with three pitch series which are associated with paired voices and instruments.

This dissertation is meant to discuss the similarities and differences between classical music and jazz and their influences on each other. Classical and popular music in the 20th century are both flourishing. A variety of novel composing techniques and creative ideas are emerging in the field of classical music. The emergence of jazz has a huge impact and promotion on popular music culture. Classical music and jazz have had a small scale of fusion since the Symphonic Jazz era, and the interaction between these two music styles had culminated in the Third Stream era, mixing into a brand new genre. By observing the classical composers’ utilization of jazz elements in their works, analyzing the harmony, rhythm and preforming techniques of the specific music, the author comprehend the possibilities of integrating classical music and jazz elements (by composers). Selective works include La Creation du Monde by Darius Milhaud, Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, Transformation by Gunther Schuller and Sketch by John Lewis——all of these pieces contain both classical and jazz elements. In addition to previous works, this paper presents the practical achievement by demonstrating and explaining the Suite for Flute, Cello and Piano composed by the author.

Abstract:
The works included in this portfolio represent my continual effort to develop a solution for my search for an expression of my Chinese influences. I focus mainly on three aspects: the unique timbre of Chinese instruments, the intimacy of a small traditional Chinese music ensemble, and the spontaneity of individual performers. I attempt to include these three elements into my work while retaining an expressive quality that I find to be common in Chinese literature. The three works presented in this portfolio are my continual attempts to develop these ideas into a way of expression.
The first work in the portfolio, "Rummage through the Crimson", explores the unique timbre of huqin. The instrumentation (three erhus and one zhonghu) allows me to search for difference within a homogenous texture and thus to discover the timbral nuance available. I also experiment with a notation that at the same time allows freedom and requires cooperation among performers to create a cohesive and natural ensembleship.
The second work, "Slashes of Frost and Wind", extends the experimentation of notation to a greater scale. While using an ensemble of Chinese instruments, I try to utilize the freedom allowed by the notation to unleash the innate creativity of the performers and to evoke the improvisatory nature of their traditional playing. On the other hand, I explore the use of extended techniques while respecting the instrument's natural capabilities.
In "Flower Burial under a Pallid Moon", I attempt to transfer the findings from "Slashes of Frost and Wind" to a purely Western context, in the hopes of creating a piece of music that express Chinese elements while using Western instruments, so as to expand the expressive possibilities of such an ensemble. Many technical elements have been brought over, namely sensitivity to timbral nuance, improvisatory nature of the notation, and close cooperation while in a state of performance freedom. More suggestive descriptions are added to guide the performers in improvisatory passages. Most importantly, I retain a Chinese imagery that runs through the veins of all these three works. In essence, the technical attempts here merely try to approach a succinct expression of my Chinese influence.

Scott, Douglas Walter. "Hatten’s theory of musical gesture : an applied logico-deductive analysis of Mozart’s Flute quartet in D, K.285." Diss., 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/6733.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the possibility of applying Hatten’s theory of musical gesture to a formal system of musical analysis. Using historical antecedents and established musicological practice as a guide, a range of musical parameters in a motive length span of music are incorporated into a single gesture. This gesture forms the basic semantic unit upon which an analytical tableau structure is built, and a syntax is developed to allow derivations of new gestures; a large scale structure displaying fractal-like self-similarity is then proposed. The completed system is applied to the analysis of the ‘Adagio’ of Mozart’s Flute Quartet K.285 to test whether it can consistently be implemented and whether it produces falsifiable results while maintaining predictive power. It is found that these requirements are indeed met and that a set of inference rules can be derived suggesting that the proposed system has ample scope for further development.

Copeland, Warren. "Time for bee: a recital of compositions." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/5123.

Full text
Abstract:
Time for Bee consists of a series of ten original musical/theatrical compositions created between September 1992 and January 1994, first performed on the evening of January 28, 1994 in the Recital Hall of the University of British Columbia. While each of the works can be performed individually, it was the composer’s intent to create a recital which is logical in its progression. This should suggest that in some way the pieces belong together as a larger whole. The concept of “waiting” circulates throughout all the works, in the sense that the actual material is either minimalist (and so one is forced to “wait” for changes), or the philosophy behind a given piece is similarly based, but may not be evident in the sounding music. The studies in the music machine, for example, try to incorporate necessary stage changes between pieces (and the waiting the audience goes through) into musical events about such waiting. A secondary interest concerns the concept of contradiction. The majority of the works are, for example, based upon high-sounding textures (flute, violin, clarinet, high piano and mallets, etc). The studies in the music machine attempt to introduce low-sounding textures as a contrast, however, and throughout the recital a timpani and a bass drum sit off to the side of the stage, unplayed. These ideas, and others, are meant to serve as a contradiction to the unified high-sounding textures of the majority of the recital. Individual pieces are similarly based upon concepts of contradiction and waiting. Memory, as a concept, plays a prominent role in several pieces as well.
