Full textIn November 2003, 15 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) were deployed during a period of 12 days in the southwestern Okinawa Trough. More than 3300 earthquakes were localized. The seismicity is essentially restricted to the central part of the southwestern Okinawa Trough and terminates abruptly against the N-E trending prolongation of the Lishan fault. Most of the microearthquakes are aligned along the E-W trending normal faults. The existence of a lower crustal / upper mantle magma chamber is suggested by the presence of low frequency earthquakes in the 3 - 10 Hz bandwidth. Based on numerous earthquakes recorded by land stations and the microseismicity acquired during this cruise, two tomographic inversions were performed (1) A low Vp, Vs but high Vp/Vs sausage-like body, about 30 km in diameter, on top of the western Ryukyu slab extremity, at depths ranging between 20 and 125 km. We suggest partial melting and/or a H20-rich component formed by dehydration processes above the Ryukyu slab and the slab edge might explain the presence of this anomalies. A low Vp, Vs but high Vp/Vs channel rises obliquely from the sausage-like body in direction of the andesitic Kueishantao Island showing the veins and/or narrow conduits that magmas propagate through. (2) A mantle inflow characterized by low Vp, Vs and high Vp/Vs passing through the slab tear was imaged. This melt and/or fluid component is rising obliquely from the slab tear in direction of the CBVT, of the northern slope of the southern Okinawa Trough and north of Iriomote Island. In addition, the asthenospheric intake is also imaged by an inclined chip-like high Vp/Vs and low Vp, Vs body dipping northerly

Full textThe study of the lavas located at the mineralized area of Fatu Kapa, away of the Futuna island, brings constraints on the processes of metal extraction and concentration, inparticular precious metals, from the magmatic processes in the source rocks towards thehydrothermal mineralizations on the seafloor. The results of the petrogenetic study show that the Fatu Kapa magmas evolve by two major steps. (1) From trachybasalts to trachyandesites, magmas evolve through fractional crystallisation and then by fractional crystallisationcoupled to assimilation. At this step, sulfide saturation is early and a sulfide phase enriched inchalcophile elements sink and accumulate at the bottom of the magmatic chamber. These phases are not easily mobilized by hydrothermal circulation. However (2), from trachyandesites to trachydacites, magmas evolve by mixing between trachyandesitic melts andmelts generated by partial melting of the hydrothermally altered wallrock. Despite low coppervalues, these melts generate sulfide drops enriched in copper, which have been identified. Amajor result is the observation of a direct link between the liquid sulfide drops and the volatilrich magmatic phase which generate the vesicles during the eruptive phases. These bubbles allow the rise and the concentration of the magmatic sulfide blebs at the top of the magmatic chamber. This process, which have been demonstrated in experimental petrology, has not yet - to our knowledge - been identified in oceanic melts

Full textLocated at the extreme tip of the western Mediterranean, the Betic-Rif orogenic system is built through a complex alpine orogenic history involving processes of subduction related to convergence between Africa and Eurasia since the Cretaceous. A remarkable discovery during the last four decades of geological investigations, has been the remains of a variscan event in the internal zones of the belt. These results underline the presence of two superimposed orogenic systems, the internal zones of the belt thus remain a privileged area to study the importance of the structural and the metamorphic heritage in the partial or total reactivation by the most recent events. This work is located in the Beni Bousera sector, where crustal and mantle rocks that form the innermost units of the chain are exposed. Based on structural and petrological analyses, U-Th-Pb dating on monazite and 40Ar-39Ar dating on micas and amphiboles. The history of the Betic-Rif belt can be summarized as it follows: 1) a HP-HT event affects the base of the internal domain at around 281 ± 3 Ma. These new petrological and geochronological data obtained in the internal Rif, are correlated with the Betics, the Kabyle, the Edough massif of Algeria, the Mauritanian, and the Appalachian belts, attesting a convergent domain during the late Carboniferous – early Permian. All of these orogenic segments are part of the North African Variscides built at the north-western margin of Gondwana in response to convergence between the later and Laurentia. 2) at around 29-26 Ma, a Barrovian to Abukuma metamorphic event affects the Sebtides (the innermost units of the chain) and interpreted as the evolution of the upper plate of a subduction zone. This alpine event is typically characterized by a prograde metamorphic path marked by heating affecting the base of the Sebtides between 26 to 22 Ma, such conditions reflect thinning and heating of the crust related to the asthenosphere upwelling due to slab roll-back. This event marks the beginning of a major extensive event. 3) In the Miocene around 22-20 Ma, the internal zones are affected by an E-W extension contemporary to the opening of the Alboran Basin in a back-arc context, and the intrusion of granitic dykes into the peridotites and crustal metamorphic units, the exhumation of the Sebtides was complete at this time. 4) From early to middle Miocène, the Betic-Rif belt acquired its arcuate geometry (the Gibraltar Arc) during the collision between the Internal and the external zones, attested by de NE-SW to E-W shortening phases across the arc. 5) more lately prior to Pliocene, the Gibraltar arc was subjected to contractional possess related to a N-S shortening phase, which drastically altered its geometry
