Abstract:

Abstract:
In his first work, the poetics Meditationes philosophicae de nonnullis ad poema pertinentibus. Baumgarten frequently cites Horace’s Ars Poetica. Horace was highly esteemed by Baumgarten and his contemporaries, especially in the fields of poetics and art theory. Baumgarten uses Ars Poetica throughout Meditationes. but it is especially in the paragraphs introducing some of the key concepts of his philosophy that there is a significant amount of excerpts from Horace’s poetics. In this article, I examine if and how contemporary scholarly interpretations may have influenced these uses of Horace’s text and maybe even Baumgarten’s theory. Following a brief account of relevant commentaries as well as Horace’s position in contemporary art theory, I explore the implied interpretations of Ars Poetica in Baumgarten’s excerpts, focusing on his three key terms, phantasia. heterocosmica and methodum lucidam. Compared to the conception of Horace as expressed in the commentaries, this study suggests a complex interaction between those and Baumgarten’s art theory.

Abstract:
The author introduces ars spirituality as a reflexive practice in poetic inquiry. She examines Faulkner’s ars poetica and ars criteria and contends their focus on the craft, aesthetics, and evaluation of research poetry do not account for the ways in which spirituality influences Black women’s research poetry and poetic inquiry. The author argues Black women’s poetry—whether crafted from/for personal experiences, historical research, or transcripts—is born of the spirit and conceptualizes ars spirituality using the works of Audre Lorde and Cynthia Dillard. Three guiding principles of ars spirituality are discussed and an ars spirituality example is provided.

Full text
Abstract:
In his Letter to Brixius (1520) Thomas More proposes a poetics that incorporates Horatian prescriptions of structure, style, and the role of the poet. In attacking the untruths in the poem Chordigerae navis conflagratio (1513) by the French humanist Germanus Brixius or Germain de Brie, More alludes frequently to loci classici in Horace’s Ars poetica and, at the same time, presents three poetic principles: (1) the use of history in imaginative literature; (2) the significance of decorum and verisimilitude in the creation of fictional representation; (3) the nature of the poet who, similar to the Roman orator, contributes to society through moral example and teaching. In drawing upon precepts set forth by Horace and Roman rhetoricians and interpreted by Renaissance critics, More defines the means of teaching the truth in humanist fiction.

Abstract:
Hitherto the group of seventh-century texts and fragments known as Hisperica famina has defied interpretation. Following suggestions made by a.o. Andy Orchard, I propose to read the A-text as an ambitious piece of literature, in which linguistic competition, hilarious though it may be, is seen as a tool to cope with the anxieties of living in an inhospitable world. After offering a new perspective on the text’s dialogic structure, suggesting that the narrator is an Englishman recalling his student years in Ireland, I read the descriptions of sea and fire as metapoetical symbols and the final section on a cattle raid as an allegory. Subsequently, I pay attention to irony and self-mockery, to conclude that the text is not only about words and grammar but has literary, social, and existential value as well.
